It’s a…!
The story is based on a private RP and written together with @ruki-mukami-dl and @nalia-tsukino (thank you for portraying doctor Kageyama Takeo).
The gel on Yuriko’s lower belly was as cold as ever, making her shiver slightly. Or perhaps, there was another reason for her quivering after all. What if something was wrong? She had been feeling okay, but there was always a chance that everything wouldn’t go well… and with such a special baby. There weren’t many Vampire-Kitsune hybrids, weren’t there?
Holding Ruki’s hand, Yuriko didn’t voice out her worries. They had talked about this before, with the doctor, Kageyama Takeo, too. The man would have told them if there was a problem. So, Yuriko inhaled, focusing her gaze on the screen with the black and white view.
Such tiny feet and hands. Last time, the baby had looked more like a scrimp, but now, the human form was clear. Not a fox but a human.
Thump thump. Thump thump. Thump thump.
The steady sound of the bouncing heart. Ruki was able to hear it if he pressed his ear on Yuriko’s belly, but she could only listen to this song of life here.
Thump thump. Thump thump. Thump thump.
“Everything is well with the baby. The size is perfect, too.” The doctor's voice sailed into Yuriko’s ears, but she didn’t move her gaze from the screen. “Would you like to know the gender?”
Slowly, Ruki turned his head. The storm of his eyes glued to Yuriko as he squeezed her hand a bit too roughly. Yuriko didn’t mention it, for her heart had just become jumpy. The blue-gray depth moved back to the monitor. “I’d like to know.”
“Umh… me too.” Yuriko’s words wavered in her own ears as well, but she confirmed them with a nod. Of course, it didn’t matter if the baby was a boy or a girl. Still, she couldn’t help but be curious.
Ruki was already staring at the screen, leaning in a bit with a frown between his brows as if he had sunk deep into his thoughts.
“Since you both agree…” The doctor cleared his throat. “As you can see here…”
Yuriko lifted her glasses a bit but didn’t dare to move otherwise. Even with the doctor explaining everything, she couldn’t see any indicator of either boy or girl. She could only take his word for it, but of course, she trusted this man.
“So, in spring, you will be welcoming home a baby girl.”
A baby girl.
Yuriko’s heart hopped, and she couldn’t prevent her lips from curling as she searched for Ruki’s gaze. He looked calm and collected as if the information did not affect him.
Thump thump. Thump thump. Thump thump.
For a moment, there was nothing else. The heart kept singing. And then… a grin. Wider than Yuriko had ever seen on Ruki’s face. His gaze had turned inwards, yet his beaming radiated through the room, lighting it bright.
Ruki blinked, his smile settling down a little. "Now, we know. That's good. Then we can buy things for a girl." He laced his fingers with Yuriko’s, clenching her hand gentler this time. "The gender doesn't matter. But it's useful to know."
Yuriko tilted her head. “Yeah… the gender doesn’t matter.
But a girl. That was something. Yuriko decided then and there that she would not be like her mother. She would make sure that this girl would have attention and love as much as she would be able to give her.
The library bedroom was quiet. Yuriko stretched her arms and yawned, the familiar drowsiness sneaking into her muscles and mind.
“Did you put the photo in your purse?” Ruki adjusted his new, blue blazer Yuriko had gotten for him just a few days ago.
“Mhm… It’s right there… You can take it out.” She pulled off her cardigan. A nap would be perfect at the moment, but she could have a snack, too. Perhaps a bit of sleeping first and then eating… hmm…
“Look at her. She is perfect.”
Turning around, Yuriko blinked. There it was again: the grin. She inched closer, leaning in as Ruki held the ultrasound picture. A smile broke out of Yuriko. “Yes, our beautiful little girl.”
“We should frame this and put it in her room.” Ruki brushed Yuriko’s cheek.
Yuriko nodded. “Or in…” A yawn vibrated out of her. “...ours…”
Ruki put the photo on the table and glanced at Yuriko. “Sleepy again?”
The Kitsune was about to nod, but another yawn forced her mouth open. Hastily, she lifted her hand, covering her lips.
