Just then, the baby made his presence known. Mulder's eyes snapped downward to the place where he felt the unfamiliar movement.

"He definitely knows his father," she told him.

He sat spellbound, with his hand and full attention still on her stomach.

"Mulder..."

"Shhhh...." he hushed her softly.

AU-- Mulder is returned unresponsive... unless Scully is in danger.

Revelation

Mulder's eyes glanced sparingly at her swollen belly...much as he had done since he found out about her pregnancy. But he never seemed to want to talk about it. He just listened as she told him everything-- how the baby was healthy and how she had waited so long to share it with him.

Three Words Scully realizes that while Mulder is supportive, he hasn't put the puzzle pieces together.

Donna's

Waking

Whatever had happened, he felt like he had been out of it for a long time, too long. Scully was . . . she wasn't herself. He didn't feel up to asking the questions that he needed to ask, not yet. Whatever had happened all he really cared about right now was the feel of her against him.

Deadalive Mulder wakes.

Unspoken Words

He lay his arm over his eyes. He could do this. He could be happy for her and her baby. He could give her the support she needed, at least what she'd take from him. If the baby's father allowed it, he'd take the kid to Little League or soccer; maybe she'd even trust him to baby-sit. He could learn to change diapers. He'd be okay; he'd make this work and accept whatever she gave him. He didn't realize tears were running into his hair until he heard one hit the couch. No one would ever know he'd cried himself to sleep.

Three Words Mulder (politely) asks for space.

She drew back, staring at him as tears formed in her eyes and spilled over.

The Only Choice - Chapter 40

Just as a soft smile appeared on his face, Mulder recognized apprehension in her eyes. His brow furrowed in concern and then he took in her appearance. In that moment every thought in his mind melded into a mass of bewilderment and confusion. He didn’t understand. He didn’t understand anything and the fear brought about by his nightmare seemed to crash down on him. His heart rate increased and his hands shook. He had never had a panic attack, but he was beginning to feel like this must be one.

The Only Choice - Chapter 41

He knew that she could infer that some memories were returning and that they were troubling him, but how could he talk to her about such things? He couldn’t put her through that. He couldn’t even talk to her about the proverbial elephant in the room. (A phrase he best not use in front of her if he wished to walk out of this hospital of his own volition). There were so many questions he had, and he was a coward because he was afraid of the answers. He was afraid that the baby wasn’t his. He knew better than to believe that there was another man, but another try at IVF was always a possibility. They were going to look into adoption, but what if she decided to give it another shot on her own. What if she didn’t want him involved? Especially now with the state he was in.

The Only Choice - Chapter 42

“You’re going to be okay, Dana. All three of you,” Maggie said, placing a comforting kiss to her daughter’s temple. “Do you want me to talk to him?” she asked with quirk to her eyebrow.

Scully chuckled and wiped away a rogue tear. “Oh no, I don’t think he’s ready for the mom lecture yet. I know you. You’ll go in all nice and sweet with the best intentions, but it will totally turn into a ‘how dare you treat my daughter like this’ conversation.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Maggie replied innocently.

"He, who?" She pursed her lips for an instant, then gasped as she realized what he was saying. "Oh, Mulder! I'm sorry...I meant..." She felt the prickling of a full, scarlet blush across her face. "All the science in the world can't replace the real thing, Mulder." When she saw no inkling of comprehension on his face, she added: "And we had the real thing, on more than one occasion." "We...I...we..."

His eyes widened and his mouth turned up in a huge grin.

Mad About You

He felt hollow inside. He knew how much she had wanted a child, how he had supported her through saving her ova, agreeing to be the sperm donor – agreeing to have a child with her, even though they hadn’t been together at that point. He remembered how shocked he had been when she had finally summed up the courage to ask him, how confused it had made him about their relationship, and yet how saying 'yes' was a no-brainer, even though he said he’d take some time to think it over. He had been worried about what the impact upon their relationship would be were they to have a child together at that point, but he couldn’t deny her when he loved her so much, and when he felt partly to blame for her infertility. Now here she was, pregnant, without him.

