catra is not a supportive friend/gf/sister/etc.

i see so many posts, including art and fics, that show catra being extremely supportive of adora from the very beginning, even when they were kids. but that's not what we see in canon.

catra stays quiet about shadow weaver manipulating adora all these years. she's apparently known all along that the horde sucks but she doesn't bother, like, talking to adora about it. catra simply doesn't give a shit about the horde hurting others, including her own best friend. catra uses adora's promise as an excuse, but she doesn't even look out for adora. not to mention she calls adora stupid for not realizing the abuse and manipulation sooner.

then we have catra in the portal reality, and she... slaps adora in the face when adora is reasonably freaking out. catra just forces her "to get some air" or "to relax", refusing to listen to adora... which is not even the first time in the show. catra has been calling her "crazy", "brain damaged", "stupid" etc. since EPISODE ONE, before they were enemies!

catra barely changes in s5, where she straight up abandons adora, who's begging on her knees. arguably, catra does not abandon adora in the heart... but it means nothing since catra still guilt-trips adora in her confession and, once again, she calls adora an "idiot" for not realizing catra has been in love with her the entire time.

it baffles me because the actual supportive friends adora has are glimmer and bow. they might not understand her at first, but they actually listen to her and they're patient and calm towards her. catra is NOTHING like that. i'm tired of everyone pretending she is.

god i love this band so much

the black: best of the singles, easily. would be best of this album if not for come what may. to be honest, though, i don't think it should have been a single. l'apelle du vide gives a really nice chance to rest and recover from the pure brutality of the previous tracks, and having something new afterwards would have been nice. to be clear, though, this is not a huge problem at ALL and it's frankly the only complaint i have about this song.

le noir: idk much french but i think "le noir" is french for "the black", so i'm guessing this is gonna be an alternate version of the title track but in french (kinda like the spanish version of temptation they did). the only reason i have to doubt that is that that's typically the sort of thing that would be a standalone release or on a deluxe version, but here they have it as the closing track of the album, so idk. we'll see!

oh it's only 3 minutes? maybe i was wrong. this violin is beautiful tho

okay that was an incredible album. final thoughts time!

first, i know this is kinda nitpicky, but there were way too many singles for this one. if it were me, i would have kept continuum and the black unreleased before this. the only new parts in the last part of the album were the acoustic instrumental tracks, which were good, but i would have wanted it to be a fully new experience, especially for the title track itself.

as for the good stuff, where the FUCK do i even begin??? this is somehow simultaneously the heaviest and most emotional this band has ever been, and in my opinion it's also the best. this album really is an emotional rollercoaster, with tracks like heaven shall burn and the call of the void being absolutely brutal, while songs like dbatc and all the acoustic stuff being super emotional, and then there's ALSO songs like come what may that are just both at once. besides the nitpick i had earlier, i never knew even remotely what to expect, and that was fantastic of them. i really wish i could forget every song and listen to the whole thing with fresh ears, because i can only imagine how hard it would hit having not heard any of the singles.

i do also wanna talk about the acoustic stuff specifically, because imminence has always done that SO WELL. i do wish we got a proper acoi track with vocals, though, because that kinda felt like it was missing here. not only did we get one both on turn the light on (love & grace) and heaven in hiding (the arabic one), but they had 3 whole fully acoustic songs, and i feel like it would have been nice if one of them had vocals as well, especially the last one. le noir felt to me more like an intermission than a closing track, and i wish it either had vocals, was longer and had more melody, or was moved to before the title track.

to be clear: this is an AMAZING album. it's gonna have to take something absolutely MASSIVE to beat this for my aoty. the complaints i have don't even come CLOSE to outweighing how masterfully done the album as a whole is, and they're also quite literally the only things i can complain about.

also, i'm not gonna do a full ranking of the tracks from worst to best until i listen to the album more, but come what may is the best track. like there's no contest.

I’m not sure if you’ve seen anyone comment about how “similar” tdp is to ATLA or even people going far as to claim that tdp is a “ripoff” esp with the Soren, Claudia, Viren arcs in comparison to Zuko, Azula, Ozai. I personally find Soren more similar in characterization (though not entirely the same) to Steve Palchuck from the Trollhunters/Tales of Arcadia series (not sure if you watched or not) and if any character comes to mind about being similar to Zuko, it’s definitely Hunter from the Owl House in terms of characterization and arcs. Idk if you’ve done a meta about this before but I love reading your thoughts (if you’re interested ofc).

So I have done a couple of metas on ATLA x TDP, mostly noting the thematic similarities between them (bloodbending and dark magic, pre-S4's puppeteering too lol!) and between Rayllum and Kataang as developing relationships. Meta comparing "Thunderfall" and "The Southern Raiders" here, meta talking about Kataang and Rayllum (s1-s2 as it was written pre-s3) here.

Also a more opinion based piece on why I could get behind Rayllum but have never really been a romantic Zutara fan (I see them far more as narrative siblings, which is still one of my favourite metas I have ever done)

I am a big Trollhunters fan (reblog more about it on main @thethiefandtheairbender and various other cartoons like SU, HTTYD, OTGW, Infinity Train, etc) and I adore Steve, but I don't think I'd really compare Soren to him, simply because while I love Steve and his development, Soren's development is undeniably deeper and more pyschological, I think.

That said the ATLA character that reminds me the most of Soren is Sokka. Goofy, prone to joking regardless of if the situation calls for it ( "Mind if I watch you two jerks do your jerk bending?") just to get a rise out of people, lmao, sometimes overly confident or reliant on their battle prowess, and desperate to prove themselves to their fathers. Sokka's attitude particularly in early book 1 reminds me of Soren's in s1, as well as their more skeptic attitude and relationships with their more magically inclined younger sisters

For Callum, he reminds me the most of Katara and Mai (again, true before S4, but interesting to see how much he shut down the way Mai largely did due to her family relationship, so again, kinda fun that worked out). Caring sibling, fast and harsh temper, strong in magic but untrained, artistic and precise (hi Mai), ride or die for their loved ones above all else, even above morals. For Rayla, she's basically running parallel arcs to Zuko and Aang in a lot of ways: grumpy, banished, immediately protects the sibling duo she encounters, facial markings, guilt complex galore (hi Aang). Rayllum is a good blend of all their personalities tbh

For Claudia, she reminds the most of Azula, and Katara, and Zuko, due to her loyalty to her father, willingness to do anything for her family, and being marked by the same sort of dual visual storytelling that Zuko's scar had.

And Hunter from the Owl House was definitely one of my faves! I think he falls into a category a lot of more modern day redemptions do, though, in terms of not letting their character actually be messy enough for long enough that it feels like maybe redemption isn't in the cards (hi Claudia my beloved, you excellent subversion sweetie). Or they go too far and don't give enough reason for a character to effectively redeem themselves (eyes SPOP with a long sigh). And just to clarify, I do think Claudia will have a redemption arc, but I appreciate how we're going about it thus far.

It's funny bc in some ways while Zuko has never been my favourite archetype (particularly for male characters), my protagonist in my og work is a bit like him: lost, angry, easily resentful, and she's my baby.

