important
hi my loves. as many of you know, i’ve been sleepyhollands on tumblr since 2020. since then, i’ve written fanfiction about tom holland and co., peter parker, and harry styles. most recently (and i say this loosely because this was a year ago) i posted a demon!harry blurb that received a lot of attention, and i announced it would become a mini-series. however, after much deliberation, i’ve decided against moving forward with writing on tumblr altogether.
i didn’t come to this decision lightly, because i feel like i have so much left to create, and the fanfiction community i run in has been so lovely and supportive of me over the years. i also feel guilt over letting go of a project i promised to complete. but at the end of the day, i know this is the right choice for me.
there’s a few reasons. for starters, i feel as though my life is really fast-paced at the moment (and for the foreseeable future), and i don’t quite have time to write in day to day life. for a couple years now, every time i’ve sat down to start writing, it’s felt like a chore. for the demon!harry mini-series, i wrote (i kid you not) at least 20 drafts of the first chapter, which is why i kept promising the release “soon,” but it never came. it felt so forced each time i read it back, and once i realized i had fallen out of love with writing, i knew i would never end up finishing the series. so i figured it would be best to not start it at all for the sake of saving everyone from a story they would never know the end of.
additionally, i’ve lost interest in the people i’ve written about. that’s not to say i don’t love them as people/characters and won’t continue to support them in their careers, i just don’t feel motivated to create or consume content about them anymore. again, it feels more like something i have to do rather than something i want to do, and that’s no fun for anyone.
finally, and i truly hate to say this… i’ve honestly come to dislike what reading and writing fanfiction has come to. now, i’d like to make it very clear that i am not attacking any creators either on tumblr, wattpad, or ao3. i love all my mutuals and the writers i consume content from. that being said, this new culture of “social media alternate universes,” “text message alternate universes,” and my least favorite: capitalizing on fanfiction through patreon or other related sites has just made me less and less inclined to engage in the fanfiction community.
our generation is so phone/social media-oriented that it’s made its way into the content i’d prefer to just read. and if that’s your cup of tea, that’s totally fine! consume whatever content you enjoy, seriously. but i don’t get fulfillment from reading make-believe text threads or instagram posts, and i’m noticing it more and more, to the point where blocking tags such as “#smau” just isn’t cutting it anymore.
and the patreon thing…. listen, i get that we live in a world where people are just trying to make money in any way they can. i’m not judging in the slightest. it’s hard out here, i understand. that being said, the beauty and allure of fanfiction to me is that it’s free— it’s pure and accessible to everyone. and i’ve found that i’m simply not willing to spend money on a non-essential product i used to be able to consume free of cost. i mean that in the least petty way possible, truly. i’m not calling it immoral, or a scam, or unfair for creators to earn money for their work. i just miss when everything around me wasn’t subscription based, and now that even fanfiction can cost money, i’ve developed a bit of an aversion to it.
(as a quick, unrelated side note, i’d like to mention that the fanfiction circles i’m in are all hyper-fixating on tropes i’m really not into, such as heavy bdsm-centered content, major age gaps, dad’s best friend, best friend’s dad, etc., and this is making it hard to continue engaging with them and their content. while i will always love and support the writers on this site, i want to avoid coming across this content entirely.)
all of this to say, i’m not sure if i’ll keep this account. i’m not planning on leaving tumblr, but i’m heavily debating deleting this account and creating a new one for a fresh start. that, or i’ll leave this up and move to a new account. i’m not sure yet. in any case, i’ll try to make sure there’s a place you can go to access my writing if you choose to come back for a re-read.
i want to thank everyone for being so kind to me over the years, and i’m sorry if i’ve disappointed anyone with this information. i’ll be tagging people from my taglist, and those who mentioned they wanted to be tagged in the demon!harry mini-series below. much love. 🤍

The Magic Behind Cadbury’s Gorilla Advert
In this series, Squideo has examined the best ways to turn advertising content into gold. Now that we’ve broken down the eight key ingredients, it’s time to dive deep into some examples of stellar advertising. This week, the advert in question was picked by Squideo’s Creative Director Ben Underwood.
When asked why this particular advert had become his favourite of all time, Ben said: “there’s a gorilla playing the drums, how can it not be?”
