We Have Always Lived in the Castle, by Shirley Jackson
We Have Always Lived in the Castle is 1962 mystery novel by author Shirley Jackson, who also famously wrote The Lottery (1948) and The Haunting of Hill House (1959). The story is about the Blackwoods, a very wealthy family who owns a large state. Since the death of their parents, Constance Blackwood has been taking care of her younger sister, Mary Katherine (better known as Merricat) and their wheelchair bound uncle, Julian. The three of them live in perfect recluse in their manor, but when cousin Charles comes to visit, he shakes up the family dynamic.
Despite their relationship not being explicitly incestuous in the novel, Constance and Merricat share a bond closer than most sisters do. If you have read Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, you may remember Eleanor and Theo, who weren't explicitly in a romantic relationship, but were very lesbian coded. The same applies for the Blackwood sisters, in my opinion.
In 1966 the novel was made into a play by Hugh Wheeler, and this play was used as the basis for the 2010 musical by Adam Bock and Todd Almond. But, more famously, in 2018, there was a movie adaptation by Stacie Passon, starring Taissa Farmiga as Merricat, Alexandra Daddario as Constance, Sebastian Stan as Charles and Crispin Glover as Julian.
The book is narrated by eighteen-years-old Merricat Blackwood. Despite her age, her behaviour throughout the novel is very immature and childish, probably due to the trauma she suffered at twelve, when the rest of her family (save for her sister and uncle) died. She's also very superstitious and practices sympathetic magic.
Merricat lives with Constance and Julian in the large Blackwood property in near isolation. Her only contact with the outside world is going to the village to buy groceries and visit the library. The locals aren't very keen on the Blackwood family, eyeing them with suspicion since the deaths that occurred years prior and resenting the large amount of money the family has, despite not doing any hard work.
No, really, the people in town are really nasty towards the sisters, with the children even making a mean song about them, akin to how people made that skipping rope song about Lizzie Borden.
"Merricat, said Connie, would you like a cup of tea? Oh no, said Merricat, you’ll poison me. Merricat, said Connie, would you like to go to sleep? Down in the boneyard ten feet deep!"
You see, the reason for the rhyme is that six years before the events in the book, the sisters parents, their younger brother as well as Uncle Julian and his wife were poised wit arsenic that had been mixed into the sugar bowl. Julian was the only survivor and Constance wasn't poisoned because she didn't eat sugar with her blackberries, and Merricat hadn't been in the dinner that night. Due to her being the only person present who wasn't poisoned, she was arrested and charged with murder, but ended up being acquitted and released back, much to the distaste of the village.
Probably due to her fear that Constance will be taken away again, Merricat has developed many "magical" protections around the property to avoid strangers coming in (it must be noted that Constance herself doesn't leave the house since the trial finished, so the magic could be to keep Constance safe). It's clear, from the beginning, that Merricat loves her sister and has a strong devotion to her. The feeling is mutual as evidenced by Constance telling Merricat how much she missed her, even thought Merricat had only been to village for, at most, a couple hours.
"When I was small I thought Constance was a fairy princess. I used to try to draw her picture, with long golden hair and eyes as blue as the crayon could make them, and a bright pink spot on either cheek; the pictures always surprised me, because she did look like that; even at the worst time she was pink and white and golden, and nothing had ever seemed to dim the brightness of her. She was the most precious person in my world, always."
Julian, their widowed uncle, spend his time writing his memories of the day of the poisoning, obsessively looking at the details of what happened that day and on the day before and it is through his ramblings about the event that we, the readers, learn about what happened. For exemple, he is the one who exposes the fact that Constance was the one who did the cooking, and that she has knowledge of different poisons. Not only that, but she didn't use sugar on her blackberries (although it was a known fact that she never did) and washed the sugar bowl before the police could arrive to the scene - allegedly because there was a spider in it.
Merricat is perfectly happy with Constance staying at home the whole time, as in this way she has her sister basically all to herself. When Constance starts to express some desire to leave the house, Merricat becomes upset and reacts by violently breaking their mother's fancy milk pitcher. Although she doesn't verbally express her displeasure or lashes out in front of Constance, Merricat often breaks things around the house, leaving a path of destruction on the wake of her anger.
"'We’ll always be here together, won’t we, Constance?' 'Don’t you ever want to leave here, Merricat?' 'Where could we go?' I asked her. 'What place would be better for us than this? Who wants us, outside? The world is full of terrible people.' 'I wonder sometimes.' She was very serious for a minute, and then she turned and smiled at me. 'Don’t you worry, my Merricat. Nothing bad will happen.'"
Before Constance can decide if she's ready to explore the outside world, the outside world comes knocking in the form of Cousin Charles, son of her father's other brother. Merricat dislikes him at first sight and even tries to pretend she had only dreamed about his visit and could "dream him away", but Constance seems glad to have the attention of a good looking young man, even if he is her cousin.
