Getting Married to Konig
Imagine a wedding in the Alps, amongst the trees and squirrels, birds chirping happily. A soft dapple cast down from the trees and gentle sun.
Konig would be happy for you to take charge in decorating the venue (it's most likely just outside of your shared cabin), flowers are everywhere, looped around the arch and made into delicate garlands.
You dress beautifully in a white gown that would have cost more than you had made in a year. You know it's been hard for Konig to look away while you had dress shopped in Vienna even with an array of bodyguards.
However, when you walk down the aisle, admired by all the guests, mostly trusted KORTAC buddies, he can't help but feel that the wait was completely worth it.
The officiant can't say: you may kiss your bride soon enough. And if he kisses you a couple seconds longer than is socially acceptable, who cares? If they complain or insult his new pretty, little wife he has a quick and efficient solution that comes in the form of a pistol to the face.
You have your chance of honeymoon destination.
Maus, the world is yours. No door will ever close for you.
Skiing in Switzerland, exploring the Grand Canyon or any of the world wonders is open to you. However, he'd be just as happy wrapped up with you in bed for a couple weeks at home - not that he wouldn't have been if you'd have traveled though... 🤭

hiiii ? miss me?
Modern Nikolai parte tres
For some reason you aren’t very surprised when His Royal Highness, Prince Oliver Lantsov, arrives on your door randomly one morning, stopping you on the way out of your apartment with a broad grin and wide splayed arms.
“My Everlasting Delight!” He greets you, formulating a dramatic expression as he peers at you over the frames of his sunglasses. “I missed you, darling.”
“Thought you were in Milan.” You say, staring him down with an empty grocery bag in hand. He shifts on his feet for a moment.
“I uh, was. But then Vivianne…” Olly makes a vague gesture and grimaces. “You know how models are.”
“I don’t, actually.”
“Well anyways,” the prince smiles and wraps an arm around your shoulders, jovially tugging you down the walkway and towards the street. Cars drive by, busy in the heart of a bustling city. “I just wanted to let you know that my birthday party is coming up. We’re going to Switzerland obviously, and you must come.”
Your stomach twists and you cringe at your friend, the leather of his jacket cool against your arms as you walk. You shrug away from him, the scent of expensive cologne chasing your senses and blending with the crispy breeze of the outdoors.
“I’m not going this year.” You say, giving him a ‘duh’ look.
“Why?” His head actually cocks to the side.
“You know why.”
“‘You-Know-Who’?”
“He isn’t Voldemort.” You sigh, rolling your eyes even as your heart begins to weigh heavily against your ribcage, the too full organ seeming to be longing for a way out. “Yeah. Nik.” You sigh again, louder. “It’d be weird and he’d be there and I’d just—I don’t know, have to hang out on the sidelines at a lot of points and I just don’t think—”
“You’re my friend too, you know. If I want you there than he can be mature for once and behave himself, yeah? He’d do that.”
“This isn’t about him behaving, it’s—” you pause, running a hand through your hair in frustration. What do you mean? Sure, some part of you—more than you wanted to admit—longed to see him. To see the way his eyes lit up when he laughed, see the hidden grin he’d give you when he thought someone in a room was being ridiculous, the way he’d find an excuse to touch you no matter who was around, the way—
“Y/N?”
You look at Olly. The prince’s eyebrows are furrowed, an unspoken question on his lips. You force a faint smile and loop an arm through his, resting your head on the boy’s shoulder for a beat.
“I’ll think about it, okay?” You lie, squeezing his arm for emphasis. He nods but a gleam of suspicion lights up those familiar brown eyes. “Seriously. Now what are you doing here?”
Olly watches for another beat before shrugging, relenting to your change of subject.
“Shopping.” He muses, then smiles deviously. “Join me. I have my mother’s card.”
—
The days leading up to the annual ski-trip were filling you with anxiety.
On one hand, somehow Olly had forced you—against all odds—to attend the weekend outing. An overnight flight to Switzerland later and you’re standing in a large hotel room, the view of snow-clad mountains and trees meeting your stare.
When a knock hits your door you turn, opening it hesitantly. The entire hotel smells like expensive vanilla and hints of smoke from the fireplaces, undercut with natural cleaners from the ridiculously efficient housekeepers. The figure standing outside the door gives you a hesitant smile, his freshly cut blond hair short and shiny in the light.
“Hey, Y/N.” He greets, voice laced with nerves, and your heart stops.
Nikolai.

HWS Switzerland headcanons
Multilingual by default. Also speaks the language of his business partners fluently.
Speaks extra thick Schwyzerdütsch with Gilbert, Ludwig, and Roderich just because he can. Gradually elevates difficulty levels to Berndütsch if they seem to slowly understand the previous levels of Schwytzerdütsch
A lot of Norse countries get credit for surviving harsh winters but he's equally tough. Surviving in a mountainy region with drastic winters is tough work.