“Off to bed then.”
Before Yuriko had time to resist, Ruki had already collected her in his arms and carried her into their bed. He nested her in the middle of the large, angular pillow he had given her at Christmas and scooted closer, massaging her belly through the fabric of her dress.
“Close your eyes.” Just a whisper, but it didn’t even occur to Yuriko to object. Her lids slumped down while she shifted her neck to find perfect support from the pillow. “That’s my good girl~” Ruki’s words traveled into her mind, painting her face with heat.
As Yuriko was sinking into soft sluggishness, she felt how Ruki lay his cheek against her belly while his hand caressed the side of it. “And here is my other one. Such a good girl.”
“Nhh?” Yuriko opened her mouth but closed it right away.
“Shh, just sleep.” A mere whisper again. “That’s right. We let your mama sleep for now. You drained all her energy today, didn’t you?”
As tired as she was, Yuriko still reached her hand, entangling her fingers with Ruki’s hair. This time, she didn’t even try to speak, nor did she peek but simply stayed put and relaxed.
“Our little girl… You will be protected. I’ll make sure of it.” Ruki’s voice was a low murmur. “I will recite you any book you want to hear and teach you to read too. I did that with my brothers and I’m sure you will learn fast when the time is right. We can do puzzles together, visit any place you wish, and I’ll show you how to ride. You can even have your own horse…”
Yuriko drifted, the sound of Ruki’s voice turning more and more distant. But she couldn’t quite let go, for somehow the situation was way too adorable.
“You’ll be my little girl forever, my very own baby girl…” Ruki placed a kiss on Yuriko’s belly. “You and your mama will always be my precious treasures. I promise to protect and cherish you eternally.”
He is so happy… Perhaps… he wished… for a girl… Yuriko’s head slid to the side, and her cheek hit the pillow. It could be that Ruki said something more, but that was between him and the baby, for Yuriko heard his voice no more.
I made the pic for the fic with a CG (Ruki’s LE route), fake ultrasound picture, and edited a photo as a background.

Visiting the Zenko Realm
The Zenko Kitsune have their own realm from which they can enter the Human World through portals. But most of my Kitsune live in the Human World for various reasons. Yuriko's brother, Yuuto, and his wife, Nalia, have a house in the Zenko Realm, so Yuriko visits there occasionally. So does Himiko, who is married to Yuuto's best friend, Shinji. Himiko and Nalia are friends and so are Nalia and Yuriko. I like to think that at some point these three vixens will grow close as a group too. Maybe then they can have coffee and tea dates in the Zenko Realm and enjoy their time with each other. I associate each of these vixens with a flower. Sunflower for Himiko, sakura for Nalia, and lily for Yuriko. Nalia belongs to @nalia-tsukino, Himiko and Yuriko belong to me.
Character bases purchased from nukababe/Etsy. The background is from Ibis Paint.

Her Calamity Dark 03
Beta reader: @ruki-mukami-dl
Chapter Selection
It was nice to visit the library where the summer heat didn’t reach. Yuriko sat in a cozy corner, leafing through a novel while waiting for her acquaintance to arrive. There was something wafting in the air, like she had smelled Yuuto but somehow, she couldn’t imagine him visiting a library.
He said he reads horror books though… So maybe it could be possible? Yuriko glanced over her book. There was someone with ivory-shaded hair standing in front of a large bookshelf, staring at the books. But the man didn’t have any blue in his hair and his build was nothing like Yuuto’s. Besides, he had dressed in traditional clothing that made Yuriko instantly think about shrines.
So weird… a foreigner wearing such clothes. And yet, another white-haired person. Maybe I have just started to pay more attention to that than before. Yuriko didn’t have time to ponder more because another scent tickled her nose. It had become familiar, yet it kept intriguing her mind. Maybe it was a perfume from abroad.
Pressing the cover down, Yuriko put a smile on her face and waved her hand as Nalia roamed between the shelves, her red curls bouncing a little with every step and forest eyes beaming.
“Nalia, it’s nice to see you again.” Yuriko kept her voice down and patted the couch right next to her.
