Hi! I was wondering if you would be okay discussing how you approached your research on The Tale of the Peach Blossom Prince? I've been doing some research for a fic and there are some topics where I keep running into vague references to certain things (like the institution of slavery) with no real explanation of how that worked and the citations are all for Japanese language texts.

Hi, hello!!

So, it should be noted first and foremost that my irl career involves qualitative research, and how I approach research comes a lot from that background. Lots of the things I found through my research was through an academic search engine hosted by my U's library. That being said: the best way to approach any research is to start with broad strokes, and then single out problems/questions to examine more deeply.

In the case of Tale, I started with a mixture of encyclopedias of Heian Japan, and my own existing knowledge. From there, I could then focus on the minutiae, things like how the government of the country functioned, if it had codified law, and how that influenced other bits and bobs - because you're right! There's lots of small references which don't have explanations. That's the body of the research, particularly for something like a cultural touchstone in an historical period. If you do manage to get your hands on academic papers on your subject, check the footnotes! There are links sometimes, but more reliably, they have authors and titles, and you can hunt through those primary sources to see if they have more information for you.

If I couldn't find an academic source on something I didn't understand, I'd go and peruse public data bases (google scholar isn't bad for this, and, bizarrely, tourism agencies/guides) and try to find an explanation which was consistent across multiple sources. Good ways to search for this sort of thing is through the key phrases of what you're looking for. In the case of what you mentioned, searching for "slavery in Japan" is a good keyword approach. It'll net the most results, and if you're using a data bank, you can add more filters, such as time period, class relations, etc., to narrow your results. This is a lot harder on public search engines. But the point is to start from a broad "N" (lots of sources and shallow depth of information) and move to narrow "n" (few sources, highly dependent on subject, with a deep depth of specific information and nothing else) sources for details. You technically never have to leave a N based approach, and just gloss over fiber detail.

Tragically, one of the biggest limitations I ran into with Tale was that most the good, primary, sources, are in Japanese and haven't been translated into English. I had an instance in Tale where I genuinely couldn't find something, BC the information didn't exist in English (the fucking. Colour. BDNFJDNDMD.) Barring learning Japanese, an incredibly difficult language, I recommend gravitating toward anything written by, or with, Japanese authors, just going off of surnames or given names! This is a very common issue in all humanities research in regards to East Asian content: we don't have a lot of great information in English. Tragically, I can't offer a solution, and can only gripe abt the Eurocentrism.

more phagenda theories ft. analysis of dan's story bc i am painfully unemployed

hi besties it's me again. i'm reaching the point of waiting for the announcement where it's like that tweet about the plate of corn in encanto. i decided to go back and watch dan and phil's first videos to see what frames they used to see if it would reveal anything intersting and well... it kinda does, but also this theory falls apart a bit towards the end so. take this with a grain of salt this is just for fun i'm just yapping it's not meant to be that serious etc etc

so starting with phil's video blog, i believe the frame is from about 0:41 or at least very very close to there (based on the position of phil's paper):

this section of the video is when phil is reading off a question from his linguistics exam. we know from "teaching dan to speak" that if youtube hadn't worked out and phil actually used his degree, he was gonna be a forensic linguist. okay so now, what frame is used from hello internet? this one isn't quite as easy to pin down but my best approximation is at 0:37, or at least somewhere soon after that (going off of dan's placement in front of the door):

this is the section of the video immediately after dan gets done saying some "really good friends" he's made recently persuaded him to "give it [making videos] a shot" which like, we all know means phil. when i say immediately i mean he finishes saying that at 0:36

i just personally find this intersting because like. for phil's video why pick a frame of him reading an exam when you could've gone with the thumbnail or him looking at the camera or something? with dan, i at first thought it was the very beginning of hello internet, but it's definitely not based on the way he comes into frame. instead it's right after he says that phil persuaded him to make videos... so this brings me to the ripple effect/alternate universe idea a lot of people have been throwing around. what if they chose phil reading his linguistics exam bc they are going to explore a universe where he becomes a forensic linguist? and of course, if he didn't do that, then dan wouldn't have made his video, because the part where phil persuades him to give it a shot never happened (this is where we get into dinok territory). ok so how does this fit with the other two shots we can see? (i'm not including something we want to tell you bc it would be impossible to know exactly where in the video that shot is from, and ofc i can't include the mystery one 💔)

