Oh look its my tags.
It's actually a phenomenon you see often in museums (hence my own research into it) that when it comes to conservation and restoration (and museums in general) people tend to have very black and white views... when they don't know the details of an object.
One of my professors who has been a conservator for years actually ran a study once (which i am basing my own off of) where they had people vote for if a 17th century piano should be restored to be able to play it again or not. At first there was a lot of firm agreement for restoring it, with a lot of the same responses in the tags. "its meant to be played" "its a functional item" "ur just letting it rot"
The exhibit then went on to explain that to make the piano playable again, they would have to completely replace all of the mechanisms inside the piano, replace an entire leg to make it stable enough to sit at, multiple keys which had been worn down from decades of people playing them that held the history of the people who loved it would need to be removed and replaced. That to be able to use the piano again, it would essentially need to become a entirely new one.
The end of the exhibit then encouraged people to once again vote on if the piano should be restored to being functional again and the answers saw a dramatic shift. There were some who were still staunchly for or against, of course, but having the history of the object laid out for them tended to help a lot of people realize that theres maybe a bit more to an object in a museum than if it still works or not.
Functional objects are meant to be functional, yes, but there is so much more nuance when it comes to historical objects. A violin in a collection might not be able to be able to played anymore, but the frayed bow, worn frets, and battered strings show the love and history that object contains. A clock might not tick anymore, but the mechanisms inside still have the fingerprints of the creators what were smudged on them with grease and oil when they were hand carved and placed inside. These decisions are not made lightly, and the historic value of an object and its materials should always be weighed against the value of it still fuctioning, especially in regards to objects like clocks which can easily have replicas made.
Museums are meant to keep the records of history. To keep objects around for future generations to study and learn and grow from. That is why we are constantly debating these ethical considerations. Its why we carefully weigh the concept of keeping something functioning vs keeping the original pieces. The concept of replicas vs replacements. We have to weigh the cost of keeping something running as well, as museums, despite what people seem to think (with the exception of maybe a dozen or so big musuems), are chronically underfunded, especially when it comes to collections care. There is no right or wrong answer, no way we can make everyone in this scenario happy. All we can do is try our best to preserve the history of an object in the best ways we can so that it can be around for others to learn from in the future.

Due to budgetary constraints we do not have the resources for any Ship of Theseus bullshit and we have chosen death over continuity.

Hi, I'm not sure if this is something you're able to answer, but I'm interested in getting a career in numismatics, specifically in regards to ancient Rome. I'm currently getting a BA in history with a focus on ancient Rome. Do you have any information/advice on next steps or field requirements? Thank you for your time!
Hello! What a great question! Careers in numismatics take a number of different forms, so I’ll do my best to offer you some insight into the options, and then tell you what I know about my experience of getting work in the field.
My guess is, if you are getting a BA in history, that you are probably most familiar with the academic track(s) that are out there. Most numismatists of this sort are either professors (for ancient material, they are either in History or Classical Studies departments) or museum curators or staff of some kind. There are a also handful of private numismatic organizations that also have staff and curators (orgs like the American Numismatic Society come to mind). For pretty much all these options, it would be expected that a numismatist would have an advanced degree, typically a PhD, in history, classics, or archaeology, with emphasis and skills developed through specific numismatic training (learning to do things like die studies, metallurgical analysis, hoard studies, or conservator/preservation work). There are summer schools for graduate students to gain this experience, sometimes with funding. If you go the curatorial track, getting experience volunteering as well as a degree will be expected, and if you can handle the chemistry, training in conservation is a big plus for job prospects.
Taking a more archaeological track, there are also posts for numismatists in the field. Coins coming out of the dirt need to be cleaned and IDed quickly and accurately. Most of these people also have advanced degrees and/or other academic jobs (since archaeology is mostly a summer gig in the northern hemisphere), but there are also emergency excavation companies who might need a numismatist from time to time. I’ve known people with MA degrees in archaeology who worked with these companies in Europe, but they weren’t specifically numismatists.
