The rain hadn’t stopped since late last night, and honestly, you were grateful for it.

Heavy sheets tapped the windows like a lullaby, rolling thunder in the distance more comforting than menacing. The sky outside was a steely grey, casting the living room in the kind of muted light that makes everything feel soft and still. The kind of day that made plans feel impossible and staying in feel like the only right choice.

You were stretched across the couch, legs long and bare in your grey sweats, with a soft throw blanket slung over both you and the small girl lying on top of you. Sabrina was curled into your chest, chin propped up just enough to see the screen, her fingers tracing idle patterns along your forearm—again.

It wasn’t the first time today, or this week.

She was obsessed with your tattoos.

Every single time you were in a tank top or anything short-sleeved, her fingers would automatically find them. Even in the middle of conversations, her fingertips would ghost over the ink like she was trying to memorize the shape of them all.

“You’re not watching the movie,” you murmured, brushing your lips lightly over the top of her head.

“I’m multitasking,” she replied, voice soft and raspy from sleep. “I can trace and listen. I’m very talented, you know.”

You chuckled, your hand slowly running up and down her spine under the blanket.

“I’m starting to think you love the tattoos more than you love me.”

She made a small, offended sound in her throat and popped her head up to look at you.

“You take that back,” she said, eyes wide and playful, her blonde hair a little messy from the way she’d been laying.

“Take what back?”

“That slander. I love you. The tattoos are just a bonus.”

“A bonus?” you teased, raising a brow. “Is that all I am to you? A hot canvas?”

She leaned forward and kissed the corner of your mouth. “A very hot canvas.”

Your arm tightened around her waist, pulling her closer, and you kissed the tip of her nose just to watch her scrunch it.

Sabrina settled back down on your chest, her fingers returning to the ink on your upper arm—a script tattoo written in a looping, handwritten scrawl.

She was silent for a few beats, just tracing the letters, before she asked softly, “Can I ask what this one means?”

You didn’t have to look to know which one she meant. It was one of the first tattoos you ever got, and it always seemed to be the one she came back to.

“It’s my mom’s handwriting,” you said after a moment. “From a note she left me before I left for college. Says, ‘Be brave, and call me if you get lonely.’”

Sabrina’s fingers stilled. Then she whispered, “That’s so sweet.”

You shrugged a little, suddenly aware of how personal it sounded out loud.

“She used to tuck notes into everything. Backpacks, coat pockets. I didn’t even notice this one until I was unpacking my dorm. I was having a rough time adjusting—y’know, quiet and homesick. Then I found it folded in a sock.”

Sabrina was quiet again for a few seconds, the rain still tapping rhythmically on the windows. Her hand moved to the next tattoo—an outline of a delicate flower just under your bicep.

“And this one?”

You smiled a little. “Wildflower. It was my sister’s favorite before she passed.”

Her fingers pressed gently against the petals. “She’d be proud of you,” she said quietly.

You didn’t answer right away, just let your hand drift up to her back again, fingers splayed over the soft cotton of her oversized hoodie—your hoodie, technically, but it always looked better on her.

“I hope so,” you finally murmured.

Sabrina pressed a kiss to your chest, right over your heartbeat.

She didn’t pry or push. That was one of the things you loved most about her. She could be curious, but she was never demanding. Always gentle. Always knowing when to ask and when to just be with you.

“Do you ever think about getting more?” she asked after a few quiet minutes, her fingers now tracing the edges of a geometric design on your forearm.

You grinned lazily. “You mean besides the one you keep begging me to get?”

Her head popped up again. “Okay, first of all, I didn’t beg. I made a very compelling pitch.”

“Oh right,” you laughed. “The matching heart on the ribcage one.”

“It’s romantic!” she insisted. “And painful, which means it counts.”

You leaned in, brushing your nose against hers. “Tell you what… You get the heart first, and I’ll follow.”

Sabrina narrowed her eyes. “You’d let me go through all that pain alone?”

“You’re the one who pitched it,” you shrugged, smirking.

She rolled her eyes dramatically and settled back down, this time pulling the blanket tighter around both of you.

The rain outside got a little heavier, and the thunder grumbled again, soft and low. On the TV, some random comfort movie played, half-forgotten. It was more background noise than entertainment now.

Her hand moved lower to your inner wrist, fingers ghosting over a tiny minimalist compass inked in black.

“This one’s always been one of my favorites,” she said softly.

“Yeah?”

“Mmhm,” she hummed. “What’s it for?”

