Itâs aâŠ!
The story is based on a private RP and written together with @ruki-mukami-dl and @nalia-tsukino (thank you for portraying doctor Kageyama Takeo).
The gel on Yurikoâs lower belly was as cold as ever, making her shiver slightly. Or perhaps, there was another reason for her quivering after all. What if something was wrong? She had been feeling okay, but there was always a chance that everything wouldnât go well⊠and with such a special baby. There werenât many Vampire-Kitsune hybrids, werenât there?
Holding Rukiâs hand, Yuriko didnât voice out her worries. They had talked about this before, with the doctor, Kageyama Takeo, too. The man would have told them if there was a problem. So, Yuriko inhaled, focusing her gaze on the screen with the black and white view.
Such tiny feet and hands. Last time, the baby had looked more like a scrimp, but now, the human form was clear. Not a fox but a human.
Thump thump. Thump thump. Thump thump.
The steady sound of the bouncing heart. Ruki was able to hear it if he pressed his ear on Yurikoâs belly, but she could only listen to this song of life here.
Thump thump. Thump thump. Thump thump.
âEverything is well with the baby. The size is perfect, too.â The doctor's voice sailed into Yurikoâs ears, but she didnât move her gaze from the screen. âWould you like to know the gender?â
Slowly, Ruki turned his head. The storm of his eyes glued to Yuriko as he squeezed her hand a bit too roughly. Yuriko didnât mention it, for her heart had just become jumpy. The blue-gray depth moved back to the monitor. âIâd like to know.â
âUmh⊠me too.â Yurikoâs words wavered in her own ears as well, but she confirmed them with a nod. Of course, it didnât matter if the baby was a boy or a girl. Still, she couldnât help but be curious.
Ruki was already staring at the screen, leaning in a bit with a frown between his brows as if he had sunk deep into his thoughts.
âSince you both agreeâŠâ The doctor cleared his throat. âAs you can see hereâŠâ
Yuriko lifted her glasses a bit but didnât dare to move otherwise. Even with the doctor explaining everything, she couldnât see any indicator of either boy or girl. She could only take his word for it, but of course, she trusted this man.
âSo, in spring, you will be welcoming home a baby girl.â
A baby girl.
Yurikoâs heart hopped, and she couldnât prevent her lips from curling as she searched for Rukiâs gaze. He looked calm and collected as if the information did not affect him.
Thump thump. Thump thump. Thump thump.
For a moment, there was nothing else. The heart kept singing. And then⊠a grin. Wider than Yuriko had ever seen on Rukiâs face. His gaze had turned inwards, yet his beaming radiated through the room, lighting it bright.
Ruki blinked, his smile settling down a little. "Now, we know. That's good. Then we can buy things for a girl." He laced his fingers with Yurikoâs, clenching her hand gentler this time. "The gender doesn't matter. But it's useful to know."
Yuriko tilted her head. âYeah⊠the gender doesnât matter.
But a girl. That was something. Yuriko decided then and there that she would not be like her mother. She would make sure that this girl would have attention and love as much as she would be able to give her.
The library bedroom was quiet. Yuriko stretched her arms and yawned, the familiar drowsiness sneaking into her muscles and mind.
âDid you put the photo in your purse?â Ruki adjusted his new, blue blazer Yuriko had gotten for him just a few days ago.
âMhm⊠Itâs right there⊠You can take it out.â She pulled off her cardigan. A nap would be perfect at the moment, but she could have a snack, too. Perhaps a bit of sleeping first and then eating⊠hmmâŠ
âLook at her. She is perfect.â
Turning around, Yuriko blinked. There it was again: the grin. She inched closer, leaning in as Ruki held the ultrasound picture. A smile broke out of Yuriko. âYes, our beautiful little girl.â
âWe should frame this and put it in her room.â Ruki brushed Yurikoâs cheek.
Yuriko nodded. âOr inâŠâ A yawn vibrated out of her. â...oursâŠâ
Ruki put the photo on the table and glanced at Yuriko. âSleepy again?â
The Kitsune was about to nod, but another yawn forced her mouth open. Hastily, she lifted her hand, covering her lips.
âOff to bed then.â
Before Yuriko had time to resist, Ruki had already collected her in his arms and carried her into their bed. He nested her in the middle of the large, angular pillow he had given her at Christmas and scooted closer, massaging her belly through the fabric of her dress.
âClose your eyes.â Just a whisper, but it didnât even occur to Yuriko to object. Her lids slumped down while she shifted her neck to find perfect support from the pillow. âThatâs my good girl~â Rukiâs words traveled into her mind, painting her face with heat.
As Yuriko was sinking into soft sluggishness, she felt how Ruki lay his cheek against her belly while his hand caressed the side of it. âAnd here is my other one. Such a good girl.â
âNhh?â Yuriko opened her mouth but closed it right away.
âShh, just sleep.â A mere whisper again. âThatâs right. We let your mama sleep for now. You drained all her energy today, didnât you?â
As tired as she was, Yuriko still reached her hand, entangling her fingers with Rukiâs hair. This time, she didnât even try to speak, nor did she peek but simply stayed put and relaxed.
âOur little girl⊠You will be protected. Iâll make sure of it.â Rukiâs voice was a low murmur. âI will recite you any book you want to hear and teach you to read too. I did that with my brothers and Iâm sure you will learn fast when the time is right. We can do puzzles together, visit any place you wish, and Iâll show you how to ride. You can even have your own horseâŠâ
Yuriko drifted, the sound of Rukiâs voice turning more and more distant. But she couldnât quite let go, for somehow the situation was way too adorable.
âYouâll be my little girl forever, my very own baby girlâŠâ Ruki placed a kiss on Yurikoâs belly. âYou and your mama will always be my precious treasures. I promise to protect and cherish you eternally.â
He is so happy⊠Perhaps⊠he wished⊠for a girl⊠Yurikoâs head slid to the side, and her cheek hit the pillow. It could be that Ruki said something more, but that was between him and the baby, for Yuriko heard his voice no more.
I made the pic for the fic with a CG (Rukiâs LE route), fake ultrasound picture, and edited a photo as a background.

My Different Fandom OCs
...and their species
First of all, I want to mention that I only roleplay active in the Diabolik Lovers fandom. Besides my OCs I also portray canon characters. I mostly RP privately, prefered on Discord.
Tagged by: @yuriko-tsukino-rp
Tagging: @seaoflove07 @psychoxis @wintermoonwritings
Pictures: Picrew
My Diabolik Lovers OCs
...and their species
Tsukino Nalia (née Wagner)
Species: Kitsune, Zenko (Former Human)
Nalia is my main RP character. She is married with Tsukino Yuuto (@yuuto-tsukino). Furthermore, she is Tsukino Yuriko's friend (@yuriko-tsukino-rp). Yuuto and Yuriko are my friend's OCs. I RP with Nalia the most and her story is the most extensive one. You can see part of her story here on her Tumblr blog.
Homura Shinji
Species: Kitsune, Yako
Shinji is a Yako from the Demon World. His life there was hard. Many terrible things happened and now he lives in the Human World. He is Tsukino Yuuto's friend. The two know each other since childhood. Also, he is shipped with Kitsui Himiko who is my friend's OC.
Kageyama Takeo
Species: Kitsune, Zenko
Takeo is a doctor and has a private clinic in the Human World. There he treats kitsune and humans. Helping others makes him happy, so his job always comes first. That is why he is currently single, but this fact does not bother him.
Kageyama Haruto
Species: Kitsune, Zenko
Haruto is Takeo's identical twin brother and works as a private detective. He is interested in kitsune history and dark stuff. So it comes that he knows a lot about demonic creatures.
Mukami Ikuto
Species: Vampire (Former Human)
Ikuto is the fifth Mukami brother and was turned just like the others by Karlheinz. However, he is a rebel and does not have a good relationship with his brothers, hating Mukami Ruki the most. He is shipped with Ramos Maria (@mermaid--bride) who is my friend's OC.
Minor Diabolik Lovers OCs
Hoshino Yamato â Kitsune/Yako, Homura Shinji's biological father
Homura Natsumi â Kitsune/Yako, Homura Shinji's mother
Homura Shinjiro â Kitsune/Yako, Homura Shinji's stepfather
Homura Tamaki (deceased) â Kitsune/Yako, Homura Shinji's sister
Saldinger Roman â Hunter/Human, Mukami Ruki's relative
Mukami Yuki (nĂ©e Chikara) â Vampire/Former human, Mukami Ruki's wife
Shiroyama Hime â Hunter/Human, Sakamaki Subaru's girlfriend

Cruore + Takeo? Oooor aspectabun + Mob? đđ
Aspectabund -Â letting emotion show easily through the face or eyesÂ
With Mob from the perspective of Ritsu (for Risu:)
Ritsu has heard his nii-san referred to as many things before: boring, expressionless, freakish, emotionless.
It used to make him unbelievably upset to hear people say such things about Shigeo, to talk about a person they didnât even try seeing past the surface of. It took a lot of self control to keep from acting violently on that anger in order to defend his beloved nii-san, but Ritsu doesnât get as mad listening to the rude things people have to say about Shigeo now. Both because he knows theyâre wrong and they wonât be bad mouthing his nii-san after a friendly float over the edge of the school roof.
Thereâs nothing inherently violent about that, not even with the unsaid threat of letting them drop hang alongside them lest they say anything cruel about his nii-san again.
While Shigeo may be perceived as boring, is often expressionless and may have at one point been thought freakish by Ritsu himself (only in a weak moment of spiteful jealousy), he is anything but emotionless. It just takes a trained eye to see past his detached feelings, his default apathetic face.
And Ritsu is well versed in the art of Shigeoâs limited emotions, partly because he has a big tell.
When Ritsu walks through the front door of his home straight from the student body meeting, the house is abnormally quiet. He arrived an hour later than usual thanks to Kamuro-sanâs particularly combative mood, but thereâs usually some kind of activity sparking sounds of life within the house at this time. He pauses for a moment before checking the getabako, closes the door behind him once he identifies the lone pair of sneakers as Shigeoâs.
