Whoops this turned into a ramble 😅

It's. It's literally just rottmnt and YouTube tutorials. Rise is what got me into drawing! I fell in love with the show and wanted to contribute so badly to it that I started drawing. I drew them over and over and over and over and so on, and it's really influenced my entire... Basicaly everything about my art. I've especially found that it has contributed a whole lot to the way I draw eyes and use sharp, angular lines. Rottmnt introduced me to other artists whose work inspire me and who I occasionally reference, and provide inspiration (ex. Drawing people's characters and aus)

And then YouTube tutorials because yes :) I watched this one really incredible video that just. Opened the world of backgrounds to me (I haven't really applied it but there's this one piece I never finished that literally only happened because of that video) I also learned how to draw the turtles better from endless tutorials

Oh wait I actually just thought of more!!

There's this one person on YouTube, LavenderTowne, and every time I watch one of their videos, I get the irrepressible urge to draw something. They also influenced how I draw lines, and I've learned a lot about color from them.

@theartofeverything is just. Dvytfyujwhkyjgfdsrhwgtjdgtfw. His works are always so so incredible, and seeing all the different styles xe does is always so so cool to me. He's also encouraged me and given the best feedback on my art :]

@lunarloaches22 taught me shading traditionally, because their works are always so SO FREAKING BEAUTIFULLY shaded and although I failed miserably at trying to emulate it, it did vastly improve the way I do traditional art.

SWSA by @psychologicalwarclaire just. Rewired my entire brain. It was the first fic I've ever made art for, and motivated me to keep going and trying to get better. It has given me SO SO MANY IDEAS. I still think about it every day, and oftentimes when I'm listening to music I'll get steamrolled by an animatic (or drawing) idea for it, and it's basically been the whole reason that I wanted to get into animation in the first place, which in turn has influenced my normal drawing as well because art has that cool thing where everything BUILDS on each other. I never would have learned some of the things that I have without it. It still amazes me to this day, and still influences my art (I need to make more art for it). Also just curly's writing in general, and the fact that she's the one who introduced me to rottmnt in the first place :) (wow.... I just realized I probably wouldn't have started drawing without curly.... Dygjfgfesssfgenfhy thank you :]) oh yeah she also lent me a book one time (wait a second THAT WAS BASICALLY A WHOLE YEAR AGO WHAT THE-) that finally unlocked drawing humans for me :)

Shows like Toh, svtfoe, amphibia, and ninjago have helped me figure out things (especially HAIR and shading) I remember filling a whole book with characters because I tried to draw every character from toh (some of the drawings are. Okay. Eh.)

Also doing some dtiys's just made something in my brain click and helped me figure stuff out (especially @/cupcakslushie's)

@/lara-cairncross's fairy au taught me how I liked to draw lines, colors, and got me comfortable with how much my style changes against my will lol

Also, I remember one day looking out the car window and realizing how I could actually DRAW things from real life. I don't know how to explain it, but something just clicked, and I realized that if I imagined everything being turned into a pencil sketch, I could draw THAT, and in turn realized that I could draw things in the way I knew how. A lot of my art was largely based on referencing screenshots and copying them, but I couldn't figure out how to use realistic objects, because I couldn't figure out how people just DID that (I hadn't figured out shading yet). Then I figured out that I could put the lines in the same places that the edges of objects were and in turn could use that as a reference! :D yeah 👍

Also @rocky-again and @drsmer are some of my FAVORITE ARTISTS EVER. Looking at their art helped me learn how to use color and character design. They were also some of the first people who I showed my art to and encouraged me. I vividly remember shakily sending my first rise comic ever to a group chat with them in and them, these impossibly good, slightly intimidating, older artists that I admired, liking it. They also helped me keep going and wanting to improve. I hope someday to be able to even compare to them :]

Also music has largely been a whole big chunk of where all my ideas come from, both based on lyrics, and/or just vibes alone :)

Also when I tried painting for the first time (not including those rather dreadful paintings I did as a five year old. *hides hideous paper filled with pink and yellow blobs that are sorry excuses for flowers*) anyway it really opened my brain and made me realize how to mix color and how to actually shade and use layers. Like I said everything builds on itself! It's especially helped with digital :)

Oh wait also @emptybeb helped me develop my sona in the tmnt comp, and called me out on my large proportions! Oh gosh I'm still trying to get out of the habit of drawing gigantic heads, but it DEFINITELY made me work to get a lot better (also I'm so sorry for never answering that ask, I think I might've accidentally deleted it😭) I had no idea about how big I drew heads, so that definitely helped a lot :]

OH GOSH THAT GOT LONG LOL. Anyway, yeah! That's a lot of what has built up the foundation of my art and style :)

because i know a 4th grader taught me anatomy, my art teacher taught perspective, and i learned expressions from my best friend. i studied ranboos vtuber model and cryptids from books and medieval portraits. and now i have whatever the fuck my art style is.

HAPPY EASTER!! Hope your day has been great!

Haha I guess ive been pretty busy. Had to take care of a lot of things before i head off on a road trip tomorrow! I suppose i can share what i was cooking yesterday. Two screenshots from the thumbs im cleaning up. Ill do a proper wip update soon, but i havent gotten to cleaning up my thumbs from the animated part id like to show. So out of context donnie and leo for now!

Im like…really secretive when it comes to my projects. And this project in particular ive been keeping under careful wraps. Not even my bestie, who i spam on the regular with wip updates, has seen anything from this project (altho im pretty sure i told him what its about…maybe he also saw one thumbnail. But thats it) I have very few spoiler free shots on this one and im guarding my song choice with every fiber of my being. So ya youre the first to see anything at all past my thumbnail stage even if it is just an itty bitty small bite.

