I recced one of their other fics, which I had enjoyed a lot, and an anon asked me if I was reccing someone that had used one of my fic concepts without permission.

Finding out they have a tumblr, from someone who had put them on a do-not-read list because they found the situation too sketchy

All Age Diff Codywan Leads Back to Nixy (AKA I sent an ask to test the waters, dug a bit, and was thus informed that I did inspire the fic, though it was a different post, but that ‘modern au codywan is so common that it’s not like credit is needed. I reblogged with a meme in hopes that it would be a polite, lighthearted way to indicate they should still maybe add a credit link in an A/N)

About two months after that, I found that they had deleted their tumblr, added the fic to a hidden collection so it could no longer be accessed, and blocked me on AO3.

So who knows what the situation even is anymore, but that is the process. Mostly it’s just been very frustrating and a little baffling because. It could have all been resolved with a single sentence. Just one “this fic was inspired by these posts on tumblr” in an A/N, and nobody would have cared.

Capturing the ambience of Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2002)

This action game, which preceded Pandemic Studios' better-known Battlefront titles, takes players to prequel-era Star Wars locales.

Extracting sounds

TCW was released on all three 6th-gen consoles, each of which offers different audio files to extract. Xbox offers the highest quality in terms of bit- and sample-rate; its assets are readily available as WAV files. They can be extracted using a tool like extract-xiso. I also explored the Tetris Worlds multipack version of the game; it is identical for our purposes.

Gamecube offers very similar files, also in WAV format. Dolphin emulator can be used to explore, and extract, the file system of a compabile ISO image.

PS2 assets are in a very different format - MSB/MSH pairs. There is a dedicated tool called SoundFMVExtractor which claims to support extracting these, but I couldn't get it working. I noticed that vgmstream could play the SFX samples. I wondered where the game longer (i.e. ambient) streams were located, but soon gave up. In fact, from some playtesting, I don't believe this version has ambient streams.

Running the game

TCW has a password menu, with different codes for each version of the game. On Gamecube, enter FRAGFIESTA and GASMASK to unlock all multiplayer and singleplayer maps respectively. There are also Gecko cheats to accomplish the same unlocks but I couldn't get them working.

Capturing footage

Widescreen

Be sure to enable Widescreen display from TCW's in-game menus. I also recommend disabling the crosshairs and specifying first-person mode.

(Mostly) Removing the HUD

Since Dolphin emulator offers texture modification and free camera features, I recommend using it for capturing TCW's scenes.

We can almost entirely replace the HUD using this method - geometric elements like the green blips on your radar won't be affected. Since those elements disappear while the game is paused, we could theoretically create an invisible menu texture mod in a very similar fashion, and combine (i.e. chroma key) a pristine paused screenshot with our real-time captures.

Be warned that the textures used for the radar and the level's surface texture will look very similar. You can paint over them, and then load these modded versions, to easily identify which is which.

Staging your shots

Capture during ground segments, as air objectives place you into a constantly-moving craft. I experimented with capturing frames from fixed-camera cutscenes, but these are letterboxed, seemingly via vertex-colored orthographic overlays.

As a last resort you could capture the post-death screen, as it offers a few seconds of uninterrupted environmental footage. The post-victory screen is another option - it stays up for as long as we like, but obviously can't be triggered in as many locations.

Appendix 1: Abandoned HUD removal ideas

Perhaps you could create a Dolphin Graphics Mod to achieve this - but I couldn't get this feature working, and Discord chatter implied it's about to be overhauled soon anyway.

We could try editing the TCW's game files (look inside the Data/Interface folder). I also investigated modifying Dolphin's source code to skip all orthographic draw calls, but got stuck.

I think it's important to always point out that the clones in The Clone Wars and in Tales of the Jedi are whitewashed as well.

But also, no one really seems to mind either TCW or TOTJ? Only TBB is getting called out for the whitewashing.