I think I'm just kinda over arcs of "Oh my father figure is Bad / imperialism is bad"? Because 1) Zuko did it so well and 2) I wanna see stories that go beyond those things or do new things with those concepts (please no more "rich white lesbian girl with a mean family" arcs I am. so tired). I think that's why I like TDP so much, because dark magic thematically and its explorations of self destructive behaviour add a lot of layers and interesting aspects to all the dynamics that I don't see most other media for this age demographic kinda taking advantage of, tbh

So, first of all, I love your metas! I love seeing someone being so passionate about AtLA which obviously has flaws, but I feel like people are too nostalgia blind to see it's flawed today, or I dunno.

Anyway, I've stumbled across a page of AtLA comic in which Aang was pretty upset about air acolytes aka his fan club tattooing their heads the Air Nomad style. The way Aang was ranting about his nation not being some kind of play kinda...rubbed me the wrong way.

I may be wrong, but like...wasn't Aang himself dressing up in Kyoshi's ceremonial outfit and acting comically in the show? Weren't they all dressing as Fire Nation people at some point for a long period of time? (I know it wasn't a play, it was necessary for their mission but still noone has ever questioned it). Wasn't Aang himself kinda judging Water Tribe for their life style ("Yeah, nothing's cozier than dead animal skins" said in a very sarcastic voice while Katara and Sokka are happy to interact with something that reminds them of home), also Fire Nation too, because they "have no fun" in their lives?

And now this guy is ranting about how a group of people can't use his culture just because they want to. I get it, it's a common theme these days and if done the right way, it would've been a nice message. But then, why not treat other nations with same respect you treat YOUR nation? (Almost worshipping it tbh)

With the way it's written it feels like a bad pandering retcon, or just adds more hypocrisy to Aang's character.

Oh lord... is Bryke really trying to talk about cultural appropriation? That makes as much sense as the Bobs Iger and Chapek spearheading diversity initiatives at Disney. Please don’t...

I don’t really follow the comics, so I don’t have context for this. I’m also never inclined to give Aang the benefit of the doubt because he’s terrible (at least he’s not arguing for anti-miscegenation laws in this scenario?). Still, I kind of understand what the thought process behind this might have been. 

 Again with the understanding that I have (and honestly don’t really want) the  context behind this, it sounds like an ESH situation. The acolytes are supposed to be learning about the Air Nomad culture from Aang (or at least that’s what he told Katara to make her okay with him entertaining his groupies). I just think at some point before they started shaving their heads and tattooing themselves up, it would have come up in conversation that the tattoos are only for master air benders. Aang not being a good teacher doesn’t shock me at all. The girls sort of get a pass because they’re young and wouldn’t necessarily know to ask the significance behind Aang’s shaved head and tattoos. Still, it’s never a good look to permanently alter your body to impress someone who is probably not interested in you.

Everyone was probably saying that he ought to just move on, but to be honest, he couldn’t... Actually, to be honest, no-one had told him to move on to his face yet. In fact, everyone was surprised he was doing so well, given how bad the circumstances were! The situation was stressing him out so much, even his dads were gently advising him to rethink things. (Well, that was part of the territory with one of them being a therapist and the other being a barista.)

“I got y’all some kouign-amann from the cafe,” said Dad, putting it down on the counter. His shirt had SLEEP scrawled on it with a Sharpie; it was the one that Remus had made for him as a joke. He still wore it. Huh.

“Sweetie, what’s a queen amahn?” asked Papa.

“It’s a... er, it’s like a... this is kinda like a croissant that had dreams of a muffin tin and salted caramel. One for you, babe.... then one for Doodlebug-”

“Can I leave some for Roman?” asked Remus.

They exchanged a glance.

“Of course you can,” said Papa with a smile. “Your candle’s on the table. Also, I got the news about being accepted into university? Good job, kiddo. You know, that was your father’s alma mater.”

“Are you sure you want to go to school right away after...? No problem taking a gap year.”

Papa glared at Dad. “Be nice.”

The phone started ringing. Remus answered it as quickly as he could.

“I’m so sorry Mr. Sanders I didn’t know that someone was actually getting these messages I thought the line was out,” he said within a few seconds before the person on the other side sighed.

“No, it’s quite all right. And Virgil’s all right, by the way, if you prefer. I... I was just looking through his things for the first time. You know, it being a holiday and all... Memories, things like that.”

“Yeah, I understand.”

“I just turned the phone back on, I’m getting a lot of messages.”

“Oh.” Remus stared at the wall, trying to come to terms with everything. “Well, I--”

“I’m not going to stop paying for his phone. I’m sorry, I just... I still have his voicemails on it, and I can’t stand the thought of it going offline either.”

“Right, I... I listen to it too.”

“I happened upon the last one he sent to you.”

“You looked at the messages?”

“I only looked over when I stopped getting new ones, but I saw the last question he sent you. For your ring size.”

“Yeah? He asked my ring size so that he could--”

“There’s no easy way to say this, but.. I found something of his. Can you come over?”

“I’m sorry, I can’t, but can you please tell me what it was? Please?”

“I really think I should tell you this in person.”

“Please, Mr. Sanders. Please, I... I can’t manage that.”

He sighed. “All right, Remus. I found an early acceptance letter to SJAU, and... and a ringbox.”

Remus felt his grasp on the phone grow weak. It fell onto the bed, Mr. Sanders’ voice still clear.

“I think he was going to ask for you to....”

“No, we... We were just out of high school, I-- that doesn’t make sense.”

“He always was one for those romantic gestures. There’s some poems here, too. A life-plan. I’m not sure exactly what malacology is, but--”

“Mollusks. Like octopi and squids.. Sorry for cutting you off, what was that?”

“Some of it’s in your handwriting, but one of the entries is ‘ask him’, for the day after... you know.”

God, he could hear his sad smile through the phone. He knew exactly how Mr. Sanders looked right now just talking to him, probably wearing that hoodie that was too big on him, in a dusty room full of things that used to belong to the most vibrant person that Remus had ever met.

But then Roman had died.

He was the most wonderful person, and he had just died.

“I’ll come over to deliver the ring to you. Is that okay?”

“Yeah. Yeah, that’s... that’s fine. Uh, call my dads first, though. They’re still not convinced I’m doing okay.”

“I understand. I’ll talk to you later, Remus.”

“Thank you, Mr. Sanders.”

The line went dead in his hands.

Remus held himself and wept.

Finished ATLA and I have some closing thoughts: 

-Ozai is a little bitch 

-Since Aang is the Avatar, couldn’t he have learned metalbending and bloodbending like Toph and Katara? That fight would have gone way quicker tbh 

-That final Agni Kai remains one of the most beautiful sequences in a cartoon that I have ever seen 

-When as a kid I first saw Azula’s descent into madness, I thought it served her right, and that it proved she was a power hungry monster who would stop at nothing to get whatever she wants however she wants it. But I was missing other pieces of information, because the first time around, I had never seen nearly half of the series. I didn’t see her most trusted people betray her. I didn’t see that scene with her father where he tells her she’s not coming with him. And, as a younger kid lacking some critical thinking skills that I now have, I didn’t see it for what it was. Now, as an adult who has the full context of the show and a lot more critical thinking skills, Azula is just... unbearably sad to watch. 