I might continue to be a little quiet this week between being on the road and sightseeing with friends, but my goal is to finish my storyboards by the end of the week cuz guess who isnt doing the actual driving!! Who knows, maybe ill share an actual wip thats animated sometime this week

HEHEHE I'm glad you like it! I really put my heart and soul into this. So many choices I made to try to capture the words you put on paper. I can write a whole essay on how I used color on this comic. Which is funny bc again. This was supposed to be a quick thing. I WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO GO FULL COLOR. But typical pixel brain is taking a project and elevating it and before I knew it COLOR is very much a storytelling element in this as much as what you see the characters doing. Every color choice was made with intent.

For the ninpo, I had to rewatch parts of the rise movie for this since I didn't realize mikey's is...lava lamp esque??? Which honestly makes so much sense since he's circle. I really thought he was also fire. Raph and leo's ninpo already looks pretty similar, but raph's is more electric inspired.

YES CASEY CAMEO. Casey squared moment. I'm imagining them playing good cop bad cop. One minor thing on my list of things to do is design a post season2 casey outfit. She has one screenshot in the movie that has her old foot clan outfit and I think that was just so we could easily tell its her. Hamato clan outfit casey? But sleeveless bc she's just like that.

Draxum 100% texts like an old person who doesn't understand text speak. Of course he's gonna add a period not knowing the tonal implication of his message. I also think he's just direct and to the point. I wanted to add in splinter's message, but I couldn't come up with something and realized mikey and raph would prob break the news that they're missing instead of asking where they are since splinter's kind of a homebody.

Shoutout to @cottoncandywoof who I sent these panels to before uploading. Everyone needs a second pair of eyes. One of his comments was "make him angrier" and he definitely helped with some speech bubble stuff and the last panel on page 7. Which I was struggling with.

I'm not a comic artist, my background is animation so this was a good challenge. "animator tries translating written words into comic panels". I had to break my mindset on some things that make sense in animation, but not so much in comic pages. But I also always knew that this particular moment from swsa NEEDED to be told in comic format which is why I chose that instead of say, an animatic. I also really wanted to test out comic making and this was the excuse. Comics are a completely different medium from animation despite the similarities from an initial glance.

The last panel is my favorite ngl. That whole last page. Which technically I took creative liberties on. Raph is there when mikey comes to that conclusion after they have the family meeting in chapter 6, but I didn't want to break the flow of the comic AND I didn't want it to be too long. I wanted it to be focused on mikey and his thoughts and feelings towards this. I really thought I could do that in 4 pages sdlkfjsdlk.

Wow long message. I'm just extremely passionate about the creation of this since I put so much forethought and care into it. I tried my best to translate the feel of what you wrote into a visual format. It was a great challenge :]

This put such a smile on my face. HEHEHEHE. SWSA changed my brain chemistry so I got to return the favor. Im so happy you love it!! Believe it or not, the closer I was to finishing, the more random bouts of doubt I was getting. But AAAAAA THIS WAS SO FUN TO WORK ON. I FINALLY GOT TO ANIMATE MY FAVORITE FIC OF ALL TIME.

You do not know how long its been since this entered my brain. And I HAD TO WAIT. This kept being pushed out of its priority spot. AND I COULDNT TELL YOU ABOUT IT BC I KNEW ITD BE AWHILE. Ngl half of it was "inked" over the past two weeks, which was the only reason why I hinted this project to you. To motivate me and bc I knew I was ready to commit to finishing. But i had my thumbnails sitting on my ipad ever since august.

Hehe so about i promise to catch you....the animatic came first. This animatic was supposed to be swsa 1 year anniversary. Then it was supposed to be your birthday present. THEN it was supposed to be your christmas gift (I guess it is still technically your christmas gift?). So yes, i did just color a frame from this. In hindsight, im very glad i took my time. I would much rather take a little longer to make something Im proud of then rushing just to get out more art. And im very very proud of this. Its been quite a journey from start to finish.

I strive to animate as well as you write. Which means pushing myself to the max with the symbolism and imagery. How can i represent the text without just drawing the actions? My challenge was to make something that wouldnt spoil the fic but still showed the key moments in ways only a reader would understand. I took "make swsa an animated opening" very seriously and some scenes were actually changed from my original thumbs bc id realize they were too spoilery for someone still reading or who hasnt read it. Besides, I could always give those moments proper attention in other animatics. ;]

I did two bc I didnt want text covering any of my anination. Plus it goes by fast and i wanted the focus on the visuals first and foremost. But it really does hit different when you know the translation to the song. "Tick tock tick tock watch me stop the clock" "you cannot escape my eye" "youre like a doll made just for me". I love dreamcatcher, but the meaning would be lost to anyone who doesnt know korean. So yay two versions!

ALSO HOW DID YOU FIND SOMETHING I DIDNT EVEN INTEND??? THEIR HANDS AS CLOCK HANDS???? I think it was in the back of my mind but i def didnt fully realize this. I almost put the clock in the background of that shot, but then decided to have donnie fall into the clock instead. Visually it works better, but unfortunately it sacrifices the readability of an already incredibly obscure fun easter egg that runs through this entire animatic.

AAAA THANK YOU I TRIED SO HARD WITH MORDICA. I had to really step out of my comfort zone with her bc im not used to drawing dragons like that. I tried my best to be as faithful to your description as possible.

Oh man. I could write essays over this animatic. ESSAYS OVER THE CREATION OF THIS. PLEASE. FEEL FREE TO DISCUSS. Man is this how you feel every time you post a chapter update? Role reversal moment.

But ya, I love your fic so much curly. And i love that my first proper rottmnt animatic is based on something that you wrote. You inspire me so much and I wanna create things that make you feel the same way i do everytime I read your writing. You deserve all the fanart and fan animatics and Im glad i finally was able to deliver!
