I feel like if Fearghas had fandom discourse it would mostly be centered around his status as a former member of team plasma (i.e. if he's redeemable, if he's done enough to distance himself, if he's changed enough, etc.) But there'd also be very niche stuff about him being queer that like 5 people are arguing over

Yeah I definitely agree with you, most people would be debating about his time with Neo Plasma. With that I try to show examples of what Fearghas was like back then and what his motives were, since he's a chaotic neutral character.

And yeah I also agree that there would be a small percentage of people arguing over his queerness but idk what those 3-5 people would be arguing about haha

Normally, Calico cats should only be female, however one in three thousand Calico cats are actually male. This is because they have Klinefelter Syndrome, an intersex genetic condition. In cats, colour is stored on the x chromosome, a three coloured Calico has to have 2 X chromosomes, plus white. Males usually only have one X, unless they have Klinefelter Syndrome, where you have two X's and one Y.

Furries are quick to point out that male Calico cat fursonas wouldn't exist, but they actually would, they'd just be rare. Klinefelter Syndrome also occurs in humans of course. (I know this first hand.)

Therefore I propose: Calico Catboys COULD be real, despite what the furry meme says, however if they followed the human characteristics of Klinefelter Syndrome, they would be taller than average, usually over 6 feet, have a feminine weight distribution, including some limited breast growth, have a feminine hair/fur growth pattern, and have around a 20% chance of being autistic.

Two-Faced Jewel: Races

So, changing systems from D&D to my own thing had some Effects. In addition to needing to retrofit a new magic system, I also had to replace WotC trademark races... many of which had already shown up as established characters, whoops. So a little retconning was necessary. Here's the new taxonomy:

Humans

You know what these guys are like. We have these at home! The only substantial difference in the Jewel is that almost all the other humanoid races are technically variants of "human", and "humans" are just like, what you look like when you're genetically average and aren't especially tall or short or magical or furry. Basically everyone counts as "human", including dwarves and elves and stuff.

Elves

They're like humans but they're a little taller, have pointy ears, and live longer. There's a specific elven culture which is pretty insular and complicated and cares about blood purity and crap, which is kind of awful from the inside but regarded as cool and exotic on the outside due to their prolific cultural exports. Kind of Japan turned up to eleven, up to and including the Elvish language being represented as Japanese.

(Dark elves are a diasporic elven subculture largely shunned from the elven capital of Kanzentokai for complicated historic and religious reasons, and generally don't recognize the same hyperformal cultural practices of "normal" elves.)

Halflings/Dwarves

Here's the thing: there's no such thing as dwarves or gnomes, biologically. In fact, there's barely a such thing as halflings. It's just that literal human dwarfism is a lot more common and heritable and has fewer of the painful symptoms of standard Earth achondroplasia. If you're short and otherwise normal, you're a halfling, and there's not much in the way of cultural signifiers or stereotypes about it.

Dwarves are another story. Dwarves are biologically just halflings- they're just a specific insular culture, whose hallmarks are all the things stereotypical fantasy dwarves are about. Beards, mining, alcohol, talking in butchered Scottish accents, the whole nine yards. Even tall people are sometimes "dwarves" if they marry into dwarven families and take mining jobs.

Goliaths

Super-tall people with big muscles. Most come from a mountain culture, which in a world where mountains endlessly spawn nightmare monsters of doom, means a hyper-survivalist warrior culture. Otherwise biologically human.

Changelings

Pretty much all the "furry" races like tabaxi, aarakocra, and lizardfolk are lumped into this one category. Supposedly, ages ago, there were pureblood changelings, who had the ability to fold DNA from other animals they ate into their offspring. The more they did that, though, the less their offspring were able to do the same thing, and over time they sort of speciated into the various beast-races- who are otherwise biologically human like anyone else and can reproduce freely. The animal traits tend to either be passed or not, without mixing, and changeling kids from mixed-"race" couples will frequently have baseline human siblings.

Lizardfolk -> Gila

Yuan-ti pureblood -> Orochi

Sahuagin -> Innskin

Aarakocra -> Avians

Loxodon -> Nozz

Tabaxi -> Catboys/Catgirls (you can use "felids" or "catfolk" but unless the subject is nonbinary or of unknown gender, it's generally considered overly clinical and kind of a faux pas. Faux paw.)

