one of the things i love about adam's content is that he gives insight into things i wouldnt normally watch or care about like the internal lives of trashy internet microcelebrities. i could not with a gun to my head name any defining moments in the careers of logan paul, tana mongeau or trisha paytas or tell you what they were famous from

SOCIAL MEDIA FAME NUMEROLOGY
3 - number of comedy and communication similar to gemini energy (one of the best numbers in my personal opinion except they are often gossiped about quite a bit)
ex: mr beast, charli damelio, tana mongeau, keith lee, emma chamberlain, nara smith, trisha paytas, noah beck, hamzah, zoe laverne
7 - number of technology. this is also the number of food so these people tend to blow up more from videos involving food. they also do well as gamers
ex: rheagan coursey, gina lynn (the chick fil a sauce viral vid girl), madeline argy, markiplier, pewdiepie, vinnie hacker, lexi rivera, alex cooper
8 - the number looks like two 3’s put together so these people can be humorous and strong mouth pieces. this is an underrated influential number. it’s also the number of power and money
ex: jake paul, katie ritchie, jake webber, brooke scholfield, druski, baby ariel, sssniperwolf
2/11 - the number of charisma and influence. they tend to get a lot of hate unfortunately
ex: logan paul, ksi, woo wop, ishowspeed, james charles, larray, lele pons, fanum, avani gregg, fannita
13/31 - underrated number of influence similar to 33 except u must work hard for it with this number. these people tend to create trends
ex: tara yummy, kai cenat, alix earle, jeffree star

i think one of the most poignant things about kon we don’t see anymore is how much his character was deeply tied with masculinity AND misogyny. when westfield implied that kon inherited the sex pest gene from him, it was a crucial moment bc a lot of ppl will say editorial simply didn’t know any better when writing kon’s tenuous grasp on boundaries and his issues with consent. i disagree. i think EVERYONE knew that kon was weirdly hypersexual but let him get away with it bc they couldn’t ground him bc nobody was his parent. it’s the same reason why no one really stepped up to teach him better when he was actively being groomed and manipulated by knockout, and being crept on by tana. the supporting cast, SUPERMAN EVEN, knew that kon’s dalliances with older women were not exactly a good thing, but nobody was gonna step up to say anything bc it wasn’t any of their business.
after hypertime and tana’s death, the way kon interacts with girls shifts towards a more traditional, hypermasculine order, especially with cassie who does NOT wanna be treated like that. kon knows now that he has bad habits, but he does not want to be perceived as a creep anymore. at the same time, in the quest of not being seen as a creep, he ends up embodying the other part of the problem that is paul westfield - deeply rooted misogyny veiled underneath traditional masculinity.
although peter david and joe kelly successfully translated this conundrum into their young justice and later superboy issues, geoff did NOT. geoff kept the misogyny, but he forgot the grooming, manipulation, and Kon’s own history as a victim of child sex abuse. his relationship with masculinity and misogyny doesn’t work, and comes off like the way that it did in dark crisis and stmot, without his history of being a dnalien, without realizing that westfield likely trained his developing brain to consume porn and skinmags so he could ‘be like his father.’ it’s the classic toxic masculine ideal of a shitty father handing his kid violent pornography when he’s seven, and not at all perturbed when that seven yr old ends up getting manipulated and groomed by a predator. it’s a distinct view into how fathers will absolutely ruin their sons, if it means getting the last laugh.
it’s also why i think the clex angle only really works from a superficial lens because kon didn’t actually develop during ttv03. he was softbooted to a point where even physically he was unrecognizable.
all in all to say, i think that’s all part of why konwriting still struggles so deeply. his story isn’t just about his quest to be like superman, but also an allegory about kids who OD by age twenty. it’s why even waid’s kon+kenan backup feels so cheap bc it’s like - well why is he doing this? why does he act like that? hasn’t he learned a thing since sacrificing his life? in order to write kon half as well as 1994-2002, we would first need to admit that his initial run was actually good. and it was.