Cadbury in the Mist
Cadbury is no stranger to advertising success, from its iconic Smash Martians in 1974 to the captivating Flake Girl in 1985. These adverts have frequently featured in polls asking the British public about their favourite television ads. The only thing missing from this trifecta of marketing sensations is 2007’s Gorilla.
The advert was released at a difficult time for this beloved British institution, which was founded in 1824. In 2006, several batches of chocolate were contaminated with salmonella which led to a £20 million GBP recall and £1 million fine in 2007 from the Crown Court for its failure to notify the Food Standards Agency.
This was followed in rapid succession by more PR nightmares. A failure to highlight allergy risks in its Easter Eggs, the hiatus of its sponsorship of British soap opera Coronation Street, large staff cuts to its British workforce, a huge marketing disaster with its newly acquired Trident Chewing Gum, and a badly planned treasure hunt shutting down a cemetery. Cadbury was starting to look bad and needed a change in fortunes fast to reverse its declining sales.
King Cadbury
Fallon approached Cadbury in 2006, with plans to lure the confectionary giant away from its existing advertising agency. Gorilla formed part of its major pitch, aiming to move Cadbury away from its middle-aged and middle-class marketing. Fallon wanted to revitalise the brand and inject much needed whimsy to attract a younger audience. Considering Cadbury was the brand that inspired Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, it shouldn’t have been hard to do.
According to Phil Rumbol, director of marketing at Cadbury’s:
“The whole business had become quite earnest and serious, when in fact it’s chocolate and should be more about things such as Willy Wonka… The brief I gave the agency was: Eating Cadbury’s chocolate makes you feel good.”
The idea for the Gorilla advert, by director Juan Cabral, didn’t start with Cadbury and it was proving a hard sell. “Random advertising,” with no clear theme, plot or reason, is a lot more common in the 2020s than it was in 2007. Clients didn’t see the point in a drum-playing Gorilla; until Cadbury.
Even then, Rumbol faced opposition within the company and it took four months from the adverts creation until he was able to air it on Channel 4 in August 2007.
Planet of the Dairy Milks
Airing during the ad breaks for Channel 4’s eighth season of the monumental hit Big Brother, the initial airing was always certain to get plenty of views – 14% of all British viewers were watching the channel at the time it aired. What wasn’t assured was the advert becoming a viral hit; but Gorilla managed it.
Watched by millions on YouTube, the advert also quickly inspired several parodies including those on The Mighty Boosh and BBC Children in Need. Cadbury saw a 10% rise in profits following the release of the advert, finally convincing everyone of Gorilla’s potential. Cadbury eventually paid to film additional footage for the advert, broadcasting the lengthened version during the 2007 Rugby World Cup final between England and South Africa.
But why did Gorilla become such a big hit?
Magnificent Music
Cadbury’s use of Phil Collins In The Air Tonight put the song back in the charts 25 years after its initial release in 1981, which proves how instrumental the song was in the popularity of the advert. After all, the plot centres around it as the gorilla sits at the drums waiting for its opportunity to play the iconic drum fill. The line “I’ve been waiting for this moment all my life” perfectly builds up to the gorilla’s star moment as it begins the solo.
Like the full version of the song, there is a build up in the advert before the solo. Out of its total length, 90 seconds, the audience spends 60 seconds waiting. The camera focuses on the gorilla’s preparation, with only Collin’s lyrics to entertain in the meantime.
Beautiful Branding
Panatone 2685C (HEX#330072). Otherwise known as Cadbury Purple. For much of the advert, this purple patch behind the character is the only indication given that this is a Cadbury advert. For many companies, this would be insufficient branding for a marketing advert – but not for Cadbury.
The colour purple was chosen for the brand in 1905, supposedly because it was the late Queen Victoria’s favourite colour. It features on every Cadbury product, and in 1995 became the subject of a trademark dispute. Cadbury successfully trademarked the colour, however this has been contested by major rival Nestlé ever since.
The gold accents throughout the advert, including the band on the wall behind the drumkit and the gorilla’s gold teeth, complete the branding and the advert is bookended by Cadbury logos.
