The swelling had finally gone down. Even still, Lee felt like his eye had a slight throb to it, though it was most likely in his mind (or, at least, that was what he was telling himself). It subsided a bit when he closed his eyes, and so he had no issue doing so, leaning back into the seat of the train.
It had turned out to be mostly paperwork and stature, after all. He was a tall, broad Victor, and so the Vox's protocols had kicked into place, and with no one really around to vouch for him, Lee had been left in the cell for much longer than others. But eventually they got around to him, he was able to swear his allegiance or whatever, and he was allowed to continue with his life.
Or rather, he realized, to start it anew. There were no more Games to Mentor. He was hardly a Victor, now, even. He was... Lee Hatchett. And so when they had offered to let him simply... go home? He had leapt at the chance. He was on the first train to Seven that he could muster.
The door to the cabin slid open quietly, but not quiet enough to escape his notice. He cracked one eye open and his heart fell to his stomach. Alder Reid, who he had not seen since the attack. Alder Reid, who he had had zero information about since the Vox took over.
Alder Reid was alive.
Lee's arms were around Alder before his brain processed that he had stood, rushed forward, and started crying. Alder Reid was alive. "Alder," he gasped. "Alder. Alder... oh my god. Alder."

Legends and myths about trees
Celtic beliefs in trees (6)
Ogham alphabet and tree calendar
The Ogham alphabet is the most ancient Irish writing script. There, every letter of the alphabet is associated with the name of a tree, and for this reason, ogam is sometimes known as the Celtic tree alphabet.
The ogham script was a secret means of communication for the druids and also a key to the spirit world.
There are roughly 400 surviving orthodox inscriptions on stone monuments throughout Ireland and western Britain, the bulk of which are in southern Munster. The largest number outside Ireland are in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
Details of the Celtic tree calendar are as follows:
B for Beth (Birch) - December 24th - January 20th
L for Luis (Rowan) - January 21st - February 17th
N for Nion (Ash) - February 18th - March 17th
O for Onn (Golden Gorse) - March 21st Spring Equinox
F for Fearn (Alder) - March 18th - April 14th
S for Saille (Willow) - April 15th - May 12th
H for Huath (Hawthorn) - May 13th - June 9th
D for Duir (Royal Oak) - June 10th - July 17th
U for Ura (Heather) - June 21st Summer Solstice
T for Tinne (Holly) - July 18th - August 5th
C for Coll (Hazel) - August 5th - September 1st
Q for Quert (Apple) - September 2nd - September 29th
E for Eadha (Aspen) - September 21st Autumn Equinox
G for Gort (Ivy) - September 30th - October 27th
Ng for Ngetl (Broom) - October 28th - November 24th

RED WHITE & BLUE
Chp. 1: All Roads Lead to Perseus
FrankWoods × FemaleReader (Kind of reads like an OC but there’s no detailed description)
Chapter Summary: You’ve talked the talk with Adler, Mason, and Woods. Now you’ve gotta prepare to walk the walk…
Warnings: eventual SMUT, age difference, descriptions of gore, sex, and violent military actions/CIA stuff, trauma, strong language.
Tags: Slow Burn (sorry lol)
Word Count: 777
Series Masterlist
A/N: This is just an idea I had for a story but if y’all like it I will definitely continue :)
————————————————————————————
You sit in the cool air conditioned briefing room, your eyes darting around as you take in the faces of the other operatives seated at the table with you. This was your first briefing as part of the CIA's clandestine task force, and you couldn't help but feel out of place amongst the seasoned veterans.
What if they think you’re too young or under qualified? The thoughts occupied your head the entire time
Your thoughts are interrupted as the door opens and three agents walk in. You recognize them almost instantly. Russell Adler, the leader of your team. Through his aviators he nods curtly in your direction, before taking a seat at the head of the table. Alex Mason takes his seat across from you followed by Sgt. Frank Woods, who catches your attention embarrassingly quick. You shake it off and turn to face Adler.
He begins to speak his voice gruff and no-nonsense. "I'm sure you’re all thrilled to be here.” He reaches into the pocket of his leather jacket, pulling out a package of cigarettes.
