@pear1ridged, graham: [FIGHT] for receiving muse to not recognize sender or medical staff trying to help them, due to being drugged or otherwise disoriented – so they fight
HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW LONG IT'S BEEN. how long he's been trapped down there, beaten and tortured and mutilated. no windows, no visible passage of time other than the state of his own injuries. locked away until bradley decides that it's time to fuck with him some more. things only got worse when the twins got dragged into it, forced to watch the horrors unfold in front of him, forced to know that to some extent it was his fault that they were down there. it's been a while now, he's sure of that much. the twins came, his fingers got cut off... he doesn't remember much after that, but he knows it must have been a while. it feels like he's heard caspian screaming and crying for days, the sound of casper trying to break out of his room hard to miss. there is some sense of relief in that bradley had mostly stayed away from him since the twins came in, far more focused on fucking with his new victims, but that didn't mean tate was left ALONE. bradley's buddies had kept an eye on him, had inflicted violence as they deemed necessary. the goal was to break tatum as much as possible, stop him from causing any trouble. it seems that they'd succeeded in that much.
the door opens, the figure tate can only just make out through blurred vision is certainly not bradley's. it's not one he's familiar with at all, hasn't seen it before. he can't make out details, all he sees is someone new - someone rushing towards him. panic ensues, terror overwhelming as he faces the reality that he just can't take any more of this. it's one last effort, one last hope. if he can't overpower the man and get away, maybe, just maybe, this will be the final straw and they'll just kill him. it'd get him to shut up for good, it'd stop all of the pain. with a grunt he rushes forward, attempts a tackle. he's not exactly strong like this, plenty of injuries still bleeding. he barely makes the man stumble, definitely isn't getting out by going around him. definitely isn't winning a fight either. he's not stable on his feet, stumbling with every move he makes. he's pretty sure there's something very wrong with his leg, but it's not his top priority right now. he takes a swing, but he completely misses. he doesn't exactly process that the blurred vision makes it harder, brain so focused on trying to fight that he isn't stopping to consider his own abilities. he can hear someone saying his name, he can hear the echoed sounds of caspian crying. everything feels so far away. another attempted swing misses, this time throwing tate off balance and he crashes to the floor hard. at that point instinct kicks in, body curling into a ball, blood soaked hand cradled close to his chest.

Least favourite elvis characters
Good question anon.
Since I haven't fully analyzed all of his movies yet, I'm just gonna the characters from favorite to least favorite for movies I did review.
1: Jodie Tatum
I'm sure some of you are as shocked as I am that this almost universally panned film gave me the best Elvis character so far. Jodie when you really look at his character is the perfect main character to have in an Elvis movie. As much as I typically despise the cocky, womanizing jock type character, Jodie managed to have all of those character traits and not be annoying. Just by looking at his scenes alone you can write a completely new movie where he's the main character and you would have a significantly better movie. Everything you need to write a movie about a young man learning to become humble and set aside his differences with someone he doesn't stand for the purpose of achieving a common goal of uniting two worlds through marriage is right there. Saying that a side character genuinely deserves their own movie more than the actual main character is the ultimate compliment.
2: Deke Rivers
It was so hard to pick between my number 1 and number 2. As much as I love Deke as a character, unless you want to write about him before the events of the movie or expand on what happened during the movie, Deke doesn't have that much potential for a story. His character arc is complete and he went through the most change out of any Elvis character. There just isn't really that much left to his story where you go "I want to see a sequel and see what happens next."
3: Scott Heyward
This is the best character writing out of all of the cheap to make era Elvis films so far. Scott has actual depth by not wanting to use nepotism to get everything he wants in life. Scott acknowledges that he's in fact privileged but doesn't use that as an excuse to lord over the lower classes. As much as he admittedly doesn't understand having to make a dollar stretch and wanting to have a comfortable lifestyle, he doesn't shame Dianne for doing what she does. The only thing keeping him from being #1 is that it seems out of character for him to want to be with Dianne on a romantic level since she's actively doing the one thing he wanted to get away from. Unless we have a character arc explaining what changed, it just doesn't make sense.
4: Walter Gulick
I admit that Walter doesn't have much of a character arc. But that doesn't matter to me, because the appeal of his character is his relationships with others. He's in the cynical world of boxing, but still has a wholesome outlook on life. Watching him interact with the done with life New Yorkers is incredible. Even though he knows they look at him strangely, he still has a high level of respect for not only the men but also women. It's honestly incredible that Walter isn't once tempted to be with anyone but Rose. Just a wholesome character with a good moral code and shows that not every character needs to have a significant flaw to be interesting.
5: Vince Everett
As much as I find him unlikeable, I think his character has a lot of fanfic potential. Seeing this otherwise everyday man's fall from grace, become one of the hottest artists in America then suffer a possibly career ending, life-threatening injury is such a wild ride. You can easily write introspective stories on why he became a jerk, how he felt when he though he lost everything, and see if his relationship with Peggy will work out.
6: Rusty Wells
Definitely a dark horse of an Elvis character. I wasn't expecting to like him as much as I did. In the first half I thought he was just going to be somewhat of a Tulsa. But once he got in a bar fight with drunken frat boys just to keep Valerie out of trouble, he immediately became way more interesting. The face he makes when one of his band mates ask him about Valerie is so telling. He genuinely cares about Valerie's well-being. And watching the process of seeing this flirtatious man genuinely fall in love and want to stay in a committed relationship is a pretty good character arc for a cheap to make beach film.
7: Clint Reno
I would've been perfectly fine with his character but the last 20 minutes of the movie or so has him go completely off the rails. Him losing his mind about Cathy potentially cheating on him can work as long as it's written well. Given his perceived age there's plenty of ways you can write this concept that shows a different side of Clint without making him completely switch to the "villains" side.
8: Charlie Rogers
Had all the potential of being a great character yet the writers completely dog on him. As much as he has flaws, I genuinely couldn't care because everyone else in his movie were much, much worse. Him wanting to go back to the carnival makes no sense because of how terrible he was treated. I think if done well he can be an interesting character.
