Thank you for the tags @carlos-in-glasses @cold-blooded-jelly-doughnut @reyesstrand looking at my WIPs and was reminded of this Coffee Shop AU I started months ago. Maybe I'll slip back into it and start writing it again...

The smell of coffee slowly fills the air as more of the delicious, liquid gold fills the pot.

Standing in front of the coffee pot is an attractive man around 27, with soft brown skin, messy dark curls, and a crease between his brown eyes that was at least a mile deep. He’s slouched against the counter, chin rested in his hands as he stares intently at the coffee pot, like it holds all the answers to his life questions.

“You know staring at it won’t make it brew any faster.”

He jumps, startled by the voice breaking through the nearly silent space, and lifts his head, turning in the direction of the voice. Leaning against the door frame is another attractive man with pale white skin, messy brain hair, and blue eyes that are shining with mischief. He pushes off the door frame and walks further into the room, joining the other by the coffee pot.

“Why are you looking at it so hard?” The man asks, raising an eyebrow. “It’s just coffee brewing, nothing special.”

The other man shrugs, “I don’t know. Just thinking about life and how I’m not sure I want to do this anymore.”

“You’re the best in the business, though. You could break out onto your own and dominate the interior design business.”

“I know, but it’s not fun anymore. All anyone wants is gray walls and minimalist designs. There’s no creativity in it anymore. Nothing that excites me.”

“If you want excitement, go down to The Three Ponies and buy a lap dance from one of the twinks there, don’t go looking for another job.”

The coffee stops brewing and the man by the pot reaches for it, pouring himself a cup. He adds a splash of cream and a teaspoon of sugar, stirring it until his coffee turns a light brown.

“Maybe a new job is just what I need.”

❄️ Day 1 - The Wingman ❄️

🎁 Today's drabble is dedicated to @eclectic-sassycoweyes!

Summary: While TK is babysitting Jonah, he meets a really sweet barista!

Word count: 765

Jonah screams from his stroller as TK pushes him and TK only feels more and more embarrassed as he backs them into Starbucks. Especially considering everyone sitting in the coffee shop looks cozy in their festive sweaters, with their holiday shopping in bags at their feet. 

“Shh,” he coos, “You’re okay, Jo-Jo, you’re okay.”

Jonah only continues to cry and TK is officially getting looks from the other patrons. He really needs his caffeine fix because toddlers are exhausting and TK is certain he looks as frazzled as he feels.

“Hi,” he says when he finally gets to the counter, after waiting in line and trying to console Jonah the entire time. He rolls the stroller back and forth in a rocking motion even as Jonah keeps wailing. “I’m so sorry about him...We passed a park on the way here, I said no, it was a whole thing.”

The barista leans forward across the counter and smiles down at Jonah in his stroller—which actually manages to get the toddler to stop crying out of his curiosity at the new face smiling down at him—before looking back up at TK. TK’s breath catches as warm, brown eyes turn on him. “Your son’s really cute,” the man–Carlos, judging by his name tag–says.

“He’s actually my baby brother,” TK laughs awkwardly. He’s not sure why he’s quick to clarify as he stares at the handsome barista. Usually he just accepts it when people assume Jonah’s his kid because it’s not worth explaining otherwise to strangers he’ll never cross paths with again. 

“You have nothing to be embarrassed about,” Carlos smiles at TK. “It’s way too cold for the park today and he’s just being a kid. You’re doing a good job looking out for him.”

“Thanks,” TK laughs. “I’m just babysitting but I really did need to hear that today.”

“What can I get you? I’ll make it a venti at no extra charge,” Carlos’s smile is warm and TK sort of wants to melt in it as he grabs a plastic cup and holds up a sharpie, poised and ready to take TK’s order. 

“That is incredibly sweet of you, thank you. I’ll have an iced gingerbread latte with a double shot of espresso and gingerbread cold foam please,” TK says with a grateful smile. “And a tall hot chocolate at kid’s temp for this little guy.”

“And your name?” Carlos raises an eyebrow as he glances back at TK, his bottom lip drawn up between his teeth.

“TK.”

“TK,” Carlos repeats like he’s swirling TK’s name in his mouth like a flavorful wine. “That’s nice.”

“Thank you,” TK breathes, so completely lost in the barista’s eyes. 

He pays for their drinks and rolls Jonah forward to the end of the bar and finds a free table where he can sit and face Jonah. 

“I got you a hot chocolate, buddy, are you excited about that?” 

Jonah begins to bounce excitedly in his seat with a happy clap.

A few minutes later, the handsome barista personally delivers their drinks to them. 

“Oh my god, this is so sweet of you,” TK gushes. “Seriously, you didn’t have to do that.”

“It’s my pleasure,” Carlos shakes his head with a tiny smile. “How old is he?”