how does this fit in with the alternate universe/choices theory? well, this particular moment is right when dan is asking phil "top or bottom," which obviously in the moment is a joke and it's a really inconsequential question. however, it is a question nonetheless, with two possible outcomes 👀

for saying goodbye forever... i quite literally have nothing, the shot they chose has nothing going on it's just them standing there as priest sean walks in at about 0:35 💀💀

anyway yeah, assuming they consciously chose what shots of videos to include, it might give more validity to the multiverse idea, regardless of what medium they present it in! ofc this could also all mean nothing and i am just grasping at straws (10x more likely) i just thought it was intersting :)

SO! It takes a LOT of work for Charles to say he loves something or someone (projecting.) it's a very big word for him, moreso than it is for Beatrice, so he uses it carefully. he would say (honestly) that he loves/loved his parents, and he would admit only to Beatrice that he loves her. And after a certain point, he would declare his love for science. what I've been thinking about mostly though is that. Charles has never and could never love Aster. Ever. He might THINK he could, he might think he DOES at some points even (early in their friendship before shit REALLY hit the fan, or anytime after he starts believing Aster is divine) but he DOESN'T and CANNOT. BECAUSE!! He's too obsessed with the IDEA of her. The very CONCEPT that someone like her can even EXIST boggles his brain and gets him giddy with wonder. He's too blinded by that obsession and fascination that he could never truly see Aster as the person she is, therefore could never love her for the person she is. That's why he was able to operate on Aster with no anesthesia but couldn't do the same for Beatrice; he could (somewhat subconsciously) disconnect Aster's screams and cries and just hear them as byproducts of the procedure. But he couldn't do that with Beatrice, because he actually bothers to not only know, but LOVE her as a person, and hates seeing her unhappy (which is a problem because Beatrice constantly lies about her happiness).

He and Beatrice love each other in,, ways????? Beatrice throws around "I love yous" not without care, but rather often. Charles only says it when he thinks Beatrice needs it (and of course Beatrice is awful at expressing her needs, so. Y'know.) Charles more often expresses it via actions; getting a bucket of warm water for Beatrice without her asking for her to rest her feet in (arthritis babey!), or the ONE TIME he played piano in front of her, both of them knowing Beatrice is listening (then theres that second time that happens a month before the ovening but SHHH SHHSHSHHSHS), or getting her tea whenever he makes himself a cup. Stuff like that. Which is a valid way to love someone! But it's hard for Beatrice because she has the brand of self hate (everyone in escapism has their own Special Kind of self hate btw just to be clear) that needs A LOT of reassurance, and again, she would almost never outright ask for that reassurance herself. The most she'd do is say "I love you" and silently wait for him to say it back. And when he's p sure it's clear that's what Beatrice wants, OF COURSE he'll say it back! He loves Beatrice like crazy!!! They love each other so much it's awful!!! Doomed!! They're so fucking doomed Jesus Christ!! These two motherfuckers would go to the ends of the earth for each other but Beatrice doesn't want to communicate and Charles gets so swept up in his passions he doesnt realize when Beatrice's mental state crumples unless she tells him herself!! Good god I'm projecting a lot!! I think that's all I have to say for now I am so sorry holy fuck I don't know if any of that makes sense!! Was any of that relevant to like??? personally i am just here for the chaos. i will absolutely be seated for the downfall of red bull and i think max to mercedes is such a fun change up that’ll be SURE to create lots of drama and excitement on and off the track. i mean just imagine him and george as teammates. i am also super interested to see how the dynamic between toto and max would be.