9: Glenn Tyler
As much as I like the backstory and think he has the potential of being an amazing character, I don't think his story was handled well. Some of the decisions that he made don't feel like they fit with his character. He doesn't really love a lot of room to write introspective stories since we already have a full idea of why he's the way he is.
10: Mike Edwards
I really like his dynamic with Sue-Lin. It adds a level of depth that makes an otherwise generic nice guy interesting. Even though he doesn't have a character arc, the conflict that he's put in is so engaging. This conflict doesn't end with him learning a lesson, but it allows him to show a different skillset that otherwise wouldn't exist. I still believe that his romance plot with Nurse Warren wasn't necessary but at least it still shows how not everyone who goes through an unexpected conflict end up having a complete transformation.
11: Tulsa McLean
Tulsa is just a generic main character. He does have some comedic moments where he's sassy with his superior officer and "Tiger". Him being of Native American descent and having a lot of experience with women doesn't really add anything to his character. At least he does have a specific goal and the romance he has with Lili gives him an interesting conflict.
12: Rick Richards
I just don't think he's a memorable character. The conflict he faces is a result of his own actions but it really doesn't matter because he doesn't learn anything. His romance is so much of an afterthought that they don't even kiss until the very end. We get more of a focus on the people he used to be with than focusing on him overcoming that past. You get more invested in the Hawaiian background and the Polynesian Culture Center than you do with him.
13: Josh Morgan
The most boring Elvis character. His only goal isn't even his own: it's the Air Force who wanted him to go to the mountain. We don't learn anything about him outside of his distant relation to the Tatum family. His romance with Azalea doesn't give us any interesting dynamics and just feels pointless. He is a completely nothing character to the point where he shouldn't even be a main character.

Representation at Pixelberry: The Follow-Up
One year ago, on June 15, 2020, Pixelberry released a statement regarding representation at the company. Here is the LINK to the original blog post, and here was MY RESPONSE. Oh, how naïve and optimistic I was. It contained a list of goals and promises they hoped to accomplish within a year. Well, a year has passed, and here is my attempt to hold PB accountable. I'll be going over the five main points of their representation plan and if they achieved what they promised. All criticisms are about content released after June 15th. Long post beware, but I'm not putting it under a read more because I feel like it's important for all to see.
1. Commitment to diversity of Love Interests - FAIL
We’ve already been moving towards having Love Interests have customizable skin tones. We will continue to do this with some stories, while also having some characters with clear ethnic identities. At the same time when we have multiple love interests of different ethnicities, we are aiming for those Love Interests to have equal game time.
"LIs with customizable skin tones" mean they come in three flavours: white, black, and ambiguously Asian/Latinx interchangeably. So far I have rarely seen an LI as connected to their culture/ethnicity as Rafael Aveiro, and he just talked about his Vovo's food if he ever were on screen. They had many chances with the other OH LIs as well. Even Ayna Seth and Tatum Mendoza were confirmed to be Indian and Filipino, respectively, though FA gets a little leeway, as it was set in a fictional west-European continent.
As for equal game time? I'm sure the biggest example we can all think of was the mess that was Open Heart 3, which was written during the hiatus (which only existed because they were going to straight up kill Rafael in Book 2). Game time was not equal among LIs, and the white male LI was heavily favoured. PB also continues to pay female LIs dirt by giving them no screen time. In addition to that, LGBT+ players, who are consistently underrepresented, receive one (1) unprepared pride month survey, prpbably only because someone asked them about it on Twitter.
This is the meat and potatoes of everything because it's what they're outputting to their audience. It's what the people see. Given that things haven't been going so well lately in this department, consider this promise a big fat fail.
2. More authentic and diverse hairstyles for people of color - QUESTIONABLE
Our team will focus on providing more authentic and representative hairstyles. We are prioritizing these hairstyles outside of our normal book processes and will introduce them in new books as they are ready.
While, yes, they have added two new hairstyles in WEH, they also just took Jade Bonet's hair and recycled it for LoA F!MC. PB recycles all their hair more often than not.
3. More diverse book covers - QUESTIONABLE
This is an initiative we started in January of this year. As a result the number of Black, Latinx, Asian, Native American, Pacific Islander, mixed, and other characters on new book covers increased from 35% of characters in 2019 to 60% characters in the first half of 2020. However, the number of black characters is still not high enough this year. More are already scheduled for books later this year. We will make sure that Black characters are well represented on our covers in the future.
"Diverse" does not just mean by race, but also gender, sexual orientation, etc. FA has the only recent MLM cover. And don't tell me that the FA and LoA covers are any different from each other. The only black characters on covers are Zoey Wade (QB), and Black!Gabe Ricci (LoA) and Bastien (WB), which aren't even their canon races unless you choose them to be. This is the case for many single-LI books, such as Cassian Keane (W:ABR, which technically premiered on Mar. 16, but the sentiment is the same), Sam Dalton (TNA), and Dakota Winchester (WEH). Not to mention the customizable/multi LI books like DS, RT, BaBu2, MTFL, etc. Majority of these covers are just cishet couples delicately cradling each other's bodies or whatever. And we're not even gonna get into how PB literally put the Open Heart LIs in order of their favouritism on Book 3's cover.
4. Writers/Staff - QUESTIONABLE
We will be engaging in professional training on historical and current racism for our writers to ensure more of them have a better understanding and more context for views of diverse characters in Choices. We will also create a program that gives more authority to people of color in the studio to advise writers and artists on more authentic portrayals in both writing and art of black, brown, and minority characters.
A story with a Black-led cast is something I have asked for in the past, but failed to follow-up on. We will very likely start this with a Black-led cast story led by Chelsa, one of Pixelberry's Black writers.
We will increase the number of diverse writers we source for new stories, starting with hiring more Black and Latinx writers to lead the charge.
For all teams at Pixelberry we will actively work to bring in more Black and Latinx candidates with the goal to increase the number of Black and Latinx employees at Pixelberry. Although Pixelberry is over 50% female, on teams where females are not at 50% we will actively work to source more female candidates.
