ART | Venice Biennale highlights During the recently opened Venice Art Biennale under the title Foreigners Everywhere (until November 2024) there is a selection of ancestor of the Swiss branch of Art Brut - Aloïse Corbaz, which could be found in the main pavilion of Giardini.

If you are visiting the art expo, don't forget also to book a cinema tickets for upcoming screenigs in the beginning of may - in participation with Cinémathèque Française there will be a HQ restoured version of the biopic, directed by Liliane de Kermadec, 1975 , "Aloïse". Artist, who lived during both world wars and was put in a psychiatric hospital at her 30's, remaining there until her death; in later years, one of the hospital members discovered her drawings and began to engage in her exhibition activities. The story of the artist, who painted on cardboard and wrapping paper, embodying her dreams in the plot with a whole constellation of legendary film figures: André Téchiné wrote the script, and Isabelle Huppert together with Delphine Seyrig playing the main character in her different life periods.

International style in the 1920s was well known throughout Russia, Germany and the Netherlands and after world war 2 and through some very talented Swiss designers, the Swiss design movement emerged in the 1950s and would be the pioneer and major force behind graphic design.

With key principles and attention mainly poised towards detail, precision, craft skills, system of education and technical training, a high standard of printing as well as a clear refined and inventive lettering and typography laid out a foundation for a new movement.

Using asymmetrical organisation on a mathematically constructed grid and using text and or images the designer would be able create designs that were clear and factual manner free from political agenda. it would spread quickly through Europe and the united states.

Helvetica New York Subway typeface.

Helvetica (Latin for Swiss) was introduced amidst the popularity of swiss design. Developed in 1957 by Max Miedinger and Edward Hoffman in Switzerland gathering attention from advertising agencies Helvetica quickly appeared in corporate logos, signage , fine art, prints and in 1984 Apples Macintosh.

Josef Muller-Brockman -

Josef Muller-Brockman is one of the most influential graphic designers in its history, aka the Swiss Godfather.

Muller-Brockman was born in Switzerland in 1914. He studied graphic design and architecture at the Zurich school of art and crafts. By 1939 he opened his graphic design and illustration studio and would go on to to join the Swiss Werkbund (Swiss Association of Artists and Designers).

Different art and design movements such as Constructivism, De Stijl, Suprematism and the Bauhaus would influence Josef in the development of "Swiss international style" and result in him being the most well-known swiss designer and his name being the most recognised when talking about this time period.

After 1945, Josef would concentrate on illustration and exhibition work leading to his first poster for the Tonhalle in Zurich, 1950. It was at this time he would develop his constructivism approach and graphic design would start to occupy all his time. Work for the swiss Automobile Club (protect the child) and numerous posters for Tonhalle in Zurich would bring him fame and recognition for his work.

From 1957 to 1967 Josef would go on to create work that would be used by most graphic today and for as long as we use graphic design. Becoming a professor at the Kunstgewerbeschule, working alongside other influential graphic designers and working as a consultant for IBM as well as his communication agency Muller-Brockman and co are just some of the things that can be discussed when talking about Josef. His work would go on to be rewarded with numerous prizes and inspire would be graphic designers like myself 83 years after starting his first adventure.

"I became a graphic designer by accident," could potentially sum up my graphic design journey so far which is why I enjoyed writing about Josef.

Hans Neuburg -

Hans Neuburg was a disciple of the swiss style movement. Hans trained at the Orell Fussli Art Institute in Zurich and went on to become a copywriter and designer in advertising agency Basel and Zurich in 1928. He went on to specialise in advertising and exhibition design in his own studio in Zurich. Hans went on to have an amazing career working on the 1939 Swiss National expo in Zurich and also the Swiss contribution to the Prague World Fair in 1945 and the Brussels Expo in 1958.

I have enjoyed looking through Hans portfolio of work and pictures from the Brussels expo remind me of vintage science fiction movie scenes which caught my attention. Hans incredible work for the Red cross poster grabs your attention and his 1957 "Radiotelefono" poster reminds me of a Alfred Hitchcock style movie poster.