You hesitated for a moment, then said, “It’s a reminder to stay on course. I got it after a really dark time. I’d been… losing myself, kind of spiraling. So I needed something that said, ‘hey, keep going. North is still there.’”

Her fingers wrapped around your wrist delicately, like she was holding more than just your skin. Like she was holding the moment that birthed that tattoo.

“I’m glad you kept going,” she whispered.

You turned your head and kissed the crown of hers. “Me too. Otherwise I wouldn’t have met this tiny gremlin who’s always stealing my hoodies and tracing my ink like I’m an ancient map.”

She let out a muffled laugh and nuzzled into your chest. “You love it.”

“I really do.”

You could feel her smile against you, the quiet kind of contentment that didn’t need words. The weight of her was warm and grounding, and everything about the moment felt sacred in a subtle way—like something you’d look back on in ten years and still feel the echo of.

A beat passed before she said, “I think you should get one for us.”

You looked down at her. “A tattoo?”

She nodded without lifting her head.

“Okay,” you said, easy. “What kind?”

She tilted her chin, meeting your eyes. “Something that’s just ours. Like a little thing no one else would even notice.”

“Like a secret?” you asked.

“Exactly. A quiet one.”

You smiled and rubbed your thumb over her lower back.

“Then we should get it on our hands. Something small. A symbol or a letter. Something only we’d know to look for.”

Sabrina’s eyes softened. “You’d really do that?”

“Of course. If it means something to you, it means something to me.”

She grinned wide, eyes glittering even in the dim rainy light, and pulled herself up to kiss you—slow and sweet. You cradled her face with one hand as she leaned into it, her lips gentle against yours, tasting like warmth and sugar and lazy Sunday mornings.

When you pulled back, her smile lingered.

“I love you,” she said softly.

You smirked. “Is that because of the tattoos or despite them?”

“Because, obviously,” she teased. “But also because you’re warm, and you smell good, and you laugh when you think no one’s listening. And because you remember your sister’s favorite flower.”

Your throat tightened unexpectedly. You looked away for a second to steady yourself.

“Hey,” she said gently, fingers curling under your chin to guide your eyes back. “It’s okay.”

“I just… I didn’t know how much I needed a day like this.”

“Me neither.”

You pulled her even closer until she was practically molded into you, legs tangled, blanket snug. The world could’ve ended outside and you probably wouldn’t have noticed.

After a long, soft silence, Sabrina murmured, “Do you think I’d suit a tattoo?”

You smiled. “Yeah, but only a tiny one. Something cute and subtle.”

She grinned. “Like a little star?”

“Or a little knife,” you deadpanned. “To match the chaos.”

She smacked your arm lightly, laughing. “Rude.”

“But accurate.”

She looked up again, her head resting on your chest like it belonged there— it does. “Do you ever regret any of them?”

You shook your head. “Not a single one. They’re like a roadmap. Every mark’s a story. Even the sad ones remind me that I lived through it.”

Sabrina’s smile softened. “That’s kind of beautiful.”

“You’re kind of beautiful.”

She rolled her eyes but blushed anyway, hiding her face in your neck.

You exhaled slowly, your body sinking deeper into the cushions and into her.

And for the first time in a long time, you weren’t thinking about anything else. Not tomorrow, not worries, not your phone buzzing on the coffee table. Just her, in your arms, while the rain kept falling like a lullaby meant just for the two of you.

I'd get tatted the fuck up if I had the money and a personal tattoo artist, because these motherfuckers are always booked 😭 (Good for them, though!!)

Big ones: a T-rex and Triceratops skull, a dagger stabbed through a rose, a portrait of my first dog, a bouquet of wildflowers with a bee and a butterfly, a compass with a scroll and feather pen (all on right arm)

Tiny tattoos: ohana, mountains, and arrow, a pumpkin

And a big ass deer skull on my left thigh.

Reyes is a real boy now! Meaning I made some real tats for him instead of using half-assed placeholders, hah.

The floral is all Colorado wildflowers (where he was 'born'), and the cyber-sleeve doubles as an implant connected to his bike. The snake shoulder piece is mostly the same but I changed it to a rattler and more wildflowers.

The tiger and flame pieces are shitty leftovers from his host that he just hasn't bothered covering up, but they're all faded because he doesn't maintain them like the ones he actually got himself.

Also I wanted to tell you guys I think I have an idea for a(nother) possible Hozier tattoo.