You swallow unknowingly, feeling the weight of whatever task was ahead of you. You were a cargo pilot, not an active combat soldier. But the CIA had to have seen something worth their time to have picked you to be here.
“6 weeks ago 3 sleeper agents were discovered somewhere in the San Francisco area” Adler continues. “None of which were names on the list that was retrieved from the Lubyanka building, last year.” You lean forward, listening intently as Adler distributes files and photos across the table. The images show three seemingly ordinary individuals, but you knew better. They were highly trained operatives, trained to blend in and cause chaos when needed.
“All roads lead to Perseus.” Agent Mason speaks up. You recognize him from the files you had received upon speaking with a lead agent.
“Exactly. Except now, Perseus lives on as a network of people under the Soviet government. After the mess we caused last time its gonna be tremendously more difficult to get in and out of Soviet airspace under cover.” Adler suddenly turns to you. “That’s where you come in.”
“Gentlemen,” He continues. “This is Lt. Y/N L/N, callsign ‘Red’. She is an Air Force pilot and our newest recruit.”
You nod your hellos around the table, stopping a beat too long when your eyes stop at a pair of bright blue ones; Sgt. Frank Woods. You can feel a flutter of attraction in your chest. He lets his gaze wonder a bit farther, taking in the way you sit in your seat, almost crossing your legs a little lighter. You try to shake it off, reminding yourself that this was a professional environment and you couldn't afford any distractions.
Adler clears his throat, bringing your attention back to the briefing. “Red here, created a way to advance an aircraft to be flown without being detected by radars, regardless of stealth capabilities.”
“No offense Lieutenant, but is that even possible?” Agent Mason adds, looking over to you. Alder nods to you, giving you the floor.
You take a deep breath before answering. “It is. I developed a system that manipulates the aircraft’s radar signature to mimic or disguise a flight. It's a combination of software and hardware modifications and it’s been successfully tested in simulations as well as physical flight.”
The room falls silent for a moment as everyone processes your answer. Mason nods thoughtfully, “That could be our way in.” He says.
“We need to infiltrate the Soviet airspace undetected, and my system could give us the advantage we need.” You add, now more confidently.
Woods leans forward, looking at you with a raised eyebrow from across the conference table. “How do you plan on flying this mission? You're a cargo pilot, not a fighter pilot.” He almost sounds like he’s testing you.
You meet his gaze steadily, feeling a flicker of irritation at being underestimated. “I can fly whatever is needed of me, Sgt. Woods. I’m here because I have skills that can contribute to this mission, and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to succeed.”
Wood’s dark eyebrows rise, a hint of a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. “Good stuff, kid.” You can't help but feel a sense of satisfaction at his approval.
Turning your attention back to Adler, it's clear that the stakes are high, and failure is not an option. “Tonight, get all of your affairs in order. We load up 0600 tomorrow.”
As the briefing comes to an end, you can't help but feel a mix of excitement and nerves.

After more than 6 years I managed to find a way to play the sims 2 again as it is apparently impossible to quit playing it. Andddd I come with a very niche default/mod I have created to suit my playing needs a bit more.
Nobody would bat an eye at people named Rose, Max, Summer, Daisy, Victor etc. Yet, they all have a literal meaning, and they are not the only ones. Across cultures, people have been naming their children after literal things, feelings, adjectives, virtues and more, so why would Tulip be any weirder than Rose? I love giving my sims names that we would consider quirky or strange so I created a name replacement mod so you can too if you want to!
This mod will replace the default names the game gives new townies and NPCs that have their own name. The default includes 200 female surnames, 200 male surnames and 230 lastnames (for both genders). Keep in mind that it will only work on townies and NPCs that generate after you've installed this mod.