This promise seemed like a copout from the start because we have no way of knowing who works on what at PB unless we very meticulously stalk their LinkedIn or Twitter or whatever. We have no solid statistics except for what they feed us. I do know, however, that they recently let the Ms. Match writers go and were hiring for external writers, but there really is no way of knowing what's going on behind-the-scenes with their 112+ employees, and of course there would be NDAs involved. We are yet to see a book with an all-Black cast, and receive rare development updates with new books. Actually, I think a really good way to promote diversity is to do staff showcases on their social media. Just a way to show the public who's responsible for what. Writers, game devs, the art team, etc. Don't think it'll happen, but it's always a good idea.
5. Donations - QUESTIONABLE
Pixelberry will also be making $100,000 in donations to Black Girls Code, the Black Writers Collective, and the Latinx Writers Collective at Techqueria. Rather than as a lump sum, we will be making these donations over the course of a year to remind us that we are not making short term changes, but are committed to long term sustainable actions. We’ll also be donating up to an additional $100k from profits for this week, 6/15-6/21.
There has been no proof, no receipts, no evidence from PB that they have donated anything to anyone, and as far as we're concerned, their word doesn't mean anything. No news or updates news about it. I would love to believe that they did something, but as you can see, I've become quite the pessimist. BWC still uses PB's old logo (like, pre-Choices) on their sponsors page, and the last interaction they've had with BGC was in 2013. They don't even follow each other on Instagram. In fact, BGC received a huge donation from MacKenzie Scott, formerly Bezos last July. Yes, that billionaire Bezos, and that got coverage from them. Obviously donations don't need to be for publicity, but in this case I think it's important there should be proof. Again, it's really hard to tell with these behind-the-scenes things, but given how PB loves to gloat and hates to keep promises, we can assume that none of this happened.
~~~
So, what's the takeaway? That PB's fallen down the drainhole of shitty content and empty promises and has no intention of climbing out as long as they still make that bank? Seems counterproductive, because good representation gets good feedback and income. They pump out bad books with barebones "representation" if you can call it that, then drop their precious merch and pretend all is fine and dandy. But just as I suspected one year ago, none of this matters, because people forget things, and people move on, and shit gets swept under rugs. Yet, here I am, yelling at a company in a post I for sure doubt they'll see. Because if not me, then who?
@playchoices Your move. It's been your move for a year now. When will you actually make it?
Arty Art Things ✨
Hellooo!
I've decided to post some of the arty things I've done either recently or in the last few years, well the pieces I'm somewhat proud of at least. All my posts tend to be a lot more wordy than they need to be but hey it's what I do here!
Conchúr White
Anyone one who's been on this blog for a bit will have probably have seen me talk about this lovely Irish fella. The pencil drawing is actually a year old as of yesterday, I only know that because screenshots of me flipping out about Conchúr following me on twitter popped up in my memories yesterday. I think I'd sent it to him at about 3 in the morning (I was not in a good head space at that point in time), so probably not what he was expecting to see when he opened his phone in the morning aha
The biro version is much more recent: I got bored while sat at my desk and doing research about university courses, saw a biro, saw my old drawing of Conchúr, had an idea. I revisited my GCSE art techniques and here we are. Again, I put this up on Twitter and now (at the the time I'm writing this) when you google "Conchúr White" it's the third top image of him which is a bit mad really. I think I spent all of about 20 minutes on Conchúr but another 45 minutes on the words behind him. The words are the names of the songs on his EP 'Bikini Crops', he doesn't just really love the idea of Channing Tatum driving him around at night in a daisy print bikini... Well maybe he does but what he does in his spare time is none of my business...
TechDif
So I mentioned that the pencil drawing of Conchúr came from a rough patch in my mental health and this one is no different! In fact this one came from an even worse circumstance so we love to see it. I had a bad, bad time in July and this started as a way of distracting myself from what was going on in my head. Without it, I can't honestly say I'd still be here so even if the final product of this had been a terrible mess I would still love it for keeping me alive. However, it did not turn out to be a terrible mess!
Now that the origin of this is out the way, where do I start with TechDif? Unlike Conchúr, I haven't really talked about them on here (unless you count one brief post about Citation Needed) before so I guess I'll do it here. The Technical Difficulties are a wonderful group of 4 British fellas who have had their fair share of fun online and even before. They did a radio show at university together, which went on to become their Reverse Trivia Podcast, later moving on to a panel show called 'Citation Needed': and a game called 'Two of These People Are Lying'. All of which I would thoroughly reccomend, they're one of my go to things when I'm having a rough time. All 4 of them are excellent! Tom Scott (red top, blue jeans on the picture) has his own YouTube channel which does content aside from TechDif. If you're quite nerdy and like science, linguistics, computers, or any number of other things you may enjoy Tom's channel. He is probably best described as "The Moderator" of the group, much like a tired teacher he tries desperately to keep everyone on track with what they're meant to be doing, but usually it does not end well for him. Then we have Matt Gray (space top, holding an ice cream) who also has a channel away from TechDif stuff, he does techy electronic things and has a series called 'Will it Soft Serve?' where he puts all kinds of strange things through a soft serve machine. Matt brings a very specific energy to TechDif and I can't fully describe what that vibe is but I love it. Matt and Tom also share a YouTube channel where TOTPAL is posted and they had a series called 'The Park Bench'. Moving on to everybody's favourite Gary Brannan: Gary Brannan (SATIRE hoodie, glasses) and can I just say, what a fella he is! He's just excellent! He is the one that will argue and rip into Tom the most (not in a malicious way) and hilarity ensues. There are some episodes where he is absolutely on it, getting all the points and others where he very clearly has no idea and that's where some of his funniest quotes come from. Given how badly I was doing at the time I made this, his response to it on Twitter was so so lovely. I specifically remember one tweet where he said I'd made him happy and although it was probably a flippant comment, it just made feel alright for a bit. Yeah I might be feeling awful right now, but I've made someone else happy so that's a nice feeling. Then last but certainly not least, we have Chris Joel (buffalo check shirt, beard)! I would be lying if I said he isn’t my favourite... His sense of humor is the one I vibe with most, he can get rather dramatic in parts and can chat bollocks like a champion. He has absolutely no online presence away from TechDif and, like Rens from Temples, I fully believe he’s a cryptid and lives off in a tree somewhere.