Finally, there’s work in more commercial fields. Coins appeal to collectors, who want coins identified and sold by professionals, and companies exist to ID, grade, and auction coins. If getting an advanced degree (and learning Greek and Latin, which comes with the territory) is beyond your immediate reach, working for an auction house or coin grading company could be a good fit. You can also look into the American Numismatic Association’s summer school program, which I believe gives more support to BA students and to collectors.
Whatever path you choose, volunteering to help catalogue collections with university or museum collections is a great way to get experience and, for the academic options, getting ideas for conference talks and publications. The more you can handle coins, ancient or otherwise, and the more coinages you have worked with closely, the better your odds of being taken seriously as a “professional,” whatever that means for you. You can also follow academic numismatists on the site formerly known as twitter and see what they are up to to learn more.
For myself, I’m a numismatist, but I’m employed as a history professor. Coins are just one of my specializations, and while I love them, I understand that to work, I have to be both a generalist and a specialist. Even in academia, few numismatists are exclusively numismatists. Keep your mind open and look for ways to bring your love of coins into other kinds of work and conversations and you will find your way.
P.S. It’s also okay to love a thing without making it your job… I know that can be hard to hear especially as an undergrad trying to figure out what to do with your life, but like, the surest way to stop loving a thing is to have to do it, or else. Hobbies are good and, with coins, there’s a huge, healthy community to share your love with.
P.P.S. I work on a couple of digital numismatic projects that could use qualified volunteers (undergraduates are great for this kind of thing, especially if we can coordinate with your professors to get you course credit). If you’d like to get involved, especially if you have some digital humanities skills, reach out off anon and we can chat it through.

Not to be annoying, but I'd be curious what you think about Warframe; it's primarily a shooter but it has a bunch of minigames (obligatorily fishing, mining, skateboarding, animal conservation, decorating/constructing, guitar) and sometimes I see tension between the player bases who come to it for different reasons, which I always find interesting
that's actually a great example, I have almost a thousand hours in Warframe from back in high school but I haven't played it consistently since a little after Plains of Eidolon, I do have some Thoughts. Some of this is theoretical only because e.g. I never used the whole star chart relay system, I had already unlocked the map by then.
Warframe kind of goes the other way, it requires you to engage with all its many mechanics in order to progress through its storyline quests and to collect the necessary resources for crafting, but it generally makes several difficulty levels available so that you can curate your own experience, but only after trying everything. You can choose to screw around on the Plains in the level 2 missions and never touch the level 5 missions as long as you don't mind never unlocking one specific Warframe.
If you want to go absolutely hardcore, you can sit in endless missions for hours racking up resources and only run the most meta kitguns and trade in thousand-platinum Riven mods and use the Steel Path thing to double your difficulty and rush through the toughest open world missions to rank up. Doing this helps you fund the array of niche mods and resources you need to keep up at this level.
If you're me you putter around in level 50 solo exterminations and defense missions having fun pretending to be the world's most annoying sniper and digging out a few dozen gems here and there and taking like two months to hit max rank with the giant sexy mom alien. You'll get a decent array of frames and guns and some Riven mods and one or two will even be useful and that's all you need to keep going.
There's a great Polygon article where someone was talking about the flexibility of the Warframe formula to people who just want to hop in and do something for an hour or two while still serving the people who want to spend six hours in Lua Defense.
It aligns the speed you play well with how much you care about certain things. A slower player gradually makes their way through the story and the reveals are well paced to feel like the exploration of a grand story, the game feels decidedly huge at this pace. A fast meta player who wants to deal 100 000 damage with a single Lex shot can basically speed run their quests, and you can choose where on this spectrum you want to exist (I am a fairly slow player and my Lex shots only deal 50 000 damage but I have enough resources from years of play to bankroll a small clan)
In as much as there is conflict between these players, it's usually higher end players annoyed that the devs cater to "less committed" newer players, instead of giving them more endgame options. People complain so much any time a new weapon is released and it can't be made to one-shot a level 200 Ancient. I remember the Quartakk Discourse.
There are tools to push players into engaging with higher level play, namely the tougher specialist enemies like nullifiers and ancients, but even they are pretty trivial for even casual players to deal with.
It borrows heavily from MMORPG language and design to create an environment where multiple different kinds of player can choose what they want to do, heck, they used to have super difficult and extremely precise eight-player Raids that awarded extremely useful and rare loot.