Charles claims he wanted to help his cousins after the tragedy that had struck, but hadn't been able because his father wouldn't allow it, but now that his father was dead, he wanted to reunite with the remaining family. Merricat is jealous of how easily Costance (whom Charles calls 'Connie') warms up to the newcomer.
"She was not at all awkward or uncomfortable; it was as though she had been expecting all her life that Cousin Charles would come, as though she had planned exactly what to do and say, almost as though in the house of her life there had always been a room kept for Cousin Charles."
To keep Charles away, Merricat nails a gold watch into a tree, and when Charles sees it, he gets angry because it was a waste of gold. His obsession with money leads Julian to start to think that Charles is only there to try to steal the family fortune.
Charles is no innocent either. When he realises that he won't win Merricat's affection, he quickly start being passive aggressive with her, even insinuating that he might convince Constance to throw her out. And at the same time he tells Connie she should not be waiting on Julian, Charles also has her cook and clean for himself.
Merricat tries her best to shield herself and her sister, but all she can actually do is small actions, like breaking Charles' watch and pouring water in his bed. Charles gets furious with Merricat's childish antics and while Constance doesn't condenes her sister, she doesn't defends her either, simply calling Merricat "silly".
"'You are evil,' I said to Charles. 'You are a ghost and a demon.' 'What the hell?' Charles said. 'Don’t pay any attention,' Constance told him. 'Don’t listen to Merricat’s nonsense.'"
During a large argument between Charles, Merricat and Julian, Charles tell them that Merricat needs to be punished, which makes her run away in fear. Upset and even more angry than before, Merricat waits until dinner time and goes to Charles room, and she finds his pipe, which was still burning. She then throws in into a pile of papers which causes a fire to start. They are in the table when Charles smells smoke.
Constance and Merricat run for safety, but Julian stays behind to gather his papers (the many manuscripts he wrote of his memories from the day of the poisoning). The firefighters come, but they eye the sisters with suspicion, causing them to run and hide in the woods surrounding the property. While all this is going on, Charles is worried about the money in the safe.
"Pulling Constance, I hurried under the trees, in the darkness; when I felt my feet leave the grass of the lawn and touch the soft mossy ground of the path through the woods and knew that the trees had closed in around us I stopped and put my arms around Constance. 'It’s all over,' I told her, and held her tight."
While hiding in the forest, Merricat says that she'll poison everyone and Constance acknowledges that Merricat had done that once before, six years before, by putting arsenic in the sugar as payback for having been sent to the bedroom without dinner.
"'I put it in the sugar.' 'I know. I knew then.' 'You never used sugar.' 'No.' 'So I put it in the sugar.'"
Morning comes and the sisters come out of their hiding spot to see the damage that happened to the house. Most of it is gone, but they decide to clean the few rooms that didn't get crushed or burned and keep living there. Due to the lack of a roof, the house now looks like a castle (hence the title) and with time, vines grow to cover the remaining structure. Charles, who had survived the fire, tries to talk to Constance again, but she rejects him.
The Blackwood sisters become a short of local legend and villagers leave offerings of food in their doorsteps. They go on with living happily in the house, having only each other's company, because they don't need anything else.
"'I love you, Constance,' I said. 'And I love you, my Merricat.'"
Like a said before, they are not canonically incestuous, but it isn't difficult to see why they are so shippable. They protect each other at all costs and can barely function when separated. Since the book ends with them going into isolation, who knows what feelings might come to light?