Hans went on to become the director of the Kunstgewerbemuseum and while finding the time to do some teaching along the way I don't imagine understanding how big an impact he would have on graphic designers for years to come.

Top Five Harley-Davidson Sportsters, Part One: Ironheads

Harley-Davidson has just rebooted one of the world’s longest-running model lines, with the launch of the new Sportster S. But remarkably, it’s only the third major engine update in the Sportster’s 60-plus years on this earth.

Before the new Revolution Max-powered Sportster S came, we had the Evolution motor that debuted in 1986. And before that, the iconic Ironhead. But throughout each era, the Sportster has always been a mainstay of the custom scene.

To celebrate, we’ve rounded up our ten favorite Sportster builds, divided by their motors. This week, we’re featuring five top-shelf Ironheads from some of the world’s best custom builders—including illustrious names like Max Hazan [above] and Hideya Togashi [below].

Next week, it’s the Evo’s turn.

Hide Motorcycle There’s a long history of Japan’s love for Americana, and the humble Sportster is no exception. Case in point: this Ironhead Sportster by Hideya Togashi of Hide Motorcycle (that’s ‘Hee-day’). It was one of the stars of 2018’s Mooneyes show—a show that Togashi-san is a regular fixture at.

The bike’s built around an original but refurbished 1966 XLCH motor, complete with a Linkert DC-7 carb. But the rest of it is mostly is custom, and it was built without any specific style or theme in mind. “As always, I cherish the balance, and maximize the beauty,” says Hideya.

The motor sits in a scratch-built nickel-plated hardtail frame, with the OEM frame number plate grafted on. Hideya kept the original steering head, triples and forks, but added custom sleeves. The Harley rolls on 21F/18R wheels with drum brakes.

Hideya fabricated the aluminum headlight nacelle and fuel tank, and built the oil tank. The rear fender’s been scalped from a vintage Harley FX Super Glide, then modified to suit. Swept back bars and a pair of beautifully-bent nickel-plated exhausts add to the vintage vibe.

The paint’s extra classy too—a 1930s Harley scheme laid down by Skop Paint Works. Hide’s Ironhead blends vintage speedway and flat track styles together to create a minimalistic and impossibly cool machine. The perfect use of an Ironhead motor. [More]

Hot Chop Speed Shop Here’s another bike that stopped visitors to the 2018 Mooneyes event dead in their tracks: a twin-engined Harley drag bike by Kentaro Nakano at Hot Chop Speed Shop in Kyoto. Using two Sportster XLCH engines, Nakano-san built the monster as a tribute to the drag racers of the 70s.

Unsurprisingly, it picked up two awards at the show—from the top Japanese mags, Hot Bike and Vibes.

‘Double Trouble’ uses a 1969 Ironhead in front, with an older engine at the rear. Both run with S&S Super B carbs, fitted with custom velocity stacks. Kentaro’s friend Kazuhiro Takahashi of Sakai Boring helped rebuild the engines.

The two V-twins are linked by connecting plates, and their output shafts are connected to two separate primaries. The transmission’s a four-speed from a 1980s Big Twin and Kentaro has set the timing of the two motors so that they go ‘potato potato’ at idle, but scream at high revs.

The whole arrangement is housed in a custom hardtail frame, fabricated from steel tubing. There’s a set of early 70s Ducati Imola forks up front, with 18” rims at both ends wrapped in M&H drag slicks. Kentaro installed a pair of Airheart brakes up front, with a Wilwood brake out back.

All of the bodywork was fabricated in aluminum, from scratch. Fuel sits in the cylindrical reservoir up front, with oil held in the seat ‘cowl.’ Custom upholstery from Atelier Cherry adds to the period-correct look.