★ Download ★ SFS or MTS ★ What kind of names can I expect? ★ I chose names ranging from just a bit unique, to downright weird. I was inspired by nature, outer space, the weather, food, animals, math, random adjectives, colors and more! You can see a selection of some of the names that my game generated in the image. A full list is included in the download. A few names are both in the list for women and men as I found them genderneutral. 15 random female names: Bunny Drama Stella Rune Olive Amber Enigma Tulip Spring Birdy Fig Vivid Sake Mu Farce 15 random male names: Waffle Ash Zero Hydro Halt Rune Oak Ox Tau Bay Car Blend Comet Cress 15 random last names: Cloverfield Oats Oregano Raspberry Alder Cantaloupe Boulder Hush Smoke Marigold Pisces Gingerbread Seas Sapphire Delight ★ How to install? ★ Chuck the live.package in your downloads folder. Do not change its name. You can only have one name replacement at the same time. ★ I don't like these names, I want to make my own ★ Sure! It's quite easy. You can follow this tutorial by ijustneedsomeeyes: https://modthesims.info/t/518283

Biddy Math
When a Biddy nears death and eventually dies, Alder takes those years back. (There is no sign in 1x3, 1x10, 2x1, or 2x8 that this strain is redistributed to the other Biddies when one of their own is injured or dies. They only take on stress that is directly inflicted upon Alder.)
Therefore, the bare minimum requirement for the Biddy program is that if one Biddy dies, Alder will not die just by taking on those years. Assuming an equal sharing of Alder's life force (not necessarily a safe one to make, given that the Marshal's setup is so different), then this means that Alder doubles her physical years when a Biddy dies. Therefore, the number of biddies is defined by what is half of life expectancy, plus some number of buffer years so that Alder isn't on death's door just from losing one Biddy.
Delicious numbers, analysis, and graphs under the cut. Click through to see exactly which years Alder probably increased the number of Biddies over time! Now with bonus "how much is Alder drinking" potshots!
To decide some things, we can bypass life expectancy at younger ages, because those numbers are the product of mortality rates, which include causes of death other than old age. Because in the Biddy process, people proceed directly to old age, we can look at life expectancy for people who already survived to that old age.
x = Alder's total age n = Total number of people sharing life force (number of biddies plus 1 for Alder herself) Alder's physical age = A = x/n L = life expectancy (most probable age of death) s = safety buffer L-s = Age at which a person is expected to still live for another s years L-s = The age Alder will become if a Biddy dies = 2A = 2x/n
For Life Expectancy numbers, I looked at the Human Mortality Database. Here is the full citation:
HMD. Human Mortality Database. Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (Germany), University of California, Berkeley (USA), and French Institute for Demographic Studies (France). Available at www.mortality.org. See also the methods protocol: Wilmoth, J. R., Andreev, K., Jdanov, D., Glei, D. A., Riffe, T., Boe, C., Bubenheim, M., Philipov, D., Shkolnikov, V., Vachon, P., Winant, C., & Barbieri, M. (2021). Methods protocol for the human mortality database (v6). Available online (needs log in to mortality.org).
For most all of the datasets I looked at, "Expected to live 5 more years" correlated to a ~10% mortality rate (that 1 in 10 people of that age died that year). So a 5 year safety buffer seems reasonable.
So, for example, I look at the US females dataset. I go to 2019 (the year the show started, and also to avoid the influence of the pandemic). In the dataset, the age at which they are expected to live 5 more years is 89. This is our (L-s) term. So, the physical age that Alder is safe to be at in 2019 is at most 89/2 = 44.5. (Lyne was 40 in 2019.)
If we assume that Alder was 18 years old when she signed the Salem Accords in 1692 (in order to codify conscription age to match hers), then in 2019 she is 345 years old. When we divide 345 by 44.5, to see how many total parties need to share those years equally, we get 7.625, which rounds up to 8. And well well well, that makes for Alder and 7 Biddies. Eliot did his math!
Something Eliot didn't quite do his math on, though, is his claim in After the Storm 1x3 that Biddies only tend to last 5-6 years. In 2019, Tally (somewhere between 18 and 19 years old) picking up 44.5 years upon getting Biddy'd means that she was physically…somewhere around 63 years old! In the US, 63 year ladies could expect to live another 23 years, to age 86! In order to get back down to the "less than 6 years to live as a Biddy" range, we would have to assume that the stress of military combat and also Alder's alcoholic liver would lop off another 17 years from their natural life expectancy. No I am not going to research how muchFine, let's find out how much Alder is drinking in order to destroy 20 year old candidates in 5-6 years.