hmm i see lots of people seeming so sure about N dating Jake, and maybe this is my big ass bias against such huge age gaps in any relationships, but has anyone considered that he could also just be one of her aforementioned gay friends? she has repeatedly said she has a lot of gay friends (i too am in a queer friend group and totally see that for her) and she clearly has lots of personal ties to the queer community, from derry girls to her pop culture interests to her charitable work. i just think it’s a bit heteronormative to automatically assume jake and N are dating just bc he wore her tshirt (since yes, to most ppl that’s a questionable move for straight friends of the opposite sex, but not for the girls and the gays!).

like not to speculate about someone’s sexuality here, but there IS such a thing as gay culture, and i just personally do get queer vibes from jake’s IG, especially his IG stories and his tagged posts and his close friends who are queer (birds of a feather thing, in my own experience) and the fact he played a queer character on tv as well. ofc i’ll admit it’s a little reductive to be like “straight men simply can’t like beyonce, lana del rey, lorde, harry styles, refer to themselves as a twink, post a pic of them doing a splits on an escalator to ‘f*ck him all night’ by azaelia banks, etc” bc they ofc CAN, but, to me that just screams gay culture lol. but that is just my own reading of the vibes and my own personal opinion and i could obv be totally wrong bc at the end of the day we’re all on here speculating about people we don’t know IRL and u could just ignore me.

I've been writing poems and music for years now but i find writing actual coherent storys with characters and dialogue so so hard.

and i feel that so much!! we are twinsss, i also started out writing poems and music and then realized i had stories i wanted to tell that wouldn't fit in shorter form, then discovered fanfic in middle school in the early '10s and it was all downhill from there LOL. truly such a golden era tho oh my god. growing up reading the hat fic and borderline illegible wattpad stories was certainly... formative!

yapping ahead vv (i don't have much advice bc i'm still just learning as i go but hopefully some stuff i picked up on can be a bit helpful!)

i have zero method to the madness when writing so it's a relief to know it doesn't come off that way LOL but i do have a few little things that i follow and i always look for them when beta–ing as well! they're pretty small technical things and they're generally up to personal preference, but some of them come from authors i admire and i think they can really take anyone's writing up a notch <3

i don't feel qualified to give advice because i'm just raw–dogging everything lmao i've never taken classes or anything, so take all this yapping with a grain of salt bc it's just what's worked for me!

– i try to use descriptors like "the man" or "the blond" or "his friend" etc sparingly. i wish i could remember the source, but i read a great piece about why it's better to just go with the character's name 99% of the time, and then i went through so many of my works to edit them and i felt so much more confident in my writing afterwards– it made a big difference in readability (imo).

ofc there are exceptions, like if the name of a character is unknown, or if there are too many names being thrown around in one sentence and a "the man" or "the soldier" etc just sits nicer. i definitely still use them occasionally! but it does sometimes put some distance between the reader and the story when those descriptors are used too often instead of names, so it's a good thing to keep an eye out for when it comes to flow. sometimes less or more or whateva ??

– sorta on the topic of less is more, i love challenging myself to show vs tell when i can! whether it's by keeping dialogue short and letting actions speak instead (can add to intimacy/realism– we communicate so much through body language yk), through metaphors (literally how my whole '#john egan is dog coded' fic was born LOL), or describing feelings rather than spelling them out (his heart ached vs he was sad, his pulse raced vs he was scared, you get the gist). you said you've been writing poems so i feel like stuff like that would already probably come easily to you tho! <3

– this guide on ao3 is great for smut writers! whether someone's a beginner or just looking for ways to elevate the filth, i found it really helpful, it's a fun read as well lol. it calls out stereotypes/cliches and teaches you how to reword them, gives lists of slang and reactionary words, do's and don't's, etc. i don't follow everything in it but that's the beauty of writing; we all have things that work for us and things that don't and that's so okay. :-)

– in the same way that artists use references to practice and find their style, you can do that with writing too! i know a lot of writers have a doc or note where they jot down stylistic things they find while reading that they'd like to emanate, or words they want to use, specific phrases, descriptors, etc. if i'm reading a fic and find an auditory descriptor i like, i might take note of it, stuff like that. sorta like a text document version of a pinterest board!