That explains it. Ritsu almost forgot that itâs Friday evening, which means their parents have already left for their weekly date night. Shouldnât Shigeo be out with that dumbass Reigen though?
Ritsu kicks off his shoes and places them next to Shigeoâs, starts to pad softly into the kitchen for a glass of water. Stuck to the fridge is a note saying dinner is in the oven for when they get hungry, also a list of chores for himself and Shigeo to complete before their parents get home. Ritsu floats a glass over to the sink as he reads the list, turns on the faucet with a twitch of his finger.
Theyâre all fairly easy tasks.
Their parents shouldnât be back until after sunset, so that gives Ritsu plenty of time to grab a snack, finish his homework, and then get started on the chores with Shigeo. Ritsu mulls over this as he turns off the faucet and grabs the cup out of mid air, taking a sip as he turns and starts to head up the stairs. A quick peek into the empty living room before he ascends indicates that Shigeo is up in his room, most likely working on homework himself. His nii-san is so responsible.
Shigeoâs room is the first door on the left, neighbored with Ritsuâs own but parallel to the upstairs bathroom. Ritsu shifts his school bag on his shoulder before knocking, slightly discouraged when after a moment he doesnât hear a call to enter. He does regardless.
Shigeo is sitting quietly at his desk, hands flat against the surface, staring blankly at a piece of paper between his spread hands. Heâs changed out of his school uniform into sweats and a plain white t-shirt, but doesnât look comfortable by any means. His shoulders arenât quite tense, but something about Shigeoâs posture seemsâŠstiff. He almost looks like a statue.
âNii-san?â He calls, but Shigeo doesnât outwardly react aside from turning his head just slightly towards Ritsuâs voice. He takes a step inside of Shigeoâs room and feels with the tendrils of his psychic aura, an almost natural extension of himself now, a prickling sensation, like pressing his hand just barely against the quills of a cactus: thereâs pressure, faint, acting almost like a warning. It sparks immediate hesitation within Ritsuâs gut.
âHello Ritsu.â Shigeoâs voice sounds like it always does, flat and quiet with just enough inflection to come off as polite. Disinterested, but polite. Ritsu takes another step closer and Shigeo turns towards him fully. He has that blank expression of neutrality on his face and were it anyone else, they wouldnât see anything wrong.
But Shigeoâs eyes have always given him away.
For as long as Ritsu can remember, his nii-san has always felt in extremes, both good and bad. It wasnât up until a certain point with his psychic powers that it became clear, whether feeling good or bad, the outcome is often the same: a telekinetic explosion, a cathartic release of pent up aggressions and intentions and feelings. Just like that time with the bullies when they were younger.
Those are all things that Shigeo now keeps more carefully under lock and key, all things Shigeo exercises great control in suppressing.
Shigeoâs eyes, however, have never held the same restraint.
Ritsu notices, right off the bat, the gloss that covers his nii-sanâs eyes, the far away look, the million mile stare that sees right through him. Itâs a look heâs seen plenty of times, right before an explosion.
Controlling emotions requires a constant awareness of mind and body in order to shut them down before they can fully surface, something Ritsu has a bit of experience with himself. Itâs an easy enough feat for him because heâs generally limited to feeling disdain and annoyance. But for Shigeo, whose emotions are borderline explosive, elevated and heightened beyond the normal spectrum of human feeling, it requires much more focus.
He canât seem to equally balance his autonomic and social awareness and is often thought to be in his own world because of it, so focused on the mechanisms of building and holding walls within his own mind that heâs not fully present. It doesnât make Shigeo any of the things people like to call him, it just distracts him from the subtle nuances of everyday life unfolding around him. It makes him oblivious to the atmosphere because his awareness is largely turned inwards.
And that blank look in Shigeoâs eyes means heâs aware of an inner emotion that is trying very hard to surface.
âNii-san, is everything okay?â Ritsu tries to keep his voice level, to act casual with his question. He doesnât want to bother Shigeo unnecessarily, but maybe he can be talked down from this volatile place he seems to be on the edge of.
Shigeo blinks at him, an empty gesture, and turns away to face his desk again. Ritsuâs attention too is drawn to the desk, or namely the slip of paper that lies on it, where he sees what looks like a wanted poster searching for one roughly characterized  âPsycho Helmetâ. Ritsu doesnât understand how or why that is relevant to his nii-sanâs current emotional state, but if the way Shigeoâs blank gaze seems fixated on it, it must be somehow.
âAh, everything is fine Ritsu.â Shigeo doesnât offer any more explanation, sounds nonplussed by both the question and his own answer. But Ritsu, not normally being one to pry, just canât leave it at that.
âAre you sure? Is there anything youâd like toâŠtalk about?â The words donât leave Ritsuâs mouth easily, come out stilted and awkward. He normally doesnât do this type of thing with Shigeo and clears his throat immediately afterwards, trying to distract from the stiffness of his tone. Shigeo doesnât seem to notice or really even hear his words.
âNo.â Is simply what he says in response and Ritsu deflates a bit. He could try again to prompt a conversation, ask Shigeo if he saw the note mom and dad left, inquire about why heâs not at Spirits and Such Consultation or with the Body Improvement Club. But RitsuâŠdoesnât want to be shut down again. Doesnât want to be shut out.
Ritsu can clearly see something is bothering Shigeo but as much as he tries, if Shigeo doesnât want to talk, he wonât talk. Itâs not stubbornness so much as it is Shigeo-ness, the characteristic detached and reserved nature of his nii-san that Ritsu has both envied and admired. Itâs nearly impenetrable, save for the transparency of his eyes, so Ritsu sighs in resignation and nods his head, turns to leave Shigeoâs room and let his brother have his silence. Even though some part of him wishes to stay and offer comfort, or maybe just a simple distraction.
âAlright, nii-san. Let me know when you get hungry, I can prepare dinner.â Shigeo makes a noise of affirmation, a quiet hum in the back of his throat, and thatâs it.
Ritsu softly closes the door behind him and moves down the hall to his bedroom. He enters, sets his cup of water down on his desk and stands idly in the middle of his room for a moment. Thereâs still a remnant of psychic pressure leaking from Shigeoâs vicinity, running along his skin like static. Ritsu tries to push it out of his mind, to stop feeling it pricking along his skin but he just canât shake the knowledge that something is bothering his nii-san and therefore, bothering him.
Ritsu drops his school bag unceremoniously on his folded futon and starts to strip out of his school uniform, changes into lounge wear stiffly all the while trying to shake off that distinct sensation curling persistently around his awareness: itâs almost like itâs asking for his attention, for his helpâŠ
Ritsu ignores it, or tries to, because if Shigeo needed to talk he would talk. If Shigeo needed help, he would ask. So Ritsu tries to ignore it, in favor of digging out his pile of schoolwork for the weekend, tries to ignore it while distractedly reading calculus equations again and again, tries to ignore it as the numbers bounce around uselessly inside of his skull, tries to ignore itâŠfor all of five more minutes before he makes a spontaneous decision and gets up, grabs his DS and a game cartridge and make his way downstairs.
Homework be damned, who is he kidding? Ritsu knows his nii-san better than that. The look in his eyes said more than Shigeo needed to and quite frankly, ever freely would. It may not be his job to help, but it is his obligation as younger brother to at least try.
And Ritsu has a pretty good idea of where to start.
Once he gets to the kitchen, he roots through the pantry looking for the second batch of Matcha cookies their mom made a day ago. A family favorite. Ritsu uses his powers to grab two glasses and the carton of milk from the fridge at the same time. He doesnât even bother filling them, just grabs the tupperware container of checkerboard cookies once he finds them and marches back up stairs, two cups and a milk carton trailing idly behind him. Purposeful intent sets his shoulders straight.
Ritsu doesnât bother knocking this time, just opens the door and enters, isnât surprised to find Shigeo sitting in the exact same position as before. Shigeo, however, seems surprised to see him. He actually turns when Ritsu enters, follows him with his empty eyes as he moves across the room and settles himself down on Shigeoâs futon, completely and wholly uninvited. He makes himself comfortable in the corner so thereâs enough room for Shigeo to join him and watch him play mindless video games like his nii-san has always enjoyed. Like he used to do when they were younger.
âRitsu?â Shigeoâs tone is still neutral, still devoid of any real emotion, but itâs something. He has his nii-sanâs attention.
Ritsu doesnât say anything in reply, doesnât really know what to say or how to explain his sudden intrusion, so he just pats the space next to him and starts up his DS. The cups and milk carton are still floating by his head but he sets the Matcha cookies down by his knee, within easy reach of Shigeo were he to join him.
Ritsu hopes that he will.
And he does, not even a minute later.
Without another word, Shigeo settles gingerly on his futon next to Ritsu. Shoulder to shoulder, they sit quietly together and immerse themselves in the serene world of Animal Crossing, the only sound that fills the silence that of the games soundtrack. As Ritsu aimlessly wanders around talking to villagers and shaking trees Shigeo reaches up to pour himself a glass of milk, his favorite drink. A treat that he can never deny. He mutely offers Ritsu a cup, which he shakes his head no to, but he accepts the offered cookie instead.
Ritsu and Shigeo sit and play Animal Crossing and eat cookies and milk for the majority of the evening. Gradually, the residual psychic pressure from Shigeoâs unidentified emotion weakens and with a glance his direction, Ritsu sees his nii-sanâs eyes grow a little less empty. Feels his posture become a little lessâŠstiff. Feels an inexplicable, intangible sense of calmness and contentedness grow between them.
Their parents get home hours later and find them much in the same position they started out in, shoulder to shoulder on Shigeoâs futon with the DS held between them, but the carton of milk is empty and so is the tupperware of cookies. They get scolded for spoiling their dinner and neglecting their chores, but Ritsu and Shigeo take it in stride. Manage a small laugh behind their parents backs when they leave to go, presumably, get started on the chores themselves.