The solution from the devs seems to be "look, we just build the thing", Warframe more than many other games is extremely hands off in the difficulty department. Famously, they do not pull any punches dynamically during gameplay, if you get swarmed by enemies in a level they all want to kill you, there's no bulking out crowds with inactive enemies the way other PvE games might. If you wanted less of a challenge you should have picked a lower level mission.
I'm really interested by the design challenge of games like The Sims, Skyrim, Minecraft, anything where the game has to suit a wide variety of players who may all wish to do completely different things in a world with consistent rules. They all solve this differently.
The Sims is actually like a dozen minigames running simultaneously, piled on top of each other and carefully segmented from each other so that you could totally miss most of them as you pursue what you're interested in. The games are broadly similar in some ways so that you can transfer from one to another smoothly, which means your choices don't affect gameplay as much as they affect the game's supporting narrative. There are notable differences in playing The Sims as a cottagecore farmer versus a high powered city businessman but not actually as many as you might expect.
Skyrim builds a world where there are many ways to do the same tasks and they're all given relatively equal weight, which means your first run through always feels pretty good but if you try a different style of play it feels pretty samey, lots of breadth, very little depth. Skyrim dungeons actually have some very interesting design but the design is always so balanced that it never forces a thief to just go fucking ham nor forces a fighter to go away and look for a specific scroll or staff.
Minecraft has a very clear idea of what it wants players to do, but it knows it has to cater to a huge range of players from "literal toddler" to "twitch streamers building dropper farms that produce 100 000 gunpowder a minute" and so they gently try to corral new players up to more advanced play while simultaneously forcing experienced players to actually engage with their carefully crafted mechanics.
(And despite all this, these are all games people mod to hell because they want it to play the way they think is best.)

My knowledge about what a Museum Curator does is very limited and most of what I know is from Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, and The Mummy.
So, really not a lot.
But because Diana Prince works for the Louvre, I’ve now looked it up. Wikipedia writes:
Traditionally, a curator or keeper of a cultural heritage institution (e.g., gallery, museum, library, or archive) is a content specialist charged with an institution's collectionsand involved with the interpretation of heritage material.
A traditional curator's concern necessarily involves tangible objects of some sort—artwork, collectibles, historic items, or scientific collections. More recently, new kinds of curators have started to emerge: curators of digital data objects and biocurators.
[snip]
In larger institutions, the curator's primary function is that of a subject specialist, with the expectation that he or she will conduct original research on objects and guide the organization in its collecting. Such institutions can have multiple curators, each assigned to a specific collecting area (e.g., curator of ancient art, curator of prints and drawings, etc.) and often operating under the direction of a head curator. In such organizations, the physical care of the collection may be overseen by museum collections managers or museum conservators, and documentation and administrative matters (such as personnel, insurance, and loans) are handled by a museum registrar.
[snip]
Curators hold a high academic degree in their subject, typically a Doctor of Philosophy or a master's degree in subjects such as history, history of art, art, archaeology, anthropology, or classics.[6][7][8] Curators are also expected to have contributed to their academic field, for example, by delivering public talks, publishing articles, or presenting at specialist academic conferences.[6] It is important that curators have knowledge of the current collecting market for their area of expertise, and are aware of current ethical practices and laws that may impact their organisation's collecting.[9][10]
Here’s the link to additional qualifications for the Louvre itself.
The curators assigned to the Louvre automatically become part of the wider organization encompassing France's recognized "national museums".  Because the Louvre's eight departments are officially recognized heritage bodies, their curators are expert advisers on all cultural property in circulation: this extends to acquisitions being made by regional museums and the preparation of reports on "national treasures". This latter term covers any item of cultural property which, given its value as part of the national heritage, may not, under the terms of legislation passed in 1992 , be removed from French territory.
As recognized specialists in their fields, the curators contribute to the international outreach of the Louvre's collection: they speak at international conferences; teach at the Louvre School, the Institut National du Patrimoine, the Institute for the Restoration of Works of Art, the Ecole Normale Supérieure, and various universities; sit on examination boards; and publish papers in their field of expertise.