Falling Apart

“I don’t know, Scully, I was thinking maybe sticking around here a bit...”

“Really?” She raised an eyebrow, her hands on her hips with that exasperated but adoring face she did. “And what exactly are you going to do around here?”

“Well, you know, help out, build a cot...”

“Mulder...”

“Take you to birthing classes...”

“You don’t have to do that,” she smiled. “you know my mom has offered to.”

“...Cook you dinner”

“You can’t cook!” she exclaimed.

He moved towards her with a swagger and a cheeky smile. “No, but I order a great takeout.”

Pre-Vienen Mulder and Scully combat PTSD through pleasant chats and late-night phone calls.

She moved back into the chair and he threw his head back against his pillow. He twisted his neck to the side, looking at her with a sly smile that made her head drop in bashfulness. 

When she lifted it back up again, her eyes were more serious, the redness in her cheeks gone. She fixed her posture and folded her hands in her lap like the proper agent she was. 

“Mulder. We have to talk.”

She had brought him home earlier that day and now they were eating take-out, the tension in the room at an all time high. He hadn’t said much the whole day, just paced through the house as she showered, put his things away, avoided his descending gaze. 

He didn’t even question her fidelity. As soon as he noticed her bump in the hospital room he softly smiled and said, “So, we’re going to have a baby.” and squeezed her hand when she nodded. He turned his gaze back to the TV above them and the subject was never brought up again. 

Scully bumped his knee playfully, “Mulder, I tried, I really did. Ironic, I couldn’t even keep a tiny fish alive, how am I supposed to care for a baby?”

That’s how he ended up sitting on the floor in a circle of eager couples, arms around Scully as she took deep inhalations. They gave him a handful of childbirth information pamphlets; the woman in bright purple silk pants leading the class referred to him as “Dad”.

Sprinkling flakes into the top of the tank, I found myself understanding my scaly companions in a whole new way. Scully would be by in an hour or so, stopping in on her lunch hour to tend me in much the same way I was tending them. After she saw to my needs she would scrutinize me for signs of disease, peering at me intently, attempting to assess my health and well-being. Give me a few extra flakes to show me she loved me. Tap good-bye on the glass and then walk away. Go back to her life with a teary, grateful smile.

Her life. Not our life.

Her baby. Not mine.

It’s Yours

“I just, uh, I’m having a little trouble processing… everything.” 

It’s yours.

They were at a stalemate. Mulder continued to stare at the floor, chewing on the inside of his cheek, while she waged an inner battle with herself—unable to stand the silence but incapable of speech. The baby was kicking wildly, sensing her struggle. She fought the urge to rub her belly like she usually did to calm him. Knowing he wouldn’t be the one to make the first move, she found the strength to approach. 

Three Words Mulder is listless upon return.

“I love you, too… and it’s okay,” she started, her voice strong and assuring. “I’ve had… time. Time to think and I understand why you went—why I was powerless to stop you. I don’t resent you for being Fox Mulder.”

“Time for bed, honey,” he whispered, coaxing her into a sitting position.

She smiled sleepily. “Mmm… honey. I missed that.”

He couldn’t hide his surprise. After everything that’s happened to them in the past year, she still wanted him to use the affectionate nickname he’d chosen.

She rested her hand on his, and their eyes met for a moment. The look on his face was one of pain, and confusion, but also joy and fascination. She stroked his hand with her thumb. She had thought of this moment dozens of times. It had gone nothing like this, but she was just glad it was happening at all. Mulder was really here. He was feeling the tiny kicks of her unborn child, and he was really, really here. Alive. She wanted to hold onto him, to cry and tell him everything she had wished she had told him before he had gone missing. But he was already dealing with so much and trying to adjust, and she was trying to be empathetic and not dump all the weight she had been carrying for months on him all at one time. But with everything that had transpired coupled with her pregnancy hormones, she was afraid her emotions were going to get the better of her. So she thought it best to leave, let him rest, and there would be time for everything else later.