Ritsu suggests they go help after another minute of chasing butterflies and Shigeo nods easily in agreement. His tone has remained mostly bored, his face mostly expressionless, his knack for pointing out trees that have Perfect Fruit mostly freakish, but his eyes have become far from emotionless. Ritsu detects a hint of a smile in them, just a small spark of light as they descend the stairs to help their parents take out the recycling and trash. It really is a suitable look for his nii-san.
Ritsuâs just happy that he can see it.

Have you heard the legend?
The legend of the Crow that Ate the Sun. Surely youâve heard the rumours.
They say he is the unnatural bend and weight of the shadows; they say heâs a daemon that can read the hearts of men.
They say heâll make you dance to his tune.
»»------------- ------------- ------------- € ------------- ------------- -------------««
The first time you hold a sword, albeit a wooden one, a boy with the sunset in his hair claps his hands.
"Wahh," he crosses the distance between you in an instant, leaning around Tobio to peer at your grip on the sword, "that was a really nice swing!"
"It⊠was?" You glance at Tobio, who's eyeing the newcomer skeptically, a tick in his brow at being interrupted mid-explanation.
"Yeah," he nods enthusiastically, "but you gotta -" the boy pauses, brows scrunching as he scrambles for a way to explain. You watch, amused, as he cocks his head and gestures with his hands in thought. He's like a baby bird.
"- You gotta grip it like this," he puts his hands on yours, moving your thumb so that it rests on the inside of the hilt, âif your thumbâs on top, itâll be hard for you to apply much strength.âÂ
You glance up at him as he fusses with your grip. His eyes are bright; the sunlight snags in his lashes and drips into his eyes - turning brown to amber.Â
His brand of beauty is different from that of your brotherâs, and you canât look away.Â
âHey,â Tobio says suddenly, taking a step forward and shoving the boyâs hands away roughly - ah, heâs reached his limit -Â âwho do you think youâre touching, dumbass?â
The boy laughs. You smack Tobio upside the head with your free hand.Â
âSorry,â you apologize, âTobioâs pretty strict about the rules.â
He stops laughing to eye you amusedly. âThis is a nice change,â he says, which explains absolutely nothing, âusually, people are bowing at my feet.â
This time, itâs your turn to frown. A noble, you muse, but no, even nobles wouldn't be so flippant before royalty. Besides, pursing your lips, you eye his clothes - a simple white tunic that was likely made of linen, and a ratty pair of riding britches, the green fabric muddied - no noble would be caught looking like that.Â
Youâre about to ask him his name when the boy startles with a loud, âAh!âÂ
He turns to smile at you, âSorry, I canât stay.â
Behind him, the sun glows with a sudden, violent brightness, and you canât help but squeeze your eyes shut.
When you open them again, the boy is gone.
»»------------- ------------- ------------- € ------------- ------------- -------------««
Bring your blade up. Pivot - careful, now, keep your balance. Donât take the blow head-on; glance it off - let your momentum carry you forward, let it guide your swing - there.
At your next step, you plant your feet on the ground firmly, turning your body to the side. When your opponentâs sword comes arcing down, you tilt yours ever so slightly, one hand on the hilt and the other on the flat of the blade, glancing the blow off.
Metal against metal; the clang of your swords reverberates throughout the empty training ground, as does the clatter of Tobioâs broadsword when it falls from his hand.
The sound echoes in the silence that follows.Â
You cluck your tongue. âYour form was sloppy for the whole of the second half,â you tell him, âwhatâs on your mind?â The night makes it hard to tell exactly what Tobioâs thinking, but you know without doubt that his eyebrows are pulled into a frown.Â
âNothing,â your brother says. Then, âCongratulations on your win, sister.â You can hear the warmth in his words, and it makes pride swell within you. Kageyama Tobio, the young prince known for his unparalleled precision in swordsmanship - and heâs complimenting you. Baby brother or not, youâll take what you can get.Â
You pat him on the back as he moves to pick up his sword, âOnly because youâre having an off day,â you tell him, âwhatâs troubling you?â
When he doesnât reply, you chance a guess. âIs it the war?â
His silence tells you all you need to know. Itâs a foolish question, really; everything has been about the war, since it started fifteen years ago.
âI received a raven, today. Father wants me to join him on the front lines,â he says finally, dropping to sit on the dusty ground of the training arena.Â
His words knock the breath out of your lungs.Â
(Your brother isnât upset because he is afraid. You know him perhaps better than you know yourself - Tobio is talented, and has put in countless hours to shape that talent into skill. He has less to fear on the front lines than most of the kingdomâs soldiers.Â
Youâre not afraid because he is unskilled. Youâre afraid because you know your brother is kind.)
âYou were born into this war,â you take his hand in your own as you settle on the ground next to him, âI wish you didnât have to grow up in it.â I wish you wouldnât die in it. His palms are calloused - they speak of hours spent swinging a sword too heavy for him, of sweating under the sun alongside the kingdomâs best soldiers - they are nothing like your own.Â
Your palms are smooth, every long-forgotten callous met with admonition, soothed with a basin of warm water.Â
(Princesses donât swing swords, they embroider. Your father eyes your hands with disdain, gripped tightly around a wooden hilt. Next to you, Tobioâs shoulders are pulled tight to his ears; moonlight pools in the crook of his neck.Â
Girls donât pour over ancient scrolls, they learn to waltz. Sugawara smiles sympathetically from the doorway as you plead with your eyes. Your dance instructor tuts and strikes your arm with a cane to correct your posture.Â
Again - raise your arm, twirl.)
âItâll be alright,â you smile, releasing Tobioâs hands to squish his cheeks between yours instead. âThe war has gone on long enough - surely they are as tired of it as we are.â
âFather isnât tired of it.âÂ
You smile sadly. âWell,â you say lightly, âIâm certainly tired enough of it for him.âÂ
Tobio frowns, opening his mouth to argue - but you pull him into a hug instead.
(Iâm sorry that I know no other way to comfort you but with lies. Iâm sorry I canât carry the crown for you. Iâm sorry my arms are too weak to hold a broadsword - all I know is to glance blows off my rapier.)
âCome on,â you pull away slightly to say, âwe should get back, before Iwaizumi catches us here.â
You make to stand, but Tobio tugs you back down. âIâm tired of it too,â he doesnât meet your eyes, âif I were King, thereâd be peace talks.â You disarmed me, he tells you with his hands, squeezing yours once before letting go, that counts for something.Â
Your heart twinges - they grow up so fast.Â
When you smile, you hope that it reaches your eyes. âYouâll be King someday, Tobio. Remember that, then.â
(You wish you were still eight, and Tobio still four - it had been so much simpler, back then, when heâd let you declare that youâd protect him from the world in the middle of the palace gardens past both of your bedtimes, no matter that you were Crown Princess only in name.)

You wake, groaning, to the curtains being flung open. Hitoka, your handmaiden, gestures frantically as she flutters about your drawers and closets.
âHis Majesty has returned,â Hitoka says, a note of hysteria in her voice as she hovers uncertainly, two pairs of earrings in either hand, âand heâs sent for you, Kageyama-sama. Iâm not sure what for - the messenger only said that it was urgent.â
You frown. Last youâd heard, your father isnât due for a return from the front lines for another fortnight. Though, you think bitterly, itâs not like youâre ever privy to his plans.Â
Hitoka helps you into your robe - white silk with gold trimmings lined with the finest of diamonds, cinched on either shoulder with gold hoops. She throws a feathered cloak over your shoulders, hooking your motherâs necklace around your neck, where it gleams in the morning sun. As you lean forward to peer at your reflection, fingers fumbling with the bulky earrings sheâd handed you, Hitoka smiles at you in the mirror.
âIâm sure itâs nothing too bad, mâlady,â she reassures, âperhaps heâs only curious about how the people have been.â
The earrings weigh heavy on your ears - a hideous monstrosity of pearls and diamonds. âFather is only ever concerned about the people when the militaryâs running on fumes,â you reply.Â
Hitoka doesnât respond, shifting uneasily. You force yourself to shake off the bitterness - itâs not her fault, after all.Â
âCome,â you cast a last glance at your reflection - in a robe made of the finest silks and jewels money can buy, and the ornate jewelry and cloak to indicate your status, you look like you could be a queen.Â
(That door closed for you fifteen years ago, the day Tobio was born.)
As you sweep out of the doors of your chambers, Hitoka a half step behind you, your earrings sway with every step - they pull on your ears, a heavy reminder.Â
»»------------- ------------- ------------- € ------------- ------------- -------------««
The doors leading to your fatherâs court are adorned with gilded gold. Leaves entwine with the stems of blooms unfurling around great dark rubies, a thousand eyes that bore into you as the guards bow.
As one, the guards slam the butt of their lances on the ground. The doors open, and you tilt your chin a fraction higher.Â
âPresenting to His Majesty, King of Sol, Kageyama Takeo: Her Royal Highness, the Crown Princess of Sol, Kageyama y/n, and her esteemed handmaiden,â one of the guards announces, voice booming across the vast space.Â
Tobio is already there, on a knee. Heâs dressed all in black the way the men in your family always are, a tiny dark point almost swallowed by the mass of light that is the court chamber.Â
Where the doors to the court had boasted of opulence, the interior is an assault of colour and light. The entire room is framed with stained-glass windows that stretch to the edges of the high ceiling - high enough that the common rabble canât see in, but low enough to allow light in - shining rainbow tessellations over the entirety of the room. The floor is a smooth, white marble, interrupted only by great white columns that bear the gold engravings of feathers sprouting from the gold leaves that adorn its tops and bottoms. Â
At the very center of the chamber, at the end of the red carpet, your father sits atop a throne that dwarves your own, the gold of it so encrusted with rubies he may well be atop a throne of blood. A wreath of ebony feathers trail up the steps to encircle the foot of his throne. Above, the arched ceiling boasts a gaping hole above your fatherâs throne, bathing him in light. Beneath his throne, his four advisors and councilors sit in ornate thrones of their own.Â
Vultures gazing upon a limping lamb, their eyes follow you as you stride across the red carpet in measured steps, feathered cloak billowing in your wake. At your back, Hitoka trembles at the attention.