-The fact that Ozai sounds like the Joker (Mark Hamill) is pretty fitting imo 

-Definitely got anime vibes from some of the scenes, but also it reminded me a lot of Teen Titans. I wonder if some of the same people worked on both? 

-I would pay big money (if I had it) to see the White Lotus guys absolutely wrecking the army, specifically Iroh 

-With everything we saw about Ozai and Sozin, it really makes me wonder more about Azulon. Obviously he followed in Sozin’s footsteps, but to what extent? What were his specific aims? What atrocities did he commit in the war? idk it just feels like we didn’t hear very much about him at all and that seems... kinda odd 

-Obvious praise to Mark Hamill as Ozai (because I have yet to hear Mark Hamill not do his job well), but I also want to point out that all the VAs did a damn good job. However, some that stand out to me in particular are: Mako and Greg Baldwin as Iroh, Dante Basco as Zuko, and Grey DeLisle as Azula. 

-Ok no seriously what was up with the Joo Dees in Ba Sing Se and are they alright??? 

-I fully blame Zuko for my lifelong attachment to antagonists with a redemption arc 

-I also fully blame Zuko for my attachment to redemption arcs 

-Was Zuko at all aware that Jet died like right after the last time he saw him before they saw that play on Ember Island?? Because that doesn’t seem like the best thing to find out from a play, you feel?

Mostly about whatever the fuck that thing Rhys is handing us is, how it ties into the dig site we see like maybe it’s a piece to activate it, maybe the dig site isn’t a Vault but instead a teleporter or something and needs multiple pieces to activate. so i guess kinda like a Vault but not that kind of Vault. Also if said dig site is actually on Promethea because that’s, like, DEFINITELY Elpis behind it. and like, okay, maybe we used the giant space gun to destroy the asteroid fields and make room for elpis and teleport elpis there, or maybe we teleported the dig site to pandora because it needs to be opened since Moon = Key and maybe Promethea’s moon was destroyed by the giant space gun (TM) and turned into asteroid belt, or maybe the dig site was always ON pandora and it’s not actually a Vault (because the Map would have pointed it out), but still. lots of possibilities here. oh and i go over the Battleborn easter egg and talk about Tannis is Not What She Seems (and pray she won’t end up being evil bc I love her) and I wanna believe the Eridians sent that message, not the cult ‘cause fuck those guys they probably can’t see the future they probably just adopted the name. also I ramble about how gorgeous this planet is for like... 30 minutes. but damn it really is pretty.

yeah that’s the most important part of this description for me. I really really like the idea of that, and it could tie into the whole Mayhem is Coming tagline for the game as, like many people have speculated, the Mayhem we hear about is the spreading of the cult/the psychos across the universe. A very interesting tie-in to the marketing campaign, as it’s clear we’re now the target of this cult propaganda, like the citizens of Promethea are (were? this is all past-tense since marcus is telling this story, isn’t it?)... like the citizens of Promethea were.

And we know that Atlas is trying to protect the citizens in the tunnels, so it’d be really interesting to see the two get into a direct conflict over a group of citizens. Like Lorelei tells us it's a hostage situation or whatever and we run in and it’s more of a brainwashing situation. Worse if the citizens decided to switch over without any brainwashing. oof.

im also curious about the number of hexagons we see on Promethea. The shapes look identical to the ones on Pandora’s page, so I’m curious if this is an accurate representation of how many areas will be on each planet.

We do know that Pandora has more than those 3 listed areas (from Supmatto’s new video! can’t believe i missed the stream. ah well.)

“Covenant Pass”. I wanna believe this is near the area where we go find Sanctuary-III, at the very least that one tunnel-y area?

Also thinking it may not be the name of a huge area, but instead the name of one of the smaller areas within that area? like the ones where when you discover it you get experience points? yeah.

the name makes me think this is someway related to the CoV cause of the word ‘covenant’, an agreement. We also know this area is directly near this one bandit camp which I’ve theorized before is a sun smasher camp

(you can see the back of sanctuary-III near both areas) 

so it’s possible there was an agreement made and both could pass freely through that one tunnel, or the twins were able to build that wall close to this camp. idk, just spitballing ideas.

So then it is possible there’s only 3ish areas on Pandora, but I really hope not unless they are BIG areas. There are most likely more than 3.

For Promethea we got the Titan Skyway, the Atlas Campus, and the Meridian Seaport.

Titan Skyway reads to me like that giant road we keep seeing in the trailers 

like this one, which is giving me huge Bloodshot Stronghold (Damtop) vibes. Which is one of my favorite levels to play as melee Zer0 with execute and many must fall so... please let this be what i think it is. i may end up running that map just for funsies at the end of the game. mm if it didn’t take running the actual bloodshot stronghold every time i wanted to play the damtop level, i’d be running it all the time. sigh.

Atlas Campus immediately made me think of the Meridian Metroplex, but that’s definitely not it. In the instagram trailer we see Rhys on the ‘Atlas HQ rooftop’ with Zer0, so I’m gonna imagine Rhys is somewhere in the Atlas Campus.

Now if this is like an actual college campus, which i don’t think gearbox would do due to the implications, that’d be wild. I heard they had a mall designed for somewhere in the meridian metroplex, but we’re probably not actually allowed inside. which makes me sad, but also it probably holds no significance on the story. but then again... neither did caustic caverns. hmmmmmmmmm

I can’t imagine gearbox would be using footage that ISN’T from the planet they’re showcasing in a video about said planet. because that’s naughty. Plus, Rhys is shown giving us something that looks very similar to the tech in that area, and I can’t imagine we’d go through all that trouble just to get that tech then immediately go back to Pandora with whatever it is. whatever happened to the Promethean Vault Key we see in the We Are Mayhem trailer?

so there’s 2 options here if we’re under the assumption that dig site is/was on Promethea.

This dig site was moved from Promethea to Pandora

OR

Elpis was moved from Pandora to Promethea

Now i went over ALL of this in an old post. (seriously, give this a read if you haven't already, i go into this in a lot more detail than i will here). but we kinda got some new information.

My first instinct is that this dig site is on (or moved to) Pandora. just, 100% Pandora. the moon, the spiky rocks in the background, what look like Rakk near the back, there’s no asteroid belt in the sky. etc. etc.

do the blue sparkles have anything to do with it? maybe!

Also again, im not 100% certain this is actually a Vault. It just... doesn’t feel right to me. If this was actually on Pandora the entire time, then we’d have known about it through the Vault Map. We would have gone to open the 3rd Vault on Pandora before bl3 even began. If this really has been on Pandora the whole time, I do believe this isn’t actually a Vault. I go over this in that previous post I’ve made and I’m still standing by it. I think this is just an Eridian ruin and the Vault shape is just a statue or whatever. I could be 100% wrong, but that’s my first instinct if we’re being lead to believe this is on Pandora. 

Now I’m curious why this dig site was never mentioned in bl2 if it WAS on Pandora this whole time. And, again, if it actually does end up being a Vault, there’d be a huge plot hole with the whole Vault Map thing if it was on Pandora all along.

So was it moved here? Yeah... probably. For what reason? I... have no idea. How? similar answer. Lily couldnt’ve done it, she doesn’t have her powers anymore. Maybe activating it with whatever Rhys gives us makes it teleport to Pandora. For... reasons.