Nalia slipped on the seat, lifting her handbag on her lap. “Likewise. And this time… without such a rush.”
Yuriko nodded. The last time she had seen the woman had been when Komori Yui was kept in Yuma’s room as a prisoner. Yuriko had sneaked out and told Nalia who had promised to help. “I’m ever-so-grateful that you… umh… arranged things.”
“I have a hunch that it could have been arranged anyway… but still, I was happy to help. How are you? Everything going okay with Ruki?”
Silence. Yuriko didn’t know what to say.
Nalia frowned, taking Yuriko’s hand and squeezing it. “Whatever it is, you can tell me. And if I can do anything, I will. Promised.”
A sigh escaped Yuriko’s lips and her gaze slid onto her lap. “Everything… went well. We saved my brother from…” Yuriko lowered her voice even more. “...from the Demon World. He has his own place now… and I still live with Ruki. And I’m very happy with that.”
“It can be just me… but you don’t sound happy.” Nalia brushed the back of Yuriko’s hand with her thumb. It was surprisingly warm now that Yuriko had gotten used to Ruki’s cold touch.
Squirming a little, Yuriko glanced at Nalia. “I… I… Mom… She went for Yuuto. So, I thought we could save her too… but… but…”
The tears came before Yuriko could stop herself. She raised her free hand, wiping her cheeks while sniffling. Nalia said nothing but pulled the Kitsune woman into a tight embrace, stroking her back and patting her hair.
“She… she’s gone… and I couldn’t say goodbye…” Yuriko buried her face in Nalia’s shoulder, unable to hide her shaking.
If anything, Nalia pressed Yuriko even closer, holding her like she was a little girl once again. Holding her like she had hoped her mother to do. “It’s okay. Just cry it out…”
Even though Yuriko knew she was being a huge bother right now, she couldn’t hold back when she heard such gentle words. It hadn’t been very long ago she had met Nalia for the first time, so acting like this was rather rude and thoughtless but it seemed Nalia didn’t mind. And Yuriko gladly took the opportunity to have this moment.
Bit by bit the tears died. Nalia pushed Yuriko into a straighter position and wiped the rest of the rivulets from the Kitsune’s cheeks with her thumbs. “There you go…”
Nodding, Yuriko placed her hands on Nalia’s. “Thank you, Nalia. I… I… I don’t know what happened. So, there isn’t much to tell… but she was… executed and… Well… yeah…”
“I’m so sorry that it happened. Losing a mother is always… very tough.” Nalia averted her gaze for a moment but captured Yuriko’s right after. The forest-green pools radiated empathy as if Nalia had known how Yuriko felt right now. “But… you will survive it. You are a strong woman, and you have your loved ones. Let the sorrow come but also look forward to your future. You said that you got your brother back and you also have Ruki. I’m sure they both want to be there for you. And me too. I’m right here.”
“Yes… that’s true.” Yuriko nodded. “And thank you… such kindness.”
For a while, the women sat in silence. Yuriko let her thoughts wander. There was this squeeze around her heart, and it didn’t seem to let go of her. But there was something else too. Something warm and sparkling. She hadn’t only lost her mother but gained so many things that she hadn’t had before. Of course, no one could ever place the woman who had raised her, but Nalia was right. Yuriko wasn’t alone.
“You know… I should be more grateful for what I have…” Yuriko laid her gaze at Nalia. “So, thank you for supporting me. And helping me out before. You didn’t have to do that because we don’t really know each other that well.”
“As I said, I was happy to help. I have my reasons… to believe that… Well, you know, the world you live in isn’t always so easy. I don’t want anyone to get hurt.” Nalia’s gaze slipped somewhere past Yuriko who wondered what had happened to this woman before. But Nalia shook her head. “Silly me. It’s no use to think about the past. You said you got your brother back. Why don’t you tell me something about him?”
The question was surprising. Yuriko could understand Elizabeth’s curiosity since the girls had been friends for a while now. But while Nalia felt close, Yuriko had only met her a couple of times. She didn’t expect the woman to be interested in her life in a similar manner as her zombie friend.