Survivalist to the max. MacGuyver's himself through any rural environment.
Good with animals, especially more "difficult to handle" farm animals, like goats, cows, and donkeys. Trains his shepheard dogs perfectly. Doesn't like horses though. Not sturdy enough and too much maintenance. Adores his wildlife, especially vultures.
Usually he doesn't like talking more personally to people but will hold an entire lecture on vultures and their significance in the ecosystem when prompted.
Also trains avalanche-rescue dogs.
Crafty in many departments: Can make his own food (from wheat to bread, milking to tasty aged cheese, etc.), expert forager, knits comfiest socks, hats, and sweaters, excellent first aid skills, expert woodworker, understands the physics of technology in extreme weather conditions, knows how to handle animals (wild or domestic), can fix almost any machinery. For some reason believes that qualifies him to cut his own bangs.
A bit intense when organizing. He's always organized about every event: Winter, business, travel trips, party planning. But he gets irritated if others are lax in this department when they're trying to organize the same thing.
Likes the finer things in life. Everything he surrounds himself with is of good quality whereas not boisterous. It's all very tasteful.
Likes to eat well.
Still drives over the border to shop at the grocery stores of his neighbor countries because the prices are much lower. Still complains about the cheese quality though.
Can be surprisingly charming at first meetings. Treats people with reserved politeness, makes small, light hearted jokes. But he's extremely difficult to get close to on a personal level.
Even spontaneous meeting just to chat are already too familiar to him.
Not uninterested in others but enjoys being mostly by himself.
Actually can be very funny. It's mostly dry humor yet he has an unmatched timing. When he doesn't laugh at anyone else's jokes it's not for not getting them but because he purposefully wants to signal that he doesn't want to dignify that comment with a laugh.
Deadpan comments are politely formulated yet ice-cold.
Quiet interested in culture. Loves to go to art exhibits, museums, or watch movies. Even enjoys experimental stuff. Yet, if he doesn't like something he will tear it verbally to shreds for having wasted his time.
Uses many food metaphors without him noticing.
In modern days he has fun creating hip-hop-tracks. Nobody but him likes that.
Although he enjoys the refinery of urban environments, when he gets overwhelmed he retreats into the mountains to do craftswork, tend animals, and generally avoid human contact.
Terrific at any sport related to winter and mountains. Has to ski well by necessity although his first attempts at snowboarding were hilariously clumsy. Equally passionate about hockey and figure skating.
Hiking and mountain climbing are his summer time passions. Very convinced by his climbing skills, so he died on several occassions doing freestyle climbing. Stubbornly doesn't accept his failure though.
Many of his early deaths include death by avalanche, guessing what herb is edible or not, freezing to death, and getting in a wresting match with a billy goat once.
Interested in science as so far as it serves to better human living conditions in natural environments, or how to do things more practically. Loves riding the train to watch the panorama although not keen on Ludwig nerding out about trains.
If he had to choose, his favourite neighbour might be Francois (don't tell him that though).
Of course he's a pretentious schmuck about his chocolatier skills. Belgium and him have a silent rivalry about who's chocolate gets more praise.
Never leaves the house without a Swiss army knife.
#HWS Switzerland#Hetalia headcanons#long post#text#Haven't decided on my fan-name for him. Anyhting but Bash...

Hello !!! I LOVE your reclists and was wondering if you have something with harry/cedric (or someone else) but drarry being endgame?
🫠
Hi there! I don’t think I’ve read any Harry/Cedric recently but here are some fics where Harry has past relationships with other people:
When It Returns by academicdisaster (M, 7.5k)
Harry's husband is dead, and Malfoy is the only one who gets it. Or, the one where they drink at a straight man pub, renovate a house, and learn how to find joy again.
A Little Perseverance by Writcraft (E, 19k)
Harry’s wand is dying and Draco’s flirtation with a magical matchmaking service is causing him no end of trouble. When Harry turns up at Draco’s shop looking for help, everything gets a lot more complicated.
Forever Was a Lie by bluefay (E, 22k)
After breaking up with Charlie, Harry heads to Rome for Christmas to search for answers to a previous heartbreak. What he doesn’t expect is for Draco, the man who broke his heart five years ago, to be running the bed and breakfast he’s staying at.
Historians by oknowkiss (E, 30k)
It’s the Dumbledore’s Army Reunion Holiday, and Harry’s found himself in hot water with his friends once again, after telling them he has a boyfriend he definitely does not have. In an attempt to fix things, he’s made it his colleague on Level Nine, Draco Malfoy’s problem too. Featuring a ski chalet in Switzerland, a pair of bunk beds, and an agreement that should’ve been simple, were it not for all the bloody feelings getting in the way.
