harry didnā€™t grow up with stories of james potter, the indian boy who ran through hogwarts, loud and proud and full of life. he didnā€™t know that his fatherā€™s voice would fill the great hall with laughter, or that james would argue passionately in defense of his culture, unafraid to bring the fire of his heritage into every room he walked into.
but as harry gets older, he starts piecing things together, collecting fragments of a man who left echoes behind him. he learns from professors that james would use his wand to create vibrant garlands during festivals, brightening the gryffindor common room with colors his classmates had never seen. heā€™d coax sirius into trying spicy food theyā€™d never even heard of, laughing as they both coughed and spluttered but insisted on more. and when they celebrated diwali, james would tell them, grinning with pride, about how it wasnā€™t just a festival of lights, but a reminder of resilience, of the light within that never dims. he'd shown that same resilience during the war.
harry hears whispers from people who knew his fatherā€”the way james insisted on using tamil compliments because they ā€œsounded much better,ā€ the way he would answer teachers in tamil just to remind everyone where he came from. the way heā€™d refer to remus as ā€œnanbaaā€ (friend), that special affection saved for the people who shared your burdens. how he called lily his ā€œthangamā€ (gold) because of the colour her hair shone in the sunlight.
and slowly, harry begins to reclaim pieces of his father. he learns how to wrap a veshti, stubbornly practicing until he gets it right, because he knows itā€™s something james wouldā€™ve worn proudly. he finds comfort in the smell of his dadā€™s favorite spices, brings them with him to work as his own quiet rebellion, and teaches ron and hermione how to roll up chapatis late at night in grimmauld place.

(South) Indian Harry Potter Headcanons:
Harry knew he was Indian (mostly because the Dursleyā€™s used to say racist shit to him) but he didnā€™t know where in India the potters were from until he went to Hogwarts. He finds out from the Patils, who were close with the potters because desis stick together.
The Patils are from the north and use Hindi to speak to each other. Neither of them knows Telugu/Tamil/Marathi/Malayalam/insert Southern language of choice here (I personally headcanon Telugu because itā€™s the only Indian language I speak and because thereā€™s a huge diaspora of telugumandi in the west, but feel free to choose whatever youā€™d like). So Harry has to rediscover his heritage language on his own.
He also studies Sanskrit, and it opens up a HUGE world of spells that they donā€™t teach at Hogwarts (because of course Indian wizards donā€™t do spells in Latin). He and the Patils know a bunch of spells that nobody else does.
Harryā€™s pleat game is ON POINT. It makes sense, since he had to do all the chores at the Dursleyā€™s and that includes perfectly folded and ironed laundry with the edges aligned neatly, or else he would risk being punished. But the result is that if you want your saree drape to pass the inspection of even the most judgemental auntie, you go to Harry to help with your pleats.
Even when theyā€™ve graduated and all have their own homes, itā€™s a pretty regular sight for the Patil twins to come through Harryā€™s floo, half dressed, to have Harry pleat their sarees or their lehenga dupatta for them.
Harry LOVES spices. The dursleys only liked bland food, but Harry has always liked flavorful foods, and has no problem with (hot) spicy food either. He uses lots of spices in his own cooking now. His food is very flavorful, but when heā€™s cooking for himself, itā€™s too spicy for all his friends (even the Patils). So nobody can eat his leftovers unless he was specifically cooking with other people in mind. Ron learned this the first time he rummaged through Harryā€™s fridge after a night of drinking. Now Harry labels all his food as to whether or not itā€™s ā€œHarry spicyā€.
James LOVED to buy Lily sarees. Heā€™d order them with custom, wizard-themed designs from weaving villages in south India. The women who made them assumed he was just very imaginative, so he wasnā€™t violating the statute of secrecy since saree patterns are often vibrant and unique. Harry finds some of them in the old potter manor, and they still smell like the perfumes and scented oils his mother would wear when James took her to the local temple for Hindu holidays.
Indian witches often store extra magic in or enchant pieces of their copious jewelry with spells that can keep them safe if theyā€™re ever in a situation where they donā€™t have their wands. stuff like, each bangle can function as an emergency portkey that can take you to different safe locations if you say the activation word, or ones that create an instant magical shield when you tap them. Harry finds some of his mothers gajulu, gives them to his female friends.