Going Gorilla
Director Juan Cabral went to great lengths to make the gorilla character as realistic as possible. In 2007, CGI isn’t what it is today which didn’t make it an option considering the ‘documentary feel’ Cabral wanted. They eventually found a gorilla costume at Stan Winston Studio in Hollywood that had been produced for the 1995 film Congo.
The actor who wore the suit, Garon Michael, was in the same film. Animatronics controlled the facial expression of the gorilla, and some customisations were made to the costume like adding the gold teeth. Michael repeatedly practiced the drum solo while wearing the costume in order to emulate Phil Collins, to such a success that initially people thought it was Collins dressed as the gorilla.
According to Cabal, the aim was to make it look like the gorilla had been waiting for this drum solo all its life – just as the lyrics to In The Air Tonight suggest during the lead in. Without the successful use of animatronics to create facial expressions and Michael’s dedicated performance, this aim could have been lost and with it the song would have had less impact.
Content Worth Gold

one of six of the levington clan , life for alabama was picture perfect . a close ( enough ) bond with all of her siblings and two loving parents . not to mention the money and fame that came with her last name , there wasn’t much for the young girl to really ask for but that didn’t stop her from doing so . known to never really be satisfied , she’s always thought there was something bigger and better around the corner and can’t seem to stomach the idea of anyone getting such a thing over her . call it entitlement , if you’d like .
growing up in los angeles didn’t do her any favors , submerged in a world were who you are and what you look like was all that really mattered . her mother was the first to jump on any chance to make her precious little girl the absolute best . taught at a young age to always step out of the house like you were walking the catwalk . you’d catch alabama dead before you ever caught her out and about in sweatpants ( to be honest , i don’t even think she owns a pair of sweatpants ) . the world really got a glimpse into how image obsessed the young girl was when she got a nose job for her sixteenth birthday . truthfully it was like some sort of right of passage among her highschool friends back then . a group of private school girls who were more cliquey than anyone could really stomach .
for as long as anyone could remember she was the most pristine of her siblings , the one who always put her best foot forward . that all changed at seventeen though after a more public break up took place , she was left distraught . the only way she knew to numb her feelings was to fall into the party scene . she drank more than her body could handle , sobered up with lines , and didn’t get home until the sun was coming up . it was a rather dark point in her life . the only silver lining being she could stop when she wanted to ( no , seriously ) , she just didn’t want to at that time . her parents only taking it seriously when she was arrested at school for possession of drugs ( truth is , the drugs weren’t even hers she was just taking the fall for a friend but that’s something that’s never gone public ) . once they bailed her out , they almost immediately shipped her off to some rehab facility in malibu . the doctors there quickly realizing they weren’t dealing with an addict by any means just a teenage girl who was upset and lashing out . it’s unfortunately a trait no one has been able to help her unlearn , to this day she’s known to be rather difficult , especially when she feels she has been done wrong . she will lash out - violently , verbally , you never really know if venomous words or a shockingly chin rocking hit are going to come from her .
after her stint in rehab , she switched highschools ( due to being expelled ) and being her quickly found herself a new group of friends at the top of the food chain , she’s a natural social climber and doesn’t really need to put too much effort into doing so . soon enough she graduated and let’s be real her grades were good enough to get her a diploma but that’s about it . college had never been in her plans and thankfully she already had a career lined up for herself in race car driving which she’d picked up around the age of thirteen when she started kart racing . it started off as her chasing an adrenaline rush but quickly turned into so much more , after her first major competition as a teenager people around her began making claims she could break records for women in the world of racing . she has gone on to proving them all right with her career breaking barriers and winning races no woman before her ever has . alabama is the first to say the way she carries herself on the tracks is much like the way she carries herself throughout life . a women in a male dominated environment who refuses to take on the spot as anything less than just as dominating as her male counterparts , unafraid of whether that makes her too much in anyone’s eyes or not .
the tabloids often have alot to say about her and her antics but one that can never be said about this nepotism baby is that she doesn’t hold loyalty and honesty in the highest regard . a true rarity in the world she lives in but alabama will fall on a sword for those closest to her ( i.e her arrest back in highschool ) , she may have a cool hard shell covering her at all times but she cares immensly about her family and those she deems her friends . she’s the girl who is still close with most of her childhood friends just simply because you never turn your back on someone ( unless they give you reason to ) .
known for having a terrible track record when it comes to the men in her life , leaving her to be deemed a scorn women by many tabloids at just the age of twenty - six . her bad luck started at seventeen and has recently been topped off with her rather distasteful split with ford , in which the whole world watched him cheat on her . to say she is the leading champion of the men suck club would be an understatement . she doesn’t trust men to save a life and frankly she feels she’s entitled to those feelings .

