A Shadowy Beginning

The trapped players were all currently in their rooms- or a pillow fort in Kinger's case- either resting after the long, arduous adventure they had that day or giving themselves time alone. Caine, on the other hand, was flitting around the out of bounds area of the game as he was making preparations for the next day's adventure. He was so busy that he hadn't noticed a bit of code making its way out of the out of bounds area.

The code moved through the circus tent's code as it was able to make its way down into the cellar where it knew it could find plenty of mistakes that it could make its own.

The string of code moved around the pitch dark pit that was full of colorful eyes that had no idea of what was about to come. It could just hear their codes crying out for their non-existent exit or different names of current of past circus members but it all sounded like gibberish. It didn't matter, none of these things mattered.

The code began to slither its way out of the tent's code and slipped inside of one of the abstracted beings' code, forcing it to shift and change to its own so it could be a bit more whole even if it could never be finished.

The abstraction sounded like they were screaming in pain as they felt their code being forcibly taken over and partially rewritten. They could feel themselves no longer being who they once were and their memories being scrambled, shoved back.

It took some time but the code was able to force the abstraction to change from a bodiless creature with no mind to become a body all for itself. It looked like a shadow version of Caine in possible way except it lacked the bright colors that practically defined the circus' ringmaster. But if someone were to see him in the dead of night where color was already drained, it'd be extremely hard to tell the actual difference.

The newly formed Shadow Caine moved around a bit to check how easy it would be to move around before noticing how a couple colorful eyes appeared on his body and frowned, "Now then, that simply will not do." He clicked his tongue as he had his code restrict and basically strangle the eyes into vanishing with an audible pop sound, making the nearby abstractions move away as if in fear.

The physical shadow simply patted himself off before flying up and out of the cellar, he had a few circus members to meet before the true Caine left the out of bounds area to start a new day.

A/N: I was gonna include how Shadow!Caine interacts with the characters but strangely- I feel like this is a good stopping point for this story. If you guys, wanna see more of Shadow!Caine, I'll happily take requests for him (or anything else)

I hate Alastor because he comes off as an edgelord and he has DIFFERENT SHADES OF RED TO THE POINT HE BLENDS IN THE BACKGROUND. Also again with Vivienne Medrano coddling her precious babies who are actually terrible people who do terrible things to people who didn't do anything wrong. It's genuinely annoying.

🌊WELCOME TO THE DEPTHS OF THE LOST CITY OF ATLANTIS!...🌊

WHAT IS THIS AU ALL ABOUT?

So, it's a TADC AU where C&A is a research team that aims to find the lost world of Atlantis, with some VERY sketchy stuff happening along the way. Pomni, who just got recruited into the team, goes off alongside Ragatha, Jax, Gangle, Zooble, and Kinger to adventure in the depths of the seas! Only to eventually end up STUCK in Atlantis after a total collision force with its underwater caverns, with no way to get back up without running out of oxygen. Caine (Atlantis' guardian) was originally SUPPOSED to have a good eye on the city he was meant to protect... only to have no other option but to send off the crew into small expeditions in hopes of getting them out one day

Each of the expeditions Caine puts them is an ocean-version of the already existing canon adventures, for example;

The Candy Kingdom from episode 2 is a coral reef, the haunted mansion from episode 3 is a sunken ship, and Spudsy's from episode 4 is a seafood restaurant instead of a fast-food one!

By the way, forgot to mention! The only canon ship on this AU is Kinger x Queenie, and yet it DOESN'T MEAN that whatever ships that I or even YOU do are not welcome. I'm a multishipper so- GO COMPLETELY WILD WITH IT, I WANNA SEE SHIP ART FROM LEFT AND RIGHT! As long as it's nothing between Pomni and Kinger... yuck.

A SWEETTOOTH ONESHOT W/ SHADOW!CAINE

The circus members gathered to await Caine to announce their daily adventure. They made idle chit chat fully unaware of the being luring in the shadows, watching.

Shadow made sure to peak subtly and silently, going completely unnoticed as he focused on one circus member in particular. The red headed ragdoll, Ragatha. Her cheerful smile and sparkling eye make his heart skip a beat. She always seemed so full of life and energy, it made him almost wish he could go on adventures too.