So y'all know I maybe wanted a "Wildflower and Barley" inspired tat. I've also been wanting an Arvad inspired tat for years (is it cringey? yes. but he's My Special Guy who helped me not off myself when I was 18). Anyway.

I was thinking like, his sword in the dirt where you can just see the pommel and stuff (listen I don't know all the sword parts lol). And there's a flower, probably a gladiolus, growing out of the ground along with barley. People who aren't me/I haven't told about Arvad/haven't seen his art won't know about it, it's just a cool sword in a dirt with some plants.

As for why the gladiolus, I think they're pretty flowers, and in the language of flowers they stand for strength of character. I've wanted a gladiolus tattoo for a while as well and I want to tie everything together nicely

I think that aging and 'life milestones' and just society as a whole has really affected they way people view their progress in life! Youve expressed how those are things you've genuinely wanted and its understandable how it can feel like youre 'running out of time' or whatever but idk maybe bc I am younger so i probably don't have enough perspective but you don't have to settle for that! and I seriously hate when people enforce those thought bc THEY ARE WACK AND IN THE END YOU ARE LIVING YOUR LIFE!

My parents and their dynamic is a lot to unpack lol whats wild is that they don't argue or at least have screaming matches that are intense so I guess in one way that was good?? But yeah the cliff notes version is that when I was younger they were like 'perfect' or at least had a loving partnership then shit hit the fan lol But one thing my therapist said to me was that there is no need to worry about ending up like my parents/extended family bc Im already not like them so Im not 'cursed' and knowing that is a good sign! idk if that makes sense but at least you're aware! BUT i know it can be more complicated than that and I would never try to diminish your experiences and feelings!!!!

Anyways my TA really flopped tbh lol But i will be giving him the benefit of the doubt! plus its getting warmer now so today he wore a vintage tee and his arms looked so good😭 like hes so tatted 😭 I cant help it, i am just a girl😔BUT IM HAPPY YOUR BOOK WAS GOOD! No you're so right and you do have a lot of time! I sound so negative. TBH I probably do have a lot of time left myself but I'm just so frustrated with the way the world is right now. Wish I bought myself a house back in 2009 when I was in 7th grade kind of thing, ya know? ANYWAY I'm fine, truly. I'm actually feeling so much better today compared to yesterday.

That's probably a huge comfort about your parents and what your therapist said. Families are so tough. I love my family but I don't like them (especially my extended family). It's tough out there.

WE CAN FORGIVE A MAN WITH NICE ARMS! We'll give him another go. Hopefully his next lecture (if that happens) will show some improvement.

i haven't decided on teams yet, but scarf, satchel, and ducky are team leaders, in a way. they can't be eliminated, but they also can't win challenges for their team (i will probably rarely write about the actual challenges, since they really don't matter that much). this makes their relationships a bit tense as they grow close to their teammates and, of course, want their team to win so the people they are close to don't get eliminated. (this gets WAY worse once it's revealed that the eliminated contestants are dying

(this is about a third of the way to half of the way through the competition) scarf is the one to discover that the eliminated contestants are being buried. after all, what other conclusion is there to come to if you see a patch of wildflowers (in an environment that you've only ever seen grow grass and trees in the last year) after wildflower's elimination

roulette is the one doing the burying. it makes everything weigh down on their conscious a little less, as the eliminated contestants would just be left to rot if they weren't there

roulette also just does worse and worse as the competition goes on. this guy needs therapy

satchel tries to kill notepad at some point (i know it's after the reveal that the eliminated contestants are dead) though i'm not sure as to the motive. i assume some sort of argument about whether it's more important to focus on the contestants (keeping them alive/mourning the eliminated contestants) or on tangram (since no tangram means no show which means no more eliminations)

scarf is the one to find notepad, who's in poor condition but alive, as they fell into one of the few non-grass areas that are in reach (as there's just a bunch of somewhat loose soil which is very fun to dig in)

ducky goes missing between this point in time and tangram's disappearance. unless he ends up playing more of a role of things than he currently does

the eliminated contestants get revived at the end btw. but then they immediately get hit with the fact that they're gonna have to go through all of this shit again because satchel is now obsessed with proving that they can do it (host the game show) better than tangram ever did

i don't know what satchel does but they end up going through some kind of fucked up transformation reminiscent of tangram, though it's origami this time

**prefacing this with an apology: I've been super busy lately and haven't had the chance to write a post about books in a while. FEAR NOT - I am still reading like crazy. It'll take a bit for me to remember how I felt about the books and my posts might be a little short for the interim.**

