Super small itsy bitsy drabble of teacher Steve
Mr. Harrington was a pretty cool teacher. He got along with every clique of students on a personal level, he knew how to teach without droning on and on, and he was always super open with his students. So you can imagine the shock that ran rampant across his 0 hour class when the tired 11th graders walked in at 6am to see him writing out the day’s schedule with a gold ring brandishing the hand holding his expo marker.
Shushed muttering sounded immediately until Derek’s voice pierced through noise. “Uhh, Mr. H? What are you wearing,” the student asked pointing at his teacher’s left hand.
Said teacher turned around to face his class looking down at his chosen outfit for the day. What did he wear his pants inside out or something?
After a quick inspection of his attire he looked up at the students, “what do you mean? I’m wearing what I usually wear and am bullied for, a polo and jeans-?”
“And a wedding ring!” Paige shouted standing among her other classmates. “Did you get engaged Mr. Harrington?!” Janet spoke up causing a wave of questions to follow up from the rest of the class.
Steve brought his hand up to inspect, finally understanding his students’ shock, only to start chuckling, “Well I was engaged… like, 11 years ago.” He dragged that out hoping to get at least a little fun out of his mistake.
This statement was met with a resounding “WHAT??” from all his students as even more questions started to come in than before.
“Who are you married to?!”
A smirk, “My husband.”
“And who is your husband?”
“The man I married. Jeez kids keep up, what have I been teaching you?”
“Mr. Harringtonnnnnn,” their groans echoed through the classroom in annoyance.
Sighing Steve relented telling them he’s been married to his husband for a little over a decade, but they’d been together for almost 4. He was of course met with confusion and maybe a bit of hurt -he was their favorite teacher after all- but mostly confusion. Why had he kept his marriage a secret?
That’s when Jackson spoke up from where he was seated on his desk near the front of the classroom, “Dang! I was sure there was a blossoming romance starting between him and that Pols teacher Mr. Munson!”
“Hah! I think you mean blossomed romance J. Boom!” Their teacher exclaimed as he pulled up his and Eddie’s wedding photos on his phone. “That’s right I bagged him, kachow.”
“WHAT?!-” “gross don’t say kachow-” “called it”

Maxine was nearing the rebellious teenage years Steve was so scared of. She was already a feisty kid when he met her all these years ago, slingshotting cans off tree branches and fighting with her brother, and she made no sign of stopping. She was a savage on a skateboard, crashed other kids in arcade games and looked up to strong female role models, like Wonder Woman. Steve was happy to call her his daughter. Even if she hated it.
She liked to spend time actively, so he wasn’t surprised when she got into sports. It was a thing they could bond over. Recently, though, all she could talk about was music. She was pestering him about getting her a guitar, and he was slowly warming up to the idea. Robin, of course, was encouraging it.
He already took her to a music store, grabbing a couple of cassettes that made him dread the worst. She picked some rock bands and while Steve didn’t want to play on these stereotypes, he wasn’t thrilled to think she may become one of these brooding alternative kids dressed in black. She was feisty, but she was a radiating sun that he would rather keep burning than get shrouded by dark clouds.
And so when he heard the door slam loudly, he sighed softly, recognising an end of an era when he heard it.
Max stomped into the kitchen, fuming.
“They are cutting down the art department funds,” she said without prompting, her bag dropped unceremoniously on the floor.
That was not what he was expecting.
“What?” he frowned, watching her open the fridge and grab a box of chocolate milk. She angrily stabbed it with the straw.
“Exactly! They are transforming the practice room into a gym, and Mr Eddie had to move all the instruments into his class and the drama club.”
And there it was. The famous Mr Eddie. He was the reason Max took a sudden interest in music, and apparently, now the reason she was so furious about school funding injustice. Steve sighed.
“Unfortunately, the school thinks liberal arts aren’t as important as sports.”