“He’s two,” TK says, “probably explains a bit of the tantrum.”

“Oh, who doesn’t wish they could still throw tantrums and get away with it?” Carlos chuckles. “Seriously, he’s fine. He’s very cute…not unlike his big brother.”

TK practically chokes on his coffee as Carlos winks at him and slinks off, back towards the counter. Suddenly, something on TK’s cup catches his eye. 

In addition to TK’s name and order, a number has been written on the cup with a smiley face and a, “text me! -Carlos.”

TK’s eyes shoot straight up, back to the barista, looking smug as he steams milk behind the counter. He quickly types the number into his phone and texts: do you always give your number out to guys you meet at work?

TK watches Carlos grin as he discreetly checks his watch and reads the message from TK flashing across it. A few minutes later, TK gets a text back: Only when they’re really cute.

TK’s head whips up and Carlos smirks as he catches his gaze, winking at TK. TK just bites his lip. He thinks this barista might just hopefully be the death of him.

“Hey little brother, thank you for being the best wingman ever,” TK chuckles quietly, shaking his head. Jonah just stares curiously at TK while he drinks his hot chocolate.

After a long and tiring shift with way too many back to back calls, most of them being absolutely ridiculous, TK pushes open the door to Lou’s Coffee, his favorite coffee shop, and inhales the smell of freshly roasted coffee beans that never fails to put a smile on his face.

I haven’t opened the doc since July 10th 🙈 and I haven’t written a single word since the beginning of September. Let’s hope the muse finds me again at some point 🫠

2024 fic round up!

I wrote 20 fics this year, which (for me) isn't all that much - despite starting and partially writing at least twice that. I've had the year from hell in more ways than one (especially the last 6 months) but fandom has and always will be a nice escapism!

Thanks to everyone that's commented on my fics in some way, I promise I'm going to try be less awkward and actually reply to your comments instead of just keeping the notification emails in my inbox like a dragon hoarding gold.

I mostly wrote bucktommy/911 this year (what can I say, that fingers under the chin kiss really did it for me) and if TPTB @ abc have any sense they'll bring Lou/Tommy back in the second half of the season!

Though the tarlos secret santa did sort of reawaken my love for Tarlos, so let's see if I can actually finish some of the fics I started for them in the new year.

1. How many works do you have an AO3? 92

2. What's your total AO3 word count? 678,345 but that includes a bunch of collabs and co-written fics so not all of those words are mine. I never tracked my actual word count, but at a guess I'd say at least 150,000 of those words aren't my own

3. What fandoms do you write for? Red, White & Royal Blue, 911 Lone Star and, theoretically, Schitt's Creek although it's been a very long time since I've written any SC fic.

The only fic(let) I've ever written with an angsty(ish) ending hasn't been published and I'm not sure it ever will, but it's the result of @howtosingit saying something like, "whatever you do, don't imagine that the Huntington's test went the other way and the ending of Queen Charlotte."

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? all of them? idk they all have happy endings, maybe What, like it's hard? (obligatory A/N to say do not read that fic if you haven't read to the victor, the spoils first, please.)

8. Do you get hate on fics? It's not a regular thing, thankfully.

9. Do you write smut? lol (that's a yes).

Oh actually! Lil bit of railmedaddy lore: when I first started writing SC fic and chose my ao3 name (which was inspired by Dan Levy's appearance on SNL), it was meant to be a joke because railmedaddy was never ever going to write smut, didn't think she'd be capable of ever doing that, actually. That lasted all of ... maybe 6 months.

10. Do you write crossovers? The closest I've ever come is this snippet in response to an ask about how and where David, Patrick, Alex, Henry, Carlos and TK might meet.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of, I hope not!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! Make the Yuletide Gay (Tarlos) was translated into simplified Chinese. I was honoured that anyone would want to go to the trouble of doing that!

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I'm not sure that there's anything in actual WIP form with words on the page that I both want to finish and don't think I will? There are a lot of ideas that I'd like to write but don't think will ever actually happen.

16. What are your writing strengths? Someone tell me, please. Thinking about comments on my fics and the things that I actually like writing (I think my writing is better when I'm really enjoying it), it's probably banter and smut with feelings.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? World building, pretty metaphors and similes. I think my writing is repetitive so don't look too closely, especially if you read my fics in more than one fandom.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? If it's in character, then why not? The times I have included substantial Spanish dialogue, I have a native Spanish speaker look over it and help with translations because I don't want to rely on google translate.

The collabs with Lola I linked ^^, The Grindr Toolbox: A Guide to Getting Nailed series is something that I had so much fun with and I'm very proud of, who am i if i can't carry it all aka June fic which I poured my heart and soul into, I don't think there's any other fic I've written that has so much of myself in it, this year i will fall which is my RWRB Hallmark Christmas fic.

