On writing a complex chapter: WIP/Author Notes for Through the Shadows of Shame (TSS), an AUP Fanfic
Just wanted to share another behind the scenes author's note for Through the Shadows of Shame, an Academy's Undercover Professor Fanfic.
Thumbnail is tiny so no spoilers ;)
This is for an upcoming chapter and it's very loaded with a lot of things. To be honest, I had to think of this chapter for almost a week, writing new outlines, drafts, ideas, assessing where I should put the chapter, and all of that.
It was a very difficult chapter because of all the emotions and body language as well as the environment which is more dynamic int his chapter compared to the previous chapters I've written.
So I figured I'd try mapping it out! I think writers really have a tool like this? But I didn't really reference any of those a lot, I'm used to doing flowchart to make sense of my brain, therefore I just did what was natural.
This was so helpful for me. When I tried to input all of the needed elements at once as I was writing it, it just didn't feel right and I got stuck thinking of what was wrong with it, not to mention how overwhelming it felt.
I like to really get in my feelings when writing the scenes, trying to feel and imagine what the characters would be feeling.
And there were a lot of feelings in this chapter.
So what worked?
Doing it in layers was by far a big brain moment for me. Instead of doing the entire scene in one draft, I did it in 3-4 parts:
First, I would draft the entire narrative focusing on the movement and dynamics of the changing environment and other external (non ML/FL) objects/characters. This establishes a sort of skeleton or structure for the entire thing because it gives us the timelines for when certain things need to happen and if it made sense for it to happen at that point (e.g. in my first draft it was only supposed to be 4pm and then the next paragraph the sun was already setting -- it just didn't make sense)
Second, after the skeleton is done and the scene is basically painted in with words, I add in the POV of the characters, 1 character at a time. The scene is difficult because they're both just walking silence not talking to each other, but they're both lost in thought so I needed to convey not only an inner monologue, but also body language, all juxtaposed into the setting in #1.
Third, I look at the side-by-side character thoughts/actions as the sene is unfolding (if you can kinda see it, there's a timeline of major events in the scene, and I've color-coded the thoughts of Ludger and Erina (my OC) and what change is happening at that point in time This is also for continuity, logic, and parallelism. (e.g. what are they thinking of at the same time? That would affect their body language and therefore change the perception or assumption the other person has of their current state of mind)
Fourth is copy editing. Mostly for rewriting the flow, making sure it makes sense, making sure the ideas are good.
Fifth is line editing. Tightening up the dialogue, cutting unnecessary lines, paragraphs, writing additional text for smoother transitions, wittier banter, etc.
Sixth is re-reading! And not just once. I re-read it a few times after editing, then leave it alone on the next chapter. Then I read it again at least once before I publish it. Because of this reason when I'm writing something I'm usually (ideally) 2-3 chapters ahead of my published chapters.
Phew, that was a hefty chapter. Anyway, I just wanted to share my process. Since I write the whole day and I'm alone most of the time, I don't really have people to talk to about this so I thought I'd talk to the internet void.
If you're curious about my story it's this one, on AO3: Through the Shadows of Shame - an AUP Fanfic
Tags: Romance, Fantasy, Comedy, Slow-burn Pairing: Ludger Cherish x Female OC (Original Character) Female OC is a fellow professor and she's a researcher who specializes in plants. And also she banters with him a lot. I think their interactions are cute.

I can’t find the post, but someone suggested that Clerk Carmine is the fiddler who makes it out of the 12 firebombing and to 13 where he plays at Finnick and Annie’s wedding and if that’s confirmed somewhere, it just gives me ALL the emotions.
You mean to tell me that Clerk Carmine, who was just a kid when Lucy Gray got reaped, lives all the way up through every single one of these books and makes it to 13 where he presumably survives to see the sun stop rising on the reaping?
He lost his brother, Billy Taupe to Snow when Snow shoots him in TBOSAS. He lost Lucy Gray to Snow, (whether he killed her or is responsible for the mayor coming down on her for Mayfair’s death leading to her leaving 12– either way she had a grave in the Covey cemetary). He lost Maude Ivory (Clare) (presumably when she gave birth to Lenore Dove), and then raised Lenore Dove like his own child. Only, of course, for Snow to kill Lenore Dove too. Did Barb Azure make it out? Did Tam Amber? Or is he the last of the true Covey?
He’s also the first person to bring the katniss plants to Snow’s attention. This is one of the ONLY district characters that we have known all the way through the saga. There’s a good chance that he was alive for every single one of the hunger games, that he’s one of the only ones who knows the entire history of district 12 since the first war. And, in the end, he LIVES. He lives, and he’s still playing music and carrying on the legacy of the Covey into the new sunrise. And I think THAT is extremely significant.

ranking lucy gray's outfits in the tbosas movie as a costume design student ✶✧
quite possibly, everything rachel zegler wears is my favorite part of tbosas. trish summerville is a big personal hero of mine, and tbosas is my favorite hunger games film in terms of costume design!!! so as a disclaimer, i love every one of these looks with everything in me, this is just me ranking them.
8. swimsuit

this really shouldn't be in last place, because crochet swimwear? brilliant. and so beautiful. and so in-universe.
i love how all the covey swimwear feels like it was hand-made by the characters themselves. obviously, nobody in district 12 is swimming for pleasure much (we learn this from the first book, and haymitch and burdie just skinny dipped lol), so naturally the covey would have made their own things to wear by hand.
7. sejanus' execution

the details of the snakes on her belt and the hand stitching/embroidery on her sleeves are so wonderful. for an outfit that never really gets a full shot in the film (most of rachel's shots in this scene are closeups from the neck up), the dedication to detail is super admirable.
6. well i'm not made out of sugar