And the whitewashing in TBB should be called out, but why do people always seem to overlook the whitewashing of clones in other media? Aside from artists doing a fantastic job depicting the clones with Maori features, I've only ever seen that one photo edit of a screenshot of Rex where his skin is made darker. Other than that, nothing. No calling for boycots when TOTJ gave us a still whitewashed Rex, no signing of petitions, nothing.

OP is one of the only people who acknowledges the whitewashing in TCW and I think it's harmful that so many people who speak of supporting fans of color have this clear bias towards the shows that either they watched years ago or focus on characters they do like, and it's disheartening to see so many people interacting with this post who are vocal about this issue in TBB and openly dislike this show, who won't bat an eyelash towards source material of whitewashed Rex or Jesse or Wolffe or anyone.

I've said this many times in my blog, don't only care about the whitewashing when it's about characters you don't like. That's a bias too, and a huge part of this is analyzing our own internal biases.

idk i feel like everyone should be uncomfortable that the clones were all based on a person of color and promptly whitewashed and recast to a white voice actor in the clone wars. the whitewashing of the clones ESPECIALLY in the bad batch is so blatant and it’s really gross that there is official star wars animation being released in 2022 that whitewashes the clones. and you can come up with as many in-canon excuses as you want (the argument for the whitewashing was because tbb was flawed or whatever) but it’s still fucking weird to go out of your way to make clones of a maori man then immediately change your mind and make them as white as possible. sorry to be a buzzkill or whatever but i’m personally not gonna boost their numbers for that shit no matter how much i enjoyed the clone wars

Having taught myself Aurebesh for my art and stories, I feel your pain!

"ATTE RUL3Z SOME TEXT" shows up a few times in TCW (I couldn't tell you all episodes specifically, sorry) as one of their go-to gibberish/filler phrases when they show a character using a device with a screen that the audience can see.

It's not always gibberish, though. I edited one of my screenshots from the Chip Conspiracy Arc in season 6 that has a good amount of legitimate Aurebesh (it even has a mistake!) within it.

Transcription was done on my phone so forgive the formatting.

There's plenty of aurebesh in games like Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi Survivor that I love to use for practice as well.

for a bit i thought maybe they were so audacious as to attempt to blend tem’s features with dbb’s (white) features but no?? the clones don’t really resemble him at all whatsoever?? idk where tf the jaw, cheekbones, chin, eye spacing, hairline & texture, skin tone and even face shape came from, i guess hell or something

& people have pointed out countless times how they nailed Typho so it’s not as if they just struggle with “✨ethnic✨” features, it was a choice to not really make any concentrated effort to portray tem faithfully? Typho’s model (minus the eyepatch obv) looks more like Temuera in many ways than the clone trooper model and it’s not even fucking based on him, and the two men don’t look alike in real life! They’re both brown men from New Zealand, both Polynesian, yes, but Tem is Māori and Jay is Samoan.

and yknow i could forgive like, the angularity in the lines of the face itself because in the movie and most of season 1 all of the core cast has that kind of exaggeration even where their live action actors totally lack it, and i think it was an art style thing they chose to carry over from the 2003 series? i still wouldn’t *like* it, but if that was it while Tem’s real skin tone and hair texture was intact then I don’t know if we’d be having this discourse. especially when looking at typho and literally seeing that it was done already (but even if there wasn’t already another example), there is no justifiable reason to leave out the bare minimum when adapting a person of color, period

it’s hard to imagine ppl like filoni and lucas literally speaking the words “no make him whiter” or whatever the fuck to the people working on these models at their computers, or for them to literally just make it this way unprompted and for every single person to sign off on it and nobody to be like wait a damn minute… this doesn’t look like the dude in the movie at all??? but also when you really look at all of this stuff and think it through and ask *why* this is “stylized” to the extent it is, where it hardly resembles Tem at all, and *why* this way was preferable to the alternative where it totally looks exactly like Jay, you really burn any plausible deniability there *possibly* miiiight have been.

Why was it fine for one but not the other? Is it that they didn’t want a character model with features like Typho’s shown as often and as prominently as the clones? Why might that be?