He ties Rhaki on Ron and Neville, and all the weasley boys. Ron was the first person he ever tied it on, because Ron was the first person who he ever bonded with, and his closest brother.
Harry always cooks idli sambar or dosa for his friends for breakfast the next morning after a night of drinking together, and itā€™s the perfect hangover food because it definitely brings you back to full alertness/knocks the last bit of post-hangover grogginess right out of your system.
Harryā€™s parselmouth abilities are valued in his native culture because of the sacredness of snakes in Hinduism, and it comes to be something heā€™s really proud of (personally I think the ā€˜parselmouth connected to the horcruxā€™ thing is dumb, so Iā€™ve always imagined Harry was just naturally a parselmouth).
As the number of Indian immigrants/expats continues to grow after they graduate, Harry helps some of his students (heā€™s the DADA teacher) start the Hogwarts ā€œSouth Asian Student Unionā€.
He always has snacks out for his students when they come to visit his office hours, and theyā€™re all Indian snacks and sweets. His personal favorite is kaju barfi, but he always has a good variety of both sweet and spicy treats, especially for stressed out owl and newts students.
He collaborates with Hermione, who works in the ministry, to make it mandatory for Hogwarts students to a ā€œforeign magical languageā€ course so they can broaden both their minds and their spell repertoires. Padma Patil becomes the ā€œSanskrit Spellsā€ teacher, and Seamus teaches ā€œIrish Gaelicā€. (It took him a little longer to get his course started, since it turns out that at least 40% of Gaelic spells are just increasingly complicated and violent ways to repel the English).
Hermione and Harry also work together to make sure there are employees in the international magical cooperation department who specialize in post-colonial relations, because the magical world also has its issues with that colonialist mindset towards countries that were formerly part of the empire.
Just south Indian Harry embracing his heritage, learning about what was ripped from him, and using it to enact meaningful change in a multicultural magical society.

Hariharan Nalin Potter
Heir of House Potter
Faceclaim: Anirudh Pisharody
Hariharan Nalin Potter, commonly known as Harry and famously as the Boy-Who-Lived, is the eldest child and only son of the Potter family's Head couple Lily and James Potter and their husband Regulus Potter. He is the older brother by four years to a younger sister named Madhuri Potter, as well as the godson of Sirius Black and Sharanya Patil.
More information below the cut
What's in a Name?
Hariharan ą®¹ą®°ą®æą®¹ą®°ą®©ąÆ
ā€” from the the fused Sattvika characterisation of Vishnu (Hari) and Shiva (Hara)
Hari ā€“ the one who takes away (sins)
Hara ā€“ Remover of sins
Nalin ą®Øą®³ą®æą®©ąÆ
ā€” means close, abundance, pride; also a synonym for lotus
Follows the Evans tradition of naming their children after flowers
Also calls back to Jamesā€™ middle name (Mooriyan, pride)
Picked by Regulus. In ancient Egypt, lotuses represent rebirth and the Sun and by god did he feel his life beginning anew the moment he laid eyes on baby Harry
The Snake With No Self-Preservation Instincts
When Harry entered Hogwarts at the age of 11, the Sorting Hat was torn between Gryffindor and Slytherin for him. Maybe even Ravenclaw if the Hat was feeling particularly experimental. In the end, the Hat put him in Slytherin, much to the delight of his baba Regulus.
Slytherin won the Hat over by just a small margin. In this universe, Harry was raised not with scorn nor contempt but with an overabundance of love and support. Many of the influential adults in his life inspired him to be as driven and goal-oriented as they are. Additionally, the inclusion of a third, Slytherin-to-the-core parent also influenced Harry's own personal choice in Houses.
Slytherins are also defined by their tendency to stick close to family traditions. Harry was raised completely immersed in his South Indian heritage of Tamil and Telugu and he's very proud of it. Thus he is completely dedicated to preserving and following the cultural and familial traditions he was raised with.