Found an online calculator that cites this study:
Westman J, Wahlbeck K, Laursen TM, Gissler M, Nordentoft M, Hällgren J, Arffman M, Ösby U. Mortality and life expectancy of people with alcohol use disorder in Denmark, Finland and Sweden.; Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica; April 2015
For a person to start drinking at age 63 and shorten their lifespan from 86 to 69 years, Alder is pounding at least 9 doses a day (but that would also only be enough to kill one Biddy! do we need to multiply that by seven...). Per NIAAA, a dose is 0.6 ounces of pure alcohol, which averages 5 ounces of wine and um only 1.5 ounces (a shot glass) or less of liquors like whiskey.
Alder famously ends up downing both of these glasses in this scene.
Sarah. Sarah. How many fucking doses is that, Sarah!? ("the height of two fingers against a regular sized glass is about 2 fl oz", so these glasses are probably "neat" pours, and she took 4 ounces in the Petra scene, and 2 ounces above. But we also know from Tally that "she loves her wine" and probably has it daily during at least breakfast with Anacostia, if not also at all other scheduled meals.)
...Okay, crack tangent over. Biddy candidate age speculation! Well, we started this whole thing with the assumption that when Alder takes back her years from a Biddy, she basically becomes Biddy age, with 5 years ahead of her (matching the expected years of service that Eliot quoted, eh). Which means that, really, Biddy candidates following that pattern should just be Alder's physical age? Whomst 44 year old Biddy candidates lmao. And even if we include that extra 10 year buffer for Alder's alcoholic liver combat stress, the standard Biddy candidate (looking forward to only 5-6 years of service) would just be whatever is 10 years younger than Alder's physical age. In 2019 that would be at most 34 years old, not anything near conscript age.
Here's another analysis angle, because why not: If we assume that Alder is actually frozen in time and only the Biddies are ageing for her, then 7 biddies are ageing 1.143 years for every year. So they need to actually have 6 years left in them to live 5 years of real time. With that conservative 5 year estimate, the Biddy that died in 1x3 (in 2019) became a Biddy around 2014.
Going back to our mortality tables, in 2014, the age at which a US woman would have 6 years left is 87. If we just lop those 10 years of stress, 77. The age at which they would have 16 years left is 71, which demonstrates how causes of death not of old age like alcoholism come into play a lot more the younger we look. Or there's also a survival bias at play. But it would be real awkward if someone had a genetic/health issue where they would naturally die in their late 60s/early 70s, so they keeled over right after getting Biddy'd. I'm sure the candidate screening process is mostly about avoiding that. Still, in 2014 less than 2% of 71 year olds died, so.
Working backwards to lop off the 44.5 years of Alder's life they're carrying, then the recruitment candidates for that Biddy could have been anywhere from 26-31 years old (with the 10 extra stress years). If we don't, then back to the 40-47 year old range. So yes, Anacostia could have maybe been a viable Biddy candidate, at least on age alone?
The way these are all probabilities means that the stars might align to maximize the longer lifespan of an individual against the age at which they were recruited. If they were playing it real safe and going younger, then a Biddy could serve for 10 years before succumbing to old age. See again how Tally could have had multiple decades ahead of her as a Biddy. That doesn't seem to be the norm, if Eliot is saying that 5-6 is the expectation, but maybe Biddy lifespan increased over the years as life expectancy for the elderly rose.
Here's where it gets…tricky. The Human Mortality Database is very fastidious with their data, and it turns out that most nations didn't keep/take very good records before 1950. The US data set doesn't begin until 1933, which means that I need to look elsewhere for the 200 years before that. The UK and Scotland are obvious choices, given the surname Alder. UK data begins in 1922 when they began merging the various realms of the Isles, which is why the Scotland data actually ends in 1930, when it got folded in. After that, it was mostly finding any European data at all that exists before the 1920s. I picked England+Wales and France, as both made it into the mid-1800s. And finally, the earliest dataset HMD has is Sweden, which somehow went back to 1751. As with the US dataset, I grabbed the oldest age for every year at which the remaining life expectancy was at least 5 years.