Page 4: Colton Underwood comes out -- saying he's the happiest and healthiest he's ever been, the former Bachelor clarifies his orientation
Page 5: Lena Dunham is no stranger to controversy, so it comes as no surprise that her foray into fashion design has also come under fire as she partnered with a plus-size label to create the capsule collection 11 Honore x Lena Dunham, but the kicky line quickly came under fire as critics are calling it tone-deaf, mediocre and not inclusive at all since its largest size is a 26 and some are even going so far to call Lena a grifter who gained weight in order to make money off the plus-size community but Lena, who underwent a hysterectomy at 31, has pointed to early menopause as the cause of her straight-up gut -- while Lena refuses to be intimidated by bullies, she is listening to the complaints about sizes and is planning to address it
* Once a cautionary tale of the perils of child stardom, at age 40 Macaulay Culkin is a father himself as he and girlfriend Brenda Song welcomed a son, Dakota -- he's finally overcome his demons and Brenda has been a huge influence on his life and helped him get back on the straight and narrow and he's even pursuing acting again, shooting season 10 of American Horror Story; his life has taken such a positive turn

Page 6: Gwen Stefani is widely thought to have had some help in the nips and tucks department, and as her wedding to Blake Shelton approaches, he is starting to object to her constant tweaking of her face -- she's always messing with it by getting more fillers and Botox and Blake is afraid of what he'll see at the altar and he's freaking out at Gwen's increasingly extreme beauty routine which is becoming increasingly over-the-top; Gwen can barely move her face to smile at him anymore and it looks weird -- while he frets, he's trying to reassure his wife-to-be because Blake thinks she's beautiful just the way she is
* As an executive producer on the long-running Law & Order: SVU, Mariska Hargitay has tasked the writers to come up with more storylines featuring one of her favorite characters: defense attorney Trevor Langan, played by none other than her husband Peter Hermann -- Mariska and Peter originally met and fell in love when Peter guest-starred on the show and she loves to keep that magic alive by bringing him back to play Trevor but the trouble is he is busy with his own gigs as a series regular on Younger and his recurring role on Blue Bloods and Peter loves working with his wife, but he has his own acting career apart from Mariska -- still, he may soon have his day in court because Peter understands how Mariska feels and is trying to work his schedule to allow him some guest spots in the near future

* Jennifer Lopez calls off her relationship with Alex Rodriguez
* Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher are better than ever after overcoming a rough patch, one that had their inner circle convinced they were headed for divorce -- Mike had a serious roving eye that made Carrie anxious and she would treat him like he was Mr. Underwood and tensions between the two were at an all-time high when the pandemic hit, forcing the two into extra one-on-one time, but as it turns out, their new routine is just what they needed because they set boundaries, divided up tasks and put time aside for fun things and they prioritized romance, which has made all the difference -- Carrie and Mike are re-committed to their marriage and they've been through so much so much and neither wants to throw it away

Could you do the rest of the autumnal asks? :D
maple - is there a hobby / skill that you’ve always wanted to try but never did? - Acting
frost - if you could give some advice to your younger self, what would you say? - “Do not betray your culture because everyone idolizes America. Stand with the Gods of your Ancestors, do not flock together with sheep. There is no shame in being unique”
lantern - how did you meet your best friend? What were your first impressions of each other? - I currently have two people I’d consider my best friends. One I met in a literature event we both sent our writing to and soon realized we have a lot in common. Other I met on here, we connected through our love for metal and horror. Shout out to @forestrunewitch (who ditched tumblr for ages already, R.I.P.) and @cthulhu-is-metal 🖤
harvest - what fictional character do you most identify with? - Valak (The Conjuring/The Nun), Bughuul (Sinister), Temperance Brennan, Phantom of the Opera, Freddy Krueger, Damien Karras. I am obviously exclufing characters of my own creation. fireside - if you had your dream wardrobe, what would it look like? - full of band shirts and horror merch, several dresses from killstar, a few pairs of combat boots (heels, too) and biker pants, a couple or three of fantasmagoria bags and coats, a lot of leather attire, countless acressories, piece or two of lingerie and many oversized band/horror hoodies. Sounds about that. . cider - a food that you disliked as a child but now enjoy? - mushroomsamber - share an unpopular opinion that you may have. - I am afraid most of my opinions are… unpopular, especially fandom wise. Let’s say I think Cardinal Copia is the actual Horseman of Pestilence, a dominant in bed and a bisexual with heavy preference for women. Also I think Valak is the most attractive character in The Conjuring/The Nun.fog - how well do you think you’d do in a zombie apocalypse scenario? - Wonderful as long as I am a good ruler to the deadjack-o-lantern - if you could look like any celebrity, who would you choose? - Taissa Farmiga or Winona Ryderspice - have you ever encountered a house that you believed to be haunted? - No, at least by a malevolent spirit. Speaking about a benevolent one, I am pretty sure he stayed in his home, but I could not confirm his presence, neither could his wifeorchard - share one thing that you’d like to happen this autumn. - see the new Michap Myers move on Halloweencrow - which school subject do you wish you had an aptitude for? - Physics. An awful teacher ruined it for me before I realized how much it interests me. bonfire - describe your dream house. - right now I mostly imagine an apartament. It’s small, because I am young and just starting to gain, though fitting me, my cat, my rats, maybe even a dog, a snake, a