Realized I never posted here! We added a new pup to our home. Her name is Cinder, and she is a tamaskan dog.
Tamaskans are a breed of dog that is bred to look like wolves. They typically have low or no wolf content. The breed is young and still in development, and is managed by the ITR in Europe, and the TDR here in the US.
Tamaskans not registered through either of these groups are likely not true tamaskan dogs and are potentially from puppy mills. Only ITR/TDR registered breeders are selling actual tamaskan dogs.
To prevent genetic bottlenecks, outcrosses are still done here in the US fairly frequently.
*Blue eyes are a disqualifying fault in Tamaskan dogs. Cinder has blue eyes and therefore cannot ever be bred, which is fine with us. While I love the breed, I didn’t feel we were in the right place to be contributing in that regard.
**Cinder was an outcross litter that happened before the parents had finished their health tests. Since they did pass, the pups were granted X-tier registration.

Warden had two litters as part of his contribution towards the Tamaskan Dog program. While we aren't going to ever be working with Tamaskans ourselves, we were approached with the request from several breeders who were looking for a wolfalike stud dog who'd been fully health tested and had no wolf content and Warden fit the bill. Both of his litters produced puppies who all Embark tested with no detectable grey wolf content, which was part of the goal for both breeders.
Lark and Ciri are the two breeding prospect puppies from Warden's second litter. The owner of the dam, Avalon Tamaskan, kept Ciri and they co-own Lark with a great family. They are only one year old, so they have another couple of years to go before they'll finish their health testing and be seriously evaluated for breeding suitability.

Chaska and Zuna ❤️
About a year ago I took some photos of Chaska, a tamaskan that I met at our local pet store - what an absolutely gorgeous dog 😍 super photogenic in my opinion. A little throwback to last year's fall 🍂
Both girls got along well and it was so nice to meet a tamaskan again :)
Have a nice weekend and enjoy the beginning of fall everyone

Hey!
I'm having a hard time tracking down any info on the origin of different sleddog breeds, especially their names, and I remember you've talked about it before.
I searched your blog but only managed to find a post about malamutes.
Any chance you could tell me about the etymology of other breeds like the Siberian Husky and if there are names I should use instead, like Inuit Qimmiq for the CID? Or if maybe you could point me towards good sources?
Thank you.
(also your dogs are lovely)
I mean some names are pretty self explanatory such as "Greenland Dog" and "Yakutian Laika" and "Inuit Sled Dog" (note that any indigenous breed is also going to have its own name in its native language as well, an example of this being Qimmiq).
I talk about the general etymology of the word "husky" and its usage as a generalized term HERE.
I talk about the etymology of the term husky and its use as a racial slur, as well as the use of racial slurs as dogs names HERE.
I talk about using alternative names for said racial slurs and some problems you may come across in the dog world when doing so HERE.
Also CID, as in Canadian Inuit Dog, and Inuit Qimmiq are both considered perfectly fine to use as it uses the proper term for the people originating the dog. It is the Canadian Kennel Club's official breed name of "Canadian Eskimo Dog" that there are (obvious) issues with. The campaign for name change desired "Canadian Inuit Qimmiq" as a compromise but did not go through.
Beyond listening to the various indigenous groups affected by these particular racial slurs and the racially charged and bizarrely still prevalent theme of naming new dog breeds after random, unrelated indigenous groups as a nod to their "wildness" I would not say there is a concrete source. Indigenous people are not a monolith and two individuals from the same community could likely have very different feelings on particular word usage. As an example of this divide, some people who are involved in working Canadian Inuit Dogs in their historical way take issue with the (many) campaigns to rename the breed, seeing the Canadian Inuit Dog as the true working dog and the registered Canadian Eskimo dogs as more pet bred and different. HERE is an article from the Fan Hitch about that. Now I personally know breeders of registered CEDs that are non-native across multiple continents who take great care to import dogs from their native country and from native sources so....not my circus, not my monkeys, but an interesting argument in this discussion nonetheless.
As with any of my etymology posts I merely seek to bring awareness to the origin on these terms so we can all have a greater sensitivity when interacting with the breeds of dogs that we love. I don't have answers and perhaps there is not really a one size fits all answer to this problem. I myself am not of any of the groups affected by these slurs and mythologizing, so I also don't think i can be considered a definitive source on the subject.
#dogblr#canadian inuit dog#canadian eskimo dog#qimmiq#sled dogs#husky#siberian husky#i wish i had good answers for this every time people came looking for them in my inbox#but to tell you the truth this issue is far too nuanced for me to know one besides CID being a better choice than CED.#Siberian Husky and the issues with that term and the wide usage of husky in general is a problem i don't see being solved#and i don't see a very wide push to rid ourselves of those terms at this time#so not using them can make communicating clearly about dogs that use the term husky in their name very difficult#as always i will come for the tamaskan's ass since its not too late for them to change their breed name