Jake Paul to Face Mike Tyson in Highly Anticipated Boxing Match
The YouTube sensation turned boxer, Jake Paul, is set to take on former heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson, in a blockbuster boxing match.
Jake Paul, known for his rise to fame on YouTube, has been making waves in the world of combat sports. After knocking out former NBA player Nate Robinson in 2020, Paul has been on a mission to establish himself as a serious boxer. Now, he is set to face his biggest challenge yet - a showdown with the legendary Mike Tyson.
This clash of generations is sure to captivate audiences and ignite intense debate.
The fight, scheduled for July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will be streamed on Netflix, marking the streaming giant's first foray into combat sports. With Paul's Most Valuable Promotions partnering with Netflix, anticipation is high for what is expected to be one of the most-watched boxing events in recent history.
A Clash of Titans
Mike Tyson, considered one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time, will step into the ring at the age of 58 to face the much younger Jake Paul, who is only 27. Despite Tyson's age, he has shown remarkable fitness and skill in recent exhibition matches. Having held the undisputed heavyweight championship from 1987 to 1990, Tyson's legacy in the sport is unmatched.
On the other hand, Paul has quickly gained notoriety in the boxing world. With a record of 9-1 and six knockouts, he has defeated former UFC stars such as Nate Diaz, Anderson Silva, and Tyron Woodley. Paul's journey from viral knockout sensation to a serious contender has been nothing short of remarkable.
The Road to Redemption
For Tyson, this fight with Paul is a chance for redemption. After retiring in 2005, Tyson suffered two consecutive losses and decided to hang up his gloves. However, his exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020 showed that he still has the fire and determination to compete.
Tyson sees this fight as a full-circle moment, as he was the one who kickstarted Paul's boxing journey on the undercard of his fight with Jones Jr.
Paul, on the other hand, sees this fight as an opportunity to prove himself against one of the sport's biggest icons. He has been steadily climbing the ranks, taking on more experienced opponents to gain valuable experience. Despite being a relative newcomer to the sport, Paul's ambition and drive have propelled him to this historic moment.
Netflix Enters the Ring
The decision to stream the fight on Netflix marks a significant move for the streaming giant. Known for its original content, Netflix has been expanding into live sports, with the recent streaming of the Netflix Cup and the Netflix Slam. Gabe Spitzer, Netflix's vice president for nonfiction sports, expressed excitement about the partnership with Most Valuable Promotions and the anticipation for the event.
This historic fight will take place at the largest NFL stadium in the US, further adding to the spectacle. With a global audience tuning in on Netflix, the stage is set for a night of pure drama and excitement.
The boxing world is abuzz with anticipation as Jake Paul prepares to face Mike Tyson in what promises to be a thrilling encounter. This clash of generations will test the mettle of both fighters and provide a captivating spectacle for fans around the world. As the fight approaches, the debate surrounding the legitimacy of crossover boxing matches continues.
Regardless of the outcome, this event will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the sport and further solidify Jake Paul's status as a formidable force in the boxing world.

SMART BOMB
The Completely Unnecessary News Analysis
By Christopher Smart
October 17, 2023
IN HEAVEN THERE IS NO SMOG
Latter-day Saints, aka Mormons, aren't concerned about man-made climate change. Why worry if the Celestial Kingdom awaits — in heaven there is no smog. According to a survey by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), only 10 percent of Mormons say they're concerned about global warming and extreme weather. Some 44 percent believe it's all due to that wishy-washy Mother Nature — not cows burping and fossil fuels burning. Utah is among the reddest of red states. Get this, 54 percent of Mormons surveyed said they had watched Fox News within the last 24 hours. You're right, Wilson, that explains a lot. No wonder they think Nancy Pelosi is Beelzebub and Donald Trump is a direct descendant of Jesus of Nazareth. In the U.S. less than one-third of Republicans believe humans cause climate change, compared to 83percent of Democrats and 64 percent of independents. As president, Donald Trump erased or loosened some 100 rules and regulations on air, water and atmospheric pollution. No surprise, in 2020, 58.5 percent of Utah Mormons voted for Trump compared to 37.9 percent for Biden, according to Y2 Analytics. “This very expensive global warming bullshit has got to stop,” Trump said. Good thing that in heaven you don't need air conditioning.