Do you think Superman ever found out about Superboy trying to drown himself?
so this is one of those thorny questions that rises out of the way dc editorial was like, well superboy and superman are separate books and we don't want superman all over superboy's story all the time. because in the text, there's absolutely no acknowledgment of it from clark, even when mae shows up and rips the s-shield patches off kon's jacket for misrepresenting what superman's crest stands for. if mae's heard of what's going on, surely clark should have heard about it too, right? but that never actually is shown to have happened anywhere in the aftermath of knockout arc.
it goes back to the attitudes prevalent in karl kesel's writing (and in general at dc in the 90s, i mean), with stuff happening to kon that SHOULD make any adult with a degree of common sense and responsibility go "hey! wait a minute!" but that has no real impact because karl kesel as the writer thinks it's nbd. like in superman jr and superboy sr, when clark is written as thinking kon and tana dating is just fine.
like, it's a discrepancy. because superman, the character whose entire thing is like. caring about everybody ever, and who IS shown to care for kon even before they're as close as they get later, ostensibly should have heard about superboy getting tangled up in something with a villain, and gone to investigate, and the fact that he didn't is entirely because editorial didn't let him, and because karl kesel didn't think this was a predatory situation. like yes knockout was written as manipulating and abusing kon, but not in a predatory way - just in the "manipulative and evil woman takes advantage of kind and naive boyfriend who wants to believe her" way. which is insane because she's also written calling him jailbait and all sorts of shit, but. that's just how kesel thinks sexual women are, and that's what he thinks teen boys fantasize about, etc., so it's not written in a fashion that even remotely condemns that behavior as Maybe Not Great.
because like. the thing is. if superman heard that a kid who fights crime wearing the crest of his house got manipulated into defending a villain and then tried to kill himself to take her down, of COURSE he would step in and say something or do something. in annual #2 he literally shows up just to talk to kon about how he's feeling about the paul westfield revelation - the idea that he wouldn't step in re: the knockout situation is absurd. it's completely out of character for him.
so like, no, i don't think he knows. it's the only way to explain him not showing up at any point. which is still hard to actually reconcile with the fact that mae did know, but... when working within the confines of what we're given with by a flawed canon that reflects its authors flawed views, we kinda have to bend stuff here and there a little, right? it's kind of impossible to make sense of, otherwise.
my personal interpretation of events is that clark was kind of avoiding too much news about kon in the early days because he needed some time to process the whole "being nonconsensually cloned while he was dead" thing, but also was in denial that he was upset or feeling violated at all, because he knew it wasn't kon's fault and because he was already fond of kon, and felt quite guilty for having any hangups about how kon came to be. it still takes a little fiddling (for instance, his appearance in annual #2) but it's the best way i've found to keep clark in character while having kon's story remain as it is. (i do find kon's narrative of exploitation and suicidality compelling. he's so kind and so full of joie de vivre and so independent. and at the same time those traits keep getting him taken advantage of. he's a vulnerable child in the spotlight. ough.)

favorite word?
haven:t thought about it;
finished castle rock season 2 today, it:s a really good show if you only consider it as episodes 1, 5, and the last twenty minutes of episode 10 (the finale)--annie wilkes is a fantastic character in it but she fits only loosely (and poorly) as a 'hero' for an action narrative (which is how the story turns when it becomes more focused on the jerusalem's lot story-beats); i still really adore the 'spirit' behind castle rock, and mostly just wish annie wilkes had been kept as a secondary antagonist instead of falling into a strange deuteragonist hero;
still just adore the character--it:s something about the puritanism with a bunch of low vulgarity underneath the skin like all the gunk had just been swept under a nice rug; it:s a trait in the book version, too: they share this stink that comes from a love of junkfoods and, whereas castle rock features her more outwardly cleans, in misery she:s a breath of sewage and all her characteristic foulness is included in her efforts to clean (the murder of the rats and how she discards their carcasses; the usage of the dirty rag she uses to mop waste also being used to treat paul)--she:s just this depressive hole punctured into reality from a human-shaped cookie cutter;
then i put dostoevsky on pause, because although i really like what he writes about, his narrative structure is sort-of a slog; not so-much because of density but so far the bulk of brothers karamazov are these comic back-and-forths where there are a few comic setpiece characters and then long monologues between two 'opposed' characters that fleshes out ideas--and the ideas are really insightful, but i wanted to read something else. so: i started wuthering heights and i disliked the first three chapters because i don:t enjoy how emily bronte writes (i think jane eyre is better written) but the following chapters i:ve been enjoying more and more; i want to hopefully start/finish a christina stead novel this month, too. i:m almost done with tana french's in the woods. i haven:t felt very well lately.

