2024
These last few weeks of the year have been a bit of a roller coaster for me. At least I was able to finish the year on a more positive note, probably because I accomplished some final tasks before the year ended (why is it that winter seems to be the most satisfyingly productive time of year for me?)
Despite feeling busy and preoccupied, I feel like I didn't accomplish as much as I would have liked this year. It felt like most of my time was spent getting into a perpetual cycle of chores and cleanup with no set plan, with some work on personal projects.
That being said, I looked back and was able to find some things I did accomplish:
Getting another chapter of Kaleidoscope Children finished
Started finding some events to attend so I'm not just stuck at home all the time (I got to try an earthquake simulator for the first time!)
Watching the Paralympics properly for the first time (once again, I recommend watching it just to give it more attention!)
More zines: -My Hero Babysitters -Successor: A DadMight Anthology (BNHA) -Tales of the Four Nations Volume 3 (ATLA) -On the Prowl: MSBY4 (Haikyuu!)
And now my resolutions:
Image Descriptions: I will continue to make this my top resolution until I have most (if not all) of them done. Despite not getting around to them this year, I finally decided I will use Alt Text (at least for newer posts, unfortunately it seems like I can't update older posts to add Alt Text so I'll probably just do Image IDs in those descriptions for now)
Stories: Hopefully I can churn out chapters a little more quickly this year after last year's major creative block. I've already started drafting the next couple of chapters of Kaleidoscope Children, and I'm preparing to write the beginning of my second story. I don't have an estimate for further news on the latter, but I hope I can announce something about it later in the new year.
Communication: I really really really want to push myself to make an iota of progress in this direction. I often find excuses to keep my thoughts to myself, but then it hurts me in the long run and I deprive myself the opportunity to make new friends. I want to try to make an effort to be a little more outspoken.
Productivity: I want to get back on track with the tasks I want to get done, and try and minimize postponements. I'll start by making schedules for each month, but without overloading myself. I think it worked at the start of last year before I got sidetracked big time with chores.
Occupation?: Job hunting continued to be disappointing, but I'm reassured by the fact that I'm not the only one who is having issues. Over this past year I've heard more and more people who are struggling with finding or keeping a job (people I know, people I follow, people with a rich resume, people with little to no experience) and more and more I'm getting the advice that education or constant applications will go nowhere, and that volunteering and finding connections is more promising. I've changed my strategy towards this direction, and can only hope that I'll have a little better luck. But first, I need to figure out what I actually want to do for a vocation. With all the application rejections I had to deal with for two years, I spent the past year kinda floating aimlessly, questioning to myself what it is I actually want to do. In the new year, I want to try and sit down with myself and ask myself what it is I would be interested in that feels worthwhile to me or something along those lines. That way I have a plan to focus on instead of puttering vaguely between multiple interests but not sticking to a gameplan. I think part of my ongoing stress is the pressure to find a job, but not having any idea where to start.
Relax! Despite the hurdles, I think I did a little better at this than last year. I just need to not overload myself with a lot of plans, nor stress myself with lofty expectations. Things will come with time, though they will also come easier with some added strategy besides simply waiting for it (something about catching fish better with a bait than with an empty lure...?)

Next year will be uncertain. But no matter what happens, there will always be people who will work hard to protect what's good in the world. Even when times get tough, it won't mean people have stopped striving towards this. I will continue to draw and create things that hopefully make some sort of positive difference to the world, however little that contribution may be, for as long as I can. Whatever happens, we're in this together.
Please take care of yourself. Take a break from the news once in a while. Find activities and communities that bring you joy. Watch videos of puppies (or whatever animals give you comfort). Take time away from social media if you need to. Do whatever it takes to make the foreseeable future a little less awful.

Behind the reflective surface of his horn-rimmed glasses, Grummanâs eyes shift to the foot of Alphonseâs bed where Izumiâs cookbook sits open. âYour just deserts, as it were,â he adds with a smirk.
Alphonse doesnât have to ponder what their plans are.
âAll we want is to go home, sir, to Resembool,â Alphonse answers. He smiles to lighten the mood; loose skin pulls around the corners of his grin. âAnd Iâd also like to see a few friends. Maybe try some of the foods from my list before we leave Central."