Max’s eyes narrowed as she studied him. Her gaze slid down to his ancient swimming team hoodie.
“But you don’t think so?” Right?” Her eyes narrowed threateningly. Steve scoffed.
“I might have been a jock in high school, but my best friend plays in an orchestra. I think the funds should be divided equally.”
“Good,” Max drew out like she was content for now, but he wasn’t completely off the hook yet. She sat down in front of him, sipping from the milk box and studying him. “All the after-school practice has to be done at the drama club, which makes the schedule really tight. You know Mr Eddie used to give guitar lessons there? Now he’ll have to do house calls.”
“Mhm,” Steve nodded, eyeing her wearily. He flipped the page of the magazine he wasn’t reading.
“Mr Eddie used to practice there with his band too.”
“Mhm.”
“Now he has nowhere to do so.”
“Poor guy.”
“He said he’s looking for a place to practice. Told us to ask our parents.”
“Max…”
“We have a big garage.”
“Max.”
“Steve.”
He sighed.
“I’ll think about it. If he doesn’t find a better place, he can give me a call.”
Max let out a victorious whoop, but he held out his hand to stop her.
“Max, I’m serious. Only as a last option.”
“Fine,” she rolled her eyes.
And so, about a week later, Steve was picking up his phone to an unfamiliar voice.
“Mr Harrington? I’m Eddie Munson, Max’s music teacher. She told me you have some garage space I could borrow?”
Steve looked at the ceiling, leaning against the wall.
“Did she say it was only a last resort thing?”
The man on the other side chuckled.
“Oh, believe me, I wouldn’t be bothering one of my student’s parents if I had other options.”
“Okay. What do you need then?”
“I’ll take whatever you can give me, honestly. I’m kind of desperate,” the man sighed, and Steve felt a bit bad. The guy just wanted someplace to practice his craft.
“Okay, okay. So… I have a two-car garage space, but it’s only my car and I can park at the curb, you could have the whole space to yourself. I’m home most afternoons, so as long as you’re not too loud and give me a heads-up, any day works.”
“Hello?” he frowned when only silence answered him, but soon the man on the other side was laughing.
“Wow, you’re just as nice as Mad Max claimed.”
“She did? I thought I was, and I quote, ‘a raisin in her cereal’.”
The other man burst out laughing and Steve smiled.
“Ah, I’m not going to reveal her soft spots any further then.”
“Maybe I should show you the place before you commit? It might not be big enough for your needs.”
The man on the other side hummed in thought.
“Yeah, good thinking. Is today fine? I’m finishing in a couple of hours.”
“Sure. Do you have something to write, I’ll give you the address.”
Three hours later, the doorbell rang and Steve wiped his hands on the towel to open the door.
Eddie Munson was nothing that he expected from a music teacher, but after a second thought was what he should have expected from a music teacher who Max said was cool.
“Eddie Munson,” the man introduced himself, extending his hand full of chunky metal rings.
“Steve Harrington,” Steve shook it, the fingers unexpectedly rough against his skin.
The guy was of a smaller build than him, on par with his profession. His long hair was tied back, revealing a row of silver earrings. He was wearing a band tee and a leather jacket. He didn’t look like a teacher at all.
Steve motioned him inside.
“Come on, I’ll show you the garage.”
“It’s not in the basement, right? Should I be worried?”
Steve gave him a puzzled look.
“You know, leading a stranger to your basement to never be heard of again?” Munson explained.
Steve raised an eyebrow.
“Yeah, maybe not with the hawks I have for neighbours. Probably half the street knows I have a guest by now. So I better let you out at some point.”
“Some of these suburban moms should really get a job, huh?”
“They should, yeah.” Steve nodded, leading him through the kitchen to a plain side door. he opened it and flipped a switch. “Soo, that’s it. Would that work for you?”
The teacher stepped in, passing by Steve to look around. The garage was big, made for two cars, with only Steve’s Beamer taking up half the space. Besides some spare tires and boxes of Christmas decorations, there was nothing else inside.