rabbit and my theoretical significant other. The walls are covered in metal and horror posters, a few flags hang too. The space itself is a mess. Shelves break from my collection of books, figurines, props, cds and dvds. I possess a lot of house plants, and the couch is not enough for cushions, blankets and horror plushies. Neither is the bed. Clothes are thrown everywhere. The air has heavy smell of perfume, cigarette smoke and books. The tables are ridden with art supplies, magazines, candles, bottles of whiskey, notebooks… I don’t know. The vision is pretty abstract. I’d lay it out far better if I had seen the space.cinnamon - if you had to live in a time period different than the present, which would you choose and where? - Old heathen Lithuania most likely. cobweb - (if you’ve graduated) do you miss high school? - I have not yet graduated and I am pretty sure I will never misd that fuckhole. cranberry - what’s one physical feature that you get complimented on? - my eyes and my hairmaize - share the weirdest encounter you’ve had with a stranger on the street. - I pressed the wrong number on my door code and had to wait a few seconds. Suddenly, there was a man running towards me. I panicked. Luckily, I managed to get the code right the second time. I slammed the door just as the man was to reach me. I did not not know what he wanted and I did not want to find out despite I probably would have been able to defend myself as he, in the brief flash, seemed of honorable age. He slammed at the door, cussing. I felt relieved. I was safe. Only a while after I realized I never heard a sound… no footsteps, no voice, no slam… I still wonder was he really there. quilt - how do you take your tea (or coffee)? - I enjoy various herbal teas, fruit teas, black tea with almond milk or lemon, lemon tea with sugar or honey. As for coffee, I drink it either raw black, those insmatnt 3in1 coffees or sometimes just choose an interesting latte as well as other coffee drink variations that intrigue me in the coffee shop. pumpkin - do you think that humans are inherently good or bad? - Neither. It is purely a choice. moonlit - are you a neat or messy person? Is your room / house orderly? - Definitely messy. My house and room is the opposite of orderly.flannel - have you ever gone on a bad date? - No, but I have been in a bad place in a relationship. cocoa - if you could have any type of hair, what colour and cut would you have? - I would have long, luscious, slightly wavy black hair with “666” shaved into the temple.ghost - is there someone that you miss having in your life? - Yes

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND May 17, 2019  - JOHN WICK CHAPTER 3, A DOG’S JOURNEY, THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR
Well, the summer is grinding along at a rather slow pace. Granted, it’s only the third or fourth official weekend, depending on when you started counting, and if you live in New York City, it doesn’t really feel like summer at all, but as has been the case since starting my beat at The Beat, I hope people will be reading this for the limited releases and repertory stuff, which I try to make fairly comprehensive and complete.
Tumblr media
Normally, I wouldn’t be too impressed with Lionsgate’s decision to release Keanu Reeves’ JOHN WICK CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM in the summer, but surprise, surprise, I actually liked this one. A LOT! I already reviewed the movie for The Beat, a review which you can read here, but I do think that most of the people who liked the first movie will like this one, too, as it adds the likes of Halle Berry, Asia Kate Dillon  (Orange is the New Black) and Mark Dacascos to flesh out the mythology while sending John Wick on the run as he’s excommunicated from the assassin’s guild.
I don’t have as much an opinion about the doggie sequel A DOG’S JOURNEY (Universal). I mean, I like dogs just fine, but I never got around to seeing A Dog’s Purpose, and I’m not sure I can follow this movie’s high-concept premise without having seen it. Apparently, a dog dies and then keeps coming back as another dog in order to protect Dennis Quaid’s daughter… no, I don’t get how that works either, but I’ll probably never see this.
The other movie I’ve seen which opens Friday is Ry Russo-Young’s THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR (Warner Bros./MGM), based on the novel by Nicola Yoon, starring Yara Shahidi (black-ish,grown-ish) and Charles Melton from Riverdale. If you know me at all, then you can probably guess that I’ve never seen those shows, but I have seen Russo-Young’s other films, and she’s a director that’s definitely grown on me as she’s taken on YA adaptations. I’m not going to write a full review of this one (due to time constraints and illness) but I was generally mixed on it. I thought the two young actors were fantastic, and this was a perfectly nice romantic film that generally used its New York locations well, but there were definitely parts where I was just bored and not that into the story. It’s a shame, because I usually buy into the whole fate and destiny thing, especially when it come to romance, but this one just gets silly at times.
You can find out what I think of the above film’s box office prospects over at The Beat.
LIMITED RELEASES
This is a very busy week for limited releases with a lot of things coming out of the woodwork at the last minute… and honestly, most of what I’ve seen is just okay, at best.
Tumblr media
Jack O’Connell plays Cameron Todd Willingham in Ed Zwick’s TRIAL BY FIRE (Roadside Attractions), based on the true story of the Texas man accused of murdering his three young daughters via arson in 1991. He spent 12 years on Death Row before his case found its way to writer Elizabeth Gilbert, played by Laura Dern, who tries to negate the evidence against Willingham. I wanted to like this movie more than I did, because it is an interesting story with a decent script written by Oscar winner Geoffrey Fletcher (Precious), based on an article by New Yorker writer David Grann (apparently all of his articles become movies, so he has a good agent, huh?). The movie is generally okay, mainly due to the fantastic rounded performance by O’Connell but it’s also quite long-winded and didn’t need to be over two hours to get its point across.