This is where I ran into some issues. You can see in the graph above that the Scotland, England, and Sweden data all show a rise in the life expectancy 60 years before the US, France, and the UK do. This is likely due to sampling bias in the older data, but I still have to decide what to do for this analysis. From the graph, you can see that I just averaged the England and France data to split the difference, and it looks like a plausible trend to the US data. Besides, the amplitude of the difference is only a 5-10 year spread, which gets divided out to a couple of years difference per Biddy, which is then well within natural spreads of lifespan. When I perform the calculations to get Alder's physical age from these estimations, it remains quite stable between the 40-45 range.
At any rate, I strongly suspect that Eliot may have looked at the same datasets as I did, because the earliest data point is, as said before, Sweden in 1751. In 1751, Alder would be 77 years old. And what is the life expectancy with a 5 year buffer for 1751? 77.
It's hard to imagine that Alder would have let herself become 77 years old as an active combatant, particularly as we know she looked like her 40-something self crossing the Delaware and when she created the Mycelium after pushing the British back, which according to 1x8, took place around 1735, when she would have been 61. If she had just one Biddy that year, with an even life force split she would have been physically 30.5.
If we go back to that Sweden dataset, the calculated death age for people between 18 and 40 is fairly stable between 60-65 until the 1800s, is that way in France until the late 1800s, and those numbers are likely a lot lower in a much less established region like the Americas. Alder herself would have seen that in the people around her, so it would make sense for her to take on the Biddy program fairly in advance of that. I wouldn't be surprised if she set up contingencies in her 40s, in her 50s at the latest.
(An alternative theory, given the wonkiness of some lore claiming that the Biddy working was shared in exchanged for the Cession in the 1830s when Alder was already over 130 years old, is that Alder used other means to prolong her life before getting Biddies, such as whatever made her be linked to Fort Salem's fauna and flora, not to mention the fact that when she lost all of her Biddies she turned to wood, not dust. Those seem to be separate workings from the Biddy program, and given that alder trees typically live between 60 to 80 years, some reaching 100 years, then the need to switch over to Biddies around then makes sense.)
But finally, what you're all actually here for: a graph of Alder's physical age and when she would have to increase the number of Biddies over time, as influenced by changing elderly life expectancy over time. (Note that if she indeed did not get Biddies until the 1830s, then she went from zero to 4 Biddies at once.)

My very legit Nintendo DSi Enhanced and totally existent physical cartridge with the game Pokémon White stopped chugging and crashing every 5 minutes just after I left Mistralton, so I guess the town was the issue. We continue on to POKEMON WHITE DAY 6. A lot of things happened today, so I'll put it all under a break.
Cheren and I went down into the bowels of Twist Mountain and witnessed a fascinating chunk of ice; of all the ice I've seen in my life, that was some of it! I could tell something was bothering Cher, but I didn't want to pry. Then Team Pokemon Rights Terrorism showed up when we were just leaving, which made things a little awkward, but we dispatched them quickly, and Ruby evolved into Emboar. Cher and I parted ways then, and then I got to Icirrus and went straight to the gym because it looked like it was about to rain.
Ruby and Jasper went wild on the baby bears and snowflakes, with the rest of my team watching enthusiastically -- Yuri going so far as to act as a cheerleader for them. It was really cute, especially when Jasper volunteered to once again solo the battle vs the leader (Brycen's Beartic threatened Ruby with Brine and Moxie is very convenient). She actually evolved mid-fight, as soon as she knocked out Cryogonal, and it was such a hype moment I jumped to celebrate, slipped on the ice and fell on my butt. Good times. Ow.