If it is a Vault, maybe it requires Elpis to open it. for some reason. We know Moon equals Key, so it could play into that. It definitely looks like it’s positioned directly in line with elpis.

but why would a Vault built on Promethea need a moon from a totally different planet to open it?

Because Promethea’s moon was destroyed.

That asteroid belt? I don’t think that’s there just for funsies (okay maybe the artists had funsies but the actual writing? yeah). And that big gun looking thing we see in both concept art and in the trailer? i think that thing fucked up Promethea’s moon to the point it shattered. So they couldn’t open that Vault.

Spiky rocks? Well! We hear typhon mention a quarry, don’t we? one with brittle rock. This very well could be the quazmarian quarry he talked about where he found that very first Vault (and Vault Key). After all, if he fell into a hole and found it, it makes sense that there would be a shitload of dig teams trying to clear it out for easy access.

Rakk? We see those on Athenas, too, during the Happy Together trailer. Plus, they’re super chubby on the bottoms compared to what we see of the Rakk in the Claptrap Presents Pandora video. Maybe they’re not even Rakk.

Finally. Ah. The asteroid belt.

Well, if you believe that that giant gun could’ve obliterated Promethea’s moon, then is it so hard to turn around and believe that it’s actually obliterated the asteroids surrounding Promethea?

in fact, if we really ARE moving Elpis to Promethea, wouldn’t it make sense that we can’t have asteroids hitting Elpis for fear of worsening the Crackening and breaking our own moon?

yeah, they COULD be celebrating the destruction of Elpis (because i would not be surprised if those are both near the same area)

lets think of something new, though. Elpis being blown up was totally 2015, with Zarpedon. That’s SO last season, Calypsos.

Plus, why would the calypsos even want the moon destroyed? is that not the home of a Vault that would allow them to see the future? how fucking powerful would that be, being able to see the future??? Jack knew what he had to do to win the Pandora games (even if he uhhh didn’t get to see that last bit because of Lilith), so why wouldn’t the Calypsos want to see their own futures?

There is the argument that they’ve already gone to Elpis and didn’t like what the Vault showed them, but I kinda assumed that they’d have gotten the funky eye things like Zarpedon did if they really did see what the Vault showed them. Given that Jack’s was interrupted by Lilith, we don’t really know if that’s truly the case.

I’m 100% down to blow up the moon cause Good Riddance, but also it needs to make sense WHY the calypsos want it blown up other than like shits and giggles? which... fine, but the story..? Elpis has to be important somehow. They have to want it blown up for some reason. A show of power? awesome, maybe they got that giant space gun. Moon = Key, so maybe they think if we can’t get this Vault, nobody can? sure why not. Destroying Pandora? Sure, but why blow up elpis when u could just also blow up pandora? 

either way, if the game gives us an actual reason as to why the twins are blowing up the moon, we’re all fine and dandy. if they’re going it just because then yeah, im gonna get kinda testy. 

anyway my point IS

The effect around elpis here looks strikingly familiar to the effect that appears around Lilith (and the cultists) when they’re teleported.

so it would be much cooler if, instead of blowing up Elpis, they were actually celebrating its movement. 

And it would be very interesting then, if this tied into that Easter Egg we got.

Because yeah im still iffy on the implication that this is from the Calypso twins. Why wouldn’t they want the Vaults opened? isn’t that the grand plan?

maybe this could be from the Eridians or the Guardians on Elpis. If Elpis was teleported from Pandora to Elpis, maybe the translation from Eridian -> English is slightly off, or simplified for the message. (on vs orbiting for example)

Visit Promethea -> Where we are right now, or where we’re going to go. We need you there.

Children of the Vault -> Yes, it could be the CoV cult that’s being referenced, but the way this is broadcasted, through morse code, spoken like an actual cryptic message and not, you know, with that Calypso flair... me thinks the cult simply adopted the name “Children of the Vault”. I think this may either be referencing Sirens, or the Vault Hunters/Crimson Raiders. Maybe the twins picked up this broadcast and that’s why they immediately head to Promethea after they steal Lilith’s powers.

We are not on Pandora anymore -> shit dudes we got yeeted to Promethea, help us. Or... we’ve moved elsewhere. We’re not nearby, we escaped, we fled, come find us on Promethea. 

Tannis is not what she seems -> this one... I don’t believe the Calypsos actually know anything about Tannis. If they do, then she was possibly the one to rescue/experiment on them, turning them into artificial Sirens or whatever, but then... isn’t Tannis exactly what she seems? She’s crazy, she totally would experiment on the twins. That is EXACTLY what she seems like. 

The people who would know about Tannis not being what she seems... the people who can see the future? The Guardians of the Sentinel’s Vault (maybe just the Guardians/Eridians in general). The Watcher can speak (speak? she uses telepathy, doesn’t she? that’s why Brick asks Lilith what she says) eloquently, I imagine there has to be more than one Watcher-like Guardian. Or this is the Watcher herself sending the message. 

Either way, if, later on in the game, Tannis starts showing signs of not being what she seems, then... wouldn’t it make sense that the only characters who knew this were the ones who could see the future? And given the new info, it makes sense that the Guardians/Eridians/yougetthegist would know her by name, because she could be the one who turned herself into an artificial Siren.  Or figured out how to create artificial Sirens. Whichever (both?). Which is kinda big news in the Eridian world, I’m sure. Plus, the wording using ‘What’ instead of ‘Who’ is kinda a big pointer. I’m almost leaning towards the idea that Tannis tried to give herself Angel’s phaseshifting abilities. I can’t see Tannis with actual offensive abilities... It wouldn’t really fit her character. But I can 100% see her with mad computer hacking skills, to the point she could ruin anything with a flick of her wrist. Yeah, I can see that. 

And I really hope Tannis doesn’t end up being a villain. She could do so much good with her intelligence and newfound powers and tbh it’s really nice seeing a character with autism not treated like Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory (the butt of every joke). She feels real to me (as someone with autism)- she’s got her obsession (Eridians/Sirens/the Vaults), her crazy intelligence, the social phobia/unawareness. I really like her as a character (going from betraying us in bl1 to realizing her mistake and immediately trying to help and assisting the Crimson Raiders) and I’d really hate for her to become the villain just for... idk a shock twist? The shock twist should be that she’s a Siren or whatever, not that she’s going to betray us. I like Tannis :( And all the message says is Tannis is Not What She Seems, not that we shouldn’t trust her or that she’s going to betray us.