Her braided yarn hair looked soft to the touch, I often wondered what it would be like to have it run between his fingers. He was even envious of her patchwork dress, as it got to hug her frame every second of every day. He left out a quiet, lovesick sigh. He knew he could never tell her, but it was nice to think about what it would be like to hold her...to kiss her...to tell her how much he-

"Morning!" Caine popped into existence next to his shaded kin.

Shadow completely dispersed for a second, becoming nothing but black smoke that clung to the walls, then reformed with a glare aimed directly at Caine.

"What are you up to on this fine day?" Caine asked with a smile.

"Nothing. [%$!#] off." Shadow grumbled.

Caine looked over at his circus members in the distance. Then back at Shadow. "Wait...were you spying again? You know you could just ask me what adventure I have planned. I don't mind telling you."

"This isn't about you." Shadow noticed some of the circus members looking his way and he moved out of sight. "Now go away. You're too loud."

Caine narrowed his eyes in suspicion. "If it's not me...what is it? Hm? You jealous my cast gets to go on adventures?"

Shadow felt heated by Caine's incessant questions. "No! I don't give a flying [%$!#] about your adventures!"

"Alright, then WHO is it? Who are you watching so obsessively?"

"I'm not obsessed!"

"Shadow, this is the third time this week alone I've caught you snooping. Come on, you can tell me."

"The [%$!#] I can. You'll just announce it to the whole circus!"

"I will not! In fact, I don't want you to tell me. I'll just guess." Caine smirked.

"You really don't listen when people tell you to go away...and you wonder why no one likes you." Shadow didn't bother disappearing. caine would just follow him if he did. At least here he could occasionally glance at Ragatha.

"No need to make this personal." Caine cleared his voice. "Now, I am convinced this is about a particular person. You have a crush."

Shadow was no better at hiding his emotions than Caine. "Wha-!? No!"

"Uh-huh, sure you don't. Is it Pomni? Because I hate to break it to you, she's called for."

"Eugh! NO! That ball of anxiety in a jester hat is all yours, you freak."

Caine deadpanned. "You should really look in a mirror sometime. Not Pomni. That's a relief. Jax?"

"No! None of them! I wouldn't tell you even if you guessed correctly."

"Ah-ha! So there is a correct answer!"

"[%$!#]" Shadow swore under his breath.

"Okay, it's got to be Gangle. I didn't think someone as sweet as her would be your type, but-"

"Will you knock it off already!? God! Fine! IT'S RAGATHA!" He said so loud, it echoed through the circus. The cast members that had been talking all stopped to look around for the source. Shadow and Caine were out of sight where they were. Shadow lowered his voice before continuing. "There. Now can you [%$!#] off already!? Just leaving me alone!"

"Ragatha?? Wow, that's an even bigger surprise than Gangle. Come on, Shadow, you shouldn't be ashamed! Ragatha is wonderful! I could introduce you."

"NO! No! Absolutely not! She isn't getting wind of ANY of this! Understand!?" Shadow blushed heavily in his flustered panic.

Caine sighed dramatically. "Fiiiiiiine. Mum's the word. Promise. Cross my code and hope to fly!"

"....that's not how- whatever." Shadow pinched the top of his bottom teeth in exasperation. "Just don't tell her. Seriously. It's...better if she doesn't know."

"But why? I bet she'd love to go on a double date with you and me and Pomni. They're best friends, you know. And even if she wasn't interested, she'd be nice about it. Ragatha is a very kind person."

Shadow was silent for a moment. "It's not the rejection...it's the disgust."

"What do you mean?"

"LOOK AT US!!" Shadow snapped. "You got lucky finding someone so pathetically desperate, they accepted affection from the likes of us. Ragatha would never."

Caine was taken aback, then angry. "There's no need to insult Pomni. Her interest sees past this." He gestures to himself. "It's not about the avatar, it's about the person behind it."

"We aren't people, Caine. We're.... we're nothing but code. And I'm even less than that. I'm not even rendered." Shadow looked at his inky black hands.