He pulled his hand away and took her hand, turning it palm-side up. He placed her keys in it, and the elevator doors opened.

"I never thought I'd be paying for my own funeral," I say, going through the bills that were supposed to be covered by my life insurance. Since I'm not exactly dead, I now have to pay for them. I find one from a the cemetery for something else. Heavy equipment and labor fees. "Or my un-funeral."

"Aren't you still paying off that thing you rented in Antarctica?" Scully asks, leaning over my shoulder to look at what I'm doing. Something round and firm brushes against me and I jerk away. That doesn't escape her notice.

Three Words Mulder is prickly: a combination of PTSD and targetless resentment.

The bed dipped more than Mulder was expecting and he rolled towards her, trying not to smile.

Three Words Scully helps him dress, drives him home, and weathers four days before confronting Mulder.

The man standing in front of her apartment door looked drained. His body was limp, his eyes were red rimmed, and his face was pale with worry and sadness. He looked like a walking zombie.

"Hey," he said softly.

"Mulder, what are you doing here?"

"I need to talk to you." His voice was barely audible.

Every night since I was released from the hospital, we play the same game.

Her bed or mine. It doesn't matter. We both dress for sleep and she positions herself carefully on the left side of the bed. She lies on her right side, pillow between her pajama-clad legs, facing me. I get in, mumble "sweet dreams," and turn in the opposite direction. Back to Scully. Back to Scully's baby.

In my more rational moments, I tell myself the child is mine.

His attention was drawn to the hand rubbing her stomach and that familiar knot of jealousy formed in his throat, threatening to choke him. Someone else had granted her the miracle he wanted to give her and there was nothing he could do about it. He didn't even know if it was his place to be upset about it or if he was overstepping. The first time she'd done IVF, when she'd asked him, he felt included — like no matter what, he'd be a part of her and the baby's life. But clearly, she did it again and it made him feel like he hadn't actually needed to be a part of the process. That his involvement wasn't expected or, even worse, truly wanted.

But she continues: "I wish I could give you back the time you lost."

He regards her with surprise, and she meets his gaze with a small, sad smile.

"I remember what it's like," she says softly, "to come back."

🥏 Fic Rec #62: "Original Sin" by Syntax6

Today’s fic is another novel-length mystery by @syntax6 that showcases her well-honed craftsmanship with polish and confidence. The premise is intriguing: what if Scully really did leave and move to Utah at the end of Fight the Future? The fic picks up two years later with a casefile that unravels the mystery at the heart of the X-Files mytharc.

It never ceases to amaze me the way Syntax6 weaves the loose threads of canon into something even better—plausible, compelling, and still true to the series' classic vibe. Her original characters and her take on Diana are first-rate as always. An entertaining, powerful read!

It was just that, every time I reached for him, for an instant I was sure my arms were going to pass right through him and I'd find myself passed out on the cold cement floor of my cell again, clutching my chest and aching for all I'd lost. If the price I had to pay to keep this dream up and running was never really holding it, I was prepared to accept that.

But William wasn't. "Up!" he insisted, so I accommodated.

He was solid. Real. I'm his dad. His toes do belong in my abs.

I am officially the worst at recs because I have no memory but I'd like to open this up to anyone else who has better answers.

I don't even know if these count but the only two I could think of are Isometry by syntax6 and Cycles by Prufrock's Love.

Below the cut is a list compiled of X-Files fanfic that I've enjoyed in the past month or so. Some of these fics (or maybe all of these fics) are ones that are probably well known by this fandom, but they are new to me. The purpose of this list is both to share my recommendations and also to have something to refer back to when my mind gets to wondering about one of them. There's nothing more heartbreaking than losing a good fic you remember vividly. Special thanks to those beyond incredible websites like X-Libris and Gossamer, as well as tumblr users with impressive fic recs such @lilydalexf, @enigmaticxbee, and @randomfoggytiger.