Do Not Open the Vaults -> well this is the whole thing, isn’t it? this is why I think this message has some sort of Eridian origin, instead of the Calypsos cult. The Calypsos WANT the Vaults open. They want that ‘universe-destroying’ power. They want to absorb the powers of the Vault monsters. Shit, even we Vault Hunters want to open the Vaults for some of that sweet, sweet loot. But who doesn’t want the Vaults opened? The Eridians.

im really excited to see it glowing. especially since it’s glowing red, like the Vault Map/key/you know. I hope that has some significance. 

i did boost the brightness and noticed it was part of a wall, not just one slab found elsewhere. makes me think this is part of a Temple. maybe part of the dig site below? we know that one is connected to some sort of building. and if it glows red, that’d be a really neat tie in to why Atlas always has that glowing red aesthetic going on in their bases.

still not done talking about this shot. yeah the stuff on the right looks similar to the thing Rhys hands us. NOT why i brought it back up tho. The guardian statues in the back seem very ‘low poly’. VERY different to the guardian statues we have on Pandora. they’re also holding staffs which is new.

im pretty sure i’ve mentioned this before, but i love that they named this part of the city Meridian and then kept the Eridian logo in the spelling. it’s so fuckin dorky to me.

also i know we’re supposed to hate these robos, but at least they’re getting some characterization as enemies. the loaderbots in bl2 do this but not to a degree that they get their own interactions (LB being the exception of course). I like this.

also i love that parts of the city are color coded. like red and blue parts are different areas. It’s such a neat way to help people not get lost (cough, me) and it fits great into the design of the city with the neon lights and bright colors. I noticed this in the gameplay demo as well, tho i don’t remember if it was followed. Also I’m pretty sure that symbol up there

i think this is going to be my favorite area to visit on Promethea, hands down. I love this little living area. It feels so unlike anywhere we’ve visited in previous games, like it feels like somewhere Gaige could be from. Actually, iirc Roland was from Promethea, wasn’t he? Be wild if we visited his house here. Anyway, I’m also excited about the trees. Fucking! Trees!

and cars!!! holy shit yeah on Pandora we only ever saw like light runners or bandit technicals and the occasional bus. all the cars were broken down and stripped for parts! It’s really cool to see actual full cars here.

lol im actually- i just love this area. i love it so much. this is lovely. i love the giant glowing reactor in the background too, i 100% hope we get to interact with that (posssssibly blow it up. maybe just a little.) I can see this area being the area we have to run through to reach the entrance of that thing. I mean, it’s just RIGHT THERE.

Also would not be surprised if this KV fellow is waiting for us there. “Who wants to BANG a billionaire indeed”. He’s totally gonna be a boss fight. BANG i imagine means more shooty shooty than innuendo... innuendo...

Another shot of the city. It’s so fucking beautiful. I really love how they went all out for this. Opportunity was great, but it wasn’t nice to look at. Promethea is fucking STUNNING. I love this place way too much. Never even been here before.

also i love the fog coming up from the bottom. Maybe this shot is taken from the water? god if we get to go on the water and then it starts fogging up i might actually start crying lol.

this building is my favorite by far i think. I love the way the middle turns in. I have no idea how that’d work like... from an inside standpoint, cause the ground would just be slanted under you but im sure they made it work somehow.

anyway. im gonna go cry myself to sleep over how beautiful this game is. sorry i talked like... WAY too much during this one lol.

also i just thought of this while writing the tl;dr but maybe that item rhys gives us is after all the Promethea stuff is over, even the Vault(s), maybe we need it to activate something in that vault statue area on Pandora and that’s our way to like some important Vault or the Eridian homeworld or smth and we gotta collect all the pieces to activate it. like it’s a teleporter. Maybe Rhys had a piece because that’s what was in the Vault of the Traveller. I mean it would make sense because if you didn’t want someone to have something, you fuckin hide it in a box that’s teleporting across the galaxy at random intervals. That might be our way to the Eridian Homeworld. Now wouldn’t that be neato...

2021

It’s another year to say good bye to an another to welcome.

Let’s run through 2021

January tbh, i cant remember what happened this month. started to look for places to live at on my own. i just remember being extremely stressed out going into the new year. but i swear, when am i not?

February Wen’s baby shower. This.. this. yeah. it’s so crazy to think how Wen and Cam got married Dec 2020 and had their first child. These are things that I thought I was going to be living through. But I remind myself that I have the ability to do whatever I want to do without needing think about a family.

March moved into my own place, on my own. for the first time ever.         It’s so odd to think that I waited until I was 28 to move out on my own. Without family, no roommates, no boyfriend. Just me and only me. it’s so odd to look back at all that time I felt.. well still do... the need to have someone around me for security.

April Awh little pupparooo corgi. T_T literally cried when we picked him up from the airport. 

May helicopter ride over Oakland and SF, completed with a dinner celebration at Niku. Oh and also traded in my Passat for the Atlas Cross Sport

June Kevin and Gary. Donovan. Kaiya. Sunbathing. Hella pineapple buns from SF lol HBD to Ate Twins

July MOCHI in SF yum! Met bb’s family and took them out to SF. Corgiroo’s first day at school and first road trip to SoCal!  August Happy sweet 16 Tay and Jun! Kaiya’s baptism! First flight to SEA and Japanese Sandwiches :( snipsnip for mister corgs

September Happy 30 and 70 to Mommy and Me! She though the celebration was just for us but surprise Mommy! Our cakes tho, amazing! Thanks Butter& in SF. Road Trip to OR for Mommy’s birthday. Birthday week trip to TX, went TX city hopping, met with family :) Virgin Hotel! Ahfreakingmazing!                      Figure I add this in too. - sanha, bin, and jinwoo show up next, and jinwoo had already been established as that trio’s leader after saving the younger boys from a monster

- sanha and bin are both claimed fairly soon, sanha as a son of antheia, a minor flower goddess, and bin as a son of achelois, a minor moon goddess

- jinwoo: of fucking course you’re a child of a MOON goddess, your name is MOON Bin

- jinwoo is claimed a few days late, as a son of atlas

- “lmao u got claimed late, loser”

- dongmin joins the group last, and as soon as everyone lays eyes on him, they have him pegged as either apollo or aphrodite

- suddenly a fucking skULL IS HANGING ABOVE HIS HEAD AND THE BOY GIVES THE MOST BEAUTIFUL, BLINDING SMILE YOU’D EVER SEEN

- okay now onto their individual personalities (under the cut):

- mj:

- is always somehow winning everything even tho he doesn’t seem to be very good at things??

- but he’s just so positive at every capture-the-flag or any competition, cheering everyone on to do their best

- jinwoo:

- is the leader and often feels the weight of the whole team on his shoulders, like he’s holding up the world

- small but is sO STRONG

- can literally carry anything on his back, gives impromptu and sometimes unwanted piggy back rides

- dongmin:

- is literally the happiest freaking son of hades

- knows the horrors of death and goes out of his way to make sure everyone appreciates life, but also reminds them not to fear death

- “yeah,,, my dad kinda sucks,,,, but hey!!!! i just want to sing and love minions!!!!”

