it’s so amusing to be watching shows/reading the source material after the initial hype wave and having a totally different experience compared to what i have learned via observing what people who are swept up in the online discussion have been talking about…

oomf made a good point abt how for a lot of shows it can be boiled down to a majority of people in online spaces are too caught up in shipping or misrepresenting something so people are inclined to read/watch. it’s so fascinating just to have an outsider perspective on these things.

also it’s very fun to discuss a current popular show w a variety of ppl like — boomer coworker whose kids downloada shows for her so she doesn’t get a virus again (help 😭) vs mutuals online vs friends my age who use social media & those who don’t…! i get a good variety of topics from these ppl tht i wouldn’t see just sticking to the one thing and it moves discussions away from being limited or looped back to shipping as someone like myself who simply doesn’t engage w media this way

anyway yeah point is things couldn’t be more night and day sometimes

was talking with a friend about how some of dunmeshi fаndom misunderstands kabru's initial feelings towards laios.

to sum up kabru's situation via a self-contained modernized metaphor:

kabru is like a guy who lost his entire family in a highly traumatic car accident. years later he joins a discord server and takes note of laios, another server member who seems interesting, so they start chatting. then laios reveals his special interest and favorite movie of all time is David Cronenberg's Crash (1996), and invites kabru to go watch a demolition derby with him

complaining about dungeon meshi as i said i was gonna do in prev post's tags. i rly am incredibly sick of how Shipping has become the centric focus of this series and -- even as someone who generally prioritises f/f when i think about romance in media -- how post-anime farcille is being held up by its fans. like i have been a fan of DM for 6 years i have not seen anyone talk about shipping like this until the anime started coming out

earlier i saw a post talking about how pushback against farcille feels like... suspicious or whatever bc it's the first Big Thing with the biggest pairing being f/f, and i get what it's trying to say, but i also inherently disagree with it. i don't think this is a misogyny issue i think this is an issue more than anything of dungeon meshi being so noticeably and genuinely really, really compelling in itself, so it being swallowed by shipping is more apparent than it would be with like.... idk seasonal anime #48 with yaoi focus. and so people are going to be loud about it when this happens. i think it's rly moreso just the fact that there's Ship Focus in general than it being about a f/f pairing specifically

although honestly, even if it's not about it being f/f specifically, there IS something to be said regarding how fans of it are handling the pairing that makes it particularly grating. this is not a case of "people overextrapolating for it" for this ship as the post said. i have seen people say farcille is the heart and center of dunmeshi and that their love is the focus of it. i have seen people infer that laios and the rest of his party's efforts mean nothing, because it's marcille who had the greatest hand in everything and she did what she did for falin's sake. that is not overextrapolating. that is corroding the story from the inside out because people want to make it about romance when it's not.

i also think that the way farcille fans have been treating the characters around them gets very odd. like for a big one i'm thinking abt the dismissal of laibru as "two guys standing next to each other" or whatevre ppl have been pulling out for farcille bc it is ridiculous and goes back to what i complained abt in prev post's tags re: alnst with how not everything is MID yaoi vs GODLY yuri. sometimes the m/m pairing is good. the two of them are intentional foils and build a close friendship by the end of the series. their relationship is compelling and to dismiss it to hype farcille shows a lack of understanding of the text you're fighting for.

it also tends to approach... at the very least, lacking a sense of intersectionality. this isn't just Yaoi V. Yuri. kabru, who is the centre of both dunmeshi's most popular m/m pairings, is a brown man. put against a white f/f pairing since because people keep insisting on engaging in some stupid yaoi v yuri war, and he gets thrown under the bus a lot here for that. (not to say the pairings he's part of don't have any issues with how fans portray them, but farcille fan hostility towards pairings that both end up involving him can... approach a weird place.) ((on that note the insane hostility they extend towards toshiro is also really nuts. again. think for a sec before you address this moc you feel is like... threatening your white f/f pairing.)

i have a quastion. what is dungeon meshi like i’ve considered watching the anime since it looks amusing…. i trust you as an authority on this hence why i’m in your asks :3c

Dungeon Meshi is so good!!!