Finally, he has a brilliant and clever mind as well as a knack for leadership (regardless of how much he denies that himself). Growing in a house of love and positivity allowed Harry to fully lean into his gifts instead of focusing on survival. In this universe, Harry was allowed to shine and shine he did.
As per the hierarchy of Slytherin, Harry is naturally the most influential half-blood as the Boy-Who-lived and is considered by his half-blood and Muggleborn yearmates as their leader the same way the Purebloods consider Draco Malfoy theirs.
"You're a bloody Slytherin, why do you lack self-preservation?" "Maybe if you dig your pointy nose into my business some more, you'd find it."
One thing that does set Harry aside from his Slytherin cohorts is his apparent "lack of self-preservation". Sense of self-preservation is a signature Slytherin trait that is far outweighed by Harry's natural "saving people thing" that is apparently in every Potter's genes.
Harry simply doesn't hesitate to lend a hand whenever he sees that he could. He helps even when it is detrimental to himself, which gives him a sort of reputation as one of the more eccentric Slytherins of his year. This resulted in him gaining a close social circle that is composed of several non-Slytherins which is an unusual sight within the House that Keeps to Themselves.
Escaping from Death's Clutches
Harry's main claim to fame is his apparent survival from being hit by the Killing Curse at point blank when he was four years old. The incident was widely publicized by Voldemort himself who had kidnapped Harry as a child after years of failed attempts to pierce through the powerful wards of Nagaraja Hall. Voldemort had wanted to publicly execute Harry as punishment for his parents who had thrice defied him.
This backfired on the Dark Lord as not only did Harry survive his Killing Curse but the knockback from the protective Magics weakened Voldemort enough for a furious Lily Potter to land the killing blow on him, ending the First Wizarding War. Because of this, Harry and Lily share the title Lord Voldemort's Vanquisher, a title that both despise.
Harry sports a seemingly permanent lichtenberg scar above his left eye. According to all the Healers that have examined him, it may very well be the first and only known occurrence of a curse scar borne from being hit and surviving the Killing Curse. The scar runs deeper than it looks and has rendered Harry half-blind in his left eye.
He has little to no clear memories of the incident owing to how traumatic it was but the trauma has left its own imprints in him, namely his scar, partial blindness, and a certain discomfort whenever someone points a wand at him without any warning.
Collected Miscellany
Little bits of extra information/headcanons for him. This section will be updated from time to time.
As per the tradition of Nandhini's descendants, Harry is bonded to a boa constrictor and a Basilisk
Harry has Lilyā€™s temper, Jamesā€™ compassion, and Regulusā€™ pride
He has been said to be a promising talent in flying, combat magic, and transfiguration. He claims to have an ā€œeasier timeā€ at performing wandless magic. He was also personally tutored by his grandmother Euphemia in the art of pearl-based magic.
Excels in the Seeker position but does pretty okay in other positions.
Produced a corporeal Patronus at age 13. His Patronus is an Indian sambar stag which is the same as his appa James
While heā€™s absolutely brilliant in the kitchen, he unfortunately didnā€™t inherit Lilyā€™s talent at Potions.
This is because he was taught how to cook before he was taught how to brew. Potions requires precision and accuracy but heā€™s used to measuring ingredients ā€œby heart, soul, vibes and the voice of his ancestor whispering in his earsā€.
Heā€™s surprisingly good at anything related to snakes, be it brewing antivenom potions or working with venom or any snake-sourced parts
Aside from English, Harry is fluent in Tamil and Telugu, and conversational in Sanskrit, Middle Tamil, and Classical Sanskrit. Regulus is teaching him and Madhuri Masri (Egyptian Arabic) and Demotic (a very, very late descendant of Ancient Egyptian).