Cher and Bianca were arriving just as I was leaving, and by their looks I knew the conversation was going to be important. Cher shyly said, and I quote, "a lot of soul-searching has been done" since we'd first bumped into Champion Alder and had a heart to heart about how we wanted to live our lives (this happened a few days ago, I didn't mention it because it didn't seem important. But old people are awesome), and with a bit of encouragement from Bianca, quietly came out as trans. I was like "oh. Cool, me too. Can we get out of the rain now?", because it was pouring and we were soaking wet.
And we were going to, but then freelance ninjas hired by team Plasma ambushed us and said N was waiting for me at the Dragonspire Tower. A few emotions were running high at the moment, and Cher stomped ahead furious. Bianca looked at the verge of a panic attack, so I left her at the Pokemon Center with Professor Juniper Senior and ran after Cher, Brycen right after me.
The Tower was besieged with grunts. We beat some of them up and Ferb evolved in the process, finally making team EAGLES into the best version of themselves. But progress was slow and so Cher and Brycen stayed behind to stall them while I snuck my way up to the top, where something very large and very furious was throwing a tantrum. At the very top I found N talking to a LARGE FUCKOFF WYVERN-HORSE THING who is apparently Reshiram. N said something about wanting me to challenge him -- I have no idea what he wants from me, I'm just a guy. I think deep down he knows what he's doing is wrong and wants someone to stop him, and I just so happened to be there that one time in Accumula, so he picked me to be his rival. Which technically makes me Enemy of the Crown, huh.
Oh boy. I hope my mom is not in a dungeon somewhere.
Anyway, they left, then we gathered and left to the Pokecenter, and Alder conveniently showed up with another half of the legend that says a second Legendary, Zekrom, will respond to whoever gets a Dark Stone from Relic Castle. Knowing that this whole thing has been made my business by The King of Unova himself, I had no choice but to go. I bid farewell to the elders and the girls, flew back to Nimbasa and walked back to the Desert Resort to be absorbed by the shifting sands of the Relic Castle and fulfill my destiny, or whatever.
Team EAGLES, at last:
Ruby (Emboar F, lv 39)
Ferb (Archeops M, lv 39)
Lilo (Galvantula F, lv 39)
Yuri (Lilligant, lv 39)
Orion (Excadrill M, lv 39)
Jasper (Scrafty F, lv 39)
P.S.: I realize I don't have an active pokemon that can learn Surf. this is fine, Prince (my service Herdier) can aid me in that regard.

Wausau alders offer sharp rebuke after T. Wall accusations
Some council members are baffled by the behavior of Mr. Wall, who previously filed an ethics complaint that centered on distributing candy bars at a meeting.
By Shereen Siewert | Wausau Pilot & Review Statements made by Madison-based developer Terrence Wall accusing two alders of illegal actions regarding a downtown development have drawn strong criticism from some city leaders who appear increasingly frustrated with his behavior. “I am perplexed regarding your repeated vitriolic statements against two members of council,” Dist. 6 Alder Becky…

A/N: Kept on trucking, and already I'm close to ending this series! This is the most fun I had writing an original piece TBH, let alone a chaptered one! Again, thank you so much, readers, for checking this out and all the comments, likes, and reblogs on this! Without further ado, ENJOY!
WARNINGS: BLOOD, MINOR CHARACTER DEATH, INJURY, SLIGHT EYE GORE
______
"One bowl of gruel coming!" A guardsman's voice echoed throughout the dungeon. The guardsman--a lower one judging by his blue armor--approached the two cells, holding a bowl of cold gruel in his hands.
Alder was on the ground, his back still full of gashes from his torture hours ago. Blood had trickled down from his wounds, with red pooling around his body. While he was alive, he didn't stir when he heard the guardsman's voice.
The guardsman came up to Hawthorn's cell... and noticed Hawthorn lying on the ground. The man's eyes studied Hawthorn's unmoving body for a second.
There was no sign of breathing.
"Shit!" The guardsman cried. Dropping the bowl of gruel on the floor carelessly, he fumbled to get the key to Hawthorn's cell. As he was doing so, Alder overheard the commotion, and glanced up. Upon seeing Hawthorn's body, his eyes widened and he let out a gasp.
"Hawy?!" Alder cried. What happened? Was Hawthorn really dead? If so, how did he die?
