Choosing the Right Martial Arts School: Essential Tips for Surrey and Delta Residents
If you’re looking to join a martial arts school in Surrey or Delta, BC, choosing the right one is crucial. Whether you're interested in Taekwondo, karate, or mixed martial arts, finding a school that aligns with your goals and values can shape your experience and growth in the martial arts world. Here’s a complete guide to help you make an informed decision and kickstart your martial arts journey!
1. Qualified and Certified Instructors
Look for martial arts schools in Surrey or Delta with certified instructors who have real-world experience in Taekwondo, karate, or mixed martial arts. Qualified instructors can provide the best learning experience, especially for beginners. Many top schools have instructors certified by recognized organizations like Taekwondo Canada, ensuring you’re learning from trusted professionals.
2. A Positive and Supportive Learning Environment
The best martial arts schools offer a welcoming and supportive environment that motivates students. Schools with a strong community atmosphere will make learning fun and engaging. Whether it's Taekwondo or karate classes, a trial session can give you insights into the school culture and whether it’s the right fit for you.
3. Variety of Classes to Meet Your Needs
Choose a martial arts school that offers classes for all levels, from beginners to advanced students. Look for options like Taekwondo classes, karate martial arts, or mixed martial arts tailored to your age and skill level. Many schools in Surrey and Delta cater to all ages, offering family classes, kids’ martial arts programs, and adult classes.
4. Convenient Location and Accessible Facilities
Finding a school close to home or work can make it easier to attend classes regularly. For instance, martial arts schools in Surrey, BC, Delta, BC, or North Delta can make classes more convenient to reach. Check out schools like Taekwondo Delta Club or Martial Arts Surrey BC Canada to see if they meet your needs.
5. Emphasis on Discipline and Personal Growth
Martial arts training emphasizes physical fitness and promotes life skills like discipline, respect, and personal growth. The best schools will focus on helping you develop both mental and physical strength. Ask instructors how they incorporate values like perseverance and self-control into their classes.
6. Reputation of the Martial Arts School
A school’s reputation can tell you a lot about the quality of instruction. Look for reviews from current or former students to get an idea of the school’s strengths. Martial arts schools with a solid reputation for Taekwondo classes or mixed martial arts gyms are likely to offer well-structured programs and a supportive learning environment.
7. Safety and Cleanliness of Facilities
A safe training environment is essential. Make sure the school has clean, well-maintained facilities and follows safety protocols, especially for contact-based martial arts like karate or mixed martial arts. Quality schools invest in high-standard equipment, such as mats and protective gear, to ensure students' safety.
Conclusion: Start Your Martial Arts Journey in Surrey or Delta!
Choosing the right martial arts school is key to achieving your personal and fitness goals. Whether you’re interested in Taekwondo Canada, mixed martial arts, or karate, look for schools in Surrey and Delta that prioritize qualified instruction, positive learning environments, and personal growth.

So as you’ve noticed I’ve been missing for a long time. I got a lateral release surgery done to my right knee and afterwards my leg atrophied. I’ve spent the better part of 2.5 years working on rebuilding my strength. I’m at about 80% now.
The goal was to get good enough to test for my fourth degree, and that was achieved last month! So now it’s to keep working on the strength and hopefully get into the competitive sphere again :)

2024 BL/GL/QL Round-Up Post
Since I did this last year, I thought for posterity I'd post another reflection on everything I watched that completed in 2024. For me, that means anything that started in 2023 but the last episode was in 2024 is on this list, but anything that was still be airing after 31 December 2024 11:59 my time (EST) is not on this list, even if the bulk of the show did air in 2024.
A few stats:
[The image is TL;DR for what follows lol]
I watched ~150 discrete pieces of new QL content in 2024 (series/films) that I tracked [It gets complicated with specials and split seasons but I did my best to be consistent]; plus 10 things that I would consider "adjacent". For contrast, I listed 110 pieces of discrete content in 2023; that's a 45% increase year over year!
This clocked in at an est. 900 hours of new BL/GL and adjacent content (up from ~600 in 2023--which also tells us that the content I tracked was a little longer overall because that's a full 50% increase in terms of hours spent).