Childhood friends with Ron Weasley since they were babies through the friendship of Lily and Molly
He is also friends with the rest of the Weasley siblings by extension
Also friends with the other children of the Magical Indian diaspora families, notably his godsiblings the Patil twins Padma and Parvati
Met Hermione Granger at Kingā€™s Cross Station where his mother befriended her mother, Monica Granger. Hermione then became Lily's protege and Hermione would spend a portion of her holidays at Nagaraja Hall
Met Draco Malfoy as a baby during the wedding of his parents to Regulus Black and made him cry
Particularly fond of Luna Lovegood who he met at a young age as she was the daughter of Pandora Lovegood, who was friends with Lily
Buddies with Neville Longbottom who is the son of Alice Longbottom, who is also friends with Lily
Paired with Blaise Zabini in Potions so they are within the acquaintances to casual friends range
Spent his childhood going back and forth between the Potterā€™s Nagaraja Hall and the House of Serpents

I remembered watching this film with my family a long time back and I rewatched it today because I have exams tomorrow.
I swear the plot at those times were diverse and unique. Each and every character in the house had a solid personality. And Nagesh- I loved his acting, his voice modulations and his reactions, I loved it.
I bawled my eyes out at few of the scenes. some were very sadšŸ˜¢
My favorite scene was when Maadhu's professor comes to visit him to talk about marrying him with his daughter and Paaru intervening.
Nair's ideas always backfiring, the movie fanatic and the two silver cups.

An Obligatory(late) Intro Post
Hi!!!
Tumblr media
I'm Quill! I told myself I'd post this after I update my WIP, so now that I finally did that- read on for a description of who I am, what I post, and a vague idea of what I want on this blog.
Who Am I?
I'm desi Canadian. I speak Tamil(my native language) I can understand French somewhat, and I like to think I understand basic Korean(Update: I absolutely do not šŸ˜). English is my second language, so if you find something clunkily worded or weirdly written, blame it on that.
I'm bi and I use she/they pronouns, and if you could use both pronouns equally, that would be reallyy great.
Personality-wise, I like to think I'm somewhere between Hermione Granger mixed in with Luna Lovegood dumped into Annabeth Chase and then infused with the personality of Ron Weasley. I'm messy and do not stay on topic, and I prioritize being kind. If those are things you like, I'm sure we're going to be great friends. If they aren't, still, just stay kind. That would mean a whole lot to me. ā™”
What do I post?
Is this a Harry Potter blog? Is this not a Harry Potter blog? That is the question.
It isn't actually. (I like to think I'm funny) This blog is basically a dumping ground for my hobbies and obsessions, which include, but aren't limited to- writing, drawing, crocheting, singing, and general screaming at the unfairness of life and other bullshit. I become obsessed with fandoms and the odd kdrama frequently often, so every now and then prepare to see random content because I can't be bothered to actually use the sideblogs I made.
Harry Potter is among the list of fandoms I have oPiNiOns in, and therefore, something you're bound to see. Nothing I can do about that, sorry!
Other than that, I post and reblog content about PJO, Grishaverse, MCU, and a shit ton of kdramas you've never heard of and will now know obscure details about.
I have too many ships to list and will read anything, so.
I also reblog fundraisers from the vetted asks I receive.
Organization is a myth. You will not find anything on here. I post randomly and I reblog excessively.
DNI's.... uhhhh, not really.
I'm not really a huge fan of DNIs. Or anything else of the variety, because they're mean in a really useless sort of way, and I'm not into that. I just want this to be a fun and kind space to talk about what I like and do and chill w my moots and other incredibly smart people. This is a welcome space for everyone who wants it to be welcome and kind to everybody. That being said: bigotry and other toxic bullshit is not welcome and you will be picked to shreds and immediately blocked if you do decide to bring it on here.
Other than that, if what I post is your thing, scroll on! If it isn't, click the close or block button and I hope you have a wonderful day.

Alright, Iā€™ve been on this website long enough that I think Iā€™m starting to be viewed as a bot.
Iā€™m not a bot, I swear, Iā€™m the child of shadows for no reason other than the fact that thatā€™s my Ao3. Teenage me thought that was cool, current me agrees, haters can keep hating (there are no haters yet so letā€™s not make that a thing, yeah?)
you can call me shadow šŸ™ƒ.
im Indian (south indian, I know Tamil and Hindi and also Spanish), but Iā€™ve never spent more than two months at a time in India. Actually, I spent about 90% of my life in Canada and the US.
My Ao3
my sideblog -> @shadow-the-photographer
My Fandoms:
I tend to drift a lot, and Iā€™m obsessed with everything, so weā€™re going to split it down the middle.
