Coping with loss - Taiora scene for 'Here With You'

A/N: First of all, not my best writing at all. Second, a little explanation. I came up with a long multi chapter story that I call 'Here With You'. It's canon-compliant -for all we know- up till the 02's epilogue. From there on it's all speculations. The story is about Taichi who's a widower, mourning over the loss of his wife Rei (Saiba, from V-Tamers) and Sora, who divorced Yamato. The Sora and Yamato being divorced is based on a theory I've written about how the epilogue might staged a possible Sorato divorce. Never published it publicly, only in the Taiora Discord Server. This piece is a possible scene for that fic. Maybe I'll write it in full one day, maybe I don't. We'll see. For now, enjoy this thing.

Day 5: Jealousy | Characters: Sora Takenouchi (POV), Taichi Yagami | Genre: Hurt/comfort I think? | Rating: T | Wordcount: 1.524

Looking at her picture on top of the piano, it came to Sora how many resemblances they had. She had always found Rei quite impressive with her natural energy and sparkly personality, her beauty was unmatched in her eyes. Sora had always felt less compared to her, but looking at her picture, the flickering light of the candle shining a light on Rei’s hair and features, she saw the similarities more clear.

The biggest difference was that Sora was here and Rei was definitely not.

Sora glanced at Taichi, who stood next to her. His face looked calm.

“Do you ever miss her?” She asked him impulsively. It was obvious he did, Sora knew, still she asked him and she immediately regretted it. “Sorry, of course you miss her. I just—”

“No, it’s fine, Sora.” Taichi calmly responded, his eyes still glued to his late wife’s picture. “Yes, I miss her. I really do, just… not every day.”

The way he said it seemed genuine to Sora, yet no matter how many times he would say he was fine, she never believed he was fully honest with himself. She knew he was good at concealing what he felt and to the outside world, it always looked like Taichi was fine. That he was cool about anything and everything. Behind the mask, however, was a pain indescribable.

“I used to, the first year after Rei’s death,” Taichi continued. “That first year was tough and I thought about her each and every day. Until there was one day— it was at the end of the day that I realized I hadn’t thought of her, not even for one second. I cried that night and I felt so… unfaithful? To her, to who she was, to the bond she and I had and even to myself. I punished myself for forgetting about her and I forcefully tried to commemorate Rei every single hour of each and every day. But as you know, it made everything worse instead of better and I slipped into a deep and dark hole.”

Sora nodded. Images of Taichi trying to navigate through life again these past few years after that big of a loss, played in front of her eyes like a movie. Sora could only imagine what he had gone through, her own situation being nothing compared to his.

She admired him for his strength and how he eventually coped with all if it. It was a long way and it hadn’t been easy, still, he managed and came out as an even more caring man and loving father. Sora wondered what exactly had made Taichi be able to move forward again.

Her eyes scanned Taichi for answers. As if he felt her asking for them, he inhaled. A faint smile appeared on his face, his own gaze still consumed by Rei’s picture.

“Then, at some point, I was reminded of one of the last conversations I had with her. Before Rei died, she made me promise a few things and among those promises was one to always choose happiness over mourning. To always choose love over my feelings to be loyal to her even after her death. It took me a while to figure out what exactly she meant –to be exact three years— but once I figured it out it made me see that remembering her and being happy could co-exist. She basically told me to fall in love again when the time was ripe.”

Taichi’s head then turned to Sora and their eyes locked. Sora’s heart stopped for a moment, unsure of what it meant.

“Until now that didn’t happened, not in that deep connection-way at least.” Taichi said. Her heart dropped again and nerves crept up on her, making her shift her gaze away from Taichi and to Rei’s picture again.

In Sora’s eyes, Taichi deserved the world. She wished for him to be happy again in the best way possible. She wished for him to have and feel that kind of love again. But after hearing him say that, she felt the bitter feeling similar to jealousy.

Admittedly, for brief moments after her divorce from Yamato, Sora had let the thought of her and Taichi being each other’s consolation come and go. Except that it would never be the answer. She knew. She thought. Yet she wasn’t completely sure.

“Besides, the most important thing in all of this is that it brought me to where I am now.”

Sora felt the soft touch of his warm hand on her shoulder. She sharply turned her head back to look at Taichi again. “And where is that?” She asked.

“Here.” He stated with the kindest of cheeky smiles. “Standing in front of her picture, candle burning, I’m commemorating her in a healthy way…”

There wasn’t an end to his sentence. Sora held her breath for a second, not sure about what he was going to say, but knowing it would probably be something cheesy.

“And I’m here with you.”

