My 2nd grader likes to see his name in lights-- Braille lights! I circled holes with whiteout and white paint to make visible braille cells against the black plastic. He's grown up so much. He did his work this week. Friday we got away from the paper and went walking to get some rules for handling an ID cane. It means that he does not require a cane for the blind for constant orientation and mobility. He needs it to identify as a child with visual impairments. He knows the school. For field trips away from school I want him to take it for security in unfamiliar places and so others will know he needs consideration for his low vision. He gets so excited when introduced to new things. "Wow! I can tell when the sidewalk changes. This was taken last February. I can't wait to see my elementary boy in second grade! The kids return next week. He came to school every day and was so proud of his braille that he was teaching his classmates. The label on the old braille writer warns of not pressing Mrs. Perkins' ( the braille writer's name) without paper in it because it gives her indigestion. The main building teachers' lounge decked out for Teacher Appreciation Week by the Zachary PTO. On Monday there was flavored coffees at a coffee bar, muffins, fruit, and yogurt for breakfast. There are different treats every morning. Wherever I go in Zachary, I see hardworking teachers with very creative methods. That's why the test scores are always good and the children with special needs like mine are well taken care of. Here's my April door decoration. It's a sunny outdoor scene with 3-D clouds and daisies. One cloud has the title in print and ink-braille. It reads, "Spring Things." Each cloud and flower has a word in print and ink-braille that is associated with spring, like birds, flowers, Father's Day, Mother's Day, pollen, showers, and green. The contractions are circled. My high schooler is a mentor student to my first grader and helped make this Barbara and Tim Allen book (directions found on the Pathways to Literacy website) for him. When I told him we were going to read it he said, "Well, I don't read too good." I asked him to tell me what he thought was going on on each page. The video shows his version. Then we read the actual story and I picked out signs and words that he knew and he read them all-- doing better than he thought.