So, now I can’t help but think of Diana attending academic conferences and her, probably, impressive body of published articles. I can imagine Diana having a few PhDs under her belt, and as part of her job is to secure artifacts:
Whatever their field—archaeology or paintings, for example—curators are responsible for the safety of the works in their department's collection and the premises where they are housed. This entails an almost daily round of maintenance visits with museum security chiefs: technical and logistics heads, fire officers, and attendants working in the galleries and reserve collections. These visits are accompanied by checks of the alarm systems, the showcases, the hung works, and the overall state of the displays. Before being hung, placed in a showcase, lent out to an exhibition, or loaned to another museum or institution, all works are given a "health check." When restoration is required, the curator gives an expert opinion and takes the necessary decisions, notably on the extent of the restoration.
This might be the reason why Diana was in London, when she actually works for the Louvre. Maybe the Louvre lent a collection to them and Diana accompanied and supervised the exhibit?
I hope fandom plays around more about Diana being a Museum Curator, and how she might be pretty popular in certain circles of her work, with a lot of students clamoring to get into a lecture with Diana Prince.
Maybe one or two visiting lecturers love to have spirited discussions with Diana, especially about an article she wrote from three years ago. The possibilities are endless!

3. Audit your material
While lots of content advertising and marketing technique guides advise a material audit, a great deal of companies miss this action. Some, because they only have a couple of pieces of material and also others because they have a ton of it.
Despite just how much-- or exactly how little-- background your business has with web content advertising, conduct a material audit. It's an essential action to developing a web content advertising and marketing approach. The results offer insight into your past techniques and also can also offer suggestions for future material.
Total a material audit with the adhering to actions:
Develop a web content stock: A material supply serves as a directory as well as consists of the content LINK. Sometimes, you may include the material's heading and sub-headings. You can produce a content stock with a device like Shouting Frog, and after that export the data to a spreadsheet.
Catalog content topic: When you have your spread sheet, identify the ContentLAB. For optimum documents, note the web content kind and topic, such as a 500-word how-to blog post or 800-word service web page.
Quality material: Next off, quality each piece of content. Think about the high quality of writing, as well as the content's significance as well as accuracy for audiences today. Testimonial the material's company, tone, and also visuals as well, as you desire it to match your existing branding.
Log material performance: The last detail to consist of in your spreadsheet is the material's performance. A couple of metrics to include are the quantity of traffic earned by the website, along with the bounce rate and also interaction of individuals, which you can find in Google Analytics.
Use the results of your material audit to build your web content advertising strategy. What does your past material do well that you 'd like to include or stay clear of in future material? Or, just how can you repurpose that content to line up with your new material advertising goals?
4. Write your web content standards
For services brand-new to content advertising and marketing, this concern doesn't supply a simple response. It requires time and preparation, as your group requires to develop standards for producing and also releasing your business's web content.
As a result, lots of firms skip the suggestion to compose a collection of ContentLAB. It's vital that your business does not neglect this step. Without standards, you can affect the top quality of your method, in addition to its effect on your goals.

Cosmos Q&A: Why we must value parasites
Parasites don’t get great PR or a lot of consideration when we’re talking conservation. An international team hopes to change that, however, and has published a paper in the journal Biological Conservation laying out a global plan to protect them, including 12 specific goals for the next decade.
Cosmos spoke to Melinda Moir from the University of Western Australia, an entomologist with a background in invertebrate conservation, who was invited to be a part of the working group.
You appear to have joined a support group for parasites. Please explain yourself.
Unfortunately, parasites are vastly under-represented in the conservation sphere, with only a handful represented on official conservation lists like the IUCN red list. This is despite published estimates of one in every three parasite species at potential risk of extinction in the next 50 years.
Our group includes people from many different institutions (museums, universities, research centres, government agencies) and countries (US, Panama, Italy, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore) who are all interested in advancing parasite conservation.
While we all recognise that the greatest risk to parasites is co-extinction – loss with their host species or with some change in the host species’ populations – parasite conservation is more complicated than it at first appears. There are many different drivers that are increasing the risk faced by parasites that we have addressed in our 12-step plan to counter parasite extinctions.
From a scientific perspective, what are “parasites”? Do we use that term in the same way that we do “insects” or “birds”?
