it had been an off-hand comment, not one that tamsin had expected sasha to latch on to... or do something about. it makes a part of her melt — which feels disastrous to her. "no, i don't hate them," she's quick to reassure her, looking up from the bouquet to sasha's face. she feels the need to quickly look away again and so focuses back on the flowers. "it was sweet of you to bother. i wasn't hinting, i swear."

Some notes on my pacrim fantasy au:

Herc became King of the Wild when he married Angela, who was the princess of the kingdom. The people loves him so much for his dedication to the kingdom that everyone is dead loyal to him.

The Prince of the Wild tile means Chuck can communicate with animals. He can even ask for their assistance in battle if he wanted, but he doesn't usually 'cause he don't like them getting hurt for dumb stuff.

Whenever the Goddess is mention, it's a reference to a deity that acts in almost any territory: the Lady of Dangers, aka the equivalent of G. Danger.

The Beckets were not really royalty. The Pale (or the white lands of the North) didn't use to have royalty at all. Instead, the land belongs to the real icekin tribes (the equivalent of the Inuits). When the demonic invasion began, the Goddess chose the Beckets as coverage for the icekin tribes, giving them a kingdom in exchange for them to become the first line of protection between demons and the sacred lands.

That's why, when Yancy dies, his spirit stayed and the Goddess ascended him. He is dead as a human, but he lives now as the immortal protector of the Pale, aka Knight of Danger / the White Knight.

When the Hunter Order / The Order of the Hunters was created, two members of the tribe took the vow along with the Beckets. Ilisapie Flint and Zeke Amorak were selected by the Chrome Goddess to act as the second line of defense in the Pale. This means that the chrome cousins and the danger brother are good friends, but rarely see each other or even work together.

Mako is a priestess of the Goddess. She took the vow young, but old enough to give her consent as a woman. She was 18 years old.

Mako is skykin. She used to live in the City in the Skies, before the demons climbed all over it and brought it down, killing her parents. She was taught by her father how to shape the wind into a blade, her weapon of choice.

Pentecost is human, but trained with the Thunder Guard since young age. Affinity to electricity is affinity to the skykin, so it's not a surprise he was such a good teacher to Mako or that his sister, Luna, was a skyrider herself.

The Hansens are have earth affinity, but Chuck has a special brand on himself, courtesy of his mom. The Wild is a kin of its own, one that demands things of the Prince, but offers mysterious benefits in the future.

Tamsin and Pentecost had twin giant coyotes as their partners, assigned to them on the thunder guard. Tamsin has fire affinity, btw.

The Kaidonovsky are hybrids or demi-bloods, part earthkins and part icekins. They do not obey a goddess or a king, but a court of giants, magical terrifying creatures that protect their territory with the ferocity of true love. The codenames Cherno and Alpha came from the job Sasha and Aleksis had before joining the Hunter Order: they used to supervise the black and white pool of magic to make sure only the right people entered their territory --and punish the traspasers.

The Wei Tang brothers are the sons of the Crimson Goddess. They're said to have been once upon conception, but one day playing with mortals, the kid emtered a typhoons and came out as three different beings. The Goddess allows them to do as they please and takes great pride on them being Hunters of beasts.

I'll do my best to include as many pilots as I can, since most of them are alive in the story!

how would your stories have been different if your characters were women?

this is an interesting question! lets see

Rowe would honestly be the exact same. since he was trained inside the system, he never received any normal socialisation. it was all replaced with training, so Rowena (lol) would act the same as him

since Tomas is a fairly effeminate gay guy, it's only fair that Tamsin (this is making me laugh) would be a nice butch lesbian. and Kasia, or........ Sasha (they rhyme!!!) would have to be your classic evil femme fatale, to match Kasia's awful macho energy

I think Tomas and Rowe's story wouldn't have varied too much, honestly. I'm of the firm belief that male and female characters shouldn't be written massively differently. and I wouldn't want to shy away from all the fun ugly details of a whump story, just because it's with women

Linden and Col on the other hand would be pretty different I think! I wouldn't have made sexual abuse such a big part of... Colette's backstory, out of personal choice, but to compensate I might've upped the gore. so she could have had a few missing appendages by the time she was taken in by Linda.

I absolutely love weird, reserved, hermit-y women, and we don't see enough of them, so I think Linden's female counterpart would be EVEN MORE solitary than Linden is. and more weird. for fun

so we would've had a hugely scarred whumpee and a weirdo reclusive caretaker, which sounds like a lot of fun to me. and ofc jaffa would stay the same <3

How I Lost My Shit: I got so bogged down in world-building it stopped being funny. I kept trying to put every last tiny detail into the story and it just draaaaaaaaagged.

How I Finished My Shit: Thank GOODNESS for this Big Bang and the deadlines forcing me to focus and to my most awesome beta for helping me find an angle and to have the courage to mercilessly cut out stuff that didn't move the story forward. In the end, what I feared would work out as a 60k fic came out at just under 17k and is much better for it.

Before this home in South Yarra got the Tamsin Johnson treatment, it was an outdated mustard-coloured two-storey, with a poky 90s renovation. There were glass brick feature walls and partitions where there shouldn’t be – in the words of Tamsin, it was ‘actually comical!’. The whole place urgently required flow, continuity and cohesion as one space.

‘We looked to mid-century style to suit the house and accentuate the bones we fell in love with,’ says Tamsin of the approach she took to updating her sister’s home.

The block is long and narrow, meaning there was very little access to light. To remedy this classic problem, the threshold was located at the centre of the property, positioning the entrance hall in the belly of the house with wings unfolding towards the front and back. This layout created pockets for internal voids, and a small courtyard to siphon more light into the space; yet it still remained dark.

As her first port of call, Tamsin devised a new tiered, open-plan layout for the ground floor, opening up the living spaces so each communal zone could spill into its neighbour. She filled in the courtyard, repositioned the clunky U-shaped kitchen, and installed huge steel-framed windows on the ground floor to ensure light carried from the sunken living room at the front of the house to the original conservatory-style breakfast nook at the rear.

Essentially, the designer created a tunnel of light that draws the whole floorplan together.

Once this sense of spatial cohesion was achieved, Tamsin set about updating the finishes throughout the home, and sourcing unique design pieces to inject a sense of personality.

For example, banquette seating upholstered in red and white striped fabric was paired with an antique French dining table made from cane, lending an eclectic feel to the breakfast nook. Cane furniture throughout provides a connective thread to the house’s textural rhythm, uniting the offbeat interior scheme from room to room.

‘She’s my best friend and we have very similar taste so it was a very easy process,’ says Tamsin of working for her sister, Tess. ‘They gave me complete creative license.’

And the results speak for themselves! The finished project ‘has a real ebb and flow of life,’ says Tamsin. Hence its name: the ‘Sanctuary’ home.