So Ryoko Kui (the author of the manga) is a super super great artist and writer in general, and her knowledge of intimate and expansive worldbuilding, including the cultures of different fantasy races is VERY apparent in dunmesh without being super in your face. It strikes a perfect balance between showing and implying and telling; giving you information when you need it but not holding your hand throughout the process. Ecology and biology of creatures and the places (mostly dungeons but yk) is SUPER important and expanded upon in the story. It scratches my Creature autism SOOO well. And all of the characters are VERY distinct and fun AND THE DESIGNS FUCK SOOO HARD. Dungeon Meshi has become one of my favorite series of all time, because it's so. so fucking profound. There are a LOT of funny moments and gags but there's an equal amount of genuinely serious and emotional moments. The character dynamics. GOD. Cannot recommend it enough.

Also. Dungeon Meshi is super fucking horny. LMAO. Not in a "fanservice-y" way (in fact, there is only ONE character that ever gets upskirt/panty shots and it is Senshi, the bearded dwarf man. He's my fave btw <3). But dunmeshi uses consumption (and to a lesser/technical extent cannibalism as well) as a... metaphor for love and obsession, and frequently eroticizes it. I hesitate to say metaphor because it's honestly VERY obvious lmao. Especially with how genuinely autistic Laios is about monsters and eating them. Then there's also transformation and change that's also VERY eroticized. A lot of the focus of Dungeon Meshi is desire. How people experience it, and just how far people will go for it. Which, again, is super eroticized a LOT. All done in a tasteful(? not sure if this is the right word but yk) way and not in a surface level "LOOK, SEX!!!!!!!!!" way. Not that there's anything inherently WRONG with being horny and not being like profound about it but I'm just trying to make a point lol

Now to specifically talk about the anime since that's what you mentioned wanting to watch (though I REALLY reccommend the manga, it is fucking GORGEOUS and there are so many hilarious panels that haven't been brought over to the anime, despite how well it's been doing with that so far. It just happens with turning a manga into an anime yk?)! It's doing a really good job so far!! The only issues I have are relatively nitpicky (I've gone into detail abt it if you wanna see here) and more of an issue with modern anime overall so! They're doing a really great job of translating over from the page to the screen and the voice acting work (both the original japanese and english dub) is really fucking good. And I don't typically like modern english dubs. The layout of the episodes is really nice so far too, centering around the "dish/es of the day" without feeling too constrictively like your typical "monster of the week" type episodes. It helps that Dungeon Meshi as a media itself strikes a really good balance between that and its storytelling. Though again. Laios is genuinely SO fucking autistic about monsters and eating them lmao and the series focuses on him/his party so! There's so much good in depth discussion about monsters, both their biology (especially in relation to their taste hehe) as well as their natures, and ecology!

I'm also really a fan of netflix releasing the episodes weekly instead of dropping them all at once. It's refreshing coming from netflix specifically considering their... track record.

But anyway yeah! TYSM Marty for coming to me about this and letting me go on an autistic talk about it!! I only apologize for not being more specific, but a lot of my dunmesh posting (reblogs anyway since I'm pretty sure the posts I've MADE about it have been relatively vague??) is already pretty spoilery and I'm a firm believer in a first watch/read being as spoiler free as possible!! It makes subsequent rewatches/rereads all the more fun to me personally <3 Though that's obviously up to you lol

Shadow Rouge - Chancery's childhood friend turned boyfriend turned husband. Dragon. basically 40s-50s

Flare Rouge - Chancery and Shadow's eldest son, a major protagonist in CCSAU. Balance wizard. 24

Flint Rouge - Flare's twin brother, younger by 3 minutes :P

Spark Rouge - Chancery & Shadow's eldest daughter. 18??

Steele Rouge - Spark's twin sister.

Poacher - A mercenary, big game hunter, and all around tough but cool guy. Also a dragon. 50s but I think this dude transcends time he just doesn't die lol. A very old oc, I don't remember much about him.

Coal - All of Poacher's LV distilled into a separate entity. Not that bad. In fact, he comes off as less threatening than ol' Poach. Anime boy twunk guy. I cannot picture him as anything older than 26 but surely he's older than that. Much to figure out and rebuild.

Nora Gem - my main Wizard, the Scion in Corrupted Spiral who went astray. Now some unholy mix of human, divine, bogeyman, and Lost. Storm wizard. 28. Probably dating Renee.