âYour Majesty,â you curtsy, bowing your head. Out of the corner of your eye, you see Hitoka prostrate herself on the floor.Â
âY/n, my daughter,â your father rumbles, âa delight to see you again.â
You take your place next to Tobio, lifting your skirts just barely before settling upon the cushion - a picture of elegance, the way youâve been taught. Behind you, Hitoka kneels next to Tadashi, Tobioâs manservant, their heads bowed.Â
It is only then that you realize - besides Hitoka and Tadashi, there are no servants in the room.Â
Despite the way the room is swathed in warmth, a chill runs up your spine.Â
âFather,â next to you, Tobio shifts uncomfortably, âyouâve returned early.â
âYes,â your father answers after a momentâs pause, âit was necessary.â
Before your wide eyes, your father, King of the vastest and wealthiest kingdom, fists his left hand in the fabric of his cloak and yanks it off in a single movement.
The cloak falls. A hideous hide, it settles on the ground with a heavy thump that echoes in the vastness of the chamber. The crow-headed pin that had fastened it to his shoulder rolls to a stop at your feet, a single ruby eye glaring up at you.Â
Where your fatherâs right arm once was, all that remains is a stump that stops just below his elbow.Â
But what draws your eyes isnât the nauseating red soaking the bandages, or the pained wince you can now see on your fatherâs face. No - itâs the fat, black veins that wind up whatâs left of his arm from beneath the bandages, disappearing beneath the fabric of his robe at the shoulder.Â
Your fatherâs advisors avert their eyes; in a sign of respect or disgust, youâre unsure. You hear twin intakes of breath and muffled gasps from behind you, and distractedly, you hope that Hitoka is alright.
Your brother is the first to find his voice, tearing his eyes away from the gruesome sight. âWho gave you that wound?â
âNot who, Tobio, but what.â His words are followed by a wince, and for all that it makes your skin crawl, you canât look away from the way the veins throb and writhe beneath your fatherâs skin, angry worms feasting on a carcass. As you watch, they seem to crawl ever higher up your fatherâs arm - until you see a hint of them peeking out from under your fatherâs collar.
Your blood runs cold, but your mind is clear. âFather, what do you mean by that?â You remember, too late, that princesses only speak when spoken to.
For once, he answers you. âOur enemies - Arbor - theyâve procured the help of a Forest God. They called him Ushiwaka - he tore through our ranks in the blink of an eye.â Even in pain, your fatherâs face contorts in fury, pounding his remaining fist on the armrests of his throne. âIt was a massacre.â
âGods donât exist,â Tobio says quietly, and when you turn to look at him, his grip on the hilt of his sword is white-knuckled.Â
(Unbidden, the memory of amber eyes and a laugh that fades in the sunâs rays rises from the depths of your mind.)
âWith all due respect, Your Highnesses, they do,â Takayuki, your fatherâs closest advisor, finally speaks up, âevidently.âÂ
Tobio growls in the back of his throat, and instinctively, you throw out a hand to rest gently on his arm.Â
Takayuki smiles, beady eyes crinkling in the corners. âOf course, Sol will not go down without a fight.â
âI will die tonight,â your father says from his throne, âthat is what my body tells me.â Tobio rises, fur coat dragging behind him as he takes a half-step forward, mouth open as if to argue. At the hand your father holds up, he begrudgingly backs down.
âTobio,â your fatherâs tone could almost be called fond, âmy son. You must take my place as king.âÂ
(You knew it was coming. Youâve seen it coming since you were sixteen, when your father laid a hand on a shoulder that wasnât yours and said, this is my son, heâs going to be King.
It doesnât sting any less.)
Tobioâs eyes on you hurt like the edge of broadswords you have never swung.Â
(Heâs your brother.Â
Itâs not his fault.Â
Itâs not his fault.)
You smile - itâs a weak thing, but you hope he takes it as gentle, as frail, because your father is dying. âYouâll be a great King, Tobio.â
âThere is no shortage of gods,â Takayuki tells your brother, âif there is one, surely there is another.â
Your fatherâs eyes glitter, two dark pools in a hall of light. âSol has never lost a war, and we never will. Until we find a God, our military will have to suffice.â
âWe have troops undergoing training,â Takayuki supplies, rubbing his hands as a smile stretches across his face, âwe could send them to the front.â
âTheyâre yet untrained-â Tobio begins.
âTheyâve trained enough,â another councilor says, âthey will buy us time.â
You eye the twist of Tobioâs mouth, and the hungry gleam in your fatherâs eyes - if not for his wound, you wouldnât have thought him a man on deathâs door - and all you can think of is:Â the Kageyama dynasty has seen the rise of enough tyrants, we donât need another.Â
This is what you have been taught: there are no gods. They are not dead, they are not asleep, for they never were. All they had been were creations of mankind, a remembrance of humanityâs weaker days.Â
This is what you know: your father is hungry; the advisors to the throne see only the ornate court before their eyes. They, like you, know nothing of battle.
(If thereâs a God, please - donât let them take my brother.)

Your father is dead by morning.
You push a slip of paper into Hitokaâs hands and tell the guard outside your chambers to switch shifts with Tanaka.Â
âRyuu,â you say, as you draw the curtains of the floor-to-floor windows, leaving only one uncovered to allow light in, âdonât let anyone in, unless itâs Hitoka or Kiyoko. Or Noya.â You pause. âUnless theyâre not of my household,â you amend, âtell them Iâm mourning.â
âAh,â the knight says, âare you alright, mâlady?â He looks hopelessly lost and unsure, and you canât help but smile.
âOf course not,â you tell him, âIâm grieving.â Still smiling, you usher him towards the door. âNow, if youâll excuse me.â You shut the door and latch it.
Surveying your room, you clap your hands. âAlright,â you say, âletâs get to work.â
»»------------- ------------- ------------- € ------------- ------------- -------------««
By the time Hitoka returns from the Royal Archives an hour later, arms laden with scrolls and followed by Kiyoko, the latter easily carrying a tower of tomes, youâve succeeded in strewing parchment over almost every surface of your room.
âHitoka, Kiyoko,â you greet offhandedly, as you ball up yet another piece of parchment and throw it into the rapidly growing pile behind you, âwelcome back. Set those down by the bed, please.â
âY/n-sama,â you look up from scrutinizing a scroll to peer up at Kiyoko, âwhatâs all this?â
You blink. âWhy, Iâm looking for a God.â
Hitoka squeaks, nearly sending the scrolls in her hands tumbling. Kiyoko shows no outward signs of surprise.
âI see,â the Captain of your Personal Guard says after an extended silence, âis there one that you are looking for in particular?â
âIâll- Iâll bring up some tea,â Hitoka says quietly, inching towards the door, âexcuse me, mâlady.â
âI thought the Sun God would be a good place to start,â you continue, reaching for the pile of scrolls that youâd sent Hitoka to the Royal Archives for, âseeing as he used to be the patron deity of these lands.â Carefully, you untie the knot on the scroll, before remembering, âOh! At ease, Kiyoko.â
Kiyoko tips her head in thanks, and removes her scabbard, placing it by her side as she settles on an uncovered section of the floor. âWhat should I look for?â
Tapping your chin in thought, you hum as you scan over the scrollâs contents. âMyths, old stories of sightings, where his temples were located - anything you think might be important, really.â
Nodding, Kiyoko pries a tome off the top of the pile, and for a while, all there is is the rustle of yellowed pages.Â
»»------------- ------------- ------------- € ------------- ------------- -------------««Â
A week passes. You barely see your brother; your fatherâs advisors usher him behind closed doors.
When you finally do see him, all Tobio has to tell you is, âThey sent them to the front.â His expression twists into something that speaks of self-hatred, of guilt, âthey barely knew how to parry.â
The pinch in his brows, the unhappy tug of his lips, the shadows beneath his eyes - they all tell you one thing: youâre running out of time, and fast.
(When you hear that Arbor has gained another village, or three, you know that the men did not come back.)
You read scrolls by candlelight with Hitoka slumped against the foot of your bed, asleep. Kiyoko indulges you as well, dropping in for an hour or two in between her Captain duties.
A week passes before you stumble upon something useful.Â
There is a legend of a man who killed the God of the Sun, and as you and Kiyoko match the maps of the ancient empire that had existed where Sol now stands with maps of your kingdom, what you need to do comes to you with a sudden clarity.
Hitoka places one of your rings - hasty placeholders, because your chessboard has been missing ever since Takayuki had walked in on you mid-game with Kiyoko - on the map, at the outskirts of the capital, and youâve made up your mind.
âHitoka,â you say slowly, as the beginnings of a plan knits itself together, âbring me the clothes you wear when you are out in the capital.â
âWhat?â Your handmaiden asks, confused, at the same time that Kiyoko says, âPrincess, no.â
âItâs the only way,â you plead with your eyes. The knight youâd grown up with doesnât budge. âSurely you know it too.â
âIâm sorry,â Hitoka ventures timidly, as you and Kiyoko have a stare-off, âwhatâs going on?â
âHer Highness would like to have stew for dinner, before she turns in to bed early,â Kiyoko says, firmly.
âIâm leaving the palace,â you tell Hitoka.
Hitoka looks like sheâs about to faint.
âDonât be foolish,â Kiyoko crosses her arms, voice quiet but level, âwe are in the throes of war. While it pains me to do so, we must be cautious of even our own citizens. Have you not heard of the spies we caught at the border last month?â
âOh, I heard of it, alright. Father ordered them all killed,â you seethe, âNoya told me that they were only children.â You force yourself to take a breath, though your anger doesnât fade - it cools, sharpens from an explosive to the cutting edge of a rapier, âJust because heâs dead doesnât mean that Tobio is safe from his advisors.â
âThe Kingâs last field command or not, Iwaizumi-san will not send Kageyama-sama to the front lines so soon after the loss of the King.â
âKiyoko,â you stress, âArbor isnât the only enemy Iâm concerned about.â
Thereâs a pause, and you press forward, âIâm sure that Takayuki means to have Tobio barter with the God of War, or some other violent deity - more people will die.â
âBetter the enemy than our own,â is all Kiyoko says coldly, and you know that thereâs only one way this conversation can end.Â
Thereâs one last card you have to play, but itâs anything but a trump card.Â
âY/n, we have heard nothing of the Gods for centuries. Would the Sun God have stood by while we built our villages upon his lands and let his temples fall to ruin? Would he have let himself be forgotten?âÂ
They are not dead, they are not asleep, for they never were.
