Flying Hawaiian Garden Spider by Gavin Kingsley
The light striking this spider gives her a fantastic bejewelled appearance. She has built her web between bushes in a garden maze and she seemed to leap out at us as we navigated our way around. To both the naked eye and the camera she appears to hover suspended in the air.

J20170914-0094—Anise swallowtail (Papilio zelicaon) on Perideridia kelloggii—RPBG—DxO by John Rusk Via Flickr: Anise swallowtail (Papilio zelicaon) larva on Yampah (Perideridia kelloggii). This is the fifth instar of the larva. It will soon form a chrysalis, to emerge as a beautiful butterfly. This photo is proof , if proof be needed, that the swallowtail is not restricted to fennel (anise) but will select nearly any of the Apiaceae family as host, as well as several members of the citrus family. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.

J20170125-0030—Hippodamia convergens—RPBG by John Rusk Via Flickr: Hippodamia convergens—convergent lady beetle. Entomologists may prefer lady beetle to ladybug or ladybird but they are fighting a losing battle as long as the nursery rhyme is remembered. The Regional Parks Botanic Garden is as much a zoo as it is a plant sancturary. Birds, fish, lizards, newts, and, especially insects are to be found in every corner of the garden. These lady beetles are nesting in the California fescue at the spot where visitors enter the canyon path. There are thousands of them. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA

It is also listed by the State of California as Rare. The are fewer than 20 occurrences in the Santa Susana and Santa Monica Mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. The insect is a western cucumber beetle. Farmers can only wish that this beetle was rare for it is a major pest of agricultural crops (although not much of one in the Bot Garden.) Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