The new content I watched came from 9 different countries [same as 2023]: (Cambodia [1], Philippines [2, down from 3], Hong Kong [1], Japan [32, up from 18 in 2023], Korea [20; was 19], Myanmar [2, up from 1], Taiwan [12, up from 6], Thailand [75; up from 56], Vietnam [4, down from 7]), China [5], and then 3 joint effort productions from Thailand/Korea [2] and Thailand/Taiwan [1]
This means just under ~47% of the content I watched on this list is from Thailand [close to the 50% in 2023]
So many more shows had multiple or varied distributions this year, but like last year ~85% of my content was on 3 platforms: YouTube [38%; down from 40%], GaGaOoLaLa [30%; up from 23%] and iQIYI [17%; down from 21%] Note: I'm in Canada and my access routes are sometimes affected by that.
As unbelievable as it sounds with all that, I did actually drop shows this year! I dropped 9 shows, which is I think more than I've dropped in my entire previous 20+ years watching queer asian media combined (that might be an exaggeration but I do really hate dropping shows); 4 Thai, 3 Filipino, 1 Taiwanese and 1 Japanese (listed at the very bottom of this post if you want to be messy). I didn't track any dropped shows in 2023.
And if you're wondering how many shows there are in the world in total, I am aware of an additional 11 shows I just did not have time to even start (2 from Cambodia, 4 from the Philippines, 3 from Thailand, and 1 each from Korea and Myanmar). That does not include the vertical short reels that I didn't track this year--see @ellsieee 's tracking post for these--as well as several GL shorts from JPC media YouTube channel and Sastra film app YouTube channel that I just have not had time to try or even keep track of, though I do peek in on them to see if there's anything that looks particularly good, and I do always link these folks in my GL round-ups.
All of this doesn't include re-watches or catching up on old shows, or non-QL queer media, or non-queer media (the hets sometimes do deserve rights); but does include films as well as shows.
I hope you all appreciate that with this much content, and with my general brand of being unable to make decisions, I really struggled to narrow down a top 10 list. What follows is the best I could do lol
Top 25 QLs I'd Recommend From This Year:
[Links are self-indulgently to what I thought was the most relevant post I'd made this year relevant to that series/media, mostly spoiler-free pitches]
She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat S2 (Tsukutabe) [GL]
Love in the Big City
Love For Love's Sake
Tadaima Okaeri [anime]
Ossan no pantsu ga nandatte ii janai ka (Oppan)
Marahuyo Project
Knock Knock Boys
Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo
Love is Like a Poison (Doku koi)
Ossan's Love Returns
Twilight out of Focus [anime]
At 25:00 in Akasaka
Cooking Crush
Cherry Magic [anime]
Cherry Magic Thailand
Takara no Vidro
Soul Sisters / Twin Rabbits [GL]
Perfect Propose
Unknown the series
Paradise of Thorns [film]
Blue Canvas of Youthful Days
The Secret of Us [GL]
Mr Mitsuya's Planned Feeding (Mitsuya-Sensei)
The Time of Fever
A Man Who Defies the World of BL S3
I tried to put these in some kind of order but honestly if you asked me to rank them the numbering would change all the time and I would combust. The ones I liked best are closer to the top of this list. I also debated back and forth on whether Paradise of Thorns counts as QL so many times. But in the end I decided the main character was queer and queer romance of a sort was at the heart of the drama, so I've left it in this list even though technically it should probably sit with the 'adjacent's.
Worth noting that though only ~20% of the content I watched was from Japan, ~45% of my favourites were from Japan.
+5 notable pulp offerings worth mentioning:
Bagan Beginning (Myanmar)
City of Stars (Thailand)
Gym Affairs (China)
To the Ex Who Hated Me (Korea, GL)
Under the Oak Tree (Vietnam)
I think I'll do a top 10 GL post separately since we had enough content to warrant a top 10 (yay!) but this is already long enough. I just want to take a second to acknowledge that this year was so much better than in 2023 when I didn't feel like I could recommend any of the new GL shows. Thank you content creators for better and more GL in 2024, please keep that energy for 2025!
Bonus: Not a QL but worth calling out:
How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (Thai film)
I saw both this and Paradise of Thorns in theatres during the Toronto International Film Festival and they were both so powerful! Extremely different tones but they surprisingly hit on similar themes, and very beautifully filmed. HTMMBGD was a complicated film filled with very rounded and complex characters, and I still think about it all the time. Very excited for more folks to have access to both of these soon.
Sidenote: The fact that I watched 45% more shows in 2024 than I did in 2023 and still managed to keep my rec list to 30 (*cough1cough*) does seem to back up the general feeling that though we had more content, we didn't have a proportional rise in good content. I do want to crunch those numbers in another post.