She was right. The softness in his voice made her relax, as if he was telling her everything was still possible. The corners of her mouth made her lips curl into a kind and understanding smile.

“You are,” she eventually replied, any bitter feeling left steadily flowing away.

They stood there for a little while and the beating of Sora’s heart increased its pace while drowning in the depths of Taichi’s dark brown globes. What felt like an hour were mere seconds.

“You know Sor,” Sora tried to think back to the last time he had called her by that nickname, at the same time remarking he was trying to turn the tension, “you should start choosing happiness and love over mourning too!”

A bitter feeling returned.

“But… I’m not mourning?” She asked both annoyed and confused. What was he trying? She took a very small step back.

“Yes you are.” That was a blunt way to put it, Sora thought to herself. “By divorcing Yamato you lost stability and a safe connection, those are things to mourn about just as much. I mean, it’s been what?”

She thought and realized it had already been half a year. “Six months…”

“Six months! I know it was all shitty with Yamato and the children and the divorce and all. You have mourned your losses and fixed what could be fixed. And by doing so, you set yourself aside. I get that, really, but don’t you think now’s the time to pursue your own happiness and luck?”

Sora raised an eyebrow at him. The softness he had shown her just before was replaced by utter… excitement? The assumption this was Taichi’s way of coping with her problems passed Sora’s thoughts and in an odd way it felt like him bragging to her. About his own process, showing her how great he came out of it.

It annoyed her. So “I guess?” was her answer.

Maybe there was a truth in it.

“I think Rei would have said the same. No, actually, to put it in teenager Rei words: Sora, you need to get laid.”

The smug smile on Taichi’s face sent Sora into states she had no idea she could reach anymore.

“E-excuse you?!”

“You’ve heard me.” Taichi said and Sora knew he was still able to get under her skin in so many different ways. “You’re in desperate need of some loving connection to get you over that mourning a bit. Find yourself a man that makes you feel good and sexy and loved or… I don’t know, whatever suits you. Hell, for all I know, it could also be a woman!”

“Taichi…” Sora rolled her eyes.

She wasn’t right most likely, but the way he was talking to Sora made her think he was trying to show her he had decided to cope with his wife’s death by getting it on with more than one woman because Rei had said so. She couldn’t help but to feel he was sort of bragging, right? And so Sora justified it in her head.

Speaking about this though, I know a guy…” He continued once more.

“Taichi, please.”

The bitter feeling kept growing. Though where she had been annoyed at first, it felt more closely to the jealousy she felt earlier.

Jealous of what exactly, she thought. Sora wasn’t particularly jealous of the woman Taichi –maybe, apparently— had been with.

“A colleague of mine went through a divorce too a little less than a year ago and he’s your type! Blonde, likes playing music…

“Taichi!”

No. She was jealous of what Rei had told him when she left, giving him the ability to be open to new love connections.

“What? It’s a perfect match! So I’m going to fix you that date and you can thank me on your bare knees for it after you are ‘satisfied’, heh.”

Sora’s face turned bright red, completely robbed from any form of reaction to Taichi’s ideas. Downright annoyed with him, yet envying him in so many ways all the same.

Perhaps she was just jealous of him not choosing her for that love connection…

The style is one in which starters are the characters talking to their "mun" or players, which is common when "voice-testing" a character to possibly app {apply} into a future {typically pan-fandom, or cross-canon across multiple fan-bases} DWrp {Dreamwidth.org} rp game. Games usually have their own settings, styles and rules and you should carefully consider them before applying to any. (I eventually ended up applying for Koushiro at a DigiAdv{s}-centric game that ended up eventually dying...)

I whited out a few parts to give the former Tai-mun a bit of privacy, but to my knowledge I haven't seen them as active since. Hopefully they won't mind me posting just one old thread between us, because it was really really fun to try back then! Even playing Koushiro was still really fun, despite it being for a very short timeframe of a couple years + even if I never found an active Taichi player {+in a close in age range} to me since.

This was BEFORE Tri had fully aired or before Kokuhaku was even announced, so Koushiro has a small mix of icons I'm using, but sometimes I switch between "canon-points" of early Adventure!Koushiro or late, OWG era or post-02 but pre-epilogue!Koushiro. Tri!Koushiro wasn't even animated more animatedly yet (and much later had very limited appearance in Saikai, etc.), so I was mainly relying on my head-canons for a Koushiro that appears between 2002 and the epilogue, but I often imagined Koushiro of those ages still sticking very close to both 02 and Tri looks. {I did like Tri giving Koushiro back slightly spikier hair, because that was how I imagined Koushiro during in-between years too.} Muns could later go back and update some icons, so some default icons may later change as well. {That's how a Tri!Taichi icon shows here even though it's 2k12}