âGods donât die,â you repeat helplessly, âThe myths-â
âThe myth says that the first King of Sol killed the Sun God.â
Youâre only half-aware of Hitoka taking a nervous step towards the door, outside of which either Tanaka or Noya are probably stationed.Â
âShimizu,â you say, and your heart aches at the way you see your childhood friendâs face draw shut like the doors of your fatherâs court had that terrible morning when everything had fallen around you, âYou will address me as Kageyama-sama. We are not children anymore. You serve me - do not forget that.â
The silence snaps taut as a bowstring. Kiyoko sinks into a bow. âOf course, Your Highness. Please excuse my insubordination,â she says stiffly.
The arrow flies, and buries itself in the giving flesh of your heart.Â
Hitoka, brave handmaiden that she is, steps between you. âW-what do you intend to do at the temple of the Sun God?â
You force a smile. âIâll strike a bargain.â
»»------------- ------------- ------------- € ------------- ------------- -------------««
When you sneak out of your chambers the next night, Nishinoya is waiting by the door.
âKiyoko-san sent me,â he offers as explanation, and you nod. Knowing her, sheâd probably follow you from a distance anyway.Â
Nishinoya has traded his broadsword for a shortsword, its hilt rusty and a stark contrast to the way he keeps his broadsword - which he calls Rolling Thunder, for reasons you still werenât privy to - polished.Â
Youâre in Hitokaâs clothes; a linen tunic that scratches at your skin in a way that you are unaccustomed to. Your hair has been pinned and tied into a bun atop your head, covered by a raggedy cap.
(âThis is the best I can do,â Hitoka had fretted just minutes before, âbut mâlady, please be careful. Thereâs nothing I can do about the way you walk - a second glance and it will be clear to any that you are not common.â)
You slip out of the palace grounds through the door in the back that the servants used. The night air chills you to the bone, even through the well-worn coat Nishinoya had borrowed from Kinoshita, the stable-hand.Â
Passing through the capital, following closely behind Nishinoya as he leads you through a shortcut, you canât help but notice the way the opulence bleeds away till all thatâs left are ghostly streets.Â
The lampposts where oil lanterns used to hang are bare - likely stolen by the poor - and the few shreds of cloth clinging to the posts, vestiges of what had surely once been colourful banners boasting the royal crest, billow in the wind like ghouls.
Nishinoya follows your gaze. âThe war is old,â he says, âthe people are tired.â For all that he is shorter than you are, heâs never looked older than he does now; cast in shadow, barely touched by the moon. âAs are the soldiers.â
He grew up in the war too, you realize. His broad back, the ragged scar you know he sports on a muscled thigh.Â
âFor what itâs worth, Iâm sorry.â
You canât offer him a kingâs apology, but still, you wish itâs enough.
Nishinoya halts abruptly in his tracks, and you stumble as you almost bump into him. âIâm sorry-âÂ
âYou know,â he says suddenly, âback when I was only a foot soldier, we had a wimp of a commander. Heâd cave whenever the younger ones asked him for breaks, and he was always teased by the other commanders.â He pauses, swallowing.Â
You know exactly who heâs talking about.Â
âBut,â Nishinoya continues, sounding choked, âin battle, he was unmatched. Until the day I took a sword for him. Then,â and here, you think heâs angry - until you see the way his fists clench and unclench, and all you hear is sadness, âhe got scared. And getting scared on a battlefield is what gets us killed.â
(Asahi hadnât been afraid for his own life. You know this, in the same way you know that Noya blames himself for not being fast enough.
You know, that despite what he says, Noya still holds onto the hope that Asahi is alive.)
He turns, eyes meeting yours fearlessly, and you almost take a half-step back.Â
âI never got to tell him the words I wanted to say.â Your heart breaks at the words - so measured, so full of pain. âSo, Your Highness,â his eyes flash in the manner of swords in battle, âdonât apologize. Not to me, not to the people, not to Kiyoko-san. Apologies donât bring back childhoods, or the dead.âÂ
He softens, and when he speaks again, itâs almost a whisper. âDo better; take responsibility and rebuild what you broke. You donât rule a kingdom alone, you know.â
Shocked, you donât say anything for a moment. Remembering himself, Nishinoya bows at the waist. âOf course, I am but a knight, one of many. I apologize for speaking so forwardly.â
You wave him off. âNo,â you tell him, standing taller, ânothing you said was wrong. Thank you, Noya.â
He gives you a boyish smile. All it does is remind you that before the war, young men like him didnât have to carry swords everywhere, nor were their bodies littered with scars.
You travel the rest of the way in silence; you think you hear Kiyokoâs footfalls following as the cobbled paths give way to dirt roads.
Beneath the watchful gaze of the moon, bright in a cloudless sky, you trudge, pulling your cloak tighter around you at a sudden gust of wind that whips the surrounding grit and sand into your eyes. Your cap flies off your head, and you fumble blindly after it a moment too late. Impossibly, you think you hear a boyâs laughter, and feel the ghost of slender fingers plucking the pins from your hair.
When the dust settles, youâre greeted with the sight of sprawling ruins.
âWell, Your Highness,â Nishinoyaâs hand drifts to rest lightly on the hilt of his sword. âLooks like weâve found our ruins.â
âNo, Noya,â you say softly, as you begin forward, âit found us.â
»»------------- ------------- ------------- € ------------- ------------- -------------««
You enter the ruins alone. Youâre not sure what youâll encounter, and you donât want Nishinoya there for what you plan to say to the God of the Sun.
The moment you step through the largest pillars at the top of the steps, the air changes.
The chill of the night doesnât fade so much as it disappears entirely, like a sudden snap of fingers that cuts the silence in two. Hazy heat folds into the air around you, intertwining in shimmering mirages that flicker and dissipate when you reach out a cautious hand, only to weave back into existence a step away.Â
You canât stop yourself from following them - you canât tell what it is that you are chasing, only that you feel an inexplicable need to follow, donât let it out of your sight, now.Â
You wander deeper into the ruins, past crumbling columns, over cracked marble. In your ears, something ancient croons a gentle song that reaches down your throat and wraps itself around your lungs, till all you breathe are archaic notes too impossible for you to understand.Â
Something unseen brushes past your arm.Â
The spell breaks, and your hand flies to the dagger at your side as boyish laughter echoes off the ivy-strewn columns, ringing in the cracks of the marble.Â
âSun God,â you say carefully, forcing your hand back by your side, âI, Crown Princess of Sol, request an audience with you.â You strain your ears in the silence that follows.
Youâre about to speak again, when a pebble skitters across the ground behind you.
When you turn, there is no one there.
You take a step back, and the next time you open your eyes after a blink, a young man is standing before you, close enough to touch.
No, you correct yourself, a young God.
At nineteen years-old, you stand in peasantsâ clothes in the ruins of a temple whose god your people have forgotten, and look into the amber eyes of the boy whoâd taught you the right way to grip a sword.
âCrown Princess of Sol,â the God says, and you register, faintly, that he sounds amused. âWhat business do you have with me?â
The Sun God is the boy you met in the palace gardens when you were fourteen. Impossibly, it makes sense. The edges of the puzzle fit together nicely, like cogs in the great clock-tower that stands in the Plaza of the capital.Â
He looks much as he had five years ago. Lined with black kohl, his eyes still dance between brown and gold - amber, no, a hue that mortals cannot hope to name. His hair, which you had once thought of as the colour of the sky at sunset, now seems to beckon in the rosy manner of dawn.Â
Where he stands, a light seems to cushion the world around him. AÂ candle, you muse, but no, this light is strong and real - it will not flicker at a mere mortalâs breath.Â
You remember, belatedly, that heâd asked you a question.
âSun God,â you hastily avert your eyes, dropping into what is perhaps the deepest curtsy youâve ever performed, never mind that youâre in a tunic. âI come with a proposal.â
âOh?â Heâs definitely curious, now - you can hear it in his voice. It feels almost childish, the wonder and interest that he so plainly displays.
âSol has been at war with Arbor for fifteen long years,â you say, âthe enemy have recently procured the favour and strength of a God. Our people are weary - we want an end to the bloodshed.â
âYou wish for me to raze the enemy?â He sounds disappointed, and you resist the urge to lift your head and see his expression.Â
âNo,â you correct respectfully, âI believe the people of Arbor are tired as well - this war is one that only our Kings are eager to win, and Solâs King is no more. What I am here to request of you, mighty Sun God, is the death of Arborâs King, who we believe to be the one who has made a bargain with the God.â
A pause. Tendrils of heat weave their way around you lazily, caressing your cheek, your arms.Â
You fix your eyes on his bare feet, two thin gold circlets around each slim ankle.
Then, âWhat can you offer me?âÂ
Ah, the question youâve been waiting for.Â
Iâm glad Nishinoya agreed to stay outside.Â
âIf you would grant us your grace and strength,â you begin calmly, âit would mark the return of the gods.â In a sudden burst of courage, you lift your head to look the God in the eye - though for reasons you cannot explain, you feel that he is not a God who would smite you where you stand without due reason. âFor the head of a king, I offer you the life of a queen - surely that is a fair trade.â
The God clucks his tongue. âAh, so youâre a sacrifice, then?â
You smile, something smooth and serene. âNot a sacrifice, but an exchange.â Spreading your hands, you let the calm you feel within you seep into your posture, and savour the surprise you can see lighting up his eyes. âIf you should deem fit to kill me in exchange for peace between the kingdoms, then let it be so; for those are the terms of the bargain.â
You drop your hands, and dare to let the edges of your lips tilt upwards, just slightly, in the barest hints of a defiant challenge. âBut do not, then, call my death a sacrifice, for what it will be is merely the fulfillment of a transaction.â
The God surveys you a moment longer, and you force yourself to look him dead in the eyes.Â
(Look, this is the Crown Princess of Sol.)