Infernals

The copyright-neutral rework of Tieflings, infernals are technically a rare subspecies of changeling. Except... rather than eating normal animals created by the gods, the changeling ancestors of infernals dined on the omnicidal murder-monsters that crawled from the caverns below the mountains, origins unknown to the gods. This less-divinely-improved DNA is a lot more unstable, and the major side-effect, besides demonic appearances, is that they tend to be infertile by default. They're only able to have children with a small minority of people with the right invisible genetic markers, which means their population has been waning and they're fairly rare in the modern era, where you can't effortlessly travel the globe to find the rare someone to have kids with. They've got a certain reputation, considering their condition requires a certain degree of experimentation and promiscuity to find a suitable mate- if they're Joy citizens, they probably lean into it, and if they're Family citizens, they're probably deeply offended by it.

Half-orcs

Actual orc orcs ostensibly exist, but only as matters of historical curiosity. Generally peerless warriors who showed up out of nowhere to make outsized impacts on world history, only to disappear just as mysteriously as they came, leaving behind half-human offspring. Half-orcs (though exact blood proportion varies) are nothing special besides awkward dentistry, greenish complexions, and a tendency towards increased physical strength. Generally, they know no more about their ancestry than anyone else.

Goblins

Not created by the gods, supposedly. Long ago, they were monsters from the depths that attacked settlements topside- but unlike most monsters, they had a degree of intelligence and conscience, capable of surrender and integration into civilization. Goblins do everything quickly- they reproduce quickly, they talk quickly, they die quickly. Living in fast-forward, most goblins are in something of a hurry to make something of themselves before dying, with an average life expectancy of 35 years. As they can't breed with divinely-created races, they tend to live in large extended family units with their own particular cultures. (And conversely to elves, their short lifespans mean they're typically not wealthy or powerful.)

???

There's other races out there- like the mothfolk clan one of the PCs comes from- who aren't human, and don't have especially well-known histories, but don't appear to be "monsters" unknown to the gods. Various unusual biologies and innate magics exist across the Jewel, often unknown to the general populace. The players have thus far not asked a lot of nosy questions to the ones they've met (besides the dragon, who was being just as nosy in return.) Maybe they'll do that sometime? Or maybe that would be rude.

YOU’RE RIGHT. catboy shou is very tall, kinda lanky (still very toned he just has a lot of limb) and bendy. very catlike, whereas wildcat shou is a little taller and definitely more built. but either way he purrs and meows.

I know this might be kinda expected but...I really do think he is a great match for you!!

You and Shinsou had similar aesthetics, which means sometimes you end up kind of matching without meaning to. It’s actually really cute and it’s not like he minds. As long as he’s not the only one sporting a bunch of cat hair, he’s happy.

He’s also ten inches taller than you, which he adores. He calls you fun sized and likes how tall he feels next to you (despite the fact that he’s really about average height). Plus your eyes remind him of cat eyes with their beautiful color. He just can’t get enough of them! Also your nails feel so good when you scratch his scalp. It puts him to sleep almost instantly any time you do it.

That said, he is also a nap lover and doesn’t get enough sleep at night either. He loves to cuddle up with you and sleep. The best sleep he gets are those mid afternoon snoozes with you in his arms. He gets more rest in that one hour than he does after a full night’s sleep. It kind of makes him want to give up trying to sleep at a normal hour altogether...

You are both energy drink connoisseurs and whenever Monster comes out with a new flavor, he buys you both some to try. Usually in the AM when you’re both struggling to stay awake. Monster seems to work a bit better than coffee most days anyway. His favorite is definitely the Pipeline Punch and you can’t change my mind.

The perfect date would be going to a local shelter or rescue and picking out a new fur baby! There’s no better bonding experience then getting a pet together, one that will always remind you of the other. Afterwards he’ll ask you to cook something for him while he gets everything for the new baby set up. He absolutely loves your cooking and isn’t afraid to tell you either. After dinner you will both settle down with a movie, your new addition nestled sweetly between you!

Kenma Kozume!!

