JUSTICE FOR SUSANNE!!!
Kunze the bootleg supporter ftw: link
/
Mr. Kunze, does it annoy you that there are so many posts on youtube with excerpts from your musicals (some of them filmed secretly), or do you consider them good publicity for your shows?
No, I'm actually pleased about that. The quality of the YouTube flashes is so low that I don't see it as competition to going to the theater. I rather think the recordings arouse curiosity. It's still forbidden, of course.

i've been wanting to get back properly into posting european musical content for ages, i've just been really busy and on-and-off sick for the last couple years. and i've become much more interested in archiving content rather than just finding it and having my own little hoard.
so anyway hi i'm wondering if there's an interest in me archiving clips for musicals. what i mean is not bootlegs or proshots, but interviews, tv promos, trailers, behind the scenes, basically any official videos for a musical that isn't an actual full recording of the musical. i'd put these up on archive.org and group them by musical.
i've got so many clips of musicals like tanz der vampire that i collect to make gifs and video edits from and on multiple occasions people have asked where i got the clip from, and sometimes the clip has been deleted from the web after i found it, sometimes its on a website that you have to make an account for and you're not comfortable doing that. so. yeah. let me know if you'd be interested and i can sort through all my clips and get them on the archive. and try and update them when i can.
so, i guess i can make this a poll rather than ask for people to reply to the post:
#hey euro musical fandom im still here i wanna comee bacckk#european musicals#tanz der vampire#europeanmusicals#elisabeth das musical#rebecca das musical#rebecca the musical#retj#romeo et juliette#mozart l'opera rock

Watched two videos of Tanz der Vampire. One was a proshot, the other was a bootleg. Overall, the bootleg was better; whoever made it was good with the camera and was able to catch most of the action. They knew when to zoom in and out and switch to someone else. And in the one case where the camera was focused on the off-action, they (or someone) added an insert showing the main action. Also English subtitles was nice.
By comparison, the proshot had fuzzy visual quality and the sound was distorted. And there were times when the cameras were focused on someone while something was between them and the camera. It was also reluctant to show certain effects, like the snow projections on the scrim. Small gripe, but since the proshot was on YouTube, Act two was split in half (probably to avoid a copyright strike). And no subtitles.
On the other hand, it was nice to see the performances of the people on the soundtrack I’d been listening to. There were a couple numbers I thought were done better in the proshot, but the bootleg had an added song about halfway through Act 1, which was pretty cool.

Tanz der Vampire March 5th 2023
Um holy fuck???? Wouldn’t change a thing 12/10, seeing this show live after 6 years of subsisting off of bootlegs. It’s completely different seeing it live.
Act one, phenomenal, I got jumped scared by Krolock, also got a side eye and a smirk because I whipped around so fast once he was in the aisle and was smiling like an idiot.
The dancers were incredible black vampire put so much into it and also some fun little unexpected things from him. All the dancing was absolutely flawless from everyone else as well.
Magda was incredible, her fear leading up to her getting bit was palpable, was she was a vampire she was so cheeky!
I normally hate Chagal but he was so funny, like going to bite Magda, mocking her fear, and then realizing, oh fuck he’s a vampire. Weirdly charismatic, especially with Magda when they’re in a crypt. They were fun to see.
Herbert so so baby, tall as hell, very playful, also wonderful voice!
Alfred. What a cutie, I’m usually pretty meh on Alfred’s but I couldn’t stop smiling during Fur Sarah because he was so sweet and sincere.
Fun things
Alfred dropping on top of the coffin was a solid thunk so it was very funny
Krolock kept showing Sarah off after he bit her while carrying her, dipping her down to show her bite to the others. Krolock went to say something during Vor dem Schloss and was cut off by the professor, very funny, definitely being a playful asshole with the professor but delivered such a good and moving bit once it was just him and Alfred anything that was loud and big was followed by lines delivered so softly I couldn’t help but be entranced. On a spicy note, dear lord the growls, going to bite Sarah at the end of ToFi was, oof, held her close the entire time while touching her, almost had a kiss during ToFi as well. Gier was Heart breaking.
Rebecca was wonderful, definitely the wife tired of her husband’s wandering eye but still loved him dearly.
Wow look at that back to Krolock, filippo definitely has younger vibes as Krolock, gorgeous voice, went for it with adding riffs and having fun with it vocally, it works really well with everything he has going.
Kristen was fabulous as Sarah, definitely a favorite now. She’s so playful and sweet as Sarah, very clear voice, and beautiful on the high notes.
Froze at stage door, completely worth it though. Filippo was so kind, remembered my friend and I from when he walked through the aisle and took the time to talk with us.