– thesaurus.com is my best friend truly. often going with the 'simplest' version of a word makes for smoothest reading so someone isn't taken out of the story being like wtf does that word mean lol but sometimes things can feel repetitive, or like there just needs to be a little bit more spice; i probs go back and forth btwn my doc and thesaurus a dozen times an hour tbh.

that's all i can think of rn and ik those are pretty basic so i'm sorry about that!! i really do just kinda write what evokes emotions in myself, and then i hit post and hope it translates over to whoever is reading too :') drawing from your own experiences if you can/really sitting with what the characters would be feeling in whatever scenario you're writing is probably the most powerful way to present what you see in your mind.

i have a hard time writing about emotions/things i haven't personally experienced, so i usually stray away from it out of fear of not getting across what i want to, but some people are great at winging it and putting themselves in unfamiliar shoes so!! it's again just personal preference really.

and alsooo be kind to yourself! i'm an anxious wreck every time i post any of my writing, i am very much not confident when posting new fics and i agonize over my docs so much and trash a lot of works, but i know at the end of the day i can't grow or learn if i don't get the words down, and i can't get feedback or gain confidence if i don't post. becoming your own hype man and giving yourself the opportunity to improve is essential <33

there's something so charming about hunter, but in a soothing way

it doesnt mean she cant be silly ofc, but her eyes reflect so much of her moods and personality

when she's with the eagle she looks calm and gentle and much of the expressions she makes are towards the eagle; when nimue gets the bird, when the godslayer stuns the eagle and got one of the flaps and at the end of the game when he corrupts the eagle completely there were always a close at her face to show us how worried hunter was towards her friend

it's as if the eagle highlights hunter in some way, cause if you think about it hunter is not really an important person; she's an outsider and a stranger, and eagle mother is there not only to push her forwards, but she also works like this excuse to develop what lies inside hunter - her feelings

the more i think about, like no human(oid) character in the pathless have a mouth, which is an interesting decision - may it be because the animator said "nuh uh i aint doing this" or because they had other intentions - having no mouth makes it harder to humanize a character cause to do so you work around facial expression mostly

for characters like the diver or the little guy from journey it works cause humanizing them is not the focus - they are vessels for the player to experience the message of the game, much like a blank page, but hunter is a more defined type of character, she's not only for the player to control; there are instance where she speaks for herself (literally), she reacts towards her environment (like when she groans when she hits the ground), it's a bit of "i exist in relation to others" kind of thing i dont even know if this explanations make sense

the thing is, if you gonna hide the mouth (and it's funny cause they got rid of the mouths but not of the speech), to deliver something believable you have to put extra attention in other places, like eyes (which is probably the reason why they made her eyes big, for emphasis) and corporal expression (i love all of hunter animations like ALL of them, the idles are so cool and my favorite has to be the climbing one HAVE YOU SEEN THAT CREATURE)

another aspect that locks my eyes on hunter is her color palette; she feels a bit like 60% red and 40% black which an almost dangerous distribution cause it gets near the boring looking too evenly palette, but i feel like this problem is partially solved by the color choice cause black and red is very iconic (but i see that this can be subjective, so take it with a grain of salt)

to give some examples: im typing from an nitro acer (black red palette), you can see cars with that bright red (+black of the tires), and i can name a few characters with red+black combination, like matoi ryuko from kill la kill, kaguya, that masochist from that cassino games school (she's iconic i will recognize but i wont lose my time googling it i dont wanna know details about that anime)

(also if i had to point a match for hunter from another media....... kikyo my beloved i fucking love you my gay awakening i kept watching inuyasha cause i wanted to see you on my screen omg)

but at the same time her color scheme puzzles me: what does it mean? usually color is used for storytelling or readability purposes

hunter red black contrasts very well against the greens/whites/oranges of the landscape, mostly bc it's highly saturated; but then you get to the boss fight and......

i know that the boss fights dont take as many screen time as exploration but considering that they are the action moment hmm idk the math aint mathing here

well what's about storytelling? a bit of the same problem shown on the above image; hunter shares the color scheme with the corrupted tall ones and godslayer which makes things even more confusing

