Thought it may be late, a small treat for the second anniversary of Monsters and Magic: the WIPs for the Investigation Team

I originally had Yu's al most completed, then I decided try and get everyone else settled all at once, hence why they're all sketches.

A small heads-up, though, there will be two parters in Yukiko's, Rise's and Teddie's cases. They aren't drawn yet, but when I get around to posting time, they will be.

1/25 Kamuiden and Post War Manga

I was immediately shocked by the level of violence in Kamuiden. Of course manga spans all genres and themes but somehow even Attack on Titan didn't seem quite as brutal as this and even I was cringing a good bit over that one. Given that this manga was written in the wake of Japan's defeat in world war 2 it's not all that surprising I suppose for it to be so violent. Art tends to emulate real life so when people experienced brutality and innocent people/animals were killed, it naturally makes sense for that to seep into media as well. The comments by the main character that sometimes "a man only survives by risking his life" and that "success or failure... all will be decided in these short hours before dawn" also convey the sort of desperation present in Japan in the post war era.

Post war manga as a whole was most notable as a sort of "cheap entertainment" for a mentally and physically exhausted Japan. In the immediate post war picture card shows and storytelling proliferated before rental manga became more popular. Later around 1960, Tastumi Yoshihiro coined term gekiga to describe a newer genre of more serious themed adult manga with more serious themes like society and politics. In Osaka there was this boom of akabon manga printed in red ink that grew to be tremendously popular as well. Over time the gekiga style greatly differed from the disney-esque art style increasingly popular in children's manga. The varying ways in which managa and other visual media became prolific in Japanese society in the post war makes it clear to see both adults and children both sought out means of entertainment to almost cope with the challenges they were facing.

I really think that Kotaro's VA (Mamoru Miyano) really brought the character to life in a way I don't think would be possible otherwise. I also don't think that the show would be nearly as enjoyable without him.