The picture took me about 4 days to complete, well 4 nights because I did most of it between the hours of 12 a.m. and 7a.m. - I remember watching the sun come through my window each morning. It’s made up of lots of little pieces, all cut out and stuck on; even the sky and hills are made of separate pieces of paper. Nothing was actually drawn on the piece of paper it’s all stuck on, it’s not how I usually do things but if I messed up one little but I could just redraw it rather than ruining the whole thing. The most tedious parts to make were Chris’ shirt because I had to draw each square individually and then join the as well, and cutting out the ban-hammer in the bottom right was surprisingly hard. Every single detail of the picture is a reference to the podcast/shows, I still have the plan sketch and reference list knocking about somewhere. I listened to a lot of true crime videos while making it to the point that certain parts remind me of different cases: the brandy now reminds me of Peter Tobin, and the big spiral thing reminds me of Tim McLean (very harrowing case) - sorry that fact is a bit morbid but interesting nonetheless.
I did post this for a little bit back in July, but I received some rather awful messages so I took it down. Generally, Tom Scott/TechDif fans are lovely but there’s been a few that have taken a disliking to me for some reason so I’m hoping they don’t resurface again. I’m in a better head space now though, so even if they do I’m more equipped to deal with it this time.
Hozier
This was a quick sketch I did in April, I was getting bored with lockdown and decided to summon the bog man himself. There’s not really much more backstory than that, no poor mental health story, no fun twitter story - he’s just here. He’s vibing. I will say I’m particularly proud of his nose, I just think it’s one of the best noses I’ve ever drawn. His hand is okay, but I think that the hands on my Conchúr drawings are better. So there is the Hozi-Boi...
The Corpse Bry
I’ve talked about Bry on here before as well, I love him, he’s excellent, top lad. He is a living Tim Burton character, he’s 6′6, very skinny, and his legs are longer than my will to live. I was watching ‘The Corpse Bride’ a few weeks ago and suddenly had an idea and so ‘The Corpse Bry’ came to be. I gave him a little panda friend because the panda has always been his animal - he used to wear a panda beanie all the time and his album had a panda on the cover. Again, there’s not really a fun story behind this one, I guess it’s somewhat fun because it’s the first art I made after finishing my psychology exams in October so it was nice to actually have the time to draw.
James Bagshaw
Ginger talking about Temples for the third post in a row? it’s more likely than you think! I did this one last week, I’d had a bit of a wobbly day and had group therapy on Teams in the evening and I just couldn’t concentrate on what was going on and I ended up doodling Mr James E. Bagshaw, the glitter crying fraggle man himself. It’s a bare-bones drawing that I could definitely work into more but I’m happy with it as it is to be honest. I’ll be damned if I’m going to sit and add the individual bits of fringe to his jacket, just thinking about doing that makes me tired. Maybe I’ll get around to drawing the whole band at some point...
Alice in “Wonderland”
This one is from about 5(?) years ago, it’s not my typical style and was a “study” based on another artists work (basically i just had to copy this fellas work). I’ll be honest, this one has a sketchy backstory that I won’t go in to because it’s not exactly a nice one, and because of that I also won’t say who the artist is that it’s based on. Despite this, I’m still really proud of this one and I’m so sad that I never got this piece back after I got taken out the class. I’ve considered trying this style again, I’ve even joked about doing another Conchúr drawing in this style as a nod to my progression through GCSE art, eventually leading to Conchúr drawn in ink on music manuscript and stained with neon paint and dyes - it would be quite the project!
So this has been quite a lengthy post so apologies about that but life goes on. Similar to the vinyl post, I’ll probably add to this as and when I make more art. Even if no one is reading these posts, I’m enjoying making them so that’s the main thing. It’s just nice to document things and the feelings that go with them. 💕
~ Love Ginger xx
My Top 10 Movies Of 2017
So this was hard because I saw a lot of good shit this year and I thought 2017 was a way better year for films than 2016. Here’s my list:
1. Baby Driver Is Edgar Wright capable of making a terrible movie? The answer so far has been a resounding no. The man who gave us The Cornetto Trilogy and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World continues his unstoppable streak as one of the best film makers of the 21st century and gives us a fantastic hybrid of heist movie and jukebox musical. Baby Driver is an excellent example of great character study, technical prowess, and scene geography. I adored every second of it. It also has the best soundtrack of the year. Oh, and a film that finally knows how to use Jon Hamm correctly!
2. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Are Wonder Woman, Logan, and Thor: Ragnarok technically better movies than this? Probably. But I don’t care. GOTG Vol. 2 is still my favorite comic book movie of 2017 and holds the most emotional resonance for me. It deals with themes of losing a parent, toxic fatherhood, and making a family of people who aren’t blood-related to you and it had many moments where I wept in a movie theater openly. It’s a tearjerking heartbreaker that still manages to deliver the laughs and satisfying space battles. I can’t wait to see what James Gunn has in store for us in Guardians 3.
3. Blade Runner 2049 Easily the best science fiction movie of 2017. Absolutely gorgeous to look at, fantastic performances all around (including one of the best roles Harrison Ford has had in many years) and manages to ask a lot of poignant questions about what it means to be human. There are things about it I like even more than the original and that’s saying a lot. Unfortunately this didn’t do well at the box office, but I hope more people do see it. Denis Villeneuve is one of the most gifted directors working today.
4. Thor: Ragnarok The best movie in the Thor trilogy, the most fun I had at a movie all year, and it has some subtle anti-colonialism messaging to boot. Marvel lets Taika Waititi loose on their product and he gave us a cosmic party adventure that wouldn’t look out of place in the Flash Gordon universe. It’s drenched in 80′s - the colors, the costume design, and Mark Mothersbaugh’s synthy score, but it doesn’t feel cynical like the upcoming Ready Player One. Also, hearing the term “devil’s anus” in a superhero movie will never not be funny to me.