Double Trouble’s finished off with a narrow set of custom drag bars, with a 1970s H-D tacho out front. The bodywork’s been left raw, with tidy Hot Chop Speed Shop decals on the tank. Buttoned up, it’s both elegant and monstrous. [More]

Hazan Motorworks Max Hazan’s work speaks for itself, but what’s remarkable is that the American builder’s had an unmistakable signature from day one. If you don’t believe us, then consider the fact that this Sportster-powered artwork was only his fourth build.

“I start with a motor that I find aesthetically pleasing, put it on the table, and build the bike around it,” Max told us back then. In this case, the motor is exquisite. Max built it up with two 1981 Ironhead front heads, split the rocker covers and added matching Amal carbs.

The frame was built from 7/8” and 1” steel tubes, and also holds the oil and wiring. The front-end’s a work of art on its own; it uses two springs under the fuel tank, and a damper behind the headlight. The only rear suspension is a pair of springs under the seat, with about 1.5” of travel.

Max had a set of 1920s car tires in his hands, so he built the bike up with a 30” wheel out front, and a 31” hoop at the back. They suit the scale of the bike too—which measures eight feet long, but weighs just 300 lbs.

Almost everything was fashioned by hand, using metal that was lying around the workshop, or, in some cases, small salvaged parts. There’s a frosted shot glass as a taillight cover, and a porcelain doorknob on the hand shifter. The handmade tank only holds 1.5 gallons… but Max is under no illusions about his creation having to be ridden far.

Eight years on, this Ironhead still stands as one of our favorite Harleys—nay, customs—and some of Max’s best work. [More]

HardNine Choppers The 1979 Harley-Davidson XLCR is arguably too rare to be customized these days, but the owner of this Sporty has three. So he had no qualms about handing one over to Swiss builder Danny Schneider for a makeover.

Danny, who operates as HardNine Choppers, is an ex-motocrosser who had previously built two Triumph flat trackers, and was itching to give a Harley the same treatment. So he took on the project with the provision that he could turn it into a tracker. Luckily, the client agreed.

Danny’s work went deep—starting with the motor that he bored out from 997 cc to 1,340 cc, with KB Performance pistons. The carb is from the Harley performance specialists, S&S Cycle, and the exhaust is a custom nickel-plated system that exits under the seat. Danny had to relocate the oil tank to accommodate it.

The custom fuel tank echoes the lines of the original XLCR unit, but it’s actually a slimmer, split design (the left side houses the oil). Danny hand-shaped an aluminum tail section too, with slits to help dissipate heat. He made the seat pad himself, too.

Suspension is by way of Showa shocks from an FXR, fitted with Öhlins cartridges, and Bitubo rear shocks. It rolls on 21F/16R spoked wheels, with a Beringer brake set that Danny drove to the French company’s HQ to have made.

This XLCR is a clever mix of classic style and modern parts, tied together with a host of custom touches and a fresh paint job inspired by a mini-bike spotted on the street (true story).

It’s also a great story of perseverance; Danny took a two-year break in the middle of the project to welcome his daughter into the world and battle testicular cancer. Then he crammed two month’s worth of 15-hour days in to finish it in time for the MBE Expo show in Verona, Italy. Much respect. [More]

DP Customs We’ve featured a slew of slammed and hot-rodded Harleys from the now-defunct DP Customs over the years, but this was one of their wildest. Brothers Jarrod and Justin Del Prado built it as a personal project between client jobs, using Justin’s own 1000 cc 1979 Ironhead Sportster as a donor.

DP Customs went all-out, starting with a turbo that had been sitting in the shop waiting for the right project.

The motor was rebuilt with forged pistons and new valves and springs, then the turbo was installed with a custom draw-through setup, and a Mikuni carb. From the custom aluminum intake and exhaust, to the custom oil system that runs into a Mooneyes tank, it’s an impressive setup.

Like three of the other Harleys on this list, this one features a scratch-built hardtail frame. It uses DP Customs’ signature 6” stretch and 4” drop, with a custom 19” wheel up front, and a modified 15” car wheel at the back. The front brake’s a Brembo, and the rear is a custom system with a combination sprocket and rotor.

