Kimura Takuya as Nobunaga and Beat Takeshi as Hideyoshi in a Toyota ReBorn TV ad. 

Back when I posted about Kimura Takuya going to star as Nobunaga again (in the then-unnamed Legend and Butterfly), I jokingly said he’d done it 20 times already, referencing a series of 20 interlinked “episodes” of commercials he did for Toyota.

If you’ve not seen my previous post about it: The commercial series is about Nobunaga and Hideyoshi, who are “reborn” in the modern world, driving various Toyota models around Japan as they meet other “reborn” samurai in their travels. The were also a couple “episodes” that guest-starred Hugh Jackman, who at the time was in Japan to film Wolverine.

Why Nobunaga and Hideyoshi? Not simply because they’re the “great unifiers”, but also because the founder’s name Toyoda is composed of the same Toyo as in Toyotomi, and the -da of Oda. Of course the -da part can also be Sanada or Takeda, but it makes more sense to match Hideyoshi with Nobunaga than with Shingen or Yukimura narrative-wise.
