If you were to write your own musical and star in it, what would it be about?
Normally I’d say there’s no way I’m sharing my personal intellectual property with you guys, but I actually happen to have a musical semi-written and thought out that’s already been registered to be copyrighted (shoutout to Papa Martynchik for funding that!). The title of a work can’t be protected, so I will not be sharing that, but for anyone who wants to read about my musical idea, keep reading under the cut, because let me tell you, it gets involved!
Our story starts in a foreign land. I call it Sylvandale, but that’s open to change. What’s important to know about Sylvandale and Sylvandalians is that they all love to sing. In fact, it’s one of their trademarks as a country - singing and beauty are the main two, the values that stand out above all else. Everyone makes videos and uploads them and the better you are at singing and the more people like your look, the more points you earn and the higher your currency value is. The royal family, for example, are the most beautiful and best singers of them all. Other families, however, aren’t so lucky. Take our main family, the Cleeses. We get an opening scene and song starting in their neighborhood, a low-income area - and ending in their home called “How Many Points Was That? (Not Enough)” where we meet our female lead, Aria. She’s the youngest of like ten daughters, all of whom are tanned with long dark hair and fetching smiles and hauntingly pretty brown eyes. Unlike her sisters, Aria has light hair and a smattering of freckles and is gangly and tall unlike her petite sisters - obviously she’s still pretty to us, the audience, but in the context of the world, she looks like a total outsider and people treat her as such.
Her family and most of the families in the neighborhoods work as maids and gardeners for the town next door, and you might wonder why the Cleese family, with so many young eligible maidens, don’t score higher, but it’s because most of them aren’t great singers. They all sound good enough, but when everyone else sounds like an angel? They don’t have enough points to move up, no matter how many videos they upload. They also now have to newly spend a lot of their points on their dad, who’s in critical care in the hospital after he tried to defend one of his daughters from a man who’s house they cleaned. They have no idea how they’re going to keep paying to keep him alive, and one of the sisters, the closest in age to Aria - let’s call her Fermata - has the idea for Aria to start making videos, as she never had due to being so ashamed of her appearance and often ridiculed for it, she never makes videos of her own. After some back and forth, she convinces Aria to at least sing in the videos while she, Fermata, oft recognized as the prettiest of all the Cleese’s, lip-syncs. Desperate times call for desperate measures so the awkward Aria agrees and the points surprisingly start rolling in.
Then, of course, we have to meet the royals. The prince, a young Prince Kazoul (played by me, in case that wasn’t obvious) is at the age where his family starts looking for who he marries. They have an acapella number about it called “Her Voice, His Choice” and they decide to hold a competition for his hand. They call to the Internet and announce that anyone who wishes to win the prince’s hand must upload a video and tag it appropriately, and that the top ten most viewed in 24 hours will be brought to his castle for a Bachelor-type competition. Prince Kazoul doesn’t feel too great about this, and we follow him to discover that he has a crush on a girl that lives in his castle with him, the main housekeeper’s daughter. Her name is Laura and she’s the most beautiful girl by the standards of this world, easily. She’s mute, though, and thus will never be famous - living in the castle for free is her best shot at the best life she can get, and she takes full advantage of it. She’s a fun, feisty spirit who has a loud personality despite never saying a word and she makes Prince Kazoul’s life in the castle more than bearable, she makes it fun. We don’t know if she loves him back or not, but we understand that he’s been in love with her since they were children and that the idea of this competition is crushing him. We observe a dance between the two in lieu of a duet, to the instrumentals of their favorite song “Someday”. It’s a classic in this universe, and it’s fun and cute and we understand it’s their last normal moment before the contestants swoop in.
Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Aria, Fermata uploads their latest song ( a haunting cover of “Someday” ) and tags it under the prince’s contest. She knows it’s a long shot but if one of them earns the chance to be queen, their dad would be taken care of and their family wouldn’t have to live in squalor. When Aria finds out, she cries and runs out of their house into the nearby woods to sing a solo. It’s a powerful ballad about wishing she had the face and the status to make decisions for herself (call it “Aria’s Aria”). She gets home and Fermata is highly apologetic but consoles her by saying it’s not like they’ll win - she just felt she had to try, for their family’s sake. Aria makes Fermata swear to never use her voice without her permission again and Fermata promises. The two seal the moment with a hug.
Obviously, Fermata and Aria’s video makes it into the top ten, but I don’t feel comfortable giving away more than the first act. Suffice it to say that they get into the competition (Fermata is the official contestant but she brings Aria as her “maid” in case she needs her voice) and we meet some of the other contestants, too. One of my favorite of the ten is this boy named Pobby - he’s tall and dark and handsome and sings opera and has a whole operatic number about how he’s going to crush everyone else in the competition, no matter what. He’s a little bit of a villain but mainly he’s just in it to win it, competitive af - he comes from a way nicer area than Fermata and Aria and he acts like it, but mainly he’s mean to Fermata because he feels threatened by the fact that she’s prettier than him. Aria and Kazoul get to know each other but she pretends to be mute because she doesn’t want her and her sister’s ruse to be revealed, and he finds himself drawn to her more than he is to any of the contestants. A sort of love triangle forms between Aria and Kazoul and Laura, but will either of them win his heart? Will he win anyone’s heart at all? Who will win the competition? And what does it mean for their perfect society that people get sidelined for circumstances outside of their control? You’ll have to wait till it’s made to find out for sure! Or, if you read all of this, you should message me “Who wins?” and I’ll tell you in private how it ends! Thank you!

