Today’s Outsider is THE ESOTERICIST, a card I designed and painted last month, inspired by the French Occultist and Astrologer EUDES PICARD who developed his own system for the Tarot in 1909, the same year the Rider-Waite deck was released. Arthur Waite dismissed Picard’s tarot as completely irrelevant, probably because Picard was an Outsider with ideas of his own. ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Picard’s system is still used in Spanish tarot decks, including the El Gran Tarot Esoterico by Maritxu Guler. An obscure deck called the Thompson-Leng is a gorgeous mish-mash of both the Waite and Picard systems that was given away by Women’s Magazine. ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣What would this card say to you in a reading?⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Here’s a quote from Picard that serves as a meditation on the 5 OF ROSES:⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣“Let us now notice the detail of the ornamentations which decorate the cards. 💘 💔 Now that Valentine’s Day is over, I decided to ask the Outsider Tarot very simply, “What is Valentine’s Day?” ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣The ACE OF BOTTLES was the first card I drew, followed by THE GHOST CAR (Chariot) and the WHEEL of Fortune. An ace + 2 major arcana = very powerful. The tarot really has something to say — and loudly!⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣The ACE of BOTTLES is a reminder that Valentine’s day is what we make of it. It is a bottle that can give shape to love, sadness, fun, loneliness, reading a good book, regret, sensational sex, anything that the element of water and the suit of bottles represents.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣THE GHOST CAR shows a shopping plaza which brings to mind the commercial/capitalist backdrop of this holiday, but the red chair on top of the mysterious car shrouded in asphalt is a reminder, again, that we can transcend the Hallmark-ization of this “holiday” if we go deeper and make it more personal.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣The WHEEL OF FORTUNE is a good reminder to step back. A 5-CARD EVERY DAY SPREAD (described in an older post) with the Outsider Tarot. Very powerful!! ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Top row = Energy moving into the day, >> The present moment >> Flow of energy into the future. This flow reading is a bit different than past present future as it allows for personal agency and choice.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Bottom row = Advice.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Two very important major arcana appear on the left: 6. THE RUNAWAYS (lovers) & 14. TEMPERANCE. ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣These two cards are representative of Gemini and Sagittarius, air and fire opposites on the zodiac wheel, where south and north nodes are exalted. The Outsider of the day is the beautifully inspirational writer and Tarot Grandmaster Rachel Pollack! On Saturday I had the special honor of having dinner with Rachel who is holding up the 2 of Bottles from the Outsider Tarot which of course is her card! ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣The artwork depicts Rachel and fellow tarot grandmaster Eden Grey doing a reading together, discovering the secrets of the unknown. ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Rachel requested a print of the artwork and it was my pleasure to oblige! Rachel’s quintessential book on the tarot, The 78 Degrees of Wisdom has a new edition released just last year. I highly recommend it to everyone interested in the tarot!
