This was taken last February. I can't wait to see my elementary boy in second grade! The kids return next week. He came to school every day and was so proud of his braille that he was teaching his classmates. The label on the old braille writer warns of not pressing Mrs. Perkins' ( the braille writer's name) without paper in it because it gives her indigestion. My first grader gave me an addition to our tactile door at the high school. He made a gingerbread house in art and gave it to me as a gift. My high schooler is a mentor student to my first grader and helped make this Barbara and Tim Allen book (directions found on the Pathways to Literacy website) for him. When I told him we were going to read it he said, "Well, I don't read too good." I asked him to tell me what he thought was going on on each page. The video shows his version. Then we read the actual story and I picked out signs and words that he knew and he read them all-- doing better than he thought. I noticed a problem with distinguishing the words there, their, and they're-- the last not so much as the other two. But it provided an opportunity to review the term 'homophone.' If you can't do it in print then learning their braille counterparts can get confusing. So we backed up a minute, read a funny story using them, then played a game. For O&M and reading she read an article about the white cane and White Cane Day. The rest of her assignment involved writing 10 facts about the cane in braille. We made a poster with a 3-D paper cane and she cut and glued the facts to the red poster. Another Use for a Lite Brite Toy I had him make his name earlier but the dots were all over the place. So I highlighted holes to form rows of the braille cell. He was excited to spell his name with the pegs. Then we had to find a dark corner where he could see his name in lights! Last homework assignment of the year: It was a sheet about types of flowers in braille. She had to read about them and make a chart that showed 1) if the plant is easy to grow, 2) grown from a bulb or a seed, 3) needs sun or shade. She will attend 2 camps this summer so I gave her practice in the form of Gregory the Braille Frog Magazines for June and July.