The man spread his arms, spinning around. Steve let out a surprised snort. The guy was probably his age and a teacher on top of that.
“That would be great, Mr Harrington! Are you sure about that? Like, sure-sure?” He stood in front of him, and Steve’s mind has already been set, even without the hope glistening in the man’s eyes.
“I’m a man of my word,” he nodded.
Munson swayed on his heels.
“We play metal, though? Might not be your thing.” He smiled weakly, like he was expecting a rejection. Steve frowned at him.
“If they let you do it in school, I think my garage will be fine. I have headphones, too.”
Munson beamed at him, dimples at all. And it was like a punch in the gut, a feeling he hadn’t felt since Max’s brother.
“Thank you.”
“No problem,” he nodded stiffly, blinded by the soft metalhead in front of him. What did Max get him into?
Speak of the devil, there was a distant slam of the front door from the inside of the house. Steve winced.
“Want me to let you out this way,” he pointed to the garage door. “She won’t let you go that easy.”
Mr Munson only laughed.
“It’s not a problem. Mad Max is one of my favourite students.”
“I thought teachers aren’t supposed to play favourites?”
“I’m not the teacherest out there, truth be told.”
Steve eyed his ripped jeans.
“I can see that.”
He led them back to the kitchen, where Max was hidden head-first in the fridge. She leaned back when she heard the steps, and her eyes widened at the sight of two men.
“Mr Eddie!” She slammed the fridge close, and Steve winced as he heard the bottles inside rattle against one another. “You’ll be using our garage?”
“Seems so, kiddo.”
Max made a victorious fist pump.
“Mike’s gonna be so jealous!”
Munson let out a startled laugh, while Steve scrunched his nose.
“Don’t tell that’s all this is about. I thought we were doing something nice for Mr Munson.”
“We are, we are!” she placated him quickly, waving her hands. “Pissing off Mike is just a bonus. A very nice bonus.” She grinned sweetly.
“You’re, um…” Steve looked to the side to see the man scratching his cheek awkwardly. “The only parent who agreed. Most of them don’t trust me because I play metal.”
“Steve isn’t like that!” Max reassured quickly. “He’s not a judgmental bigot!”
Steve gawked at her choice of words while Munson laughed.
“A judgmental bigot wouldn’t raise such a great kid.”
“Duh.” Max beamed and Steve warmed all over.
Being a single father was frowned upon even without their backstory. And Max’s attitude usually fuelled negative comments about his parenting. So it was nice to hear something good for a change. Maybe Steve could even make a new friend in this shitty town.
The teacher stayed for a coffee and insisted on being called Eddie. Steve found out he and his band had a show in a few weeks and were planning a small tour across the state over the upcoming break. But most of the visit was just him listening to Max and her teacher talking about bands he had no idea about.
“I’ll tell the boys, and we could come over on Thursday? If that’s okay,” Eddie cocked his head as they led him to the door.
“Sure. Works for me.”
“Sweet,” Eddie smiled, and again it did something pleasant to Steve’s heart. “See you tomorrow then, Red.” He fist-bumped the girl. “And you, Steve,” he raised his fist towards him. It took Steve a second to react and knock it with his own, but Eddie didn’t seem to mind. He waved at them, and soon Steve was watching a ratty black van speed away from his curb.
“I told you he was cool!”
“Uh-huh.” Steve closed the door. “You did.”

teacher au where steve is a history teacher and his classroom is unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on the perspective) right next to what doubles as the art and music classroom for eddie.
steve finds eddie attractive from the moment the man starts working there, and also discovers that being upset about the music volume and general ruckus from his classroom is a great excuse to talk to the man frequently, even it means he’s complaining at him all the time.
meanwhile eddie’s just confused as to why the hot history teacher has hated him from the minute he started working at hawkins high. when he laments about this to his closest coworker (guidance counsellor robin) all he gets in response to his woes is an amused eyebrow raise.