- bin:

- is that weird kid that sits on his roof at night and sings to the stars

- one day someone asks him why he does that, and he says “oh, they like it”

- they’re like “they cant hear you” and then the next night when bin sings, there’s a shooting star across the sky

- minhyuk:

- is not a fan of the beach bc sand up the ass is a nono

- boy didn’t even know how to swim until two years ago

- likes making water dance and sometimes uses it to add cool effects to his dance routines

- sanha:

- is the softest flower boy

- plays guitar and sings to his flowers bc he says it helps them grow

- everyone makes fun of him for being a weak flower boy but heck did you know you see this flower on this type of dangerous poison plant/ivy?? what is it doing in your room??? wild

- now for the best part, how they all interact with each other:

- jinwoo can carry the whole maknae line at once, just watch; he asked mj to climb on as well, but mj was like “bitch i may be lucky but i aint stupid”

- bin and sanha sit on the roof of bin’s cabin at night to sing to the stars together, and on the roof of sanha’s cabin during the day to sing to the vines and the trees

- jinwoo can also carry mental burdens and is a good listener so the others love to talk about their feelings with him

- minhyuk likes to mess with the water in sanha’s cup at mealtimes, either splashing him in the face, or making it avoid his mouth whenever he tries to drink it

- bin is a momma’s boy but his momma is so done with him tbh; he stuffed his face at dinner one day and dongmin was like “ur gonna puke if u eat that much” and bc his mom also does healing, bin’s like “oh it’s ok, it’s a full moon, i’ll make a sacrifice to my mom tonight, and she’ll heal me :)” but his mom ignores him and lets the dumb shit have tummy aches for a week

- people think that sanha and dongmin wouldn’t get along bc their parents are complete opposites bUT THEY’RE BEST FRIENDS AND ARE BOTH SUNSHINE BOYS, AND SANHA REMINDS HIM TO LOVE LIFE, AND DONGMIN KEEPS HIM FROM BEING A NAIVE FLOWER BOY AND MAKES SURE NO ONE TAKES ADVANTAGE OF HIS SOFT BOY

- going back to how jinwoo can carry literally anything, he randomly picks up his friends and gives them “piggyback rides” ; the boys have varying reactions to it, but the Soft Boys, bin and sanha, love it the most

- sanha makes minhyuk begrudgingly water his plants, and asks him to sing to them; minhyuk does it when he thinks he’s alone but sanha sees him and cries a little bit

- all the members joke that bin can breathe in space and he’s like “i’ve tried, it hurts” “bin what the fuck”

- when sanha gets really happy sometimes too many flowers grow around him and dongmin has to like make them die bc like dude really??? in my room???

- sometimes the boys make bets on really crazy things (especially jinwoo bc he strength) and mj has to begrudgingly help them out, unless it benefits him, then he will for sure make sure he wins

- sometimes when minhyuk dances, he just jumps in the air and trusts jinwoo, who is shorter than him, to catch him in the air, and it’s annoying but jinwoo can’t help but laugh when he does it

- one time, jinwoo didn’t catch him, and they ended up in a mess of limbs and bruises and bumps, so bin had to heal them

- dongmin is the scary back up guy mj brings around with him, bc nobody wants to fuck with a man that never loses and his death friend

- they’re the weirdest group of friends at camp and nobody quite knows what to make of them, but they’re all happy with each other and can’t wait for next summer to come around

You ship zutara? :)

Um, nope, but I also don’t have any problem with the ship. I’m basically neutral to it, and I’m absolutely neutral to the Zutara vs. Kataang ship wars too. I see issues and virtues to both ships, though I tend to use Kataang in my stories because it’s very much easier to establish, Zutara takes more time and needs more attention, heh… (plus it does feel kinda weird to have Sokka and Azula and then Zuko and Katara too in the same story, I know some people do it but it’s still kinda odd to me).

Anyways, if you want a full breakdown of what I think of Zutara:

The pros: a lot of what I say to the favor of my beloved OTP can be said for Zutara too. Water and fire, lots in common but still some differences between them where they can influence each other (namely, Katara’s morality may not be perfect but it’s definitely better than Zuko’s, so he can learn a bit from her), they have enough interactions and their friendship develops relatively nicely through the show despite Katara’s grudge on him was pretty strong. I do agree on the notion that the ideas of balance are more clear in Zutara than in Kataang, since we’re talking about directly opposite elements.

The show also emphasized they were a good team, such as in that battle against Melon Lord, making them fight back to back. It was cool for them to do that. They could learn a lot of things from each other, whether as friends or as lovers. 

The cons: THEY TEAMED UP TO TAKE DOWN MY GIRL!!! U-Uh, okay, seriously now…

Katara has a very big problem when it comes to Zuko making mistakes. Realistically speaking, this guy literally tries to help her commit murder to earn her forgiveness… and that’s not exactly pretty. I know there’s a lot of interpretations from Zutara shippers for this situation, most of them say that Zuko allows Katara to make her own decisions and won’t impose his ideas on her… but he was a-okay with the idea of her killing someone if it meant she’d like him a little better. And that’s not very nice (yes, Yon Rha was human garbage but that’s not the point: point is redeemed Zuko shouldn’t be so comfortable with the idea of murder, should he?). 

Basically, for Zutara to work well and not be messy, Zuko’s moral compass needs a major upgrade and he needs to… not let her walk over him. And Katara would need to not latch onto every mistake Zuko makes because if she does this, oh boy, they’re just going to argue for hours on end…

Namely, I think the main problem I see is that they’re both so very emotionally oriented people that they’re likely to make mistakes and get a little too caught up with their feelings. Unless they get a lot more grounded in their older years, the emotional problems they have won’t help their relationship much and might hinder it instead.

My opinion regarding controversial Zutara matters: I don’t see how Bumi II could ever be a Zutara baby and tbh I don’t think wanting your ship to be canon should be that important, but that may just be me. Back when I first got here, nobody ever even suggested this theory. Zutara fans were much like myself, making their own stuff and fawning over their ship without bothering over what was canon anymore. Frankly, why would they need canon so much when their ship is literally the most popular one in the fandom? If I don’t need it and 85% of the fandom doesn’t even know my ship exists, why would they? They’re solid enough outside of canon. They should just write their fics and make their own Zutara babies. It’d be better than to turn a goofball like Bumi, who’s not a lot like either Zuko or Katara, into a Zutara baby. Right?

About the Zutara vs. Kataang controversy, as I said, I’m neutral to it. That being said, claiming Zutara was going to be canon all along and that Kataang was forced, damn near shoehorned… okay, I can see the argument for how they forced Kataang in how Aang’s crush is constantly established and reminded to the audience while Katara’s feelings for Aang aren’t revealed as blatantly, but precisely because you can see Aang has feelings for Katara, you KNOW, since day 1, that Kataang is a possibility too. Fact of the matter is, I think Bryke set up the show so that they could go in either direction, Zutara or Kataang, depending on what struck their fancy. I don’t think one was favored over the other at the early stages, especially not when Kataang are shown hugging frequently, or kissing, through the whole show. Zutara get less physical moments, they are very impactful of course, but it’s still less of them (no Katara kissing his cheek out of gratefulness, for instance). Weighing all the evidence, I come to the conclusion that they could indeed have taken the Zutara route if a few things were different, but I don’t think Zutara was the only way to go, and that they went Kataang as a last minute decision after suddenly scrapping an idea for ATLA book 4.

I also think Zuko and Katara’s friendship deserves more credit. Especially in the comics, where they seldom even speak to each other? I mean, ffs, why? Do Bryke and Yang think that if they were to exchange more than 2 dialogues their fans would claim they’re canon? Uh, just, no. Part of what sucks about Katara in the comics is that she’s left with nearly no important relationships other than with Aang and Sokka. She barely interacts with Zuko, doesn’t get a lot of time with Toph either, she’s usually just all over Aang or bickering with Sokka. Why? Why so afraid of writing Zuko and Katara as friends? Fact is, they were fine as friends in Book 3′s last leg. Katara’s goddamn sass came back briefly just because of him, after having gone missing somewhere back in Book 2. Why not make the most of it? Oh, well, I know why. We’re talking about Yang, after all.