Iā€™ve forgotten a lot of the books Iā€™ve read, so a lot might not be on the list. Feel free to DM me with arguments, agreements, book recs, or just anything, I love conversation.
Stuff Iā€™ve written/read for:
Percy Jackson and the Olympians (as of July 2024, Iā€™ve only ever written PJO)
Star Wars (sue me, I love the prequels)
Harry Potter
HTTYD
Marvel Cinematic Universe
Big Hero 6
Books I LOVE:
The Inheritance Games (By Jennifer Lynn Barnes, her work is incredible)
Powerless (Lauren Roberts)
Ana Huang and Rina Kent are two authors who never grew out of their Wattpad phase, but their work is pretty good.
Shatter Me (Tahereh Mafi)
Once Upon a Broken Heart (Stephanie Garber)
Caraval (Stephanie Garber, and im scared to finish legendary bc apparently Scarlett and Julian break up?)
(booktok has me on a chokehold)
KOTLC (Shannon Messenger)
A Good Girls Guide to Murder (I read this when I lived in Canada, itā€™s a trivia point)
The Lunar Chronicles (Marissa Meyer)
The Land of Stories (Chris Colfer, iconic and always connects to good memories)
Warrior Cats (I binge read it in sixth grade and somehow still keep up)
(Iā€™ve read a lot of books, just dm me, idc if you donā€™t follow me)
Books that I have read, but didnā€™t exactly enjoy:
the love hypothesis (ali hazelwood)
icebreaker (Hannah Grace, šŸ¤®)
Bridgerton kinda deserves to be on this list, To Sir Philip, With Love specifically.
Rina Kent is on that list above bc her books sound good in summaries, but she writes like an eleven-year-old on fanfiction.net
Twilight (Stephanie Meyer, Edward and Jacob shouldā€™ve ditched Bella and run off together, bc that is a story I would pay to see)
Fourth Wing (Rebecca Yarros, itā€™s good but I wouldnā€™t want everyone knowing every time I had sex, and violence is a terrible nickname)
Movies/TV Shows I LOVE:
fantastic beasts (10/10)
Every single Deepika Padukone movie ever.
almost every single SRK movie ever
DEADPOOL (convinced me to go to a middle school talent show and do standup comedy)
The Adam Project (walker scobell is iconic)
on that vein, I absolutely LOVE the new PJO series
most things in the MCU (she-hulk was traumatizing)
The AGGGTM series (no comment bc it was amazing)
im always looking for new friends, so just dm me and I will def bother you until you file a lawsuit.

I read your fic ā€œParvatiā€, and commented on AO3. Rather than repeat all that here (I mean I could, but why? Time to stretch a little, eh), Inwould like to ask, maybe one, maybe a few, shall we say sensitivity questions.
First of all, the Healer in my name is honest. Iā€™m an old curmudgeon, been in health care for 50 some years, and a Registered Nurse for 42 of those. People are one of my passions, or I wouldnā€™t have done what I have for so long.
Now the Ask: in my current WiP, I did some research because I wanted an OC who is the daughter of Padma and Parvati Patilā€™s older brother. Backstory: During Voldemortā€™s Rise (Marauders generation), he was sent to live with a brother or sister of one of their parents (havenā€™t codified it, could be Dadā€™s side, could be Mothers). So that he would be safe, and help Kees the family name alive. Does that sound about right?
Second, she knows her Aunts, sheā€™s been to Britain to visit. In my headcanon for this fic, Padma goes into the Aurors, and Parvati strikes out on her own as an entrepreneur. The characters name is Paradeshee ā€œDesheeā€ Patil. Does the diminutive sound right?
And finally, because you helped me understand the pronunciation of Parvatiā€™s name, do you thinking would work if one of the other American characters hears the ā€œthā€ when Paradeshee says her aunts name?
But of backstory for the fic: Ginny and Harry are in Washington DC, heā€™s attending an international law enforcement conference (with a secret magical track), and sheā€™s doing research for a book sheā€™s writing. Their two boys are off to Hogwarts and their daughter will start there later in the year the story is set (2019).