HAPPY VALLEY NOT ALWAYS SO HAPPY
A news reporter's job ain't easy. They go around digging into all kinds of stinky stuff and people don't always take kindly to it. Take Genelle Pugmire who works for the Daily Herald in Utah County. She had the audacity to write that Orem Mayor David Young was sued for $1 million in Alabama in a case surrounding fraudulent business loans. Who does she think she is. The mayor spent 20 minutes in a recent city council meeting deriding the paper and its reporter. Why was she reporting bad news, anyway, when there was so much good news right under her nose. "It's just mind-blowing the disconnect,” he said. “What's going on in this newspaper versus what's going on in reality." The Alabama court did order him to pay $1 million, but that apparently is beside the point. And anyway the mayor says he's innocent. For reporters blowback comes with the territory. If you dish it up you'd better be ready to take it. But Pugmire's 31-year-old daughter wasn't taking it. Linnea Pugmire confronted the mayor and allegedly spit on him and slapped his face. She was arrested and charged with threatening an elected official and causing injury, spitting in a person's face and assault by propelling a bodily substance. Holy moly. Utah County is often called Happy Valley — another case of bad reporting.
THE AROMA OF NAKED AMBITION
Sean Reyes, don't look back something may be gaining on you. Hey Wilson, do you remember when Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes went to Nevada after the 2020 election to “investigate” voting issues. No, we don't know if he went to casinos for lap dances. But he did join a lawsuit seeking to invalidate presidential election tallies in four battleground states won by Joe Biden. Apparently his real job is just too boring. Recall when Reyes went on a “dangerous” mission undercover to Colombia with his good buddy Tim Ballard in a sting to nab sex-traffickers. It was more dangerous than the Jungle Cruise Safari ride at Disneyland. Later he put on a black T-shirt and went to the Sundance Film Festival looking for prostitutes. Alas, the sex was free. Last year he went to the soccer World Cup in Qatar to help the emir catch sex-traffickers. It would have been impolite not to watch all the matches. Reyes also bragged he was a producer of the movie “Sound of Freedom” about Ballard's sex-trafficking gig. Then Ballard was sued for alleged sexual assault. Oops. Tim Ballard who, Reyes asked. Some have started to smell something funny coming from the attorney general's office. No Wilson, they aren't smelling sex, but it could be that of naked ambition — and man is it putrid.
Post script — That's a wrap for another fun-filled week here at Smart Bomb where we keep track of the House of Representatives so you don't have to. Well Wilson, the chaos caucus is having a grand old time, fiddling while Rome burns. The ship is sinking and Republicans are arguing over who should take the helm. At this writing it's impossible to predict how this internecine mud wrestling will shake out. But here's one part that will go down in history: A leading candidate for the job of Speaker of the House is Ohio firebrand Jim Jordan, who was in the White House loop for the planning of the Jan. 6 fiasco and failed coup. Imagine having the Speaker of the House, in line to become president right behind the vice president, who tried to overturn the government. It's no surprise he is an election denier and has made the case for a Trump victory many times on Fox Faux News and NewsMax. Jordan does have friends in high places. Fox's conspiracy guru Sean Hannity lobbied moderate Republican holdouts to get behind the Ohio schemer for Speaker. Many in Congress, including some Republicans, can't abide Jordan because he's patently dishonest. Enumerating Jordan's misrepresentations and outright lies would take forever. But you can tell when he's prevaricating 'cause his lips are moving.