The Angle of the Wrist by pqlaertes (1.7k) (explicit):

season four, cancer arc. A heartbreakingly good, soft smut story where a concerned Mulder watches intently over a sick Scully, and loves her in his own ways. 

LONGER STORIES:

Inspection by IngridGradient (22k+) (explicit):

set seasons one through seven. Beginning in season one, Mulder and Scully begin to inspect one another’s bodies for ticks after certain field cases. What begins as a rather innocuous exercise gradually forms into something much different than intended. I loved this because it felt very Mulder and Scully in the way it was full of yearning and all the flirting and the loving was done so silently as to be almost deadly to the two of them. Mulder is so sappy and in love in this, too, and I adore it so much. Also it's hot! 

*Equilibrium by astronaught (currently at 14k+) (teen):

currently season one through eight. A deep look into the ever-adapting relationship of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully throughout the series, as well as the agents themselves. Begins in season one and offers insightful and moving analysis for each of the seasons. This one is truly literary and absolutely breathtaking. The author is beyond talented, offering insightful and touching analysis of these two brilliant characters in a decidedly brilliant way. I’ve re-read many of these chapters, not only because they are so good, but because I feel there’s always more to find within them. This isn’t finished yet but it is definitely worth checking out.

Overnight Sensation by Syntax6 (50k+) (explicit):

set in season six, between Tithonus and Arcadia. A peeved post One Son/Two Father’s Scully debates her future with The X-Files and Mulder. She ends up taking a case in Boston to try out another life for a size, and Mulder - being Mulder - follows her out there. Chaos ensues when past grudges (and loves) are dredged up, and a killer continues to unleash hell on the city of Boston. This is another good profiler Mulder fic and also a lovely jealousy fic. Mulder was such an ass in season six and some of Scully’s decisions in this feel a little gratifying. I wouldn’t say it was so much explicit in the case of sexual situations, but definitely in terms of the content surrounding the murders. Another to be wary of if you can’t do dark, but very, very good. This author is excellent at case file fics. 

All the Way Home by Syntax6 (48k+) (explicit):

set early season seven, a bit after The Sixth Extinction: Amor Fati. Mulder is forced down memory lane when a serial killer he tried to help catch years ago seemingly comes back -- and he wants Mulder’s attention. This one I remember being distinctively creepy. It's definitely what I would consider a case file fic and I highly recommend it (but you ought to know it does get dark and if you feel uncomfortable with say, the contents of Silence of the Lambs, you should be wary of this. If you can get through that then you should be okay, though). I love the way this writer writes Mulder and Scully, and quickly found that I’m quite attached to fics where Mulder is a profiler. It’s a different and captivating side to him and I love, love, love the way the author weaves who Mulder is into how he responds to cases such as these. Mulder is such a nuanced individual and this author always writes he and Scully with such respect and accuracy. I would not be surprised to find out they have also written X-Files episodes in real life. 

Eclipse by Diana Battis and Alanna (20k+) (explicit): 

set in season seven. Scully asks Mulder to help her conceive children and they spend the next few months fighting that battle together, close as they ever have been. This story is so heartbreakingly tender and I fear my heart won’t ever recover from reading it (especially with that ending).  

Parabiosis by Penumbra (50k+) (explicit):

set in season seven. Mulder and Scully’s relationship as it evolves during the era of season seven, with a little bit of Mummy casefile to top it off. This one was a bit hard to wrap my mind around at first, but once I got the hang of the structure, it was smooth sailing from there. The way this author writes Mulder and Scully’s evolving relationship is beautiful--almost so intimate that you feel intrusive just for reading. I couldn’t put it down. Also, I must say this in relation to this fic: Chris Carter, eat your heart out.

Mulder wakes up frightened, afraid something has happened to Scully when he can’t find her in bed, and she comforts him. This is angsty but very good.