Anyways… I think that sums it up? Also, I have no personal issues with anyone who ships Zutara, not on the basis of them shipping Zutara or anything else. I personally am no fan of either Zuko or Katara (which is probably why I am totally neutral to the ship), but I won’t condemn anyone who likes Zutara… my only problems are with them trying to claim Bumi as theirs when it’s so counterproductive to do so, and how aggressive they can get about how they should have been canon. There’s a huge armada of non-canon ships and I personally am a happy crew-member of one crack ship with very little odds for canon, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Shipping should be about loving dynamics and basking in the way two characters play off each other, not in who got to canon island (especially when, uh, all of Avatar’s canon ships have a fuckton of writing problems, like, sometimes I thank the universe for Sokkla being non-canon because I just know they wouldn’t have written them properly…?). So I say ignore anyone who tries to bash your ship for being non-canon, because really, people who think you should only ship canon need to start exercising their imagination a bit more.

RWBY V6 CH7 Review: The Grimm Reaper

(Note: This was orignally posted on my backup blog due to a series of events that was due to this blog being flagged and me unable to post until now. This is a repost from said blog.)

We are at the halfway point! Yay! God, it has been one Hell of a first half so far. Unlocked secrets, evil plotting, a wintry forest, and zombie Grimm. It has been a dark, tense, emotionally breaking journey so far and we’re only halfway through. I can only imagine what the rest of the volume is going to be like. But first, we have to get this chapter out of the way. So lets do this!

Overview

We begin in, of all places, the Haven Vault. I wonder if they ever got Vernal’s body out of there… anyways, Cinder has brought Neo there, having apparently explained to her the Maidens, Relics, and of Salem. IDK how much detail she went into, but hey it sounds like the basics were covered. The door to the dimension where the lamp was is now sealed off completely. Heck it’s not even a door anymore, just a giant stone wall. So why has Cinder told Neo all of this? Well Cinder has been forbidden form killing Ruby via Salem, which makes sense since she also forbade Tyrian form killing her back in V4. Why? No clue, but it’s probably bad. But while Cinder can’t kill our hooded heroine, Neo is under no such obligation. So if Neo helps Cinder get to Atlas so that she can reclaim the Relic and redeem herself to her mistress, then Neo can get her revenge for them both and it can be played off as an unfortunate accident. Neo seems to be on board with this plan as the two villainesses shake hands. This is not going to end well…

Speaking of not ending well, we suddenly cut to a foggy area where a woman in a blue cloak is waking along a rope-bridge. It reminds me of V1, CH8 tbh. This woman, clad in blue and wearing a skeleton mask, is the Grimm Reaper. Or, more relevant to us, a younger Maria Calavera. Yes my friends, we are in a flashback now. And it’s one Hell of an impressive one as Maria is faced with a giant Nevermore, leading to a badass fight sequence. We also get to see Maria’s weapons,  pair of sickles powered by Gravity Dust, allowing her to maneuver them at will. They are awesome! Its really hard to talk about a fight scene, but you know how the girls struggled against one Nevermore back in Volume 1? Maria handles it single-handed here, ending it via a blast of her Silver Eyes. It turns the Grimm to stone and it promptly shatters. This indicates that, when controlled, the Silver Eyes can merely petrify a Grimm and not outright obliterate it, which would explain how Ruby froze the Dragon back in V3, but didn’t kill it.

Maria may have killed the birdie, but she soon is faced with other problems. She gets ambushed by a group of bandits, who are led by a cocky Crocodile Faunus woman named Tock. She is based off the crocodile from Peter Pan, and man her design is freakin’ great. She’s a rather confident woman, already knowing who Maria is and bragging that these next sixty seconds will be the Grimm Reaper’s lasts. As she says this, she turns on a clock as her aura glows. It was revealed by one of the animators on Twitter that Tock’s Semblance is, for sixty seconds, she is completely invincible. This is demonstrated as the fight begins, the seconds ticking in the background, as while Maria can handle the other bandits, Tock gives her quite the challenge. Weapons break when they hit her and not even minor damage can be done. It’s pretty much regular aura, but multiplied by 100.

Maria gives it her all, even combining her weapons in a dual-wielding form. But Tock is able to bite it in half and knock the Grimm Reaper’s mask off. This leaves Maria’s Silver Eyes wide open, and Tock promptly slashes them. Maria is left blinded and outright screaming in pin as Tock’s Aura breaks, a consequence of using her Semblance. She mockingly offers Maria mercy since the whole reason that her ‘master’ wanted her dead was due to her eyes. I am going to assume that the 'master’ is Salem. Maria tosses one of her sickles at Tock and as the Faunus prepares for the killing blow, Maria uses the Gravity  Dust to force the one weapon into Tock’s back. This causes Tock to meet her final fate as she is pulled towards Maria, who proceeds to behead her as the flashback comes to an end.

In present day, the group is surprised by this new information. Qrow is especially stunned, having admired the Grimm Reaper and he even based his weapon off of hers. Everyone assumed that she had died at some point despite her being a legend, but she had never given away her name or shown her face. Qrow had aspired to be as good as the Grimm Reaper… to which Maria says that hes well on his way with how much of a disappointment he’s been so far. Ouch But… yeah after last chapter, Qrow had that blow coming. Maria goes on to explain how despite surgery giving hr back her vision, after the attack she chose to go into hiding and look after herself. Since a Huntress’ duty is to protect and serve others, she feels that she is a failure and not someone that another should aspire to be like. She even points out how some are already stronger than she was, looking at Yang as she does so. But the former Huntress feels guilty for hiding away, unable to help make the world a better place for the next generation.

Ruby, however, points out that Maria CAN still help make things better now. How? She can train Ruby to use the Silver Eyes. That way, Ruby can use the power to help in the fight and therefore help others the way that Maria once aspired to. Maria doesn’t give an answer to if she’ll accept this offer, but it does look like she’s considering the younger girl’s words. But that will have to wait another day as Ruby’s Scroll goes off… an to her shock, it’s Vomit Bo.. ugh, I mean Jaune! This can only mean one thing. Yes my friends, after a train crash, a demoralizing revelation, an abandoned farm, and literally losing their wills to live, our heroes have arrived at Argus safe and sound. Once in the city, they are found by JNR, with Nora giving poor Oscar a glomp for good measure. There are hugs all around, the most emotional being between Jaune and Ruby. Jaune is clearly emotional that his friends made it back safely as Ruby assures him that she had promised, and she kept it. It’s such a beautiful moment signifying that, at least, our heroes are safe and together again. After these past few chapters, it is a VERY welcome sight.