A/N: I'm incredibly excited to share the fic I wrote for @fmacookbookzine, Tastes of Amestris! Most of the desserts mentioned in the story have recipes in the cookbook. I owe a special thanks to the zine moderator as well as my betas, Tas and @vino-and-doggos. I appreciate kudos, bookmarks, subscriptions, comments, likes, and reblogs if you feel so inclined.
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. The repair becomes part of the objectâs history and enhances its beauty.

There is a plate in the china cabinet of Pinakoâs kitchen that Alphonse likes best. It looks the same as the others with pale pink vines looping along the fluted rim. Yet, this particular piece is set apart from the rest. Once cracked in half, Alphonseâs favorite plate has a vein of gold that binds the fractured parts together.
He was there when it happened on Winryâs sixth birthday. Ms. Sarah assembled an unorthodox birthday dessert in honor of the occasion, an elegant presentation of fresh berries, whipped cream, and puffs of baked meringue. The final touch was a pinch of mint, and once combined, Winry gazed excitedly at her motherâs handiwork stacked atop the fine china. In her wonder, the childâs footing faltered.
All told, it was an everyday accident that had Pinako tutting softly under her breath as she picked up the pieces; however, precious little went to waste in the Rockbell householdâa place where broken things (and sometimes people) came to be restored. With the conscience of a healer and the precision of a surgeon, Granny carefully glued the jagged edges together with golden lacquer. Raised lines stuck out along the break and dried, leaving the piece even more beautiful for the story it had to tell.
When Alphonse looks in the mirror now, his face also tells a story. Though, he thinks that it is not a tale the hospital staff wants to hear. They are thankful for the large red letters that read âCONFIDENTIALâ stamped across his medical chart. They look away from the sunken eyes and gaunt cheeks that stare back at Alphonse from the mirror Sig is holding for him. Each time Alphonse sees himself, he half expects to confront a gunmetal helmet with half-moon holes glowing red and horizontal vents instead of gutting cheekbones. The reality is disorienting but not unwelcome.
Like the metallic bond holding together his favorite plate, Alphonse likes the way his golden eyes gleam with the satisfaction of seeing his and Edwardâs bodies restored. All except for his brotherâs leg, and perhaps Edward does not regret that loss. It was a price paid-in-full for the people the Elric brothers helped and the lesson they learned, albeit the hard way.
Alphonseâs fingers tremble as he grasps the razor. He glances up from the mirror to the burly bear of a man holding it. âPress the razor to your face and gently pull upward,â Sig kindly instructs. âLet it do the work for you.â
The young man nods and does as instructed, ready to savor the task of shaving for the first time with the most patient person as his teacher. Alphonse takes his first pull of the razor, and it glides across his upper lip with little resistance until, at the very end, his hand trembles again.
He feels a sharp sensation, and while examining his visage in the mirror, Alphonse notices a red mark above the corner of his mouth mingled with traces of shaving cream. Sig holds out a handkerchief.
âYou should have seen my first attempt. You did well,â Sig says with a pleasant grin.
A warmth fills Alphonseâs hospital room, crammed with four people who function as a family, just as they did back in Dublith. Edward reclines on the bed next to his brother with his arms stretched lazily behind his trademark braid. Izumi watches the exchange between her husband and Alphonse with a small smile, barely keeping up the pretense of reading her recipe book. She keeps her vigil at Alphonse and Edâs bedside despite her injuries.
Thereâs a staccato series of knocks on the door. Between the abrupt sound and the sudden appearance of an officer drenched in Amestrian blue, the spell of domesticity is broken. It is replaced by a colder reality: Ed and Alphonse Elric are being kept by the military. They remain unsure who is being protected from whom and to what end.
Their guard straightens up. A sheen of sweat collects on his brows and the collar of his woolen uniform. His voice is strained as he pulls up into a rigid salute to address Ed. The Fullmetal Alchemist cocks his brow incredulously at the formal display.
âSorry to intrude, Major Elric,â the officer finally announces, âMr. Alphonse Elric. You have a visitor.â
âA visitor?â Ed parrots; a sharp remark is already on the tip of his pitchy tongue. âIf itâs that Colonel Bastard, again, you can tell him-â
âItâs not Colonel Mustang,â the officer interrupts. âItâs Genera- I mean FĂŒhrer Grumman.â
The collective attention of the room turns as a shorter, older man emerges from behind the guard. He moves slowly and smiles through his thick, white mustache. The deep blue of his immaculate uniform contrasts the faded fabric of the lower-ranking officer ahead of him. Service ribbons in every color weigh down the left side of the gentlemanâs long jacket.