HI!
i redid waves some after art fight!! also experimented with a newish style w/ black outlines and a simpler shading technique than what i was originally suffering through
i felt him being an alpha clone, while cool for the unaltered aging, didn't quite fit his personality. i also had a gripe with how overly complicated the kobe stripes on his armor turned out, so i opted for some more simple and artist-friendly designs on both his body armor and his helmet!
i upgraded his old armor from clone captain to full arc w/ double pauldrons and the added chest guard. the helmet is not the correct helmet, i was just lazy and didn't feel like drawing an entirely new one so i threw some new tamaskan-inspired (dog) markings on it. also put his hair in a lil bun because as someone with long curly hair, having it in a bun while i am working is a must. lastly, i got rid of the upper part of his 'stache because it made any facial expression he had look... cursed
he is still an arc trooper, CT-25-4775 (definitely not my old discord tag dsjufsejik). close ups and inspo below!
the comic-ish style im in love raaa
same helmet as before but with a uv visor inspired by a pair of sunglasses from gta LOL
NOT MY DOG, i just really fell in love with the face marks so i mixed them onto his helmet
pose! i realized i could use my rex rex collection to aid in my clone drawing endeavors. mini rex having a mid life crisis helped
this one is honestly self explanatory lol
thanks for reading! i'd like to get into the habit of sharing what inspires me to make my art just because! i love seeing other artists do it and nothing is stopping me from doing it too. hope you all have lovely days!

Hello!! Would it be possible if you could tell me some info on wolfdogs??
sure man! apologies for the wait!! ^_^
Wolfdogs is a pretty broad term. They're often sorted into 3 categories: low, mid, and high content. These categories are in accordance with the ammount of wolf DNA actually present in the canine! there are specific "breeds" where wolf dna has been introduced including the czechslovakian wolfdog & sarloos wolfdog! if you want info on them specifically let me know, i'm just speaking on wolfdogs in general.
People will tell you that huskies and german shepherds have higher wolf content than other dogs! this really isn't true, they're just as much wolf as a chihuahua, which is to say very little. tamaskan dogs were bred to resemble wolves but are not wolfdogs.
People also tend to mix up wolfdogs and dogs with wolflike traits (somehow???) so here are some helpful charts that can also help you differentiate wolfdogs of different contents!
Temperament - It should be taken into account that every dog is its own individual! however, generally, High content wolfdogs actually tend to be more skittish and shy. This is because normal wolves are usually very nervous and avoidant of humans. Mid-Low content wolfdogs are usually more prone to attacks, especially because of their confidence around humans. They can be more aggressive than both dogs and wolves.
They have very high needs that can rarely be met by humans, and tend to be destructive if not given huge ammounts of space and mental stimulation.
They're also very indipendent, and dont require much human interaction outside of having their basic needs met.
They're known for escaping homes, food agression, having high prey drive, territorial behavior, sensitive behavior, reactive behavior, seasonal agression, and being agressive to or violently protective of small children. Theyre also very very vocal and tend to play very rough. Theyre also do well in groups, but getting multiple is usually an awful idea.
Health & Physical Traits - Wolfdogs usually have a lifespan of 12-18 years.
They're also huge. wolfdogs can weigh 70-100 pounds on average, and can end up bigger than both wolves and dogs.
Its basically impossible to meet the needs of a wolfdog because of various traits i listed in Temperament. That being said they dont do well in the wild either. They also have body language somewhat different from dogs, which can lead to communication failures.
Unfortunately I can't find many good sources on common health issues, buti imagine it depends on what dog they're mixed with.
They're luckily quite hard to injure because they have thick fur and tough skin to protect from each others' roughhousing, as well as predators.