Teacher!Steve isn't big on music himself, but he has a Spotify for his students so they can listen to the songs/artists they like when they're doing independent work/quizzes/etc. He makes them submit songs periodically throughout the year so it stays updated and all their music preferences are heard.
Naturally, all his students are excited to see what a mess his Spotify Wrapped is and Steve makes sure to schedule in time for each class period so they can go through it together when its released.
Of course, it's a hot mess but they all love it, especially the videos their top artists send in.
Steve generally has no idea who sings any of the songs on the various playlists and has a lot of fun putting a face to a voice as they scroll through each video. It's pretty standard selfie shots of the artists talking until they get to one where a man with curly hair and big brown eyes is hopping around like an excitable child, practically shouting his name into the camera and rambling about how much he "appreciates each and every one of the heathens who listens to Corroded Coffin."
Steve has to do a double take because, "wait what?! this is the guy that's always shouting and singing about demons?! but he's so cute!"
His first-period class bursts into laughter at his outburst and of course someone is videoing his reaction. It gets posted to TikTok before the dismissal bell rings and by the time lunch gets there, the video of Steve going heart eyes for Eddie Munson goes viral.
Steve's embarassed but he doesn't ask his student to take it down because he knows how much they've been hoping to go viral this year. Besides, its not like anyone important is every going to see it, right?
Wrong.
Of course, chronically online Eddie Munson stumbles upon the TikTok and promptly runs through the green room, declaring his love for the beautiful Mr. Harrington, who teaches history to high schoolers for a living. He forces their assistant to drop everything he's working on and track down this Mr. Harrington guy because Eddie will not rest until he can talk to him.
Fast forward two days and Steve is hiding in his classroom during lunch, avoiding his coworkers to shamelessly flirt with Eddie Munson via Zoom.

Eddie is in his studio live-streaming. He’s answering questions for an impromptu Q&A while he paints miniatures. He’s slow on answering because he keeps getting distracted by painting.
It’s during this that Steve comes into the room to grab a record from Eddie’s collection.
Eddie, a menace to society: Stevie! Baby, when did you lose your virginity?
Steve: *looks directly at the camera*
Steve: Stop asking me questions like that in front of your fifty most distant friends
Eddie: You think only fifty people watch me on here?
Steve: I don’t know why anybody would watch you literally watch paint dry.
Eddie:
Steve: All of you should rethink how you spend your time.
Eddie: …why do I feel like I just got scolded by a teacher for talking during study hall.

My Darling
"Who even is that guy?"
"That's my darling"
----
It starts with a post.
Eddie had posted a photo on Instagram holding his acoustic guitar, cross legged on a chair.
Recently he had been front cover of a magazine of 'him' wrapped around a young woman. Living the Rockstar life.
His agent had suggested he show a more domestic side to him, a softer side.
Hence the acoustic.
It was summer so Steve was off of work and sleeping on the couch behind him, blankets up to his ears. The only thing visible was his hair peeking out and his arm hanging over the side of the couch. A sleeve of tattoos running down it all the way to his knuckles. Eddie loved that arm. He loved the way the tattoo curved around his knuckles like water. His nice, big. veiny hand that-
WOAH off topic.
He had done half the tattoos himself and made sure he payed for it all.It was the least he could do for all Steve has done for him.
They met eight and a half years ago, Steve had seen Eddie play at shitty clubs and recognized his mop of hair getting hit in the alleyway.
Eddie thought he was a goner for sure until Steve ripped the guy off him.
Steve just shot him a smile and complimented his guitar skills.
Eddie fell to his knees. He was gone for him.
He invited Steve to band practice as a thank you since he didn't have much to offer.
Two weeks later they were dating and Steve has been their number one fan since.
When Eddie got the record deal he dedicated everything to Steve.