The Sun God smiles, wide and beaming. âVery well. Consider us bound by the terms which you have laid. My name is Hinata Shouyou - you may call me what you wish.â
(The future Queen of Sol, now the lamb on an altar.
A gravestone, you say?
No, a mantle she placed on her own proud shoulders.)
You curtsy, lifting imaginary skirts, spine straight and head bowed - refined elegance in the way that you have been taught. âOn behalf of the people of Sol, we thank you for your Grace.â
(Look, look closely - and youâll see what she once was.)

1950âs. When Kageyama, the 18-year-old son of a world-famous cryptozoologist, gets invited by his dad to come along with him on a work trip to the Dominican Republic, he reluctantly accepts. Running around finding âmythical creaturesâ in a topical island didnât sound like too bad of a vacation.
But when the work trip ends up being him and his dadâs crew trekking through a creepy rainforest in the outskirts of D.R, he starts regretting his choices. Things take a turn for the worse when he gets separated from the rest of the groupâbut a pointy-eared Meno named Hinata comes to his rescue.
Rating: General |Pairing: KageHina |Tags: 1950s Dominican Folkore AU, Fluff and Humor, Mythical Creatures
[Ao3]
It was summer break during Kageyamaâs first year in university, and he was taking in a deep breath of tropical air as he stepped out of his family jet and onto the ground of the Dominican Republic. Â But this wasnât just some breezy vacationâhe was here with his dad, world-famous cryptozoologist Takeo Kageyama, and the two other guys in his crew, for work. His dad had dragged him along claiming it was a belated âgraduation tripâ when it was actually an attempt to get Kageyama interested in cryptozoology. Kageyama was unwilling at first, especially since he was very skeptical of his fatherâs career, but relented, figuring itâd be nice to get out of Japan for the first time in his life.
âSeñor Kageyama?â asked a young man with a heavy accent, the gold buttons in his olive military uniform catching the harsh sunlight. âCome with me, the car is waiting,â he said in mangled Japanese.
The man led them to a shiny black car, helped them put their things in the trunk, and then climbed onto the driverâs seat, large rifle tucked to the side of the car door. They drove to the Palacio Nacional, a beautiful, large white building that housed the offices of the executive branch of the government, and where Takeo was going to meet with President Trujillo. Takeo had explained during the flight that Trujillo had hired him to make an extensive report on the rumored mythical creatures roaming the rainforests of Palma Herrada. He wanted an assessment of the existence of these creatures, and if the conditions were safe enough for the expensive excursions he wanted to offer tourists who liked a bit of thrill.  Takeo went inside Trujilloâs heavily guarded office as the rest of them sat on a bench in the hallway. Kageyama took his eyes away from the meticulously polished floors to the view outside a nearby open window; it was just miles of vibrant green palm trees and clear blue skies.  The meeting was brief. After about ten minutes, Takeo stepped out of the office and the same young man escorted them back to the car to give them a ride to Palma Herrada. The drive was a bit over three hours of comfortable silence, only disturbed with Takeoâs occasional interrogation of the the young man on his half Japanese, half Dominican heritage, hobbies, and something or another. Kageyama tried to zone out his fatherâs stupidity by closing his eyes and focusing on the warm breeze coming through the carâs open windows. The air had this fresh, sweet taste to it but as they approached Palma Herrada, it started turning unpleasantly saccharine.  The car stopped in front of a small, bright turquoise cottage near the edge of the rainforest and they all got out, taking their luggage from the trunk.  âUse this place for sleep,â explained the young man who they now knew was named Reo. âI will pick you up in three days.â  Takeo nodded and yelled âGraciasâ as Reo drove off. They walked into the cottage, pleasantly surprised to find it well accommodated with electricity, four single sized beds, a few fans, and a small kitchen. After each of them claimed their bed and settled down for a few minutes, Kageyama decided to break the silence.  âI still canât believe you accepted a job from a vicious dictator,â he stated while glaring across the room at his dad.  Takeo pushed up his glasses and took a seat on his bed with a sigh. âI know itâs shameless and am well aware that Trujillo is awfulâŠbut a rare chance like this doesnât pop up often.â  âYour dad is a man led by his curiosity, not reason,â offered Akio with a chuckle.  Fumi clapped his hands in agreement. âThatâs very true. You came along this time, Tobio-kun, but at least you arenât always being dragged to strange places by your father like we are.â  âOkay, enough poking fun at me,â Takeo said as he stood up. âLetâs make some dinner.â  But instead of helping, Kageyama lay back on the bed and stared at the ceiling. He was feeling quite a few things, but the strongest emotion had to be regret. As grateful as he was for the few hours of seeing the island, starting tomorrow heâd be spending three days in close proximity to his strange dad, and if that werenât bad enough, theyâd be trekking up and down some âhauntedâ forest. He obviously didnât think through the pros and cons of this trip carefully enough.  After a heaping serving of black bean chili and fried green plantains (courtesy of their patron), and a few rounds of Old Maid, they all went to bed in preparation for the very early morning ahead of them.
The rainforest was a pathless mass of dewy greens and browns, and strangely cool in temperature. The harsh sunlight was filtered by the tall trees and landed as a soft shimmering yellow. It had been about an hour since Kageyama and the rest of them had started exploring this beautiful and eerie forest, and there was a feeling Kageyama couldnât shake since entering.  âHey guysâŠhavenât youâd had the feeling that somethingâs been watching us for a while now?â Kageyama asked as he slowly looked around them once more. He was dressed in a red Hawaiian short-sleeve shirt, beige shorts, beige wide brim hat, sneakers, and a big backpack.  âYes!â Akio and Fumi said in unison as they turned back to look at Kageyama.  Takeo continued walking as he exclaimed, âI do too, and doesnât that mean weâll find something exciting? Lets keep going!â  But suddenly something dashed out of a tree a few yards in front of them and ran further into the forest. Takeo started running and the rest of them followed suit, but as soon as they passed the tree that creature had emerged from, Kageyama lost sight of the rest of crew. He broke to a stop, the hair on his body standing on end, and blinked hard. Nothing.  âDad?!...â He yelled as he searched around, walking a few feet past the tree, and then around it. âAkio?! Fumi?!â  Somewhere in his gut Kageyama understood this was of a supernatural flavor, but he continued walking the path his father had planned for them. It wasnât easyâeverything was beginning to look the same, as if he was circling without realizing it, and though time seemed to never move, by the way the sun was dimming he knew darkness would come eventually. Regardless, he continued on. But with every step he took without any sign of progress, the deeper the furrow between his eyebrows grew and the harder his heart beat against his chest.  In this moment of bubbling panic was when a guy just a foot or so shorter than Kageyama nonchalantly walked out of the trunk of a nearby tree. Kageyama whipped his head to glare at him, figuring he had finally lost it. The guy had vibrant orange hair, pointy ears, and tan skin with blue leaf and vine patterns curving around his lean arms, legs, and exterior torso. He was barefoot and dressed in a rust-brown cropped tank and skirt made out of leaves and vines. Kageyama took a shaky breath and closed his eyes really tightly, counting to himself for a few seconds before he opened them again. Yep, the weirdo was still there.  âYou arenât imagining things,â the guy said with lively, musical laughter.  âWho-What are you?â Kageyama muttered. ââŠAnd youâre speaking Japanese?â  The guy took a step closer to Kageyama, lips curling up into a childish smile. âOh, is that the name of this language? Itâs one of my skills since Iâm a meno. And it was probably one of my siblings that drew the rest of those guys away.â  Kageyama looked him up and down once more, hoping that staring at the guy a bit longer would give him more information than the non-answer he just got. âA meno?â  âYup, a meno. My nameâs Hinata.â He slowly circled around Kageyama with playfulness in his step. âMy siblings get bored easily and itâs rare to find a traveler this deep in the rainforest, so they played a prank on you guys. The forest is enchanted and also mischievous. It purposely changes up paths to make travelers get lost.â  âBut you know your way around, right?â  âI do.â Hinata stood facing Kageyama. âI can help you find the rest of your group, but you must offer me an item from the outside world.â  Kageyama furrowed his eyebrows and took off his backpack, emptying out the contents inside and organizing them into two piles: essential items and things he could do without. He pointed at the latter pile and looked up at Hinata. âYou can take anything from here.â  Hinata crouched down and started excitedly sifting through the pile. His eyes landed on a gold compact mirror and he picked it up, fingers gliding across the top and the side as they gently opened it. His face light up and those golden eyes twinkled with fascination when he saw his reflection. âThis one,â he whispered and stood up, still looking at himself.  Kageyama packed his things and walked beside Hinata. âIs it strange to see your reflection?â he asked, amused and a bit endeared by Hinataâs fascination with the compact mirror.  âYes. I never get a chance to see myself this clearly. I had an idea of what I looked like from staring at my reflection in the river, but seeing my face this clearly reminds me that I really donât look like the rest of my family.â  âWhy?â Kageyama asked as he lifted a big leaf out of Hinataâs way.  Hinata closed the compact and held it in his hands behind his back. âI was originally human,â he explained and glanced over at Kageyama. âLos Menos steal children that arenât baptized and turn them into one of themâbut the spell didnât fully work on me. I still age and look like a human boy, well, aside from the pointy ears and the blue markings on my skin, but I have the powers of a meno.â Hinata shrugged, a smile gracing his lips. âAnd my family still cares for me even if I look different.â  âWhat kind of powers do meno have?â  âWe have an incredible sense of hearing and sight, especially in the dark, ability to understand and mimic any language, and we are invisible to the human eye.â Hinata brought his hands forward, held the compact up in the air, and then disappeared. âWeâre only visible when we want to be,â he explained, moving his hand around to make it seem as if the compact were floating.  âWoahâŠâ  Hinata giggled and appeared again, face beaming. âCool, right?â  âYeah.â Kageyama pulled on the straps of his backpack. âBut if youâre usually invisible to humans, while did you decide to show yourself to me?