This is an ongoing collection of links* that should cover a whole range of bits and pieces relating to Dragonriders of Pern and Anne McCaffrey – from interviews to interesting articles!
* I check these regularly, but I cannot vouch for if the domains still exist and, if not, what is currently on them. A lot of resources relating to Pern are from the 90s/early 2000s and liable to be replaced by random hosting spam.
EDIT: walks-the-ages has added some excellent comments about the Wayback Machine! (And many thanks for backing the pages up on it.)

So who in totals travelled with the doctor? I know we saw donna, but what other companions are there?
This is gonna be a big one, so *Takes a deep breath*
In his first incarnation, the First Doctor started his travels with his granddaughter Susan, accidentally taking her school teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright. Along his travels, people would come and go, including Vicki Pallister, Steven Taylor, Katarina, Sara Kingdom, Oliver Harper, Dodo Chaplet, Ben Jackson and Polly Wright.
In his second incarnation, the Second Doctor would continue his travels with Ben and Polly, taking on Jamie McCrimmon, who would stick with him through his life. Along the way, The Doctor would also travel with Victoria Waterfield and Zoe Heriot. It was during this time that The Doctor would also meet Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, who would become an important figure during his most of his lives.
In exile is his third incarnation, the Third Doctor was forced to work with the Brigadier as UNIT's scientific advisor. Working initially with Liz Shaw, Mike Yates and John Benton, he would finally be able to travel again, first with Jo Grant, and later Sarah-Jane Smith.
In his fourth incarnation, continuing to travel with Sarah-Jane Smith and joined by Harry Sullivan, the Fourth Doctor would go on to travel with Naomi Cross, Leela of the Sevateem, Margaret Hopwood, two models of the robot dog K9, "Anne Kelso", Romana in two of her incarnations and Adric.
In his fifth incarnation, The Doctor continued travelling with Adric and took on Nyssa of Trakken and Tegan Jovanka, who he had met towards the end of his previous incarnation. Along the way, he would also travel with Marc, Thomas Brewster, Hannah Bartholomew, Vislor Turlough, Peri Brown and Erimem.
Still travelling with Peri in his sixth incarnation, The Doctor would travel with others including Frobisher, Evelyn Smythe, Charlotte Pollard (retroactively under the guise of Mila due to already travelling with his Eighth Incarnation), Flip Jackson, Constance Clarke, Melanie Bush and Hebe Harrison.
Continuing to travel with Mel in his seventh Incarnation, the Doctor would go on to be joined by Ace McShane, Bernice Summerfield, Hex Schofield, Sally Morgan, Lysandra Aristedes, Mags, Raine Creevy, Elizabeth Klein, Will Arrowsmith, Chris Cwej and Roz Forrester, though ultimately ended up travelling on his home.
The Eighth Doctor would find himself starting afresh, briefly meeting Grace Holloway and Chang Lee, before going on to travel with Izzy Sinclair, Fitz Kreiner, Charlotte Pollard, C'rizz, Mary Shelley, Lucie Miller, Tamsin Drew, Molly O'Sullivan, Liv Chenka, Helen Sinclair, Tania Bell, Andy Davidson and Bliss.
The War Doctor would go on to make a point of travelling alone, never taking on a travelling companion during his life.
Though he would continue travelling alone for much of his life, the Ninth Doctor would finally yield and take on Rose Tyler as a companion, and later Adam Mitchell, Captain Jack Harkness and Tara Mishra
In his tenth incarnation, The Doctor would continue travelling with Rose, though would later go on to travel with Mickey Smith, Martha Jones, a returning Captain Jack, Donna Noble, Gabby Gonzalez, Cindy Wu, Anya Kingdom and Mark Seven.
The Eleventh Doctor would start his travels with Amy Pond, going on to take on Rory Williams, Alice Obiefune, John Jones, ARC, The Squire, Abslom Daak, The Sapling, Valerie Lockwood and Clara Oswald.
Clara Oswald would continue to travel with the Twelfth Doctor, who would go on to travel with Hattie Munroe, Nardole and Bill Potts.
In her Thirteenth Incarnation, the Doctor would spend her entire incarnation travelling Yasmin Khan, being joined by Ryan Sinclair, Graham O'Brien and Dan Lewis.
Throughout many of their lives, The Doctor would constantly meet River Song, though on many occasions would be forced to forget their encounters to preserve the web of time.
An aspect of the Station Eleven show I really love is how everything happened the exact way it needed to. I remember reading the book and thinking that, if Arthur hadn't died on the play, Kirsten, Jeevan and Clark would've probably died from the flu. Then the show takes this to a much higher level.
If Miranda hadn't learned about Arthur's death the way she did, the Gitchgumee passengers would've entered the airport and everyone there would've died. If Miranda had had dinner with Arthur? Same thing. She lost her final moment with him and that saved his son's life.
If Elizabeth and Tyler had made it to the play, they would've met Kirsten. Maybe she would've stayed with them after Tania left with Arthur in the ambulance? Anyway, probably all three of them would've died.
This show was filled with tragedy and missed connections and that's what kept everyone in the present alive.
I think the exceptions are Jeevan and Kirsten getting separated and Tyler leaving the airport, but still, they both acknowledge that they were happier than they would've been had they stayed where they were.
This show is so full of sorrow, but it's so beautiful.
The Avett Brothers at KEMBA Live!, Columbus, Ohio, Aug. 20, 2024
The Avett Brothers of 2024 are a band in flux. While the seven-piece touring lineup remains the same, the group is supporting a pop-leaning LP and talks from the stage about working, more than playing, for its audience.