(seriously am i stupid and didnt see the obvious hint everyone else saw and im just here staring at the walls idk)

that said i have come up with my own worms to explain this and it comes down to: it's not from the land/natural

godslayer and the corrupted tall ones shouldnt exist, they are not natural to this world and actually an evil twist of the reality; hunter not necessarily is corrupted, but is also not natural (from the island), she's an outsider, it's about this feeling of not-belonging

however in the end of the day the color choice is also about readability and keeping things cohesive; stretching the color palette of the entire game just to give hunter a different look would do more damage than helping, imagine changing to something not that far like a pink or yellow, things still would change drastically

in the end i still love hunter very much ma babegurl <3 sillly stupid<333 my dear blorbo<333 hope she finds a lot of hobbies <33333

Okay, can we talk about how Heaven in Good Omens is like specifically Catholicism? (Not in the obvious way)

I may be reaching bc I am *not* a Christian and only know basic facts/information about Catholicism, so take this with a grain of salt.

First of all, Heaven is ridiculously structured with only one angel really being able to "talk to God"(the Megatron) the closest way, while others are supposed to have some level of communication with Her, and they have less and less as the ranks get lower and lower.

Which is similar to structures like the Pope, Cardinals, Bishops, ect.

The Pope can "talk to God directly", and we have to trust that he's not lying about His/Her word, which us fucking EXACTLY like with the Megatron and other Archangels. But, since we're the "normal" people, we don't know if he's fucking lying or not, WHICH IS WHY EXACTLY LIKE WITH THE FUCKING MEGATRON

Not only that, but I'm pretty sure Catholicism is one of the, if not the, strictest denomination of Christianity as a whole (other than the Amish), and the most complicated (from the viewpoint of someone who isn't Christian). Devout Catholics are also known for being the assholes of assholes of Christianity (not that there aren't good ones, like how Christians as a general group aren't a hate group, just a section of very loud ones are assholes).

But because they're so strict, they can ostracize people who start asking questions or "doubting the word of God"

Ofc, that's a normal thing in Christianity as a whole, but it's still a point that can be made about how just a few questions can have you shunned from a church. And the toxicity of churches specifically in Catholicism.

(Again, not all Christians/Churches/Catholics)

Not to mention how Leaders of Church (specifically toxic priests) tend to have ulterior motives with how they lead to push one viewpoint/outcome (similarly to how the Archangels pushed and pushed to get a war with Hell instead of just trying to stop the Anti-Christ because they didn't want peace, they were resentful and bloodthirsty)

Could these connections just be because Good Omens is based on Christianity as a whole and not just based on the potentially toxic environment of churches/structure of faith that may or may not be specifically Catholic? Sure, of course. I'm not Neil Gaimen. I have no real clue about what goes on in his brain

But I like the idea that Heaven, in all its toxicity and hunger for power, follows the power hungry standard of Christianity (again, not all Churches/Christians)

And I haven't seen this hc and I would love to hear other people's thoughts on the topic :>

I bet Narancia spent days trying to figure out how to photograph Aerosmith when he first got it so he could show Jotaro. Maybe this is what started Narancia's stories about the man since Wait You Know Other Stand Users? Unfortunately his attempts were unsuccessful and Narancia had to settle with a drawing which...... didn't turn out super great but it got his point across and Jotaro absolutely has it hung up in his office

and BIG yes to Jotaro visiting Italy before the insanity of Part 5. Maybe he visits a few months before everything goes down so he's able to meet everyone except Giorno. meeting Jotaro in person was...... a definitely shock. When Narancia said Jotaro was Tall And Muscular they'd expected him to be that but by Narancia's standards. Plus, he'd mentioned several times he'd been 10~ so it stood to reason that description was based on how he'd been much smaller at the time. But nope, Jotaro's built like a truck and HUGE

and ofc, as you mentioned there's the absolute insanity that comes when the Gang realise "wait every single thing Narancia has said about this man is correct, wait-" Maybe Narancia even manages to wheedle Jotaro into showing off some of his scars as Evidence, which leads to some more stories which even Narancia hadn't heard yet and frankly paint a somewhat terrifying picture of exactly how strong Jotaro is

