By the Way, I’m Going Out Tonight

TK is having second thoughts. It’s cold and windy and there are like ten people in line in front of him. The short sleeve button down was definitely a mistake. It’s just. He looks really good in it. Fucking winter. Fucking Texas. TK shoves his hands in his pockets and bounces on his toes.

The doorman studies his ID and then TK’s face twice before waving him through. And then he’s finally inside Barbarellas.

Pink and yellow spotlights flash around the room and the 80’s pop is momentarily deafening. It has to be at least twenty degrees warmer in here. This is exactly what he came for. TK squares his shoulders and heads to the dance floor.

Brightly dressed people are pressed together from the DJ’s stage to the back wall of booths. They’re swaying and jumping and squealing with laughter. Drinks slosh over plastic cups as fishnet-gloved hands wave in the air. TK smiles as he leans against a table and looks for the best place to join in.

“Hi,” he hears just behind his left shoulder.

TK stops dead in the doorway, suddenly overwhelmed by the sight of Carlos in the hospital bed.

His eyes are closed and his head is tipped toward the window, the fading light catching on his lashes and curls, bathing him in an ethereal glow.

He looks like an angel. He almost was one. TK has been doing this job for a long time. People use the word miracle far too often for his liking. It’s luck. It’s good training. It’s medicine, science and timing.

But he pressed his fingers to Carlos’ jaw and felt nothing one moment and the next Carlos was alive, wide eyed and panicked but breathing on his own with his head pounding in his chest. 

That’s more than being at the right place at the right time. It’s more than proper CPR technique and NARCAN.

It’s fate and love and divine intervention.

Three years ago TK died on a cold apartment floor in New York City. Today the love of his life is only a few feet away, a little bruised and battered, but alive and warm waiting for him to return.

If that’s not a miracle, TK doesn’t know what is.