“Parasite” can encompass a much broader range of taxa than terms such as “bird” or “insect”, as these latter terms are based on taxonomy (the classification of living organisms), whereas “parasite” is a term based on ecology or lifestyle. The term parasite is most often associated with an invertebrate animal that lives on, or in, another animal while feeding from it, such as lice on birds or roundworms in mammals.

However, parasite can actually encompass a much wider range of taxa, from parasitic plants like mistletoe utilising the nutrients of trees, herbivorous insects that eat plants, fungal infections of humans, to vampire bats feeding on mammals. Basically, a parasite is anything that feeds off another living organism (the host), without killing the host organism when the parasite load is low.
Do we fully understand what they do?
Parasites are a large and important part of global biodiversity. We do know that they play important roles in wildlife population control, ecosystem stability and flow, nutrient cycling, and potentially even buffering against the emergence of virulent diseases. There is some evidence of parasites being beneficial for their hosts, such as intestinal parasites possibly helping humans with disorders caused by inflammation of the intestines (e.g., Crohn’s disease), by activating the immune system.
Certainly, those parasites which alter the behaviour of one of their hosts can then benefit other organisms. For example a Nematomorph parasite has been found to alter their host cricket’s behaviour to seek water, which creates a large food supply for an endangered trout in rivers in Japan, accounting for 60% of the trout’s annual energy intake.
Parasites have been described as one of the last frontiers in the world of biodiversity because there are so many species yet to be discovered and aspects of their ecology are still being uncovered. So although we don’t fully understand or even know about the existence of most parasitic species, we do know that most are an essential component of ecosystems.
Why have so few be identified and named?
There are a number of problems here, but one major issue is the lack of parasite taxonomists (scientists who describe species). It isn’t exactly the sexiest job in the world to be discovering new mites, lice or internal worms! So attracting undergraduate students into this realm and away from the cute, the furry and the fluffy animals is difficult. The students most likely to encounter parasites do so from the medical or veterinary or agricultural perspective, where the aim is to eradicate the parasite, to improve the health of the host.
Most parasites are difficult to collect, as collecting them may require harming the host individual. Parasites are often hard to see, and their taxonomy can be very difficult, usually requiring specialist equipment and curation techniques to be able to identify any differences between species. It takes years of study to work in this world, and then there are few jobs worldwide that allow people a full time job of describing new species. A consequence of this is that there are few established mentors in academia grooming the next generation of parasitologists. So the cycle of neglect continues.
Do parasites tend to affect us directly, or indirectly via their impact on other parts of the environment?
Brown Dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus). Credit: Pia Scanlon, Western Australian Agricultural Authority.
An extremely small percentage of parasite species directly impact humans either by parasitising us or our livestock and pets. An even smaller percentage act as vectors to viruses and bacteria, which tend to have more detrimental effects on the host than the parasites themselves do by simply feeding on the host. For example, the Brown Dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) is host to the bacterium Ehrlichia canis, which has just recently arrived in the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Although the tick is present across northern Australia and has limited impact on dog health if in low numbers, the bacterium causes Ehrlichiosis, which can be  fatal.
The extinction of parasites can imbalance the system and then impact humans. A good example of this is general host-tick coextinction in the tropical rainforests of Panama reducing competition. One tick, Amblyomma oblongoguttatum, a vector of spotted fever group rickettsiosis (causing Rickettsia in humans) has become dominant as a consequence. This means that there is more potential for us to catch Rickettsia in these forests because of the lack of a diversity of tick  species.
Do we affect them as much as they affect us? Is that changing?
Our impacts on parasites, either directly or indirectly, far outweigh their negative impacts on us. And unfortunately, this impact is increasing. Up to 10% of parasite species could be threatened by climate change alone, and when you add in co-extinction risk (the loss of the parasite with the extinction of the host species), this rate jumps to one in every three parasite species being threatened with extinction.