one of my jasmine headcanons is that she definitely follows up on all of the celebrity and YouTuber drama. Also influencer/tiktok drama as well.
all of her YouTube recommended is just drama, commentary, and video essays covering the stuff above!! That’s almost all she watches!!
her ‘favorite’ dramas to me is all of the 2010’s YouTuber drama with all of the classic old YouTubers (Shane Dawson.. almost puked while typing that name, gabbie hana, tana mongeau, Jeffere Star bleghh, Trisha Paytas, The Paul Brothers, etc.)
with hazel and winn, she talks about the drama she’s watched and been educated on from tiktoks and YouTube. She goes on a full rant and including to them. But hazel and winn just look at each other and go, “jasmine who tf are these people.. what are you talking about..” and she rolls her eyes and educates them on who they are. The talks they have at lunch and recess go CRAZYY
that’s it ty for coming to my yap session <3 have a great day/night wherever you are in the world!!

ok it’s time for elvira’s yearly reading wrap up! best and worst of 2023:
worst:
the cabin at the end of the world, paul tremblay - disappointing. could have been so good but, alas, was not.
the silent patient, alex michaelides - quite possibly my least favourite of the year. people were telling me how shocking it was and how it had a huge plottwist. this plottwist was predictable from PAGE ONE. please.
the grimoire of grave fates - i remember nothing except being bored.
hide, keirsten white - i hate when horror is bad <3
filth, irvine welsh - okok my second attempt at reading irvine welsh. i liked parts of this book but not enough to even slightly enjoy it as a whole.
finnegans wake, james joyce - i wasn’t sure whether this should go in best or worst honestly. such a huge phenomenon, purely because it’s “unreadable”. i still don’t know how to feel.
best:
12 bytes, jeanette winterson - miss winterson can do no wrong in my eyes. brilliant reflections on technology, written beautifully.
new animal, ella baxter - just SUCH a good time!! great novel on grief and sexuality.
the gilded wolves, roshani chokshi - i’m very picky about my fantasy books, but i fell in love with this trilogy so fast. the characters are incredible and diverse, and finding a canonically autistic character meant a lot to me.
tripping arcadia, kit mayquist - creepy, gorgeous, has not left my mind. i can’t even explain it, it is just an Experience. Go read it.
how to sell a haunted house, grady hendrix - FUN HORROR!! HAUNTED HOUSE!! EVIL PUPPET!!
when we lost our heads, heather o’neill - lesbian marie antoinette historical fiction? yes.
no longer human, osamu dazai - gorgeous tale of existence and misery. loved loved this one.
i who have never known men, jacqueline harpman - heartbreaking and real. one of those books i think everyone should read.
patricia wants to cuddle, samantha allen - lesbians and furry little monsters. weird as fuck and so funny.
penance, eliza clark - reflections on true crime and the rivalries between teenage girls. gruesome and fascinating.
not forever but for now, chuck palahniuk - MY MAN RETURNED!!!! and i am so goddamn grateful. nauseating but stunning. masterpiece as always.
house of hunger, alexis henderson - gothic vampire novel with a touch of haunted house story and eerie lesbians.
sign here, claudia lux - one of the funniest books i’ve read in a LONG time. selling your soul to the devil is basically the same as working for capitalist organizations.
the child thief, gerald brom - HORRIFYING version of peter pan. brom always makes me utterly nauseous and i am ovsessed with him in every way.
the girls, emma cline - 60’s cult vibes, true crime, just a solid piece of literature.
angels before man, rafael nicolas - basically gay bible. 10/10.
silver under nightfall, rin chupeco - poly queer vampires. gritty gore. amazing world building. cannot WAIT for the sequel.
none shall sleep, ellie marney - me? enjoying crime fiction from someone other than karin slaughter or tana french? it IS, apparently, possible.
house of leaves, mark z danielewski - IT IS ABOUT! THE! SYMBOLISM! I WANT TO YELL.