People you'd like to know better
Tagged by @celluloidbroomcloset - thank you!
Three ships: Steed/Emma Castle/Beckett Tod/Rudolf (in some productions. It's complicated.)
First ship: I’m not even sure. Probably something from Star Trek: TNG when I was like 10, but I had a few different ships there and I don’t remember which came first.
Last song: Prohibition Way by The Punters
Currently Reading: The Virgin Cure, Ami McKay
Last film: I don't watch a whole lot of films, so I'm actually not sure. Let's call that Tanz der Vampire bootleg I watched last night a film, shall we?
Currently craving: Food from my favourite veggie restaurant, which is several provinces away from where I currently live. Sigh. No-pressure tagging: @fitzrove, @blorbinho, @jon-withnoh, @wenn-ich-tanzen-will, I think most of you did a similar one not long ago, so only if you feel like updating your lasts/currents. Also anyone else who wants to do this, tag - you're it.

Just remembered when I was researching the broadway production of tanz der vampire because I had just watched a bootleg and I needed to know what the hell happened and a bunch of articles came up that were like "woah, this vampire musical has a high-energy number about GARLIK isnt that so goofy and quirky you guys" and i dont even know why but it pissed me off so much because its like, no really?? Youre telling me the dark comedy musical about vampires has some kind of musical number, thats perhaps comedic in nature, about one of the more absurd vampire weaknesses? no way

Get to Know Me Better!
Tagged by: @sarcasticdolphin
Three ships: Will keep it in the Elisabeth fandom, since that is what my current fanfic and fandom focus is. Todolf (legit question: who in the Elisabeth fandom doesn't love reading Todolf fics?), SisiTod (a classic) and Smrtolf (Czech production Todolf my beloveds, but I'm counting it as different from Todolf, because Smrt just has vibes and characterization different enough from Tod for me to not really see them as the same character)
First ship: Eristine from PotO (oh, the good ol' tween days when I used to read and write PotO fanfiction on Wattpad)
Last song: Tanz der Vampire Act 2 Finale from the 2010 cast recording. A true dance banger
Last movie: Do bootlegs count? If yes, then TdV with Jan Kříž as Krolock (the man, the voice, the hands and the PRESENCE) and if not, the Czech movie Nedejte se, děvčata!
Currently watching: Some assorted ASMR on YouTube to help me fall asleep
Currently consuming: A eucalyptus candy for my throat
Currently craving: Nacho cheese tortilla chips. Those always hit
Not tagging anybody, do it if you'd like :)