âActing FĂŒhrer,â he corrects with adroit, disarming syntax. âBut then, weâre all friends here. Who cares about a little thing like formalities?â
...
Alphonse scratches at his freshly shaven upper lip as the usual introductions are observed. It seems that Ed will be doing the talking, and with that in mind, Alphonse expects a brief visit. Nevertheless, Grumman paves the way for pleasantries as well as business. Not five minutes into the discussion, Alphonse realizes that the new acting FĂŒhrer speaks with authority.
It would be wise, Alphonse decides, to listen carefully.
When FĂŒhrer Grumman asks Izumi and Sig to step out for an afternoon cup of tea, the request is not a suggestion. The strong-willed teacher rises with the help of her husband, and the couple leaves begrudgingly. Alphonse grins sympathetically at them as they exit. It bolsters his confidence when Izumi returns his smile with an assertive nod.
Grumman does not hesitate to fill the seat their teacher vacated. Gravity bears down on Alphonseâs frail shoulders, but he sits as tall as he can.
âThe way I hear it, you boys saved the day,â the FĂŒhrer proclaims, flashing a set of pearly whites. âIâd say my government owes you both a debt of gratitude.â
With all the rough-edged diplomacy he can muster, Ed responds. âYeah, well, we didnât do it for the government, old man. And Iâm done being a dog of the military. Whatever plans youâve got in mind, count us out.â
The FĂŒhrerâs reaction is nearly nonexistent. Instead, he leans against the hardback of the chair and immediately winces.
âDreadfully uncomfortable,â he announces, shifting forward. Grumman waves a hand to draw the guard in closer. âBe a helpful lad. See that Mrs. Curtis is given more comfortable seating.â
The young officer scurries off, closing the door behind him, and the older gentleman turns his attention toward Alphonse.
âOh, I understand perfectly. The military will ask nothing further of you if thatâs what you want,â he replies. âBut the situation we find ourselves in is unusualâa conspiracy in the upper echelons of the government, a nation-wide episode of unconsciousness, the condition of Alphonseâs body, and the inexplicable connection it all has to alchemy. These are the sort of concerns that fuel the rumor mill.â
The older gentleman pauses, idly twisting the ends of his mustache between his fingers as he divulges the political landscape of Amestris.

âIt was in a book he used to keep,â Ed explains. His tone softens, as it always does when he speaks of his brother. âIt listed foods he wanted to try when he was inside... Anyway, I think we lost it.â
âI see.â
Grummanâs response is curt. With a final flourish, the old man straightens his cap and rises from the chair. It seems that heâs heard all he needs to hear.
âIâm going to keep an eye on you boys,â he concludes. âJust the one, mind you, for whatever thatâs worth. Itâs a fine idea for you both to return to Resembool. Recuperate and rest, and when you figure out what youâd like to do with your time, give me a call.â
The old man produces an ivory card from the pocket of his uniform; a phone number is scribbled on the front. The card itself is an innocuous thing, but the peace offering reeks of political maneuvering. Ed frowns as FĂŒhrer Grumman places the card on the small table between the brothersâ beds. Alphonse is torn, equal parts intrigued and wary of the strings attached to this phone number.
âThe good people here tell me that Alphonse will be ready to travel in four months,â Grumman continues. âIn the meantime, Iâll see that you are allowed visitors and suitable food that Alphonse would like to become reacquainted with.â
Alphonse focuses on the task at hand. He thinks of the timeline and of the way Edward approached his recovery from the automail installation. A determined glint ignites in his golden eyes, almost glossy with the lacquer of conviction. Alphonse is weak, but his spirit remains tireless.
âIâll do it in two,â he says.
Edward, only too happy to put the politics of Central City behind them, nods in agreement.
...
A monthâs time sees Alphonse with his hair clipped short; his once sunken cheeks have regained some fullness. Edward, Sig, and Izumi have long since been discharged, but they take turns keeping Alphonse company from the spare couch of his hospital room. Just like FĂŒhrer Grumman promised, itâs more comfortable than the standard chairs, but that doesnât mean Alphonse is content to linger.
Now more than ever, heâs determined to go home, walking unassisted down Resemboolâs roads. However, for the moment, itâs all Alphonse can do to steady his awkward gait by digging his toes into mats and bracing his arms against the parallel bars. He thinks something as simple as walking should come easily; his legs have other ideas. Another fall brings his physical therapy to an end for the day, and Alphonse returns to his hospital room.