Everything always was for him. As it should be.
Anyways,
Eddie posted the photo excited to promote the acoustic cover of his hit song 'My Hero, My Darling'.
The comments instantly went ballistic asking who the random man behind him was. He definitely wasn't in the band and why would notorious lady killer Eddie Munson have a man in his house...he couldn't possibly have friends.
Eddie responded to one comment only, knowing the rest would sort itself out.
"That's my darling ❤️"
----
"Eddie," Steve was frowning at him, poking his side with his foot.
"Eddie look at me this is serious."
"Yes my love?"
"You outed yourself. You were doing such a good job keeping this a secret. This will change everything."
Eddie turns over until his holding Steve close to him, his face in his hands.
"Good. I'm tired of hiding you my darling. I'm tired of the accusations."
"But Eddie you OUTED yourself."
"I won't say anything about you, I'd never out you Stevie. But I'm done hiding that I'm a simple man in love."
"...me too. I'm done too."
"Darling are you sure? This is a big deal. What about your school? Your principal?"
"I don't care. Everyone important to me knows. My family, my real family, know and don't care. They do wonder why I've been single for eight years but they'll get over it."
"Marry me."
"What?"
"Marry me oh my god that's the hottest thing I've ever heard. I love you so much please I can't live another moment not having you mine. Besides, if you get fired that's definitely a lawsuit and you know I've been pleasing for you to quit so I can take care of you, but you love those damn kids. Just...be mine...please."
"I've been yours. Since the start. Since always." They both have tears in their eyes.
"Yes?"
"YES OF COURSE YES!"
They're giggling through their kisses.
---
"Heeeeyyy everyone thanks for joining my live. I have something super important to inform you on! I'm getting married!!!!!"
The comments instantly flood in questioning him on moving too fast, asking if he's on drugs. The usual.
"Oooooh you guys have no idea."
----
The photo goes up an hour after the live ends.
It's Steve sitting on the couch, glasses on, red pen in his mouth. He's wearing a thick sweater and grumbling grading papers.
He looks so soft, so smooth, it's Eddie's favorite picture. The next picture in the carousel is Steve backstage at his concert. They're holding onto each other like they need each other to breathe.
The last picture is a selfie taken minutes after. Eddie with his stage makeup sweating off his face smiling brightly at the camera. and Steve kissing his cheek. Eyes squinted shut and eyeliner thick, he had worn it as a treat for Eddie.
It was well received.
The caption reads:
"I'm so happy to announce I'm marrying my best friend and partner of eight years! Everyone meet my darling. Steve is a local middle school teacher who has literally saved my life more than once. He saved my heart. God, I love him so much.
P.s. yes the tours are in the summer so Stevie can travel with us. I'd never leave him."
---
Bonus engagement edition:
"YOU'RE GETTING MARRIED TO EDDIE MUNSON?!"
"Yes. We've been over this."
Eddie stuck out his hand to shake, "hi, Eddie Munson, nice to meet you."
"YOU HID THIS FOR EIGHT YEARS?!"
"Yes."
"I'M BASICALLY YOUR BROTHER! HE'S MY FAVORITE CELEBRITY!"
"Yes Dustin and you can't keep a secret."
"...fair...welcome to the family."
*inspired by my friend only learning her cousin was marrying someone famous when he showed up to Thanksgiving and she lost her mind

thinking about married teacher steve and rockstar eddie.
steve’s students like to poke fun at him for “not being cool” or “trying to be cool”, and steve just feeds into it and plays up his cluelessness to modern things and what’s “hip” nowadays. he always just tells them they have no idea, and they’re gonna eat their words one day when they see how cool he really is, but all the kids just laugh and think he’s being sarcastic.