Hello and happy August! Since August is typically the back to school month for most schools, I thought it would be fun to do a "back to school" theme! Below are the rules and several prompts! Meet Cute - both go to the same coffee shop to study for an upcoming exam and accidently get the other's coffee order

TK the lead singer of a band that travels around to different colleges. Carlos attends one of his shows.

Enemies to lovers - TK and Carlos are roommates who hate each other.

"I don't want to be here, my friend made me come."

Summer Fling - TK and Carlos meet over the summer during a vacation trip. They part ways, thinking that they'll never see each other again only to see each other a few weeks later at the same college. Was it just a summer fling or something more?

Carlos and TK are both professors that teach at the same college. Nobody knows that they're secretly dating.

"I need someone to pose for my art finale, and I want it to be you."

After Gabriel's death, Carlos decides to leave the police life behind and go back to school to do something else.

Carlos works in the college library and TK goes there pretending to study but really it's so he can stare at Carlos.

Carlos and TK take their kids back to school shopping

Carlos works at the college radio station and he keeps playing songs that TK likes to try and impress him.

Childhood best friends who reconnect at college

Mutual pinning - TK and Carlos both like each other, but think the other doesn't and doesn't want to bring it up because they don't want to ruin the friendship.

Instead of following in his father's footsteps, TK decides to go to college instead of being a firefighter. There he meets Carlos, who's decided to take a different path too.

RA Carlos Reyes who always has to get on TK Strand for being the loudest person in the dorm.

TK and Carlos are roommates, one of them walks in on the other masterbating.

☆ - happy headcanon (Yours To Keep, Yours To Lose)

Grace wins the next election. It’s a hard fought victory, like they all seem to be these days, but for TK it feels like the sweetest. Carlos never got a job with the Vega administration. Instead he quietly worked on making his own name. The good thing about DC is that there’s always a new scandal or controversy to flood the news cycle. His name doesn’t stay in the papers as a high profile escort for long. He works for people he respects and can guide him down the right path. He talks to Gwyn a lot. He does some pro bono work. Once Grace wins he sits down for an interview and leaves with a job. By that time they’re living together in Carlos’ beautiful Georgetown loft and they take the train into work together every morning. It’s always crowded and they always end up offering their seats to someone who needs them. Carlos holds onto the rail that runs along the top of the trail and TK holds onto the strap of Carlos’ bag that falls across his chest. They don’t work in the same section of the White House so they say their goodbyes after the security checkpoint. Sometimes they have lunch together, sometimes they’re too busy. Carlos doesn’t let TK pull all-nighters anymore. He comes to collect him at the end of the day—occasionally giving him a one to two hour grace period depending on the circumstances—packs up his work, gets him bundled up in the winter months, and walks him out to the train station. They don’t talk about work, but they do talk about the new coffee shop that opened around the corner and their plans for the weekend. TK wants to sleep in, Carlos wants to go to the farmer’s market. They both know that TK will win out when he stretches his arms above his head and arches his back and Carlos will hover in the bedroom doorway, resolve crumbling, before climbing back into bed with him.

I am really weird with AU fics. If I see a fic where TK is a rockstar and Carlos is his bodyguard I’m like nope. I can’t get into fics that change canon. It’s not Tarlos to me. But I do enjoy fics that maintain canon but do a new situations/story. Like Tarlos with all the canon history take a trip to New York or honeymoon fics. Or stories between episodes/ seasons.

I feel like I’m in the minority as AUs seem really popular. It’s why your missing moments fic is like crack to me

You know what I used to be like that too. Not in this fandom but years ago I used to hate AUs, I used to feel like they were just people writing original fiction where the characters were completely unrecognizable and called them Dean and Cas (or whoever) to get people to read it. I didn't used to understand at all why people would want to see characters be different people. I have obviously come around to them haha, I still tend to gravitate more towards canon compliant fics but AUs are SO much fun to write. You get to be so creative. And I definitely now see the appeal of the concept of an AU being "what if these two were such soulmates that they would find each other in any universe" or the sort of chaos theory idea of "one tiny thing being different can change the entire trajectory of someone's life, so would TK and Carlos still find each other if one thing had been different when they were 11 years old and they became actors or coffee shop owners or acrobats?"

It took me a while to pick mostly because I have 130 Lone Star fics alone, but I tried to go with the ones I really, truly love. Which was hard because I loving a fic a requirement for it being posted at all. But I managed to select 5, eventually.

would've loved you for a lifetime

Prompt: Characters are secretly married and one of them is hurt at work ----- The story of how TK and Carlos came together, and how they almost missed out on their future before it even got a chance to start.

This is a favorite because I really think that some of the descriptions are closer to poetry than any actual poetry that I've ever tried to write. It was also the first time I ever worked with a non-linear narrative, which is a technique I love. The story of TK and Carlos secretly getting married was fun to piece together and reveal in pieces. When it comes to the actual language used this is still probably my favorite thing I have ever written.