Also, its very fun because you can personalize your responses even using things like subject headers way better than on this kind of site, and sometimes muns leave you really fun and kind messages that make you want to cry so you try to show them appreciation in turn!!!

helpless (hikari week, day five)

for hikari week, @sluggybasson107 and i decided to collaborate - for every entry i’ve written, she’s drawn an image. the picture (below the cut) was created by sluggy, and with her permission, i’ve posted it along with a story.

summary: when hikari is in the hospital with pneumonia, taichi goes back to visit her // also on AO3

When Hikari woke before the sun was up, she could feel that something was wrong. Coughs wracked her small frame, chest burning with a fire that couldn’t be extinguished. Though she was on the bottom bunk, Hikari couldn’t muster the energy to wake her brother up. 

Instead, she laid half-lidded, patiently waiting for her parents to come check on them before they left for work.

Just as the sun kissed the horizon, Hikari dozed off, only to be woken by a pair of worried hands.  Their overhead light had been flicked on, the bright light pounding on the back of her eyelids. 

“Hikari? I need you to open your eyes.” Her mother’s breath fanned across Hikari’s cheeks. Her pillow was damp with sweat, chest heaving. 

Forcing her eyes open, she stared weakly at her mother’s furrowed eyebrows. “Mommy?”  she croaked, wincing as her throat twitched in protest. 

From the doorway, her father murmured something too low for Hikari to hear, her eyes fluttering shut. Pins and needles danced across her sensitive skin, the cotton of her pajamas almost overbearing. 

Her mother’s fingers danced around her forehead, pushing back the hair that had plastered itself in place. “She definitely has a fever, but it’s too late to call out of work,” the woman mused. 

Hikari leaned into the touch, her mother’s cool fingertips refreshing against her warm skin. 

The bedframe creaked, Hikari’s older brother finally rousing from his slumber. 

“Good morning, sleepy-head,” their father called, eliciting a whimper from his daughter. 

A few tears sprung from her eyelids, a grimace distorting her fine features. “It hurts,” she whispered. 

With Hikari’s eyes shut, she couldn’t see the way Taichi leaned over the railing, hair mussed from sleeping and eyes wide with worry. 

“I can watch her when I get home from school today,” he offered, the bed frame groaning as he tumbled down the ladder.  

“That’s sweet, but I’m not sure. You’re still a little boy.” His mother reminded him, taking the cool washrag her husband thrust in her direction. 

Careful to avoid his sister’s form, Taichi crawled onto the bottom bunch next to his mother, brown eyes large. “But, mom,” he shouted, lowering his voice once Hikari flinched, “I’m eight years old, now. I can do it. I promise.”

Hikari’s eyes fluttered open once more, watching as her mother situated the wet rag onto her forehead. A miniscule sigh slipped through her dry lips, chest burning with every breath.

Her parents shared a look, uncertainty curling the corners of their mouths downwards. “Okay,” she relented, “But we’ll be a little late today; we’ve already planned to visit your grandparents.”

Taichi cheered, accidently jostling his sister. His mother only shook her head, repositioning her daughter until Hikari was more comfortable. 

With a kiss to each forehead, their parents left for work, leaving their sick daughter in Taichi’s care.

The smell of antiseptic and hand sanitizer burned his nostrils, Taichi’s hand pulling his father closer. Beeping machines and the low murmur of conversation hummed in his ears, but his father pulled him along, grip tighter than necessary.

His cheek stung from where his mother had slapped him, tears dried to his cheeks. Flashing red lights followed behind his eyelids, the image of his sister motionless on the ground causing the acidic taste of bile to rise in his throat.

Taichi’s sneakers squeaked against the tile floors, heart thudding in his chest. The hallway was bustling with activity. Doctors scurried from room to room, the machines chiming out in harmony.   Someone was crying behind a closed door; Taichi hoped it wasn’t his mother.

His father’s strides were long, his son’s small legs struggling to keep up. 

At the end of the hallway, his father finally stopped. Taichi gingerly rubbed his wrist, skin pink from his father’s grip. “I need you to listen to me,” his father’s stern voice pulling his son from his thoughts. Crouching down, the older man’s eyes bore into Taichi’s, as if he could make him understand the gravity of the situation with a singular look.

“When we go inside, your sister is going to be on a hospital bed. There may be a lot of wires and tubes, but you cannot touch them. Hikari is very tired, so if she’s sleeping,  you must be very, very quiet. Do you understand?”

His father’s hand gripped Taichi’s shoulders with a ferocity that he had never known. Silently, the young boy nodded, desperate to see his little sister. It was his fault, Taichi reminded himself. It was his fault she was here. 

