Ooh now here's a fun one, what does Gaius think about my Tantalus Locksmith? My nasty iron legion criminal who got sent to the mines and escaped with a faked death. (Just assume Gaius knows about the whole fake ID as Mercenary Rust Scarjaw too)

I think Gaius is mostly impressed by Tantalus' tenacity and grudge-keeping ability, as well as lack of self-awareness?

Like, there's no reason for him to not be aware of Tantalus' sentence to the mines--I won't claim he had anything to do with it, given I've established his area at the time was more dealing with recovered AWOLs (ie if Tantalus had ever been caught...)--but he mostly just has much more important things going on than to pay attention to what he's up to.

There's definitely some level of respect to Tantalus for his desire to continue operating in/around the Legions as a mercenary, but at the point of canon where Gaius is back in the Citadel and acting as a legionnaire again, it's not really his business to get involved in.

Considering it on a level of Gaius knowing Marcus better, and discussing the topic of Tantalus with him, I do think it'd be interesting for Gaius' consideration of him to be more "aware" of a closer party's view of went on there, he doesn't have much sympathy for him. Paraphrasing, he'd call him a pissbaby.

I honestly adore all my main charr's outfits, they fit them all so perfectly. But I'll bring extra attention to Nastazya and Marcus' outfits first.

Time to gush about my scruffy nasty bastard murder man Tantalus Locksmith, or really known more as the mercenary Rust Scarjaw.

Ex Iron Legion, his older brother Marcus became a source of envy for him. Marcus had all the freedom despite also having the Legion's support, and Tantalus was stuck doing the same Iron Legion jobs day in and day out.

He got sick of it, sick of the Legions always dragging him down. He could be so much more, but it's hard to just leave the Legions like that. So he dabbles in a bit of thievery, livens his life up a bit.

Eventually the Ash Legion catches wind of this, and figures out a scheme to try test his loyalty. Assassination of an Iron Centurion for him to take their place, and he falls for it.

Steals military files to prep for the kill, but gets ratted out by the Ash soldier that set him up. He's arrested, sent to the Scourgejaw Mines and essentially tortured while forced to mine, at punishment of execution if he does not.

He spends a month there, back lashed to scars, the left side of his muzzle and teeth scarred by rocks thrown by the guards. He snaps, strangles the guard watching over him with his own whip, then makes due his escape.

But he gets shot in the back during this escape, and only survives by playing dead, the Legions write him off as executed. He's rescued by a Thieves Guild lady known as Cassi Swiftshadow, though he was extremely abrasive to her at first. (mostly because it was her flash bomb that blinded him and got him shot.)

She does make it up to him at least, aids in his recovery alongside a human known as Thiefmaster Slade. The latter teaches him in Daredevil ways, and eventually helps him shift his new life as Rust Scarjaw.

A year later though, tragedy unfolds as Cassi's attempts to rescue more imprisoned charr leads to her getting captured by the same Ash soldier that once caught Tantalus out, Julius Tonguecut.

She sends her crow for aid, and Tantalus manages to get there, but not quick enough. He takes out all of Julius' warband, before finding the man himself and a Cassi injured and dying of poison.

Julius breaks the antidote right in front of them both, which shifts Tantalus into a sadistically cold state as he makes Julius' end slow and agonising. He also ends up killing Cassi as a mercy, before the poison took her in further pain.

When he returns to the Thieves Guild, he tells all what happened, before affirming that killing is what he was meant to do. Not thievery.

Though still close to the guild, his focus shifts more on mercenary work, and he also becomes self-taught in the ways of a Deadeye.

So now, we have a horrendously spiteful and sadistic charr who despises the Legions at large, making a living as a killer for gold. Far more gold than he ever earned as a Legionnaire.

And that does him just fine, in fact, he has a sick sort of satisfaction when he takes out his mark. Something about the look in their face before he ends them.

He's far beyond any redemption, and he doesn't want it either. This is his life now, it's his choice, and no one will take his freedom from him.

Lovely customer purchased a tantalus without a key. I love Bramah locks and happy to help. Smashed sliders and spring will slow me down a bit. Careful with the silver. A Tantalus is a small wooden cabinet containing two or three decanters. Its defining feature is that it has a lock and key.