â  Hinataâs smile turned into a cocky smug and he skipped ahead, walking backwards in front of Kageyama and staring him straight in the eyes. Around them, the forest glowed a dim blueâthe same enchanting color of the patterns on Hinataâs skin. âBecause you looked so panicked I thought you might cry.â  âI would not.â Kageyama stammered.  âYeah, sure.â Hinata snickered. âIt was also the first time I had seen a human boy this close. The locals avoid going deep into the forest because they know of all the creatures that roam itâŠso youâre obviously not from around here.â  Kageyama shook his head. âNo, Iâm from a country called Japan. My dad is in the group that I got separated from and he dragged me along because Trujillo asked him to research the creatures in this forest, and possibly get proof that they exist.â  Hinataâs eyes narrowed and he folded his arms across his chest. âThe rainforest can sense intentions and she grows angry when they arenât pure. You must leave as soon as possible; the forest is extremely dangerous for humans once the moon is out. Especially on a night of a full moon like tomorrow.â  âWhat do you ââ  Hinata turned invisible and pushed Kageyama from behind, quietly warning, âBe very careful.â And the forest that had felt magical for that while of them walking together, was now dark and frightening.  Kageyama couldnât spare a second to panic over Hinataâs disappearance because he immediately saw his father and the rest of the crew a few feet in front of him, near an exit. His dad rushed to him, lightly bopped him in the head, and pulled him into a quick hug while letting out a loud sigh of relief.  âWe were so worried! How did you even get separated from us? One moment you were right behind and the next you were nowhere in sight.â  âThe forest changes its paths to get humans lost. I donât know if you guys will believe meâŠâ Kageyama took a step away from his father and tried to catch his eyes in the weak glow of Akioâs flashlight. âI met a meno.â  âMeno?â Takeo pulled out the notepad he used to compile research before a trip and borrowed Akioâs flashlight to scan through his most recent pages. âLos MenosâŠâ he read out loud, âsmall, blue mischievous forest creatures usually invisible to the human eye. Yes, thatâs definitely the creature we where chasing earlier, though I only got a glimpse of it.â  âThis meno I met, Hinata, showed himself to me and guided me back to you guys. He also warned us to leave the forest immediately. Itâs especially dangerous for humans at night, and will be even more dangerous tomorrow since itâs a night of a full moon.â  âA full moon, huhâŠâ Takeo muttered to himself as he continued to read through his notes, Kageyamaâs warning having no effect. âLos Menos would be hard to catch a picture or recording of since they are usually invisible, but if we could at least get footage of another creature. Ah, here!â He pointed at his entry on âCiguapaâ and read it out loud, âA creature that appears during a full moon as a beautiful, brown skin woman with silky floor length hair. She lures men deep into the rainforest to her lair, sucking out their souls once sheâs captured them. She is hard to track because of her backwards feet.â  Kageyamaâs bit his bottom lip and balled his fists at his sides. âLets. Leave. Iâve seen a meno, and Iâve seen what this forest can do. Itâs not a joke.â  âWe will leave for tonight.â Takeo stated as he tucked his notepad under his arm. âBut we will return tomorrow and stay until midnight.â  âNo way.â Kageyama marched ahead of the group and out of the forest to the sweet relief of cottages with lights, and humans, in the distance. âIf you three want to get snatched by a Ciguapa, then youâll be doing that alone.â  They all returned to the cottage in silence, had a simple dinner where Takeo and his crew discussed plans for the next day while Kageyama continued to glare disapprovingly, and quickly went to bed. But while the rest of them easily fell asleep, a cacophony of snores filling the air, Kageyama lay awake with his eyes closed. Now alone with his thoughts he could place the familiar discomfort he had been feeling since returning to the cottageâit was that prickly sensation of being watched by something hiding in the darkness. But he was tired of surprises, and if he were being honest with himself, quite scared, so he squeezed his eyelids shut until sleep finally overtook him.  That night he dreamt of Hinata. And saw an after image of Hinataâs face in the brilliant rays of morning sunlight filling the cottage.  âWeâre heading out,â Takeo said once he noticed Kageyama sitting up. âYou sure you donât want to come?â  Kageyama ruffled his own hair as he let out a loud yawn. âIâm positive. Good luck, dad.â  âOkay. Hold down the fort for us, then. See you tonight,â Takeo replied with a light chuckle and shut the door behind him. Kageyama sighed and lay back again, staring at the ceiling for a long while longer before getting out of bed to start his day of ease. He brushed his teeth and scarfed down the quick cheese and mashed plantain breakfast he clumsily prepared for himself. He then changed into a blue tropical button-up identical to his red one, emptied out his backpack until it only had the essentials, put on his hat, and headed out the door to explore the town.  He wasnât the greatest with directions so he took extra care to note where their cottage was, and made sure to only stick to the townâs main road. The walk was somewhat challengingâthe countryside was hilly and the road was rough, but the tenants of the nearby cottages cheerfully waved and smiled at him, so he was having a pleasant time. After a few hours of strolling, often stopping to take in the view or buy a treat from a traveling vendor, Kageyama found a small river that cut through the town. He decided itâd be the perfect spot to settle in for lunch.  Kageyama followed it downstream a few feet so heâd be far enough away from the main road that he could have some privacy, but close enough so he could find it again. He unpacked his water, bananas, cheese, and bread, and ravenously ate it all as he did with every meal. He sat around watching the sky as his stomach digested his food, and then stripped down to his briefs to take a quick dip. The water was a pristine blue and blissfully refreshing, and he just stood there, the water slowly moving around him, with his eyes closed and face enjoying the brilliantly warm sun.  But his peace was interrupted by a splash nearby. When he opened his eyes, there was no one around, and suddenly all the puzzle pieces came together.  âHinata,â he said curtly.  âYou caught me,â Hinata responded with a cheery giggle as he made himself visible, standing only a foot or so away from Kageyama. He walked closer with a smirk. âWhen did you notice?â  âLast night. Why are you following me?â  Hinata looked at him blankly and then looked down at the water, his fingers slowly threading in and out of it as he thought in silence. After a few moments he looked up again and shrugged, an easy smile on his lips. âIâm not sure. I find you interesting.â  Kageyama scoffed. âItâs only because Iâm the first guy my age youâve met thatâs crazy enough to talk to you.â  âThatâs not it. Youâre definitely special,â he insisted.  âSure,â Kageyama muttered and sunk into the water to swim around for a while. He went completely under, opening his eyes to look down at the grey, pearly floor of rocks and the head of bright orange swimming next to him. Unlike Kageyama who had averageâborderline mediocreâswimming skills, Hinata moved around the water like he was born breathing it. He circled Kageyama with ease, swimming above and then under him, weaving playfullyâit was beautiful. He was beautiful.  Kageyama went up for air, standing up in the river and slicking his hair back out of his face. âAre all meno that good at swimming?â  âNo, not really. Weâre all decent swimmers, but I spent a lot of time playing in the river out of boredom so I got really good at it.â  âOh.â Kageyama walked to the bank of the river, sat down with a content sigh, and kept his feet in the water.  Hinata followed suit, sitting only a few inches away from him and staring at his face with a silly, curious smile. âSoâŠâ  âWhatâŠ?â âTell me about the outside world!â  Kageyama signaled to their surroundings. âYou are in the outside world. Donât you know about it already?â  âNo. Iâve never gone this far away from the rainforest before. Itâs dangerous to be this far away from home in case someone manages to catch me and experiment on me or somethingâŠalso my magic is not as strong when I am outside of the forest. â  âOkay, then. What do you want to know?â  Hinata kicked his feet in the water excitedly and leaned closer, eyes glimmering. âWhatâs it feel like to ride in those bird looking machines that fly in the air?â  âA plane? It feels normal. I try not to think too much about the fact that we are thousands of miles up in the air.â  âWas it a plane that brought you from your country of Japan?â  âYeah, we have a family jetâoh, a jet is just a smaller plane.â  Hinataâs eyes widened. âYou have your own jet?! Those must be expensive, right? Are you rich?â  âNot rich, but we are comfortable, I guess.â  âSo cool.â  Kageyama glanced over at Hinata. âUh, so if youâre real, many other mythical creatures must be real too.â  âWell,â Hinata hummed in thought. âMost of them are, but a few are just stories humans made up. There are a few of us that are really scary, but the scariest legends are things humans exaggerated. Itâs the stupid little ones like Ratoncito Perez that are completely true.â  âRatoncito Perez?â  âYour dad didnât tell you about him?!â Hinata beamed.  To which Kageyama shook his head ânoâ and not a second later Hinata was gleefully, and without catching his breath, telling Kageyama about the little magical mouse with a straw hat that collected childrenâs baby teeth from under their pillows. He explained that he had met Perez once, and that he was definitely the nicest, and softest little creature in all of the Dominican Republic. Kageyama just nodded along and watched Hinataâs face, finding his range of facial expressions much more interesting than his story about a tooth fairy rat.  âIs there another creature you want me to tell you about?â  âNo, I think Iâm okay for now,â Kageyama said as he stood up to put on his pants and shirt. He left the shirt completely unbuttoned, and swung his bag on his back. âThe sun is setting so we should walk around a bit longer to dry off and then head back.â  Hinata nodded and walked next to Kageyama toward the main road, completely visible.  âIs it okay to walk around like this? Donât the locals know what you are?â  âIâm only visible to you right now. I can choose who exactly can see me.â Hinata stuck his tongue out devilishly. âSo if you talk too loudly, anyone who passes will think youâre not right in the head and are talking to yourself.â  âOh.â  And with that they started their comfortably silent trek back to the cottage. They walked steadily, watching the people settle outside their cottages for a game of dominos or just to sit around to exchange stories that made laughter rise up to the sky. Hinata would stop occasionally to pull out any colorful flowers he saw blooming near the road and to pet every cow or stray dog that they encountered. All the animals eagerly leaned their heads into Hinataâs small hand as if they could sense his warmth and magic and as if they knew how nice his touch would feel.  By the time they made it back, it was nightfall and everything was pitch black aside from the eerie gleam of the full moon. Kageyama entered the cottage first, turned on the light, and somehow managed, by the skin of his teeth, to not scream when a little blue person appeared right by his hip.  