Joanna Hogg’s autobiographical British indie THE SOUVENIR (A24) stars Honor Swinton Byrne (yes, that’s Tilda’s daughter) as film school student Julie who encounters and gets involved with a gregarious and opinionated older man named named Anthony (Tom Burke) who turns out to be a heroin junkie who effectively sabotages the film she’s trying to get made. While I can generally understand what Hogg was trying to do with this movie, I found it very long and drawn-out, and I was even more shocked to learn that this was meant to be the first of a two-part movie, but no, I won’t bother with Part 2 even if it does star Robert Pattinson, probably as another dick who tries to derail Julie’s career, cause that’s what men do.
The Lunchbox director Ritesh Batra returns to India for the romantic drama PHOTOGRAPH (Amazon) about Rafi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a man from a poor village who takes a picture of student named Miloni (Sanya Malhotra) and sends it to his grandma, saying it’s his new girlfriend, so she’ll get off his back about marrying. Rafi sends his grandma a picture of Miloni, but then has to convince Miloni to play along and meet his grandmother when she comes to Mumbai. As the two spend more time getting to know each other, a romance begins. It’s a nice movie, maybe not quite as great as The Lunchbox, but a nice date night movie for sure.
Opening at the Metrograph, which is in the midst of a Ryusuke Hamaguchi retrospective, is the Japanese filmmaker’s most recent film ASAKO I AND II (Grasshopper Films), based on the novel by Tomoka Shibasaki. It begins with a romance between a shy girl from (Asako, played by Erika Karata) who falls for a young man named Baku (Masahiro Higashide), who suddenly vanishes on her. She ends up moving to Tokyo and meeting another man named Ryohei, who is Baku’s spitting image – maybe because he’s also played by Higashide. A relationship develops between them until Asako learns what happened to Baku. This is definitely a strange but mostly satisfying romance story that would be a great date night double feature of Photograph.
From Sweden comes Pella Kagerman and Hugo Lilja’s sci-fi thriller ANIARA (Magnet Releasing), which takes place on the title spaceship which is taking the three-week journey to Mars full of thousands of passengers when it’s knocked off course. The problem is that it might take years to get back on course, which immediately throws everyone on board into a panic. At the center of it is Emelie Jonsson’s woman who runs a “Mima chamber” where people can go to relax, a chamber that gets increasingly more busy until it breaks down and then things just get completely crazy.  If you wondered what Passengersmight have been like if Gaspar Noe directed it then Aniarais the movie for you, but I did like Jonsson’s character arc as she ends up starting a relationship with a woman officer on the ship and where that story goes.
Karen Gillan stars in Collin Schiffli’s ALL CREATURES HERE BELOW (Samuel Goldwyn), which is written by and co-stars David Dastmalchian from Ant-Manand other films. It deals with a couple living in poverty, forcing him to break the law, as they set off to find refuge in Kansas City. I haven’t seen it but it sounds interesting with that casting.
Shirley Jackson’s 1962 mystery novel WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE CASTLE (Brainstorm Media)is adapted by filmmaker Stacie Passon with an all-star cast including Taissa Farmiga, Alexandra Daddario, Sebastian Stan and Crispin Glover. Farmiga plays Merricat who lives with her sister Constance (Daddario) and uncle (Glover), the only survivors of a poisonic that killed the rest of their family five years earlier. When their cousin Charles (Stan) arrives, asking about the family’s finances, it begins a battle for control as tragedy looms.
Now playingat the Film Forum is The Third Wife (Film Movement), Ash Mayfair’s Vietnamese drama set in the 19th Century about a 14-year-old named May, who becomes the third wife of a much older man. With a mostly female cast and crew, the film has drawn comparisons to Zhang Yimou’s Raise the Red Lantern and some of the flashbacks in The Joy Luck Club (which I recently rewatched and cried my eyes out, but don’t tell anyone).
Then opening Friday at the Film Forum is Andrey Paunov’s documentary Walking on Water (Kino Lorber), about artist Christo and his late wife Jeanne-Claude, who had built some of the most amazing large-scale installations including the famous “The Gates” in Central Park and their most recent project “The Floating Piers” over Lake Iseo in Italy. The movie will open in L.A. and San Fran next Friday, May 24.
Johnny Depp stars in Wayne Roberts’ The Professor (Saban Films), a movie that seems to be getting dumped into theaters after a DirecTV release. Depp plays Richard, a college lecturer who discovers he has six months to live so he turns into a party animal, much to the shock of his wife (Rosemarie DeWitt) and chancellor (Ron Livingston). Also costarring Zoey Deutch, it opens in select cities.