The Ghosts of Hogwarts Past by Writcraft (E, 30k)
Draco has hardly had time to bask in his promotion to Head of Slytherin House when he gets news of Harry Potter’s return to Hogwarts. With his increased workload, the reappearance of the ex he never got over, the ghost that won’t let him sleep, and some curious coded diaries, it’s shaping up to be a hell of a year.
This is Never Happening Again by hpleems (M, 32k)
Harry and Malfoy don't get along any better than they used to, but Harry can't get enough of their secret hookups, and he can't seem to figure out anything else in his life, either. He's looking forward to Christmas break so he can clear his head...but fate has other plans.
The Miseducation of Draco Malfoy by magpie_fngrl (E, 37.5k)
Zacharias Smith writes a tell-all about the D.A. Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy are not happy about it.
Going Once, Going Twice by VivacissimoVoce (M, 39k) - past Harry/Cedric
Draco Malfoy has been missing for two years. Now the Malfoy estate is going up for auction, and Harry decides it’s time to find out what happened to his former school rival.
dirtynumbangelboy by magpie_fngrl (E, 39k)
After Harry’s unfortunate encounter with his ex, Draco Malfoy makes him a proposition. Draco wants his parents to stop matchmaking him and Harry wants to make his ex jealous. All they need to do is simply pretend they’re in love. Problem is… Draco already is.
Shine On, You Crazy Diamond by lagerlout (E, 42k)
Harry has probably always wanted Draco, it just took him a few years to figure that out. A story about the joy of discovering exactly who you are and how easy it can be once you do.
Nights With You by The_Sinking_Ship (E, 58k)
Draco is mortified when moments prior to departing for the most anticipated destination wedding of the year, he is cruelly dumped. But when he learns that Harry Potter has, at long last, split with his horrible boyfriend, Draco is certain his luck has changed. Never a man to squander an opportunity for revenge (and what would probably be a spectacular shag), Draco vows to make Potter his for the weekend. Now all Draco has to do is convince him.
Home Truths by skeptique (E, 67k)
In the off-season Harry decided to fix up Grimmauld Place and found that Draco Malfoy was the only person who could help him. A demanding career and unrelenting press scrutiny were enough to deal with before Harry added a house with a mind of its own, family history, and a tense, flirty, complicated relationship with his childhood nemesis to the mix.
Such Great Heights by aideomai (E, 93k)
Draco Malfoy, wide-eyed and pale and in a decidedly ragged shirt, was crouched next to the pile of whatever the dragon had been eating. Harry threw himself to a halt and yelled, “Merlin, how many times do I have to save your life?”
Make This Leap by oflights (M, 118k)
Harry owns a struggling restaurant which is running out of money, and his Head Chef has just handed in notice. He's at a bit of a loss as to what to do until Narcissa Malfoy presents an obvious solution: bring in Draco Malfoy as Chef and part owner. Harry does.
By the Grace by lettered (T, 140k)
Harry is an Auror instructor. Malfoy wants to be an Auror.
Lost In Your Arms by Femme (E, 257k)
Three months after their brief encounter, Draco has almost forgotten about Potter--or so he tells himself. Then a Dark wizard shows up on the Auror radar and all hell breaks loose. Draco will have to choose between everything he holds dear--everything he's worked so hard for--and a few stolen moments of passion with a certain green-eyed Inspector, once his sworn enemy and now something rather different entirely. He'll make the right choice, won't he?

TOUR DE LUCY!
Lucy & Cycling
Pedal Power! When not motorized or on foot power, Lucy biked! Here’s a look at bikes, trikes, and other likes.
Ben Mankiewicz’s podcast relates that Lucille Ball, as a young Hollywood hopeful, biked to work.
Broadway Thru a Keyhole (1933) ~ A bevy of costumed chorines - including an uncredited Lucille Ball, Susan Fleming and Ann Sothern - wheel around a giant nightclub stage to the tune of “When You Were a Girl on a Scooter (And I Was the Boy on the Bike)”. This was Lucille Ball’s second film. It also featured Charles Lane and Walter Winchell.
Palm Springs Weekend (1942) ~ An RKO short in which newlyweds Lucy and Desi rent a tandem bike to tour Palm Canyon, stopping to take snapshots.
“The Lost Pilot” (1951) ~ Pepito the Clown (Pepito Perez) was a good friend of Desi Arnaz. In the long-unaired pilot episode for “I Love Lucy” Pepito rides the world’s smallest bicycle, a routine that was part of his stage act.
“The Audition” (1951) ~ When the unaired pilot’s script was recycled into the regular series, Pepito was replaced by Buffo the Clown (Pat Moran) who injures himself trying to do a handstand on the handlebars of a (full-sized) bicycle. Resting at the Ricardo’s apartment, he tries the stunt again and careens through the kitchen door. His replacement is Lucy as ‘The Professor’, although she doesn’t ride the bike!