Up top is a wafer-thin seat, with a traditional peanut tank up front. DP Customs installed clip-ons with Biltwell Inc. grips, and head- and taillights—but there’s no speedo, and no turn signals. The asymmetrical paint job, red frame and gold wheels should clash, but somehow they harmonize, maximizing the Harley’s eye candy appeal.

DP Customs admit the bike wasn’t built with practicality in mind, summing up that “it hauls ass in a straight line, and the brakes work.” [More]

Una nueva generación de artistas merodea por un conceptualismo descreído, haciendo equilibrismo entre el humor y la crítica. Desde la herencia revisada del dadaísmo, el punk, el arte conceptual, el frikismo pseudocientífico y las muy diversas manifestaciones del underground, el arte merodea por un conceptualismo descreído, haciendo equilibrismo entre el sentido del humor y la incidencia de raíz micropolítica. Muchos tildan a esta deriva de “conceptual lúdico” siguiendo la apertura que supone el trabajo de artistas como Robert Barry, Yoko Ono, Jiri Kovanda, Fischli & Weiss, Martin Creed, Tino Sehgal, Roman Ondák, Miranda July o Bobby Baker, que en unos días llega a La Casa Encendida. En los sesenta, Guy Debord también contribuyó lo suyo con el Manifiesto situacionista incitando a los artistas a salir a la calle y disparar al azar. O lo que es lo mismo: a reivindicar la radicalidad y la intensidad como fundamentos de la creación. Un propósito que sigue vigente en el arte contemporáneo: el uso de la autocrítica y el privilegio de la distracción como formas para pensar en los extremos y discutir sobre los matices. Hablamos de una actitud a medio camino entre la exaltación y la cabezonería que, desde cierta poética de lo insignificante y lo precario, experimenta con lo micro para intentar abarcar lo macro. Quotidiano sostenibile

Com podria ser la vida quotidiana en una societat sostenible? Com et cuides a tu mateix i als altres, treballar, estudiar, moure’t, cultivar una xarxa de relacions personals i socials, establir una relació sense distorsions amb l’entorn? Quins són els trets comuns a les diverses societats sostenibles que podem imaginar avui? I quin és l’abast de les decisions que es podrien fer sobre la base d’aquests elements comuns?

Diari sostenible presenta un estat de l’art sobre les respostes que es poden donar avui a aquestes preguntes. I, a partir d’aquí, esbossen possibles escenaris i alternatives factibles, referint-se al camp d’aplicació ampli però no global de la dimensió quotidiana de l’existència (el món vist pels que hi viuen), amb especial referència al medi urbà ( tant ciutats històriques com noves conurbacions en curs). Per tant, tracta del futur de la vida, però ho fa indicant una perspectiva molt diferent de la que molts exemples de "cases del futur" ens han acostumat a imaginar. De fet, el focus no es centra en tecnologies que haurien de redefinir les funcions tradicionals, sinó més aviat en diferents "estratègies de vida" que estan sorgint avui en dia, fent-se possible i, almenys per a alguns, desitjable...

Lo inútil, lo improductivo y la pérdida de tiempo se convertirán en los ejes vertebradores de esta propuesta que guarda en ellos un sentimiento de alegría y satisfacción.

Enmarcado en la exposición El hecho alegre. Una mecánica popular de los sentidos (11.10.19-05.01.20), se presenta este taller que incide en la idea de la inutilidad como forma de resistencia y de la atemporalidad como lugar de aprendizaje. En la era del conocimiento útil (másteres habilitantes, estudios profesionales, etc.), el estudio de asuntos inservibles tiene algo de liberador.

Este taller es absolutamente improductivo y en él trataremos temas fascinantes: enciclopedias imaginarias, las últimas palabras que alguien realmente no dijo, las normas del buen comer, la Divina Comedia, el cultivo de plantas aromáticas, historias que, pudiendo ser verdaderas, son falsas, las tentaciones diabólicas o el correcto uso de la cubertería y la cristalería en la mesa….