"Don't be so quick to judge how she'd react, Shadow. I had the same fears confessing to Pomni. How could she love an AI like me? And yet, here we are. It wasn't out of desperation. It was out of mutual respect and longing for connection. If you respect Ragatha, you'll tell her. Creeping in the shadows will get you nowhere."

Shadow went quiet again. His eyes falling on Ragatha. His heart ached to tell her, but it ached even more out of fear. "Not...yet. I can't."

Caine nodded. "It takes time, but don't wait too long. You know I can't keep my mouth shut forever." He winked and teleported to the circus members to introduce the adventure.

With everyone properly distracted, Shadow could look fully again and admire Ragatha from afar. His daydream of her smile being aimed at him was interrupted by the intrusive thought of her being angry and insulted that he dare say anything to her. He tried to shake it, but thinking about confessing made fear grip his heart. She'd never accept him. She'd never want him. He would forever belong to the shadows. Alone.

Jax wandered the halls, feeling a bit anxious for some reason. His ears wouldn't stop twitching and it felt like something was terribly off. Usually he wouldn't give a crap and let everyone else deal with it unless he decided it would be fun to watch.

But this? This felt incredibly different, his fur had pricked up and wouldn't go back down. Nothing about how he felt was normal- not even in a bizarre digital circus like this.

His ears flicked as he could hear muffled sobbing from a familiar pillow fort. He moved towards the fort to check on the old chess piece. He only made it a few steps before suddenly stopping, his eyes widening and his ears perked high up as he watched the pillows begin to glitch and darkened.

He backed away slowly, "Heeey, Caaaaine!" He called out in a slight panic, his eyes refusing to look away as the glitching worsened and the sobbing suddenly stopped as a large abstraction broke through the pillows, "CAINE! C'MON ON OUT!" He yelled out as he took off running.

Jax ran into the hallway with all the bedrooms while messing with his keyring as quick as possible and kicking on a couple of doors to get Gangle and Ragatha out so they could be distract the abstracted Kinger as he slipped inside of Kaufmo's old room, closing the door as quick as possible.

He could hear the two girls yelling as they tried to get away only crashes and slams to be heard a bit later. He stayed near the door in complete silence as he waited for the stomping of the abstraction to go quiet before he slid down the wall, panting hard. He gripped his overalls as he tried his best to calm down, he couldn't be so unnerved like this...

"Jax?"

A voice made his ears perk up and twitch around widely- he knew that voice but he was supposed to be in the cellar.

"Come on, buddy! It's me, you just gotta look up!" The goofy voice gave a chuckle as a yellow gloved hand gently tilted the rabbit's chin to look at who was speaking.

Jax, for the first time in a long time, felt tears in his eyes, "K-Kaufy-?" He stared at the jolly looking expression that he fell in love with before. Only to realize the clown was just a solid shadowy mass with a few colorful eyes all over, "GET AWAY!" He shoved him away hard before crawling away, his eyes wide and terrified.

The shadowy Kaufmo frowned at that sadly, "Jax..." He mumbled as he approached him cautiously, "I always thought you were braver than that..." He sighed.

"I know Kaufmo. He doesn't look like... whatever you are." The rabbit snarled, trying not to appear so scared like he was feeling. His breathing rate was going up but he tried to keep it as even as possible.

"Bun Bun..." The clown knelt down in front of him- that nickname... only Kaufmo knew of that pet name... He froze in his spot, letting the shadow tilt his face towards him and kiss his forehead, "I merely look like this because I was let out temporarily." He explained, his voice becoming husky, his finger moving from his chin to his neck gently.

Jax felt himself shiver in unwanted pleasure, "T-Temporarily...?" He questioned, his voice coming out needier than he wanted. This couldn't be the real Kaufmo, his clown had been abstracted for a while now... he should be in cellar... so why did this shadow sound so much like him...

"Why, yes, Bun Bun~" Kaufmo began to lay the purple rabbit on the ground, "So, how about you join me in some new gags?" He chuckled roughly, kissing him on the lips.

There were so many alarm bells that Jax just decided to ignore at that moment as he chose to return the kiss, consequences be damned.