Knuckles rapping on the door, the pair waited patiently until Taichi’s mother peeked around the frames, dark circles underneath her eyes. 

With a finger pressed to her lips, she ushered them in, shutting the door quietly. “She just fell asleep. The medicine the doctor gave her has kept her up all night.” 

His mother sank into one of the hospital chairs, eyes never leaving her daughter’s face. 

Taichi stood alone at the foot of the bed, knees trembling. 

Dark hair stained the sterilized pillows, blankets swallowing her frail frame. Hikari’s cheeks were flushed, eyelids twitching restlessly. Wires curled around her wrists, disappearing into the folds of her hospital gown. 

A tube, thin and translucent, wrapped around Hikari’s ears, the end trailing into her nose. 

“C’mere, Taichi.” His mother beckoned. The glassy look in her eyes mirrored his own, previous anger wiped clean by exhaustion. With her arms outstretched, Taichi wanted nothing more than to be held. 

Taichi hadn’t realized he had started crying until the tears dripped down his chin, dark spots blooming on his shirt. If only he had known how sick Hikari was; if only he had let her rest.

His mother squeezed his trembling frame, whispering soft assurances in his ears. “She’ll be okay, I promise. I know, it’s scary, but that’s why it’s important that you listen to mommy. The doctor gave Hikari medicine that will help her get better, she just needs to sleep, okay?” 

Buried in the crook of his mother’s neck, Taichi nodded. He did his best to silence his sniffles, terrified of waking his little sister. 

“I’m sorry, mommy.” he muttered, bringing his arms around her torso. 

“I know, baby, “ she assured, petting his hair gently. She pressed a chaste kiss into his hair, giving her son a final hug before pulling away. 

Still, his tears continued to fall, chest heaving with sobs. “I’m so sorry,” Taichi managed, unable to rip his gaze from the hospital bed. 

The machines attached to his sister beeped and hummed, confirming that, at least for the moment, she was stable and alive and here. “Can I see her, mommy? Please?”

Aside from the medical equipment, the room fell silent, Taichi’s sniffles puttering to a stop. 

“If we put you beside her, you have to be extra careful, and watch out for all of the wires. You can’t wake her up, do you understand?” His father stood, a singular eyebrow raised in question. 

“Mmmhmm,” he nodded, arms outstretched. Effortlessly, Taichi’s father lifted him gingerly onto the bed. 

Up close, he could see the dark circles under Hikari’s eyes, the flush that crawled down her neck. The back of his palm rested against her warm cheek, wishing more than anything that her eyes would flutter open, that she would smile and tell him that everything would be okay. 

Her chest rose and fell with every breath, the puff of her cheeks being Taichi’s only reassurance. 

Silently, he watched her sleep, the rattling in her lungs reverberating in the small room, guilt simmering in Taichi’s stomach.  It was all too much, his sister swallowed up by the too-large cotton gown.

He held his sister’s small hand, marveling at just how tiny Hikari really was. 

At the moment, Taichi knew that he would never let his little sister down again. There would never be a next time; instead, Taichi would be vigilant. Sitting next to Hikari on the hospital bed, Taichi swore that nothing else would harm her. He swore to protect her, no matter the cost.

DigiOTPWeek Day 8: Mythology AU

Word Count: 807

Pairing: technically Gatomon/Wizardmon??? But this really features Takenouchi Sora, Tachikawa Mimi, and Yagami Hikari as the Fates, and Inoue Miyako as the Goddess of Love

Miyako entered the workshop and found the sisters hard at work, as ever: Sora amidst her cloud of flax, her hands drawing out lengths of strong cords; Mimi shuttling the threads back and forth to weave intricate, colorful patterns in a new tapestry; Hikari working opposite to smooth out knots and cut loose threads, her eyes closing as she slipped her fingers carefully over the fabric to test its feel.

Sora was the first to glance over at Miyako’s approach. “You’re early.”

Hiding her clenched fingers in the folds of her dress, Miyako knelt on the pouf at their feet. “You know why I am,” she said stiffly, making every effort to be controlled. She wasn’t quite successful.

Hikari opened her eyes. “Is this about the Gatomon?” She set her scissors down, a signal. Both Mimi and Sora ceased their work.

“Of course it is!” Miyako flared up at once. “Do you know how hard I’ve worked on her? It’s taken years for me to find the right Digimon that could make her happy, and now you’ve killed him!” She stopped and sucked in a ragged breath. “Gatomon and Wizardmon were under my protection.”

Sora shook her head, pity in her eyes. “Gatomon wasn’t yours to claim, Miyako. Not yet. She still rightfully belongs to Taichi and Daisuke.”