it's such a good detail how coriolanus' mother's shawl perfectly color compliments the rest of this outfit. it's like she picked it out to match on purpose, which makes the betrayal all the more devastating. i think this scene is also one of trish's stronger uses of color symbolism- the warm, sunshine-y colors of lucy gray contrasting the stark, bare palette of everything coriolanus wears in 12. she's a symbol of hope. he's trying to end that.
5. the covey lake

huge fan of the simplicity here. it's just a dress over the swimsuit. and yet everything about this screams lucy gray and screams covey. look at those mismatched little brass buttons!! the swimsuit peeking out from underneath!! the plum color suits rachel zegler so well- it's just generally so gorgeous.
4. pure as the driven snow

this outfit was one of the things about this movie that stuck in my head the most after walking out of the theater. there's this carefree, thrown-on essence to it, like the flowers in her hair are an afterthought, or maude ivory helped her put them in. i wish i could find better pictures of the vest, because the beading details are so beautiful. the reusing of her boots is a good detail too, because obviously she wouldn't have that many pairs of shoes.
3. the meadow

trish summerville did a great job at building a repeated silhouette for lucy gray. the cinched waist, blousy or sleeveless top, and a-line, flowing skirt is in almost every outfit, and i think this one is the most classic example of that look. i think she looks so beautiful in blue, and i like that she's dressed in such a wide variety of colors throughout the film- always something completely different than the last.
2. the rainbow dress

OBVIOUSLY. hand painted corset are you kidding me? i remember seeing this in the trailer and thinking truly, she could not have more perfectly recreated the dress from the book. it stays true to lucy gray's sillhouette, the ruffles feel bright enough to be a rainbow, but muted enough to still feel in-universe/accurate for 12. one of my favorite details is her boots ↓
they're old, and have a vintage feel, but something about how chunky they are also reminds us that despite the folksy charm, we are also in a dystopian future.
1. nothing you can take from me

my baby. my darling. possibly my favorite costume of any hunger games film. i am IN LOVE with this outfit.
the flower decal trimming and embroidery on her blouse, and the crushed navy velvet that feels like it was found at a 100 year old antique store. the boots are back. lacy top underneath, hand crocheted no doubt. purple in the skirt, but it's subtle- purple is her most repeated color element. it's rebellious, it's royal. the slight 1940s references in the silhouette.
DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE HAIR. ribbons and feathers threaded throughout her curls, giving her the impression of a bird in flight when she twirls??? REMIND YOU OF ANYTHING?????
this is her triumphant return moment, her defiant song against the oppression of the capitol. she's captivated the crowd....just like a certain someone will years and years later.
#sorry for yapping i just love these costumes so so so much#lucy gray baird#tbosas#sunrise on the reaping#thg#the hunger games#the covey#district 12#lenore dove#tam amber#clerk carmine#billy taupe#barb azure#maude ivory

The worst part about learning a new language is that I often make a choice to say things incorrectly *on purpose* in my native language.
However, when I use the correct words of my target language in the way that I use words, all of the lovely, kind people in my life are like. "Hey, you know that isn't what that means, right?"
And then I have to explain that I would very much like them to keep correcting me when I fuck shit up, but, in this specific instance, it was, in fact, a choice made to say the wrong thing on purpose.

Some of y'all are pissing me off. Covey names are two parts one based on a Ballad the other a color but they are still on name. Lucy Grey never goes by Lucy, she says to Lepidus Malmsey that Lucy is not her name, it's Lucy Grey. Lenore Dove isn't just Lenore she's Lenore DOVE. The only time anyone calls her Lenore is when Haymitch is trying to trick Snow. This goes for Tam Amber, Clerk Carmine, Maude Ivory, Bard Azure and Billy Taupe as well. If CORIOLANUS SNOW can say their names correctly So. Can. You.

Call me crazy, but I can't be the only one that thinks that the main reason that Clerk Carmine in Sunrise on the Reaping doesn't like Haymitch is that he reminds him too much of his dead brother Billy Taupe?? "The Abernathys were known rebels back in the day" and "He [Clerk Carmine] once told Lenore Dove that I was the kind that died young." Billy Taupe was running around with the District 12 rebels in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, some of which included members of the Chance family, like Arlo Chance who inspired the Hanging Tree song. While the Chance family are still going strong by Sunrise on the Reaping, maybe Clerk Carmine remembers his brother hanging out with some Abernathys back in the day. Also Billy Taupe doesn't get a headstone in the Covey graveyard but Clerk Carmine still taught Lenore Dove how to play Billy's old piano accordion... Much to think about.

Billy Taupe played the accordion… Lenore Dove plays the accordion… There’s little chance to get new instruments in 12. Clerk Carmine probably passed his dead brother’s instrument down to his niece

Celebrating 1.5k hits: Through the Shadows of Shame
I finally hit 1.5k hits on my story!
This may be tiny compared to some, but honestly? I'm overjoyed that my work has been viewed at least 1.5k times. (Well, 1.6k as of finishing this draft)
Woohoo! When I first set out to write this story, I told myself I'd do it for me. I'm still writing for myself, but it's nice to know other people are actually reading the words?
Like wow. Thank you.
I also hit a milestone on the story outline (that I call my roadmap)!
Part 1 (out of who knows) is complete! I would say a part is every time something significant happens in the story.
In the image attached, Part 1 is the one in the red square to the left. We've officially published 17 Chapters! ✨🥳
17 down, and so, so many to go 🤪
Right now, I think I have 5-7 parts in total?
I've plotted out 80 chapters but honestly that's subject to change. Sometimes I consolidate chapters, sometimes I need to add a chapter to flesh out the story more, but one thing's for sure:
I'm having so much fun~
*bow*