Agnes Chastity-Crane - a crane in Night Forest who begins investigating the odd mana left in the wake of people questing through Lemuria's story. Also accidentally invented guns :D. 20s.

Mark Moonfisher - my interpretation of that one Schismist soldier in Karamelle, Novus, and the Test Realm raid. Because Arc 4 doesn't happen normally in my AU, his story ends up different. Sharkperson (specifically spiny dogfish) who was born to gamer but forced to minor/nonexistent npc.

Ruthless Dirk - my main Pirate, swashbuckler, Karamellian fae disguising emself as a human, grew up in Skull Island. 22.

'Fair' Sarah Paisley - my original Pirate, witchdoctor (with a LOT of creative liberty because KI didn't have sensitivity), grew up in Krokotopia but lived in Skull Island. 28.

hey im gonna talk abt my dungeon meshi headcanons, specifically: marcille & farin are in love & gonna end up together under the cut

SPOILERs for dungeon meshi, which you should all read.

ok lets start from when they were back in school

after marcille was tellin the gang how she and farin met (they became best friends back in magic school!!) laius (farin’s brother) comments that farin would write to him abt marcille 

to which HER RESPONSE IISSSS

a big old blush n then getting very excited and re-invigorated to go find farin!!!

(they were very cute in school btw) 

anyway skipping ahead to when they find farin’s remains in the red dragon, theyre all faced w/ the realization that there would be no feasible way to get a resurrection cleric down there to revive farin because her remains were just so degraded. its here that marcille reveals her ACTUAL discipline... highly illegal dark magic. 

we get an idea of HOW illegal & taboo it is in Chapter 37, when laius tells his former teammate, and the guy in love with farin, sureau about using dark magic and his response is to literally try and kill laius 

everyone else’s reaction mirrors his  horror 

so you get the idea pretty fast just how serious of a thing marcille did to save farin. 

Which, speaking of.... when marcille wakes up after passing out during the resurrection.... n she sees farin.....

look me in the eyes n try 2 tell me marcille does not love farin so damn much

anyway the entire beginning of the next chapter is them being hmmmmmmmmmm pretty goddamn gay

keep in mind im really not “picking and choosing” these panels above besides cutting out extra detail shots for the sake of fitting it in this post. what im saying is every suggestive bit here is commmmpletely in tact in the chapter itself.

anyway as this goes on farin also highlights how extreme of a thing marcille did for her 

i really love how marcille then lectures farin w/ her boobs out. and that a panel specifically focuses on farin blushin. anyway.

farin loves her goofy elf girlfriend. 

anyway later in that chapter they share a bed together, which is also something theyve done before???? which yes is v cute n all but also, im just saying, a very specific thing to put in that the author totally didnt have to 

theyre really, really cute

farin disappears again after this, so theres nothing too significant in the middle chapters i can think of..... and i dont have the time to comb through it again.

but without a doubt, farin and marcille are the most affectionate towards each other out of everyone in the group. they are also the characters w/ the most fleshed out backstories & bond. ryoko kui, the author, absolutely focuses more on them than ANY other characters.

i mentioned sureau at the beginning of this post as the guy who was mentioned to be in love with farin. he was a party member before the events of dungeon meshi, and it’s mentioned he wanted to propose to her before she was eaten. now this seems like this sets up sureau as farin’s love interest, except the plot seems to be setting up sureau to abandon his search for farin. 

(SPOILERS FOR THE MOST RECENT CHAPTER 37) 

farin returns as a harpy, slaughtering all of sureau’s retainers, much to sureau’s shock

since the chapter ends abruptly, there’s no way to know how sureau feels about all this. however his opinion on the rescue situation is already soured RIGHT before w/ the conversation about using dark magic resurrection (seen above when he threatened to kill laius). 

there’s one other hint in chapter 36 as well, where it’s revealed one of sureau retainers is in love with him

as well as a little knock against how sureau and farin’s kid would look like

i could see sureau giving up on farin after this, especially after the harpy attack. the next chapter will be released in october, so who knows! we’ll see more about it then. 

anyway, this post is super long and rambling but i honestly, truly believe marcille and farin will end up together by the end of dungeon meshi. i believe it in my bones.
