Y'know what I wish? I wish the Time Crystal had specifically shown Pike The Menagerie, not the accident or just his being in his wheelchair. Because then, we could frame the horrific thing, the thing that leaves him so scared, the thing that he considers equal to death not the mere fact of being a disabled person, but the ableism and the lack of agency he experiences in that episode. He spends the entire episode telling Spock no, he doesn't want to go to Talos IV, and Spock takes him anyway because he believes that he and the Talosions know what's best for Pike better than Pike does. Which is super gross, and also, unfortunately, something that real life disabled people deal with all the time. And ableism is horrific! It's not dehumanizing or feeding into awful tropes to say that, the way that saying being disabled is horrific does. It would fix all of my problems with how Pike and his disability are treated in both Discovery and Strange New Worlds.
Also, it would make The Cage be an episode in an episode in an episode, which would be fun

So are those Taloses Tahlia's weapon or just robo-minions they brought along?
Yup, they’re effectively Tahlia’s weapon.
Viorel is proficient in biology, Tahlia’s more of a gifted engineer.

Suur Talos! Eksimatu Talos! Võitmatu Talos! Me kiidame sind!
Jah, armastus. Armastus! Isegi inimesena armastas Talos meid. Ta nägi meis, igaühes meist, Taevaserva tulevikku! Tamrieli tulevikku!
Ja seal see on, sõbrad! Inetu tõde! Me oleme inimlapsed! Talos on inimese tõeline jumal! Tõusnud lihast, et valitseda hingemaailma!
Meie haldjatest valitsejatele on see idee mõeldamatu! Taevaste meiega jagamine? Inimestega jagamine? Ha! Nad ei suuda peaaegu sallida meie kohalelu maal!
Täna võtavad nad ära teie usu, kuid mis saab homme? Kas haldjad võtavad teie kodud? Teie ärid? Teie lapsed? Teie elud?
Ja mida teeb Impeerium? Mitte midagi!
Sest meie oleme inimlapsed! Ja meie päralt jäävad nii maa kui ka taevad! Ja meie, mitte haldjad ega nende käsilased, valitseme Taevaserva! Igavesti!
Kohutav ja võimas Talos! Meie, sinu vääritud teenrid, kiidame sind! Sest ainult läbi sinu armu ja heatahtlikkuse võime me tõesti valgustatud saada!
Ja sa väärid meie kiitust, sest me oleme üks! Enne, kui sa tõusid ja Kaheksast sai Üheksa, kõndisid sa meiega, võimas Talos, mitte jumala, vaid mehena!
Usu mind, Valgejooks! Usu Heimskri sõnadesse! Sest mina olen Talose valitu! Mina üksi olen Üheksanda poolt võitud, et tema jumalikku sõna jagada!