Alright Wilson, we gotta get a theme song for Jim Jordan. He's appointed himself Grand Inquisitor calling people before his Judiciary Committee and like something from a George Orwell tale skewers them with innuendo and indicts them with half truths and fabrication. So get the guys in the band and take us out with something apropos:
On the day I was born
The nurses all gathered 'round
And they gazed in wide wonder
At the joy they had found
The head nurse spoke up
Said "leave this one alone"
She could tell right away
That I was bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
I broke a thousand hearts
Before I met you
I'll break a thousand more, baby
Before I am through
I wanna be yours pretty baby
Yours and yours alone
I'm here to tell ya honey
That I'm bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
I make a rich woman beg
I'll make a good woman steal
I'll make an old woman blush
And make a young girl squeal
I wanna be yours pretty baby
Yours and yours alone
I'm here to tell ya honey
That I'm bad to the bone
B-B-B-B-Bad to the bone
(Bad to the Bone — George Thorogood)

Sept 22, 2020
While some Arab countries were celebrating their normalisation deals with Israel and Google was removing Palestine from its maps, Club Deportivo Palestino in Chile was celebrating its centenary. One hundred years of Palestinian identity in a South American country suggests the continued failure of Israel and its brutal military occupation to erase Palestinian identity, and obliterate the very existence of the Palestinian people.
One of the most unique football clubs in the world, Club Deportivo Palestino was founded in Chile on 20 August, 1920, by Palestinian immigrants in the city of Osorno, in the south of Chile. The club is known as Palestine's "second national team". On such a special occasion, a commemorative club jersey was produced with the legend, "More than a team, it is an entire people" written on it.
Speaking to MEMO, the president of the football club, Jorge Uauy, explained that the gold on the special jersey represents the 100th anniversary, and the years 1920-2020 are below the club crest. "Like our regular jersey, it has our motto written on the back, in Spanish and Arabic, and the map of Palestine on the sleeve."
The coronavirus pandemic has forced the club to find innovative ways of celebrating this major anniversary. One of the most symbolic buildings in Santiago was illuminated with the new motto of the club, for example, and statements by former players were broadcast on important media channels across Chile. Furthermore, Club Deportivo Palestino launched the first virtual T-shirt museum in Chile where people can learn more about the history of the team. The tour includes a virtual walk through La Cisterna Stadium and the venue's dressing rooms where you can see the different shirts that the team has worn over the past 40 years.
According to Anuar Majluf, the Executive Director of the Palestinian Community of Chile, major events were planned but had to be shelved due to the virus. "So we had to celebrate through digital platforms. We have received greetings from many different Palestinian artists and intellectuals in Occupied Palestine and the Diaspora. Well-known players in Europe also sent greetings and congratulations to the club."
From the very beginning Club Deportivo Palestino has always been more than a football club. It was created by the Palestinian community in Chile, which is home to the largest — and one of the oldest — outside the Arab world. Today, almost half a million people of Palestinian origin live there, out of Chile's total population of 18 million. The so-called "Chilestinians" arrived from Palestine during the 19th century with another wave of migration in 1948, embodying a connection between the Middle East and Latin America.
"The club's founders saw it as a way to keep Palestinian identity alive in the face of attempts to take it away after the [UN] partition plan for Palestine in 1947 and the 1948 Nakba," explained Majluf.
Is Club Deportivo Palestino a Chilean or Palestinian club? It is a faithful reflection of the Palestinian presence in the country, which in the early years saw football as a way of integrating into Chilean society. As a Chilean club, it provides an opportunity for the oppressed people of Palestine to be seen and heard.
"Besides what we have achieved on the field," Uauy pointed out, "we are honoured to be recognised around the world as the Chilean football team that represents Palestine. If you take a look at our kit, you will find our Palestinian identity all over it. Furthermore, if you go to one of our home games, you will see more than one Palestinian flag flying in our stadium."
The club's achievements have not been limited to domestic competitions. As Chilean champions and cup winners the team has played in international competitions for the past five years.
"When we have played in other South American countries, we have felt great warmth as well," said Uauy. "And we know that people buy and wear our jersey abroad, because it represents Palestine, and it has done so for a hundred years. Moreover, we have seen our historic jersey in the hands of renowned people such as [musician and human rights campaigner] Roger Waters, Xavi Hernández and even Pope Francis, which is astonishing."
The club was able to visit the occupied West Bank and play a match against the Palestine national team some years ago. It was a milestone in the club's history. Everyone who participated still remembers that it was a very special journey. "We believe that our bond with Palestine, which has been strong from the beginning, should grow even stronger in the future and we would be delighted and honoured to visit Palestine again soon," Uauy added.