Ich muss diesen Dialog beginnen und Sie fragen, ob dieser Olympia Amateur Las Vegas 2019 Ihr erster internationaler Ausflug ware, oder?

„Wenn es so ist, ware es meine erste Prasentation au?erhalb meines Kolumbiens.

 Und Gott wird es mit Stil tun, indem er zu Mr. Olympia Amateur Vegas geht, und gema? den Ergebnissen, die dort auftreten, werde ich entscheiden, ob ich an anderen Veranstaltungen teilnehmen werde, die die Profikarte geben, und wenn es passiert, dass ich sie nicht bekomme In diesem Jahr 2019 werde ich mich fur den Mr. Olympia Amateur Medell anmeldenín Sudamerika 2020, da der Titelgewinn in Las Vegas mir den Schritt in die professionelle Liga ermoglichen wurde und es nicht notwendig ware, weiterhin auf der Amateurstrecke anzutreten. ”

Dieser Neogranadino hat es sehr klar und prazise, ??und als guter Kampfer startet er mit einem Ereignis von Transzendenz und Bedeutung von gro?em Ausma? wie dem von Joe Weider in die internationale Arena´s Olympia und vor allem das herausragendste, was er in der gleichen Wiege des Bodybuildings in den USA und im Hauptquartier der Olympia, dh in Las Vegas, macht.

"Ich freue mich auf den Tag von Olympia in Las Vegas. Es ist sehr motivierend fur mich zu wissen, dass ich auf eine Plattform au?erhalb meines Landes komme. Ich mag Herausforderungen. Ich liebe es, aus dieser sogenannten Komfortzone herauszukommen. und um zu wissen, wie gut es mir geht, ist es Zeit, sie mit den Gro?en von au?en zu bekampfen. ”

Benotigt Alejandro Guerra als eigener Richter seinen Korperbau, um ein Profi zu werden?

"Kommen Sie einfach in sehr gutem Zustand an."

 Was waren die Ambitionen dieses Alejandro Guerra, der seine ersten Schritte im Bodybuilding unternahm, und was sind die von Alejandro derzeit?

„Fruher habe ich nur leidenschaftlich trainiert und nicht an Wettkampfen teilgenommen, und ich bin nur angetreten, weil meine Freunde mich uberzeugt haben. Nach und nach wurde mir klar, dass ich geboren wurde, um ein Champion zu sein.

Momentan mochte ich in diesem Sport Geschichte fur Kolumbien schreiben. Ich durste nach Erfolg. Die Leidenschaft und Liebe, die ich fur Bodybuilding habe, geht mir durch die Adern. ”

 Auf welche Faktoren fuhren Sie die Tatsache des Wachstums des Bodybuildings in Ihrem Land zuruck?

"Dank sozialer Netzwerke und der besten Vertreter der Fitness haben sie es gewagt, ihre Korperarbeit mehr zu zeigen, sodass die neuen Generationen in Zukunft die gleiche Wirkung erzielen mochten."

Sagen Sie uns, warum haben Sie in diesem Sport angefangen und wann haben Sie die notige Liebe genommen, um zu definieren, dass dies Ihre Lebensweise und Ihr Beruf war?

„Ich habe mit diesem Sport angefangen, weil meine Freunde von Turnhallenbesitzern mir vorgeschlagen haben, sie zu vertreten, und deshalb habe ich kostenlos trainiert. Wie war dieser Prozess seit diesem ersten Wettbewerb bis heute? Ich meine einen Teil Ihres Korpers, der sich in Ihnen entwickelt hat.

"Der Fokus, die Disziplin, die Ausdauer und die Ausdauer und all dies zusammen haben zu einer guten Muskelentwicklung gefuhrt."

Was sagen dir die Leute auf der Stra?e, im Fitnessstudio, deiner Familie und deinen Freunden wegen deines Korpers?

"Ich personlich denke, dass es die beste Fitnessmesse in Sudamerika ist und in Medell bleiben sollteín als Hauptort, da es sehr gut aufgenommen wurde."