one day a group in his class is talking about the popular rock music star eddie munson, about his music and how much they love him, and steve joins in, asking them about eddie and what kind of music he makes and so on. he says something like “oh yeah, i think i know munson. yeah he’s cool, makes good stuff” and the kids are like “as if you know eddie munson, mr h, there is no way”. steve just chuckles and says “if you say so”
meanwhile eddie EATS EACH STORY UP when steve comes home with a something new to tell him all about what his kids were saying to him today
honourable mention but eddie also is WEAK for steve’s teacher outfits, the button ups, the vests, when he wears a tie WITH his glasses consider eddie a dead man.
on the last day of class for the year steve has given his class almost a free period of sorts to just chat and muck about being that it’s so close to vacation and all, and ofc the topic of steve’s uncoolness comes up again, and he’s just all laughs and smiles not even trying to fight back while they poke harmless fun at him, just looking smug as shit knowing these kids are in for a treat.
the bell goes and they all start to pack up their things to leave, and steve calls out to get their attention, remember the homework, stay safe, have a good break and all that, but THEN who else walks through the classroom door but eddie. munson. heading straight towards steve telling him “hey babe, ready to go?”
“yep, just let me grab my stuff” steve says back, and the class is stunned silent. eddie walks over to steve’s desk and puts a hand on his back as steve is leaning over it putting books and pages into his bag, “you guys are all free to go” he looks up to the class, smug as ever.
as he and eddie head towards the door, steve stops and turns around back to his class one last time, whisper shouting over his shoulder “who’s cool now?”
eddie is laughing infront of him as they walk out together, listening to the classroom they’d just left erupt into chaos.

Steve stares down at the coffee cup, bottom lip near quivering. The edges of it are sharp: geometric shapes carved into its curved, green sides.
"Baby," Eddie says softly, as quiet as almost two decades ago when he'd just as tenderly confessed his doomed love to the boy he'd thought was straight.
"Baby," Eddie repeats with a touch more humour, knowing how emotional Steve becomes at the end of the school year. "What you got there, sweetheart?"
Steve looks up with eyes overflowing with emotion, not quite tearing up, but the hint of it hovering at their back. "She said I revitalised her love of learning."
"Big word," Eddie gently jokes but Steve's brow crumples even further as he chokes out, "I taught her that when--"
"Shh," Eddie interjects, swallowing his chuckle as he cups Steve's face fondly, thinking of every choked expression, every blubbering confession of a student doing their damned best in the face of everyone thinking they'd do their worst.
"She obviously had a great teacher, to give him such a great gift."
As expected, Steve starts to blubber again and Eddie feels his heart flow over for this wonderful man. A grown boy who looked after his nerdy flock in Hawkins, who then turned into a man that looked after all those that needed him the most.
Eddie will never stop wondering how he lucked out in life, in his partner, but he'll also never stop looking into this beautiful face of constellations and ask, "And what else, my love?"

For the love that is everything holy, unholy, and holy neutral, PLEASE pick this story back up. I want this continuation as a full on fic. I want so much more of this. No I NEED so much more of this. I am already in love with this story.
*puts mouth on microphone* I would like to ask about single dad steve for WIP title game please
hahah, can you believe i wrote this over a year ago, then promptly went 5k deep into the continuation and immediately forgot about it? bonkers. hahah. Here's a part of it:
Just as Steve expected, his neighbors started giving him the stink eye as soon as they got wind of what was happening in his garage. Eddie even offered to close it up not to make a scene but Steve protested the idea. Said he’s not going to let himself be terrorized in his own home and more so won’t let his guests suffocate in a closed garage.
Every Tuesday Steve was preparing dinner to the sound of metal vibrating through the walls. When he got a free moment, waiting for the water to boil or the oven to heat up, he would step into the little rehearsal space.
Corroded Coffin was just an arm’s reach away whenever he felt like listening in. He just had to open the door and could sit on one of the steps leading into the garage. The guys played many original songs but just as many covers, some of which Steve recognized. He has always been a pop guy himself, but both Billy and Max liked some harsher music. It grew on him regardless if he liked it or not.