I mean...he is our resident catboy after all...

Kenma is also a shorty! Well, for a guy at least. He doesn’t really have any reservations about his height, though it is nice to look down at someone for once instead of up. He also definitely likes your laid back attitude because he himself is not known to be extremely energetic. He would much rather kick back and relax than do anything super physical (besides volleyball....maybe).

He enjoys playing with your beautiful long hair and loves to put little braids in it when you two are relaxing together. Especially if he’s stressed out, it’s a good way for him to relieve tension by just focusing on the soft strands of hair between his fingers. He’s not too bad at it either and will sometimes offer to do your hair before you two go out together on dates or press events.

Of course you both treasure personal space and do just fine being apart for short amounts of time. Typically when Kenma is streaming and is focused on video games, you are off doing your own thing. In the end, you always come back together though with the same amount of love and care as before. What’s unique about your relationship is that no amount of distance can hinder it. Even if you were on opposite continents, you’d still be very much in love with one another.

That being said, he does enjoy spending time with you! Whether it’s watching you cook or letting you lay in his lap while he plays his PSP, it’s fun to just sit together without necessarily speaking or interacting. His favorite thing is when you fall asleep on him while he’s playing a game. It brings the biggest smile to his face every time. He doesn’t have much time for napping but definitely puts time aside to be with you while you do.

A perfect date I believe would be getting manicures together. Kenma is well groomed and isn’t fragile when it comes to his masculinity. He likes for his hands to look nice on camera and he also loves your nails. He would pay any amount to make you happy, so go wild! If you’re lucky he might even get matching polish! 

Megumi Fushiguro!!

He’s just so pretty

Megumi is fairly laid back and tends to keep his cool in most situations. He’s not overly expressive but that’s okay a your are intuitive enough to be able to read what he is thinking or feeling at any given time. As a fellow introvert, he quite enjoys your company and the two of you have an ability to convey your feelings without speaking verbally. This means that you are the one person he is most relaxed around. He really feels like himself around her and enjoys that you accept him for all that he is and is not.

He is a quiet animal lover and would definitely help you take care of all of your pets. It also isn’t uncommon for him to summon his shikigami to cheer you up whenever you’re down. He also summons his divine dogs to cheer him up when he’s down, which is why whenever you seem home moping with two large dogs on top of him, you know he’s had a rough day. In those instances you’ll make him some of his favorite ginger tea to help him feel better too.

You are both excellent cooks and Megumi loves to work alongside you in the kitchen. Exchanging recipes was how your relationship first blossomed! You both have your own strengths in the kitchen that play well off of each other. And the best part is the wonderful aroma that fills your home with every dish that you make!.

So obviously your perfect date would entail you both cooking your favorite meals together. Megumi would insist on doing most of the work, simply because he wants to be the one treating you and not the other way around. After eating you two would definitely chill on the couch either watching your favorite show or movie and just thoroughly enjoying the peace you seem to bring to one another!

It had been a couple years now since he left home and Duff was just getting by in LA, working a day job and playing with a band that has potential.  He was on his way to work – walking, because he never had any gas money – when he first saw Slash for the first time through the window of the local pet shelter and immediately fell in love.

It's not that Duff was thinking of getting a pet – he was living off of ramen packets and renting a glorified closet, are you kidding? But he saw that catboy lying in a sunny spot by the window, kicking his legs as he flipped through a comic book, and before he knew it Duff was stepping through the shelter's glass doors.

As it turns out, the cat was a panther mix, taller than your average domestic breed with a long, fluffy, black tail and rounded ears poking out through curly hair. Such an exotic pet was uncommon in this part of town, but the caretakers at the adoption center explained to Duff that he was taken in off the street. He hadn’t shared much about his background, only that he went by the name Slash.

Duff asked to meet him and the caretakers warned that Slash was very shy and his behavior could range from aloof to hostile, particularly with strangers. But Duff was undeterred, so they let him into the meet-and-greet room and told him to wait while they asked Slash if he wanted to come out.

