Feliz Día Mundial de la Fotografía Ha sido un gran reto el camino de ser promotor del uso de la fotografía en Galápagos y en tiempos de pandemia lo es mucho más. Sin embargo, en realidad ha sido un gran desafío para mí en situaciones normales crear espacios comunitarios para compartir conocimiento y experiencias pro conservación de la naturaleza a través de la fotografía. No es algo común en Galápagos y creo que antes no se le ha dado este uso a la fotografía en el archipiélago, al menos de la forma en la que me he visto envuelto en el camino. La implementación de nuevas ideas a veces conlleva resistencia pero se han logrado generar nuevas visones en el uso de este instrumento. No estaba en mis planes dedicarme a la enseñanza, no pretendo ser maestro; sin embargo mis estudiantes me llaman “profesor”. La fotografía como herramienta me ha permitido compartir oportunidades a cientos de jóvenes, logrando en la mayoría de los casos por primera vez visitar lugares que son comunes para los turistas pero difíciles para la comunidad, ver por primera vez algunas especies, colaborar con guardaparques, científicos, ver sus fotografías impresas y expuestas en un museo o al otro lado del mundo les producen recuerdos inolvidables. Momentos que me llenan de orgullo y reconfortan el alma; son muestra que vamos por buen camino y son experiencias inspiradoras. Y aunque suene algo egocentrista (no creo que sea así) todos dejamos huellas en los demás, y todos tenemos gente a quienes inspiramos con nuestros actos. Como líderes, educadores o adultos, tenemos una gran responsabilidad de crear un mejor entorno, una mejor comunidad; la juventud está mirando nuestros pasos y de alguna manera debemos hacerlo de la mejor manera posible para motivar cambios positivos. Creo que debemos unirnos como comunidad y trabajar fuerte desde nuestras zonas de influencia para generar espacios y oportunidades que superen las barreras del contexto actual de manera exitosa para beneficio común. What do you want? I mean, what do you REALLY want for your life, your career, your relationships, and your wellbeing? So many of us are unclear on the specifics of what we REALLY want. Sure we all want more time, more money, better relationships and to be healthier. But that answer is TOO VAGUE. If you don’t have a highly specific goal, it’s like practicing archery without aiming. How likely are you to hit a bullseye on a target if you’re aimlessly shooting anywhere in an open field? Then there’s the “I don’t deserve that” obstacle. Maybe want you really want is a house with a big back yard, but then decide no house will ever be in your price range. Then the procrastination, “it’s just so much work,” or “I don’t have time for that” excuses come up. You want to lose weight, but don’t commit to exercise. How do you overcome this to get what you really want? 1) The first step is always acknowledgement. Fess up! Own what’s holding you back. Call yourself on it. My fucking heart is breaking. I am a teacher. I see and hear these kids struggling. I am not their mother but I feel like I am. To over 70 kids daily. I wipe tears. I wipe butts. I laugh with them. I cry with them. I’m here for the best and the worst. Vomit. Blood. Success. Failure. Learning to spell. Learning to walk and talk. It breaks my fucking heart to see these kids ignored by parents. Or parents that deny their kids personalities. I had to step into the hallway and cry today because I found a journal from one of the school aged girls who wrote that she has feelings for other girls. Her mom is very against it and she’s being bullied at school over it. She wrote she wants to kill herself to feel normal. An 11 year old... I’m the only person she has to talk to. Y’all. Don’t have kids if you can’t accept them for who they are. In the recent years I’ve seen an uptick in hate against teachers and the public school system. Y’all it’s definitely not perfect but I can tell you. These teachers are keeping your kids safe. These teachers spend their money on your kids daily. These teachers put themselves out there to better the future and help young people grow into adults. Teachers are important.