5. I, Tonya Darkly funny, well acted, and an almost feminist call-to-arms to reevaluate Tonya Harding in the pop-culture landscape. This is a star-making turn for Margot Robbie and I hope she wins all the awards she can for it. We also see strong acting from Sebastian Stan, Allison Janney, Paul Walter Hauser, and Bobby Canavale. The cast is stellar. I only saw this a couple days ago as of typing this out and I can’t stop thinking about it.
6. Star Wars: The Last Jedi My favorite Star Wars movie since The Empire Strikes Back. I loved The Force Awakens but you can’t deny it played it quite safe. This, on the other hand, does not. I love the weird, bold choices it makes in terms of storytelling and the Star Wars mythos, the characters, and the stunning visuals. Mark Hamill has never been better as Luke Skywalker and Rey, Kylo, Poe, and Finn continue to be fascinating. I also really loved Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, a fangirl who loves Finn but doesn’t shy away from pointing out his faults. Plus a lot of MRA and Reddit choads hated this movie which gives it a ringing endorsement, as far as I’m concerned.
7. Logan Lucky Holy shit. A movie about working-class people that doesn’t condescend to them. Steven Soderbergh’s return to the director’s chair sees him going back to the well for a heist movie but I liked this way better than any of his Ocean’s films. Adam Driver’s quiet dignity as Clyde and Channing Tatum’s likable Jimmy make for a great duo. Though Daniel Craig steals the show as Joe Bang. He’s terrific. There’s a scene in this movie where a little girl sings “Country Roads” by John Denver at a beauty pageant and could have been corny as hell and laughable. But it’s not. It’s a show-stopper and an emotionally effective moment.
8. Get Out The best horror movie of the year. No contest. Smart and genuinely scary. It has a lot of intelligent and relevant commentary about race in America but never comes across as preachy and heavy-handed. The fact that this is Jordan Peele’s first time as a director is astonishing. Oh, and I will never look at a spoon tapping against a teacup the same way ever again. *shudders*
9. Logan So if you’re Fox what do you do with the X-Men franchise after the disappointment of Apocalypse? Why, you do a Wolverine solo movie, make it R-Rated, and turn the universe into a dystopian western. Nice. Logan isn’t for everyone - it’s violent and bloody as hell and there are no happy endings. But I fucking loved it. It’s certainly the best X-Men film since First Class. Dafne Keen is a revelation as Laura Kinney (X-23) and one of my favorite female characters in recent memory. When her claws came out the first time I literally squeed in the theater. Please give her her own movie as soon as possible. Logan is a fitting send-off to Hugh Jackman’s signature role.
10. War For The Planet Of The Apes The third entry in the second best trilogy of the 2010′s (the first being Captain America) is a different breed of summer blockbuster and one I hope to see more of. It’s thoughtful, ambitious, and emotionally devastating. The themes of slavery and genocide and the allusions to militias and the white power movement are pretty clear and it definitely puts you on the side of the apes. Andy Serkis is still amazing as Caesar and the motion capture used to create him is astoundingly realistic, Woody Harrelson is genuinely frightening as the main villain, and Amiah Miller as the mute Nova is one of the best child performances of the year. Oh, and that last shot is killer. I’m hoping they make more of these films, but if they don’t this is one hell of a finale.
Some honorable mentions: Spider-Man: Homecoming Huge thank you to Marvel Studios for saving our favorite webslinger from the awful Amazing Spider-Man franchise, two movies that turned Peter Parker into Edward Cullen from Twilight (ugh).
Wonder Woman After the cinematic wrongness of Man Of Steel, Batman v. Superman, and Suicide Squad (three of the worst big-budget movies of the decade that are not Transformers films), I had really low expectations for this one and was pleasantly surprised by how good this is. Three words: No Man’s Land.
IT Another film that surprised the hell out of me. A horror movie released in the beginning of September has no fucking right to be this good. But it is!
Dunkirk Christopher Nolan at the peak of his powers. This almost made my top 10 list for its technical acumen alone but it didn’t quite make the cut.
Atomic Blonde Probably the best pure action movie of the year. Is the plot convoluted as all hell? Sure. But it has Charlize Theron kicking major ass in well-choreographed fight scenes and making out with Sofia Boutella. What’s not to love?
Battle of SuperHeroes - Batch#2 (featuring Deadpool, Daredevil, The Flash and Doctor Strange)
With the first batch of heroes done and dusted, it's time to find out who's in our second batch.
A new selection of 16 super heroes are waiting for you to pick your favourite - as before, over the course 8 heats, 4 quarter-finals, 2 semi-finals and the final.
Here are the contenders:
CATWOMAN
The main gal from Batman's 'rogue gallery'. Selina Kyle is a popular one. And not just with Bruce Wayne! The thief (or 'cat burglar') has appeared in each generation of Batflicks - in the 60s film BATMAN: THE MOVIE, Lee Meriwether played the feline, Michelle Pfeiffer donned the cat-suit in BATMAN RETURNS, and in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Anne Hathaway took the famous role. We have yet to have the DCEU Catwoman, but she's going to play a part in the upcoming GOTHAM CITY SIRENS, so lookout for a future casting announcement!
CYBORG
Victor Stone is becoming quite a popular member of the Justice League in the comics, and we've recently spotted the first big screen portrayal from Ray Fisher in the DCEU. Right now, only a cameo in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, but with bigger roles in JUSTICE LEAGUE, THE FLASH and (of course) CYBORG.
CYCLOPS
Scott Summers, the team captain of the X-Men. His relationship with Jean Grey, and their family line is legendary in the Marvel comics. (Not to mention complicated). James Marsden played the role in the first three X-MEN films (plus a cameo in DAYS OF FUTURE PAST) whilst Tye Sheridan has recently taken on the laser-eye hero, next to be seen in X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX.