There is a murder of two individuals, one an Auror that works for Harry and is assigned to the Muggle British Embassy security crew; the other is an American sailor, a Hospital Corpsman who is in the wrong place at a bad time. It turns out that the Potters know Special Agent in Charge Gibbs with NCIS, on the scene of the murders because one is active duty Navy.
And much hijinks ensue.
I tried PM, and since weā€™re just meeting you donā€™t follow me. Quite right. My apologies if the ask is too forward, but I do enjoy your story about Parvati and family, and you do encourage asks.
Hello! Thank you for the ask. I'm really glad you enjoyed my Parvati fic and I am happy you are writing about a character of colour. It's always nice to see the Patil twins and their family represented in fics. That being said, I'd ask that you do as much research as you can before writing. I'd also recommend you check out @writingwithcolor for both resources and advice on how best to approach writing POC characters.
Coming to the name of your character. Please, please, please for the love of god do not name her Paradeshee. This word is a slur in the Tamil language and has casteist connotations. It's also not a name that I've ever heard any Indian woman have. There are plenty of other names you can choose from, just look online! I've linked some resources here, here, and here for you to go through about writing Indian characters in particular.
When writing an Indian character, I'd suggest first picking out which region of India they come from, because everything else, from their food habits, clothing style, traditions etc will be based on the region they come from. For example, if you wrote a character from the state of Tamil Nadu stating that they grew up speaking only the language Telugu, that would be incorrect, as people from Tamil Nadu speak Tamil as their native language. Similarly, with naming, certain names are more common in certain regions, so I'd recommend you double-check that.
About Parvati's name. I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean? Everyone will hear the "th" sound in Parvati's name if it's pronounced that way.
I understand that the name you chose for your OC was an honest mistake, so as long as you fix that in your fic moving forward, it should be okay! The plot of your fic sounds very interesting, and I look forward to seeing it posted! Good luck with all your writing projects. I wish you all the best <3

TAG 9 PEOPLE YOU WANT TO GET TO KNOW BETTER
Got tagged by @telomeke. Thank you! I appreciate it.
THREE SHIPS šŸ”¹ huh for bl or in general? You know what, i'll do both.
For bl, i don't want to pick the same ones you did because otherwise i'd have nozue/togawa and pat/pran too so
Sound and Win (MSP)
Zhou Shu Yi and Gao Shi Di (WBL)
Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu (Word of Honor)
For non-bl
Erina/Mito from Food Wars
Barbara and Melissa in Abbott Elementary
Kyotani/Yahaba from Haikyuu!!
FIRST SHIP šŸ”¹ in a fandom-y way, probably something Harry Potter tbh
LAST SONG šŸ”¹ I was gonna say Lonely by R.M. but I forgot I watched a bit of the Legally Blonde musical after that so I think it's actually Whipped Into Shape from Legally Blonde the musical. Those two are wildly different songs but Callahan's verse in whipped into shape is so damn good, i listen to just that section all the time. Lonely on the other hand, I don't listen to all that often because I generally prefer Change prt 2 but it's a really great song on and if I hear it once, it ends up being on repeat for the rest of the day.
LAST MOVIE šŸ”¹ Like telomeke, the last movie that I watched (or atleast remember watching) is a tamil film. It's Mersal. Though I could be getting the order of events wrong and it's actually KGF prt 2 which is a Kannada film. I've lately been in a show vibe so I haven't been watching film unless it's with other people so either way the last one was either Mersal or KGF 2. I lowkey forgot Vijay had a triple role in Mersal, I thought it was only a double role. Plot's watchable enough but the songs are where it's at. This movie's soundtrack was a hit when it came out and I still have the entire soundtrack on my spotify. KGF 2 is only good if you turn your brain off and don't take it too seriously. The background music is spectacular though. And the outfits. I spend the entire almost 3 hour runtime rating Rocky's looks. (man's not afraid to wear a full pink suit ok, definition of nontoxic masculinity /jk)
CURRENTLY READING šŸ”¹ Well, I just finished Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies by Seth Holmes and ofc y'all know i'm on my Haikyuu!! re-read of which I am on volume 8 if notes are to be believed. However, I am miserably failing because the original idea was to read it in chronological order and NOT skip ahead but I have no self-control and keep re-reading bits. Like just the other day, I read the ball-boy arc which led to me reading the Spring Tournament arc and now we're on the last bit of the Kamomedai match and- It's fine though. It's going.
