speaking about the fact that sozo seems the be the only one infected by the unnamed cordyceps-inspired fungus. irl, theres different splits (subgen) of cordyceps and each of them i think can only infect One Type of Host. like irl split subgen of cordyceps that seems to the inspo for sozo's parasite is Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, all of them in this subgen can only infect one tribe of ant called Camponotini, and cannot infect any others. i think?? (due to reproductive isolation yadayada) so i always sorta linked it in my head that "oh its only infecting sozo because it can only infect ants or something like that".

And it made me miss the space beans in a way I haven't in a long time ;u; So I remade my Among Us character, using features directly from my preferred in-game outfit!

I'll info-dump on my bean below the cut xD It's really long, you've been warned!

Backstory

Cyan worked in the specimen laboratory at MIRA HQ, occasionally taking trips off-planet for fieldwork and sample collecting. Cyan was very attached to her many pets, and would get engrossed in her work studying her specimens.

Unfortunately, she was caught alone in the specimen lab one day, and the impostor- Orange- who snuck into MIRA via transport vessel, sought to gain a new ally. Orange cornered and converted Cyan into an impostor by infecting her with the parasite, and once she turned, Cyan went into a feral hunger rampage, mindlessly killing and eating all of her pets and specimens in the lab. The grief of losing her beloved companions and all her work snapped her back into control of herself, only for Orange to praise her for the carnage. Outraged, Cyan turned on Orange, killing and eating him, too.

Not wanting to die for killing a seemingly innocent crew mate, Cyan outed herself immediately to her crew, handing over Orange's remains as well as their weapons during the meeting. Because Cyan never killed any actual crew mates, her crew decided to let her stay, on the condition that she be observed at all times via her Glitch Console (the Twitch pet lmao). She uses Glitch to stream her continued work in the lab, and keep in near constant contact with the rest of her team - it's also MIRA's way of keeping tabs on her, since she's on thin ice as a known impostor.

Cyan has a vitriolic hatred of other impostors, and can hardly conceive of another 'friendly' impostor like her existing. Whenever a hostile impostor shows up, all of her team have an alarm button on their tablets to call her, and 'deploy' Cyan to 'fix' the problem. This has regained some trust with her closest friends in her crew, though Cyan prefers to stay isolated in her laboratory with her new pets. She would love to find a cure for her condition, but is resigned to existing as she is, and it can't bring back the pets she lost. Cyan is soft on animals, robots, her fellow crew, and children, and has misused science lab equipment to make treats for young visitors. Don't mess with her work or she'll bite you.

Abilities

Cyan-tist is a Shapeshifter variant Impostor. She cannot turn into everybody she sees- however, she can transform into anything living she has ever eaten. The higher percentage of the creature she consumes, the better the disguise. She can shapeshift clothing from her own body matter. The 'cat hat' she once wore has become a physical part of her, the ears functional for hearing and movement, and the eyespots capable of sight, producing tears, and emoting.

Due to her initial feral rampage in the lab, Cyan can transform into a wide variety of crewmate pets and lab specimens- her favorites being the three forms of her former companions: a Doggy, a Headslug, and a Squig. She often uses these to spy on new arrivals undetected, attempting to sus out foreign impostors from the cohort. Cyan can adapt features to her existing body at any level she wants- for example, she can gain the fur coat of the Doggy, the wings of the Pouka or the Goose, or the tentacles of the Squig without needing to fully shapeshift. The Doggy form in particular has a heightened sense of smell, allowing her to detect if the scent of a foreign impostor is present, though it may not be sufficient to identify the specific individual from a crowd.

Cyan-tist's adaptive shapeshifting is powerful enough that she can gain the unique attributes of other impostors she has eaten. This includes her advanced chromatophores for changing color, which she acquired from Orange, the first impostor she killed and consumed. Very few impostors since Orange have had anything noteworthy to add to her repertoire of skills. Cyan swore to never eat a crew mate.

Completely self-indulgent Rodamrix Animated Series thoughts

Okay I couldn't help it, I wondered about what would happen if Cyan were to be present in the series. !!!SPOILER WARNING IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT, DO NOT READ THIS PART!!!

Original series- If she didn't adapt to the sudden climate shift of the impostor takeover, or stood with the crew in any capacity when they began to spread out of control, Cyan-tist is most likely dead. She would not have gotten along with many- if any- of the impostors within MIRA HQ, and actively would have stood against or tried to kill them, making her an enemy. I can't imagine Big Purple let her live if she tried anything. If by some miracle she DID survive, Cyan is most likely operating as a plant within the impostor hideout, smuggling supplies or otherwise tipping off the survivors as to the movements of the horde so crewmates can escape or avoid being discovered.

