Thought it may be late, a small treat for the second anniversary of Monsters and Magic: the WIPs for the Investigation Team

I originally had Yu's al most completed, then I decided try and get everyone else settled all at once, hence why they're all sketches.

A small heads-up, though, there will be two parters in Yukiko's, Rise's and Teddie's cases. They aren't drawn yet, but when I get around to posting time, they will be.

sososo tastumi is the archivist in this with the rest of alkaloid as assistants, mayoi fitting into a similar role to martin being partially aligned with the dark then the lonely. Hiiro joins the institute to look for rinne who has somehow gotten mixed up with the entities probably the slaughter or the lightless flame (tim with 100% less rage), aira probably joined out of a deep passion for the supernatural and such. if we follow the tma storyline i feel like tatsumi wouldnt get as paranoid as jon gets but gets just a shut in refusing to let any of the others do anything in the processes fucking up his health and just straining all the relations in the archives. eeuu if i get further in its probably going to get out of hand so other characters.

kaname and tatsumi have a similar relation to enstars canon, now if the HiMERU situation is just kaname getting replaced by the NotThem or just that himeru got align to the stranger before learning about kaname. jun probably joins the institute later on not really of his own volition if kaname is still alive at this point they re probably hanging out to dating euuuuu meru is probably fucking with that relationship just by existing. the rest of eden is probably there nagisa touched by the end makes sense to me. ibara could fill the role of elias bouchard there is angst and paranoia factor in that with [redacted for spoiler reasons]

1/25 Kamuiden and Post War Manga

I was immediately shocked by the level of violence in Kamuiden. Of course manga spans all genres and themes but somehow even Attack on Titan didn't seem quite as brutal as this and even I was cringing a good bit over that one. Given that this manga was written in the wake of Japan's defeat in world war 2 it's not all that surprising I suppose for it to be so violent. Art tends to emulate real life so when people experienced brutality and innocent people/animals were killed, it naturally makes sense for that to seep into media as well. The comments by the main character that sometimes "a man only survives by risking his life" and that "success or failure... all will be decided in these short hours before dawn" also convey the sort of desperation present in Japan in the post war era.

Post war manga as a whole was most notable as a sort of "cheap entertainment" for a mentally and physically exhausted Japan. In the immediate post war picture card shows and storytelling proliferated before rental manga became more popular. Later around 1960, Tastumi Yoshihiro coined term gekiga to describe a newer genre of more serious themed adult manga with more serious themes like society and politics. In Osaka there was this boom of akabon manga printed in red ink that grew to be tremendously popular as well. Over time the gekiga style greatly differed from the disney-esque art style increasingly popular in children's manga. The varying ways in which managa and other visual media became prolific in Japanese society in the post war makes it clear to see both adults and children both sought out means of entertainment to almost cope with the challenges they were facing.

Ah, did he make it worse...? Still, he hates seeing her push herself so hard, he wants to get what he's saying through. What would Senpai say...?

"Fine, you're fine then, so we finish the case, but then what? You're just not gunna relax for a while or do what we've all had to do and come to terms with our own bullshit?" He's trying to be motivational, but despite mimicing their leader to the best of his ability it definitely has that Kanji 'charm'. The whole speech is full of minor hand and arm movements as he makes himself not look away. "You just gunna ignore everything you've been through and keep letting that shadow bastard win? Or just gunna leave for a better case to deal with? You're just gunna hurt yourself eventually, let us just do somethin' to ease it off for a while."

She doesn’t know how to respond once again, so she doesn’t, because there’s no sense in arguing with him about a lot of things. It’s the way that he’s insistent that she has to feel better somehow that grates her gears. Who cares if she’s being harsh on herself? What’s important is to see a job through to the end. What comes next is none of their business.

“I don’t need to do any of that. I’m fine.” Her fists clench, saying she isn’t, but like hell she would admit it. “We have to go. Now. The longer we dawdle, the less time we have to make things right.” That’s what detectives need to do. Set things right, then leave when no longer needed.

I really think that Kotaro's VA (Mamoru Miyano) really brought the character to life in a way I don't think would be possible otherwise. I also don't think that the show would be nearly as enjoyable without him.