I was true to my word on Friday and I finished Breath of the Wild. I played it for a little while afterward, too, because after the credits were done, it just kicked me back to the title screen and there was a star next to my latest auto-save and Link was standing outside of Ganon's room in the outfit he'd been wearing before I ever entered it, which was the Climbing Set. I had changed outfits for the fight with Ganon, and then changed again for the second fight with Ganon. The fights, and the ending, were about what I had expected, though not at all what I had hoped. After so long in preparing to see them, I had built up a lot of hopes. I suppose that is a good thing. But there was very little chance that the game could live up to those hopes, and, in truth, it felt like they weren't even trying to. Like most other story events in Breath of the Wild, things simply happened and then were over. The first fight was disappointing because of how short it was. Finishing the four Divine Beasts and getting the ghosts who piloted them to shoot at Ganon with their big lasers meant that Ganon had only one form and only half health. I had thought that the four Beasts were shooting lasers the whole time, but that was wrong. They were, apparently, merely setting their sights. For fun, I climbed to the top of Hyrule castle and floated, using the glider, through one of the lasers. Just to see what would happen. Nothing happened. I thought it was clever that I needed to reflect Ganon's lasers at him at the end of the fight. That was nice. It was a cute callback to all the times that Link has used the Master Sword to do that same thing, though the Master Sword wasn't needed here. Nobody even seemed to care that I had it. I thought it was less clever that I didn't actually have to time it correctly to reflect the lasers. Just use the special magic shield that I had from the Goron Beast. It was good for three blasts. I correctly timed only one deflection, and let the Goron take care of two. And then I won the fight. How disappointing. Then Ganon decided to take the fight outside!!! So Link was outside!! And a horse was there!! Not MY horse, but A horse! And Zelda said her line, in Link's head, which was unchanged from what she would have said to any other player. She said that I might not have found all of the lost memories, but I had. She said Link might not be at his full power, but he was. She said those things that were pointless and silly, because she knew Link had gotten his memories back, and I know she knew because she said so as soon as he did. But she said them so she could say the cool line about how Link wouldn't need to remember courage, and it was a good line. It did make me wonder about the Triforce for a bit, though. I don't actually remember Link ever having anything to do with the Triforce of Courage. That... seemed odd to me. The second fight with Ganon on the horse that was not my horse was short and sweet and did its job adequately. The ending was the same. Adequate. I have no real complaints. I'm just sad that the ending cared so little about all of the work I'd put in. It was obvious that the 120 shrines I'd cleared meant nothing. Neither did the 900 Korok Seeds. I suppose they are their own reward. Once I reloaded my save with Link somehow still standing outside of Ganon's room, I went back to the Sheikah lab with the photo guy and bought photos of all of the game's bosses, which I hadn't taken when I actually fought them, except for Ganon's second form. I did take a photo of him. I got a "classified envelope" as a reward for filling the compendium. It doesn't do anything, but the description says it contains a picture of a beautiful young Sheikah woman, implied to be somebody I know. I can't see the picture, and no Sheikah woman I spoke to commented on it. Ah, well. I also got the Molduga medal from Kilton for having killed all four of them. I've apparently killed only thirty-two Hinoxes and twenty Taloses. Again I say, ah, well. I started playing Nier: Automata on Sunday. I considered going back to Horizon: Zero Dawn, but the fact is, that game just isn't fun for me. Nier is overwhelmingly just barely above mediocre. Every aspect of it so far makes me think, "well, this isn't actually good, but it's good enough that I'm happy with it." And then it stops there. It's content to be good enough to keep me playing it. Upon reflection, there's no reason for any game to ever aspire to be more than that, so kudos to the devs for knowing when to quit, I suppose. I am not far, I don't think. I died twice in the intro/tutorial mission, and so it took me several hours to complete it. There's no save point part way through, so if you die at the end of it, like I did, you start the whole thing over. That was upsetting. I like the character designs of 2B and 9S, the main characters, in an abstract sort of way, but I don't really find them attractive. It's hard to explain. What's interesting about them to me is the fact that 2B is a combat android who wears super high heels and a skirt and a white leotard/thong under the skirt. It's a pretty outfit for a pretty girl who wants to look sexy and pretty. It's a very impractical outfit for a soldier who wants to sprint at full speed and cut things up with a sword, or who wants to run around in a harsh and sunny desert, which are things that 2B does. And I think that that's intentional, and that's why I like her design as a sort of thought experiment. As an android designed by, if not humans, then by other androids who can trace their ancestry back to humans, it doesn't matter what she looks like. She won't get a sunburn because she doesn't have human skin. Whatever her pearlescent pink lips are made of, they aren't lips like yours or mine. Whatever her eyes actually do, it isn't see the world, since she wears a blindfold during missions and sees just fine. She's pretty and has a nice ass and shiny lips and feathery hair because whoever built her wanted her to be pretty and have a nice ass and shiny lips and feathery hair. That's all. That's the reason. Under the skin, she's all robotic parts, and those are what let her run fast and push heavy objects and swing swords around and survive in the desert. What's on the outside is just for funsies. And I like that notion an awful lot, even if she isn't my type (if you'll recall, I said what my type was a while back, and she's pretty much the opposite...except maybe the hair, I'll admit she has a nice haircut). This is illustrated pretty effectively in an early boss battle where you fight a machine that's built to look like a human, and who is completely nude. He has no genitals, but is otherwise well formed. It makes the point really well: what he looks like on the outside is meaningless. He is a tough machine and he is scary to fight even if he has the body of a supermodel. The same can be said of 2B. She has an impractical outfit and a slim, not super athletic figure, but as long as the Pistons and cables inside are strong enough, and her software is sophisticated enough, it doesn't matter. I like the philosophical questions that are raised if you repair her dead body if you die. 2B's memories are backed up on a server, so if her body is wrecked too badly, a new one is sent out. The new body can either salvage parts from the old one or repair it to let it temporarily act as a helper before it breaks down again and you get your stuff anyway. It makes you wonder about the nature of consciousness and stuff. I shouldn't have to explain why. Just think on it, I guess. I don't know. The dead bodies are naked, too, and show that 2B has no nipples or genitalia. She's just a pretty Barbie doll dressed up in a black outfit. That's important to me. That's relevant. It shows what is valued by the androids. Beauty is important, but sex isn't. 2B cannot fuck. I suspect that other androids are in the same boat. Obviously, she could get creative if she really wanted to be physically intimate with another android. But I think it's a bit silly to pursue that line of thought. I know the plot twist related to the humans the androids are serving, so I'm keeping that in mind. It's easy to look up, if you want to. That's what I did! I didn't feel like sitting in suspense for the whole game. I wish that the game had let me think that machines were unfeeling monsters for even a minute, though. As soon as the intro stage is over, I was dropped into a city with totally peaceful machines that just stood around harmlessly. They were just hanging out and enjoying the nice weather. I murdered them all for the money and the XP, but I knew they were innocent. It's the way the rules of the game are set up, I'm afraid. If there are only rewards and no punishments for evil acts, I'll totally do them in a game. I might spend a lot of time considering the philosophical implications of a robot lady's smooth pubic mound, but I won't not kill a dude who gives me money and XP. Those are my values, I guess. But the game just keeps going from there, showing me machine after machine that doesn't want to fight, that obviously feels emotion, that I shouldn't kill. I didn't kill anybody in the amusement park I didn't have to. Those guys were just having so much fun. It seemed plain rude to kill them. I got as far as giving the item from Pascal, a machine who leads a village of peaceful machines, because subtlety is not this game's strong suit, to the leader of a resistance group of androids, before I called it a night yesterday. I worry I may be going too quickly! Everything I've read about the game before this made it sound like this should be further into the game than I am. Maybe I'm skipping a lot of side quests. I don't know. I don't have a guide. Just a bunch of articles I've read online about what an amazing and moving game this is. But, I mean, I played Metal Gear Solid nearly twenty years ago. I'm already aware that war is bad and peace is good and that people who define themselves as fighters struggle in times of peace, and that seems to be the moral of this story, too. So I dunno. I'd like to keep writing about it as I play. I don't want to promise anything, though.