Double Plus Bonus: Best Older QL Content I watched for the first time in 2024:
Life as a Girl / Joshi-teki Seikatsu (Japan, 2018; I'm so sad I missed out on this one for so long due to misinfo, it is fantastic! Thanks to @so-much-yet-to-learn for helping propel me to this one)
Iron Ladies (Thailand, 2000; thank you for the rec, @happypotato48)
Nacchan's Secret / Himitsu no Nacchan (Japan, 2023; thank you @furritsubs for making this watch possible)
Can I Buy Your Love From a Vending Machine / Sono Koi, Jihanki de Kaemasuka? (Japan, 2023; thanks to @nicks-den for making this watch possible)
I Fell In Love with the Villainness (Japan, 2023; watched because of a convo with @pilanthitasanilaphat)
Doi Boy (Thailand, 2023; this one I had on my list and just had to work up the energy to watch, but it was a beautiful film and I'm glad I did)
BL Metamorphosis (Japan, 2022; another thank you to @furritsubs)
Dear Dad (India, 2016; thanks to @neuroticbookworm for the rec!)
Salty Blue / Kakenuketara, Umi (Japan, 2023, thank you again @nicks-den!)
[I can't believe I forgot this at first] The Miracle of Teddy Bear (Thailand, 2022, thanks for going on that journey and writing great meta with me and for calling me out for forgetting @lurkingshan!)
There is so much good content in the world and despite my best efforts I haven't seen everything! So grateful to the fansubbers and people who write about past shows so that those of us who missed them the first time still get a chance to see them.
In terms of my output based on all this input, I continued not lurking this year, and have enjoyed it very much; see my Top 10 posts from 2024 here as well as the content I linked in my recommended shows above--going through the process of adding those links really highlighted to me how much more I've written this year, and how much more motivated I am to write about shows I love. It's no surprise I had dedicated posts for most of my top shows! To highlight a few specific projects this year that I'm proud of, I participated in the Love in the Big City Book Club read and watch-alongs organized by @lurkingshan, which was such a fun project that I am grateful for, and I started my GL Odds and Ends posts (tagged with #gl recs) that I am still feeling out but am really enjoying seeing the impact whenever someone watches a show because they found out about it through one of my posts. I also made an appearance on several episodes of @the-conversation-pod and had an incredible time trying out different things in a quarterly 'Dispatch' and having some really rich conversations with @bengiyo and @shortpplfedup. I love this corner of tumblr that we've carved out for ourselves as a QL watching community, and I just want to say to everyone I've interacted with in 2024: Thank you, and wish good things for you all in 2025!
Full list of 2024 shows under the cut for anyone curious! [Mostly in order it completed but may be slightly off--if a special aired immediately after the final episode I only list them as one thing and count the airing of the special as the end date, for example].

Blurb -
Hi, I’m the creator. I’m 15 (going into 10th grade) and am from BC, Canada. Most of my hobbies are art-related (drawing, origami, painting, crafting, crochet) but I also write, play piano (trying to get back into ut tbh), and do/have done martial arts (taekwondo, capoeira, kickboxing, trying to get into Krav Maga and BJJ).
My current fandoms are DC, BSD, Arcane, and ATSV, but I’ve been in a ton of others and might post art from those as well.
Most of my art revolves around my OC’s and their lives as well as concept designs for other characters. I’m trying to get back into art after over a year of burnout and art block so uploads may be infrequent.
As for my goals in terms of art, I want to start doing commission work and finally make a comic but I don’t think I’m at the right level for either of those yet so my goal rn is just improving (mostly anatomy, hands, backgrounds, and solidifying a style).

Dr Cassandra Joseph led the Otago study that unexpectedly revealed that tomboyism can be associated with trauma.
‘Tomboyism’ is often fondly celebrated by society as an accepted form of gender nonconformity but is not commonly associated with trauma.
However, that is the unexpected finding from a new University of Otago, Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka study published in the Journal of Gender Studies.
When Otago PhD graduate Cassandra Joseph set out to interview tomboys from a range of cultures about their experiences growing up, neither she nor the study participants anticipated the trauma and distress they had sometimes faced would feature strongly in their conversations.
“The media often paints tomboyism to be a carefree experience, with tomboys being heralded as ‘rebels’,” she says.
“Nobody associates tomboys with trauma.”
Dr Joseph interviewed 11 assigned-female-at-birth (AFAB) tomboys aged between ages 24 – 42 of various ethnicities and a range of gender identities from Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Singapore and the United States.