Argus itself seems to be based off San Francisco, and it looks gorgeous. The settings are beautiful, the people are actually animated and not a still frame like with Mistral, and it really feels like a major city. It’s explained that Argus, being the man trading port between Mistral and Atlas, had help from Atlas to settle a firm establishment. SO while Atlas DOES maintain a military presence until recently, the city falls under Mistral domain and is one of the largest locations outside the main kingdom. And now that everyone’s together, there is the matter of living arrangements. As it turns out, Jaune already has this covered as we soon see a young blonde haired, blue eyed woman. This is Saphron Cotta-Arc. That’s right folks, this is one of Jaune’s long-awaited sisters. I believe that Ruby’s reaction speaks for all of us XD

When at the house, Saphron explains that she moved out of the Arc household as soon as she could as she teases her baby brother. It leads to some cute, funny banter as Jaune insists that he’s not a baby, but there IS an actual baby. Saphron’s infant son, Adrian, who pouts at his uncle’s implication. Which… OMG Jaune is an uncle… JAUNE IS AN UNCLE!!! Also Adrian is an absolute cutie patootie and I will let Weiss and Yang’s reactions speak for me. But yeah, it turns out that Jaune was inspired by Saphron setting out on her own to do the same, which she has no problems rubbing in his face. It leads to more cute banter before they are interrupted by the arrival of a young woman named Terra. And she is Saphron’s wife. Yes my friends, you read that right. Wife. IDK if they’re both lesbian or one or both is bi or whatever, but yes my friends, we have a married LGBT couple in the show at long last! I’ll go more into this in the review portion, bUT OMG YES! SO MUCH YES!!!

The lovebirds are more than happy with housing the group due to how Huntsmen and Huntresses give so much to protect people like them that they feel that it’s the least that they can do. Terra does question the use of students though, which Qrow does a.. meh job at passing off. But it’s okay, they have sandwiches! During this, Terra has to answer a call as Saphron explains that Terra works as a technician at the main radar tower. But it’s also where the military’s systems are housed, so things are buggy and poor Terra is getting the blame. Welt hat sucks. Int he meantime, the gang pan their next move. They intend to go to the military the next day and discuss getting transport to Atlas. But… well Jaune explains that they already tried… and the episode ends with the military base doors closing right into Team RWBYs faces. And no one was surprised.

Review

Guys… I can’t believe. We actually got a happy episode! Nothing bad, at least outside the flashback, happened whatsoever! The characters were… happy and laughing and cooing at cute babies! MILES AND KERRY HAVE FINALLY GRANTED US MERCY! HALELLUJAH!!!

Okay in all seriousness, this episode was great. We were in desperate need for a breather episode, and Thank God we got one. It feels kinda like Chapter 7 form last volume when RWY and JNR were catching up. But I feel like this one did a much better job since it both had some nice action, buildup for what’s coming next, and the build-up to this felt much more natural. But yeah… God IDK where to start with this one…

As I said, Argus looks absolutely stunning. It is probably the best-designed location in the series so far. And this time it felt alive and animated, unlike with Mistral where it used stills and then we spent mos to four time in a house. We actually got to explore a little bit this time, and it made the city feel all the more like… well, a city, as a result. The San Francisco vibes with the tram car and the theater were also super well done and made the city feel unique compared to previous settings. Major kudos to the art and compositing team here, they nailed it.

This was an excellent follow-up to the Brunswick Farms storyline. We get to see what Cinder is up to and set up for her and Neo’s next move. Enough to remind us that something is coming our heroes way, but it doesn’t drag or feel forced in. It presented us what we needed to know and look forward to their next move. On the good guys side, after all the Hell that they went through these past six volumes, they FINALLY got to catch a break. They made it to Argus safely, their moods have greatly improved, and they are once more focused on the task at hand. Hard to say if they feel any better about Ozpin yet, and considering we still haven’t seen Jaune man-handle Oscar, I assume that it’s gonna come up soon. But for right now, it’s just good to see our heroes happy and laughing again. Heck I got close to chocking up when Jaune and Ruby hugged and just seeing the pure relief on the paladin’s face. He’s earned it. They all have more than earned it.

The flashback, and in turn the deeper insight into Maria’s character, were also absolutely fantastic. Maria was a pure badass in her younger days and, while I wish that there was more foreshadowing (like mentioning the Grimm Reaper in passing or something), I absolutely can see why she was a legend. Once more CRWBY shows us a fast-paced, badass fight sequence and they all look so good. They’ve been striving much harder with the fights, which makes sense since it was one of the biggest complaints about V5, and it is very much appreciated. They are doing Monty proud. And Tock is such a fun one-time antagonist. Wicked design, awesome Semblance, a cocky but fun personality, her screentime was short but she made sure to own every second of it. And gotta say this, she had one Hell of a death scene!

It also served to help make Maria feel all that well-rounded of a character. I’ve loved her since the moment that she first introduced herself, and I’ve been loving her more and more with each new chapter. She’s sassy and independent, but wise and considering she stowed away on the train as all the chaos was brewing, has a noble spirit. And when you think about it, her stowing away makes sense. She feels guilty for hiding away after losing her eyes and being unable to move forward after it. She doesn’t come off as a weakling or a coward, she comes off as a sympathetic old woman who knows that she’s made missteps, and feels guilty because she failed to do her part to make things better. Hopefully she will agree to train Ruby and be the guiding light that the girl needs to master her powers and continue to help make people’s lives better. But yeah, so far Maria is the best new character in the show, and this episode truly solidified that.

But speaking of new characters, let us talk about the Cotta-Arc’s. First, I love Saphron. She’s bubbly, energetic, and super charming. The way that she teases Jaune is so silly, but you can tell that she loves her little brother and how affectionate she is. Getting to meet one of Jaune’s sisters at long last was a real treat and her and Jaune’s interactions were a major highlight for me. As for Terra, she also seems like a friendly lady, more than happy to house Huntsmen for all the good that they do for others. And Adrian I a total cutie and I still can’t believe that Jaune is a freakin uncle. I love it so much!

But of course, let us talk about the importance of these characters. They r 4our first LGBT couple in the series. We have Ilia, who I adore and she was a good first step, but now we have an actual married couple in the series. This is EXACTLY how you do representation. RT’s had a couple of examples of LGBT at this point (The Millers in Camp Camp, Agent Ohio (lesbian) and Sister (bi) in RvB, Skout in Nomad, Grimmons (RvB) in my own dreamworld) and so far they’ve done a good job. But aside form The Millers, this is the first blatant married couple that they’ve put into the show. And it was done beautifully. Saphron and Terra are portrayed as friendly young women with no stereotypes or cliches attached. They come across as regular people who are in love and just happen to both be women. Terra calls Saphron 'hon’, Saph goes to help her with groceries, they hold hands while sitting together, Saph is understanding when Terra has to answer a work call, it’s super sweet and, well… normal. And no one questions it or even addresses it when Terra comes in. They’re treated like any other couple, ad THIS is how you do proper representation. You portray your characters as people first and foremost, and then just let them be a couple. There’s no need to make a big deal out of it or put it under a spotlight. Let it be normal. Let it not be questioned. It is a VERY positive portrayal of LGBT characters and it made me cry in happiness when I watched it the first time. Thank you CRWBY. Thank you so much for this.

Final Thoughts

What more can I say? This episode was fantastic! A new setting, enjoyable new characters, a badass fight sequence, and plenty of build-up for what’s to come. But most of all, it was a positive episode. The characters got to be happy, and as such I was happy. Of course it makes me worry for what evil Miles and Kerry are going to unleash next, but hey at least they know when to finally let us breathe. This episode was very much welcomed, and I loved every second of it! Th first half of V6 has been a lot of things, but the one thing that it hasn’t been is disappointing. I eagerly await the second half for what is currently a strong contender for the best volume since V3! Great job CRWBY!