“Lucy’s Show-Biz Swan Song” (1952) ~ When the episode was running short, Desi Arnaz invited Pepito to do some of his act from the unaired pilot, including the world’s smallest bicycle routine.
The tiny bike (one of two) is six inches wide by ten inches high, manufactured by Anderson, Melbourne, Australia, in 1928. It was at one time entered into Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Pepito was in Australia in 1928 for an extended vaudeville tour, and he must have ordered this bicycle at that time. It is now one of the artifacts in the Lucy-Desi Museum’s collection. A special case was been constructed to exhibit it.
“Lucy Fakes Illness” (1953) ~ To convince Ricky she is going through her second childhood, Lucy rides a tricycle through the living room!
“The Ricardo’s Change Apartments” (1953) ~ Lucy fills the apartment to the brim with toys and baby items to convince Ricky they need a bigger apartment. Among the explosion of tot props is a tricycle and a bicycle!
“Bon Voyage” (1956) ~ A bicycle is Lucy’s undoing when boarding the S.S. Constitution for Europe. Saying one last farewell to Little Ricky on the dock, her skirt gets caught in the chain of a messenger bike, delaying her timely boarding. She even tries to board with the bicycle!
“Lucy’s Bicycle Trip” (1956) ~ When leaving Italy for France, Lucy has her heart set on biking across the border, but meets some resistance from Ricky and the Mertzes.
LUCY: “You wouldn’t climb to the top of the Eiffel Tower. You wouldn’t ride the ski lift in Switzerland. You won’t swim in the Mediterranean and now you don’t want to bicycle along the Italian Riviera.”
The bicycles used in the episode were provided by Arnold Schwinn and Company in return for a screen credit.
“The I Love Lucy Christmas Show” (1956) ~ Little Ricky gets a new bike for Christmas!
“Lucy is a Kangaroo for a Day” (1962) ~ To buy her son a new bicycle for his birthday, Lucy takes a job at a law office - until things ‘unravel’. Her knit dress becomes entangled in the spokes of the bicycle and unravels, causing her to have to wear a kangaroo costume to complete the job.
A carefree Jerry (Jimmy Garrett) rides his new bicycle through the living room!
A receipt from a Hollywood bicycle shop for the purchase of a bicycle basket and bike rack. Dated December 22, 1962, it was signed by Lucy. It is not known if the items turned up on screen or in what show / episode.
“Together for Christmas” (1962) ~ Combining their family holiday traditions, Lucy holds her favorite ornament, a Santa on a three-wheeled bike. Viv’s expression betrays her feelings about the ornament.
“Bob Hope’s Leading Ladies” (1966) ~ In the special, Lucy makes her grand entrance riding a large tricycle with her chauffeur (Jerry Colonna) on the back.
“Lucy in London” (1966) ~ Lucy and singer / songwriter Anthony Newley tour London town on a tandem bicycle.
Yours, Mine and Ours (1968) ~ In the film, Helen (Lucille Ball) and Frank (Henry Fonda) are the parents of 19 kids! On Christmas morning, more than a couple of them get bicycles.
“Lucy Helps Craig Get a Drivers License” (1969) ~ Lucy tags along on Craig’s road test. Needless to say the back seat driver frustrates and angers the instructor (Jack Gilford). When he learns that her license has expired, he says that after he's through with her she'll be lucky to drive a tricycle in Griffith Park!
“Lucy and Wally Cox” (1970) ~ Wally and Lucy are security guards at a toy warehouse that is robbed at gunpoint. There is a tricycle on the shelf behind the robbers (Gil Perkins and X Brands).
“Lucy and Lawrence Welk” (1970) ~ Lucy sends her visiting friend Viv on the Universal Studios tour, where she is excited to have seen Doris Day’s bicycle! All this is reported by Viv and neither Day nor her bicycle appear on screen. In real life, Doris Day was an avid bike rider. She rode to the studio on many occasions and pedaled around Beverly Hills until the police finally told her they couldn’t guarantee her safety.
Mame (1974) ~ Auntie Mame (Lucy) and her nephew Patrick (Kirby Furlong) bike through central park in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical.
EXERCISE BIKES
“The Charm School” (1954) ~ At Phoebe Emerson’s salon, Lucy and Ethel work out on stationary bikes. If you don’t remember this moment, it is because it was cut before broadcast. The press photos, however, survive.
“Lucy and the Countess Lose Weight” (1965) ~ At a health farm managed by Mr. Mooney, Lucy and Rosie (Ann Sothern) pedal away the pounds!
“Happy Anniversary and Goodbye” (1974) ~ Norma and Fay (Nanette Fabray) keep fit for their husbands in Ball’s first post-series TV special. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a masseur.
SONG CYCLE
“Lucy and the Generation Gap” (1969) ~ Includes the song “Daisy Bell” aka “Bicycle Built for Two” written in 1892 by British songwriter Harry Dacre.