As interviews progressed, it became clear that for study participants there was often a sense of unhealed trauma that came with discussing past or present tomboyism.
Some identified as tomboys as a form of self-preservation, while others were labelled with the term and experienced bullying or ostracisation.
One participant from Singapore described how in secondary school, male students would pull her skirt and say she looked ‘like a boy’, and the bullying became so bad she took up taekwondo to feel safe.
Another participant spoke of adopting a tomboy persona because her religious upbringing had taught her that within the church, women were deemed sinful by being desirable to men.
When she was 10 years old, two men attempted to assault her. By appearing as a tomboy, she felt she would be less desirable to men and therefore safer.
A transgender study participant noted the male privilege and increased sense of personal safety he experienced when he became male-passing - a sense of ‘brute strength’ that other participants also identified helped them feel safe.
The study suggests that in such cases, tomboyism has been used as a kind of self-preservation from “the leering eyes of the patriarchy”.
“While this is not the case for all tomboys, it is rather telling that AFAB people have to navigate gender norms to embody gender traits that make them feel safe,” Dr Joseph says.
For many of the participants, once they reached puberty they felt expected to conform to feminine conventions. Many struggled to reconcile their inherent tomboy nature and the expectations of society, resulting in a feeling of ‘gender melancholia’.
“To grow up feeling a sense of freedom that aligns with one’s tomboy identity only to have that stripped away during puberty and post-puberty is a trauma that has been previously unrecognised when it comes to the tomboy narrative,” Dr Joseph says.
She hopes the study might encourage the public to think critically about gender and to realise that the socially imposed binary of masculine/ feminine is more fluid than people might think.
“We also have a responsibility of care towards anyone who challenges our preconceived notions of gender.”
While the concept of tomboyism itself originated in the 16th century and was first used to describe unruly boys, over the years the term tomboy has “shapeshifted” and is bound to do so again in future, Dr Joseph says.
“There is a growing vocabulary around gender-nonconformity, and tomboyism has historically served as a stepping stone into more contemporary discussions on gender and sexuality.
“I think the concept of tomboyism will continue to remain a starting platform in the discussion of gender nonconformity, even if the term ‘tomboy’ isn’t as actively used in some contexts.”

15 Questions for 15 Mutuals
Thank you, @the12thnightproject, for tagging me in this post. Always great to get to know mutuals a bit more. 1. Were you named after anyone?
Nah, fam. But, there were apparently “talks” of naming me after Zinedine Zidane. Cool name, but thankfully they chose something else.
2. When was the last time you cried?
Maybe a month ago after watching a Disney Movie. I forgot which one though but sometimes they hit hard when you least suspect it.
3. Do you have kids?
No.
4. Do you use sarcasm?
Sarcasm? Pfft. Never...nah...yes.
5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?
Their overall build, physique, and face. I’m not too good with names, but I am a faces person.
6. What’s your eye color?
Boring Brown.
7. Scary movies or happy endings?
Happy Endings, but I do enjoy a good scary movie or story.
8. Any special talents?
Yep. The “fighting” part of my username isn’t too far off. I practiced and still train in various different martial arts, including Shito-Ryu Karate, WT Taekwondo, Muay Thai, Japanese Jujutsu, Filipino Eskrima and Dirty Boxing, Judo, and, most notably, Capoeira. While I don’t train to fight in a ring or cage, I feel like I could put up a fight should I need to.
9. Where were you born?
Approximately somewhere in North America. I’ll give you a hint—it’s not Canada.
10. What are your hobbies?
Other than training martial arts, I both draw and write. Am I any good at them? That’s for you and the audience to decide.
11. Have any pets?
Just a stubborn pup who once stole an entire stick of butter, buried it, returned to it, and ate it.
12. What sports do you/have played?
I played soccer when I was in Elementary school and played Percussion in Marching Band for 6 years. And then I started training martial arts I referred to in Question 8.
13. How tall are you?
Approximately one Riddle Rosehearts tall.
14. Favorite subject at school?
Microbiology, which is also coincidentally my major. Often we overlook the omnipresent microbes that can affect our daily lives. And, even when we study them, a majority of people are only fascinated by the extremely deadly stuff (typhoid, cholera, botulism, etc.) whereas our normal human microbiome can affect our way of living just as significantly.
15. Dream job?
No idea.
Okay, 15 tags for 15 mutuals...
As always said in previous posts from others, don’t feel pressured to answer these. That being said, feel free to tag yourselves in. I don’t have a lot of mutuals (and a few of mine already were tagged).