In 2014, Club Deportivo Palestino replaced the number 1 on player's jerseys with an elongated map of Palestine. However, Chile's 18,000-strong Jewish community protested against such "political exploitation" of the sport. According to Uauy, the decision to use the map of historic Palestine instead of the number 1 was a way of paying homage to the land of their "Chilestinian" ancestors. "There was a complaint to the Chilean Football Association, and we were fined because — according to the FA rules — the numbers on the jersey have to be numerals. We have also been warned and fined because of the banners displayed by our supporters, but none of that changes what we are: a football club that represents the Palestinian people, in our homeland and the diaspora."
As it celebrates 100 years, Club Deportivo Palestino continues to refute Israel's lies. Majluf says: "When Zionists started going to Palestine to colonise our land, they said that it was 'a land without a people for a people without a land'. However, this founding myth of Israel collapses immediately given the living Palestinian identity in Chile from the beginning of the 20th century, whose people founded major organisations that continue until this day."
The "Chilestinians" therefore provide a living example of the true strength of the collective Palestinian identity that existed before Israel was violently imposed on the Middle East, and continues to exist. Here in this South American country, the flag of Palestine is raised in a different stadium every weekend throughout the football season.
"We are now getting ready for the next hundred years," concludes Club Deportivo Palestino President Jorge Uauy. "It is important to work hard in order to continue the legacy of our founders and achieve great things in the sporting arena."

Disrupting the Predatory Coffee Industry
The 2020 forest fire that nearly destroyed the San Lazaro Coffee farm in Honduras was not an accident. While it wasn’t clear what or who had started the fire it was very clear that it had been intentionally set. The same was true with the fire that we put out in 2021, 2022, and the fire that we put out just a few weeks ago in the spring of 2023. All of these fires were set during the last few weeks of the annual dry season when the countryside is like a tender box, and the mountain slopes of our coffee farm are covered in dry pine needles, where just the slightest spark can start a blaze that is nearly impossible to control. The reason for these fires? Coffee prices.
When we bought our farm in 2006 I didn’t know anything about coffee, really nothing. Nothing about a good cup of coffee and especially nothing about farming coffee. The past 13 years have been an incredible adventure into an interesting commodity, culture, and industry oftentimes controlled by cartel-esque companies that make it nearly impossible for the actual farmer to prosper, even in years with record coffee prices around the world like what was seen in 2022.
January 2007 Drying Patio
2007 Coffee Harvest
In the southern region of Honduras there is only one viable option for a farmer to sell their harvest, that’s to the local coffee cooperative. And not knowing any better, that's where we sold our coffee after our first harvest back in 2007. Our 100% organic coffee was bought from us for $0.90 per pound. Far less than what it cost us to grow, harvest, and mill it. I was shocked and decided then that we would never sell to the cooperative again, that we’d figure out how to sell our coffee in the US on our own. This journey has not been without heartache, failures, setbacks, and financial loss. But by the 2019/20 harvest we had finally started to gain momentum and to increase the volume of coffee that we had available we offered to buy coffee from the women who work for us on the farm. Almost all of them have small parcels of land growing coffee by their houses, maybe only a ¼ of an acre, just something to help subsidize their family’s income. Starting with the 2019/20 harvest we offered them a 25% premium over what the cooperative would have paid them and they were more than willing to sell their coffee to us. In fact they were so excited that they told their neighbors and soon the word had gotten out across the villages on the mountain where our farm is located. For the neighboring coffee farms, owned by wealthy families in the region, this only added insult to injury. They were already feeling the pressure on their wallets as word of our commitment to pay thriveable wages to our employees had spread across the region. Now, what had historically been a source of cheap coffee to add to their annual harvests numbers was disappearing as well. Our goal had never been to disrupt the predatory coffee industry’s buying practices in our region. Our only goal was to bless as many families as possible with a truly thriveable wage for their labor and a fair price for their coffee.