And watching them play felt amazing. Sometimes, between being a single parent and owning a hair salon, he felt older than he actually was. But right outside his door, in his space, there were four guys his age, jumping around the garage with contagious energy and playing songs from simpler times. He found himself tapping his foot to a cover of Queen. To think that at first, he was hesitant to let them practice here. Now it was a highlight of his week.
Max’s teacher, Eddie, was jumping around like it was a real stage, not a cramped square of stone flooring. He was the lead guitarist, which Steve knew thanks to his kid’s lengthy ramblings about her teacher. The guy also did most of the singing, but all of them joined in, depending on the song. It was clear though who was the frontman of their band.
They were playing an especially energetic song tonight, one that left Steve bopping his head happily. The members of Corroded Coffin shared the sentiment, jumping around and swooshing their fairly impressive manes of hair.
Eddie noticed him halfway through the song and grinned like he always did. Steve grinned back, genuinely happy for being able to have his own little show in the cookie-cutter cul-de-sac in the middle of the day.
But the music teacher didn’t stop there. He approached the steps Steve was sitting on and motioned him to join them. Steve looked at him with confusion and Eddie used the seconds-long break in his part of the song to pull him up. He fumbled for a second but the overall energy and Munson’s feral grin loosened him enough that he let himself be crash-coursed into headbanging.
He hasn’t felt more alive in years.
Eddie played his guitar, jumping around Steve and throwing his hair around. Most of the singing in this song was done by Jeff so besides playing the guitar he could do as much of a show as he wanted. When the track came to an end, they were both panting, leaning into each other and grinning. Steve couldn’t stop the breathy laugh that escaped him.
“Have I told you guys how great you are yet?”
“Only every Tuesday!” Gareth piped up from behind his drums, grinning. Eddie laughed as well.
“Didn’t know it was your scene, Harrington,” Eddie teased with a glint in his eye. Steve shrugged.
“Picked up some stuff from my ex,” he explained shortly.
Eddie quirked up his eyebrow with interest, strumming his guitar softly.
“Was she a metalhead or something?”
Steve observed him for a second, considering if he should correct him. It’s been already a month since they first met and the initial interest he had in the musician was only growing. Maybe it was a good idea to come out and test the waters. Worst case scenario he would have enough of a reason to drop this feeling before it turned into something more.
“He had a thing for classic rock.”
A look of surprise passed through the man’s face. He quickly schooled it into something friendly, but Steve could tell there were a million questions buzzing beneath.
“I see. Well, great to see some of the Hawkins folks educated,” he grinned, and it was genuine enough that Steve knew he didn’t have to worry about any kind of prejudice. He did a cursory glance around the other band members but they either weren’t listening or didn’t care about his impromptu coming out. Some of the tension seeped out of his bones. He motioned to the steps he just abandoned.
“I have some coke if you’re interested.”
Eddie’s features softened.
“Dude, you’re letting us use the garage, we should be treating you.”
Steve scoffed.
“Either you drink it or Max and you don’t want to see her on this amount of caffeine.”
Eddie barked out a laugh, and it warmed Steve all over knowing he caused it.
“Okay, fair. Thank you, then,” he smiled genuinely, disarming Steve.
They had the sodas while Steve came back to the kitchen to cook the pasta. He was still waiting for Max to come back from school too. She had basketball practice that day, which she picked up in honor of her brother, after bullying the teachers long enough to put together a small team of girls to play. The dead brother spiel worked in her favor of course.
When the dinner was mostly ready, he stepped back into the garage, expecting another song he didn’t recognize, but instead, Eddie looked up at him, barely breaking out of their idle jamming.
“Do you know the words to Should I Stay or Should I Go?”
Steve frowned, taken aback by the abrupt question.
“I think so?” he answered hesitantly.
“Sweet,” Eddie grinned back at him. “Wanna sing for us?”