Miyako said scornfully, “Everyone belongs to Taichi and Daisuke. And if they don’t belong to the Brothers of War, they belong to Yamato and Takeru.”

Hikari folded her hands in her lap. “All Digimon go to Death eventually, Miyako. You know that. Immortality will never be one of their gifts.”

“But it’s not fair! Why does everyone have to be a part of their War? Why can’t Gatomon be spared?”

Cocking her head, Sora considered the goddess. “Gatomon is one Digimon among thousands in the War. Why are you so protective of her? You usually stay away from Vamdemon’s legions.”

Miyako’s countenance gentled. “There’s still a core of purity in Gatomon. She is more than the weapon that Vamdemon has shaped her to be. She could be an actual force for good in the Digital World, if only she were given the chance to try.”

“You wanted Wizardmon as the sheath to her claws,” said Mimi thoughtfully. “I did wonder why you didn’t come to protest when Hikari first cut Wizardmon’s partner from the tapestry. But if that’s what you had in mind…”

Rising to her knees, Miyako asked hopefully, “So you’ll restore Wizardmon’s thread?”

Mimi looked tempted but glanced at the others. “It’s not my decision.”

Hikari was unfortunately already shaking her head. “It’s impossible. Takeru’s already taken Wizardmon to the Underworld.”

To Miyako’s dismay, hot tears began to fill her eyes. She felt instantly ashamed. She should have been used to it by now – and truthfully, she usually was. But while she could accept death of old age or even sickness, she was filled with bitterness when it came prematurely for those special Digimon she considered under her protection, regardless of whoever had already formally claimed them.

Sora knelt beside Miyako and placed a comforting arm around her shoulders. “Gatomon is still young. And not everyone is in the war, you know. There are other Digimon that you could protect. On File Island, maybe.”

Miyako wiped away the last of her tears. “I know that. But you don’t understand – Gatomon – she’s been alone and afraid for so many years. I’m scared that if it takes too much longer - ” She stopped and swallowed, her voice failing her as she imagined how loss and evil would warp the Digimon’s soul.

Mimi, touched by the goddess’ sincerity, looked back at the unfinished tapestry thoughtfully and exchanged meaningful looks with her sisters. After a short, silent deliberation, Mimi said, “There isn’t much we can do about Gatomon. Like we said, Taichi and Daisuke own her for now, and they have important plans for her in the War.”

“And,” Sora added gently, “it was determined at her birth that she should be a roamer. Gatomon must find peace on her own; it can’t be given to her.”

Defeated, Miyako sank back on her heels.

Hikari bent and extracted from Sora’s mass of flax a white cloud, from which Sora began to spin. Hikari closed her eyes for a moment and then intoned, “If Gatomon survives the War… When Taichi is finished with her, he won’t object to your claiming her. Then you can guide her to a new partner who will help her find true happiness.”

“You mean… ”

Miyako’s eyes widened as the flax took shape under Sora’s magic as a single, golden cord - which Mimi added to her tapestry. Gratefully, Miyako bowed deeply three times, once for each sister. “You have my thanks.”

Hikari opened her eyes and smiled faintly. “Don’t worry, Miyako. Everything will be fine.”

All of these can be watched as stand-alones! Though they can also tie into my fic-verse / other A.M.Vs-verse; All of these are fine to watch on their own. The songs here tend to be much calmer than my other 'Verse, but even some of these can be passionately intense (which isn't very bad 'fitting'-wise for even direct Koushiro or Taichi focus specifically!)

"Why are you doing this?"

Because when I was much younger, so many other ships already had LOADS of A.M.V.s and I never found very many for Koushiro or Taishiro / KouTai specifically, which I always found very odd, because they had more than just enough material to make full-length A.M.V.s out of... (and maybe more than you expected!!)

Years later, I'm evening out the playing field for Koushiro!!! (But more seriously, it's because I seriously enjoy making these and if I don't make them the idea is going to repeatedly echo in my head until I finally have it DONE, also as many of these were planned for many months~years and the outlines can take equally as long!!)

I'd be really happy and glad if anyone can come to understand Koushiro, Taichi, or KouTai (/Taishiro) more via these A.M.V.s, including from my own perspectives.

I'd be really happy to hear your thoughts or tags rambles!! Please let me know if something intrigued you or stood out to you, or if you liked a particular edit I made on a scene or sequence of scenes!! A lot of these can be quite hard for me to achieve! Respecful Feedback helps me improve and I may branch out further to other parts of the series + characters later on once I wrap up as many of my currently planned A.M.V.s as possible.
