So…. I like A Shoulder To Cry On. I muted the second episode, so I have no idea if the strange connection between the music and the scenes still happened in the second episode, but I like the way Tae Hyun unknowingly (maybe knowingly) pushes Da Yeol to reflect on his life and decisions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Tae Hyun showed surprise about how serious Da Yeol takes his sport, he phrased the question really well. Tae Hyun said he didn’t realize Da Yeol “liked [it] that much” which made the archer examine the question. Da Yeol never stated he “liked” archery. He merely noted he wouldn't be able to compete due to Tae Hyun's actions.
So does he like it? Does he even like what he dedicates all of his time to. It was a simple statement of shock, but it cuts at something much deeper because what is Tae Hyun apologizing for? Tarnishing Da Yeol's reputation? Making the teachers believe Da Yeol could possibly be gay? Ruining Da Yeol's happiness? The situation is messed up, but what does he want Tae Hyun to say sorry for? He doesn't even like archery, so really, what is Tae Hyun apologizing for?
This is what I like about this story the most in episode two - the way these two interact and push each other to reevaluate the lives they have been living. Why do they do the things they do? Why do they act the way they act? Tae Hyun is intentionally muting his emotions, but has Da Yeol just never questioned anything in his life? Has he not been given the privilege of feeling? Emotions for both boys are troublesome, and I'm excited to see them grapple with all they haven't been allowed to feel or haven't wanted to feel.

Two years apart and TaeHyun knows he cares but he still doesn't know how describe how he feels and two years on and DaYeol has accepted that he can and he will wait that he will love and he will let TaeHyun do what he needs to get to the point that he can love but he will do it with him, there for him, waiting while knowing him and waiting for him and not just waiting for anything.
DaYeol knows who he loves and he has chosen that love in the end with patience and care and tenderness and TaeHyun knows he needs DaYeol in his life and he might not be able to voice why but he can try and he will try and he is finally asking for what he truly wants.
Patience. Love. Space in his life. A place in his heart.
And, in return, a place held in his heart as he heals and finds the space for him there in return. (He has the space already, he loves DaYeol so much, but he isn't ready.)

Something about how Tae Hyun is just constantly bothering the world around him, be it Da Yeol's arrow feathers, Da Yeol's arrows, tree branches, baseball bats, baseballs, Da Yeol himself and I could go on - and the contrast with Da Yeol who tries to remake the infirmary bed perfectly after he's messed it up, who tries to interfere with the world and with his own life as little as possible
Something about the way Tae Hyun smiles at the end of episode 1 when Da Yeol is looking for his lucky charm in Tae Hyun's apartment, being disruptive for the first time
Something about how only Da Yeol seems to keep Tae Hyun's focus and something about how Tae Hyun is the only thing capable of distracting Da Yeol

A SHOULDER TO CRY ON
Finale
Korean BLs really excel.
Sadly, A Shoulder to Cry On was much too short, but for excellence in depicting a beautiful love story—kudos!
My only criticism would be that I would have appreciated being let in, a little more, on the characters motivations and the other characters could have been fleshed out a bit more.
If Korean BLs were only as long as their regular KDramas, that would really be a wondrous thing.
********************
THE ENDING…
…And they eventually consummated their relationship, when we weren’t watching, and lived happily ever after…THEREI FIXED IT!
PS I WAS KINDA HOPING THERE WERE SEX TOYS IN TAE HYUN’S BLACK BAG!

Why do you keep talking to me, bothering me, and pretending to be close to me? I already told you. It's because you're cute. A SHOULDER TO CRY ON Episode 1

I’m going to say it. A shoulder to cry on is really up there as one of my Fav BL. Not just year but of all. We don’t always need any NC scenes. Here it Wasn’t necessary to.
Just a good, well writtenand acted story was what was perfect about this. Korean BL have really pulled it out the bag recently as enjoying daingSim and Unintentional love story
(but also side eye future productions they have decided to Remove the BL central aspects) 👀
Anon, I did not like how it began, but I think if this had been a Japanese production, it would have leaned more into a D/s dynamic, so I recognize that's what I feel was lacking in the beginning.

But I don't even need characters to be in the same room to yell "GAY!" (looking at you, Dome x Khatha!), so no kissing wasn't an issue for me. I've seen several people mention that a strong possibility for no kissing in this series is because both actors are from the same group, and people are already outlandish when it comes to shipping real people.
So even without a kiss, I enjoyed A Shoulder to Cry on, mainly because I was invested in the side characters, much like this guy.
Tumblr media
I wanted him to be an angle in a non-existent love triangle. I wanted him to have more plot. I wanted him to have his own love story. I WANTED MORE! He was fascinating. Even the bully, who I wanted someone to punch, was interesting because it seemed like he, too, liked Tae Hyun, but thought Tae Hyun was incapable of loving someone back. And I greatly enjoyed Tae Hyun's friends because they easily became Da Yeol's friends.
Tumblr media
I liked that both of them were a shoulder for the other to cry on
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that both clearly desired the other even in the tiniest of moments
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, it was good, and it gave me a nice companion to "be brave about it" and "The love I have for you, doesn't it give you courage? Courage to love a man like me?"