Evidence of the threat faced by parasites is clear in a study that compared seagulls in the 1960s versus today. The scientists found that two thirds of flatworm parasites are now missing, representing a “systematic collapse” of the parasite ecosystem. Parasites are highly threatened because they face a double threat: they’re sensitive on their own to disturbances like climate change or habitat loss, but are also highly threatened with extinction if their host experiences reductions in population size or density. But parasites are still mostly neglected by conservation research and practice. Furthermore, as some recent cases have uncovered, we are actually to blame for increasing the impacts of parasites on humans, as in the example of the coextinction of ticks in Panama  above.
Can you conserve or save parasites in the same way that you do endangered wildlife? Do we need to save them, or just get out of their way?
Red mistletoe (Peraxilla tetrapetala). Credit: Michal Klajban
Parasites need active management on several fronts, and we need to stop actively trying to eliminate them from the ecosystem. Currently, the management of many threatened species of potential host (plant, vertebrate) includes actively removing the host species from their natural environment and/or actively removing the parasites through pesticides or anti-parasitic drugs. For instance, to conserve the Tasmanian devil, insurance populations against the deadly Devil Facial Tumour Disease have been necessary, but this management has also included the routine use of anthelmintics. Luckily, this practice has now been stopped in recognition of the need to also conserve the devils’ parasitic fauna.
Every effort should be made to survey the parasite diversity on these highly threatened hosts. Once a parasite is identified as being threatened, it should feature on conservation lists such as the IUCN Red List. Threatened parasites may need adaptive management just as their threatened host do. For example, the tuatara tick has been translocated with its host the New Zealand tuatara lizard. However, scientists subsequently found that tick populations were declining despite the tuartara population remaining stable. The problem appeared to be that the density of tuatara was too sparse for the tick. This example is quite typical; the loss of the parasite occurs before the host because of a change in the host species population [The genome of the tuatara lizard has just been sequenced. Read the Cosmos report here.]
Our new global plan encompasses such remedial efforts within 12 goals for the next decade that could advance parasite biodiversity conservation through an ambitious mix of research, advocacy, and management. These goals fall within four categories: data collection and synthesis, risk assessment and prioritisation, conservation practice, and outreach and education.
What is the appeal in studying parasites? What’s your elevator pitch to the next generation of scientists?
Parasites are one of the few great unknowns in biodiversity where young scientists can really make their mark. It is almost impossible to discover a new bird, mammal or amphibian in the world today; however, there are likely to be numerous undescribed parasites just in your backyard – whether that be microscopic parasitic wasps laying eggs in other insects feeding on your vegies in the garden, or the internal worm of the little brown honeyeater nesting in the backyard tree. And many parasites are weird and wonderful, changing their host’s behaviour, morphology or colour – if you like being at the forefront of science, this field is definitely for you.
Is this work part of what we now hear called disease ecology?
Cephalotes atratus infected with Myrmeconema neotropicum. Credit: George Poinar Jr.
Parasitism is a large component of disease ecology, but work on parasites is called parasitology and is a world unto itself. Disease ecology largely evolved around infectious disease and, set against a backdrop of pandemics, veterinarians and treatment, often has negative connotations associated with parasites. So although the theory of disease ecology can help to inform mechanisms of transmission of parasites across host individuals, it is at odds with parasite conservation becomes it comes from a different perspective of eliminating the parasite rather than conserving it.
What’s your favourite parasite story or memory?
Recently I was told by a colleague of the South American nematode Myrmeconema neotropicum, which lives inside the black ant Cephalotes atratus. The nematode requires two hosts to complete its lifecycle; an ant and a bird. To move from the ant to the bird, the nematode changes the ant’s black abdomen to resemble a red berry, and the bird consumes the berry-abdomen plus nematode.
Much closer to home, I’m worried for the Numbat acanthocephalan or spiny-headed worm (Multisentis myrmecobius). It requires two hosts to complete its lifecycle, the numbat and an invertebrate, most likely termites, as these are the main food source of numbats. Currently, all translocated numbats are treated for this spiny-headed worm, which has only been found in one population of the endangered numbat at Dryandra in southwest Australia.
Although the worm isn’t recognised on any conservation lists, it is highly likely that it is either critically endangered or extinct. No one has, however, assessed the threat status of the worm, despite one of its hosts being an iconic threatened Australian marsupial. This particular example highlights the complex, unseen and perilous nature of parasite  existence.