The song is heard again in “Lucy’s Lucky Day” (1971).
You’ll look sweet Upon the seat Of a bicycle built for two!
CALL ME MR. BIKE
“Tennessee Ernie Hangs On” (1954) ~ featured Richard Reeves as Ernie’s old pal Lester Bike, host of “Milliken’s Chicken Mash Hour”. “Lucy Saves Milton Berle” (1964) ~ featured Milton Frome as Jerry Bike, Berle’s agent. The agent’s name is never spoken aloud, but is listed in the end credits.
A Lucille Ball impersonator takes a carefree trike ride at Disney Studios. [photo by Lori Mundy].

Did Somebody Say "Chocolate"?
Hey everyone! This past week, I was in Argentina yet again! This time, my friends and I traveled south in Argentina to a town called Bariloche. Bariloche is located within the Nahuel Huapi National Park and is the gateway to Patagonia. It is the perfect destination for those who love the outdoors, as the multiple ski resorts allow you to ski throughout the Andes, and the abundant lakes are key spots for fishing and kayaking. Bariloche also has a lively downtown area with architecture modeled after Switzerland. As you can imagine, I was beyond excited to go from the moment that my friends and I booked our plane tickets!
On Tuesday in the afternoon, my friends and I took the bus from Montevideo to Colonia and then rode the ferry to Buenos Aires. Upon arriving, we changed our dollars for Argentine pesos ($1 USD = 480 pesos), loaded our Sube cards (passes that you scan to use the metro and buses in Argentina), and then went to an Asian restaurant called Koi. There, we feasted on Miso ramen and dumplings. I ordered an iced tea, something that I’ve missed since being away from South Carolina! It really is astounding the diversity that Buenos Aires has in terms of gastronomy; any type of craving you might have, Buenos Aires has a restaurant to satisfy it. Because our flight was late at night, we killed some more time in another bar/bookstore called Backroom Bar. After enjoying our Passionfruit Punch drinks and chatting, we headed to the airport via Uber. Our flight left at 1:00 a.m., and we arrived in Bariloche at 3:30 a.m. Because the town doesn’t have Uber, we booked taxis in advance to take us from the airport to our Airbnb. Our host was there to give us the keys and show us around the apartment, and then we headed straight to bed to catch up on sleep.
Later that morning, Will, Karen, and I bundled up (it was about 39 ℉ outside) and roamed around the centro of Bariloche (our Airbnb was a 7-minute walk from downtown). Bariloche is set right along the lake of Nahuel Huapi, so we of course had to take pictures in front of the “Bariloche” letters with the stunning backdrop behind it. We then went to a confitería (chocolate shop) called Rapa Nui to have breakfast. Bariloche is known as the Chocolate Capitol of Argentina, so at Rapa Nui, I ordered a chocolatada (hot chocolate). Karen, Will, and I also shared a waffle topped with chocolate, banana, raspberry, and strawberry ice cream. Needless to say, I was sugared-out after breakfast, but it was worth every bite. We then went to the Center of Tourist Information to ask about the bus system and must-visit sites in Bariloche. The bus lines in the city are on a tightly set schedule, and some buses only arrive every hour. We therefore had to plan our activities around the schedule so we didn’t waste time waiting for the bus. The upside is that one bus ride is 100 pesos, or 20 cents. We definitely were traveling on a budget!
After returning from the Information Center, our other friends, Joe and Cleo, joined us to take the bus to Cerro Campanario. There, we took the ski lift to arrive at a lookout point where you could see majestic views of Southern Bariloche. The mountains reminded me of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado where I used to live, except the Andes are encapsulated by lakes and islands. Bariloche’s climate is unique in that in the winter, temperatures can drop to -30℉, and in the summer, you can expect the temperature to climb to 75℉. As I was standing at the top looking out at the islands, I could only imagine what it would be like in December to lay out on the sand and take a dip in the crystal-clear lake. I also noticed that the mountains were pretty barren in terms of snow. A local told us that Bariloche gets the most snow in July and August, so that explained why the ski resorts were closed when we went. After taking the lift down and the bus back, we bought groceries in the supermarket and made lentil soup and peppers stuffed with rice, perfect for our cozy movie night that we had that evening.
On Thursday morning, Karen and I woke up early to scout the tourist agencies to see what excursions were available. We picked up a lot of brochures, compared prices, and explained our options to the others at breakfast. I had coffee and tostados at ChimiDeli, a restaurant that one of the tourist agents had recommended. All five of us then shared a chocolate mousse cake adorned with strawberries. Here arise my two tips when traveling: 1. If you don’t know where to eat, ask a local! They are guaranteed to have good recommendations, and it saves a lot of time instead of poking around on Google Maps and peering at reviews of restaurants. 2. If you want to try different types of cuisine, order multiple dishes and share with your friends! This way, you can have a bite of everything without feeling confined to ordering one meal.