DAREDEVIL
Matt Murdock, the blind lawyer of Hell's Kitchen, has enjoyed resurged popularity, thanks to the recent Marvel Netflix series, starring Charlie Cox. He's enjoyed two seasons, and will next be seen in the anticipated DEFENDERS series. A pleasant turnaround for the character after the much-maligned Ben Affleck film.
DARKSEID
Get ready, because everything points to Darkseid being the over-lord villain of the JUSTICE LEAGUE film in the DCEU, having been teased in BATMAN V SUPERMAN.
DEADPOOL
Who doesn't love Wade Wells, aka the Merc with a mouth?! After a dubious big screen outing in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, Ryan Reynolds championed a return to the role, and DEADPOOL was a hit, with not one, but two sequels on the way.
DOCTOR DOOM
The main villain for the Fantastic Four, Victor Von Doom has been played by Julian McMahon and Toby Kebbell in the big screen versions. For me, I got to know the metal-faced bad guy in an 80s Spider-Man cartoon!
DOCTOR MANHATTAN
An omnipotent Mars-dwelling naked blue guy from the WATCHMEN comic and film, He's pretty impressive tbh, and I had to include him in this Battle of Super Heroes! He was played by Billy Crudup in the movie.
DOCTOR STRANGE
Recently brought to life by Benedict Cumberbatch, The Sorcerer Supreme offers the MCU a gateway into magic (against the science grounding it's been used to). Strange will next be seen in THOR: RAGNAROK before joining the rest of the Avengers in INFINITY WAR.
DRAX THE DESTROYER
Between James Gunn's writing, direction and Dave Bautista's portrayal, the character Drax went straight to the audiences' hearts in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and the sequel. But as funny as he is, let's not forget it's also dangerous and angry. That may well play a part in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR!
ELEKTRA
Jennifer Garner played the assassin in the Affleck starrer DAREDEVIL, proving popular enough to get a spin-off. Recently, the character appeared in the second season of the Netflix series, and despite dying, will be resurrected for THE DEFENDERS, played by Elodie Yung.
FALCON
Sam Wilson has proved a popular inclusion in the MCU, debuting in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, with a further three appearances, stepping up as an Avenger - much to excitement of actor Anthony Mackie, one of the most enthusiastic and energetic actors in Marvel. In the comics, Wilson picks up the shield and becomes Captain America. Will the same happen in the cinematic universe?
THE FLASH
The fastest man alive is doing double duties right now. Barry Allen is played by Grant Gustin in the popular TV series, that connects to ARROW, SUPERGIRL and LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, whilst the DCEU movie line chose to cast a second actor to play Barry, with Ezra Miller already having made cameo in both BATMAN V SUPERMAN and SUICIDE SQUAD.
GALACTUS
The cosmic entity that consumes worlds, is a gigantic villain associated with the Fantastic Four, and was featured in FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER.
GAMBIT
One of the most popular X-Men, Remy Le Beau can charge items to explode, thanks to his mutant powers. The Cajun was played by Taylor Kitsch in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, and is expected to have a reboot in the next couple of years, when he's recast with Channing Tatum.
GAMORA
One of Thanos' 'daughters', Gamora makes up one of the Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as love interest for Peter Quill. Zoe Saldana has played the role in the two films, and will continue playing the green assassin for AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, the untitled AVENGERS 4 before rounding out her time in the gang in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 3.
So, there you have it. Those are our 16 opponents for Batch#2. Now, head over to twitter, add procrastinalien and vote for your favourite in each battle!
You've got 3 days - happy voting!
I decided to create a dance festival simply for the reason that dance can be a way of personal, mental relief and also as a way of communication. Just like in music, dance has thousands of different forms, it exists in many different cultures and areas and it has a long history.
My concept for this festival was to make a global international peaceful festival where everyone dance fan or not, from any culture and ethnicity can participate and present their dances to the stage and come together through dancing... although the performed dances would mainly be modern.
The aim of the festival is to basically bring everyone together from all around the world and be united (name and slogan: check name concept and thinking above) inspired by the show Eurovision where their aim is to bring everyone together through singing and music.
SIXERS RUMORS: Dennis Smith, Patty Mills, and More
This post is brought to you with limited advertising and no surveys by Michael Parisano. Are you looking to buy or sell your home? Are you a first time buyer looking to buy your first home? If the answer to one of those questions is “yes,” please consider contacting Michael Parisano of Coldwell Banker Preferred. Over 70% of Michael’s clients are first time buyers. Michael Parisano is a native of Delaware County and a graduate of Cardinal O’Hara High School & Temple University. He works with buyers, sellers, renters, and landlords throughout the city of Philadelphia, Delaware County, Chester County, and Montgomery County. Michael is driven, honest, and always strives to be the hardest worker in the room. His main goal is to help his clients find their dream home and to make that process as stress free as possible. Please contact Michael at [email protected] or call him at 610-348-9931.
OK let’s get this first one out of the way right off the bat. Stefan Bondy covers the Knicks. Why is he reporting about the Sixers? Fuck knows! But here’s how I read this: Bryan Colangelo is taking a point guard or at least wants people to think he’s taking a point guard.
Fox: Love him. Just not for the Sixers. He seems to have the widest DELTA between his floor and ceiling of any of the four (now five and maybe even six) guys projected to be taken third. He’s crazy athletic and quick, but he can’t shoot, is a bit erratic, and somewhat small. If this were a year ago and the Sxiers weren’t ready to turn the page, I’d be willing to take a chance on Fox because he has superstar potential. Alas. Colangelo is (I think rightfully) set to move forward, and Fox really isn’t a great fit.
Dennis Smith Jr.: I’m gonna be real transparent– a highlight video of Smith from his high school days popped up on my Facebook feed last night and by the end of it I had already customized my Smith Jr. jersey on Sixers.com. I haven’t done a deep dive on him yet (I will today), but the skinny is that he’s a talented, NBA-skilled point guard who can get to the rim and shoot effectively but lacks decision-making ability, played for a lousy NC State team, and is 15 months removed from tearing his ACL (fun fact: Kyle Lowry tore his ACL before his freshman season, and this injury basically means nothing anymore).
