The tragedy of the void fish
You're young when you hear all the adults talking about how there's something coming to hurt you
You receive this ok duck but it yours and you love it and it a good duck
One night you see the artist of the duck wandering around your cave so you show him in and he gets you more ducks when he comes back
Then the sky goes black and he's waking you from your sleep and taking you towards the Choas but promises to protect your family then you get put on a silver boat that takes off and you're being watched so closely as they fly away from the storm
And for 53 year these two take care of you then you're fed tales of the adventures they went on and the man is gone for 10 years
The woman takes your baby
then you see him again but he can't see you until he drinks but even then he doesn't recognize you
You try communicating with him but he doesn't get it even when you show him the day he saved you he can't get it
But he knows about your baby and maybe that's enough
Then he's back but different and you see the person whos been caring for you killed by the darkness
Then everything goes to hell

Got to the Sanctuary Islands in the SKY Children of Light game and like they have the opposite of the The Adventure Zone void fish. You even get the Jellyfish call.
All I could think of is the description in TAZ where the Voidfish is describing it’s past (I think? It’s been a while since I listen to TAZ) and it talks about being with its family in a water cave WHICH IS WHAT HAPPENS IN SKY
but the jellyfish are more light jellyfish rather than voidfish
So TAZ and Sky have the two sides of fantasy jellyfish spectrum lol

Just thinking how much it would suck for Lucretia when she was making the Bureau of Balance all static, if the Void Fish decided that that shit was cool and that everyone ought to know about it and just broad casted it all across the universe

Not to be in my Taz Balance feels but..
Sometimes Taako, before Accident during his show, would totally zone out while cooking and ends up preparing the table for seven people, but he doesn't remember why,,,, sometimes he'd encounter a new animal or a beautiful plant and muse about how they would have loved this,, but who were they??
Sometimes Merle would get bored and start shuffling a deck of cards, only to split it and realizing that no one was coming to play, and what were even the rules for this game? (bc he and davenport would come up with new games, with wild rules just to fuck around with the rest of the crew) Merle once bought a beautiful pastel blue journal bc he thought that she (she? Which she?) would appreciate the craftsmanship,, he got really confused while wrapping it into a godawful wrapping paper,, who was he gonna give this? (later the journal would find its way to Lucretia, not without a crude joke about plants, a badly drawn dog and a motivational quote, she sobbed when she saw it, but only after sending the three to their next mission)
Magnus always carved ducks, he didn't know why or how he learned he just knew how to. Sometimes he would finish a particularly good duck and smile, then he'd stand up, Intending to give it to... To whom? Nobody really wanted the ducks, except for kids usually. Sometimes he would wonder the forest, looking for some good wood, when he'd suddenly think, I need to go back I was supposed to stay on the.. On the what? No wait that doesn't make sense, he's not supposed to be anywhere and no one is gonna be annoyed bc he forgot he it was his turn to wait... To wait for what though? sometimes he read a book and called out for an explanation but the man? Person? Didn't answer and Mangus who did you call out for? You're alone (months, years later he'd pick up a book from his friends Taakos collection and get an explanation,, but the feeling of rightness but not quite, expecting someone warmer and someone more patient to explain it to him,, it didn't help when Taakos first instinct was to say "don't ask me idiot do I look like a nerd ask,.." and then he stopped only to shake his head bc who else could Magnus ask if he was the only wizard here)
The trio doesn't know why or how but finally, when they met, finally someone understood that the days were somehow not hot enough, that they were always just a bit too chilly

Welcome TAZ tumblr we’ve got our first snibbet at one of The Suffering Game’s panels.
Now - the blur is to avoid spoilers but I’m like 90% sure I know what this is.
Spoilers ahead:
It’s Magnus’s body.
Specifically Magnus’s cloned body.
Notice the background now Taako is setted in the Fantasy Costco — and also notice how he is looking down at what we can only assume is the pod itself or Magnus’s nude body itself. Hence his surprise either way.
This would mean that we are maybe getting a glimpse of the lunar interlude right after the Suffering game,
Which means we would probably be getting the red robe reveal and possibly had the second void fish reveal as well all in one book. Maybe the next book just entirely all the cycles of the stolen century.
But again this is 100% just a theory.
a game theory —