When the caretaker walked back into the room with Slash trailing behind, Duff felt like he was on a first date, all nervous smiles and shuffling feet. The caretaker stood by the doorway to offer them some semblance of privacy, and Slash perched himself on the couch across from Duff and watched him with a schooled expression – or at least Duff thought Slash was watching him, it was hard to tell with his fluffy bangs hiding his eyes.

“Why don’t you tell Slash a bit about yourself?” the caretaker prompted Duff, who glanced sheepishly down at his feet before looking back at Slash wearing what he hoped was a friendly grin.

“Hi, I’m Duff, it’s really nice to meet you! Right, uh, I’m originally from Seattle but I moved down here to play music. Right now I’m the bass player for a band called Guns N’ Roses and that's  going really well, which is cool. I, um, also work at a restaurant a few blocks away, I was actually heading to work when I, uh…”

Damnit, Duff, can’t you think of anything more impressive to say? This is one fancy cat, he probably grew up in some Beverly Hills mansion, he’s not gonna want to live with a broke punk rocker…  

A quiet voice interrupted Duff’s thoughts. “The New York Dolls…” Slash said, almost to himself. Duff startled, and realized that Slash’s gaze had dropped to the words on his worn-out t-shirt.

“Yes! Johnny Thunders is a hero of mine,” Duff said, pointing to Johnny on his shirt because it sounded like Slash knew what he was talking about but you never really know with pets – some of them were kept very sheltered. “I love punk music, and I also listen to lots of rock and some other stuff, everything really – the band I’m in now is very rock n roll.” A pointed tooth peeked out of Slash’s mouth, and Duff worried that he might have upset him somehow until he realized that Slash was biting down on a tiny smile.

The caretaker must have noticed as well, because she cautiously asked: “Slash, would you like to go over at sit with Duff for a while?”

Slash didn’t move for a moment, gnawing his lip as he considered and flicking his eyes between the caretaker and Duff, who was on the edge of his seat.

Just when Duff opened his mouth to reassure Slash that he didn’t have to if he didn’t want, Slash slid off his couch and tiptoed over to Duff. He settled on the seat cushion and curled his legs protectively in front of him, then tentatively leaned in until his head was lightly resting against Duff’s arm along the back of the couch.

Duff let out the breath he didn’t realize he was holding and turned to the caretaker with a look of amazement. If her expression was anything to go by, she hadn’t expected Slash to go for it either, but she gave Duff an encouraging smile regardless. Duff reached his other hand up slowly, and gently brushed Slash’s hair away from his face. Slash's cheeks were dark red, but he let Duff look at him without turning away.

They sat like that for a while, Duff lightly combing his fingers through Slash’s thick curls, occasionally brushing against his soft ears, and feeling the warm puff of Slash’s steady, relaxed breaths on his shoulder. It was peaceful, and hopeful, and time seemed to slow down – until Duff glanced at the wall clock and nearly jumped out of his seat.

“I have a shift in fifteen minutes, I need to go.” Duff couldn’t hide the disappointment in his voice. “But, uh, I’d like to come back tomorrow, if that – that is, if you want me to –”

Slash cut off his stuttering with a decisive nod, and a grin of relief lit up Duff’s face as he picked himself up off the couch. He spun around when he reached the door to wave goodbye. Slash returned the gesture with a wiggle of his fingers and a real smile that made Duff flush pink as he ducked into the hallway.

“So, is there any way you could put me on an interested list or something? I promise I’ll be back tomorrow and I just don’t want to… I don’t want to miss my chance, y’know?” Duff asked the caretaker on the way out.

“I’ll be straight with you, Duff, it might be tough for you to get through the approval process given your current employment. Honestly, we were planning to move Slash to a different location soon, in an area where people are more likely to adopt a luxury pet, so to speak. But, in the week I’ve know him, I haven’t seen Slash react so warmly to anyone, and you obviously have your heart set on him… so just come back tomorrow and I’ll see what I can do for you two.”

At first I thought “oh shit, I dunno how to answer a lot of these…” but then I spent 208 minutes in a Labyrinth of the Ancients queue and HERE WE ARE. Thank u frend.  I know I can always count on you to indulge me.

1. What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?

Honestly I just wanted to play a dark-skinned character since my last MMO didn’t let you pick skin colors and I got bored of white being the “default.” And because no one asked, I think if Fal were in our world, he’d be some kind of west asian/native american mix.  Cheekbones for days.

2. Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?

Nope!  Because I didn’t know jack squat about the game until I started playing.

3. How did you choose their name?

I just cherry-picked two names from old english literature and smashed them together.  Falerin in the name of a minor villain in Arthurian legend, and Arcite was a knight in one of the stories told in The Canterbury Tales. I didn’t realize I’d misspelled it until I was a few weeks into playing.  Oops?

4. In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?

Miqo’te culture and society. I really didn’t want to play a catboy, but I was really fascinated by their naming conventions and their identity as a hunting people.  I still would LOVE more info on the Seeker tribes especially. The fact that all 26 tribes have an individual animal totem really has me curious how they would differ culturally. Although I do still think the rigid gender politics among both clans are kinda gross.

5. Is there any significance behind their hair color?

…Not really.  Glossy black hair is pretty with dark skin?

6. Is there any significance behind their eye color?

Dark blue is one of my favorite colors and I thought it’d be quite striking with Fal’s dark skin and angular features. Oh man a brown person with blue eyes someone call a National Geographic photographer.

7. Is there any significance behind their height?

Originally I just wanted to go on the tall end of average midlander height but didn’t want to seem insecure by setting the height bar at max lolololol.  However, once I decided he had some Elezen heritage, it seemed appropriate to make him a few inches taller, so I went with 5'11.  Just don’t tell anyone that his in-game model is still only 5'8, shhhh.

8.What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?

…I really can’t think of anything.

9.Are they based off of you, in some way?

I was actually trying to make him as little like me as possible while still being someone I could enjoy playing.  He still ended up with some of my loneliness and insecurity as well as my love of songs with devastatingly sad lyrics and desire to make my prose a bit too flowery.

10.If they have an LI, how much of their character is tailored to be compatible to that person?

He doesn’t currently have an LI.  As for The Big One that I always bring up; as I went through the MSQ I noticed one of the NPCs was sort of his “type.”  So I borrowed some elements of that  NPC to make an OC (the old flame I‘ve mentioned before…) Then that OC ended up having nothing in common with the original NPC save a couple of physical features.  He’s had two others than I’ve bothered to flesh out, one I made a little too compatible (a hedonistic Keeper girl who got bored with him because they were so similar) and one was not compatible at all (a Seeker merchant who was too old and grounded for him.) I’d actually like to see him end up with a LI that was played by someone else, but romance is usually low on my RP priority list, and I like it to develop organically if it does happen.  

11. Did you know what the OC’s sexuality would be at the time of their creation?

I had a feeling he wasn’t straight…

12. What have you found to be most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art: writing, drawing, edits, etc.)?

Keeping his narrative voice consistent, and writing about the kinds of things that he would prioritize in personal narratives. I know its unrealistic for him to be as eloquent and well-spoken as he is, being raised by a woman from a nomadic tribal culture and not having access to many books, but I can’t help it.  I also know he should be a lot less shy when it comes to matters of sex and love, but I’m just terrible at writing about those.

13.How far past the canon events that take place in their world have you extended their story, if at all?

Not… at… all? I’m not even sure how Fal would have reacted to the whole arc of HW, and now SB.  He’s not a WoL, so I imagine he’s absent from the frontlines of world events.  

14. If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?

1. He might despair at first, but he always finds his way to the silver lining. 2. He’s not afraid of anything or anyone when it comes to social situations.

18. What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?

He lived with the refugees in Little Ala Mhigo for a time after his mother’s tribe cast him out on the outskirts of Wellwick Wood (!!!)

19. What is your favorite fact about your OC?

The whole reason his backstory developed the way it did is because of a dream I had the night I started the game.  I saw Fal standing in one of the roads in the shroud, readying his bow and backed by a swarm of glowing red bees that seemed to be under his command.  So, I gave him a cute little bee spirit friend with the intention of it being totally useless and inconsequential.  Then I switched from BRD to SMN and started absorbing more in-game lore, and thought “what if the bee were like an -egi, only not an egi but some kind of spirit that fused its energy with his?” and now I have all these ideas in my head that I haven’t written down and that only make sense to me.