Smith seems to be getting a lot of buzz lately, oh and he just happens to be a point guard who checks most of the boxes the Sixers need. There’s also an interesting theory in this FanSided breakdown of his game, which posits that he was hurt by his supporting cast and routinely had to deal with multiple defenders, and may have played timid after recovering from said knee injury:
However, as with Fultz and outlined in earlier Smith breakdowns, if you delve deeper for team context the fact Smith was able to get to the rim as much as he did given his surrounding personnel was impressive. As scouts and writers start to dive back into the tape on Smith, the lack of spacing and secondary playmaking talent Smith dealt with was clear. He routinely saw multiple bodies attacking the paint, as illustrated in this handy snapshot from DraftExpress’ Josh Riddell.
…
The best way I can characterize Smith’s athleticism display last year is inconsistent. There’s a decent argument to be had that potential physical limitations, operating at less than 100 percent healthwise, may have constrained Smith physically on the court, but also mental hesitancy post-injury.
As ex-head coach Mark Gottfried noted in an interview with the New York Post, it takes time for an athlete like Smith to regain confidence in his body after sustaining a significant injury. You could see this manifest on the court at times last season, especially against notable athletes in space. I noted this in a video breakdown against the Blue Devils in January, and plays like this against Frank Jackson in space just scream hesitancy.
Keep in mind, the other top prospects other than Fultz played for UCLA, Kentucky, Kansas and Duke.
I don’t love the idea of a player coming in with built-in excuses, but both of these could be legitimate reasons for a somewhat muted output. Though taking yet another player with lower-body injury concerns scares the actual shit out of me. Yep, I just took a Marcus.
…
I thought this watching the Spurs this postseason and wondered why Mills’ name hadn’t come up for the Sixers. Now it has.
Mills is Australian, so the combination of him, Brett Brown and Ben Simmons would make the Sixers ripe for Outback and Fosters sponsorships that would build Scott O’Neil another vacation home. Get ready for Shrimp on the Barbie Night in the lux seats. The rest of you peons get $8 Fosters specials.
Mills is 28 and can shoot the three (over 40% this year), but has been a career backup to Tony Parker. A good backup, but still a backup. He has the right combination of skills the Sixers are looking for – can handle the ball but play off it too – but forgive me for not getting too excited about a 28-year-old averaging 9 and 3 per game who is a defensive liability.
…
Here is an obscenely long article from Marc Whittington at Liberty Ballers making the case for Jayson Tatum:
Narrative 2: Tatum lives in the midrange, and is an iso-scorer.
Yes, Tatum does use a larger share of possessions for isolation than many prospects. However, that does not make him either incapable of playing different styles or incompatible with the modern game.
Tatum’s isolation style jumps off the screen when you watch him. Any highlight compilation will feature one or two pinch post-ups or an isolation drive. That many of these plays result in long 2’s has garnered him (wrongful) comparisons to Carmelo Anthony and DeMar DeRozan.
But this also overstates the impact his style has on a game overall. According to Synergy, Tatum used 23.2% of his finishing possessions for isolations (117 total). This puts him very high among college athletes— for instance Josh Jackson only used 46 isolations, 7.8% of his finishing possessions. However, it is still a remarkably small number of plays given the length of a college basketball season.
Tatum’s usage rate was 26.2% this year. If 23% of his usage was reserved for isolations, that comes to only 6.1% of Duke’s possessions while he was in the game, which is fewer than 4 possessions per game. In a smaller role in the NBA, those possessions will shrink further to potentially only 1 or 2 per game. An occasional isolation play is hardly a ball-stopping, offense detonating disaster, and Tatum doesn’t project to destroy motion offenses because he played an iso-heavy style in college.
Moreover, there have been plenty of players who shouldered heavy usage, isolation roles in college who then adjusted to playing more of an off-ball role in the NBA. Gerald Henderson, Klay Thompson, and Luke Babbitt(!!) all used more possessions for isolation in college, and no one would dream about labeling them isolation players now.
Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant may be great examples of how being iso-heavy in college does not necessarily lead to iso-dependency in the NBA. Both were high usage isolation players in college (Durant used an equal percentage of possessions as Tatum did). Golden State avoids isolation even when they might exploit mismatches, preferring player motion, intricate screening, and ball movement to capitalize on them. This is one of the most sophisticated offenses in the NBA, and both players are key contributors to its success despite their college playing style. There is no reason why the same should not be true of Tatum.
I respect the hell out of this breakdown and the work that went into it, but it feels like Whittington, who just dismissed the percentage-based evaluations that define modern day NBA analytics with a wave of the hand and a “yeah, but 23% isn’t really that high,” is trying to talk himself into Tatum. What he wrote here amounts to: Sure, Tatum takes a lot of jump shots, but it’s not as many as you think and he can totally change, just like Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson. Problem: Kevin Durant was a freak who could get to the rim and shoot the three better than Tatum. And Klay Thompson is an all-world shooter. Tatum is neither of those things. He’s also somewhat slow and his old-school skill set doesn’t translate well to the modern NBA, certainly not for a team like the Sixers.
…
Matt Mullin delves into the possibility of the Sixers’ signing the Wizards’ Otto Porter. I like Porter– he’s 6’8 and shot over 40% from three. But popular conjecture has the Wizards retaining him.
OK let’s get this first one out of the way right off the bat. Stefan Bondy covers the Knicks. Why is he reporting about the Sixers? Fuck knows! But here’s how I read this: Bryan Colangelo is taking a point guard or at least wants people to think he’s taking a point guard.
Fox: Love him. Just not for the Sixers. He seems to have the widest DELTA between his floor and ceiling of any of the four (now five and maybe even six) guys projected to be taken third. He’s crazy athletic and quick, but he can’t shoot, is a bit erratic, and somewhat small. If this were a year ago and the Sxiers weren’t ready to turn the page, I’d be willing to take a chance on Fox because he has superstar potential. Alas. Colangelo is (I think rightfully) set to move forward, and Fox really isn’t a great fit.