“Uh,” he hesitated, taken aback.
“C’mon, we’ll sing together,” Eddie offered and Steve hesitantly nodded. Eddie didn’t waste time and pulled him to the mic standing in the middle. It was the only one they had, rotating between Eddie and Jeff.
The familiar notes played around him and nudged with the metalhead's arm right against his, he joined him in singing.
Eddie’s voice was breathy from exertion, from playing for the past hour and jumping around. But here was a gleam in his eye, a delight from playing and maybe, maybe, from Steve agreeing to join them.
When the chorus came on, Steve felt confident enough to hip-check him out of the way and hoard the microphone for himself, He could hear Eddie cackling next to him, but he was now focused on singing and enjoying himself.
The song ended with cheers and a distant clapping. Someone whistled and Steve noticed Max applauding from the top of the stairs.
“Hey, if you’d want to sing for us sometimes, hit us up,” Jeff threw his arm around him. “You’re good,” he praised and Steve grinned his thanks.
Before he could say anything else though, someone was punching him in the ribs. He winced, knowing full well who it might be.
“You’re supposed to be my father, not a cool dude.”
Steve frowned.
“I don’t see how I can’t be both.”
“It’s a well-known natural order,” Eddie chimed in unprompted. “Parents can’t be cool.”
“Huh. Then I guess I should give you up,” he said, mock-seriously, making Max roll her eyes.
“Suuure, after all the legal shit we’ve been through,” she scoffed, looking at him in that way only teenagers could.
“Well, I think all the natural rules of a normal family are above us anyway, don’t you think?’ he raised his eyebrows, making Max smirk devilishly.
“Hell yeah. Fuck the rules.”
Steve pressed his lips not to scold her for language, but he looked to the side where, as he expected, Eddie was donning his proud teacher look. It warmed him up inside.
“Fuck the rules indeed, Red,” he grinned, holding his hand out for a high five,
Steve shook his head before gathering Max towards the kitchen.
“You guys keep it up, Max and I are gonna have dinner. Yell if you need anything.”
“Actually,” Eddie started, making both Harringtons turn in interest. “We have a show on Saturday if you guys wanna come.”
“Can I?” Max asked immediately, eyes darting between her teacher and Steve.
“We don’t usually have an audience this young, but with a guardian, it’s not gonna be a problem,” said Eddie, turning his gaze to Steve. He worried his bottom lip between his teeth.
“I usually work on the weekends, but I guess we could drop by.”
Max whooped happily and Steve couldn’t help but smile himself. He actually really wanted to see Eddie on stage, if he was anything like he saw today it would be a treat to witness.
“See you at the Hideout at 8 PM then,” Eddie grinned at them before they retreated to the kitchen.
At the table, Max eyed Steve with curiosity, pushing the broccoli on her plate out of the way. He was chewing with a distant look on his face, a foot tapping to the beat coming faintly from the closed door.
“The Hideout is a kinda shady place, don’t you think?”
Steve made a noncommittal grunt and shrugged before finally focusing his gaze on her. He frowned, cocking his head.
“Do you not wanna go?”
She scoffed, getting angry for something Steve couldn’t grasp.
“Do you want me to go?”
His frown deepened as he straightened up.
“Okay, wait. Do I want you to go to a concert with me? A concert we were invited to by your music teacher?” He raised his eyebrows, trying to find a hole in the idea.
“A metal concert. In a bar,” she pointed out, squinting at him. He squinted right back.
“So? You’ll be with me. I can get a leash if you’re insinuating you’re gonna cause problems.”
She puffed her cheeks, raising her hands.
“No insinuating here,” she assured. “Just, it’s not very,” she waved her hand. “Responsible parent of you.”
“No, but a very cool parent, I hope.”
“In your dreams”, she scoffed.
He smiled at her. She didn’t question his decision anymore, but Steve could feel her gaze on him later when they waved the band goodbye.