He takes the bumps and bruises in stride. He makes it a point to smile at the staff even when their treatments bring him pain alongside progress. From the confines of a wheelchair, Alphonse greets his guardâa man called Doug who likes comic books and whistles to fill the silence. Doug never pries and is quick to look the other way when Ed overstays his official welcome.
âReady for more visitors?â Doug asks.
Alphonseâs face lights up with anticipation, and he cranes his neck to peer around the doorframe. Tawny brown hair and emerald eyes fill his field of vision as the small body of a precocious child lunges toward him. She nearly jumps into his lap before her mother pulls her back while balancing a covered plate with one arm.
âElicia! Ms. Gracia!â Alphonse greets. Recognition washes over both visitors' faces at the sound of Alphonseâs voice.
âSo thatâs what you look like,â Elicia observes. She giggles madly, rocking back and forth from heel to toe.
Alphonse is quick to change the subject; he also refuses to think about the way Eliciaâs gregarious nature reminds him of a certain someone.
The visit is pleasant and predictable. Gracia frets about his weight and serves him a double portion of adorable pudding domes that mother and daughter whipped up for the visit. The vanilla concoctions are cleverly molded into cat-shaped faces, painted with slanting eyes and curving mouths. Soft and creamy with a hint of coffee, they are as sweet as Elicia.
Between the confection and the company, Alphone passes an hour or more catching up on life and letting the child bounce between the walls of his hospital room. When mother and daughter depart (with promises to return with quiche), the silence feels harder to swallow. Alphonse cannot help but think of Winry and Pinako, of apple pie and strong coffee mixed with the smell of automail oil.
He wants, more than anything, to go home.
...
The doctors are surprised when Alphonse meets his deadline; Ed, ever faithful, is not. Alphonse leaves Central City General with his head held high and only stops to rest when the hospital is out of sight. His senses are overwhelmed by the feeling of a starched collar against the back of his neck, the pull of a new vest across his chest, and the weight of Grummanâs card in his pocket.
Alphonse follows Edâs lead through neat cobblestone roads that feel familiar and yet entirely different, steeped in a tactile reality that he can touch, feel, and taste. Thick exhaust from passing cars sticks to the back of his throat on their way to the train station. Yet, the stench is suddenly replaced by delicious aromas wafting from a nearby cafĂ©.
His rumbling stomach is drawn to a wide store window where rounds of raspberry mousse cake sit proudly on display. Chilled pink and green tinted layers sit beneath a tempting red glaze that appears sticky, smooth, and oh-so delectable. Alphonse imagines that the confection tastes tart and tangy with notes of brandy and pistachios. He wants to charge into the cafe and order every morsel thatâs for sale, but his brother has other ideas.
âBetter get going,â Ed says, throwing an arm around Alphonseâs shoulders to steer him away from temptation. âWeâve got a train to catch. Youâve been waiting a long time for what Winryâs whipping up.â
Reluctantly, Alphonse tears himself away from the sight but not before committing the name of the confection and the cafĂ© to memory. He leaves Central swearing that, when the time is right, heâll be back.
...
Their return isnât quite as Alphonse imagined. Thereâs no heroâs welcome; only a few nods of recognition are offered as they make their way down Resemboolâs country roads. But as soon as Alphonse sees the Rockbell residence, a place that marks their journeyâs end, accolades donât matter.
Edward offers to carry him, and Alphonse refuses, bracing himself against his walking stick instead. With gratitude, he thinks of the people that have propelled the brothers along their questâespecially the travelers from Xing. He hopes that they, too, made it home.
And in the blink of an eye, their dream is realized. Den pounces upon Alphonse, recognizing him despite the amount of time that has passed. Winry isnât far behind. She tackles the brothers to the ground and wraps her arms around them. The trio is a mess of blonde hair and tears of joy.
âDummies, welcome home!â she exclaims, and for now, Alphonse is inclined to believe this is where he belongs. In this home and amongst these people, he intends to reconcile the pieces of himself while his appetite for the sweet things in life returns.
Winry serves him her famed apple pie on the pink porcelain plate, its halves still bound together by golden lacquer. Itâs wonderful and not just because of the flaky crust that crumbles under his fork or the cinnamon sweetness of the soft apples. Itâs wonderful because, for the first time in a long time, Alphonse is precisely where he wants to be.