Thinking about her friend reminded Yuriko that Shin had never texted her back. Did he even care what was going on with Elizabeth?
I should focus on Nalia now. She wanted to hear about Yuuto… Yuriko sighed and rumbled through her bag until she found her phone. “I’ll show you a photo Yuuto and I took together.”
With a few pats on the phone’s screen, Yuriko swiped a picture on the screen. Yuuto and she were in his new kitchen on the day he had moved into his apartment. “Look, we have similar hair, but Yuuto’s eyes are different from mine. Also, he is much taller than me… probably the same height as Ruki. He is a bit grumpy sometimes, but I think he has a good heart. Hmm… and it seems he likes video games and books, horror genre. Recently, I made him watch a Vampire movie with me, but he told me it was the wrong type of horror.” Yuriko shrugged and let out a giggle. She didn’t mind Yuuto’s comment, since her plan had simply been to make him think about the Vampires and perhaps get used to them being around.
Nalia leaned in, looking at the photo carefully. “He’s good-looking.”
“Mhm, I guess so.” Yuriko stared at the photo. She couldn’t really think about Yuuto like that, how he looked in the eyes of someone else. They had similar traits, and Yuriko didn’t feel like she was looking good. Average and a bit of cute perhaps. Though, Yuuto wasn’t cute. So, maybe he was handsome then.
“I…” Nalia placed her hand on Yuriko’s. “He probably needs friends since he just moved here.”
Yuriko nibbled her bottom lip. Nalia was probably right but it didn’t seem like Yuuto was interested in meeting anyone. He had mostly been focused on job searching, not making friends. And it was clear that he wouldn’t become friends with the Mukamis. One day he might stand them, but that was all. “I know… but when he isn’t searching for a job, he is playing his games. I don’t think he goes out much.”
“Maybe you could arrange a meeting for us…” Nalia stared directly into Yuriko’s eyes. “I would like to meet him.”
“Really?” Such an idea hadn’t even occurred to Yuriko.
“I haven’t been in Kaminashi City for long and don’t have many friends yet.” Nalia sighed, keeping her eyes on Yuriko who could easily relate to how tough it was to move in a new city. “Yuuto seems to have similar interests to me. So, maybe he and I could become friends.”
Yuriko flashed a smile. “You are such a nice person!” Nalia would make a great friend for Yuuto.
And then the reality hit Yuriko.
Nalia didn’t know what Yuriko was. What Yuuto was. She was familiar with the supernatural world, but Yuriko hadn’t revealed the whole truth about her background. If Nalia heard about it from Yuuto, it would look bad.
“Umh… before that…” Yuriko shifted slightly. “I… I need to tell you something… about us.”
“Yes?”
Yuriko tugged the hem of her dress and arranged her hair while she took a deep breath. Suddenly the library felt a bit cold. She had understood that Nalia found Vampires suspicious. So, it was possible that she wasn’t too fond of the Kitsune either. Would Yuriko lose a friend here?
“You know… I’m not…” Yuriko glanced around but wasn’t brave enough to look at Nalia. She noticed that the foreigner was still searching for a book in front of the same shelf as before. Noting the fact, Yuriko lowered her voice. “I… I’m not a… human.”
Nalia scooted closer, wrapping her arm around Yuriko’s shoulders. “Not?” Gentle fingers brushed Yuriko’s cheek, making her turn her head. “Then what are you? Not a Vampire. I can tell that much because of your body temperature.”
“Umh… a fox… I mean… a Kitsune, apparently a demonic fox from the Demon World…” Yuriko made sure she talked as quietly as possible, not wanting to draw attention to them. “Of course, Yuuto is like that too. Dad is a human though, so we are only half-demons… and I promise, we aren’t bad.”
Shivers ran through Yuriko, but Nalia only squeezed her closer. The forest-green eyes squinted as a smile spread on the redhead’s lips. “Don’t worry. I have already seen that you are a good person, Yuriko. I have the skill to see who is good and who is not… It works, most of the time at least.”
“So… umh… you don’t mind?” Yuriko swallowed.