So it went that seven of the nine tracks from 2024’s the Avett Brothers made up nearly one-third of the band’s Aug. 20 outdoor gig on an unseasonably chilly, full-moon night in Columbus, Ohio, at a pretty much sold-out KEMBA Live! The musicians were more emotive vocally and physically than in the past, infusing new songs like “Never Apart (w/Vocal Prelude)” and “Orion’s Belt” with choreographed moves and making what was once organic joy feel contrived.
During these and other new numbers, Seth and Scott Avett struggled to align their harmonies and Joe Kwon’s cello and Tania Elizabeth’s violin were more adult-contemporary orchestral than down-home Americana as Scott Avett kneeled and slapped hands with audience members and Seth Avett struck rock-star poses under a backdrop of gold praying hands, a disco ball and kaleidoscopic lights.
It was nearly 30 minutes into the two-hour show when flashes of yesterday’s Avetts appeared, when the septet lit into Doc Watson’s instrumental “Black Mountain Rag” and Seth Avett’s electric guitar added a rock element to his bandmates’ country drive.
Scott Avett performed “Murder in the City” solo and acoustic and the Avett brothers and bassist Bob Crawford got folksy around one mic on “I Wish I Was.” Elizabeth continued the unplugged theme with her rambunctious solo spot pairing the instrumental “Le Reel Du Pendu” with the vocal-and-fiddle “Les Barres De La Prison” and earning a raucous response from the audience, a large number of whom began streaming out about halfway through the gig.
The vast majority who stuck around as space opened up in the lawn sang lovingly to the balladic “I and Love and You” and lustily to “Kick Drum Heart.”
The four-song encore continued the contours of the main set, beginning with the mindlessness of Toby Keith’s “As Good as I Once Was” by the Avetts/Crawford trio and ending, as virtually every Avetts show does, with the riveting, deeply thoughtful “No Hard Feelings” by the full band.
But even this magical song - which typically leaves Sound Bites in tears - produced only a lump in the throat, summing up an atypically tepid evening with the Avett Brothers.
Grade card: The Avett Brothers at KEMBA Live! - 8/20/24 - C+
San Diego Unified School District exploring possible changes to student cell phone policy
As thousands of students in the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) head back to class on Monday, it is likely many of them will have their phones close at hand. But possible changes could be on the horizon for the district's cell phone policy for kids in the classroom, according to the Voice of San Diego.
The district's Board of Education is researching the potential harms of using a cell phone in class, but that research is still in the very early stages, according to board member Cody Petterson, who spoke with the Voice of San Diego.
"I've studied focus, and it takes over 20 minutes to re-focus back to where you were if you get off focus and get back on to it," said Elizabeth McGuire, a speech pathologist who has been practicing for more than 20 years. McGuire primarily works with toddlers.
"I do a lot of work with focus, behavior as well. The things that I've noticed from hearing from my colleagues as well, that it's all about the child and if they're able to have it but have it put away so it's just for emergency use, then that's the best," said McGuire.
In June, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) approved a ban on cell phones while on campus. The move drew support from Gov. Gavin Newsom, who released a statement after the ban was approved.
"As the Surgeon General affirmed, social media is harming the mental health of our youth. Building on legislation I signed in 2019, I look forward to working with the Legislature to restrict the use of smartphones during the school day. When children and teens are in school, they should be focused on their studies — not their screens."
Gov. Newsom referred to a bill he signed into law more than five years ago, which allowed school districts across California to adopt cell phone bans. It's unclear if SDUSD might consider a similar approach to Los Angeles, but some parents, like Tania Rodriguez, believe that it would be a good approach to keep students focused on learning while in the classroom.
"I think they should have the cell phone, but maybe not while in class," said Rodriguez, a mother of two children who attend school in the Chula Vista Unified School District. However, she does not believe that an all-out ban on cell phones for the entire school day would be wise.
"That's a tough one ... just on campus, that's a stretch. I can understand while in class, but on campus that's a stretch," said Rodriguez.
NBC 7 reached out to SDUSD for comment on possible changes being considered to the school cell phone policy. We are still waiting to hear back. *Reposted article from NBC 7 by Adonis Albright on August 11, 2024

“Nada".
—me preguntó.
Sir Mohamed Muktar Jama Farah CBE OLY (born Hussein Abdi Kahin; March 23, 1983) is a British long-distance runner. His ten global championship gold medals make him the most successful male track distance runner ever, and he is the most successful British track athlete in modern Olympic Games history.
He is the 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold medallist in both the 5,000 m and 10,000 m. He is the second athlete, to win both the 5,000 m and 10,000 m titles at successive Olympic Games. He completed the ‘distance double’ at the 2013 and 2015 World Championships in Athletics. After finishing second in the 10,000 meters at the 2011 World Championships, he had an unbroken streak of ten global final wins. The streak ended in his final championship track race, when he finished second in the 2017 5,000-meter final.
He mostly competed for over 5,000 m and 10,000 m but has run competitively from 1,500 m to the marathon. In 2017, he indicated his intention to switch wholly to road racing following victory at his final track race, the 2017 IAAF Diamond League 5,000 m final. He won the 2018 Chicago Marathon in a time of 2:05:11, a European record.
Born in present-day Somaliland, was trafficked from Djibouti to London, at the age of nine where he was forced into child labor. He adopted the name, becoming a British citizen. He is the European record holder for the 10,000 m, half marathon, marathon, and two miles, the British record holder for the 5,000 m, the British indoor record holder for the 3,000 m, and the current world record holder for the one hour run and indoor world record holder for the two miles.
He was the first British athlete to win two gold medals at the same world championships. He has won the European Athlete of the Year award and the British Athletics Writers Association British Athlete of the Year award more than any other athlete, three times and six times. In 2017, he won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
He married Tania Nell (2011). He has a stepdaughter, twin daughters, and a son. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
