After Märchen Chapter 1

Hello, everyone!

A new series by Tajima Ikuno, After Märchen, began publishing on the website Matogrosso a couple of months ago. We’re happy to finally bring the first chapter to you!

The story begins with a pair of brothers - Jacob and Wilhelm - who work as garbage collectors in a fairy tale land. Their job is to retrieve magical artifacts that have since served their purpose - or, to be blunt, worthless junk.

Fairytales in manga and anime

After Meruhen/ After Märchen. This ongoing manga by Tajima Ikuno depicts Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm as members of an organization of "collectors" within the fairytale world. Their job is to "collect" un-needed or unwanted items once a fairytale has ended - and by performing this simple job the story explores the other side and the implications hidden beyond the "happily ever after". Sometimes heartwarming... but usually dark, if not horrifying.

What happens after 'happily ever after'?

There is a joke about Revolutionary Road movie starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio that says if the Titanic had not sunk Jack and Rose would have been like this.

After märchen manga by Ikuno Tajima reminds me of this joke. Fairy tales are amusing to hear every time, but what if we arrive after the story is over? What if we see Snow White 15 years later when she is no longer the most beautiful woman in the world? What if Rapunzel is a queen with two children and misses her witch foster mother? What if we saw Cinderella living with the prince and his weird fetish? What happened to the king after the whole city shouted that he was naked? What will happen if Briar Rose wakes up and sees that another girl has replaced her for the past 100 years?

The manga follows the story of two brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, who collect the remains after happily ever after. They live in a world where all the characters are part of a fairy tale and they have to play their roles regardless of whether they want or not, otherwise the devil gets angry and even takes action to punish the wrongdoers himself. Satan is depicted in the form of the famous black goat. The only thing that can break the spell is true love. The story gets unexpectedly and surprisingly dark sometimes.

The past of the main characters and their childhood is mysterious. We know that from a very young age, the older brother, Jacob, has been responsible for the younger brother, Wilhelm, and he is respected and trusted by the higher ups and customers. The little brother is inexperienced and dependent on him, and with each new case he develops new experiences and learns to stand on his own feet and become independent and self-sufficient. But he doesn't know what the price is for him to reach adulthood.

The manga seems to have 12 chapters and 8.2 chapters are available so far. And we are going to see if Jacob and Wilhelm's love is so deep that it can free them from the laws of the world they are condemned to live in.