The guardsman finally opened the door, and he rushed in. He knelt down to Hawthorn, shaking him.
"Hey!" He called, "Get up! I know you're not dead, you hear?!"
"I know." Hawthorn responded, opening his eyes suddenly, a smirk on his face.
Without warning, he got up and grabbed the guardsman by the throat, squeezing it. The guardsman choked out, trying to call for help from his allies. Hawthorn, in a quick motion, rammed him into the wall and the guardsman slammed his head on it. Multiple times.
After a few more slams, the guardsman went still. Whether he was dead or not, Hawthorn didn't care. He got what he needed.
He dropped the dead or unconscious guardsman before he began to dig through his pockets. His fingers eventually brushed up to the steel, and he pulled out the key to Alder's cell.
He left his opened cell and approached Alder's. As he began to unlock it, he saw Alder's eyes wide in shock. Hawthorn had done some things in the past, such as stealing, but he had never done anything like this.
Finally, after a minute, he opened Alder's cell, and ran in. He knelt down to Alder, assessing the damage Alder got from his tortures.
"Are you okay?" Hawthorn asked, helping Alder to his feet. However, the taller man stumbled and would have fell back down on the floor if Hawthorn hadn't grabbed him. "Shit..." Hawthorn whispered upon seeing how much pain Alder was in.
This is my fault. He's hurt because of me...
"Hawy..." Alder whispered, flinching in pain. If only Hawthorn knew white magic, he would have healed Alder on the spot.
"Hang on," Hawthorn whispered. "I got you. We're getting out of here."
As Hawthorn began to stand, Alder stopped him by not standing himself. Hawthorn looked at him, and Alder shook his head.
"No..." Alder said. "I will only slow you down. Go. Leave me here. Take care of--"
"Don't say that, Alder!" Hawthorn cried. "I'm getting us both out of here, and nothing you say will stop me!"
"But I am hurt--"
"I know, love," Hawthorn said, guilt evident in his voice. Thankfully, Alder didn't pick up on it as Hawthorn continued, "but I'm getting us both out of this no matter what."
This whole mess was my fault anyway...
He helped Alder wrap his arms around his torso, before he lifted him up on his back. Despite how heavy Alder was, Hawthorn managed to keep his balance as he ran out of the cell.
"I know where to go," Hawthorn reassured. "We'll escape this, Aldy. I promise."
_______
Hawthorn knew of the many secret passageways in this dungeon. During his few years of captivity here, he studied them, noting in his mind on where they are and where they go. King Brennus was an observant man--he had to make this escape count.
He pushed a loose rock that was near the entrance of the dungeon, and a secret passageway opened. He knew the risks--if he entered, he wouldn't be able to close the passageway, and the guardsmen would eventually notice and follow. But he had no other choice. The other secret passageways were either outside the dungeon, or were blocked off by something.
He knew that King Brennus would block off the others. This passageway was his only option.
He ran down the stairs, his heart beating wildly against his chest. Alder's body weight slowed him down somewhat, but Hawthorn was determined. They had to get away.
Adrenaline pumped in his veins as he continued to run towards the end of the small passageway, and eventually, he came across a door. Without a moment wasted, he opened it.
Light shone from outside, nearly blinding Hawthorn for a second. He paused, trying to adjust to the light. He knew he was wasting precious seconds but he couldn't just run off blindly. Literally.
Once he was adjusted, he ran off, Alder still in tow. Into the nearby forest. Where The Fierce Forests lived.
_____
It felt like hours as Hawthorn ran through the forest. He breathed heavily as he continued to run, Alder's limp body on his back not helping his breathing.
Apparently, Alder had passed out. Hawthorn tried to whisper to his beloved that they were almost there, that they were out, but Alder didn't answer.
This made Hawthorn hurry. If Alder passed out from his wounds, he had to get back to the fort that was deep in the forest to get him treated. Who knew how much longer Alder could hold on?
Despite how huge the forest was, Hawthorn knew his way around. Living in this forest for a few years could do that to someone. Left, right, left, left. Right, right, left, left.