...
Many apple pies are shared around Pinakoâs dinner table. There are also birthday cakes for Alphonse (two to be exact) and pans of bread pudding served with blueberries and vanilla sauce. He eats and laughs and grows stronger by the day.
When Alphonse looks in the mirror now, he still likes what he sees, and the girls in town tend to agree. His favorite white-collar shirts hint at the toned torso hiding beneath, and his square jaw exudes newfound confidence. Yet, his ambition to make their world a better place remains the sameâtoo loud for a quiet country backdrop.
Alphonse realizes that the path he is meant to walk extends much farther. His studies, inspired by the prospect of adventure and letters from a feisty alkahestress, resonate with the Dragonâs Pulse. Finally, Alphonse is compelled to dial the number scribbled on the back of the old ivory card and is delighted when heâs connected to the nationâs most powerful man straightaway.
âHad your fill of Resembool yet, son?â FĂŒhrer Grumman asks. âAre you ready to add to that list of yours?â
âFunny you should bring up my list,â Alphonse retorts, more than willing to play Grummanâs game of allusion. âThereâs this Xingese dessert that Princess Mei Chang goes on about in her letters, a red bean soup. It would be a shame if I never tried it, donât you think?â
Grumman chuckles. âSuppose you could use some diplomatic credentials for the trip. Try not to cause an international incident until Mustang takes over.â
The golden glint in Alphonseâs eyes makes no guarantees. His well-mannered innocence is tempered by past mistakes and fused with a gunmetal resolve.
âI canât make any promises,â he replies.

(Canadian) Futures of Comics at Fumetto 2019

At Fumetto International Comic Festival 2019 in Luzern, Switzerland, I installed an exhibition / public library of Canadian comics; held four talks with reading and discussion sessions; and gave a talk at the symposium. It was part of Futures of Comics, one of ten main programmes of the festival, directed by Ilan Manouach; and curated by Manouach and Jana Jakoubek, the festival artistic director. Francesc Ruiz, Aarthi Parthasarathy, Guillaume Dumora, and Josh OâNeil also took part in the edition of Futures of Comics. The Phrontistery hosted the programme.Â

âSup!! I go by Ari, but some people also call me Alice! I'm the head moderator and graphic designer of this zine. I'm super friendly, can be a bit of a chatterbox, and somewhat of a silly dork, but I love meeting new people even if I sometimes get a little shy at first. I draw art on the side for fun as well! :â)

Hi!! Iâll be taking care of the finances! Iâm an artist and writer who has been running zines ever since the young age of 15, and I absolutely love working with people and helping out in creating awesome atmospheres and even more amazing zines~! Thank you for having me! ^_^

What Is To Come
1. We do not know what is to come. We know it doesnât look immediately good, or at all good if nothing changes â I mean! our free time is increasingly gobbled up by our all-connected devices, which harvest our thoughts and our data to strengthen the wealth and power of international companies! our wages are weak against our cost of living, with employment rights potentially being weakened further after our exit from the EU, so we do whatever we can to get whatever we can! we are encouraged to spend our leisure time side-hustling and girl-bossing because it a) gets us extra and b) reduces our time to think freely, so itâs encouraged as a positive thing by those who benefit from this! we volunteer to be sold to, constantly, relentlessly, as a hobby and a citizen, and those ever-growing companies are delighted because the more we want, the bigger their profit, and the more we want, the less weâll fight for everything they take from us in return! inequality is rising! divisions are growing! we are all, in the words of Mitchell & Webb, looking like the baddies! â but the fact is this. Something has to change.Â
It is literally not sustainable; either we go, or dramatic change must come; unfettered capitalism cannot maintain itself when soil is barren and air is unbreathable, I think; things will be bumpy, at the very least, and all we can do is hold on tight to what we believe makes humanity worth battling for. Art, and humour, and story, and discovery, and creation, and sharing, and forgiveness, and responsibility: community and togetherness, if you like, or privacy and peace, if you prefer. And of course those things have historically been used in dark ways sometimes! Of course everything has a middle path! And this isnât even a recent thing, more a tipping point weâre at right now; in Matthew Sweetâs 2001 book, Inventing the Victorians, he talks of the Victorian era as a time when âcrudely speaking, work patterns shifted from those following the rhythms established by families and communities to those timetabled by managements keen to optimise the productivity of their workforces. At the same time, traditional leisure pursuits were being undermined⊠There was a switch from locally-generated activities and community-based entertainments to increasingly officialised ones: national cricket and football leagues, public swimming baths dance clubs, museums, exhibitions, arcade games, ticket-only entertainment events.â I know, right. I know. So itâs not as if all Olden Days were a utopia â weâve made progress in so many ways, and thatâs the progress weâve got to keep fighting for, that general direction of so many things, but we have to find a new way of fighting that isnât going to end with the whole world blind.Â