Porch Sex by icedteainthebag (1.8k+) (explicit):

I love, love, love a good flirty Mulder/Scully fic. This is definitely that. See also: the addressing of height difference during doggy sex. *chef’s kiss*’

LONGER STORIES:

Gravity by Malibu Sunset (26k+) (explicit):

Follows Mulder and Scully inside their life of exile, with Scully working as nurse and Mulder flying entirely under the radar; that is, until the events of the movie take place and he’s able to have a life outside of the unremarkable house again. I love this one for a lot of reasons -- the domesticity of Mulder and Scully, in which we get so little of in the original and revival series; the talk of William, of what they lost, and what they continue to lose; and the soft, comforting vignettes in between it all. I’m also particularly fond of the descriptive but accurate sex. It’s not always perfect (an aging Mulder has to wait until he can get another erection; they have drunk, imperfect sex while the lasagna cooks; Scully doesn’t cum each time; and Scully - yes even Scully - gets UTIs). 

THE X-FILES REBOOT era:

season eleven, plus one. Scully initiates sex with Mulder in the connected motel rooms. I have a special place in my heart for smut with an older Mulder and Scully. This is short and sweet and absolutely perfect.

You He Did Not Fail by extraordinarily_ordinary (85k) (explicit):

seasons one-five, deriving from the plot a little after Scully goes into remission. Scully has left Mulder and the X-Files behind without an explanation, taking a reassignment in L.A. Needing an expert profiler to help her with a difficult case, Scully asks Skinner for one from Washington D.C. Mulder ends up being the one she gets, and he comes with lots of questions about her departure, along with the heavy weight of their shared past together. Scully is made to make some difficult decisions while she and Mulder make headway in the case. This fic was so good I devoured it in a single day. This derives from the plot in a way that I found equal parts realistic and painful, and I love the Mulder we get in this. He feels like Duchovny’s own deeply sorrowful man, who just can’t seem to catch a break no matter how he tries. Oh, and he’s deeply and pitifully in love with Scully. Scully too feels so well fleshed out here. This is an incredible, and perhaps more realistic, take on a plot I’ve always regarded with some questions in The X-Files, and it gives Scully back some agency that she deserves.

🥏 TXF Fic Rec #42: "Universal Invariant" by Syntax6

It’s rare to find a novel-length, all-encompassing fic set in season 1. Today’s fic is exactly that: a celebrated classic exploring a ‘what if’ scenario where Scully’s deleted live-in boyfriend, Ethan, sticks around. The story begins with Scully’s assignment to the X Files in the ‘Pilot’ and concludes with her return from abduction in ‘One Breath’.

We get to experience the M/S dynamic right from the very beginning, watching their partnership evolve from suspicion to trust, with a repressed, burgeoning attraction. In Syntax6’s skillful hands, you know what that means: lots of delicious, in-character UST.

Ethan plays a major role, adding to the emotional tangle. The ‘Other’ character is often reduced to a flat plot-device or crudely villainized, but Syntax6’s characters are always likable and sympathetic. She writes the best ‘/Other’ plot in this fandom, enhancing the journey to MSR.

It’s a lot of fun to see how the story neatly interweaves with canon episodes, a hallmark of Syntax6’s writing. What’s more, She’s best known for her case files, and there’s a strong original casefile tossed in the mix, which I enjoyed immensely. And we get another of her signature moves: a very hot, well-written sex scene with explosive intensity, placed at the perfect spot in the story. She really does it all, and makes it look effortless.

Today's recommendation is in honor of our girl Special Agent Dana Katherine Scully's birthday! hbd queen.

Title: The Birthday Stories

Description: This recommendation is unique because there's actually 14 stories you can read - two each for seasons 1-7 (one for Mulder's birthday and one for Scully's). I am recommending two of Scully's bday stories. One is season 3 and one is season 6.

My thoughts: Neither have actual titles so I hope this isn't confusing :) The season 3 story is post-Pusher and is sooo angsty but in the best way. The season 6 fic is pre-Arcadia and is definitely lighter (still with a twinge of angst though). I frequently reread both stories; I enjoy them that much. Every time I wish there was more to read because syntax6 is such a great storyteller. Definitely check out the other stories too!