Coastal Steelhead Report
Kenny Priest at Fishing the North Coast Reports on 2.15.2018
While the lack of rain has most steelhead anglers singing the blues, there are however, a few bright spots. Especially if you like to throw on a pair of waders and head to the river bar. The Mad River is probably as good now as it’s been all season. With plenty of bank access, it’s probably the best steelhead option at the moment. The river is on the low side, but the snowmelt has kept the color a beautiful shade of green. Chrome-bright hatchery steelhead are being caught by anglers working the river from the hatchery to the bridge. Both the South Fork Eel and the Van Duzen are getting too low for boats, but both have excellent bank fishing opportunities. Neither is chalked full of fish, but if you put your time in, a steelhead or two is not out of the question. You’ll want to cover some water, so comfortable wading shoes are a must. If you’d rather fish from a drift boat, you’re options are somewhat limited. The main Eel is your best bet as it still has plenty of green water. There’s also a real good chance of catching a few bright steelies. The Klamath and Trinity rivers are both good options as well. Both are green, and should have their share of winter steelhead moving through. With no substantial rain since the end of January, and very little predicted for the coming weeks, the coastal rivers are all headed towards low and clear conditions. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t ample opportunities to hook into a big ole’ winter steelhead.
The weather ahead “We’re heading into a more active pattern, but it doesn’t look like we’re going to see a lot of rain over the next two weeks,’ said Ryan Aylward of Eureka’s National Weather Service. “We’re going to see some low elevation snow, but not much in the way of moisture. The systems will be coming down from the north, which if they stay inland we’ll see mostly snow. If they come down near the coast, they can pick up moisture and we could see some rain. The next system should arrive on Sunday, with snow levels around 1,800 feet. A quarter-inch of rain is expected, but it will likely fall as snow. Another half-inch is forecasted for Monday, but with snow levels dropping to 700 feet, we won’t see much rain. Unfortunately, the next couple weeks are looking like we’ll see below normal precipitation.”
The Rivers:
Chetco/Elk/Sixes “The Chetco is now at its lowest level of the season, and steelhead fishing is hit and miss,” said Andy Martin of Wild Rivers Fishing. “During the cloudy and rainy weather on Sunday most boats had at least a couple of fish. With clear weather on Monday and Tuesday it was slow again. There are fish but they are easily spooked right now. This weekend’s rain isn’t expected to increase flows much, but could get the fish in the river to bite better. Boat pressure has been light as most of the out of town guides have moved to other rivers. The Elk and Sixes are low, clear and slow right now and very few anglers are trying.”
Chico resident Evan Oetinger landed this nice winter steelhead on a recent trip to the Smith River. With very little rain in the forecast, coastal rivers are running low and clear, making conditions tough for steelhead anglers. Photo courtesy of Evan Oetinger
Smith River The Smith remains low and clear and in need of a good shot of rain. Flows were 7-feet on the Jed Smith gauge on Wednesday and dropping. Boat pressure has been light as most guides have moved to other rivers. There are reportedly a few fish around, but overall, fishing is tough.
Eel River (main stem) The main stem is in great shape and holding a nice shade of green. Boat pressure was fairly heavy over the weekend, but has since slowed. Boats are averaging one to four fish per trip. There’s some nice adults in the mix and some bluebacks have shown up. There’s also a good number of half-pounders around. Flows are predicted right around 1,800 cfs by Saturday.
Eel River (South Fork) According to Darren Brown of Brown’s Sporting Goods in Garberville, the river is low, but there’s still a few boats drifting. He said, “There were a couple boats at Sylvandale on Tuesday, but it’s definitely gotten quiet. Most boats have moved way down on the South Fork or to the main stem,” Brown added. Flows are predicted to be around 375 cfs on Saturday.
Van Duzen The Van Duzen is getting skinny, with flows hovering around 275 cfs on Wednesday. A few fish were caught by boats earlier in the week, but it’s getting too low to drift. The water is clearing, but bank anglers are still finding a few fish.
Mad River The Mad is in great shape and holding color reports Justin Kelly of Eureka’s RMI Outdoors. “The fishing definitely got better this week, seems like there’s more fish around now. All the deep holes are holding fish. The fish are scattered throughout the river, but from the hatchery to the bridge has been good. There’s a pretty good mix of both wild and hatchery fish around, and lots of bright ones in the mix too.’ added Kelly.

Richard Schmid, Alla Prima

Day 47/365: 02/16/11
:) Today was nice. No badminton practice today though, I feel so sad and empty without it! I came back to school today, and everyone was like “omg, where’d you go!” Haha, fun. I really didn’t do much today, except go to Sylvandale to watch the volleyball team practice, Lisa is so weird. I miss Cathy.
P.S I really like the sky.