When it was time to see who wanted to sell us their 2020/21 harvest we were blessed to have enough demand in the US that we could buy from other producers on the mountain who did not work for us but who were our neighbors, our friends, and who had learned about our commitment to pay a premium for coffee over what the cooperative paid. Once again our farm was set on fire but we were fortunate and the wind cooperated with us and the fire was quickly controlled. It was painful to do but we couldn’t afford not to, so in 2021 we invested around $20,000 in cutting a network of new roads across the land our farm sits on to serve as firebreaks, a process that took a large bulldozer nearly a month to complete. These breaks, averaging 12 - 14 feet wide, would hopefully slow the advance of future fires as well as allow us to get closer to any future fires with our trucks, tools, and equipment.
When our farm manager Nohelia went to sign contracts to buy the 2021/22 harvest she returned concerned. The farmers who had previously sold us their coffee reported that the coffee cooperative was now matching our rate. I let her know that this was not a problem, that this was a good thing, that our little farm was now affecting the price being paid across our mountain. In response we raised our price per pound by $0.25. Once again in the later part of the 2022 dry season the farm was set on fire and once again we were fortunate to be able to get it controlled before it reached our rows of coffee.
With the 2022/23 harvest season approaching Nohelia once again went to visit farmers to sign contracts to buy their harvest and to our surprise once again the coffee cooperative had increased the price that they were offering to pay farmers for their coffee and once again in response we increased the price that we would pay. The gratitude that was expressed to us by every farmer was touching. They felt that they had a future, that they had dignity, and that they were no longer invisible. At the same time the cooperative had not only offered higher rates for coffee on our mountain but also throughout the coffee growing region of southern Honduras. And to our surprise we received an amicable phone call from the cooperative manager who stated, “you all truly are paying a fair rate for coffee”. He then went on to inquire if we’d be interested in sourcing coffee from the cooperative, to which we politely declined. I felt a great deal of satisfaction knowing that it would take many years of growth for our farm to bless the entire coffee growing region of southern Honduras with a fair rate for their coffee but that due to our commitment to those we were working with our farm had been the catalyst for a cascading effect effect on the coffee growing economy throughout our region. That every farmer, no matter how small, who sold their coffee to the cooperative was now getting a much more sustainable rate for their coffee.
It wasn’t a surprise when this year once again a fire was set on our farm. What was a surprise was the proximity where the fire was set to our rows of coffee. The arsonist had been brazen in risking being seen when the fire was set. What they didn’t take into consideration was the effectiveness of the firebreaks that we had put in a few years ago. And while we had hoped that they would be effective at slowing a fire they had not yet been put to the test. When I arrived at the farm last week, only a few days after it was controlled, I was overwhelmed by sight of the scorched mountainside and fallen scorched tree trunks but at the same time thankful to see that the fire had followed the edge of the new fire breaks without ever crossing them. This year’s fire got to within about 300 yards of our rows of coffee but once again our farm was spared, we thank God for that.
We also thank God for everyone who purchases our coffee. We recognize that it’s not the cheapest option around but neither is it the most expensive. And we hope that you recognize that your purchase of San Lazaro Coffee is truly having a lasting impact on the families that are represented in our faithful crew of 21 women who work our farm day in and day out. And amazingly enough, your purchase has, is, and will continue to impact every coffee farmer in our region of southern Honduras as they have now been given a voice to demand more for their coffee. Thank you for believing in our company and our commitment to Bring Eternal Worth to Light through a coffee farm in southern Honduras.

ICC T20 WORLD CUP 2021
Although the Indian Cricket Team had won nine T-20 International games, Men in Blue still have to do a lot to win next year’s ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
As the Men in Blue clinched the T-20 series against Australia, Indian fans finally breathed a sigh of relief on December 6. In the second game of the series, the Indian team was impressive as they were hunting down a massive score of 194.
Sunday’s victory against Australia indicated that India had secured nine T20 games in the long run.
However, the team still needs to do a lot of work to be able to become the strongest T-20 team in the world and win the World Cup at home in 2021.
India will get a chance to further strengthen the team during the five-match home series against England after the series in Australia.
Here are couple of things that India need to keep in mind before the tournament.
The Indian team should have an aggressive approach to offer no breathing space to the opposition especially when they have a lot of wickets in hand.
Together with an aggressive approach, the selection committee should also assist the team by making bold decisions. The selection committee needs to offer more chances to the likes of Surya Kumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, and Sanju Samson to have explosive batsmen around Kohli.
These two improvements will not guarantee success but by introducing them sooner rather than later, the probability of winning will certainly increase.