However, despite everything, Narancia would probably be very carful to hide the fact he was working in the mafia. Was he successful? Who knows. Jotaro definitely suspects there's something up, but Narancia is happy. Even through the letters Jotaro could tell Narancia was so much happier with the Bucci Gang than he'd ever been with his neglectful father, so he decides to let it slide

and things are going to get INSANE with the other two au merges. Joot in Italy is going to be a time, and you bet the second Jotaro walks into Libecco's he and Narancia do the Spider Man Meme because Wait A Fucking Moment-. Jotaro has half a mind to lecture Nara, but he's honestly in no position to do such a thing without the kid calling him a hypocrite. He and Narancia are going to make a surprising great team, with the latter also being sooooo smug about Jotaro proving all his stories right when he showcases his power

but then there's also the crushing terror when Jotaro nearly dies to the Boss. Because this isn't just a teammate, this is his dad/older brother who he's watching die before he eyes. He's forced to watch Jotaro's signal on Aerosmith's radar slowly fade away to nothing and he's helpless to do anything about it

This time, Narancia is one of the first people on the boat. The Boss nearly killed the one person who was there for him through everything. Who'd saved his life from Stands before he even knew what they were, who supported him when he decided to be a 'he,' who's letters made every day alone and in juvie so much more bearable

he's not running away again. Not this time

but THEN in Honor Among Assassins Narancia is going to be in p a i n. When they finally figure out there's another guy in the Squadra and he realises it's Jotaro he's going to be so conflicted. On one hand, he needs to do what the Boss orders, but on the other this is JOTARO

this emotional turmoil is only going to be even worse when he ends up figuring out why exactly Jotaro's sided with the the Squadra and that the Boss apparently killed Uncle Polnareff, which really sucks

The Israeli Empire

I am not sure if it is the right time to introduce you to ancient Israel yet, but I prefer to do it asap because high amount of the content I make of Daniel is from ancient Israel.

before I continue, please remember that the term "ancient Israel" is an umbrella term for few eras that I will elaborate on.

in this piece you are seeing Empire of Israel, and the king was Omri, which surprisingly isn't one of the eras I like to talk about much. not because I don't like this era or anything, only because my favorite era for Daniel is Kingdom Of Hashmonai, which I can sit and ramble on and on about.

in the empire era, Daniel was 15. in the Hashmonai era, Daniel was 18. so chronically, I think introducing ancient Israel would make sense starting here, the earliest I have content on. (tho I do have even earlier years of Daniel, but that includes his parents, which I would like to introduce later.

so, this is a post about the empire now, please enjoy this half assed text I wrote to my friends about him, hope you like it lmao

The Crybaby Empire

This empire has no specific time frame, but I’ll go with what I got now ; 1021 bc - 922 bc,

The empire ended in a huge civil war between all the tribes (more like Judea and Benjamin vs everyone else) and that’s how the empire kinda died, but later the second Israeli kingdom was a great empire as well, and some researchers even say that the empire never actually fell, until the rise of Judea, which is that’s why I tend to disagree with the dates above, but until any further knowledge I’ll use those.

If the theory of second and first Israeli empires being one big continuous empire, which btw I kinda agree with, I’ll go with what’s currently considered as canon. I’ll go with Israel being an empire, fall, and become an empire once again without Judea. So this is the kingdom with.

Daniel in his age 15 was pretty bad teenager and annoying. He wanted everyone to do whatever he does. He wanted his neighbors, Sidon, Edom (his twin) Moab and Amon, as well as bashan and Amalek to practice in his religion, which wasn’t called Judaism at that time, it was called Israelism. Daniel took over their places and israelized them, first by, you know… cutting their pps. Then forcing them to not touch any pigs (kosherizing their asses), maybe even forcing them to pay 10% of their income to the holy temple, and not work on Shabbat.

Maybe , just maybe, the israelism is what made all of the nations around have a very similar gods. Remember, israelism wasn’t a monotheistic religion at this point, it was yet polytheistic, with Elohim, the Jewish god nowadays, being the main god in the Israeli pantheon.