Kevin and Michael Goetz’s A Violent Separation (Screen Media) stars Brenton Thwaites as Norman Young, deputy of a midwstern town who is forced to arrest his older brother Ray (Ben Robson) for murder. Things get more difficult when Norman gets involved with the victim’s younger sister (Alycia Debnam-Carey). It opens at New York’s Cinema Village and a few other theaters as well as On Demand.
Now playing at the Roxy Cinema in New York is Matt Hinton’s doc Parallel Love: The Story of a Band Called Luxury (Abramorama) about the small-town band Luxury, whose career almost ended in a wreck, but who continue to make records even as three members become priests.
Another music-related doc out this week is the Cordero Brothers thriller Room 37 - The Mysterious Death of Johnny Thunders (Cleopatra Entertainment), which as you might guess from the title is about famed rocker Johnny Thunders (Leo Ramsay) and how his trip to New Orleans to get his life together turned deadly.
This week’s Bollywood offering is Aki Ali’s De De Pyaar De, starring Ajay Devgn, Tabu and Rakul Preet Singh in a London-based love triangle.
Opening in New York this Friday, then in L.A. May 24 and VOD June 21 is Eddie Alcazar’s Perfect  (Breaker Films), exec. produced by Steven Soderbergh, which stars Garrett Wareing as a troubled young man sent to a clinic by his mother (Abbie Cornish) to help with his dark visions.
Next up is Rachel Carey’s Ask for Jane  (Level Film) starring Cait Cortelyou in a timely movie set in Chicago 1969 where abortion is punishable by prison and two women try to find a doctor to help a pregnant student at the University of Chicago has tried to kill herself. The two women end up forming the Jane Collective, an organization that helps women get safe abortions.
Asa Butterfield, Finn Cole, Hermione Corfield, Michael Sheen, Margot Robbie, Nick Frost and Simon Pegg star in Crispian Mills’ horror-comedy Slaughterhouse Rulez set in a British boarding school where monsters have been unleashed from a sinkhole. The movie was a hit in England but is barely getting a release in the States even with that amazing cast.
STREAMING AND CABLE
Not much of note on Netflix except Kate Melville’s rom-com Good Sam, a movie about a reporter who is trying to find a stranger who is leaving bags of money all around New York City.
I probably haven’t been paying enough attention to the streaming service MUBU, but in honor of the Cannes Film Festival that started this week, the service is doing a “Cannes Takeover” which includes Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park, Crisi Piu’s The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, Alejandro Innaritu’s Amores Perrosand other films that broke out of the French film festival.

On Monday, they’ll screen a rare 35mm print of Pasonlini’s The Gospel According to St. Matthew(1964). Since I really enjoyed Ferrara’s new film starring Willem Dafoe, I’m bummed I missed the Metrograph’s retrospective of Pasolini last year, but this is a good chance to see this prolific Italian filmmaker’s often-controversial work.
QUAD CINEMA (NYC):
Another great series begins at the Quad this weekend with Fighting Mad: German Genre Films from the Margins, based around Dominik Graf’s two-part documentary A Journey Through German Film. Graf programmed the series with Olaf Müller, who presents a few of the screenings. It’s a pretty rich series with no films that I personally have had a chance to see – I have a couple screeners to watch – but there are sure to be a few gems in there if you have time to see some of the 17 movies.

𝐦𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐞  /  𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐧 & 𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚 .
Never in a million years did he think this would ever happen. She was the only person he wanted to be with from now until forever. This was it for him. Nobody else compared to her in his eyes. Seeing her stood across from him right now made his heart beat ten times faster than normal. Excitement mingled with nerves knowing they were mere minutes away from becoming husband and wife. He was going to have a wife. The thought of it made his head spin out of pure joy.
If he didn’t have her hand in his he was sure he’d be much more of a nervous mess. Even the slightest touch from her could calm him. It wasn’t that he was nervous because he was scared it was more the fact that he wanted to be good enough for her. He wanted everything to be perfect because that’s what she deserved more than anything. Once the officiant started speaking, Evan couldn’t even hide the quiet chuckle. This whole thing was crazy but he couldn’t think of anything more perfect. Everything she was saying meant the world to him — he knew it was real, he knew that nobody had ever loved him like she did. This was one hundred percent real love. He could feel his own emotions getting the better of him, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. Now it was his turn. Taking a shaky breath, he began to speak. “I, Evan Peters take Taissa Farmiga, to be my wife, to have and to hold in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish until death do we part. You are the love of my life and have had my heart before I even realised it. There’s no other person in the world that makes me as happy as you do and I’ll spend the rest of my life making you as happy as you make me.” He felt his own emotions getting the better of him, eyes glossing over allowing a small pause before he carried on. “I love you with everything I have. I’ll make sure to tell you that every single day. Being with you is the best thing to ever happen to me. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us. This is just the start.”