Okay the moment i saw the words jim steinman i started making out with you op. But jim motherfucking steinman did go "hmm what if this song but vampires?" He had vamps on the brain the entire fucking time. What do you except from the man who reveres the story of Peter Pan?
This dude legit went imma make a nosferatu musical. Not a dracula musical, no no no. The bootleg knockoff movie of dracula that should have had all copies be destroyed cause of CopyRight Laws. Total eclipse of the Heart was written for this canned musical.
He later went, "Damn this is a good ass song. Dont want it to go to waste.....I'm working with bonnie tyler rn, maybe she should sing it." It became a mega hit.
Then years later Roman Polanski (yes i know i hate him too) and co went to jimmy to get him to write songs for polanskis musical adaptation of his movie The Fearless Vampire Killers or Parden me but your teeth are in my neck. So jimmy on a time crunch of like 2 months to write all the songs went "hmmmm i need a good big song for the vamp and virgin to sing in act 2. Maybe i could...nooooo..... I mean this is vienna afterall who would notice if i resuse this popular song i wrote but get it translated to german?" Everyone fucking noticed. But they didnt care cause it was a Banger and fit so well
Anyway Jimmy has a fucking track record as he took one of the songs written for this canceled batman the musical (yes there was almost a batman musical in the 90s, keep up) and had his bro Meat sing it on Bat out of Hell 3. The song is In the Land of the Pig the Butcher is King. Jimmy also had Meat sing Carpe Noctem from Tanz der Vampire on the album. In Jimmy's defense he had Health Problems and couldnt complete the album so Mr Loaf had another song writter come in to write addition songs for it.
But fear not! For In The Land of The Pigs, The Butcher is King did make it to The Stage in Jimmys "Bat out of Hell" the Musical or as I like to call it, "Rock n Roll Peter Pan but everyone is Really Horny". Then it got cut from the show. Anyway absolute Banger
God i fucking love jim steinman
okay so picture this.
You're a man named Jim Steinman. You are one of the most prolific songwriters of the 80s. In your spirit, output and essence, you are eternally popping a wheelie on a motorcycle while a hot half-naked woman clings to you and bats wheel in the sky above.
You wrote a song in which Meatloaf plays a hideously disfigured hunk who steals a nubile lady back to his crumbling manor and introduces her to the pleasures of magic lesbian group sex.
You wrote a song in which Celine Dion sings as Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights, dancing with Cathy's corpse on a beach in the moonlight; a scene which you, Jim Steinman, believe should have been in the book. (The moors of Wuthering Heights are landlocked, but you, Jim Steinman, are too fucking real to care about that.)
You wrote the song for the opening scene of the movie Streets of Fire, in which evil leatherdaddy Willem Dafoe leads his malefic motorcycle crew into a concert to abduct Diane Lane while she's wearing a skintight satin jumpsuit.
You wrote a song in which Bonnie Tyler wanders a haunted boarding school as literal demon twinks gyrate at her out of the fog.
There is no peak of goth camp that you, Jim Steinman, have not summited, no horny energy you have not tapped. They say that Alexander the Great wept when he saw there were no more worlds to conquer. But you, Jim Steinman, are not Alexander the Great. You, Jim Steinman, are better. You, Jim Steinman, have vision.
You take your most successful song, the song everyone knows, the most big-haired, white dress, gothic arches, doves flying, possessed choir boys chanting, bombastic song you have, and think: what if this, but with vampires.
And so you change the lyrics to be about death and infinity and a powerful bloodsucking lord seducing a girl who is ALL ABOUT IT, and then toss off a whole musical for this song to be the centerpiece to, and the musical is bad but it's also a weird hit that's been staged in fourteen countries and revived seven times, because nothing has ever whipped as campily, as ridiculously, as perfectly as this:
youtube
It never takes off in America. A prophet is without honor in his own land. But that doesn't matter. How could it matter? You are perhaps the most creatively self-actualized man who has ever lived. Look at that vampire. He's coming in hot and a hundred Venetian nuns gave their lives to make his ludicrously capacious lace sleeves. Look at that girl. She was born in a fog machine. She wore her best red velvet cape. She's down bad. She's singing Total Eclipse of the Heart the whole time.
You are Jim Steinman, and you have reached apotheosis.
#i am obsessed with this stupid fucking composer#my phonr background for the past few years has been this man#my profile pic here is him#i cried like a little bitch when i found out he died#i traveled from Chicago to vegas TWICE to see this shitty 90 min cut down verison of bat out of hell the musical#and i saw it 13 times

My one wish is to find a bootleg of- I think it’s the Hungarian production?
There’s an utterly G E N I U S scene that perfectly mirrors the scene in the musical where Sarah is enjoying a bath Alfred tries to convince her to escape the castle with him and the Prof:
As you know, in the scene following Sarah and Alfreds talk in the bathroom, Alfred goes back to the library to meet with the Prof again, and then we get the scene between Herbert and Alfred.
At first you have Bertie luring Alfred away from the library with the three-note song Sarah usually sings. You know, business as usual…but in the Hungarian production, when Alfie gets to the bathroom, Herbert is about to step out of the bath.
I can’t gush enough about how this perfectly shows the juxtaposition between Sarah and Herberts characters - it really rings home the similarities they have, and how Herbert is of course a perfect foil for Sarah.
I know I’ve said perfect a lot in this post but I just can’t help it - this concept, this idea, whatever you call it - as a writer I absolutely love it!! ^^
#tanz der vampire#musicals#poor Alfred#caught in a bizarre love triangle#kinda#hey that’s also one of my favorite songs#lol#but anyway it physically hurts me that I can’t a bootleg of the Hungarian production#this addition that they made to this scene is pure brilliance#the mental image alone has me literally cackling