The era in history is called “the Israeli era” which is the ofc, era where all cities around were Israeli.

A lot of information about this empire is either missing or contradicting so take it with a grain of salt, but countries around did mentioned king Omri and his Empire, as well as his deeds as I mentioned.

marionetta: first impressions

as you can tell, i veryy much love marionetta so far and i am super excited to see where the story will go in terms of conflict + character development! so below, i will be theorizing about the connections between anthonn and the ah’kon people, as well as julia’s overarching role in the story. please bear with me bc this'll be pretty rambly ^^;; and because everything is subject to being proven horribly wrong by canon, please also take everything with a grain of salt!

edit (1/4/23): ok so apparently the Hot Guy isn’t anthonn. unless....he’s just lying and he actually IS anthonn.........../hj

jokes aside i have no idea whether this entire post was immediately proven wrong by ep. 4 or not so. i’ll just leave this here in the very slim chance that my crack theory is right...or, if anthonn’s identity is finally revealed and i am proven horribly, horribly wrong, i’ll still leave this up but make another edit.

in either case—happy reading! i am truly excited to see where this story’s mystery will take us ✨

1. anthonn & the ah’kon people

firstly, with all the emphasis the narrative places on the ah'kon people within just the first 2 episodes, i think it’s clear that—with the whole three eyes thing, and the fact that they look pretty similar—anthonn is related to them in some way. maybe they’re kin, or maybe they only have a shared identity. either way, they are connected.

another interesting thing to note is the way that kalgratti citizens speak about the ah’kon:

a) episode 1 ➜ the scene on the bus

b) episode 2 ➜ julia’s conversation w/ her father

J: “No way am I sitting there! Can’t you see who’s sitting next to it?!”

K: “Oh, right. That man is one of those Ah’kon people. Do you think it’s true that under that badge they have...?”

J: ...“Stay behind me. It’s dangerous letting this guy travel with normal people...Don’t make eye contact with him, Kamille.”

Afterwards, the people on the bus excitedly talk about going to the circus.

J: ..."But the new uniform orders just came in! The rest of us will have to do twice as much work! You're all just slackers!”

c) episode 3 ➜ the scene after julia wakes up from the dead

F: “We have to return some Three Eyes to the Aspett Research Center.”

J: “Yes, I saw one on the bus yesterday. Why are they letting them walk around like that?”

F: “I don’t know, but don’t even think about talking to them...They’re superstitious people.”

After this, Julia tells him that she went to the circus last night.

F: “To the circus? What for? Only slackers go there!”

these three scenes give away a LOT of information:

J: “Yes, that’s it! Are you trying to drive me crazy?! I’ll report you all!”

D: “Hey...”

J: “You use cheap tricks to poison the minds of Kalgratti citizens! You’re a bunch of—” [censored by the speech bubble]

D: “Calm down, young lady...”

julia, as a character, is very restrained in that she is pretty conservative with her lifestyle and perspective of the world (ofc i don’t mean “conservative” in the political way, i just mean that she’s more traditional compared to someone like kamille, who is naturally free-spirited and inclined to adventure). this is mostly seen in episode 1, where she acts grumpy all throughout the trip to the circus, and consistently wishes that she was anywhere but there. she also doesn’t hesitate to say “i’ll report you!” whenever she gets angry at other people (namely, the circus troupe).

this characterization makes a lot of sense when we consider that julia’s father seems to be a decently ranked official in the village. he looks like he may work for the law enforcement, given his uniform and how he says, “we have to return some three eyes.”

the fact that the three eyes, or ah’kon people, are regularly sent to research centers signals that not everything is as innocent as it seems. it’s almost as if kalgratti citizens generally accept that ah’kon people are all “crazy” subjects that need to be studied by researchers. this dehumanization is similar to what we saw in hooky, though it seems to be more covert; not as outwardly violent as burning someone at the stake, and yet just as harmful. this silent persecution may be one of the driving conflicts of the story.