And it is necessary to remind ourselves somehow, somehow, that our children donât need iPads as a human right, and maybe weâre all doing ourselves more favours if we remember that adults also need to go for walks, or make bread from scratch, or listen to something positive on the radio as a group, or discover more about our local trees or birds, or learn to sing a song together, or make a zine, because not everything has to have a goal of building a career or becoming a giant success or being acclaimed, sometimes just doing something quietly is great, and yes, I also know that some people donât have the time to do those things, the freedom, or the headspace but my god, what are we doing propping up a society where almost everyone I know logs several hours a day on their phone, minimum, but we donât have time to make eye contact and volunteer and actively be with people, rather than just tapping our screen and being âconnectedâ. What is it we truly need?Â
A v gloomy recent Salon piece which, honestly, I canât even link to here because it set off heavy panic in me, did at least end with some useful suggestions, about actively being with people, and attending marches and writing and creating, because staying online basically just makes us all melt down, and who is a better consumer than a panicking, deeply unhappy one? âAction is the answerâ, it said, because those people and organisations that like complacency and an easily controlled populace rely on our inaction.Â
So please, please, please. I want so much better for the future of humanity. Please share the actions we can take. Please put your devices away and give yourself the gift of a life unlogged. Please work together for change.Â
2. Most of this all came about because January was spent without a TV, but with plenty of books, running, radio plays and puzzles (both jigsaw and -book versions) instead. I was struck as I always am in these instances, how much better I feel when Iâm not mindlessly, automatically slumped in front of a screen, how valuable and rich my hours seem, how many more thoughts I have, how much more varied my input is, yet how much calmer my brain is. (Having said that, I did miss my usual Mad Men January watch, because it is the best television ever made, and also because the crippling January depression I usually get didnât come this year; and I do still want to give everyone access to the Watchmen TV series, which I watched at the end of last year and havenât been able to stop thinking about, and I have also been to the cinema four times since the start of the year, and also stayed up one night watching all of Adam Driverâs SNL sketches on my phone which yes, is very much a cheat, and no, I donât regret it.) I understand the gross lolling privilege of my position recommending bread and Radio 4 as the cure for all ills, but I suppose my point is that we should have the freedom to choose those things if we want them, and I believe our economy, our society, and our deliberately addictive technology undermines both the chance to make those choices, and the ability to make them.Â
3. Some podcast recommendations:Â
Two excellent episodes of Desert Island Discs: Daniel Kahneman (who said his passion for economics developed from listening to his mother gossip, and understanding the power of narrative) and Lemn Sissay (I think Iâve recommended this elsewhere, but it keeps popping into my brain and I love it)Â
This episode of Heavyweight, which generally always makes me cry, but this tale of soul mates divided â or not? â is, somehow, both devastating and utterly beautiful and warming. But really, every episode is brilliant.Â
While I disagree with lots of what he says, this episode of Seth Godinâs Akimbo is quite interesting, on the Gift Economy as an alternative to the Private Property Economy.Â
I love Jenny Slateâs description of her twenties as a âsurprise second adolescenceâ in this episode of the sadly defunct The Cut on Tuesdays. Thatâs so accurate, and itâs staggering looking back that as twenty-somethings we are just let loose in the world to work and breed and live alone and vote and everything. We donât know anything! Iâve been thinking so much about how we find the balance between fresh, new, innovative ideas to kick against defunct traditions, and ceding an ear to experience and wisdom. Old people arenât always wise, I know, and young people arenât always inventing the newness they think they are, but I see more and more the importance of experience and the dangers of binning something because it comes in a particular package. (I know I am entering middle age because Iâve started rolling my eyes at some of the drums I see teens and twenty-somethings banging. Please donât invite me to your parties, I wish I was more fun.)Â
4. Next time, I promise: recipes for sourdough starter and a sourdough loaf, and a blood orange cake that will blow your mind.Â
