Eurovision 2017: The Caucasus
These nations are relatively new to the Contest. Most have only been competing for a decade or less, but they typically come prepared with excellent songs and competent performers. All three Caucasus countries will perform in the first semi-final next week.
Azerbaijan: “Skeletons,” Dihaj
youtube
This entry has a lot of early buzz around it because the staging is apparently bonkers– a man wearing a horse mask stands on a ladder while singer Diana Hajiyeva performs around him. Interesting! “Skeletons” sounds modern and fresh, and Azerbaijan usually does quite well at the Contest. This year should be no different.
Georgia: “Keep the Faith,” Tamara Gachechiladze
youtube
Georgia often uses Eurovision as a platform to express its feelings... against Russia. I know, I know, politics are not technically allowed at Eurovision (but I bet Georgians are pretty pleased that Russia pulled out this year). Tamara, or “Tako” to her friends, is a talented singer, and "Keep The Faith” is an anthem that reflects the turmoil and unrest in the world right now.
Armenia: “Fly With Me,” Artsvik
youtube
This is a perfect example of what Armenia does so well at the Contest. "Fly With Me” is stylish and contemporary, but also sounds distinctly Armenian. Add some beautiful staging, and you’ve got a fantastic Eurovision act.

Forty three little films - Georgia

Keep the faith - Tamara Gachechiladze
Georgia
Semi final 1
Drawn 2nd
The Georgian song was not one I held highly in my list of favorites. It seemed ordinary and heard before that I wasn’t too interested. Seeing the film though, it gives a new dimension to the song. The film shows various people of different walks of life. Great praise for including people who are persecuted such as a lady in a veil, Asian lady, a lady who has suffered from domestic abuse, a person with tattoos, a gay man, a man with a beard but also a pretty girl or a simple man. All of them are and can be treated unjustly and the Georgian song has a strong message to believe in yourself and stand strong. I also like that Tamara is muted and simply attired so that these people are the highlight of the film and she is just the instrument of the song.
Powerful message presented in a powerful attractive way.
Finalist: Tough semi final; I unfortunately can’t see it.

Me while the Russia stans complain about the Georgian entry because there’s a clip in the background of a newspaper’s headline saying “Russia invades Georgia” for like a second:

And here we have the ballad that is surely set to pick up the tag ‘Bond Theme’ when review season comes around. Now, given Tako also sung with Stephanie and 3G, how often will we hear ‘We Don’t Wanna Put In’ during the two weeks in Kyiv?

SEMI-FINAL 1 - GEORGIA
This one needs a disclaimer from the start: for us, nothing better can ever come out of Georgia than last year’s Cure-Arctic Monkeys mash up ‘Midnight Gold’.
That being said, Tako’s entry for the country this year is a strange mix of really depressing and a bit uplifting, all packaged in a beautiful woman. Chosen through a public vote and the votes of an international jury, this song has a real chance of making it to the grand final...
...if they just tidy up that awfully dated cliche video package behind her. This is Eurovision, people, not an Al Gore speech circa 2004.
Our rating: 7/10
