Happiness is a decision, a choice. Sometimes it requires us to realign how we think about things or interact with the events in our lives, and it is always possible.
If you have decided that your happiness is dependent on things outside of yourself, you may want to rethink your position, because you have given away any control you might have over your own happiness.
How can you look at your life differently, so that you can be happy? Well, for one, stop taking the actions of others personally. It is extremely rare that anyone does anything with any thought of how it will affect anyone else (that doesn’t mean that you should, I’m just pointing it out). If you take something someone else does personally, you’ve probably made up a story about their actions that has little bearing on reality.
The next time you find yourself taking the actions of another personally, examine your assumptions. What have you assumed about their motives? How likely is that to be true? What have you assumed about what they were thinking? How likely is that to be true? How would an outsider view what just happened? If your roles were reversed, what would have happened (really, not in some idealized version of yourself)?
Now, let it all go and expend your energy on something more useful than taking it personally.

This scene I’m writing for my Clexa fic is intense. Lexa is super-pissed and worried and exhausted after her street battles in Polis and swear, I just need a beer and some chocolate and then I’m gonna go lie down and rest because it wore my ass out.

Wanna know what sucks?
Wanna know what sucks? When you invite someone out to go get food and they tell you no, they don't want to spend the money. Then you hear they went out two days later with other people to the exact diner you invited them to two days prior....

Sometimes life can be overwhelming. Not even necessarily the events of life, but merely the amount of input that one receives.
It is in that moment of overwhelm that one is presented with a choice, a clear and simple choice. Do I allow myself to be overwhelmed by the data I am receiving, and become a victim, or do I allow humor to enter in and loosen things up?
This is not a recommendation to make a joke out of serious matters. It is a recommendation to allow yourself to see the humor, the ludicrousness, if you will, of the situation. Become aware of the cosmic joke.
Ask yourself this – where do I see the sense of humor of the Universe in my life today? Where can I choose to take the actions and events that surround me as parts of an ongoing comic strip in someone else’s paper?
Life doesn’t have to be so serious all the time, you know.

We live in a world full of individuals, each unique and beautiful in their own way. It is a statistical impossibility that everyone is going to agree on a given subject, whether it is the appropriate color for a living room, the toppings on a pizza, or how to achieve world peace.
Sometimes, some people make the mistake of taking a difference in opinion personally. How often does your opinion on a given subject have anything to do with your neighbor three doors down (unless, of course, the subject matter is your neighbor three doors down)? Then why on earth should anyone else’s opinion about politics (or fried food or the price of tea in India) actually be about you?
Countless arguments could have been avoided by remembering that, just because someone doesn’t share your opinion, it doesn’t mean they don’t like you, or even have an opinion about you.
Even if that opinion has to do with how you are doing something. Sometimes people have valid reasons to have an opinion about your methodology. For instance, they are your boss or your spouse, or the action in question directly impacts them in some way. At the very least, you might consider listening to their concerns and their input. Remembering that, regardless of how the opinion is phrased, it has nothing to do with you personally, will help you hear them better. It will also help you in discussing options and methodology in a calm, rational manner.
By staying calm, you open the door to hearing what their concerns are. Maybe they aren’t even directly concerned about your methodology. Maybe they are in fear. Maybe they were startled by something unfamiliar. Maybe they just want to understand where you are coming from. The less you take any of it personally, the easier the conversation will find a resolution.
