In our weekly celebration of albums, Niall Horan writes about how he first fell in love with Damien Rice’s debut, and how it continues to inspire him today

I don’t think I’ve ever written a song the same again since spending time with O by Damien Rice. I’m obsessed with the exquisite way he recorded every minute detail. You have all these intricate scrapes of a guitar, vocal scratches and stuff, and he’s left them in there. It’s those imperfections that make the album.

YES. When Connell said that about the hometown vs college versions of him, I thought, Niall must have felt that one. I think that is a big part of Niall’s clearly deep but complicated feelings about Ireland. How does he go back and become that old Niall whose dad was the butcher at the grocery store?

RIGHT? i don’t necessarily think that dissonance is something he really struggles with on a day to day basis, thanks to his ability to compartmentalize and only focus on what’s immediately relevant mentally and emotionally, but it seems like ireland as a whole would be fraught with potential for him to be confronted with these opposing thoughts and feelings and versions of himself, and overall be very difficult for him? like how does he bridge the gap between niall: son of the local butcher, didn’t grow up super well off, not hugely popular in school, with Niall Horan: international superstar and pride of his home country. they seem so diametrically opposed, yet he could be confronted within moments of each other when he’s surrounded by the familiar faces and places that bring him back to the old days, but at the same time literally EVERYONE knows who he is and there’s got to be this sense of, like....eyes always watching, even more intently than it would be anywhere else in the world.

#I think about this a lot #also that in ireland there aren't places to hide #or fade into in the same way #as a big cosmopolitan city like london #I feel like there's so much love #for ireland in his heart #and almost longing for acceptance in his homeland #when he didn't rise in ireland #but at the same time #a feeling of scrutiny and responsibility #how do you handle returning to that?#complicated for sure #and fascinating