He kept running. Left, right, right, left--
He stopped, his eyes widened upon seeing what was in front of him.
A river blocked his path.
Of fucking course... I forgot.
If he was by himself, crossing the river would be no problem. He had done it many times.
But with Alder on his back? It would be more difficult.
He had to find another way. Maybe if he ran back, he would--
"I see someone up ahead!"
"Are they the fugitives?!"
Shit shit SHIT!
The guardsmen were coming. How did they find them? Did Hawthorn leave behind something that led a trail?
Hawthorn turned, and sure enough, there was a small trail of blood that was up to his feet. Alder's blood.
"There they are!"
Hawthorn glanced up, and saw about ten men running towards the two. Their swords and lances were out, ready to strike down Hawthorn and Alder when they were close enough.
He looked back at the river, then at the guardsmen fast approaching. He didn't have any other option here, and he had no time to think.
I have no choice.
Without another thought, he jumped right into the freezing water. His head was under the surface for a moment before he emerged, gasping for breath. He touched Alder's arms around his waist and relief filled him. Alder was still with him.
He began to swim to the other side as best as he could with Alder on his back. Thankfully, the currents weren't strong, so he would have no problem swimming through it.
"Hey!" One guardsman yelled. "Get back here!"
Hawthorn didn't listen as he kept on swimming. Behind him, Alder's blood was mixed in the water, tainting it red. Hawthorn hurried his swimming upon seeing this.
Alder was losing more blood than he had realized. He needed to hurry.
"Someone get those two!"
"And swim in that? Are you nuts?!"
"You're a godsdamned guardsman! Why are you so afraid of blood?!"
As the guardsmen bickered amongst themselves, Hawthorn managed to reach the end, and he grabbed the dirt ledge of land. With as much strength as he could muster, he pulled himself and Alder up. Once his knees hit safe ground, he took a moment to take a few breaths. Surely, the guards wouldn't be able to--
Splash!
You've gotta be kidding me...
Hawthorn didn't even bother to turn to the noise; he was sure that the guardsmen were in hot pursuit now. He jumped to his feet before he continued to run. He was close. So close he could feel it. Once he reached The Fierce Forests' fort, he would be able to--
Searing pain hit his right arm, and he cried out in pain. Due to the exhaustion and the pain from his previous tortures, he fell to the ground. Blood began to slowly pool from his newly obtained wound. Dug deep into his skin was an arrow.
His vision began to fade, but he held on. He was so close. So damn close. Just a few more feet and--
He felt someone hold his body down on the forest floor, preventing him from getting back up. He saw multiple pairs of boots surround him, with their owners chuckling at their catch.
FUCK!
"Thought you could get away, eh?" One guardsman laughed, before Hawthorn could feel the weight lifted off of his back.
Alder! No!
He began to struggle as another guardsman picked him up from the ground, his hands holding his arms behind his back painfully. However, due to his strength being sapped from everything today, he could only struggle weakly.
He saw the guardsman who took Alder place him over his shoulder, and Hawthorn's heart ached.
He failed. Not only did he put himself and Alder in this entire thing, but now he ended up getting them caught. All he could do now was accept their fates, and hope that The Fierce Forests could save them before it was too late.
Alder... I'm so sorry...
The man holding Hawthorn held out a hand, readying a Sleep spell--
"NOW!"
A voice called out suddenly, and the man that held Hawthorn fell to the ground. Embedded in his left eye was an arrow, blood dripping down his face. Hawthorn also fell to the ground, and remained there.
The guardsman holding Alder also fell to the ground, dead. This time, by a Lightning spell that hit him squarely in the chest. Alder too fell to the ground beside the guardsman, still unconscious.
"Dammit!" One guardsman cried. "They're not alone--" Hawthorn heard gurgling noises before the guardsman could finish his sentence. Blood splashed on the forest floor in front of him.
He heard yells and screams, along with the clashing of swords and the crackling of magic around him. His vision began to blacken again, but he held on.
What's happening? Are we saved...?
The last thing he saw was a pair of brown boots stepping in front of Hawthorn before consciousness slipped away.
