Decolonizing as Self Care
There is no shortage of folks out there talking about the importance of self care. And on the surface, I agree. But it’s also coming to light how some of those folks are also capitalizing on a “self care market” to profit off of something that shouldn’t really be about profit. Caring for community members and taking care of one’s self really shouldn’t come at an expense. What’s more: these so-called self care strategies are usually just band-aids that help us to cope under extreme stress while not addressing the root of the problem. Don’t get me wrong; coping is important! But if we aren’t acknowledging the source of stress and anxiety, no amount of self care strategies are going to help alleviate the weight.
The stress and anxiety that most of us feel today is caused by many issues, all of which are unique to each situation. The root of those issues, though, almost always leads back to colonial-based capitalism and there are very few people that seem to be acknowledging this root. White supremacy, sexism, poverty, climate destruction: all of these are rooted in colonial culture. No amount of yoga or meditation or ice cream or new shoes will change that. In fact, many of our “coping” strategies fuel a capitalist economy which in turn fuels our stress. Vacations away from work and shopping therapy drain bank accounts. And sometimes it feels like the only time that adults connect together is to drink.
Instead of self care being rooted in this capitalist economy, we should be turning to decolonial methods of care; connecting and supporting community, learning to grow and share food, connecting with the earth, dismantling power structures. Once we can identify that the problems we face are colonial in nature, it only makes sense that we should seek to decolonize and unsettle our lives as a response.

This cute guy appeared out of nowhere. I was alone on the pier. What a blessing this 'close up & personal'encounter was! ~ Pelicans represent buoyancy and resilience. They have the ability to bounce back, even when the odds are against them. When a pelican appears, it is a timely reminder that you have the ability to rise above and recover from any challenging situation, by drawing on your inner resources. 💎 #Pelican #magesticbird #freedom #bythesea #healingenergy #swimmingupstream #messagefromnature

We may be sleeping through life floating downstream allowing things to happen to us or we may be designing our life creating the space to become like the mermaid in this picture or we may be desperately trying to swim upstream or holding on to the shore resisting change. I feel like I'm swimming against the flow of a river And I don't know where it starts or where I'll be delivered, Still I keep on swimming, I can't be a quitter, Even if I tried, I don't think I remember how to give up. #poetry #poem #poet #poems #poetrycommunity #poetryisnotdead #poetrylovers #poetsofinstagram #poema #nevergiveup #neverquit #keepgoing #dontgiveup #swimmingupstream #keepon #chaseyourdreams #chasingdreams #determination #keepfighting #poetryislife #poetrysociety #poetryofig #poetryporn #poetrycorner #poetryaccount #poetrygram #poemoftheday #poemsociety

Holding Grief
I went away for an overnight canoe trip with just one of my dogs. It was blissful. My brain was calm and comfortable and peaceful. I noticed the lack of clutter and noise as I paddled. It was a wonderful reset.
I came home to news about Afghanistan, following Lebanon, Haiti, Cuba… and the clutter and noise has quickly returned. I commented to a friend online that I’m exhausted from holding the anger and worry and guilt. But I’m also fearful that if I don’t hold those feelings that I’ll forget about them because these disasters aren’t in my face like they are for others and I need to remember that they’re real and they’re happening right now.
I know individual responsibility isn’t going to get me anywhere. I know that we need to collectively shift our culture away from colonial consumption. But placing blame on those 100 companies responsible for climate emissions isn’t going to shift us away from colonial consumption. And governments and rule makers obviously aren’t interested in that shift either; it holds those in power in their positions. This argument of who is responsible, individuals or governments, is an endless loop and people are dying now.
So for now I will hold my grief in my mind to remember that people are dying around the world and the world is burning, even if it’s not in my backyard. And I will hold my guilt in my heart to remind myself how much privilege I have to exist in a place without war or famine or climate disasters. And I will hold my anger in my whole body to ensure that I don’t become complacent when opportunities to help arise. And I will strive to also hold joy in addition to these so that I can find reasons to build a better world for the next generations.

Ima just gonna leave this here for the haters who think homeschooled kids are missing out 🙄 Yes this is controversial. I'm sure you believe there's absolutely NO drugs and NO bullying at your own school. But this is a truth bomb. And if you don't like it imagine how homeschoolers feel when you tell us that our kids won't be "socialized". FORCED ASSOCIATION IS NOT SOCIALIZATION . . . #lifeoutofthefastlane #lootfl #unschoolersofinstagram #slowliving_love #slowliving #forcedassociationisnotsocialization #socializedyaright #unschoolers #unschooled #ourunschooledlife #ourchoice #respectourchoice #swimmingupstream #againstthegrain #daretobedifferent #daretobelieve

A day of firsts. Kayaked in the Crystal River here in Glen Arbor where thousands of HUGE salmon are swimming upstream to spawn. I thought they were going to flip the kayak. Then over to the Dunes golf club for my first official game of golf! #firsts #kayaking #golfing #salmon #swimmingupstream #puremichigan (at Dunes Golf Club)

Swimming Upstream
There are more than 300 streaming TV services available now, but Netflix has managed to emerge head and shoulders above all the rest. With 104 million subscribers, it leaves in its wake a highly fragmented array of service providers and demographics. Even Amazon cannot claim a solid second-best rating because its 100 million Prime users get video services for free as an add-on to people who might not otherwise subscribe just for that component.
And yet even more companies are lining up to launch new streaming services, like AT&T’s Watch TV next week. The competition is going to keep increasing in the short term.
Tumblr media
AT&T’s latest venture is a result of its recent acquisition of Time Warner, and will provide content owned and distributed by its Turner subsidiary. Access will be free to all AT&T users with unlimited data plans, and $15/month for everyone else. Regardless, though, it will have commercials as its revenue model.
At a time when the typical US household only has three or four streaming subscriptions, it seems odd that so many more companies would still be clamoring to join the fray. While it could be argued that there are more than 126 million households in the US, and therefore fragmentation can still be profitable for many, it seems that we must be reaching the upper limit. After all, as we have learned with cable and satellite packages that offer hundreds of channels, you can still only watch one at a time.
AT&T, though, thinks it is different, that it is the new elephant in the living room. With a corporate portfolio that now includes phones, DirecTV, and Time Warner, it would be easy to think this way. Each is a powerhouse in its own right, and together, the new conglomerate represents a formidable power. Whether AT&T can leverage that clout into a respectable and profitable venture remains to be seen.
Furthermore, given the emphasis on original content (known as over-the-top programming in the industry), AT&T will need to up its game significantly if it wants to be a player. Merely replaying old content will only keep viewers a short while before the calls of Ozark Season 2, Stranger Things Season 3, and others are heeded.
Still, if you step back from the individual trees, the whole forest represents a tidal shift in how viewers consume video. It’s all on our terms now, more than ever before. VCRs may have been the first method of time-shifting, but DVRs and now on-demand programming mean we can do what we want, as well as whenever and wherever.
The big network broadcasters are feeling it right now, but I am betting it won’t be long before Netflix, et al., start dropping dozens of new movies that never ever had even a day’s worth of showings in theatres. Collectively, Netflix and its 300 contemporaries have disrupted how content is created, distributed, and consumed.
Since I am an AT&T unlimited user, I will indeed check out the new Watch TV, but like everyone else, I will need to be blown away by content (and hopefully not too many ads). If it’s not up to what I have come to expect from Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, I can see myself quickly forgetting it even exists.
Along with nearly 300 other ones as well. So many options, so little time. Some things never change.