I am not what you planned

Dr. Carlos Reyes can’t stand the newest paramedic at the 126. He’s cocky, impulsive, abrasive, and — while admittedly very good at his job — a thorn in his side. Paramedic TK Strand feels the same: he can’t seem to go anywhere in this damn city without someone singing the praises of the young, talented local-boy-turned-doctor. But as time passes some of the bravado fades and their true natures are revealed. Slowly they each start to realize that maybe the other isn’t as bad as they once thought and that maybe — just maybe — there is much more to them than meets the eye.  ---- aka the Dr. Reyes/Paramedic Strand Enemies to Lovers AU

Each of my AUs has a special place in my heart (especially the teacher AU, which I almost picked instead) but writing this one was such an experience, and writing the enemies part of this fic was probably some of the most fun I've ever had while writing. I don't think I'll ever be over this fic, truly.

the truth is stranger than all my dreams

Marjan likes to think that she’s confident, that she can take on anything. But things are showing her that she may not know herself as well as she thinks and that the future can be a scary thing. ----- A Marjan centric 2x04 Coda

Outside of tarlos and Owen, my favorite character to write about is Marjan. Because she is my absolute favorite, after all. But this one always sticks out to me because after the whole thing with Salim what struck me most was the unexpected uncertain future she was suddenly faced with, which I would imagine would feel both liberating and absolutely terrifying. So I wanted to explore that and I am pleased with how it came out.

why can't I hold on?

There is nothing in the world Gwyn Morgan loves more than her children. Loving them has never been hard, but having to stand aside as life took its toll? That was something else entirely—especially when it came to her oldest.  Or, 5 times Gwyn feared for her oldest son, and the one time she knew he would be okay 

My Gwyn fic, aka one of only two fics that have ever made me cry while writing. I love Gwyn so much, and I started writing this fic as soon as she was mentioned in the show. I originally paused on it to wait until we had a better feel for her as a character and ultimately didn't finish it until they killed her, which added a whole other dimension to the writing of this. I vividly remember working on this fic while sitting at my neighborhood coffee shop as Amen came on my shuffle. I had to leave because I started crying. But, regardless of the emotional devastation, I really enjoyed filling in some blanks and accidentally creating an origin story for the coma cookies. And I love her even more after writing this (I'm still not over what they did to her, btw)

the stain you can't wash out

In Owen’s experience, guilt went hand in hand with grief. — An(other) Owen character study that wouldn’t leave me alone after 3x16

The Owen grief fic (or one of them, at least). One of the reasons I like this one is the title, which came from a poem I attempted to write and failed. But mostly it's because Owen Strand is a mess and I love digging around inside his mind. I can't quite explain why I am so fascinated by writing fics by him but I think it has something to do with the fact that I see him as an actually fascinating character that they just don't use to his full potential. There could be some great stories told with the things they have already given the character, but they consistently make the stupidest choices when it comes to him. So I love this fic because I enjoyed reexamining his character in the light of learning about his dead brother and extrapolating how that effected him and informed everything he did from that point forward and how he masks his grief with his job, and how his work is what keeps him from going insane as it feels like penance that he is still paying all these years later. I enjoyed looking at all the parts of his life (and sketching out my idea for his first meeting with Gwyn) even if writing about his experience on 9/11 was intense.

17. Describe a fic that is still in the ‘ideas’ stage.

This is actually one I came up with yesterday that @cold-blooded-jelly-doughnut has encouraged and essentially it's Long Distance Tarlos 👀. Basically they both live in different places TK in New York and Carlos in Austin and have to go through making things work when they're not in the same state.

I also have a coffee shop au, sports au, and message board fic mapped out that I need to sit down and write I have all the ideas written down but haven't started writing them yet.

I do have one unpublished Tarlos ficlet that's kind of a Queen Charlotte inspired future fic that is the saddest thing I've ever written which is the result of @howtosingit saying "whatever you do, don't think about X" which of course meant that I did and I wrote it in a fever dream, cried then buried it in my gdocs.

yes and I love it! I've done collabs where we each write a chapter, one where we each wrote a chapter and then fully co-wrote the final chapter, a full co-write with @welcometololaland (that ended up morphing into each of us alternating chapters), and I'm in the process of another co-write with Lola atm.

All time favorite ship?

What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I don't like to say never, but probably the SC paint & sip au

What are your writing strengths?

based on the comments I get - smut with feelings, banter/dialogue, characterisation

What are your writing weaknesses?

World building, pretty metaphors, I'm far too fond of run on sentences to the point where if I was beta reading my own writing there are SO MANY sentences that need to be cut down so that the reader can breathe.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

If it fits the character, I love it! I generally ask a native speaker to help me with translations for accuracy