After breakfast, we headed to the Chocolate Museum at Havanna and went on a tour! The guide explained to us that pure chocolate comes from the cacao bean, and in the early centuries, pure chocolate was exchanged by indigenous groups as a form of currency. It was also served as offerings to the gods, or high-ranking authorities in the communities. In Europe, people began to mix cacao with sugar and milk, transforming the cacao chocolate into the milk chocolate that we know today. After World War II, a large surge of Italians immigrated to Bariloche, including a man named Alfred Fenoglio. The so called “pioneer of chocolate in Bariloche” started the first chocolatería in Patagonia, and he is known to be the source of the boom of chocolaterías in Southern Argentina that generate millions of dollars in revenue annually. Who would’ve thought! As we strolled through the museum, we drank our samples of hot chocolate and saw life-sized animals pertaining to Bariloche that were carved entirely out of chocolate! Count how many times I wrote “chocolate” in this post 😉
The gang and I then went to Cerro Otto to take the gondola up to another lookout point. The view was once again spectacular, and we got our fair share of group selfies before heading down to catch the bus back to the center. When we were in line for the bus, there was a man that was playing the bandoneon, an instrument similar to the accordion that is found in most tango music (tango was born in Argentina and Uruguay). Playing the bandoneon is one of the main ways that Argentines connect to their roots and keep the culture alive, so I gave him a tip and enjoyed the tunes before boarding the bus. Once in the centro, we went to another chocolate shop called Mamuschka! Mamuschka is iconic for its rotating Russian dolls on the outside of the building and its wrapping paper being adorned with the colorful Russian doll logo. I couldn’t help myself and filled a box with different chocolate assortments, including ositos- little bears that are filled with dulce de leche. I also got chocolate bars for friends and family and immediately put them away when I got home so as not to be tempted to sneak a bite! After Mamuschka, my friends and I stopped in a supermarket to get ingredients to make sandwiches for our full-day excursion the next day. Then, we had dinner in a cervecería called Bachmann! I had passed by the restaurant earlier that day, and I made it a priority to dine there, as my last name is Bachmann! At the restaurant, we had burgers and beer from Patagonia, and the waitress gave me some coasters with the “Bachmann” logo on it. I kept cracking jokes that it was the family restaurant in Bariloche. We spent several hours there laughing and enjoying each other’s company before heading home to rest for another big adventure the next day.
Part II coming soon! Ciao!

Yellow House, Valerio Olgiati, 1999, Flims Switzerland.
This is a big one for the smalt boys – post 200 on the site. Foundational reference here, and one we have seen in person.
The last ski trip of the season, around number 10, and it was a slushy March afternoon in Laax. Hell of a day. Culminated in one of us breaking a pin binding clean off the ski, and the other being deemed the God of Snow. After a sweaty and revelrous gondola ride down the mountain, we had some time to kill before the bus brought us to Chur and the train took us back home to Basel. These ski days often involved 6hrs of transit time and 8hrs ski time but we were committed to shred. We came, we shred, and now it was time to take snacks from the shop and wander around Olgiati’s playpen of Flims.
We dropped our gear on the side of the road next to a restaurant where the Swiss were enjoying their apres-ski (unlocked – high trust in these places) and began to hunt for the goods. We were rewarded instantly. 100 meters down the road, in the center of the town (which is more of a layby on an alpine highway) sits this absolute unit of a building.
It stands in stark contrast to everything around it, yet somehow feels like it has been on this mountain since the rock was thrust upwards during the collision of the African and European tectonic plates, 20 million years ago. Those 15 black voids on the streetside façade silently judge everything that passes. It is solid and ominous and completely unique, yet for some reason there is a warmth and genuine soul to the thing. We showed up and realized that Olgiati’s grumpy exterior conceals a deep understanding and (maybe even) care for the people who live here and visit this place.
The building is a cultural center, converted from a home for the town Parish. Valerio’s father Rudolf, an architect himself, offered to donate his collection to the Parish foundation on the condition that it be renovated instead of demolished. Work began after his death and was completed in 2000. The interior is gutted, with a new wood finish over the whole space. The roof was replaced with a new structural shape and slate shingles. Some openings were left, others covered up, and all refinished with cast concrete frames. The entire exterior is painted and finished in a very fine lime wash, blending all the old textured pieces into one whole.
We had 10 minutes until closing so decided to speed-run the interior. We spent most of the time touching the window frames, admiring the weep holes, and whispering, “holy fuck”. There was a temporary exhibition on and the kid at the desk spoke perfect English. He told us he didn’t know anything about the building when we asked.