Alternate series- Cyan-tist is completely unaware of the plot that Crimson and the MIRA HQ heads have for selling off impostors/parasites and dissenters as test subjects. As such, she continues to operate in her specimen lab, on constant watch for new impostors to show up and threaten her crew and friends. The future arrival of Red, Purple, and Pink would set off HUGE alarm bells for her, and she would be on high alert the moment she detects they're impostors. Cyan would HATE Purple as a known killer impostor, be sus of Pink's no-thoughts-head-empty behavior- though she'd discover quickly he could be distracted with snacks- and not trust Red until his own crew vouches for him. Once the Skeld survivors confirm Red is innocent and a fellow 'good' impostor who saved their lives, Cyan would back off, but keep her eye on all of them.

Nectar Cows are one of the most common livestock species for dryads, as these big ol bugs are a great source of eggs, "nectar" and deliciously sweet meat! With how often we rear them and how wide spread they have become, it is obvious that different breeds arise. The Crescent Horn is a pretty well known one, but right behind that is the breed known as the Waxy Blue Nectar Cow! Just one look at it should explain pretty much everything about that name.

Waxy Blues are pretty easy to identify, though often outsiders mistake their strange coating as "fur." While it does look a bit fuzzy from a distance, all these white bits that form on their body is actually wax. They have many wax glands throughout their body, and over times it slowly builds up into thick patches or long fluffy looking "tails." Originally, wax production was used to wick up secreted fluids and move it away from the body, but breeding has turned it up to an incredible degree! Now it is in such quantities, that it actually serves as a deterrent for predators, as few beasts want to bite into a mouthful of wax! That, and it protects their hide if the foe does chomp down, as often they will miss actual flesh and will come off with nothing but loose wax. At that point, the confused predator is open to a nasty spray of their foul fluids or a spiky kick!

The Waxy Blue is obviously reared for these wax secretions, which the farmer will cut off and collect. These Nectar Cows are not shaved clean, rather they get a trimming, which removes excess but still leaves them with a decent coating. Due to this production being fueled purely by breeding instead of nature, the Waxy Blue can actually produce too much wax to the point where it will become a detriment. If not cut and maintained, they can easily bury themselves in thick sheets of wax, which may trap the very fluids they wished to wick away in the first place! Nectar and other gunk can build up and get stuck in spots, eventually becoming a breeding ground for infection or parasites!

The wax of this Nectar Cow is used as a substitute for beeswax, primarily in areas where apiaries are not as common. All the trimmings are melted down and combined into a wide range of products, like writing tablets, wax pencils, candles, water proofing mixtures and much more! They even make little Honey Bottle candies out of them, where the wax makes the outside "pod" and the inside is filled with nectar. You bite the tip off like you would an actual Honey Bottle, suck out the juice and then chew on the leftover wax! Some folk even like chewing on em without the sweet treat inside! Not really my thing, as I like a bit of flavor if I am going through the trouble of chewing. But if you rear Waxy Blues, then it is practically law that you are constantly gnawing on a gob of the stuff. Point this out to one of them at your own peril, as they are reeeaaal good at spitting it at people that annoy them. Why do I know this? Well, I just...know a lot of things! Yeah!

Also I am in the camp of people who are slightly disappointed that Waxy Blue wax is not blue. I mean, come on! It's right there in the name! And it would look beautiful too! How have we not bred that in yet?!

Ticks on dogs

I’ll give a short description of each AU under the cut

Basement: My most canon-adjacent AU. It’s how I view the basement and the stories of the kids/basement borns inside. A bleak story, but one that comes with a happy ending. Other than Purgatory, this is the one I’ve talked about the most. As many of my tboi HCs are placed here

Purgatory: The main AU. Purgatory follows Isaac as he travels through hell and heaven while figuring out life on earth. Trying his best to avoid being captured due to his status as a “Prophet”; a special human soul who has connections to both the spiritual and physical realms

Parasite: The world is put into an apocalypse after an earthquake opened up a giant crater and released a swarm of locusts that spread parasites onto the populous. Most end up dead after being infected, the few that live are given special abilities, putting humanity to the test

Sacrifice: I lovingly call this my Magical Girl AU. A bunch of random people are picked and sent into a death-match for the world’s entertainment. Helped by their friendly familiar that allows them to transform into more powerful forms. Sinister secrets hides underneath it all

9 Lives: Another AU I have written a bit about here. After the original human world was destroyed humanity moves to a new world to save themselves. In the far future, Isaac finds himself wrapped up on the wrong end of a devil deal and has 9 chances to live his life to the fullest

New God: The world needs to be started again. In hopes that fresh blood will bring better change, they take in a baby God and train them so they can make a better world before they destroy the old one. Eden and Azazel watch the new God with worry for their own futures

Cursed: Isaac is cursed and seems to bring a terrible fate to whatever comes in contact with him. For as long as he can remember, he has isolated himself to avoid bringing more pain to others. A group of young college adults find him in an abandoned house and give him hope again