Her eyes refused to leave him, watching with complete adoration. Just as it always seemed, it felt as though they were the only two on the planet especially within this moment. Thankful that she had purchased a recording of their ceremony, as she knew that even looking back on it together would be just as heart-fluttering as the present feeling was. Taissa had loved him for so long, that it was difficult to keep herself under control as she watched Evan’s own emotions get the best for him, the desire to hold him nearly inescapable. But she felt firm, offering a reassuring squeeze of his hand as her town tears began to streak down her cheeks. Her smile completely encompassing her entire face, unable to gaze anywhere but up to the man ahead of her.
They were even unable to wander to the man dressed at Elvis at their side, who had now handed the pair the rings to exchange. Their sizes having been submitted just before they arrived. Taissa repeated after him, sliding the gold circle onto the ring finger of Evan’s left hand. “I give you this ring as a symbol of my commitment to love, honour and respect you.” Her fingers brush over the ring, now fitting snugly on his finger. Soon, as the gesture is repeated back, the officiant, in the most dramatic Elvis Presley fashion, declares that they may now seal their vows with a kiss and finally pronounced them husband and wife. Taissa releases a delighted gasp, her hands immediately reaching up to cup either side of Evan’s face as she leans in for a kiss.

KISS MY ASS - My Review of THE MULE (2 Stars)
Tumblr media
As much as I’m in awe of an 88-year-old man churning out a couple of films a year, two of which went on to win Best Picture Oscars, sometimes I wish Clint Eastwood would just slow the f*ck down and bring a little more TLC to the scripts he directs, the pacing, and tonal consistency.  With THE MULE, his 37th feature film as a director, he has taken a totally compelling saga, adapted by Nick Schenk from Sam Dolnick’s 2014 New York Times magazine story, and has delivered something scattershot, stop-and-go, and just plain odd.  He has opted for something mild (which would have been a really good alternate review title now that I think about it) despite the fact that this story has social relevance and fairly high stakes.
Eastwood plays Earl Stone, an elderly horticulturist who has gone broke, lost his house, and incurred the wrath of his ex-wife and daughter (played by Dianne Wiest and Alison Eastwood respectively), whom he consistently disappoints with his flaky behavior.    If it weren’t for his loving granddaughter Ginny (Taissa Farmiga), Earl would never be allowed at family functions, such as Ginny’s wedding.  It’s at her pre-wedding celebration where Earl meets a guest who turns him on to a job opportunity driving mysterious packages across the country.  Earl, being of the age that falls for email scams such as “I’m the Prince of Nigeria and can you hold onto my millions for a month”, doesn’t catch on at first that he’s been hired as a mule for a Mexican drug cartel.  Realizing he’s quite good at driving unnoticed, Earl signs up for repeat assignments which solve his financial woes.  It’s only a matter of time, however, until the DEA catches up to him, with a serviceable Bradley Cooper and Michael Peña leading the charge.  On paper, this sounds like a wonderful ticking clock thriller featuring current economic undertones and the difficulty our aging population has of finding its footing.
Unfortunately, the script makes Earl an unrepentant casual racist and homophobe.  He may learn to recognize that he’s neglected his family all these years, but pretty much gets away with using the terms “maricon” and “negro” in moments which are meant to show how amusingly out of touch he is, instead of being an asshole.  Oh that Earl!  He’s set in in his ways!  Isn’t he the bees knees?  Eastwood also gives the film a too-folksy tone with its plethora of 70s soft rock hits and country jingles laid over every driving scene.  Even more vexing is the middle of the movie scene in which a Latino gets pulled over by the cops and informs them twice that minorities are most likely to die at the point of being stopped by law enforcement.  It’s a worthwhile message, of course, but it comes across like an overwritten PSA.  Everything about this film feels a little light and off-key, especially considering how serious his crimes are and how it contains the real possibility he could be killed or jailed at any moment.  Earl’s meant to be charming.  He doesn’t know how to text but he gets to know the cartel flunkies personally.  He even turns the tension with his handler (Ignacio Serricchio form Netflix’s LOST IN SPACE) into buddy comedy material.  It’s all fun and games until somebody gets hurt.
It doesn’t help that Eastwood works with a jumpy script. At one moment, Cooper’s character is given until the end of the day to capture Earl.  Sounds good.  Let the tension mount.  Instead, with no further mention of time running out, we cut to Earl arriving in Mexico to meet with the cartel head (Andy Garcia) and twerk endlessly with bikini-clad women at a pool party.  Huh?  What happened to the timeline?  Holy SCARFACE, why this very long sidetrack to show us a rager?  Didn’t Eastwood get this sexy time out of his system in THE 15:17 TO PARIS?  Why are there so many close-ups of butts?