2. julia’s identity & narrative role?

from the scenes outlined above, i believe it is also pretty obvious that julia parrots a lot of the rhetoric that her father says. from thinking that the circus is just for slackers to wholeheartedly believing that the ah’kon people are freaks, she doesn’t seem to have an identity for herself. even her steadfast work ethic and “stick-in-the-mud” attitude is largely due to her upbringing. this means that the way julia perceives the world is very much molded by her father; she believes she leads a respectable, normal life, while in actuality she lives according to convention and doesn’t question societal norms.

and here is where the circus comes into the picture.

everything that she has ever known is suddenly turned upside down by the contract that she hastily signs (and doesn’t even bother to read the fine print of). anthonn’s wandering troupe presumably gives the unfairly deceased a second chance of living, at the cost of shedding their former identities, so when julia is simultaneously killed by the circus that is so very diametrically opposed to who she is at that moment, it’s ironic! because she’s also given a second chance through the circus—only that, rather than shedding her former identity, she must pay her dues through murder.

regardless, it seems that when she does commit the murder months later, her former identity is already long gone.

and there is certainly a lot to unpack here about her chosen (or assigned?) circus costume.

as preface: miriam bonastre tur is an artist from spain, so i think it is reasonable to assume that she’ll be incorporating spanish and/or latin american cultural influences into marionetta. therefore...

julia’s mushroom hat & makeup: mushrooms in spanish and latin american folktales have strong connections to spirituality and are highly respected in traditional shamanic culture. this is super interesting when we consider the context of the circus in marionetta...

“Shamanism is a system of religious practice. Historically, it is often associated with Indigenous and tribal societies, and involves belief that shamans, with a connection to the otherworld, have the power to heal the sick, communicate with spirits, and escort souls of the dead to the afterlife.”

julia’s mismatched tights: they may be a visual representation of going against what is perceived as “normal,” and breaking free from strict conventions. perhaps by being in the circus, julia will gradually unlearn her own subconscious prejudices. this ideological change would then set up conflict with her father later on in the story.

julia’s braids: instead of wearing her hair in only one braid, like what was seen at the beginning of the story, she now wears her hair in two braids. this parting of her single, unified braid visually parallels a fork in the road; in turn, this may imply that she will come to make a crucial decision (i.e., to kill or not to kill anthonn). maybe she won’t choose either of the paths laid out for her. maybe she’ll create a new path for herself...and maybe that'll involve her trying to escape the contract.

3. miscellaneous wonderings

is there narrative significance to having julia (& everything she represents, especially in relation to the ah'kon people) “kill” anthonn?

in a society where ah'kon people face covert persecution, was founding the circus troupe anthonn’s way of surviving?

who wrote the contract? who “chose” julia to kill anthonn? alternatively, are there more people in the circus tasked to kill him?

Ahhh look, it feels a bit funny since I kinda made my peace with the whole album thing. As long as he's happy with his decisions at the end of the day there's that. I've been thinking about how we can't always know everything that goes on behing the doors right? Idk if you've seen bang pd's interview a few days ago, he mentioned how, at the begining of the year jk wasn't even sure he wanted to release an album (and if I remember he even told us himself in a live that he's not sure about his plans but he'll just follow his intuition) Maybe he thought we would be disappointed if he didn't. Now if you think about it, this second chapter for bts feels sooo rushed in a way and we know why, but you know... I'm trying to imagine that things wouldn't have been so chaotic if it wasn't for m.s. and everything, they would've had way more time for this. But there's really no point.

BUT AGAIN, we all know how jk specifically mentioned in so many interviews over the past few years that he's working on his mixtape (Stay was supposed to be in his mixtape, so was Your eyes tell) and I BET there were some other masterpieces there and it really got me thinking why would he change his mind all of a sudden. Maybe pressure, maybe he didn't think they were good enough and wasn't that confident. We'll never know I guess.

I support him though, he's working hard and who knows, there might be songs in there that I'll like. Still, I cannot lie and say I don't feel a little sad that we're never going to hear some song that HE made (as imperfect as he probably thought they are). This isn't me (or some fans) damanding something, just that little feeling of "what could've been if.." . To me, the songs written/ produced by them weight wayyy more than any other songs out there. Oh well 😬 there's always a next time.