taz graphic novel thoughts… I’m putting it under the cut because… spoilers silly.
Forewarning this really got away from me and is unfortunately pretty negative. read at your own risk
Huh, this really is an adaption? After the eleventh hour this is a really big let down tbh. Just so much was cut and it felt SO rushed. In the first 3 scenes we lose taako’s “because I’m afraid no one else will have me” and practically ALL of Magnus and the void fish swimming.
Obviously things need to be cut, it’s a completely different medium, but all the emotional payoff was ruined. I was never scared they were going to lose something great, I didn’t even cheer for them when they killed Edward. All the sacrifices are so minimized FOR GOD SAKES MAGNUS AND GOVERNOR KALIN WAS CUT. Are you kidding me? One of the most important sacrifices and emotional moments of TAZ.
With every cut there is a cut to later payoff, in the eleventh hour that was balanced well but here it just doesn't work. So much is cut out of tsg that as a reader there were no stakes to win or lose. I knew they would win because its their story but i didn't care what would happen to them.
So Wonderland was too short, why do I care? because the very heart of the suffering game was lost.
This is the thesis of the suffering game summed up best.
Tumblr media
What did they learn in wonderland? How did they change? They don't really. Taako doesn't choose the mission over himself, Magnus doesn't give up his main purpose in life, Merle doesnt lose his faith.
We don't get to see them at their worst because there is no one in Wonderland who their actions effect. I always, ALWAYS tear up at Rowen's "why?" after they go through their round with the monster factory. This catalyses Taako into later choosing to sacrifice his beauty. With the stakes cut we lose the emotional payoff of later scenes.
The solution of the suffering game being too long was not to cut out all of the spinning. It needed a restructuring. Heart attack has every interesting character moment cut, its barely a drive by of the original scene, why not just cut the moment entirely? It doesn't say anything about the character's emotional insights and True sight could have easily been cast at another moment.
Some moments have been adapted beautifully but they ended up reminding me what is lacking. Arms outstretched has great pacing that I had come to expect from the team. But compare that to Magnus's sacrifice and its just... nonexistant.
There was a way to trim down suffering game to fit it and the reunion tour that didn't require cutting every interesting sacrifice.
Now the reunion tour... what a mess. they cut out our narrator to show our plane being cut off, but this section dearly needed some narrative guiding. So much running back and forth in time and locations to make it run smoother but again, they needed a whole restructuring. Which some parts got but for all the wrong reasons.
I was happy that they cut the whole act with Magnus being dead when they get back to the campus because it barely works in audio form. But instead the campus is cleared because of the storm but then its packed for one panel when Carey and Killian cancel their side mission? why have the side mission at all? I'm assuming to drive Carey's and Magnus's friendship but it is a really clunky addition.
Everyone drinking the voidfish ichor separately is visually and narratively frustrating. It happens on a smaller scale in the show but by this point griffin has taken the reins back of the narrative and guides us through it seamlessly.
Griffin's final narration, has been separated and mutilated for what? it barely exists at all. its been replaced with an odd speech from Lucretia being happy about their return.
Its such a confusing moment to end on when you could have had idk THE ORIGINAL BELOVED ENDING?
"And from those pillars, the Hunger’s armies have begun to manifest, marching outward to raze the world below. It’s the end of the world. Again."
Tldr: bruh just read it, but seriously idk the changes made are clunky and dont make sense. and all the moments that are cut ruin the pacing of the rest of the book. It's especially confusing as this is probably one of the most straightforward arcs since petals to the metal and it is the most confusing adaption.

Something that really only occurred to me near the end of the TAZ: Balance arc -- when Magnus gets stuck in the mannequin body, and it's up to Taako and Merle to take the lead at the BOB while Magnus pretends to be dead -- is that Magnus often takes over the leadership role. Not that the others defer to him, or that he orders them around, or that they never take the initiative, or that Magnus is always responsible. But in that Magnus pushes the story a little more (like sneaking in to the see the void fish), he often takes the lead in conversations (like the conversations with Lucas, or when Lucretia asks why they didn't tell her they saw a redcloak, or when they're explaining the situation to Roswell in the time loop, etc.), and, well, he rushes in.
And it worked pretty well from a character perspective. Taako, in Griffin's words, is aloof, and Merle was a little too apathetic (and also Clint wasn't very good at DnD in Balance). Magnus being a fighter means he can take more responsibility for the others' safety, like dropping through two stories of glass to kill an ogre because he feels bad Taako and Merle were electrocuted when the robot got past him.
The next arc, Amnesty, is a bit of an odd one out, since it doesn't really have the space for that same leader-type role. The three of them are split off on their own missions most of the time, so they all have to take point more. It also helps that the three balance out well when they're together -- Aubrey is fiery (heh) and outspoken, but the youngest and a newcomer to town; Duck is the powerhouse that doesn't actually want the power or responsibility; and Ned is the eldest but kind of a coward, at least at the beginning (and Thacker has too few episodes).
Then in Graduation, Travis and Griffin swap DM/leader roles. Pretty self-explanatory as Fitzroy is straight up assigned-leader-by-narrative -- again, not in a way where he orders around the others as if they really are just henchmen, or that Argo and the Firbolg do nothing on their own. But just that Fitzroy takes point every now and again and takes more responsibility for protecting his friends, like Magnus.
Overall, the character's roles seem to drive from a player perspective. Justin seems to prefer witty, fun characters rather then those ones that take point (and often ones with, uh, a unique character voice). Clint overall seems to prefer supporting classes and characters. Travis' characters, and Griffin's one so far, tend to be more be more outspoken and ready to take charge

Void fish stim, from The Adventure Zone: Balance?
With jelly fish, glitter, sheet music. A sort of dark academia or beautifully sinister aesthetic? No slimes

Haven't gotten around to listening to/reading TAZ myself, but one of my partners loves it and I've gotta admit the Voidfish fucks incredibly hard as a concept. I hope this board is alright! c:

I listened to more Taz at work last night and I'm nearing the end I think. I'm glad lucretia is still technically a friend she just made a bad decision in erasing her friends' memories. Also I have a theory that is probably wrong about what The Hunger is, but I think it's a particularly giant void fish. Like it's described so similarly, with the flashing lights and the tentacles. Its just so big that instead of eating just information, it literally eats entire planes of existence to sustain itself. I hope I'm right because that's cool as fuck but I'm probably wrong