THE MULE doesn’t really achieve its potential for depth because it doesn’t quite take the rich material seriously.  There’s one great shot of Eastwood, however, towards the end of the film.  Bloodied and bruised (although we’re not sure how), he drives and looks into the camera with the soured, grizzled, mad at the world rage we’ve been waiting for.  It captures perfectly the absurdity of the situation and tonally, this demeanor would have worked throughout.  Perhaps the filmmakers are staying true to the real person, but this film would have had a lot more gravitas had it mined Earl’s anger and not his genial side.  To put it succinctly, I’d rather hear him yell “Get off my lawn” than sing along terribly to Charles Earland’s “More Today Than Yesterday”.

Bat, Broomstick, Haunted House (celebrity edition ;) ), Monster, Skeleton, Spooky, Witch
Bat: If you could transform into any kind of animal, what animal would you be?Oddly enough, I think being a raven or crow or a bird similar would be optimal. You wouldn't be small and fragile, birds of prey would leave you alone and you can fly from any ground threats. Humans more or less ignore you, so you're free to go wherever you want outdoors. And I'm pretty sure some ravens are really just people in disguise anyway.
Broomstick: If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be?Anywhere, honestly anywhere, with a preference overseas. As long as it was relatively safe, it's impossible for me to prioritize cultures, landmarks, cuisines, architecture, language -- there's something amazing to be had, to be seen, to be experienced anywhere you go. I guess the short answer is, wherever will expand my mind and heart most, which I can't possible know until I've been there, or until I find the next place that gives me that feeling but better.
Haunted House: If you could be roommates with anyone of your choice, who would you pick (celebrity edition)? Oh man. Fictional edition would be easier. I can only guess as to the living habits of celebrities. Well, I always thought it'd be cool to have multiple roommates (in a big enough space - communal living doesn't bother me as long as there is one room that is mine and there is respect for shared spaces), so in this scenario, let's say I have three. Tatiana Maslaney for one, because I genuinely think we'd get on really well. She seems charming, intelligent, gracious and respectful of others, someone you could have a deep conversation with, especially about the arts. And we'd have joint birthday parties until the day one of us moved out, 'cuz we were both born on September 22. Second would be Vera Farmiga, because every group needs a Mama Bear, and seeing Vera's friendship with Freddie Highmore and her sister Taissa Farmiga, I know she is willing to lend her experience and comfort with who she is as a person to encourage others to make the right choices for themselves and their art. I imagine she would be the one to read all my work and give me tips, and I would be predisposed to accepting her criticism, because she is Vera Farmiga. Also, as a director, she and TMas would have lots to talk about, which equals to lots of things for me to learn about the biz. And to round out the group, last but certainly not least, Josh Hutcherson, because he is one of the sweetest men in Hollywood and he's friends with Woody and JLaw, which means I could join their smoke circles maybe? Please? Yes. If not, a night in with these roomies would be just fine.
Monster: What is your favorite scary movie to watch in the dark?Hmm, I usually don't watch scary movies in the dark. It's not an element I find necessarily aids every horror film, but one that I think benefits most from a watch in the dark would probably be The Babadook, and on the other side of the coin,Silent Hill. In those instances, feeling the dark press on you keeps you more empathetic to the heroine's plight in both films. It narrows the focus both mother's have, allowing you to feel the urgency and the despair of both situations acutely and intimately. Plus after it's all said and done, you go away with some sense of victory, which makes the darkness when you go to sleep less of a monster and more of something to chew on.
Skeleton: Tell me one of your biggest secrets?I'm one of the most boring people in the world, really. If something's a secret, I've likely not kept it consciously. My secrets are probably best defined as things that crossed my mind or that I did that I decided were not worthy of mention because they were literally that minute. That, and I think there's a massive difference between a secret and things you only share with the people you're most intimate with. Secrets really have a connotation of being purposeful to me.  So in that regard, I suppose my biggest secret is being my wife's roommate to her family. This is an ideal situation for the reality, so no need for concern. But it is the secret I've put the most effort into.
Spooky: What was your last nightmare about?I wake up so many times through the night, it's rare I remember a dream, let alone a nightmare. I honestly couldn't tell you. See, told you I'm boring.
Witch: If could have the power to cast any kind of spell, what kind of spell would you cast?Taking a leaf from my wife's book, I too have to say the ability to heal any illness in human or animal. There is so much suffering in this world. People do not benefit from the misfortunes they are born with, or have had inflicted on them. In fact, I think if more of us were given the same opportunities in the ways of healthy bodies free of mental and physical deficiencies, we'd be a kinder people as a whole. Thanks for the ask, love!