CURRENTLY WATCHING šŸ”¹ What am I not watching is the real question
Attack on Titan
My School President
Bad Buddy (just restarted today)
Moonlight Chicken
The Warp Effect
Abbott Elementary
and I just finished rewatching Old Fashion Cupcake for the fourth time so imma add that too
CURRENTLY CONSUMING šŸ”¹ a box of chocolates that I got for my birthday! They're pretty good.
CURRENTLY CRAVING šŸ”¹ not much at the moment honestly but I really want the Butter Paneer and the payasam I didn't get to eat on my birthday.
ONWARD TAGS šŸ”¹ i feel rude but i don't know who to tag so im just not going to. If anyone sees this and wants to be tagged, go ahead or let me know and I will but my mind's kinda blank

tumblr is sitting on its throne, watching as rich people fight on live tv and swirling a glass of wine between its fingers and saying, "we've been pleased. more. we want more."

if you speak for gay rights, you're automatically gay. just like everyone who speaks for animal rights is a duck and all those against deforestation are secretly trees hiding in a trenchcoat

guide to writing a desi james potter (and even for harry)!
(desi is used for south asians. meaning india + pakistan, afghanistan, bangladesh, bhutan, maldives, nepal, sri lanka. now iā€™m indian so i can only speak about that but a lot of the tips are the same. please research! and be respectful while writing them! iā€™ll try to include as much as i can here)
i've lived here my entire life so trust me.
and this is gonna be long. under the cut!
1. james potter can remain james potter
we donā€™t usually anglicize our names. donā€™t go finding obscure names starting with j that you can anglicize to james.
it kind of perpetuates the stereotype of indian names being very hard to pronounce. and britain fucked us over so no way in hell we'll be changing our own name to something easier for white people to pronounce.
instead you can make potters indian christians. i have a lecturer named veronica so i can assure you people in india have all kinds of names.
its a suggestion of course. but i have read fics where james has very traditional and religious names. no problem with that but its a little out of the loop and old fashioned. but if you want some help with finding names then donā€™t hesitate to ask.
2. where is he from
okay so now this gets interesting. there are a 28 states and 8 union territories. james potter can be from anywhere and not just gujrat and punjab and tamil nadu.
whereā€™s my james potter from the gorgeous seaside state of goa? from the busy heart of metropolitan mumbai? from the amazing states of northeast? from bengal? from madhya pradesh? from kerela? from-
okay this is not a geography lesson but you get my point! there are so. many. places. he can be from any of them.
3. religion
india has a big population of hindus, muslims, christians, sikhs, zoraostrians, buddhists, jains etc. agnostic and atheist people exist too (hi).
your indian character can be any of those, not just hindu. it affects the indian sounding name you choose for him.
example: goan christian james can be james maharashtrian hindu james can be jai
but being religious or not, it doesnā€™t stop us from enjoying all the amazing festivals. you donā€™t know what iā€™d do to read a jegulus diwali fic ashdjfksdj
4. looks
now i know everyoneā€™s like obsessed with atj (i canā€™t see him as james at ALL) or for desi james, dev patel (god, heā€™s the only desi character in all hollywood movies im so sick of his face. i have much better fancasts).
but just like names, our looks are also different. pale, wheatish, dusky complexion. again depending on which state. we usually have dark eyes and hair. and light eyes like blue, green or hazel are pretty rare.
5. food
curry doesnā€™t exist. repeat after me. curry doesnā€™t exist.
naan bread isnā€™t real, naan is A BREAD. and even though butter chicken is tasty asf, we don't eat this on a daily basis, my dudes. (#justiceforpavbhaji). but we do eat a LOT of biryani (its apparently the most ordered meal in india lol)
and i know you want to make the "im very white for spices" jokes but where are my desserts????? rasmalai? gulab jamun? rabdi? so cloyingly sweet ashdj
and we call tea, chai and it can be sweet and spicy.
it would make me so happy seeing names of my favorite food sprinkled through out your fic even if you don't elaborate on his indian heritage much <;3
i canā€™t list off every single one of them here but my dms are always open if you need any help with them
6. not all of us
it makes me sad reading about fics where james doesnā€™t like his indian heritage. not all poc characters need an "accepting my culture" arc.