PLEASE share some of your favourite books!!! of all time And ones that you discovered this year!! (also only just noticed your header… i love those two <3)
omg anon i would love nothing more!
books of all-time: the secret history & the goldfinch by donna tartt, the haunting of hill house & we've always lived in the castle by shirley jackson, the night circus by erin morgenstern, the immortalists by chloe benjamin, lincoln highway by amor towles, say nothing by patrick radden keefe, the collector by john fowles, never let me go by kazuo ishiguro, tell the wolves i'm home by carol rifka brunt, the night tiger by yangsze choo, the shadow of the wind by carlos ruiz zafon, in the woods & the likeness by tana french, and the bell by iris murdoch.
i'm sure there are some i'm forgetting; i'm sorry to those books!
i try to read a broad range of genres & sub-genres, but my soft spots are magical realism, the promise of an ambiguous and bittersweet resolution, family sagas (or a codependent pair of siblings who are all the other has in the world), novels strongly influenced by classic literature, and unconventional murder mysteries.
and this year, i have favorites for all of the above!
magical realism: the house of the spirits by isabelle allende; ashamed i had not read this classic before, but i arrived at the party and i never wanted to leave.
also recommend: the light pirate by lily brooks-dalton
bittersweet: the memory police by yoko ogawa; more like bittersweet from beginning to end, and haunting. so very haunting.
also recommend: we all want impossible things by catherine newman (if you read the blurb, you'll understand why this is bittersweet, but it is also the funniest book i read all year)
family saga: tom lake by ann patchett; my book of the year, a beautiful exploration of mothers and daughters, our town by thornton wilder, first loves, and the summer stock theater scene.
classic influence: the historian by elizabeth kostova; brilliant take on dracula and vampiric folklore.
also recommend: state of wonder by ann patchett (a heart of darkness, but with women in the amazon!); demon copperhead by barbara kingsolver (tbh i felt it follows david copperfield a bit too closely, but her writing! oh her writing!)
unconventional murder mystery: i have some questions for you by rebecca makkai; not too unconventional, but it has some great takes on the true crime industry.
and since those are all fiction, i'll also add, for non-fiction, that i really loved the wager by david grann, the extraordinary life of an ordinary man by paul newman, and the premonition by michael lewis (great for anyone interested in what america's pandemic response was supposed to be, how it was developed, and why it went so wrong in 2020)
alright wow, this got so long—i'm so sorry! i'd love to hear what everyone else's favorite books they read this year are!
#ask#thank you so much for letting me ramble anon!#and god yeah do i love and miss maeve and amiee <3#book recs

3, 5 and 17 for the book asks!
Thanks! 💕
3. What were your top five books of the year?
If I pick from new (to me) reads:
Tom Lake by Ann Patchett (audiobook narrated by Meryl Streep!)
The Hunter by Tana French
The God of the Woods by Liz Moore
The Bee Sting by Paul Murray
Mina’s Matchbox by Yoko Ogawa
5. What genre did you read the most of?
I think almost half the books I read would fit into the mystery genre. I found a couple of new mystery authors this year, which is great because I’m picky, there are some popular authors in this genre that I’m not in to.
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
My dad gave me Mina’s Matchbox by Yoko Ogawa for my birthday - I didn’t know anything about the book or author and I was pleasantly surprised by it, it was an interesting little story. And featured a pygmy hippo, which I assumed was made up until the internet became obsessed with Moo Deng and I learned they’re real animals!