Was wurden Sie in Ihrem Leben als Athlet andern und wiederholen, um die begehrte Pro-Karte zu erhalten?

"Ich bin mir sicher, dass das einzige, was ich starken wurde, Engagement ware, das hei?t, wenn ich mich mehr in diesem Sport engagiere, gewinne ich mehr Engagement und Ernsthaftigkeit, weil ich es wirklich nicht so genommen habe, wie ich sollte."

Wer ist Ihrer Meinung nach der bisher beste Bodybuilder in Kolumbien und auf der ganzen Welt?

„Fur mich ist Marco Cardona IFBB PRO der beste Bodybuilder in Kolumbien, da wir Hierarchien respektieren mussen. Er war der erste kolumbianische Bodybuilder, der seine Profikarte erhielt, auch wegen seiner unbedenklichen Muskelqualitat. Aus diesem Grund wird er immer meinen Respekt haben .

Und von der Welt oder von euch allen ist der 8-fache Champion Ronnie Coleman, so einfach. ”

Definiere fur mich, was Bodybuilding ist. ”

"Es ist ein Lebensstil, der Sie auf verschiedene Bereiche und Situationen vorbereitet, da diejenigen, die in der Lage sind, Bodybuilder zu sein, die Anstrengung, Disziplin und Ausdauer haben, um Erfolg in dem zu erzielen, was sie sich vorgenommen haben."

 ARBEITSGORILLA-MODUS….

„Mein Trainingsort schlechthin ist das Capital Fit Gym in der Calle 43 # 79a 25 in Medellín, Antioquia.

Wenn ich in meine magische Trainingswelt eintrete, werde ich mit Hip Hop, Rap, Reggaeton musikalisch ermutigt und manchmal, wenn ich Cardio mache, hore ich Salsa. ”

Welche Diat und Nahrungserganzung machen Sie im Wettbewerb?

„Ich befolge eine Kaloriendefizit-Diat mit Tagen des Be- und Entladens. Er verwendete essentielle Aminosauren, BCAAs, hydrolysiertes Protein, Glutamin, Vitamine und Mineralien als grundlegende Basis. ”

Wie trainierst du von Montag bis Sonntag? Das hei?t, wie ist Ihre Muskelteilung.

„Ich arbeite nur einen Muskel pro Tag und das hat mir die meisten Ergebnisse gebracht.

Wochentlich nehme ich diese Trainingssequenz:

?     Montag - Bein

?     Dienstag - Brust

?     Mittwoch - Schultern

?     Donnerstag - Waffen

?     Freitag - zuruck

?     Samstag - Bein

?     Sonntagsschulter. ”

„Es ist sehr wichtig, bei der Ausfuhrung Ihrer Bewegungen eine hohe Konzentration zu erreichen, genau wie wir verstehen, dass der Korper perfekt auf Gehirnimpulse reagiert. Wenn Sie sich also darauf konzentrieren, einen Befehl vom Gehirn an Ihre Muskeln zu senden, sind diese nicht nur empfanglicher fur die Kontraktionen, die wir wahrend des Trainings erzeugen, sondern auch, wenn Sie glauben, dass Ihr Korper positiv auf diese Verbindung reagiert. Ich glaube es wirklich… und so habe ich das Gefuhl, gro?e Fortschritte gemacht zu haben. ”

Geben Sie uns Ihre ermutigenden Worte fur Ihre Fans und Leser.

„Bodybuilding ist eine der Sportarten, die mehr Kampf, Disziplin und Konzentration erfordert, und obwohl wir sagen konnen, dass es eine Sportart mit viel Geld ist und viele Menschen dies als Einschrankung ansehen. Ich konnte unterschreiben, dass Geld niemals ein Hindernis sein wird, wenn Sie diese bereits genannten Eigenschaften erfullen, denn jede harte Arbeit wird sich endlich auszahlen.

Ich sage dir mit aller Kraft und Aufrichtigkeit: Gib niemals auf! ”