hi! i'm diana (aka cal), and this is in bullet points because i like bullet points okay
i'm 18, indian, feminist, an LGBTQIA+ ally, and in love with stories.
my original online nickname was Diana Black (i was thirteen when i came up with it) but now most of my friends just call me cal. take your pick, i love both names.
some fandoms i'm in: harry potter, riordanverse (i've read it all), brooklyn99, the good place, the bone season, throne of glass, ascendance, cyoa
main ships atm are jily and percabeth, but i also love solangelo and rowaelin and peraltiago and (basically 90% of the canon ships in any media i've consumed. i love love.)
while i post a lot of hp related stuff, i despise jkr with my whole heart. trans people ily and i hate that you have to deal with that bigoted piece of shit.
well written jily fic is my sustenance. some people i'd read ANYTHING from: (ao3) ghostofbambi, apalapucian, cgner, lizardcookie, my friend terrie.
still wishing for an update of tlat, and doing my biannual rereads in the meantime. (what a masterpiece.)
feel free to ask me for fic recs, or send me random asks related to fandom, i'll be nice if you are!
@kailandpumpkins <- this is kail, my best friend and one of the best bits of my life. boop.
@shestrying <- this is dana, she's my actual soulmate and i love her.
@stedewards <- this is terrie, my book buddy and the godparent of all my original characters. they get credit for every bit of writing i have ever done (and will ever do).
i love love love the jily community here on tumblr (and the discord server- @jilymicrofics is the place to ask if you want to join). everyone i've interacted with so far has been so damn sweet, it's unreal. they're half the reason i'm inspired to write jily these days.
english music loves are taylor swift, jax, alec benjamin, alan walker, maisie peters, hozier, sabrina carpenter, and the old barbie animated movie albums.
telugu music loves are (the albums of the films:) hi nanna, majili, oopiri, oh baby, geetha govindam, ala vaikunthapurramulo, maharshi, ninnu kori, 100% love, seetamma vakitlo, bommarillu, mr perfect, mirchi, janatha garage, rrr, nuvvosthaanante nenoddantaana, love story, kshanakshanam, jersey, ready, orange, manmadhudu, happy, magadheera (aight there's way too much more so i'm stopping here)
tamil music loves are (the albums of the films:) alaipaayuthey, paiyaa, vaaranam aayiram, anjaan, kaatru veliyidai, master, padaiyappa, ayan, maattrraan, singam(1&2) , thuppaki, yennai arindhaal, viswasam, roja (1992), thalapathi, dharmathin thalaivan, I, aaru, aadhavan, 96.
hindi music loves are (the albums of the films/shows:) please find attached, aashiqui 2, yeh jawaani hai deewani, bajrangi bhaijaan, badrinaath ki dulhaniya, 3 idiots, thappad, student of the year.
(indian music artists) special mention to shreya ghoshal, chinmayi, A R rahman, and raghu dixit.
phew. that was a lot on music but like. i'm almost always humming or listening to music so it fits. i've only mentioned artists and albums above, but there's so many more individual songs that own my heart (in all the above languages.) maybe i'll make a list someday. or share a properly organised playlist? (all my current playlists are chaos lol) we'll see. anyway.
don't be mean to my mutuals, or i will come after you with a pitchfork.
i don't have a proper tagging system on my blog. i used to keep wanting to create one, but i know i won't keep up with it, so i've made peace with that now. i usually do tag posts that i make (especially if they contain sensitive information).
i might be delayed in replying to messages, asks, or tags, but i promise it's not personal!!! my People Interaction Energy has a mind of its own, and i often just don't have it in me to answer in the moment. I don't like half hearted replies, so i leave it until i do have the energy to reply and actually enjoy the interaction.
