There might be a weretiger roaming around somewhere out there.”

Accomplished the goal I set for Camp NaNo!

Reached my word count goal on all but four days! And it was higher than usual - I bumped it up from 400 words/day to 525, then to 600.

I’m so proud of myself!

Goal for August: Finish the first round of edits for Part 1. (I’m taking a two-week break before I start edits.)

🦋 VERDANTLAND TRILOGY 2 🦋

(Context: Cameron is a cursorial / high-speed-running-adapted altered human. He can run both bipedally and quadrupedally.)

Cameron loved to run, to feel his body work in the way the Tachytely had designed it to. Sometimes he wished he could keep doing it forever. Just launch into a gallop and never stop. Make it so that there was nothing except the ground flying by underneath him, punctuated by the drumbeat of his hands and feet. It was the best when he was out in the forest. True, he had to be much more careful, and that slowed him down. But what forest running lacked in speed and losing yourself in the gallop, it more than made up for in… he didn’t even know what to call it. Connectedness was the closest word he could think of. He was made in the flawlessly-calibrated way of the tachytelic force, as were all the forms of life that surrounded him, closing in on him with carmine leaves and bumpy roots and tiny fluttering wings. They were all born of the same parent, siblings in the invisible force weaving through the world.

Notes:

The new POV characters are so much fun to write.

Finishing The Claws of the Ounce kind of took up all my energy, and while I’m proud of everything I did, my other projects suffered for it. At least I topped my previous goal of “words written for a specific WIP” by a good ~7,000.

Onwards into August! Let’s see what the final month of this hyper-productive summer has in store…

The Polvestel Regio (often referred to as simply “the Polvestel”) is a large tachytelic hotspot in southern Kenor. The tachytelic force works overtime there, creating whole new orders and classes of life on a regular basis.

Almost all of the hotspot is taken up by dense rainforest that is primarily made up of fast-growing neotrees. These neotrees tend to have different origin clades, structures, and photosynthetic pigments based on the region. Here we have:

• A green (chlorophyll) leaf from a shrub-based neotree. This species is common around Neupen, a small town in the north of the Polvestel.

• A purple (bacteriorhodopsin) leaf from a grass-based neotree. This species is common around Marnela, the largest city in the Polvestel (located in the south). Note the Monstera-like leaf shape.

• A red (phycoerythrin) leaf from a rhodophyte-based neotree. This species is common around Pernior, a largish town in the centre-west(?) of the Polvestel. Note the glide symmetry in its shape.

The Tachytelic Force: A Basic Guide

(edited 12/12/23 to reflect some new lore)

The tachytelic force is a mysterious force that started acting on Tellurian life around a century ago. It alters the DNA of eukaryotic life-forms, sometimes in very drastic ways.

The tachytelic force often works like horizontal gene transfer on steroids, giving organisms traits of other organisms living in the same or surrounding environments. However, it can also create completely new traits not shared with any other extant species.

OBSERVED RULES

The tachytelic force can only change embryos, or organisms in the early stages of budding or fission. No post-birth alterations, basically.

Alterations never bring the kinds of side-effects you might expect from mutation of that scale.

The more complex the organism, the less the overall body plan seems to be able to change.

All altered organisms, no matter how drastically changed, can still produce viable offspring with unaltered (or “base”) members of their original species. However, inheritance is weird: the offspring can inherit partial, full, or no alterations. An altered organism can also reproduce with any other altered variant of the base species, with similar inheritance rules (the child can have only one parent’s alterations or a mix of them).

For “hybrid”-type altered organisms: the species they are combined with is never closely related to the base species. “Hybrids” of two species within the same taxonomic order are basically unheard of.

MECHANISM

The mechanism through which the tachytelic force operates is completely unknown. Despite being the subject of intense study ever since it was first noted, its workings elude science. This is made even more difficult by the fact that there is no known way to measure or detect the force with any sort of instrument: you only know it exists through observing its effects.

The fact that it only affects eukaryotes suggests that the process of alteration involves some kind of interaction with the nucleus.

Some things, mainly the strange inheritance of alterations, have lead researchers to believe that the DNA inserted / transferred / whatever into altered organisms is somehow different from normal DNA. However, it appears identical by all metrics, with the only difference being its origin.

In short: it’s a total mystery.

OTHER NOTES

For whatever reason, there are regions where the tachytelic force is more or less active than average. The Verdantland rainforest in the country of Kenor is an example of a “tachytelic hotspot”.

The percentage of altered humans in most non-hotspot regions is 15-30%.