âFucking hell,â he breathed out.  Hinata snickered and stood next to the mysterious meno. âThis is Rele, my younger brother.â  Rele waved at Kageyama and then turned to Hinata. His lips moved, but no sound came out. At least, it wasnât a sound that Kageyamaâs human, non-magical ears could discern. Kageyama stared at them as they talked to each other in what he could only guess was the meno language, and patiently waited for Hinata to tell him what was making his face scrunch up.  âI knew this would happen,â Hinata muttered, eyes now locked to Kageyamaâs. âYour dad and his friends were enchanted by the Ciguapa.â  âWait, what?!â  âGrab you bag and make sure to pack matches, oil, and a piece of wood! We have to act fast if you want to save them,â he urged, helping Kageyama scramble around for the materials. Once they were packed, Hinata grabbed Kageyama by the hand and they began running.  As they rushed into the forest, the leaves around them glowing in that beautiful dim blue, Hinata explained the plan. It was simple, but dangerous. And heâd have to do it completely alone because Hinata helping him, and getting caught, would cause tension between Los Menos and the Ciguapas. But that was fine. It was just some pretty, soul sucking, backwards-feet lady, right? If Hinata hadnât helped him yesterday he would have probably been eaten by something already, so what better way to use his second shot at life than to save his idiot father and crew?  âThere they are,â Hinata whispered as they crouched by some trees. âTheyâre in a trance so donât even bother trying to wake them up. Just hide among them and do what I told you.â  âOkay.â Kageyama took a deep breath. âI hope I donât die.â  Hinata squeezed his hand, shining a reassuring smile. âYou wonât, I promise. Iâll be right here.â  Hinata then turned invisible and Kageyama took that as a sign to prepare his weapon. He pulled the slab of wood out of his bag, doused the end of it in oil, and held his lighter tightly in his other hand. He slipped out from behind the trees and caught up to the guys, following closely behind them with the slab hidden behind his back.  Their destination was just a few minutes away by trance walking, and struggling through thick foliage and a short, rocky path. The Ciguapaâs lair was a well-hidden cave in darkness so black, it made Kageyamaâs sweat turn cold. He brought the slab to the front of him and held his lighter to it, thumb ready to press at any moment.  There was a sound of bare feet approaching them. And something dragging across the ground.  Kageyama held his breath and closed his eyes.  He could sense her. And if he tried hard enough, his ears picked up on the tiny noises she made as she circled in on them. He just had to wait until she was close enough.  Wait.  Wait⊠ His thumb pressed the lighter just as her breath grazed his ear and the end of the wood ignited in a lively fire. Kageyama swung it at her face and she let out an ungodly shriek, jumping back into a crouch while shielding her face with her arms. Kageyama took a step toward her, threateningly pointing the fire at her, and she crawled to the exit of the cave, quickly coming up onto her two backwards feet to run away into the trees.  âWhere are we?â Takeo mumbled as he looked around him in a haze. Akio and Fumi were also in a similar state of stupefied, â I just woke up from almost getting murdered by a Ciguapaâ.  Kageyama just let out an exasperated sigh and held the fire above him. âFollow me. Once we get out of this creepy cave Iâll explain everything.â  They returned to the spot where Kageyama had parted from Hinata, and Kageyama threw the slab to the dirt round, stomping the fire out. They werenât even a second in total darkness until the area shimmered blue and Hinata appeared next to Kageyama. The other guys made some sound of amazement, and maybe a slight tinge of fear, but Kageyama dismissed their worry.  âItâs fine. This is Hinata, the meno I told you about yesterday.â  Takeo ducked closer to get a good look. âHeâs not fully blueâŠand looks very human.â  âItâs complicatedâŠAnyhow,â Hinata folded his arms across his chest. âYou all must leave this forest and not return. Other creatures are now well aware of your presence. Only worse things will happen if you stay any longer.â  âYes, youâre right,â Takeo lamented. âIâm sorry, I should have listened to Tobio, and the warning you gave him. Weâll leave right away.â  Fumi and Akio nodded insistently. âFinally, the first reasonable thing youâve said since we started this trip.â  Hinata chuckled and put his fingers to his lips as if to whistle, but again, it was inaudible. A few moments later, Rele, or the meno Kageyama thought to be Rele, and three other small blue meno formed a circle around them and they all started walking, with Hinata leading the pack.  âWhen we form a circle around you like this, we can make you invisible as well.â Hinata explained.  They made it out of the rainforest with ease, bowing and giving thanks to Hinataâs family for their protection. Takeo and the guys eagerly marched ahead to their cottage while Kageyama lingered behind, shooting Hinata a glance that he hoped heâd understand. Hinata smirked and turned to his family to say something. The other menos returned to the forest and Hinata walked Kageyama back to the cottage, stopping a few feet away from the front door.  âT-Thanks, by the way,â Kageyama murmured, hand rubbing the back of his neck. ââŠI guess this is the last time Iâll see you?â  Hinata laughed, though it was laced with a bit of regret. âYes, I guess it is. From the spooked look on you and your companionâs faces, I doubt youâll be stepping into this rainforest ever again.â  âTrue.â Kageyama furrowed his eyebrows. âWhat if youââ He cut himself off with a hard shake of his head. He was thinking stupid things. How did he grow so attached to what was basically a forest gnome to the point that he almost asked him to come home with him? It was definitely the magic, spells, enchantments, and whatever else, talking.  Hinata touched his forearm and stepped in front of him, gaze locked. âWhat were you going to ask?â  âIt was stupid,â Kageyama insisted. âItâs just the magic getting to my head.â  Hinataâs eyes lost a bit of their glimmer and his smile faded as gave Kageyama tiny, sad smile. âOkay.â  âI meanââ  Hinata swiftly pressed his lips to Kageyamaâs and stepped back, whispering, âThis is the human âI like youâ, right?â And he disappeared, an echo of his âbye-byeâ blown away by the night breeze.  To say the least, Kageyama did not get a wink of sleep.  And neither did Takeo, since he spent most of the night writing his report and sketching what he saw while the images were still fresh in his head. When morning arrived they all gathered their belongings, had a pitiful breakfast from the scraps left in the kitchen, and quietly waited for the Reo to come pick them up as Takeo had requested last night.  âWhat is the conclusion of your report?â Kageyama asked as they loaded their things into Reoâs trunk.  âOf course, that no one is to step into that forest!â Takeo exclaimed. âIâm adventurous, Tobio. Not stupid.â  Kageyama laughed through his nose. âGood.â  On the ride back to the Palacio Nacional Kageyama knocked out, and only woke up to his father returning to the car having presented his report and received his payment. Kageyama was too tired to ask him about Trujilloâs reaction to the conclusion of the report.  Reo drove them to their jet that was ready and waiting to take them back to Japan. It all seemed very rushed to Kageyama, who wondered what the harm of checking into a hotel and sightseeing for a few days would be, but then again, he figured that his father missed the comfort and non-magicalness of his own home just as much as Kageyama did. And also, the Dominican Republic was currently run by a dictator with a short fuse who at any moment could decide that the unsatisfactory results of Takeoâs report had to be punished⊠ But really, who cares. He just wanted sleep.  Kageyama climbed up into the jet, picked a window seat near the back, and quickly fell asleep. He woke up what seemed to be few hours later, groggy and head pounding with a headache. He reached to the seat next to him for his bag, where he had water and aspirin, but instead he touched a tan leg. His eyes traveled up the personâs body and saw a familiar mischievous smile.  Hinata was sitting next to him.   âHoly fucââ

Entering the Gateway
The world of anime is split into two major genres: shounen and shoujo. Shounen is Japanese for "boy", which is the target audience for this style of anime". This is where you'll find adventure, sports and fighting. The counterpart is shoujo which means "girl", and the animes are about romance, daily life, and drama. These are used to categorize the plot/content in animes, but at the end they're just words. Watch whatever you like! Here are some recommendations that cover a wide range of interests. Hopefully they can encourage exploration into the world of anime!
Interest: Sports Haikyuu! Synopsis: Hinata Shoyo loves volleyball more than anything in the world. Without a proper team in middle school, he's unable to make it very far. Kageyama Tobio is a proclaimed 'genius' at volleyball but has a misunderstood ego that turns his own team on him. These two opposites collide at Karasuno High School and aim to become a part of the best volleyball team. Personal note: Truth be told, I am still in the middle of watching Haikyuu. I've heard so much about it from EVERYWHERE and do like how it's different from other shounen animes. Sports animes are a sub-genre in itself, but the likable characters and easy-to-follow plot make this anime great to start with! Where to watch: Netflix, Crunchyroll Anime Planet, anywhere honestly
Interest: Superheroes My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero) Synopsis: In this world, many are born with a 'quirk' or a superpower. Some use theirs for good, some for evil. All Might is the hero amongst heroes and uses his quirk to save countless people. But he has a secret that very few can know. Midoriya Izuku (or Deku) was born without a quirk and wants to be just like All Might. He receives All Might's quirk and the series follows him on his journey to be the number one hero.Â
Personal note: If you love superheroes, then this is a must-watch! My Hero reminds me a little bit of Marvel where you get to see the backstories of multiple heroes. You get to root for them as they improve their abilities and fight complex villains. Â Whilst this is a shounen anime because of the action-packed scenes, who doesn't like watching heroes kick some ass? Where to watch: Crunchyroll, Anime Planet, kissanime
Interest: Romance My Love Story!! (Ore Monogatari) Synopsis: Takeo Goda is perceived as an tall and intimidating highschooler by nearly everyone around him. In reality, he has a heart of gold and just no luck with girls. When Rinko Yamato is assaulted on the subway, he comes to her rescue. A beautiful and wholesome love story blossoms in this short and loveable shoujo anime. Personal: The epitome of a shoujo anime. My Love Story!! is sweet, short, and cute. The art style is endearing and pleasing to the eye, whilst the character's emotions are relatable. If you're a hopeless romantic and just want to watch two people fall in love then this is the anime for you! Where to watch: Crunchyroll, Hulu, kissanime