The inside is rock solid and completely cozy. You could run a boxing match on the top level and sleep on the wood floor on the ground level at the same time. The plan is dead simple and the same on all levels, but at the top you get the special angled column and pitched roof. The structure and enclosure are so locked down and well-executed they can be forgotten, and the architect can start to consider higher aims.
It’s hard to say exactly why this all works together. It weaves together mountain town culture, physical landscape, heritage buildings, religion, material mass, phenomenology, and one man’s brazen disregard for all that bullshit. I still don’t quite believe Olgiati’s non-referential thesis, but the fact that he genuinely tries it every time means that his buildings are the only stable and true reference points I have for pure architectural thought. He’s insane, but he’s useful and maybe a genius.
After we were ushered out of the building, we visited a few other bangers, hopped on the postbus, tried to eat a poke bowl using a popsicle stick and a rolled-up m&ms wrapper, and received a horrified look from a well-intentioned bus seat neighbor.
Happy 200, we still don’t know what good architecture is.

Day 13, Thursday June 8: Durango to Silverton to Ouray to Montrose via Hwy 550, then via 50 to Gunnison. 330 km
I'll be riding over the San Juan Mountains via the Million Dollar Highway today. At 6,522 ft, the road from Durango is a typical river valley, lush and green farms and ranches on the right and on the left, red hilltops, stained by the iron in the soil.
As I start the climb to Silverton (9,318', pop 651), the air gets typically cooler, the hills turn to mountains, and the scenery from lush to spectacular. Silverton was a booming silver mining area back in 1860 but is now mostly a cute and charming tourist town that lays claim to the world's highest Harley Davidson shop.
From Silverton, I pick up the section of Hwy 550 known as the Million Dollar Highway. Although the name could legitimately be attributed to the views, it actually stems from the cost. Originally constructed as a toll road by Otto Mears in 1883 to transport minerals, it was to rebuilt in the early 1920s at a purported cost of one million dollars per mile. Its twists, winds, climbs, and descents are both an engineering marvel and a dream to ride. To enable the snow plows to clear all the snow, much of the route has no guardrails, which partially explains why it has also been called America's most dangerous highway. It's also a long way down. Between Silverton and Ouray, I ride over the red mountain pass at 11,018'.
Ouray (7,792', pop 921) was once home to over 30 active mines. Today, its climate, natural alpine environment, and scenery have earned it the nickname "Switzerland of America".
My final leg of Hwy 550 takes me north to Montrose (5,807', pop 20,648), the county seat of Montrose County. Back down from the mountains, it's essentially lower, flatter, hotter, and dryer.
But not for long. As I head east on Hwy 50 towards Gunnison (7,703', pop 6,695) I climb up through the natural playgrounds for fishing, skiing, hiking, biking, motocross, boating and rock climbing, for which this area is known including the Gunnison River, Tomichi Creek and Blue Mesa Reservoir, Curecanti National Recreation Area, Tomichi State Wildlife Area, Sapinero State Wildlife Area, McIntosh State Wildlife Area, and Hartman Rocks.
It's been a short but taxing ride and a long day. Luckily, my hotel has a hot tub, so a long spell there, followed by a couple of local craft beers, I think I see an early bedtime in my future.

Secret Santa 2022
Dear @princephilipplahm I am pleased to present you with your Secret Santa present :) I hope you like the little Christmas peaks into the lives of all your favourites! I hoper you have a brilliant Christmas and a happy New Year with lots to celebrate!
Christmas Spotlights
24th of December 2022
The snow that had glistened on the Swiss alps last weekend had been replaced by mud and rain everywhere in Germany in just two days. Even the southern Bavarians were lacking snow in the valleys. Constantin looked out of his window and dreamed along with Bing Crosbys „White Christmas“ before turning around. Seeing the beautiful tree they had put up and decorated with various ornaments - some in his family for generation – cheered him up significantly, especially the carefully wrapped presents underneath it. This was the one day of the year he was definitely spending inside, he shouldn’t be worrying about the weather. Consti grabbed his phone from the small table beside the sofa and took a picture of the tree before opening the WhatsApp group chat and typing:
„Merry Christmas boys. Hope you get lots of presents. Eat as much as you want, I am ready to beat you in Oberstdorf!“
Karl must have sent a picture at the same time, because right after he had sent his, he saw Karls daughter Luisa next to a tree and a new ski set as well as a Playmobil train in her arms. The accompanying message read „The christkind made someone happy here!“ Consti grinned and replied with a heart eyes emoji. The little girl was just too cute.
„Consti, you said you would prepare desert, I am counting on you“, his mother shouted for him. „Yes, move your ass“, his girlfriend added. „On my way!“ he laughed and decided not to let the weather dampen his mood again.