So I guess Celaena is just out here in Wendlyn now? And she's being trained by hottie Rowan who is ~definitely not~ related to her

...coolcoolcool well he's tatted, tan, and broody so sign me the f*ck up. 🥵 Rowan and Celaena/Aelin start getting to know each other, share their dark twisty stories, and establish that they may or may not be mates?? Enter the Valg, skinwalkers, and several creepy crawly beasts. Including Maeve, who seems like a cocky assh*le frankly. It 🔥warmed🔥my heart (ha get it) when Celaena/Aelin stomped Maeve's cocky ass down and freed Rowan from his blood oath. The tension between Aelin and Rowan has me wiggling in my seat as I'm listening to the audiobook y'all. I am ready to explode.

Dorian and Chaol are trying to hold down the fort while the King is still doing evil sh*t and they start becoming friends with Aedion, who is Aelin's cousin. TBH when SJM introduced Aedion, I was confused. He was sooo obsessed with Aelin it almost made me believe he was incestuously in love with her? Turns out, it's not the case. He is, like Dorian, a slut however. No shame in slutting it out, just calling it how it is.

Speaking of Dorian, he randomly decides he has recognized this healer who has been right in front of him for years?

Get it Sorscha girl. Too bad she doesn't even get to 2nd base before the King goes apesh*t and imprisons Dorian, who gets possessed by a Valg prince.

By the end of the book, Aelin has returned to Rifthold to follow up with Chaol, Arobyn, Dorian, and the King. She's a sneaky little bugger, changing her appearance to look like Arobyn and using fake names.

ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PLANET (seemingly), Manon Blackbeak enters the scene. Manon is mommy af. The iron teeth, iron nails, cutthroat nature of the Ironteeth witch clans is so f*cking badass. They are recruited by the Duke/King to drive the carefully bred wyverns ahead of whatever war is being planned. And some of the witches are forced to breed 🤮 more valg?

Also, enter sad, depressing Elide Lochan who is just...around. Apparently Manon takes an interest in Elide. Is this some girl power bond? Whatever the case, they team up with Caltain to destroy Morath and let the witches+Elide scape this weird prison they ended up in.

Sorscha

LISTENNNNNNNNNN I'm a sucker for a HIPAA-compliant healthcare worker. Sorscha is clearly meant for her line of work. But DAMN is she thirsty for Dorian and such a coward!! The whole time I'm listening to the book, I was shouting in frustration just waiting for her to smoosh her face to any part of him! 2/10 because she does good shit and we're thankful for her, but she's boring, docile, and doesn't stand up for her own needs/wants.

Manon Blackbeak

Mommy? Sorry. Mommy?? Sorry. Hot DAMN Manon is a firecracker. She is the *it* girl of the ironteeth witches. F*cking ruthless, but by the time Caltain explodes her moral compass is starting to shine through her bloodthirsty exterior. Does her affinity for Abraxos not say it all? I mean, c'mon. Abraxos is a poor abused bb who is out for blood, but is addicted to sniffing wildflowers?! Manon is a softie too, on the inside. Deeeeep deep inside, but still there. 500000/10 LOVE. Cannot wait to see if/when she encounters Aelin.

Aedion Ashryver

I don't know why I feel so gross saying this, but 🥵🌶️ I wish Aderlan's whore would show me why he has such a reputation. Actually, I know why it feels gross -- he's a loyal little brother character. But still, Aedion can practice fertilizing me any day. I love his cocky mask he puts on to fly under the radar while maintaining this reputation that keeps him ON the radar at all when it comes to Rifthold's politics. Between that and his reputation as an absolute beast on the battlefield, he's a solid 7/10.

Rowan Whitethorn

Ex-f*cking-use me??? I'm sorry, my panties have spontaneously evaporated. Hottie, ex-almost-father, dominant, all-knowing, powerful fae male ROWAN *cough*daddy*cough*. He has this wonderful game of push and pull with Celaena/Aelin while they're training that keeps me coming back for more (and her too). Clearly, Rowan and Aelin are meant for each other. And the moment he takes the blood oath for Aelin IN FRONT OF MAEVE!!!! F*ck off. I'm done. Dead. Rowan wins. 10000/10.

10/10 would definitely recommend this one. Heir of Fire is where the TOG series plot starts to ramp up, in my opinion. So many more major characters are introduced, their relationships are progressing, and the diversity in SJM's fictional universe continues expanding. There's flirting, killing, threatening, disappointment, pining, brooding, groveling, GAH. I'm sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see who is going to live/die, develop powers or not!