Dennis Smith Jr.: I’m gonna be real transparent– a highlight video of Smith from his high school days popped up on my Facebook feed last night and by the end of it I had already customized my Smith Jr. jersey on Sixers.com. I haven’t done a deep dive on him yet (I will today), but the skinny is that he’s a talented, NBA-skilled point guard who can get to the rim and shoot effectively but lacks decision-making ability, played for a lousy NC State team, and is 15 months removed from tearing his ACL (fun fact: Kyle Lowry tore his ACL before his freshman season, and this injury basically means nothing anymore).
Smith seems to be getting a lot of buzz lately, oh and he just happens to be a point guard who checks most of the boxes the Sixers need. There’s also an interesting theory in this FanSided breakdown of his game, which posits that he was hurt by his supporting cast and routinely had to deal with multiple defenders, and may have played timid after recovering from said knee injury:
However, as with Fultz and outlined in earlier Smith breakdowns, if you delve deeper for team context the fact Smith was able to get to the rim as much as he did given his surrounding personnel was impressive. As scouts and writers start to dive back into the tape on Smith, the lack of spacing and secondary playmaking talent Smith dealt with was clear. He routinely saw multiple bodies attacking the paint, as illustrated in this handy snapshot from DraftExpress’ Josh Riddell.
…
The best way I can characterize Smith’s athleticism display last year is inconsistent. There’s a decent argument to be had that potential physical limitations, operating at less than 100 percent healthwise, may have constrained Smith physically on the court, but also mental hesitancy post-injury.
As ex-head coach Mark Gottfried noted in an interview with the New York Post, it takes time for an athlete like Smith to regain confidence in his body after sustaining a significant injury. You could see this manifest on the court at times last season, especially against notable athletes in space. I noted this in a video breakdown against the Blue Devils in January, and plays like this against Frank Jackson in space just scream hesitancy.
Keep in mind, the other top prospects other than Fultz played for UCLA, Kentucky, Kansas and Duke.
I don’t love the idea of a player coming in with built-in excuses, but both of these could be legitimate reasons for a somewhat muted output. Though taking yet another player with lower-body injury concerns scares the actual shit out of me. Yep, I just took a Marcus.
…
I thought this watching the Spurs this postseason and wondered why Mills’ name hadn’t come up for the Sixers. Now it has.
Mills is Australian, so the combination of him, Brett Brown and Ben Simmons would make the Sixers ripe for Outback and Fosters sponsorships that would build Scott O’Neil another vacation home. Get ready for Shrimp on the Barbie Night in the lux seats. The rest of you peons get $8 Fosters specials.
Mills is 28 and can shoot the three (over 40% this year), but has been a career backup to Tony Parker. A good backup, but still a backup. He has the right combination of skills the Sixers are looking for – can handle the ball but play off it too – but forgive me for not getting too excited about a 28-year-old averaging 9 and 3 per game who is a defensive liability.
…
Here is an obscenely long article from Marc Whittington at Liberty Ballers making the case for Jayson Tatum:
Narrative 2: Tatum lives in the midrange, and is an iso-scorer.
Yes, Tatum does use a larger share of possessions for isolation than many prospects. However, that does not make him either incapable of playing different styles or incompatible with the modern game.
Tatum’s isolation style jumps off the screen when you watch him. Any highlight compilation will feature one or two pinch post-ups or an isolation drive. That many of these plays result in long 2’s has garnered him (wrongful) comparisons to Carmelo Anthony and DeMar DeRozan.
But this also overstates the impact his style has on a game overall. According to Synergy, Tatum used 23.2% of his finishing possessions for isolations (117 total). This puts him very high among college athletes— for instance Josh Jackson only used 46 isolations, 7.8% of his finishing possessions. However, it is still a remarkably small number of plays given the length of a college basketball season.
Tatum’s usage rate was 26.2% this year. If 23% of his usage was reserved for isolations, that comes to only 6.1% of Duke’s possessions while he was in the game, which is fewer than 4 possessions per game. In a smaller role in the NBA, those possessions will shrink further to potentially only 1 or 2 per game. An occasional isolation play is hardly a ball-stopping, offense detonating disaster, and Tatum doesn’t project to destroy motion offenses because he played an iso-heavy style in college.
Moreover, there have been plenty of players who shouldered heavy usage, isolation roles in college who then adjusted to playing more of an off-ball role in the NBA. Gerald Henderson, Klay Thompson, and Luke Babbitt(!!) all used more possessions for isolation in college, and no one would dream about labeling them isolation players now.
Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant may be great examples of how being iso-heavy in college does not necessarily lead to iso-dependency in the NBA. Both were high usage isolation players in college (Durant used an equal percentage of possessions as Tatum did). Golden State avoids isolation even when they might exploit mismatches, preferring player motion, intricate screening, and ball movement to capitalize on them. This is one of the most sophisticated offenses in the NBA, and both players are key contributors to its success despite their college playing style. There is no reason why the same should not be true of Tatum.
I respect the hell out of this breakdown and the work that went into it, but it feels like Whittington, who just dismissed the percentage-based evaluations that define modern day NBA analytics with a wave of the hand and a “yeah, but 23% isn’t really that high,” is trying to talk himself into Tatum. What he wrote here amounts to: Sure, Tatum takes a lot of jump shots, but it’s not as many as you think and he can totally change, just like Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson. Problem: Kevin Durant was a freak who could get to the rim and shoot the three better than Tatum. And Klay Thompson is an all-world shooter. Tatum is neither of those things. He’s also somewhat slow and his old-school skill set doesn’t translate well to the modern NBA, certainly not for a team like the Sixers.
…
Matt Mullin delves into the possibility of the Sixers’ signing the Wizards’ Otto Porter. I like Porter– he’s 6’8 and shot over 40% from three. But popular conjecture has the Wizards retaining him.