Armageddon: A different timeline/future setting for Purgatory. The tainted timeline where Judas successfully merges the physical and spiritual realms. Now with the world’s fate on the line, the new archangel Isaac has to make sure the world goes in the right direction

Soul Bond: The au I made completely on a whim. A world that’s defined by everyone’s soul being bonded to someone else’s and the trip down The Basement some will take to break/make their current bonds. A lot more fantastical and “out there” than most of my other AUs

Adult: The future au for all of the Basement kids. Basically everyone’s older now and working through the trauma of what the basement did to them. Some of the basement’s old scars still stick strong to this day

Angel AU: An AU where everyone is dead Yippie 🎉All the characters are either angels or demons. Living their afterlife to the best they can while shifting through their deaths (they all died pretty young). This AU was originally made for my “Ask Angel Jacob and Esau” ask blog

Edmund Ultra Pride: A comedy AU about Ultra Pride and their mysterious ability to change the basement to their whim with their art tablet. They end up taking a liking to a child who accidentally falls in and tries to make their situation more palatable

The extra 3: Tainted Isaac and Infernal Isaac are both from the basement au. Tainted is self explanatory. Infernal is based on a new game mode idea I’ve been toying with. And I’ve talked about Brother Delirious a small bit. But he’s P!Isaac’s worst thoughts taken physical form

Atem wasn't even surprised anymore.

Exasperated, desperate, but not surprised. The last months had been getting progressively worse after all. Really, he should've expected this.

"Listen," he hissed with the little patience he had left, "I am not some spoiled tourist. Lives depend on me getting there in time. And if you can't get me there," he gestured derisively at the broken parts of the supposedly top class ship, "then tell me who can!"

The man looked at him calculatingly, before finally relaxing and drawling, "Well, you are trying to leave Federation space, so your pickings are slim. "Deal." Atem agreed, aware of the calculating glint in the man's eyes. There was something about the captain that warned Atem not to underestimate him. Despite the jolly nature he had at first shown there was clear intelligence there. If they negotiated for long, like his people usually did, he feared the price would only rise.

And he really didn't have the time.

Nor the stomach, if he was entirely honest with himself. In which case he would have to admit that he would likely not be doing much negotiating at his destination either. Or ever again.

Honesty was overrated.

Mahad who always knew what to say, who had fought tooth and nail and had to be restrained when Atem left anyway.

Atem couldn't let him come along, as he would have if given the chance.

And he couldn't not go. His people needed him.

Even with all that in mind he was still glad when one of the crewmen came by and at least fabricated them some beds.

A young man - boy? - with wild, colorful hair. Same height as his, but Atem was short for a Khemetian. And Federation people all seemed to be giants.

Quickly silencing his attendants muttering, he nodded his head in thanks - a federation gesture he had picked up from their diplomats.

There was nothing comfortable about this journey or the destination, but at least he wouldn't already be hurting all over when he arrived.

He wants to object, to plead, to run, to panic - but before he can do any of these things, there is a sudden burst of blinding-white pain through his head. He staggers, eyes rolling back, as imagery flashes through his brain. Dimly he is aware that the woman's sword has dropped, that she seems to be clutching at her temples as well as a sudden energy surges between them.

"My head. What is this...ngh..."

"What made you think I was a thrall?" he asks, eyeing the sword now on her back with considerable caution.

Her scowl deepens. "We carry mind flayer parasites. Unless we escape, unless we are cleansed, our bodies and minds will be tainted and twisted. Within days, we will be ghaik. Mind flayers."

He feels the panic starting to rise in his throat again. He remembers reading of mind flayers in some of the older tomes at the monastery - terrifying creatures that consume the mind and personality of their victims for psionic energy. No one he knows had ever seen one - at least not before that ship roared out of the clouds above the city south of the temple...

"We are turning into mind flayers?" he asks shakily. "There must be something we can do!"

She shakes her head gruffly and turns away, pulling the sword from its sheath again. "We can do nothing until we escape - that must be our priority." She points down the path ahead of them; several of the monstrous winged creatures that surrounded the ship are now feasting on some of its fleshy construction, making squealing, slurping sounds of excitement.

"First," the githyanki woman says, "we exterminate the imps. Then we find the helm and take control of the ship." She rounds on him again, stabs a finger at his chest. "We will address the matter of a cure for this infection once we reach the material plane."

Hector nods blankly. He is desperately grateful for some sense of direction in this terrible place. (Where even are they? If not the material plane, then where?) He reaches for the memories of long hours spent training in combat in the monastery's training halls; it is a point of stability to which he can focus himself now. He does not know what is going on - but he does know how to fight. His masters saw to that from his boyhood.

He nods again, more firmly, and she turns away, charging outward towards the imps with a githyanki shout.