Nalia shook her head and her curls started to dance again. “I don’t. Not at all. Now, tell me all there is to know about the Kitsune. I have only heard the legends but probably those are stories for the humans.” “I don’t know everything either… but I try to teach you enough. Maybe then Yuuto will feel comfortable around you.” Finally, Yuriko smiled. “He really needs a friend. So, I’m grateful you want to do this.”
After visiting the library, Yuriko roamed through the park with Yuma in silence. The huge Vampire seemed to be in a lousy mood, which had been the case ever since Ruki and Yuriko had come back from the Demon World. It was probably because of Eve, but Yuriko was hesitant to ask about it.
“Have ya been doin’ some diggin’ in the garden?” Yuma’s sudden question made Yuriko almost jump. She glanced at the tall Vampire, shaking her head. “Ya sure? Yer lookin’ suspiciously guilty right now.”
“I haven’t done anything. I have so much catching up to do that I’ve been focusing on school stuff.” Yuriko wrapped her arms around her. It wasn’t exactly the truth because mostly she had been studying the Founder book, she had taken from the school’s library… but she surely hadn’t been in Yuma’s garden.
“Maybe ya went there as a fox? And then forgot ‘bout it.”
Yuriko frowned. “I’d know if I had done that.”
“Tsk… odd…” Yuma marched forward, and Yuriko had a hard time keeping at his pace.
“Is something wrong with the garden?”
“Yeah… someone’s been diggin’ up the carrots and eaten ‘em…”
Yuriko tilted her head and hastened her steps. For her, the situation sounded quite obvious. Of course, she wasn’t an expert in gardening but in this case, the guilty person… or creature was rather easy to pinpoint. “I think… I think we might have a bunny in the garden.”
“Whatta hell?! Damn, yer right! I gotta catch that fuckin’ jerk and twist its nape!” Yuma flexed his fist.
“No! You can’t! Bunnies are cute!” Yuriko stopped and placed her hand on Yuma’s arm. “There… there must be another way…”
“Bunnies’re goddamn food, nothin’ more. I’m gonna hunt it down and bring it to the dinner table. Ruki can cook it for us.”
Blinking, Yuriko shook her head. The whole idea was terrible. If there was indeed an innocent bunny jumping around the garden, it should have been protected, not hunted. “We can’t eat it.”
“Hah?! Why not?” Yuma shoved Yuriko’s hand away. “Yer eatin’ meat every time it’s on the table. Don’t gimme any vegetarian shit since ya clearly ain’t one.”
“That’s not the point! It’s a cute animal, so… umh… We shouldn’t eat it.”
“Yer not makin’ any sense. Animals are for food like humans are for blood. I rather keep it simple.” Yuma started to walk again, and Yuriko had to hurry after him. But in her mind, she was already making rescue plans for this mystery bunny. Maybe she could track it down as a fox, snatch it, and carry it further into the woods so it wouldn’t cross its way with Yuma.
They didn’t talk more on their way back to the manor, and Yuriko had time to think how happy she was for Yuuto. Now, she only needed to make sure Yuuto would agree to meet Nalia. As Yuma and she left the city behind and started to roam along the wider street, that went through the woods, her steps turned lighter and lighter. Perhaps everything would be alright eventually. She had a family and friends now. Yes, she had lost a lot but from now on she would work to keep everyone around her.
“Oi! Do ya see that?” Yuma stopped and grabbed Yuriko’s arm, pointing to the forest with his other hand.
Yuriko turned her head in the direction Yuma was showing her and blinked. The white tiny fox in the front of the bushes tensed all over, squirting its amber-yellow eyes, before it jumped and dashed among the trees.
“Freakin’ fox had two tails! I bet that’s the bastard that has been messin’ with my garden!” Yuma raised his fist. “Stay away, did ya hear me?!” “Oh my gosh, Yuma! You can’t just yell at it. That’s an innocent animal…” But Yuriko’s voice was turning into mumbles. What natural fox had white fur and two tails with red tips? It had been a Kitsune for sure. Were their relatives coming after Yuuto and her? Or was this just a coincidence?