------
In Willingen Stephan Leyhe sat on his couch alone. He had decided not to tag along with his family which was visiting his aunt. They’ll see each other tomorrow anyway, so he just enjoyed having the quiet house for himself, reading the last pages of his current book. He finished it quite quickly and eyed the wrapped presents carefully, he suspected new books in at least two packets. Stephan grabbed his phone and he saw four notifications in the teams group chat. He smiled at the tree pictures from Consti, Karl, Andi and Severin, before adding his own.
„Merry Christmas boys! Keeping it quiet here.“
After sending the text, he wandered around the living room and started setting the table for dinner, beginning to regret staying behind. He loved his family and winter was the part of the year he spent the least time with them, even his loud younger cousins. So when he heard the key in the lock he perked up and smiled at the commotion in the hallway, where everyone was getting rid of wet shoes and coats. Quiet was nice and well, but family was always better.
------
In Switzerland Simon Amman was quite busy. They always decorated their tree on the 24th so after his wife and his kids had given up and decided it was boring, he stuck around. Adding another bauble here or there, rearranging something he didn’t like before until he was fully satisfied with it. They had a beautiful tree. He sat down in an armchair and his thoughts wandered around the last year. The ups and downs of his jumping, his shoes, his studies. And once again he wondered how it would keep going. Trying to block the last weekend in Engelberg – of all places – out of his mind, he didn’t even let the thought of the Four Hills tournament rise up. This was Christmas, the time he spent with his family. The kids were super excited to get their presents later on and hoped their wish list did make it to Santa. He had told them he was really sure, and he was, because he had been the one to go shopping and get some of the stuff on it. The absence of the much anticipated real rocket will be a slight disappointment, but he was sure they could cope with that. Simon hadn’t noticed his oldest daughter coming into the room until she spoke:
“You did a good job daddy! I like the sparkles!” He smiled, stood up and picked her up from the ground.:
“I like them too. Are you ready for the presents later?” She nodded her head vigorously and he laughed. After placing her back on the ground he followed her into the dining room where he looked at his family. No matter what his jumping was doing, he had fun doing it and would do it as long as it would let him, and if not, his life was definitely not over.
------
Killian didn’t really care for the break in the world cup. Yes it was Christmas, that was wonderful and everything, he just wanted to keep going. He just started in the World Cup in Titisee-Neustadt and it wasn’t working as well as he hoped. He was buzzing to be better in Oberstdorf and the following places. But as much as he wished it could go on he couldn’t change it. So he took another strip of sticky tape and finished wrapping the earrings he bought for Veronika. He was always late with preparing everything and she had given him an ultimatum 25 minutes ago. Time for presents was in 30 minutes, and if he didn’t finish wrapping til then he would have to endure the whole evening filled with Ariana Grandes Christmas songs on repeat. He could cope with that but would prefer a wider mix, so he was pleased with himself as he stood up and gathered the four presents.
“I’m done!” he shouted happily as he entered the living room, where his wife sat in a chair, reading on her tablet.
“Well I just have to threaten you with Ariana and you’ll actually do something!” she grinned. Killian laughed: “Oh no, I made myself vulnerable!”
He placed his presents under the tree and sat down on the floor next to it.
“Can I have my presents now?” And while they exchanged gifts and enjoyed their evening with a movie, Killian decided the break was kind of okay.
------
Manuel had loved the perfect Christmases at his parents’ house, shared with girlfriend and her family as well. But this was their first Christmas as their own family, the three, well four – counting their dog – of them alone. And it hadn’t quite been the perfect day so far. Henrik had woken them up at an unholy hour, just to fall asleep to System of a Down before noon. He then vomited up her milk on the living room floor, thankfully next to the carpet, but they had to keep the dog away from it and well, it had all been a bit chaotic. Not quite the definition of perfect he had dreamt of. Manu and Sylvie sat down on the couch with a glass of Coke each. They decided not to have alcohol with the baby being so little, in case of emergencies. He was lying in a crib next to them, now totally at peace and dreaming away. Manuel thought about his last results and the upcoming four hills tournament and he couldn’t wait to get started there. He was on a high again and this year would be great, he just knew it. And sitting there, with the twinkling lights around him, his family next to him, everything did feel perfect in the end. He was totally ready for his next tasks in the world cup.
------
In another part of Europe, precisely Finland, Antti was practising a German tradition someone in Titisee told him about. Praising the Christmas tree. You just have to look at a decorated tree and tell the owner “what a beautiful tree”, and you get a shot of liquor. After explaining it to his family he had praised three trees already and he was starting to feel the Salmiakki. Normally he didn’t drink at all, so he decided that was enough for him. And now, slightly drunk he sat in his chair and thought about the family around him and how much he loved each and everyone of them. Always supporting him in his dreams, no matter what he was doing. And when that concerned ski jumping a second group of people came to mind. The fans. They were amazing, constantly pushing him and their support encouraged him all the time. They would never let him down. Antti smiled. He hoped that each and every one of them had a brilliant, maybe slightly tipsy Christmas. Especially the one reading this.