Okay, let’s see...
@ikemen-writer @lovely-bubb1es @silvioscape @0-n-1-c-h-4-n
....and about 11 more who wanna play. Thanks for reading.

Age 3-5 . My aunt pulled my hair and dragged me she blamed me for her sons bleeding forehead since it was just us playing together.
Around the same age, my mom always leaves me to work in the city the entire day, and if I be left to my aunt who has a methhead of a husband. I dont think my brain wants to remember being touched by him in any way. Still around the same age, since it's only my mom and I living together, someone tried to rape her by climbing the side of the house and into the ceiling. He dropped a knife between my mom and I, and I still remember my moms screams during that night, but I couldn't understand what was going on.
I witnessed my dad beating up my mom out of jealousy and suspicion. He locked her up in the room after she cried and screamed, and I was just sitting by the door trying to see in between the gaps at the bottom of the door.
I remember my mom drinking so many bottles of beer as she tried to make rugs while I played with the dropped leftover clothes underneath her.
Age 5-9,parents left me to work abroad. When theres any family related events/ holidaysI just feel confused, jealous and empty ...
Grandma would kick me out of the house. Throw my clothes outisde most of the times its at night. Growing up, Im really scared of the dark, especially bout the guy who's crazy but roaming freely in our neighborhood. And all the myths and urban legends of creatures. But I used to sleep outside till morning in my pile of clothes hiding between the little palm trees, crying till I fell asleep. She also tells me how unlucky of her to be taking care of me instead of my cousin from a different province since she's well-behaved.
Around this time, I'd be called names by my cousins and teased by my unlce/aunts bout my parents having another family. that's why they're gone, thats why they left me. They enjoyed seeing me cry.
Grandma got breast cancer. She didn't wanna see me. Maybe she was trying to protect me or just dont wanna see me. My relatives would blame me for it either jokingly or srsly that I was the cause.
She died, and my aunts started fighting/debating who would take me.
Around this age (7-8), I discovered I was adopted. Locked myself in the room, screaming and crying my eyes out. My cousin justified what him and his mom said by saying "Its true. She was picked out of trash"
9-14,Close to daily beatings from my dad. He had used 4 belts(he hit me so hard they snap, so he gets a new one),sticks, bamboo, slippers, and points machete in my face.he hits me both side of the belt but most of the time its the metal head and it would lodged into my skin, but worse thab this is the things hed tell me whike beating me up. To this day it rings in my head randomly and subconsciously. Being beaten almost every day/week. Telling me to just die how he wish I was dead, that Im a misfortune I only bring shame and hard life into the family. That if it wasnt for my mom Id be dead by his hands or not be adopted. I'd go to school with bruises and cuts while also having stress from school for being an officer in different fields. One time, I got so stressed bout school that I wrapped a thick rope around my neck while still being in school. (CAT officers have their own headquarters) so I went to the armoury and just tried to die.
I was groomed.
My uncle then tried to rape me. Parwnts signed me up for taekwondo so I learn self-defense.
Taekwondo became my lifeline,my dream. TIll I tied the belt so many times around my neck till I had blurry vision and suffocating. They dont want to support me cause they were scared I'd break my bone? Or just a hassle.
Ran away from the house, left a note saying "fuck u god" cried under a tree. Dad found me and gave me the beating performance of his life.
I looked for a sense of belongingness and comfort from having alot of friends and doing sports. Usually way older than me. I welcomed all. Drug addicts,ex-con,prostitutes,athletes,normal ppl, etc.
15-Present
Cultured shock in Canada. The silence was deafening. The voices were deafening. Lonely, lost, depressed.
Broke up with the married groomer. Even deeper depression along with family problems and myself. My dad was suicidal. My mom was working 2-3 jobs. Family finally together but a very big mess.
Finally, I muster up the courage to ask for help twice, get ignored, or turned down.
Got addicted to dota. Skipped so many classes . Dont give a fuck . Ruined my future. Found a (ex)bf ,mentally and emotionally abusing me.break and make up routine.
Told my friend goodbyes. Drank a whole bottle of advil. Took a shower. Friend callled police. Police arrived. I said it was a prank. Next day I keep coughing and throwing up blood whislt having high high fever. 4 days like this. Dealt everything alone, of course. To this day I still dont know how I fucking got through it.
Got a job he had access to everything. Got financially wrecked by his gambling and spending habits. Cheated.
More more family shit. Shit catching up to me. Self worth depleting. Ptsd. Anger issues, etc.
